Bill to Incentivize Development of TV Content for Local Consumption Gains Unanimous Approval in PR House

Loíza Territorial Plan Is First in Town’s History

Bill to incentivize development of TV content for local consumption gains unanimous approval in PR House

The island House of Representatives has unanimously approved (46-0) a measure introduced by Speaker Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez that promotes the development of the local film industry, particularly series, reality shows, game shows, comedy programs and programs aimed at children, thus eliminating the requirement that they have to be scheduled or distributed outside the island to receive any economic incentive from the government.

“It has been recognized that the way to attract, increase, and maintain television production in a location is to provide incentives that help recoup the high costs of these productions and encourage greater investment in the local economy,” states the preamble of the measure, which was approved last week. “However, the current Puerto Rico Incentives Code requires that, in order to consider episodic series, television programs, and other television projects as film projects, they must be intended for commercial distribution or exhibition to the general public outside of Puerto Rico, thus limiting projects whose distribution is restricted to the Puerto Rican market.”

House Bill 443 amends Section 2091.01 of Act 60-2019, known as the “Puerto Rico Incentives Code,” to eliminate the requirement of advertising, distribution or commercial exhibition to the general public outside of Puerto Rico for film projects comprising episodic series, miniseries, and

television programs of a similar nature, including pilots and those produced for digital distribution, and for television projects, including but not limited to reality television programs, known in English as “reality shows,” interview programs, news programs, game shows, entertainment programs, comedy programs, variety programs, and children’s programs.

“The production of local television content is a critical component of Puerto Rico’s film industry because it generates long-term jobs that benefit qualified residents of the island and creates a permanent infrastructure that uses indirect local resources from a variety of industries, including but not limited to transportation, equipment and location rental, food, hotels, among others,” Méndez said.

“Today, it is a reality in the global market that multinational companies are investing in Puerto Rico to create more profitable and far-reaching mechanisms,” he added. “This Legislative Assembly’s commitment has been, and will continue to be, to promote the production of local television programming.”

Switch to free parking for some hospital visitors is subject of Senate hearing

Amid a legal dispute between the Medical Services Administration (ASEM) and the company managing the multi-story parking garage at the Puerto Rico Medical Center in Río Piedras, which holds a 40-year contract expiring in two years, questions have arisen about whether the company accurately reports the service’s revenue.

ASEM’s executive director, Regino Colón Alsina, stated that the issue came to light after both parties went to court over the construction of a multi-story parking garage for employees of the Medical Center, commonly known as Centro Médico.

The company, Medical Center Parking Associates LTD, argued that according to the contract, it was obligated to participate in the project; however, ASEM maintained that, since it is not for commercial purposes, the administration would not be affected.

The statements were made during a public hearing of the Committee on Transportation, Telecommunications, Public Services, and Consumer Affairs, chaired by Sen. Héctor Joaquín Sánchez Álvarez, regarding Senate Bill (SB) 1076,

which seeks to introduce a reduced rate for companions of patients hospitalized for more than a week.

“Among the issues in the litigation is whether we are being informed of the true financial implications of the bill,” Colón Alsina said. “If we manage the parking facilities in the future, which is very likely based on our experience, and if we can achieve a free parking rate based on this bill, we will do so.”

Colón Alsina indicated that his intention is for ASEM to resume managing the parking lot when the contract with the company expires in 2028, instead of seeking another lessor through a bid.

ASEM supports the measure, he said, but sees implementation as difficult.

Although SB 1076 proposes providing relief to patients’ companions, several senators questioned whether its implementation would encourage hospitals to raise regular rates, whether visitors would have to identify themselves as companions to receive the benefit, or whether it would represent an onerous burden for a hospital sector already facing financial difficulties.

Rivera Schatz urges chief of staff, treasury chief to deliver requested documents

Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz said Monday that he is prepared to go “to the fullest extent” to obtain the information requested by the Committee of the Whole from the La Fortaleza Chief of Staff Francisco Domenech Fernández and Treasury Secretary Ángel Pantoja Rodríguez.

Domenech had until midnight Monday to provide data from the Lobbyist Registry and information on government contracts, while the Treasury Department has until today to provide tax information on government contractor Antonio Sagardía de Jesús.

In response to questions from the press, Rivera Schatz stated, “They can say whatever they want, they can do whatever they want, and we respect that, but there is nothing better than a clear conscience and having the moral authority to demand it.”

“There is nothing better than that, and they know it: that we are going to insist, so I am in no hurry,” the Senate president added. “They can run, run, run, and run, but they won’t be able to escape.”

Rivera Schatz also indicated that the Treasury Department, through the Department of Justice, could appeal the ruling ordering the release of Sagardía’s information. Last Friday, the San Juan Court of First Instance ordered Pantoja Rodríguez to hand over Sagardía’s tax information within 48 hours, and Judge Iris L. Cancio González warned

that noncompliance could result in civil contempt of court.

“I imagine they will appeal,” Rivera Schatz said. “I have no problem prevailing again in the Appeals Court because the legal arguments they are presenting are

unfounded.”

He also said that the treasury secretary, whom he described as “a good person” and “his friend,” believes “fairness must be done for the taxpayer.”

“Defending the taxpayer also means that when someone tries to take advantage of the system with their taxes [...] the taxpayer needs to understand that there are no privileges for anyone, not for Antonio Sagardía, not for Verónica Ferraiuoli, not for me, not for anyone,” Rivera Schatz said. “That’s what it means to do justice for the taxpayer.”

The Senate president also did not rule out requesting additional information, issuing new summonses, and submitting referrals once he receives the documents requested from Domenech, given the “voluminous” nature of the information.

“He asked for until the 15th, and we gave him until the 20th, so I estimate that they will deliver it during the day,” he said, adding that once he receives the documents, he will make them public -- “all the documents.”

“I am going to ask the secretariat to digitize them or somehow put them on the website, so that anyone who wants to review them can do so,” Rivera Schatz said.

ACLU goes to court for information on Operation Stonegarden

The American Civil Liberties Union of Puerto Rico filed a writ of mandamus on Monday on behalf of journalist Carlos Berríos Polanco, demanding that the Puerto Rico Police Bureau release public information regarding Operation Stonegarden.

“We are talking about information concerning the use of public funds, coordina-

tion with federal agencies, equipment acquisition, and civil rights safeguards,” ACLU of Puerto Rico Legal Director Fermín Arraiza Navas said in a written statement. “That information does not belong to the agency, but to the country.”

“The law does not allow an agency to simply remain silent, let the deadline expire, and treat access to information as if it were optional,” Arraiza Navas added.

The petition was filed before the Court of First Instance in San Juan and was directed at Police Commissioner Joseph González Falcón. The writ asserts that the Police Bureau failed to respond -- within the timeframe stipulated by the Law on Transparency and Expedited Procedures for Access to Public Information -- to a request filed on Feb. 19 of this year.

Berríos Polanco requested documents regarding the administration and allocation

of Operation Stonegarden funds, as well as proposals, memoranda of understanding, and cooperation or sub-grant agreements signed with federal agencies between fiscal years 2018 and 2025. He also requested operational reports and data on arrests, citations, and other interventions carried out during those operations.

Operation Stonegarden is a Department of Homeland Security grant program, typically providing around $90 million annually to state, local and tribal law enforcement to enhance border security, according to FEMA.gov.

The ACLU of Puerto Rico said the law establishes a 20-business-day timeframe for addressing public information requests, noting that, in this case, the period began on Feb. 20 and expired on March 20. It added that, in the absence of a response or an extension, the Transparency Portal marked the request with the status of “administrative silence.”

Annette Martínez Orabona, executive director of the ACLU of Puerto Rico, asserted that access to public information is a constitutional right indispensable for over-

seeing power and for enabling the citizenry to evaluate government actions based on data and facts.

The request also seeks access to operational policies and training materials regarding the use of force, interactions with civilians, authority to intervene in immigration matters, and protocols for referring individuals to federal custody. Furthermore, it requests documents concerning civil rights safeguards, language access, discrimination prevention, complaint mechanisms, and community impact.

