Fernando Sanabria Colón, inspected the construction work on the photovoltaic project known as Marahú. The project was carried out with an investment of $1.2 billion, sourced from federal funds and private capital. Some 743 industrial photovoltaic battery storage units were installed in the Jobos sector, while the Salinas project involved over 757 units, bringing the combined total to 1,500.

wo projects developed by Applied Energy Solutions (AES) Puerto Rico in the municipalities of Guayama and Salinas -- totaling some 200 megawatts (MW) of solar energy -- are poised to come online. Additionally, two industrial backup battery systems -- known as battery energy storage systems -- will store 285 MW. Combined, the two platforms will add some 485 megawatts of energy at a cost of roughly 12 cents per kilowatt-hour. The announcement was made Wednesday by Rep. Víctor Parés Otero, who chairs the Government Committee in the island House of Representatives. “Acting on a directive from our speaker, Carlos ‘Johnny’ Méndez, to monitor energy projects currently under development, we held a conference call today with Jesús Bolinaga, president of AES Puerto Rico. He informed us that the two projects -- a 120-megawatt facility in Salinas and an 80-MW solar farm in the Jobos sector of Guayama -- are ready to come online soon,” Parés said. “These two solar panel systems will add 200 MW of generation capacity.” “Once these systems are operational, combined with the battery units, we will have 485 megawatts of clean, affordable energy,” the lawmaker noted. “The 285 megawatts of stored energy -- providing up to four hours of usage during peak demand -- will help reduce the frequency and, above all, the duration of load-shedding events caused by generation shortfalls. Meanwhile, the 200 megawatts of solar panels will help reduce the load on

uerto Rico Bar Association (CAAPR by its initials in Spanish) President Vivian Godineaux Villaronga expressed concern on Thursday regarding actions and public statements that, in the organization’s view, have limited civic participation, freedom of expression, access to public information, and access to justice. “The Constitution of Puerto Rico clearly establishes that our system of government aims to promote the general welfare and ensure the full enjoyment of human rights,” Godineaux Villaronga said in a written statement. “However, in recent times, we have observed concerning limitations on essential rights …” The CAAPR also highlighted the deployment of police force against individuals demonstrating over issues related to water and electrical services, warning of potential violations of constitutional rights. “The government’s response, involving disproportionate

deployments of police force, raises serious concerns regarding the safety of demonstrators and potential violations of their constitutional rights,” CAAPR Vice President Yanira Reyes said. Godineaux Villaronga also maintained that there are restrictions on the exercise of freedom of the press that must be addressed urgently, and she defended access to public information as an indispensable constitutional right for government oversight. Godineaux Villaronga also asserted that legal professionals must be able to represent their clients without facing pressure linked to the individual’s identity, the nature of the case, or the legal position adopted. “Lawyers are essential to ensuring access to justice,” she said. Representatives from the Overseas Press Club, the Puerto Rico Journalists Association, Ayuda Legal Puerto Rico, the Legal Aid Society, Kilómetro 0, the Legal Aid Union, Amnesty International Puerto Rico, the ACLU of Puerto Rico, and municipal assembly member Daisy Sánchez participated in the conference.

Gasoline prices in PR climb as Mideast conflict tightens global oil supply By THE STAR STAFF

G

asoline and diesel prices in Puerto Rico rose sharply this week as the ongoing conflict involving Iran continues to disrupt global oil markets, pushing crude and refined fuel costs higher worldwide. The increase, already visible at local stations, reflects the island’s exposure to international price shocks driven by geopolitical instability in the Middle East. Luis Guiets, president of the Puerto Rico Gasoline Retailers Association, said Wednesday in a radio interview that petroleum costs have been climbing steadily because of the conflict, and the impact is now evident at the pump. According to the Department of Consumer Affairs (DACO by its acronym in Spanish), regular gasoline is selling for $1.06 to $1.12 per liter, premium for $1.20 to $1.29, and diesel for $1.33 to $1.36. But Guiets warned that diesel prices in particular have surged in recent days. “The product most affected over the past weeks has been diesel. Diesel reached 140 cents in cost,” Guiets said, noting that limited distillate supplies and high refining margins have made the fuel especially vulnerable. He added that stations receiving deliveries on Wednesday were forced to post higher prices: regular gasoline between $1.10 and $1.13 per liter, premium at about $1.29, and diesel jumping to between $1.45 and $1.46. The spike in Puerto Rico mirrors global trends. Since late

February, when the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran escalated, energy markets have been rattled by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which roughly a fifth of the world’s seaborne oil and gas flows. The conflict has constrained oil supplies and triggered sharp increases in crude and refined product prices worldwide. In the United States, gasoline prices rose 24.6% year-over-year in July, according to federal data, largely driven by the same supply shocks affecting Puerto Rico, according to news reports. The Iran conflict has also severely strained global refining capacity, keeping gasoline and diesel prices elevated even as crude benchmarks have fluctuated. European diesel prices have climbed more than 70% since the war began, while U.S. gasoline prices are up 60%, reflecting a widening gap between demand and refineries’ ability to meet it, according to news reports. The International Energy Agency reports that wholesale gasoline and diesel prices remain about 30% higher than before the conflict, even after crude prices eased slightly following a tentative mid‑June agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The surge in refined product prices has been especially pronounced due to the loss of Middle Eastern heavy crude, which yields higher volumes of diesel and jet fuel. In the United States, the war has pushed average pump prices above $4 per gallon for the first time in more than three years, marking the steepest monthly rise in decades. Analysts attribute the increase to Iran’s closure of most shipping through

the Strait of Hormuz, which has driven U.S. oil futures above $100 per barrel. Guiets cautioned that if crude prices continue their upward trajectory, Puerto Rican consumers should brace for additional increases. With global supply still constrained and refined product markets under pressure, the island, which imports all its fuel, remains highly vulnerable to external shocks. “The trend is upward,” Guiets said. “If this continues, consumers will keep seeing higher prices.”