First territorial development plan for Loíza signed into law

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón on Monday signed the Municipality of Loíza’s first territorial development plan alongside Mayor Julia Nazario Fuentes. “This Plan allows Loíza to grow in an orderly manner, protecting its resources and creating new opportunities for its people,” the governor stated in written remarks.

“We have never had a Territorial Ordering Plan before,” Nazario added. “I want to thank the Governor for affixing her signature, as well as my planning team, who -- working in conjunction with the state planning agency -labored until this document was fully aligned with the recommendations of our citizens.”

The plan strengthens the commercial corridor along Route PR-187, promotes a

compact, mixed-use urban center, and stipulates that urban growth must be harmonized with the protection of the natural and cultural resources that distinguish Loíza.

Furthermore, it recognizes tourism development as a strategic component for the island’s eastern region by incorporating infrastructure projects, the creation of public spaces, and the establishment of a tourism route consortium in collaboration with neighboring municipalities.

Puerto Rico Planning Board Chairman Héctor Morales Martínez noted that the plan provides Loíza with a tool to guide its growth, strengthen its economy, and protect its resources, in accordance with the government’s public policy on planning.

The signing of the plan also aims to expand municipal autonomy, reinforce environmental protection, and promote risk mitigation initiatives -- including those addressing the challenge posed by coastal erosion -- with the ultimate goal of strengthening resilience and improving the quality of life for the residents of Loíza.

House delegation denounces majority move to address minimum wage bill in executive session

Rep. Héctor Ferrer Santiago, the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) minority leader in the lower chamber of the island Legislature, joined by Rep. Domingo Torres García, the alternate minority leader, on Monday questioned the true intentions of the New Progressive Party (NPP) legislative majority regarding their decision to hold an executive session concerning House Bill (HB) 1115, a measure that they said would upend the minimum wage review process in Puerto Rico.

Ferrer warned that, while an executive session is a standard part of the legislative process, using it to fast-track a measure after holding only a single public hearing -- and without broader analysis -- raises serious concerns.

“The minimum wage is not a game,” he said. “Attempting to push this legislation through via an executive session demonstrates that the NPP is seeking to avoid public scrutiny regarding a proposal that directly impacts the working class.”

Ferrer Santiago maintained that HB 1115 -- authored by Rep. Roberto López Román -- seeks to return the authority to

set the minimum wage to the Legislative Assembly, thereby eliminating the independent, technical body currently responsible for evaluating wage increases. He contended that this move would open the door to decisions driven by partisan interests rather than by economic data or the actual realities faced by workers.

“Eliminating a data-driven process and replacing it with political decision-making constitutes a dangerous regression,” the PDP minority leader added. “What they are proposing is to turn the minimum wage into a political football, directly harming thousands of Puerto Rican families.”

Torres García, meanwhile, emphasized that while an executive session does not constitute final approval of a measure, it nonetheless represents a critical step toward advancing it to the full floor of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives. In this regard, he noted that there are concerns that the executive session scheduled for Monday may be intended to issue a favorable report on the bill. Torres García called upon the legislative majority to halt the process and allow for an open, participatory, and responsible analysis.

“The right course of action is to conduct public hearings, ensure citizen participation, and formulate serious public policy -- not to make hasty decisions within closed processes in order to push through measures that harm the working people,” Torres García said.

Under bill, parents of minor athletes could enter some sports tourneys for free

The House Committee on Recreation and Sports, chaired by Rep. Luis “Josean” Jiménez, on Monday began its evaluation of House Bill 1158, aimed at establishing the “Act for the Protection and Accompaniment of Minors at Sporting Events.”

The bill seeks to mandate that any organizer of a sporting event involving a minor must allow free admission for one responsible adult for every participating minor, provided the event takes place at a public facility.

During the public hearing, Juan Carlos García Rivera, the

administrative director of the Legal Counsel Office at the Department of Recreation and Sports (DRD), expressed his support for the measure sponsored by Rep. Estrella Martínez Soto. He stated that it is “not only an act of social justice but also a necessary safety tool to ensure that no minor participates in large-scale events without the proper supervision and accompaniment of a responsible adult.”

However, he recommended imposing specific requirements on event promoters as a condition for granting the DRD’s endorsement or a permit to use public facilities, thereby preventing “organizers from raising registration fees to recoup lost ticket revenue.”

“A clause could be included in the lease agreement for the public facility in which the promoter commits not to increase registration charges,” García Rivera said.

Emma Sulsona Gándara, president of the Association of Private Schools, recommended consulting with the Department of Justice regarding the legal and constitutional aspects of the measure -- specifically those related to contractual freedom between the parties -- in light of “the potential State intervention in private economic activity and the potential impairment of existing contractual relationships between event organizers and their clients.”

Democrats eye a broader battlefield to capture Congress in November

As the mule-drawn floats and carts lined up for the annual Mule Day parade in Columbia, Tennessee,

Mayor Chaz Molder, a Democratic donkey in conservative country, was bantering with Republican officials when one official called out, “With as much money as you raised, you should have two more donkeys.”

Molder, 42, waved off the remark, but onlookers in mule T-shirts and floppy mule ears weighed in on the mayor’s unlikely challenge to Rep. Andy Ogles, with either a hardy “go get ’em, Chaz” or a quieter call of support for the incumbent, a hard-core conservative who in any other year would be hard to beat.

That Ogles’ seat is even in the conversation is an indication of the political shape Republicans find themselves in as they approach the midterm elections. Anger over President Donald Trump’s war in Iran, spiking gas prices and persistent affordability concerns have led to shifts of up to 20 percentage points in recent elections compared with the 2024 election that returned Trump to the White House.

An attendee holds a campaign sign for Chaz Molder, the mayor of Columbia and a Democratic House candidate, during the town’s annual Mule Day celebrations in Columbia, Tenn., April 11, 2026. Molder, a small-town mayor and turkey hunter with a penchant for retail politics, is one of several Democrats hoping that a focus on kitchen-table issues can reverse their party’s fortunes in places like rural Tennessee. (Brad J. Vest/The New York Times)

Tennessee Republicans thought they drew a safe seat during the last redistricting cycle, slicing a Democratic district in Nashville into three districts stretching into rural areas. The 5th Congressional District now reaches south of even Columbia, a town of nearly 50,000 about 50 miles south of the state capital. Ogles won it for the first time in 2022, by nearly 14 percentage points. The question is whether Trump’s 18-point advantage in the district in 2024 is enough to guarantee a win this fall.

Democrats are becoming increasingly aggressive at targeting Republican seats once considered out of reach. In recent weeks, the House Democratic campaign arm began paying for digital advertising in a South Texas district where Trump prevailed by 18 points and where a Tejano singing star, Bobby Pulido, is challenging a Republican incumbent, Rep. Monica De La Cruz. Democratic digital ads are also attacking Rep. Nick Begich in the at-large House contest that covers all of Alaska, where Trump won by 13 points.

Democrats are also expanding their ambitions in Senate elections, where the four-seat pickup needed for control once felt impossible. Democrats initially focused on maintaining seats in Georgia, Michigan and New Hampshire, with possible pickups in Maine and North Carolina. Now they are looking at Ohio, Alaska, Texas and Iowa — and wondering how to support independent candidates challenging Republicans in Nebraska and Montana.

And in the House, there are plans to soon add more seats that Trump carried by as many as 20 percentage points. On Friday, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee launched Spanish-language digital ads in the Florida districts of Rep. Cory Mills, which Trump won by 13 percentage points, and Rep. Laurel Lee, which Trump won by 11 points; a Miami-area district that he won by 15 points; and a neighboring seat that he won by 25 points.

Meantime, outside opportunities keep opening up, in

western Montana, where Rep. Ryan Zinke is retiring from a seat that Trump won with 54%, and in West Texas, where Tony Gonzales resigned amid a sex scandal from a seat the president won with 57%. (In contrast, Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat under similar scandal, left a district that Kamala Harris won with 66%.)