The increase in fuel prices, already visible at local gas stations, reflects Puerto Rico’s exposure to international price shocks driven by geopolitical instability in the Middle East.

House seeks relocation, remedies for stretch of PR‑1 impacted by accelerated coastal erosion By THE STAR STAFF

T

he Puerto Rico House of Representatives has ordered a formal investigation into the growing instability of the PR‑1 corridor between the Las Ochenta community in Salinas and the boundary with Santa Isabel, a stretch of roadway that has become increasingly vulnerable as coastal erosion accelerates across the island. The resolution, introduced by Rep. Fernando Sanabria Colón,

directs the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP by its acronym in Spanish) to examine the structural risks facing the road, propose potential remedies, and evaluate whether the highway should be relocated farther inland to protect residents who depend on it as their only access route. For years, Las Ochenta residents have endured repeated closures of PR-1 due to flooding, structural deterioration, and heavy swells that push Caribbean waters directly onto the asphalt. When the road is impassable, the community is effectively isolated from supermarkets, medical services, gas stations and the town center. The Legislature notes that the corridor’s proximity to the shoreline places it in a zone of high vulnerability, where even moderate storms can compromise mobility and public safety. The situation reflects a broader pattern unfolding along Puerto Rico’s coasts. Recent scientific assessments have documented rapid shoreline retreat, stronger winter swells, and rising sea levels that are reshaping beaches and undermining infrastructure. Roads built decades ago, long before climate adaptation was part of public planning, now sit at the edge of eroding coastlines. In multiple municipalities, erosion has damaged homes, recreational areas, and public utilities, prompting emergency repairs and long-term reconsideration of how coastal infrastructure should be designed. In Salinas, the pressures are especially acute. The PR-1 segment in question was never designed to withstand the frequency and intensity of today’s extreme weather events. As erosion narrows the buffer between land and sea, the risks to drivers and nearby residents continue to grow. The Legislature argues that Puerto Rico can no longer rely on reactive fixes and must instead adopt

Rep. Fernando Sanabria Colón strategies that anticipate future coastal change. The resolution requires DTOP to study a range of options, including reinforcing the existing roadway, relocating it northward to a safer inland location, or creating new access routes that meet modern resilience standards. Any solution must account for environmental impacts, engineering feasibility, and the community’s daily needs. DTOP has 90 days to submit its findings to both legislative chambers. The deadline underscores the urgency of the matter, as each swell season brings new damage and the pace of coastal erosion continues to accelerate. The investigation into PR‑1, the legislation notes, is part of a larger reckoning with the realities of climate change and the challenge of protecting communities whose infrastructure was built at the water’s edge.

Governor launches well-reactivation plan By THE STAR STAFF

T

he Puerto Rico government is moving to expand its drought‑response strategy by restoring water production capacity at the source, even as emergency distribution measures continue across the island. Gov. Jenniffer González Colón has requested authorization to use $9.7 million from the Emergency Reserve to evaluate and rehabilitate five public wells, while the Financial Oversight and Management Board has separately approved a 21‑day extension of emergency funding for ongoing drought‑response activities. In a letter to the oversight board’s executive director, Robert F. Mujica Jr., the governor asked for access to the Emergency Reserve to support rapid evaluations, design work, rehabilitation and potential reactivation of five wells: Dorado Dairy Nos. 1 and 2, Maguayo No. 2, Campanilla No. 8 and Levittown No. 4. The wells, currently inactive, could collectively supply up to five million gallons of potable water per day if deemed safe and compliant by the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA), the Department of Natural and Environmental Re‑ sources (DNER) and the Department of Health. González Colón emphasized that the request is not a blanket authorization for new groundwater extraction or indis‑ criminate pumping. Instead, she described it as a controlled emergency measure aimed at recovering previously existing production capacity while Puerto Rico remains under an island‑ wide water emergency declared July 31 under Executive Order OE‑2026‑035. The order cited significantly reduced rainfall and

declining reservoir levels, directing agencies to prioritize mit‑ igation efforts and identify available state and federal funding. To support the well‑reactivation plan, the governor also signed Executive Order 2026‑044, amending the original emergency declaration to incorporate additional infrastructure measures. The order authorizes PRASA, the DNER and the Puerto Rico Infrastructure Financing Authority to undertake all neces‑ sary contracting, procurement and technical work to expand, recover or diversify potable water availability. Measures may include rehabilitation of existing wells, development of new wells, installation of filtration systems, auxiliary pumping at reservoirs, replacement of motors and electrical systems, instal‑ lation of temporary or permanent pipelines, and establishment of interconnections between systems. The governor’s request comes as the oversight board confirmed recently that it extended access to the Emergency Reserve for drought‑response activities for an additional 21 days, through Sept. 10, 2026. The extension was granted in an Aug. 26 letter to Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Executive Director Orlando Rivera Berríos. According to the board, during the initial 15‑day au‑ thorization period, agencies reported $7.5 million in eligible expenditures, with $18.7 million pending review and additional costs still being finalized through procurement processes. The extension allows OMB and agencies to complete eligibility evaluations, obtain quotations and validate documentation without interrupting emergency operations. The oversight board’s authorization -- capped at $18.73

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón (Facebook via Jenniffer González Colón) million -- covers measures outlined in Executive Order OE‑2026‑036, including potable water distribution via tanker trucks, mobile purification systems, temporary distribution cen‑ ters and related logistics needed to preserve essential services and protect public health. The board reiterated that the Emergency Reserve is intended for extraordinary events beyond the government’s immediate budget capacity, particularly when federal disaster assistance is unavailable or delayed. No disbursements will be allowed after Sept. 10 unless the government requests and receives an additional extension. As drought conditions persist, the government said its dual strategy -- maintaining emergency distribution while restoring production capacity -- aims to stabilize Puerto Rico’s potable water supply and strengthen long‑term resiliency.