“Democrats are on offense, Republicans are running scared, and our expansive map reflects it,” said Rep. Suzan DelBene, the Seattle-area chair of the campaign committee.

In a House where Republicans hold a three-seat majority, Democrats need to flip just a few seats to win a majority next year. Harris won nine Republican-held districts, as currently configured, but House Republicans represent 21 additional districts that Trump carried by 10 points or less. Another 55 are in districts Trump carried by 10 to 20 points.

The special election in northwest Georgia two weeks ago had a 25-point swing away from Trump. No one thinks the country will put up numbers like that in November.

But some of the Democrats seen as more likely to make

gains in Republican-leaning districts have cleared more than $1 million in fundraising hauls.

Federal Election Commission reports filed last week showed Molder sitting on a war chest of more than $1.2 million, while Ogles’ campaign reported just $85,000 in cash on hand at the end of March.

“For any Republican that identifies as a Republican voter, they need to take this seriously,” Steve Hickey, chair of the Williamson County Republican Party, said of Ogles’ race and other midterm races. With part of his county included in the district, he added, “we are certainly not resting on our laurels.”

Republicans in Washington and Tennessee remain confident that districts like Ogles’ will remain under their party’s purview.

“Democrats targeting safe Republican seats in red states like Tennessee is pure political hallucination,” said Reilly Richardson, a spokesperson for the House Republican campaign arm. “They’re operating on our turf, and they’ll be stuck wasting their money in unwinnable districts.”

Spending from Republican-aligned super political action committees and other independent expenditure committees is likely to more than make up for whatever money candidates raise anyway.

Ogles’ district replaced what, for 150 years, had been a solidly Democratic seat. Rep. Jim Cooper, the centrist Democrat who first won the old district in 2002, retired, leaving it for Ogles, the former mayor of rural Maury County. Since then, Ogles, 54, has garnered scrutiny and controversy, including a federal investigation into his finances and backlash over a slew of anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim comments.

But Ogles has batted back both Republican and Democratic challengers in the past. In recent days, he has highlighted the renaming of a Columbia post office; his support for plans to open a new veterans clinic in the district; and his fierce opposition to illegal immigration, temporary protected status for Haitian migrants and Muslims of all kinds.

“I’m sorry to hurt your feelings, but ‘America First’ means Americans first,” Ogles said during a conference call with constituents Thursday, responding to a question about his opposition to a pathway to citizenship for refugees and other immigrants.

Haunted by ‘dark thoughts,’ Louisiana father kills 8 children

Eight children were killed and two other people were gravely wounded in a shooting spree that spanned at least three locations in Shreveport, Louisiana, and ended with the gunman shot dead after a police chase Sunday morning, authorities said.

The gunman, Shamar Elkins, 31, had mental health problems and had recently expressed suicidal thoughts, family members said in interviews.

The children ranged in age from 3 to 11, officials said, and seven of the eight were Elkins’. He shot them execution style, according to a spokesperson for the Shreveport Police Department.

The children were identified by the Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office as Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5.

Shamar Elkins also shot two other people,

including his wife, who was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries Sunday, officials and relatives said.

After the shootings, authorities said, Elkins took a car by force, and police officers pursued him. The officers opened fire and Elkins died, Cpl. Chris Bordelon of the Shreveport Police Department said in a news conference. It is unclear if officers killed Elkin or if he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Mayor Tom Arceneaux of Shreveport described the killings in a news conference as “maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had.”

On Sunday afternoon, friends and relatives of Elkins said they were processing the devastating toll of the killings. Police have not offered a possible motive and their investigation is ongoing.

In interviews, relatives described Elkins as someone who was recently struggling with his mental health and who was stressed about his relationship with his wife, Shaneiqua Pugh.

Earlier this month, on Easter Sunday, he called his mother, Mahelia Elkins, and his stepfather, Marcus Jackson. Mahelia Elkins and

cocaine addiction, so she left him to be raised by a family friend, Betty Walker. Mahelia Elkins reconnected with her son more than a decade ago.

Walker, who spoke to authorities Sunday but did not witness the shootings, said in an interview that Shamar Elkins shot his wife several times, including in the head and in the stomach.

Walker said she last saw Elkins last weekend when his family came over for dinner. Nothing appeared off with him at the time, she said.

“I was getting up this morning to make myself some coffee, and I got the call,” she said. “My babies — my babies are gone.”

Records show that Elkins had at least two prior convictions, including for driving while intoxicated in 2016 and for the illegal use of weapons in 2019.

In a police description of the March 2019 incident, an officer wrote that Elkins pulled a 9 mm handgun out of his waistband and shot at a vehicle five times after the driver of the car had pulled a silver handgun on him. One of the bullets Elkins shot was found near a school where children were playing outside.

at least three locations in Shreveport on Sunday morning, the authorities said. (Shreveport Police Department via The New York Times)

Jackson said in interviews that their son sounded despondent. They said they could hear his children playing in the background during the call.

Shamar Elkins told them through tears that he wanted to take his own life. He told Jackson that his wife wanted a divorce, and that he was drowning in “dark thoughts.”

“I told him, ‘You can beat stuff, man. I don’t care what you’re going through, you can beat it,’” Jackson said. “Then I remember him telling me: ‘Some people don’t come back from their demons.’”

Shamar Elkins hung up, promising to tell his children, dressed in their Sunday best, that their grandparents in Oklahoma City said hello.

Mahelia Elkins said she did not know exactly what problems her son was having with his wife. Records show that they were married in 2024. She added that her son worked for UPS and had served in the Army.

The Army said in a statement Sunday that Shamar Elkins served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from August 2013 to August 2020 as a signal support system specialist and a fire support specialist. He had no deployment and left the Army as a private.

Mahelia Elkins said she was not extremely close with her son. She had Shamar Elkins when she was a teenager and struggling with a crack

Willie Vasher, who used to work at UPS with Elkins, said in an interview that his children were friends with the Elkins children when they lived in Shreveport in 2024. Elkins appeared like a typical devoted father, Vasher said.

The only thing that stuck out to him about Elkins was that he often appeared stressed. He had a bald spot on his head because he had a tendency to nervously pull out his hair throughout the day, Vasher said. Mahelia Elkins said she also noticed that tic.

“All day I’ve been asking, ‘What happened,’” Vasher said.

In recent weeks, Shamar Elkins’ mother and stepfather had felt uneasy about their son, even as he appeared to signal some hope. He shared a prayer on Facebook this month that began: “Dear God, Today I ask you to help me guard my mind and my emotions.”

He sent them a photo of his family. His mother texted him last Tuesday to ask how they were, and he replied, “Everyone is doing OK.”

On Thursday, Mahelia Elkins texted: “I love y’all. Give my grandson and my granddaughters a kiss from grandma. Thanks so much.”

He never replied.

On Sunday, Jackson got the first hint that something was wrong when strangers commented on his Facebook posts to say Shamar Elkins was “the devil.”

Mahelia Elkins took out her phone and read a headline that eight children — including her grandchildren — were dead.

“Why, God?” she said, crying. “Why?”

The four lessons liberals should consider after Orban’s defeat

The defeat of Viktor Orban’s government in Hungary’s parliamentary elections may usher in a new era in Western commentary, when neither conservatives nor liberals will be tempted to draw sweeping lessons from a small landlocked country with a population smaller than the state of Michigan.

But before the temptation recedes, let me give in to it just once. And since the obvious lesson from Hungary for the Republican Party — an attempt to build a new conservative order will fail if it’s perceived as authoritarian and corrupt — probably comes too late for the Trump administration, I want to focus on realities that liberals might consider as they cheer Orbanism’s defeat.

The first lesson is that Western democracy under populist conditions is more resilient than a certain kind of anxious analysis suggests. There is a very important distinction between having a leader who makes authoritarian moves and actually being an authoritarian state, and the road from the first scenario to the second is not a simple matter of flipping a switch labeled “autocracy.” Orban ruled Hungary, a country with a thin democratic tradition, for 16 long years, and yet despite the power his circle wielded over industry and media, his rise and fall tracked the rise and fall of his

popular support. Hungary had a mostly pliant press and a gerrymandered Parliament, but it was not East Germany or Putin’s Russia; when the people tired of Orban, he was gone.

This is not an argument that it would be perfectly fine if an American president (of either party) consolidated as much power as Orban enjoyed. It’s merely a case for not living inside worst-case scenarios where the United States — a society not at all like Hungary, with a vast array of competing power centers and centuries of democratic tradition — is one election or one Caesarist chief executive away from permanent dictatorship.

This leads to the second lesson of Hungary for liberals, which is that the best political response to populism is usually to deal with its concrete policy demands, rather than insisting that a democratic emergency requires people to back the establishment no matter what.

Peter Magyar, the incoming Hungarian prime minister, ran against Orbanist corruption, but otherwise he promised his own form of nationalism and even tacked to Orban’s right on immigration. In the process he vindicated the most basic theory of how to respond to a populist era: Move to the cultural right, especially on immigration.

It’s a simple admonition but one that establishment leaders in both Europe and America have found nearly impossible to follow, preferring to treat their periodic electoral victories as opportunities to return — as the Biden administration did, to its own destruction — to the very policies that prompted populist rebellion in the first place.

That temptation remains powerful, with various autopsies on Orbanism doubling as epitaphs for the entire post-liberal era, casting its intellectual scene especially as a Potemkin village funded by Hungarian largess. This brings me to the third point I wish liberals would internalize: The crisis of the post-Cold War order exists independently of would-be “post-liberal” intellectuals, including the writers and thinkers whom Orban’s government supported.

Shutter the Budapest cafes named for Roger Scruton, purge the conservative university Orban built up, and it won’t have any effect on the prospects of right-wing parties in the rather more important nations of France, Germany and Britain. That’s because the phenomena of populism and nationalism are organic reactions to an age of mass migration, collapsed birthrates, deindustrialization and digital anomie. Conservative intellectuals have attached themselves to the reaction, but they did not create it. You will not reckon with the post-liberal era by defunding right-wing academic conferences.

Finally, you also will not reckon with this moment until you see that it is not only the populists who can be antidemocratic or illiberal. Orbanism emerged initially as a popular reaction to the impositions of the European Union, a

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban looks on as President Donald Trump speaks during a bilateral lunch at the White House in Washington, Nov. 7, 2025. political arrangement that is sometimes bloodlessly described as suffering from a “democratic deficit,” which is to say that it often allows a bureaucratic caste to ignore public opinion and trample national sovereignty. And Orban has shared a continent for the past decade with governments that in the name of liberalism perpetuate their own soft tyrannies, their own traducement of human rights and human dignity. It is not Hungary but Britain that regularly arrests and imprisons its citizens for social media posts. It is not Hungary but Finland and Iceland where Christians can face legal harassment for expressing traditional views on sexuality and marriage. It is not in Hungary but in the Netherlands that young people suffering from psychiatric conditions can be euthanized.

And it is no brief for the place Orbanism ended, in corruption and defeat, to suggest that many institutions that imagine themselves to be treating an illiberal infection somewhere out there, among the hoi polloi, badly need to heal themselves.

C3Tec impulsa la innovación femenina con la 9na edición del programa Codepillars

Scheherazade promises kids one night of magic

Scheherazade.

If you can spell it you’ve won half the battle.

But there’s another lesson in this famous ballet by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, one the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra (PRSO), under the baton of Karlo Flores, will serve up on a special plate complete with dancing and narration for families with children. This exotic adventure will be held Saturday at a special time, special price and special invitation to kids under three (usually barred from concerts).

Not that there’ s anything babyish about this lavish presentation, which attendees of all ages will enjoy (if they can take a few misplaced howls of delight).

Once upon a time, there was an Arabian princess named (you know) who offered herself in marriage to a cruel sultan named Shahryar to save the kingdom. The sultan, who was so angry at women (because his first wife had cheated on him) that he set out to punish the whole sex. Every day, he forced one young woman of his kingdom to marry him, and after one day had each one killed. After he had gone through about 300 wives, and there were no more eligible women left, this brave (and very smart) young lady, daughter of his close adviser, married Shahryar over her father’s protestations. When they went to bed the first night, she began telling him a story, but stopped. She waited until the morning to finish the story but immediately started another one. She repeated this ruse for 1001 nights,

sicians like Gustavo Dudamel, director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, has spawned more than 60 versions throughout the world, including El Reforma USA.

Flores, who has a bachelor’s degree in violin performance from the conservatory, dedicated himself for 15 years to that key orchestra instrument before becoming seduced by conducting. From the podium, he has developed several programs to attract children and youth to the many positive aspects of music.

His concert, despite the hard-to-spell title, should delight listeners of all ages, yet still get them home before junior’s bedtime.

The show begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the Pablo Casals Symphony Hall at Luis A. Ferré Performing Arts Center in Santurce. Special prices are in effect to attract the whole family.

always leaving him with a cliffhanger ending before he fell asleep.

Each night, she wove story after story -- about Ali Baba and the 40 thieves, about Sinbad the sailor and about Aladdin and his magic lantern, each night remembering to keep Shahryar too intrigued to kill her. Also woven into her stories were lessons of love, mercy and justice.

Meanwhile, the sultan got the message and the couple even had children together.

With a master’s degree in conducting from Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., he is the academic coordinator and conductor for the 100x35 music program for children and youth, which operates under the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music in Miramar. Ye concert in Poland is canceled

Astadium in Poland announced late last week the cancellation of a summer concert by Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, as European countries bristle at the rapper’s attempt at a comeback after years of antisemitic comments and a song titled “Heil Hitler.”

“In a country marked by the history of the Holocaust, we cannot pretend that this is just entertainment,” Marta Cienkowska, the country’s minister of culture and

national heritage, wrote in Polish on social media last week.

Adam Strzyzewski, the director of Silesian Stadium in Chorzow, Poland, said Friday on social media that the concert scheduled for June 19 would not take place because of “formal and legal reasons.” Ye did not immediately respond to the news on social media.

This month, the British government barred Ye from entering the country, which resulted in the cancellation of a festival he was supposed to headline. Ye also post-

poned a show in Marseille, France, as the French interior ministry considered banning the event.

The shows are part of a small tour to promote Ye’s latest album, “Bully,” with performances scheduled in Istanbul, New Delhi and Madrid. In the United States, Ye had no issues with his first live shows since 2021, playing two sold-out nights near Los Angeles.

The tour comes a few months after Ye took out a full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal that said he regretted his antisemitic behavior and attributed it to untreated bipolar disorder. It was not his first apology, with Ye posting in Hebrew in 2023 to ask for forgiveness from Jewish people. In 2025, he took back that apology and declared himself a Nazi.

Wall Street closes slightly down on renewed tensions between US, Iran

U.S. stocks closed slightly lower on Monday, with each of the three major indexes coming off a third straight week of gains, as renewed U.S.-Iran tensions put the durability of a two-week ceasefire in question.

Iran is considering attending peace talks with the U.S. in Pakistan, a senior Iranian official told Reuters, following moves by Islamabad to end a U.S. blockade of Iran’s ports.

However, a separate source said Vice President JD Vance was still in the U.S., denying reports he was on his way to Pakistan for talks.

Iran opened the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, fueling a broad market surge, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq posting record highs for a third straight session for their biggest weekly gains in 11 months. However, Tehran closed the crucial shipping waterway again over the weekend.

U.S. crude jumped 6.87% to settle at $89.61 a barrel and Brent rose to settle at $95.48 per barrel, up 5.64% on the day, lifting the S&P 500 energy index 0.21%.