USDA expands drought disaster declaration to 38 municipalities By THE STAR STAFF

T

he U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has expand‑ ed the drought disaster declaration in Puerto Rico, des‑ ignating Barranquitas, Caguas and Guayama as primary areas and another 16 municipalities as contiguous areas, Gov. Jenniffer González Colón announced on Wednesday. With the new determination and a declaration an‑ nounced on Aug. 26, a total of 38 distinct municipalities are now covered by federal drought-related designations. “We have just received notification that the federal De‑ partment of Agriculture has approved an additional drought disaster declaration for Puerto Rico, designating three primary municipalities and 16 contiguous municipalities,” González Colón said in a written statement. “This action represents critical additional support for our farmers and producers affected by the conditions our island continues to face.” In addition to Barranquitas, Caguas and Guayama as primary areas, the new declaration includes the following as contiguous municipalities: Aguas Buenas, Aibonito, Arroyo, Cayey, Cidra, Coamo, Comerío, Corozal, Gurabo, Naranjito, Orocovis, Patillas, Salinas, San Juan, San Lorenzo and Trujillo Alto. Eligible agricultural producers in the designated areas

may be considered for emergency loans and other assistance tools from the Farm Service Agency, subject to federal re‑ quirements. The designation also allows eligible small businesses and non-profit organizations in the included municipalities to apply for U.S. Small Business Administration economic

injury disaster loans, aimed at entities facing economic hardship due to the drought. A previous declaration had designated the following as primary areas: Cabo Rojo, Coamo, Guánica, Guayanilla, Juana Díaz, Lajas, Peñuelas, Ponce, Sabana Grande, Salinas, San Germán, Santa Isabel and Yauco. Adjuntas, Aibonito, Barranquitas, Cayey, Guayama, Hormigueros, Jayuya, Lares, Maricao, Mayagüez, Orocovis, Utuado and Villalba were previously included as contiguous municipalities. Some of these municipalities appear again under the new designation. According to La Fortaleza, the latest decision is based on conditions identified by the U.S. Drought Monitor in areas that met the federal criteria for intensity and duration required to trigger the assistance mechanism. “Since the onset of this emergency, we have worked to ensure that Puerto Rico has access to all tools and resources available from the federal government,” the governor stated. “This new declaration demonstrates that we are continuing to move in that direction and will keep identifying every opportunity for assistance to support our farmers and protect our productive capacity.” Efforts related to the request were carried out in conjunc‑ tion with the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration and in coordination with the island Department of Agriculture.

Hegseth targets 7 more officers as his frustrated Army secretary quits By GREG JAFFE, HELENE COOPER and ERIC SCHMITT

D

efense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired or blocked the promotions of more than 80 generals and admirals, a purge that has hit about 10% of the military’s top officers and shows no signs of slowing. In recent days, Hegseth targeted seven Army officers who had been selected for twostar general rank by a board made up of senior Army leaders, according to current and former military officials, who discussed sensitive personnel matters on the condition of anonymity. The moves come at a time when the military is badly strained by the Iran war, which has gone on far longer than administration officials anticipated. The military, especially the Army, is also racing to keep up with the proliferation of sophisticated drones and precision missiles that have exposed the vulnerability of its overseas bases and weapons systems. The firings and Hegseth’s refusal to explain the logic behind them are dividing the Pentagon and alienating many in Congress, the officials said. The latest to register his disapproval was Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll, who recently submitted his resignation to President Donald Trump. In a meeting with the president, Driscoll complained that Hegseth had fired some of the Army’s most combat-tested leaders, imperiling its efforts to modernize the force, military officials said. He also warned Trump that the firings and blocked promotions have damaged morale, causing some in the military to question the fairness of a promotion system that is supposed to be apolitical and merit-based, senior officials said. Hegseth’s purge does not appear to be driven by job performance, but rather is part of a broader effort by the defense secretary to fashion a force, particularly at senior levels,

(Doug Mills/The New York Times)

that is aligned with his political and ideological views, according to military officials. Some senior administration officials, concerned about the leadership vacuum at the top of the Army, had pressed Driscoll to stay, officials said. Those concerns have spread to Congress; Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., said he was “disappointed” to see Driscoll go. “I’m hearing the same rumors as everybody else — that he was frustrated with some of his top generals being released, and that’s not the first time I’ve heard that,” Rounds said. “I think that points to questions that we’re going to be asking when we get back.” Sean Parnell, the Pentagon spokesperson, defended Hegseth’s decisions as normal Pentagon business. “The idea that these lists cannot be altered is ridiculous; every single secretary has exercised this exact prerogative,” he said. But senior officials and members of Congress have said that Hegseth’s moves are without precedent. In the past, the defense secretary and service secretaries have removed officers for moral or ethical breaches. But officials said that these officers have behaved in accordance with Pentagon policy. Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, has called Hegseth’s removals “illegal.” More than half of the officers affected