“The news over the weekend with the re-closure of the strait or the boarding of the Iran vessel, that gets us a little away from it’s fully reopened, but the timing doesn’t look like it’s still that far off as it was with at least talks over the week,” said Tom Hainlin, national investment strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management in Minneapolis.

“But you’re in the middle of first-quarter earnings season too, so then the question is, has there been any bleed over into the real economy, and so far you’ve heard from the banks that consumer credit looks okay and their spending looks okay.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 4.87 points, or 0.01%, to 49,442.56, the S&P 500 lost 16.92 points, or 0.24%, to 7,109.14 and the Nasdaq Composite declined 64.09 points, or 0.26%, to 24,404.39.

Communication services was the worst-performing sector, as Meta was down 2.56% to snap a nine-session winning streak, its longest since October.

Netflix fell 2.55% to also weigh on the sector, and has fallen about 12% since announcing its quarterly results and the departure of co-founder Reed Hastings last week.

The CBOE Volatility Index, known as Wall Street’s “fear gauge”, gained after falling for the past eight sessions and was last up 1.37 points at 18.85, after reaching a one-week high of 19.99. Investors will look to assess the impact of the Iran war on corporate earnings and on the broader economy, with companies including Lockheed Martin and IBM scheduled to report later this week.

Among other movers, QXO shares lost 3.12% after the construction supplies distributor struck a $17 billion deal to acquire building products distributor and installer TopBuild, whose shares surged 19.38%.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.08-to-1 ratio on the NYSE, but declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.01-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.

The S&P 500 posted 44 new 52-week highs and no new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 173 new highs and 42 new lows.

Iran and Washington plan new talks in Pakistan

Despite sending mixed signals in recent days, both the United States and Iran gave clearer indications Monday that they were planning to send negotiators to peace talks in Pakistan this week.

Vice President JD Vance is expected to leave Washington for Islamabad on Tuesday, according to two U.S. officials, and two Iranian officials said that Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the influential political and military figure who attended the last round of talks, would attend if Vance also did. The new round of talks had been in doubt as the countries traded threats over the weekend, and as their two-week ceasefire neared its expiration.

Both countries’ presidents have reiterated their hardened stances. President Donald Trump said Monday on social media that “if Iran’s new leaders (Regime Change!) are smart, Iran can have a great and prosperous future!” And Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran’s president, said that continuing the war “benefits no one,” but followed up with a post saying that there was “deep historical mistrust” looming over the upcoming talks.

(Arash Khamooshi/The New York Times)

The conflicting signals echoed those Iran sent before the first round of talks, which ended without an agreement to end

the war. Iran had cast doubt on those negotiations even taking place, only for its delegation to arrive hours later.

The two-week truce, which went into effect April 8, is being tested in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for oil and gas that Iran has sought to control, prompting the United States to blockade Iranian ports. A U.S. Navy destroyer fired on an Iranian cargo ship Sunday after it defied that blockade, Trump said, and ultimately U.S. forces seized it. Iran’s armed forces called it “piracy,” warning that they would soon retaliate, according to Tasnim, a semiofficial Iranian news agency

Here’s what else we are covering:

— Pakistan: Pakistan was preparing to host new U.S.-Iran peace talks. Officials said they would deploy 10,000 extra security personnel in Islamabad, the capital.

— Lebanon: The U.S. State Department will host another round of ambassador-level talks between Israel and Lebanon on Thursday, the department said. Israel wants the disarmament of Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group, and Lebanon wants a complete Israeli withdrawal from its south.

— Energy prices: The U.S. energy secretary, Chris Wright, acknowledged Sunday that gasoline prices in the United States could remain elevated for months. Oil prices are up by about 33% since the war began on Feb. 28.

US has turned back 27 ships since Strait of Hormuz blockade started

The U.S. Navy has turned back 27 ships trying to enter or exit Iranian ports since a U.S. blockade outside the contested Strait of Hormuz began about a week ago, the military’s Central Command said Monday.

A U.S. military official also said Monday that a team of Marines was searching as many as 5,000 containers aboard the Touska, an Iranian cargo ship that the Navy disabled and seized in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday after it tried to evade the blockade.

It was the first time a vessel was reported to have tried to evade the U.S.-imposed blockade on any ship entering or exiting Iranian ports since it took effect last week.

U.S. officials will determine what to do with the disabled vessel once the search is completed, a U.S. military official said Monday, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters. One option would be to tow the stricken ship to Oman, independent specialists said. An alternative would be to let the Touska steam to an Iranian port, if it can.

The ship’s crew will be returning to Iran soon, a second U.S. military official said.

“The message is out that most ships are not

wanting to go out there,” Kevin Donegan, a retired vice admiral and former top Navy commander in the Middle East, said in an interview Monday.

The Touska’s captain had ignored multiple radioed U.S. warnings to halt.

The guided-missile destroyer Spruance, one of more than a dozen Navy warships enforcing the U.S. blockade, ordered the vessel’s crew to evacuate its engine room. The Spruance then fired several rounds from its Mk-45 gun into the ship’s propulsion system as it steamed toward the port of Bandar Abbas in Iran, Central Command said in a statement that included a video of the firing.

The Mk-45 deck gun, located on the Spruance’s bow, can shoot 16 to 20 rounds per minute. The 5-inch-diameter projectiles it fires weigh about 70 pounds each and contain the equivalent of roughly 10 pounds of TNT.

A spokesperson for Iran’s military reiterated a threat Monday to “take the necessary action against the U.S. military” in response to the ship’s seizure, Iran’s state broadcaster reported. Iran has waited to take action so far in order to protect the ship’s crew and some of their family members, he said.

Social media accounts in Iran said the

country had launched retaliatory drone strikes against U.S. Navy ships in the region, a purported attack that the Pentagon said Monday never happened.

The Touska was one of “several vessels of interest” that U.S. intelligence analysts have been monitoring in recent days, both inside and outside the blockade boundary, the U.S. military official said.

“We have eyes on every single one of them,” Adm. Brad Cooper, the head of Central Command, told reporters Friday.

Gen. Dan Caine, chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Thursday that U.S. military commanders elsewhere in the world, and especially in the Indo-Pacific region, would “actively pursue any Iranian-flagged vessel or any vessel attempting to provide material support to Iran.”

Maduro is gone, and the purge has begun

U.S. Special Forces brought down President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela swiftly and publicly. Now, the people who kept him in power are being purged gradually and inconspicuously. Some have been fired or detained, and others are anxiously looking over their shoulders, worried they might be next.

Oligarchs close to Maduro’s family have been snatched from their homes. His political allies have been summarily removed from their posts. His relatives have been sidelined from business deals and barred from media appearances.

The housecleaning is being carried out by Maduro’s former vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, who is running the country under instructions from the Trump administration. The detentions and leadership purges have unfolded without public explanation, but often with the approval — and sometimes at the urging — of the White House, according to people close to Rodríguez’s government.

After Maduro was dragged off in January to a New York jail, Rodríguez presented herself as a reluctant and temporary stand-in for a fallen leader, denouncing his capture as an illegal attack on her country.

But now, with Maduro gone, she is dismantling his ruling coterie and embarking on the largest redistribution of power in Venezuela in decades.

The overhaul of national leadership, combined with sweeping new laws and her alliance with President Donald Trump, is reshaping Venezuela and its management of one of the planet’s largest oil reserves, just as the world grapples with the energy turmoil caused by war in the Middle East.

In the three months since Maduro’s capture, Rodríguez has changed 17 ministers, replaced military commanders and installed new diplomats. She has also overseen the detention of at least three businesspeople tied to Maduro, fired several of his relatives and cut off most of his family from oil contracts.

In their places, she has appointed her own loyalists or championed businesspeople beholden to her, while opening the doors to American oil and mining investors.

The changes have brought little transparency or pluralism to a government that remains authoritarian. Venezuela’s opposition says that rather than returning the country to democracy, Rodríguez is solidifying her rule.