by Hegseth’s dismissals are Black or female in a force whose senior ranks are dominated by white male officers. Of the seven officers Hegseth removed from the Army two-star promotion list, two are Black and two are female. Last fall, Hegseth laid out his vision for the firings in a speech that he required all of the military’s generals and admirals to attend. “We are clearing out the debris, removing the distractions, clearing the way for leaders to be leaders,” Hegseth said. “You might say we’re ending the war on warriors.” That vision and the widespread firings that accompanied it increasingly conflicted with Driscoll’s efforts to lead the Army, officials said. Driscoll sought to defend the integrity of the Army’s promotion system and advance the modernization vision that he and Gen. Randy George, the Army chief of staff, had built. Hegseth fired George in April without explanation. Driscoll, a Yale Law School classmate and close friend of Vice President JD Vance, had valuable connections in the White House. He had also won the trust of the Army’s senior officers and many in Congress. But those relationships were of little help as Hegseth has consolidated his control over the Pentagon, largely by firing senior officers and replacing them with leaders he viewed as

more loyal. The purges have hit the Army most heavily. Hegseth has forced out at least three senior officers who had been viewed as potential successors to George. Hegseth’s choice for Army chief of staff, Gen. Christopher LaNeve, does not appear to have the votes needed to be confirmed by the Senate. Hegseth came into the job complaining that there were too many generals in the military. In May last year, he ordered a 20% reduction of four-star officers. “A critical step in the process is removing redundant force structure to optimize and streamline leadership by reducing excess general and flag officer positions,” he said. But his moves to fire officers and block promotions do not seem to be motivated by a desire to limit redundancies or improve lethality of the force. One senior Army officer removed from the Army’s one-star promotion list recently had commanded the Army 173rd Airborne brigade in Italy and was described by officers as one of the best combat leaders in the infantry. He had led troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and earned two master’s degrees from Columbia University. The officer was pulled from the promotion list because officials in Hegseth’s office erroneously believed he had allowed a mentorship group for female paratroopers to exist in his unit and conduct an all-women’s airborne jump, Army officials said. In fact, the group predated his command. The military has long prided itself of being one of the country’s most integrated institutions. More than 40% of the active duty military and its reserve components are people of color. But the people making crucial decisions about how and when those troops are deployed to combat are almost entirely white and male. As a result of Hegseth’s moves, the military’s top ranks will be even whiter and more male for years to come. This year marks the lowest percentage of women nominated to general and admiral rank in at least 25 years, according to a New York Times analysis. No women are likely to be nominated to admiral rank this year, for the first time in more than a decade. Hegseth has cast his firings as a cleansing of less-qualified Black and female candidates. “This administration has done a great deal from Day 1 to remove the social justice, politically correct and toxic ideological garbage that had infected our department,” he said in his speech to the force last fall.

Six takeaways from the Massachusetts primaries By REID J. EPSTEIN

M

assachusetts, as it turns out, is a good state in which to be a very old Democratic incumbent. Three Democrats who have been in office since long before the iPhone was in stores all won renomination Tuesday. Sen. Ed Markey, 80, and Reps. Richard Neal, 77, and Stephen F. Lynch, 71, are all likely to return for additional terms. Each faced challengers who had called for a new generation of leadership. Markey coasted past Rep. Seth Moulton, 47, who ran to the middle, while Neal and Lynch both fought off progressive challengers. Markey has been in office for 50 years. Neal has represented western Massachusetts since 1989. Lynch first won election from South Boston in 2001. The state’s Democrats do not seem inclined to reject their incumbents. Here are six takeaways from the Massachusetts primary results: Voters didn’t care about Markey’s age. The party still scarred by former President Joe Biden’s public meltdown during the 2024 campaign was not convinced that an octogenarian senator should not serve another six years. Perhaps if Markey, 80, had faced a younger challenger with better political relationships than Moulton, he would have been in trouble in Tuesday’s Democratic primary. But Moulton has spent his career challenging his party’s orthodoxy and its leaders. That record left Markey the political space he needed to paint himself as the progressive in the race, campaigning on the ideas of the future — even though he has been in Congress for 50 years. In the waning days of the Massachusetts primary, several Democrats described Moulton as having the generational change message the party needed but being the wrong messenger to deliver it. Markey said throughout the campaign that he would resign his seat if his advanced age left him unable to properly fulfill his Senate duties. He is now favored to win in November, which would have him serve in the Senate until he is 86 years old. Moulton’s trans remarks weren’t forgotten. If Massachusetts were a general election battleground state, perhaps Moulton’s skepticism about trans athletes’ participation in youth sports might have played better among primary voters. But from the moment Moulton entered the race last October, Markey used his remarks questioning transgender girls’ participation in girls’ sports as a battering ram against him. Not

only did it galvanize the LGBTQ vote for Markey, it also helped frame him as the progressive candidate. It was the same formula that powered Markey’s last primary triumph in 2020 against another younger, more moderate Democrat, Joe Kennedy III. Moulton eventually offered a qualified apology for his remarks, which came the day after President Donald Trump won a second term in the 2024 election. But by then the state’s progressive voters had heard for months from Markey and his supporters that Moulton, during tough times, was willing to toss trans people aside. Dan Koh wins, thanks to Biden and Harris. A lot of Democrats rolled their eyes when Dan Koh rolled out endorsement videos from Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris. Koh, who was a White House aide for Biden, was running against Tram Nguyen, a progressive state legislator, for Moulton’s House seat north of Boston. Tying one’s political identity to a presidential administration a lot of Democrats would like to move past was a unique strategy. No other Democrat in a competitive primary this year had video testimonials from both Biden and Harris. (He also had a lot of help from a pro-AI super political action committee.) The strategy worked. Koh won a relatively easy victory over Nguyen and four other candidates. In a heavily Democratic district, he is all but certain to enter Congress in January as a legacy of the Biden administration.

Stephen Lynch and Richie Neal hang on Markey was not the only old guy to hang on Tuesday. Neal and Lynch both fended off younger challengers for their House seats. Unlike Markey, Neal and Lynch both faced progressive upstarts. And while both won by margins closer than they have achieved in previous races, they are both likely to return to Congress for another two years. Massachusetts has not elected a Republican to any of its congressional seats since 1994. As long as that remains the case — and it is widely expected to — five of the nine members of the Massachusetts House delegation next year will be 63 or older. Both senators will be 77 or older. And efforts by young challengers to oust the state’s older incumbents have failed time after time. The pollsters got one right. The polling industry has gotten a lot of grief lately after Democratic primary results were way off from the forecasts of the final surveys in Michigan and Wisconsin, followed by a big upset in the Florida Senate race. In Massachusetts, Big Polling got it right. Emerson College and the University of New Hampshire released polls in the final week before the primary showing Markey as getting more than 60% of the vote — blowout numbers. They turned out to be right on target. Getting the numbers right is something of a triumph for pollsters as they head into the final general election sprint in election battlegrounds. Ambitious Democrats are already looking toward 2030 and ’32. The next two Massachusetts Senate

Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) speaks at a groundbreaking ceremony at GreenTech Park in Worcester, Mass., Aug. 13, 2026. (Mel Musto/The New York Times)

contests could feature a pileup of ambitious Democrats from competing wings of the party. The state’s Senate races in 2030, when Sen. Elizabeth Warren, now 77, would face reelection, and 2032, when Markey’s next term would end, are likely to be open-seat contests. Markey said in July that the term he was running for now would be his last. Warren would be 81 in 2030. Massachusetts has no shortage of Democrats who have been eyeing upcoming Senate openings. Reps. Ayanna Pressley and Jake Auchincloss have barely disguised their interest in the seats. Mayor Michelle Wu of Boston is a popular progressive. Marty Walsh, the former Boston mayor who served as Biden’s labor secretary, could also mount a run.

But my childhood (and millions of others) would have been poorer without Willy Wonka and Matilda Wormwood. Pablo Picasso was monstrous in his treatment of women. He was wondrous in his depiction of them. Eldridge Cleaver was an admitted and convicted rapist. Yet “Soul on Ice” is one of the most interesting books of its time. Then there’s the case of John Galliano, the British fashion designer, and the self-inflicted fiasco that has befallen New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. On Monday, Galliano withdrew under pressure from a planned nine-month retrospective of his work at the museum, to be kicked off next May with the Met’s lavish, lucrative, star-studded annual gala. Galliano, by broad consensus, is a master of his craft whose creative gifts enshrined Givenchy, Dior and Maison Margiela as international fashion powerhouses. He is also, by many accounts, a wretch. “From his early days as a struggling designer in London and Paris through his time at the heights of the fashion industry, Mr. Galliano was known to be verbally abusive to employees, friends and strangers alike,” wrote Dana Thomas, his biographer, in a guest essay in The New York Times. In 2011 a French court convicted him of a pair of hate crimes for antisemitic and anti-Asian tirades at a Paris bar. He apologized for the behavior, claiming he had been high and drunk. But these were not isolated events. A video of a separate incident from 2010 captured him telling patrons of the same bar, “I love Hitler,” adding, “Your mothers, your forefathers would be fucking gassed.” In 2019, according to fashion publicist Lauren London, Galliano “started screaming ‘Merry Christ-

mas. Merry Christmas’” when he overheard a woman speaking Hebrew at an alcohol-free Italian spa. “When my friend asked him if he had a problem with Hebrew he promptly and very unapologetically responded that he did.” London’s friend and her daughter have confirmed the incident; a spokesperson for Galliano says he denies it. Galliano’s troubled history was a secret to nobody when the museum decided to honor him, thanks largely to the tireless championship of Anna Wintour, the global editorial director of Vogue and a longtime trustee of the Met. It was a reminder that high fashion and good judgment only rarely coincide. For starters, the date of the gala coincided with Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. Whoops. Then the museum thought it could mollify the Jewish community by arranging meetings between Galliano and prominent rabbis so they could offer their benediction. But it seems not to have reckoned with Julie Menin, the speaker of New York’s City Council, who denounced the tribute to Galliano as “wholly inappropriate” and a “serious mistake” at a time of steeply rising anti-Jewish hate crimes in the city. The city helps fund the Met to the tune of millions of dollars a year. There was also the palaver from Andrew Bolton, the curator of the Met’s Costume Institute. Bolton promised that the planned show would open with an “orientation gallery” on Galliano’s transgressions that could “provide context” for visitors. It was a touch of self-important backside covering for a show whose overriding, if unwritten, political message would have been that Jew hatred, unlike most other forms of bigotry, is a survivable mistake in elite Western culture today. As Elisha Wiesel said last week, “If someone had screamed the worst racial epithet you can imagine, said, ‘You’re a horrible Black person, and your ancestors would have been hung from a tree,’ you could not imagine them being honored by a prominent cultural institution.” The good news is that that message will not be sent, at least not this time. The bad news is that the central lesson of this episode remains unlearned. The error of the Galliano retrospective was not the desire to display his outstanding body of work for the public. A dress, assuming it doesn’t have a swastika stitched to it, doesn’t convey a prejudice, and curious visitors, including Jewish ones, could learn a lot from an excellent exhibition. The outrage was the highly personalized form of the honor being bestowed on Galliano himself, above all through the Met Gala, which violated the principle of separation by celebrating the execrable creator along with his extraordinary creations. By the same token, efforts to explicate Galliano’s conduct, examine his sincerity or extract another apology from him should not be in the museum’s remit. The function of art museums is to display great art, period. It’s not to serve as moral inquisitor, contextualizer or apologist. The same attitude should apply to every other supposedly problematic artist, whether it’s Edgar Degas or Paul Gauguin or Chuck Close or

(Ryan Murphy/The New York Times) Kehinde Wiley. The smart play for the Met would have been to cancel the gala and go ahead with the retrospective — and to have used that decision as a template for every future political controversy. Instead, Wintour, in her capacity as a Met trustee, praised Galliano for being “very courageous” after he withdrew and offered him her “full support.” That she cannot seem to separate the man from his work might prompt the rest of the museum’s leadership to ask whether she hasn’t done damage enough already. Perhaps there’s another fashionista the Met could have canceled.