But she is hardly making all decisions on her own. After capturing Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in an overwhelming show of force,

Protesters demonstrating for and against the U.S. capture of Nicolás Maduro argue from behind barricades across the street from the federal courthouse in lower Manhattan, where Maduro, the ousted president of Venezuela, and his wife, Cilia Florez, were scheduled to be arraigned later on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026. (Karsten Moran/ The New York Times)

the Trump administration threatened to attack Venezuela again if the new leaders refused to cooperate. Several senior Venezuelan officials and government insiders have likened Rodríguez’s rule to governing with a gun to her head.

Rodríguez is now using that threat of U.S. coercion to go after ruling party power brokers once considered untouchable. The result has been a political win for Trump and Rodríguez, allowing U.S. officials to settle scores with Maduro allies who had defied them, while simultaneously cementing Rodríguez’s leadership.

Venezuela’s transformation from U.S. adversary to a protectorate has been head spinning for most Venezuelans.

Polls show a large majority of Venezuelans welcome the end of Maduro’s 13-year autocratic reign, which he enforced through violence, corruption and electoral fraud.

Many also remain skeptical of Rodríguez, a longtime official of the governing Socialist Party who has never held elected office.

But for Maduro’s friends, business associates and governing party companions, the new political landscape has ushered in an unfamiliar swirl of anxiety and danger.

More than a dozen spoke with The New York Times on the condition of anonymity, fearing reprisal. Some said they had been placed under surveillance by Venezuela’s secret police since Maduro’s ouster. Others said they had tried to stay out of Caracas, the capital, and have considered exile.

The Venezuelan government did not

respond to questions for this article. A White House spokesperson, Anna Kelly, said the Trump administration had a mutually beneficial relationship with the Rodríguez government.

“We are dealing very well with President Delcy Rodríguez,” Kelly said. “Oil is starting to flow, and large amounts of money, unseen for many years, will soon be greatly helping the people of Venezuela.”

The people who lost out from Maduro’s downfall are part of a disparate group. They include relatives of Maduro and his predecessor Hugo Chávez, many of whom amassed great wealth in the nearly three decades of their combined rule.

They also include businesspeople who owe their fortunes to personal ties to the two presidents, as well as veterans of the socialist movement formed by Chávez in the 1990s, which became known as chavismo.

The Trump administration had been considering Rodríguez as Maduro’s successor since 2025, and had indirect contact with her. There has been no evidence that she was privy to the U.S. military’s plans, yet that fact has not eased the distrust within the governing party.

Rodríguez’s caretaker post began hours after Maduro’s capture, on Jan. 3, with a fiery speech denouncing U.S. aggression. A week later, Rodríguez led a retinue of power brokers and Cuban officials to commemorate dozens of Cuban and Venezuelan service members who died in the American attack.

“We are not handing down a legacy of traitors and cowards,” Rodríguez said in a televised speech intended to project unity.

Most of those by her side that day have since been cast aside.

Maduro’s longest-serving minister, Gen. Vladimir Padrino López, was fired as defense minister in March and later given a much less important post running agriculture. Maduro’s son, Nicolás Maduro Guerra, and a son of Flores, Yosser Gavidia Flores, have been sidelined from lucrative business deals with the state, according to government insiders.

Maduro’s attorney general, Tarek William Saab, was fired, given a consolation post, and then fired again. Camilla Fabri, Maduro’s immigration envoy, lost her post. Days later, her husband was detained.

And then there’s Cuba’s foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez. Since attending Rodríguez’s speech, he has watched his country’s decadeslong alliance with Venezuela unravel in weeks.

As Rodríguez has tightened control, the dismissals grew bolder.

The first Maduro confidant to fall was Alex Saab, a Colombian-born businessperson and Fabri’s husband, who has made billions from preferential food and oil trade contracts and

is under indictment in the United States on corruption-related charges.

On Jan. 16, Rodríguez wrote on social media that Saab was no longer Venezuela’s industry minister, thanking him “for his service to the Fatherland” and saying he would “assume new responsibilities.”

Two weeks later, Saab was detained. U.S. officials and Rodríguez are now negotiating his fate, which includes potential extradition to the United States.

People close to Rodríguez said she had overseen the detention of two other prominent businesspeople close to Maduro’s family: Raúl Gorrín and Wilmer Ruperti. Gorrín also faces a corruption-related indictment in the United States.

Saab’s lawyer declined to comment. Legal representatives for Ruperti and Gorrín did not respond to requests for comment.

Rodríguez’s administration has neither commented on the detentions nor announced any charges, leaving Maduro’s allies to speculate who might be next.

Rodríguez in March widened the purge to the armed forces, firing Venezuela’s entire military leadership, including Padrino López, once considered one of Venezuela’s most powerful men.

One Venezuelan general said that many see the dismissals of senior commanders as the start of a much deeper, U.S.-guided overhaul of Venezuela’s armed forces.

People close Rodríguez’s government said she had coordinated some replacements with the Trump administration. U.S. officials, they said, have also pressured her to go after American adversaries like Gorrín and Saab.

The winners of Rodríguez’s economic restructuring include Venezuela’s traditional economic elites, who once sided with the opposition but made peace with chavismo. Their bet on stability over democracy has given them access to foreign markets and the U.S. banking system.

Western investors are other beneficiaries. They have recently been descending on Caracas’ luxury hotels searching for bargain assets in the oil, mining and tourism industries.

Only one senior minister in Maduro’s government remains in his post: Diosdado Cabello, the interior minister who oversaw the governing party’s repression apparatus.

Cabello is wanted by the United States on drug-trafficking charges and had clashed with Rodríguez in the past. But his connections to armed pro-government groups have also made him a valuable ally — and a risky target.

To hang on to power, Cabello has recast himself, from ruling party pit bull to a patriotic guarantor of stability.

Reopening Strait of Hormuz would ease oil crisis but only so much

A speedboat armed with machine guns and operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps draws nears U.S. Navy vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz on May 10, 2021. Although much of the regular Iranian navy is destroyed, the IRGC can still deploy small, speedy boats like these to disrupt shipping. (U.S. Navy via The New York Times)

Shipping companies are facing confusion and uncertainty about the status of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow passageway through which a significant share of the world’s energy flows, as they assess mixed messages from officials in Iran and the United States.

But even if the strait fully opens soon — on Saturday, Iran’s military said it would reimpose “strict” control over traffic — it will take weeks for substantial amounts of Persian Gulf oil and gas to reach buyers around the world.

And it will be much longer before companies repair the damage that has been inflicted on one of the world’s most important energy-producing regions.

It is likely to be a long time before a gallon of gasoline costs less than $3 a gallon, as it did before the United States and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28. Shortages of certain products like jet fuel and natural gas may also persist in some countries for weeks or longer.

“We don’t expect oil prices — and therefore pump prices — to go back to prewar levels,” said Arjun Murti, a partner at Veriten, an energy research and investment firm based in Houston.

Think of the Strait of Hormuz, which sits between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, as a valve. It must be open for energy to flow. But whether shipping companies reposition tankers and producers turn wells back on will depend heavily on whether they believe that the détente between Iran and the United States and Israel is durable.

Spencer Dale, who until recently served as the chief economist of the London-based oil company BP, said that producers who have been forced to turn off their oil and gas wells will be reluctant to restart them “until people have confidence that you have a lasting agreement.”

Traders were hopeful on Friday, when the most commonly cited international price of oil, Brent futures, fell 9% to about $90 a barrel, the lowest settlement price since the second week of the war.

But for those who needed an actual tanker full of oil, the price on Friday was higher: almost $99 a barrel, according to Argus Media. That second price, often called the spot price, more closely reflects what companies, such as refiners, pay for commodities — and therefore how much energy will cost the economy as a whole.

“Normally this distinction between the two markets is something for oil geeks

and traders to worry about,” said Dale, now a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science. “It really matters right now.”

One of the biggest variables for oil prices will be whether shipping companies — and their insurers — believe that the strait is safe.