‘Exorcist II’ bombed in 1977. Its director still feels the sting. By ROBERT ITO

J

ohn Boorman, the celebrated director of “Deliverance” and “Hope and Glory,” is one of David Kittredge’s favorite filmmakers. But when Kittredge, a Los Angeles director and writer, got the idea for a documentary about his hero, he didn’t want to focus on either of those Oscar-nominated movies or on the times Boorman won best director at Cannes. No, Kittredge wanted to look at Boorman’s “Exorcist II: The Heretic.” When that big-budget sequel was released in 1977, it was lambasted as one of the worst movies in recent memory, if not all time. The thing was, Kittredge actually liked the movie. And he wanted Boorman, decades after the film drove fans to pelt theater screens with garbage, to talk with him about it, on camera. “That was a bit of a courtship,” Kittredge admitted. In the end, Boorman relented, baring his soul and still remarkable memory. “It was the first time I’d really talked about a very hard period of my life,” Boorman, now 93, said by email from his London home. Filming on a single day in 2018, the British director recalled what it was like following up the first “Exorcist,” a 1973 blockbuster, and how the critical reception for his own film nearly drove him from the industry. The result is “Boorman and the Devil,” which opened Friday. Filled with scenes from “Exorcist II” and animated re-creations from that film’s seemingly cursed past, this documentary is remarkable not just because it reunites so many members of the original cast and crew, including a very introspective Boorman. It also invites viewers to reassess this controversial work — a critical reexamination that has been going on since the film’s infamous premiere five decades ago. “Exorcist II” opens with Regan, Linda Blair’s character, four years after her demonic possession and the other events of the first “Exorcist.” A psychiatrist (Louise Fletcher) and a priest (Richard Burton) try to uncover Regan’s hidden memories of the ordeal via a contraption called a “synchronizer.” Despite its huge budget ($14 million, a record for Warner Bros. at the time) and star-filled cast, the production was troubled nearly from the start. Burton, a notorious alcoholic, came to set drunk; the production was shut down for five weeks after Boorman contracted Valley fever, a fungal infection, while shooting scenes filled with sand, dust and thousands of locusts on a Burbank, California, soundstage transformed to look like an African village. “A lot of things went wrong in a lot of very strange ways,” Kittredge said. Many stories come straight from the mouths of the folks who were there as the whole thing unraveled. Blair is here, talking about why she really didn’t want to do

“Exorcist II: The Heretic” (1977) (Warner Bros.) the film but ultimately relented (because of the script and the understanding that the film was going to be done on “my terms”). Fletcher is here, too, blaming the multitude of problems on, yes, the Devil. Kittredge also lured back many of the crew members, including script supervisor Bonnie Prendergast and second assistant director Victor Hsu. They “shot this movie 50 years ago and have hundreds of credits between them, and yet they remember this movie like it was last Thursday,” Kittredge said. “It was a hugely formative movie.” Unlike the original, which was famously terrifying (stories of moviegoers becoming physically ill made the news), the sequel was weirdly, infuriatingly not. “I love the film,” critic Jim Hemphill said. “But it’s not a horror movie.” Viewers walked out of theaters and demanded their money back; New York Times critic Vincent Canby panned the film, citing its “spectacular fatuousness.” At a sneak preview in Pasadena, California, angry viewers spotted studio heads in the back of the theater and chased them onto the street. “Audiences who wanted to be scared, who expected to be scared, ended up laughing at the screen,” Kittredge said. “They were absolutely furious.” Boorman admitted, “The release was obviously disappointing,” but added, “I worked with an amazing cast and crew, and they didn’t deserve the reaction the film received.” For Mike Flanagan, who directed “The Exorcist: Martyrs” (due next year), the seventh film in the franchise, the problem was that Boorman never set out to make a horror movie in the first place. He “wasn’t trying to scare people,” Flanagan said. “He was more interested in themes of technology and faith and superstition, and his lack of interest in the horror elements come across clearly.” Like Kittredge, Flanagan is a big fan of the sequel — as much for its backstory as for what appears onscreen. “It was this incredible mix of ambition and miscalculation, and it just didn’t work as a movie, but you couldn’t

look away,” he said. Over the years, the film has garnered second approving looks from a variety of Boorman fans, including New Yorker critic Pauline Kael, who praised its “swirling, hallucinogenic, apocalyptic quality” and “visionary crazy grandeur”; Martin Scorsese declared that it surpassed the original. There are certainly things to love. Shot by William Fraker, the Oscar-nominated cinematographer of “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” and “Heaven Can Wait,” the film includes trippy images of the good Regan meeting up with the demonically possessed one and pre-computergenerated imagery scenes of locust swarms in Africa created using thousands of the insects. “It is inarguably one of the best photographed movies ever made,” Hemphill said. Even the odd moments — Blair tap dancing, James Earl Jones in a locust costume — have their unique charm. “There’s stuff in it that’s incredible,” Kittredge said. “And wouldn’t you rather have a movie that swings for the fences and fails, rather than one that doesn’t try much and is just fine?” Perhaps not so surprisingly, Kittredge’s movie has gotten far better reviews than the one it dissects. Much of that, the director said, is thanks to his subject. “Boorman is one of our greatest filmmakers, and to have him talk as candidly as he did, not just about this film that changed the way he looked at films and nearly killed him, but also about his life and his approach to art, is so important to anyone who loves cinema.” Flanagan agreed. “It’s amazing to look out at the minefield and see Boorman there, very generously showing off all of the body parts he’s left behind as he was blown to hell walking through that very same field,” he said. “He speaks so eloquently about why he did the things he did and how he came out of that experience,” Flanagan continued. “I think it’s one of the most interesting windows into a filmmaker’s process that I can remember seeing.”