The status of the waterway remained murky on Saturday after Iran’s military said that the strait would remain “under strict control.” A day earlier, the country’s foreign minister said that the strait was “completely open.” President Donald Trump framed the foreign minister’s announcement as a breakthrough but, complicating matters, Trump said that the United States would maintain its blockade on ships headed to or from Iranian ports. That has effectively prevented Iran from exporting energy in recent days.

Ships had not returned to the strait in great numbers as of Friday afternoon.

Should shipping from Iran’s neighbors restart, a first order of business will be for the tankers full of energy that have been stuck in the Persian Gulf to leave for countries in Asia and Europe that depend heavily on the region. Empty vessels would also have an opportunity to pick up fuel from storage tanks, making space for newly extracted oil and natural gas. All of that would give the global economy an infusion of energy that it badly needed.

But the war has inflicted the kind of damage that takes months, if not years, to repair. Not only have producers turned off an estimated 10% of global oil supply, but more than 80 energy facilities in the region have been damaged, many of them severely, according to the International Energy Agency. Restoring output to prewar levels could take up to two years, Fatih Birol, the agency’s executive director, said this past week.

The San Juan Daily Star

Waking up in pain? Your sleep position may need adjusting.

Ever wake up with a crick in your neck or a pain in your lower back? Are you roused from sleep by heartburn, or a partner complaining that you snore?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, your sleep position might be to blame.

There is no one “right” way to sleep, said Dr. Indira Gurubhagavatula, a professor of sleep medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

But if you are waking up with discomfort or stiffness or having restless nights, certain adjustments to your sleeping posture may help. Here are some of the most common issues associated with how people sleep, and what to do about them.

On your side

Many of us sleep on our sides with no problem. But for some people — especially those with joint issues or who are older — it can put a lot of pressure on the shoulder, hip and knees, said Dr. Rohan Jotwani, a pain medicine specialist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City.

Sleeping on top of a memory foam or gel mattress pad can help by distributing your weight more evenly, he said. Placing a pillow between your knees can also reduce hip, knee and lower back pain by keeping your legs and hips aligned.

When you’re on your side, using a pillow that is either too thick or too thin can force your spine out of alignment, leading to muscle and joint strain. Or it can put pressure on nerves, causing pain, tingling or weakness in your shoulders, arms or upper back, Gurubhagavatula said.

Those who have a deviated septum may find that sleeping on their side affects how well they breathe, said Dr. Gerald Suh, an ear, nose, throat and sleep specialist in Princeton, New Jersey. The condition occurs when the thin layer of cartilage and bone that divides the nasal cavity is off-center or crooked. It is common, he said, affecting probably more than 80% of people, though only about 30% notice an influence on breathing.

For some, it’s easier to breathe when they sleep on the side that the narrower nostril is on, allowing air to flow unimpeded through the wider one, Suh said.

On your back

The goal when sleeping is to maintain the natural curvature of the spine and neck “without creating too many bends and twists and turns,” Jotwani said. Sleeping on your back is best for maintaining this alignment, he said, but it can also cause or exacerbate other issues.

The symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea, for instance — which occurs when the muscles in the throat relax during sleep and cause snoring and temporary pauses in breathing — can worsen when lying face up, said Azadeh Yadollahi, a scientist who studies sleep and airway disorders at the University Health Network in Toronto.

If you have sleep apnea, sleeping on your side can help keep the airway open and let you breathe more freely, Gurubhagavatula said.

Sleeping on your back may also worsen acid reflux symptoms by allowing stomach acid to seep into the esophagus. And while any sleeping position can lead to nasal congestion, lying face up can cause you to feel even more stuffy, especially when dealing with a cold or allergies, Suh said.

Propping up the top half of your body with a pillow or a wedge-shaped bolster helps relieve acid reflux, Gurubhagavatula said. Or try elevating the head of your bed by putting blocks under the legs of your bed frame, she said. Some research also suggests that sleeping on your left side can help, too.

Pregnant women are often told to avoid sleeping on their backs after about 20 weeks to prevent the uterus from putting pressure on a large vein that carries blood from the lower body to the heart. That could restrict blood flow to vital organs or lower blood pressure, leading to lightheadedness.

When pregnant, it’s safest to sleep on your side, especially the left side, as this moves the weight off the vein, Gurubhagavatula said. This should help with pregnancyrelated acid reflux, too, she added.

On your stomach

This is the least common sleeping position, Gurubhagavatula said. It also tends to be the hardest on your spine. Having your head turned to one side all night strains the neck, Jotwani said. And that can be compounded by a thick pillow that angles your neck upward.

The position can also hyperextend your lower back. In a review published in 2025, researchers found that sleeping on the stomach is associated with more lower back pain than sleeping on the back or side.

If you enjoy sleeping on your stomach but wake up with low back pain, it can help to put a small pillow under your pelvis. This prevents your abdomen from sinking into the mattress and putting too much arch in your back, Jotwani said. But if possible, he added, sleep on your back or side for better alignment.

How to learn to sleep in a different position

Switching to a new position “can be very daunting,” Jotwani said. He recommended identifying a new position and then trying to spend at least a little time in it each night. Over time, your body will get used to it.

Strategic placement of pillows, special cushions or devices can help keep you in one position throughout the night, Gurubhagavatula said. To stay on your side, try placing a body pillow behind you, she suggested. There are also cushions that strap onto your back to keep you on your side, and electronic devices that vibrate when they sense that you’ve rolled onto your back. They’re the technological equivalent of getting elbowed by your bed partner, Yadollahi said.

If you’re new to sleeping on your back, Gurubhagavatula said you might be more comfortable with a small pillow under your knees, even if it feels awkward for the first few nights.

Your sleep position is just one of many factors that contributes to your overall sleep quality, Gurubhagavatula said. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, getting adequate exercise and keeping your bedroom dark and cool are all important.

But, she added, if getting a good night’s sleep can be “as simple as turning onto your side, then why not try it?”

Humans had dogs before they had farming, ancient DNA confirms

In the waning days of the last ice age, when humans were still hunting with spears and using cave walls as canvases, a hot new trend was spreading through the Paleolithic landscape.

By roughly 14,000 years ago, huntergatherer societies across Europe had discovered dogs, scientists reported in two new papers, which were published recently in the journal Nature. The studies provide the first definitive genetic evidence that dogs existed during the Paleolithic period, before humans developed agriculture.

The researchers, who used several approaches to analyze DNA extracted from ancient canine specimens, identified Paleolithic dogs at five archaeological sites in Europe and Western Asia. The oldest of these dogs lived about 15,800 years ago, pushing back the oldest known genetic evidence of dogs by nearly 5,000 years.

These early dogs came from sites that extend from Britain to Turkey, and were associated with several very different huntergatherer populations. But the dogs themselves were closely related. Across the five sites, the dogs were more genetically similar than the humans were, the researchers found.

“The people are so different, but the dogs are very much the same,” said Greger Larson, a paleogeneticist at the University of Oxford and one of the authors on both new studies, which were conducted by large, international scientific teams.

The research provides new insight into the early history of dogs, as well as the genetic legacy and the interspecies relationship that extends to today.

“It’s really a major step forward in advancing our knowledge of humans and dogs,” said Elaine Ostrander, a canine genomics expert at the National Human Genome Research Institute who was not involved in the research.

Dog bones

Dogs descended from ancient wolves, but exactly when and where they first emerged remains a subject of intense scientific debate. Some scientists have suggested that the size and shape of ancient canine specimens indicate that dogs and wolves diverged more than 30,000 years ago.

But such remains can be tricky to identify definitively. In some cases, geneticists have determined that canine remains that initially appeared to be from dogs actually belonged

In an undated image from Kathryn Killackey, an artist’s reconstruction of a site in Turkey 15,800 years ago, based on evidence from archaeological excavations by University of Liverpool researchers. New research pushes the first genetic evidence of dogs back by 5,000 years and suggests that hunter-gatherer groups may have acquired dogs from one another. (Kathryn Killackey via The New York Times)

to now-extinct wolves. In others, they haven’t been able to recover enough DNA to make a conclusive call about species. Before the new research, the oldest definitive dog DNA dated back just 10,900 years.

In one of the new studies, scientists assembled and analyzed the complete genomes of eight ancient canines and compared them with ancient and modern wolves and dogs. Six of the animals had genomes that resembled those of dogs, they concluded. And two of those dogs dated back to the Paleolithic era — a 15,800-year-old dog from Pinarbasi, Turkey, and a 14,300-year-old dog from Gough’s Cave, an archaeological site in Britain.

The genomes from those two Paleolithic dogs became “the Rosetta Stone, for lack of a better term, that then unlocked all of the stuff that we already had in our database,” said Lachie Scarsbrook, a paleogeneticist at the University of Oxford and an author of one of the studies.

That database had three other ancient canines, their species unknown. The genetic data on these animals was incomplete: Scientists had previously sequenced only the DNA from their mitochondria, representing a small fraction of their total genetic material. (A vast majority of an animal’s DNA is stored in the cell nucleus.)

But the mitochondrial DNA from these

three unknown canines was so similar to the mitochondrial DNA from the British and Turkish dogs that the scientists concluded that these animals were probably Paleolithic dogs, too. They were 14,000 to 14,300 years old and came from sites in Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

In the second paper, scientists used a different approach to extract and analyze DNA from more than 200 ancient canine remains, including samples from the same site in Switzerland. They analyzed nuclear DNA from the same canine that the first team had identified as being a Paleolithic dog and reached the same conclusion.

Paleolithic pups

Overall, the researchers found evidence of genetically similar Paleolithic dogs at five archaeological sites that were associated with people from three hunter-gatherer cultures: the Magdalenian, Anatolian and Epigravettian peoples.

These are “utterly different cultures,” said Ian Barnes, a paleogeneticist at the Natural History Museum in London and an author of one of the studies. “Presumably linguistically different, completely culturally different, ecologically different, with the same animal. So how does that square up? How does that happen?”

One possibility, the researchers pro-

posed, is that dogs spread through Europe as the Epigravettian culture expanded across the continent roughly 16,000 years ago, and Epigravettian people passed dogs along to other hunter-gatherer populations they encountered.

How these dogs slotted into these societies remains unclear. “What these animals were doing for them, or whether they were just following them, this we don’t really know,” said Laurent Frantz, a paleogeneticist at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and an author of both studies. But given the varied human cultures and environments, it’s possible that these genetically similar dogs were performing different jobs in different human populations.

That means that while humans would later turn dogs into highly specialized tools, optimized to pull sleds or wriggle into badger holes, these Paleolithic dogs might have been more like “a Swiss Army knife,” Larson said. “The dogs might be doing different things, but the dogs themselves are all the same color, same height, same genomic ancestry.”

These hunter-gatherer societies did appear to have close relationships with the dogs, the researchers reported. At some sites, for instance, there was evidence that humans had perhaps provided these early dogs with food and, in death, had treated their bodies like human ones.

When the first farmers began to arrive in Europe — migrating from southwestern Asia roughly 9,000 years ago — they brought their own dogs with them. “There was basically a mixing of all the different dogs from both hunter-gatherer groups and farming groups,” said Pontus Skoglund, a paleogeneticist at the Francis Crick Institute in London who was an author of both studies.

Europe’s farmers thus ended up with dogs that still carried a lot of ancestry from the dogs that had once lived alongside the continent’s hunter-gatherers. Modern European dogs can also probably trace much of their ancestry back to those canines, the researchers said.

Still, the biggest questions surrounding the origins of the dog remain unanswered.

“It’s very exciting that we have this first view of Paleolithic, really early dog ancestry,” Skoglund said.

“But the question of where dogs come from, and who were these people that domesticated them or started to build this bond,” he added, “we’re still trying to find out.”

Demandante V. COOPERATIVA DE AHORRO Y CREDITO MANATÍ; JOHN DOE & RICHARD ROE

Demandados

Ponce forces 7th match in LVSF B semifinals

Leonas & Criollas in a win-or-gohome duel on Wednesday

Semifinal Series B of the Women’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSF by its initials in Spanish) will feature a seventh and decisive match this Wednesday, after the Leonas of Ponce successfully defended their home court -- Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium -- for the third consecutive time by defeating the Criollas of Caguas in straight sets on Sunday night.

The match was contested with the intensity of a championship final, with all three sets decided in extra points in favor of the Leonas: 26-24, 29-27 and 28-26.

Ponce came from behind in every single set. In the first, Caguas was unable to hold onto leads of 12-5 and later 22-18, despite effective spiking from Alexandra Sczech.

The Leonas responded with a 4-0 run

-- fueled by two attacks from Sherridan Atkinson -- to tie the score at 22. After

trading points until the score reached 2424, Ponce closed out the set with another

spike from Atkinson and a block by Jenselyn Morales against Caguas’ Genesis Collazo.

In the following two sets, the Criollas once again had victory within their grasp -holding identical 24-22 leads -- but failed to close them out. The home team capitalized on every opportunity to seal the win in both sets in extra points.

Ponce’s leading scorers were Atkinson, who tallied 24 points, and Claire Chaussee, who contributed 20.

Jenaisya Moore led the scoring for Caguas with 15 points, followed by Temi Thomas-Ailara with 12, while Sczech and Collazo each contributed 11.

In team statistics, Ponce prevailed in attacks (49-48), aces (3-0), digs (90-83), passes (46-35), and assists (20-6). Caguas led in blocks (13–9).

The winner of Wednesday’s match will advance to play the undefeated Cangrejeras of Santurce in the finals.

Mayagüez hands winless Quebradillas its 11th-straight loss

The Indios of Mayagüez topped the Piratas of Quebradillas, dealing the winless hosts their 11th loss of the season, and the Atléticos of San Germán and Mets of Guaynabo were also winners in Superior National Basketball league games on Sunday night.

At Raymond Dalmau Coliseum in Quebradillas, the Indios defeated the Piratas 114-106 in a high-scoring affair that remained tight much of the way before the visitors created some separation in the second half en route to the win.

A high-pitched first half featured 25 lead changes and the Indios headed into the locker room holding a 59-56 lead. Mayagüez (4-5) took control in the second half, dominating the third quarter and maintaining its advantage down the stretch, ultimately sealing the victory from the free-throw line.

Nathan Sobey led the Indios’ offense with 31 points and 6 assists, followed by Tyrell Harrison with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Sam Waardenburg added 16 points and 8 rebounds.

For Quebradillas, Víctor Liz led all scorers with 36 points, while Jameer Nelson Jr. scored 22 points in his debut, and Emmanuel Mudiay also contributed 22.

At Arquelio Torres Coliseum in San Germán, meanwhile, the Atléticos prevailed 99-89 over the Leones of Ponce.

The first half ended tied at 46, but the Atléticos gained control in the second half, winning the third quarter and outplaying the visitors in the final 10 minutes.

Nick Perkins led the Atléticos (7-3) with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists, followed by André Curbelo with 22 points and 9 assists. Montrezl Harrell added 19 points.

Jezreel de Jesús led Ponce (4-8) with 30 points.

At Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Hato Rey, the Mets defeated the Cangrejeros of Santurce, 94-91.

The Mets got out to a 23-14 first-quarter lead and extended it to double digits for much of the first half for a 51-39 advantage at the intermission.

Guaynabo held a double-digit lead through much of the second half before Santurce managed to narrow the gap in the closing moments. In the end, the Mets executed better from the free-throw line to seal the victory.

Maxwell Abmas had 20 points and 9 assists for Guaynabo (4-6), and Jaysean Paige also scored 20 points. Ysmael Romero contributed a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Devin Williams added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Malik Beasley and Ángel Rodríguez scored 17 points each for the Cangrejeros (4-5), with Rodríguez also tallying 10 assists. Jordan Howard added 14 points in his debut.