Attacks in Black Sea threaten to strangle global grain supply By CARLOTTA GALL and KAMILA HRABCHUK

I

t was a bumper harvest this year and barns in southern Ukraine are filled with great golden mounds of grain. Yet farmers in Ukraine’s prime agricultural belt say they are facing ruin, and experts warn the world may be staring at another global food shock as Russia and Ukraine, both major exporters of grain, intensify attacks on ports and shipping in the Black Sea. “We don’t know how we will survive,” said Viktor Zvirishyn, 57, a farmer who lives in a village in the southern region of Mykolaiv. “There’s almost nowhere to store it,” he added. Because the grain cannot get out through Ukrainian ports and Black Sea shipping routes have become increasingly precarious, no one wants to buy the grain, he said, and prices have plummeted. Zvirishyn was already living on the edge. His house and farm were destroyed under Russian occupation at the beginning of Moscow’s invasion in 2022, and he is only just rebuilding and returning to farming. The invasion displaced thousands of farmers and disrupted grain exports via the Black Sea, causing a global food shock in 2022. Ukraine managed to recover partially from that, regaining some lost territory and negotiating a Black Sea grain deal with Russia, via mediation by Turkey and the United Nations, that allowed exports to resume and farmers to start over. But this year, Russia began attacks on Ukraine’s last functioning ports and shipping in the Black Sea, again closing down the main export route for Ukrainian grain. Moscow has also extended drone attacks on crops, equipment and farm buildings in frontline areas. Ukraine extended its own attacks to include port facilities in southern Russia, and Kyiv has hit at least five Russian tankers carrying grain in August, according to Lloyd’s List, a London-based maritime journal. The result is that grain exports from both Russia and Ukraine have been drastically reduced. Ukraine exported only 500,000 metric tons of grain from Aug. 1 to Aug. 18. That is just 20% of normal levels when the ports are fully functional, Taras Vysotskyi, Ukraine’s minister of agriculture, said in a recent briefing.

Russia’s grain exports were at 1.4 million metric tons from Aug. 1 to Aug. 20, less than half what they were for the same period a year earlier and the lowest in 10 years, according to a bulletin from the Russian Grain Union, a trade group. Both countries are seeking other export routes. Ukraine is using road and rail, and shipping terminals on the Danube River, but Russia has also started attacking parts of those networks. The Danube already has limited capacity this year because of drought and can handle only smaller volumes. The effect of the blockage is hurting Ukraine’s farmers most of all, said Vicki Aken, country director in Ukraine for the U.S. nonprofit Mercy Corps, which works to help farmers like Zvirishyn. If farmers cannot export their grain, they will probably lose the harvest for lack of storage, Aken said. In a statement last week, she issued an urgent call for a new grain deal, though there is no sign of any talks. “Ukraine’s farmers have risked their lives for this harvest,” Aken said. “They should not now have their grain stranded — or their livelihoods collapse — because the world has failed to keep a safe route to market open.” Zvirishyn has rebuilt one room of his house to live in, using bricks scarred by shrapnel from the ruins. He has had to store his grain in a local silo, and the rest is piled in the open under tarpaulins. He had paid off his debts, he said, but had no money for fuel for his tractor to prepare the land for the new sowing season. “I am almost out of money now,” he said. “I don’t know how I will continue.” Nearby in the same village, Roman Pradun, 35, limped on a crutch through his barn and bent to lift a handful of grain from a mound of harvested wheat, displaying its quality. He said he had bills to pay but would be selling at a loss at current prices. He was lucky to have storage for his grain, he added, because he recently rebuilt his barn with the help of an international charity. But Russian drone attacks had been targeting farm buildings and were encroaching ever closer, he said.

Farming equipment and buildings heavily damaged by Russian strikes and previous occupation in Ukraine’s southern region of Mykolvaiv, on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026. Strikes by both Moscow and Kyiv on shipping in the Black Sea leave farmers facing ruin and could cause another worldwide food shock. (Jedrzej Nowicki/The New York Times) Pradun said that he ran out of his cottage during a drone attack one night this summer, anxious to prevent his crops or barn from catching fire, when shrapnel from a downed drone sliced his knee. His father, Volodymyr Pradun, 66, lives in the nearby city of Mykolaiv because he has not been able to rebuild his own home in the village. “Thank God he is alive, that is the most important,” the elder Pradun said of his son. “But everyday as I drive here I look to see if the barn is still OK.” Despite the difficulties, neither said they were ready to give up. “It’s farming,” the elder man said. “You cannot just stop.”

Trump returns to a familiar playbook as the war with Iran flares up again By ERICA L. GREEN

A

s the on-again, off-again war in Iran flares up again, President Donald Trump seems bogged down in a conflict that he cannot control or move past, despite his declarations of total victory. On Tuesday night, after the latest exchange of fire over control of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump called on the Iranian people to rise up — something he did at the outset of the war six months ago, before he backed off and acknowledged that his command was easier said than done. In a social media post, Trump also

brushed off the stalled negotiations with Iran. “I couldn’t care less if they sign a worthless, to them, agreement,” he wrote Tuesday night, hours after the United States carried out a fresh wave of attacks and Iran hit back. “I like our position now much better, with almost total control of the Hormuz Strait, and their economy totally collapsing,” Trump continued. “They are just playing out the inevitable. When are the Iranian people going to rise up and fight?” But despite Trump’s combative words, Iran is making clear that it has leverage, as well. Six months into the conflict — which

Trump had predicted would be over in a matter of weeks — there is no real end in sight. Iran has fired on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, severely curbing the ability of U.S. allies to export oil and gas. Trump is also feeling the political price at home, in terms of the toll on the U.S. economy and his party’s chances in the midterm elections. He is reluctant to resume an all-out bombardment, even though he issues regular threats, including one Tuesday night announcing that the United States was hitting Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz. “If the failed Nation of Iran retaliates for

this very justified attack,” he wrote, “they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level, but it will not be the biggest attack of them all, that is waiting in the wings and, when it is over, there will be very little left of the Islamic Republic of Iran!” Trump has tried to squeeze Iran economically by enforcing a naval blockade on Iranian ports and increasing sanctions on the country. But China remains a lifeline for Iran, buying its oil and supplying it with raw materials and technology that support its economy and military. And the United States has shown little appetite for opening another economic front with China.

Canada’s leader tells Trump officials to ‘stop doing memes, stop throwing shade’ By IAN AUSTEN

A

week before Canada is set to impose retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion worth of U.S. imports, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday that the Trump administration must stop insulting his country if there was to be any hope of renewing trade talks. Carney, speaking to reporters in Ottawa, welcomed a trio of special election victories by candidates from his Liberal Party a day earlier — the same day that several Trump administration officials took aim at Canada. On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed Canada’s capacity to push back against U.S. tariffs and rejected Carney’s assertion that the two countries are “at war.” Later, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth disparaged a photograph of two female Canadian military cadets in a social media post. Carney said that posts like Hesgeth’s from members of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet were “beneath their office” and that they were blocking renewed trade talks. “When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade, stop trying to be tough, and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussions,” he said. “It’s not constructive, but that’s their democracy.” Liberal Party candidates took more than half the votes to win special elections in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia on Monday night, healthy margins in Canada’s multiparty political system. The Ontario and British Columbia seats were already held by Liberals, and most analysts had expected the party to retain them. The Quebec seat, however, was held by a Conservative, and the race was a three-way contest with the Bloc Québécois, a federal party that promotes Quebec’s separation. The Conservatives finished third. Carney credited the election results to his government’s response to Trump’s trade war. “What’s a clear message from last night in three very different ridings across this great diverse country is that

Prime Minister Mark Carney speaks in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, May 5, 2026. A week before Canada is set to impose retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion worth of American imports, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, that the Trump administration must stop insulting his country if there was to be any hope of renewing trade talks. (Ian Austen/The New York Times) Canadians are behind the plan of the government, which is first and foremost about building strong at home, diversifying with reliable partners, building Canada strong for all,” he said. Several polls released since Carney allowed trade talks with the Trump administration to collapse on Aug. 21 show that Canadians support both that decision as well as his plan to impose counter-tariffs on U.S. products. Polling analysts and political scientists typically caution against reading national sentiment into the results of by-elections, as they are known in Canada, which often turn on local issues. But several said that Monday’s results were an exception. “These by-elections, which outside of these extraor-

dinary moments could have become localized, I think were very nationalized in terms of what these voters were thinking about,” said David Coletto, CEO of Abacus Data, an Ottawa polling firm. “It was about dealing with the Trump administration.” After walking away from negotiations, Carney announced that Canada would impose tariffs on hundreds of U.S. products at rates of 15%, 25% and 50%. An Ipsos Canada poll found that 73% of respondents backed Carney’s decision to match U.S. tariffs “dollar for dollar” as of Sept. 8, a margin of support rarely seen in Canadian political polls. But Carney’s confrontational approach carries risks. Most economists agree that Canada’s economy is too small for its tariffs to meaningfully affect the United States, and it is far from clear that they will influence Trump at all — except, perhaps, to invite further retaliation. After Carney vowed to strike back, Trump threatened to double tariffs on Canadian-made automobiles to 50%, beginning in January, and to extend tariffs to auto parts currently exempted under North American content rules. Canadian shoppers will gradually see price increases as a result of Canada’s own tariffs, while exporters reliant on the U.S. market face mounting losses from U.S. levies. As part of Carney’s effort to reduce Canada’s economic dependence on the United States, he will address the European Parliament later this month. Last week, Trump called Canadian officials “nasty” when he signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” prompting disgust and eye rolls from Canadians. Coletto said that if conditions worsen, Canadians might increasingly be willing to abandon the relationship with the United States altogether. “I’m not convinced that most people think a resolution with the U.S. would be better for us than something of a sharper break, even if it’s unrealistic or irrational for us to think that’s a good outcome,” he said.

Ad firm set to earn $5 million in 2 months under fiscal board-approved Treasury contract By THE STAR STAFF

T

he advertising agency Veintinueve de Febrero Inc. is poi‑ sed to earn more than $5 million in just 90 days under a revised contract the Financial Oversight and Manage‑ ment Board for Puerto Rico approved earlier this week — but only after imposing strict conditions tied to procurement trans‑ parency and fiscal compliance. In a letter sent electronically to Treasury Secretary Án‑ gel Pantoja Rodríguez on Monday, the oversight board con‑ firmed that the Treasury Department’s proposed renewal for advertising and marketing services — covering the Electronic Lottery, the Traditional Lottery, and broader agency communi‑ cations — meets the requirements of Section 204(b)(2) of the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA). The board’s approval, however, is explicitly “Approved with Conditions.” The revised contract, submitted Aug. 17, shortens the original one‑year proposal to a two‑month term running from

Sept. 1 through Nov. 30 of this year. The Treasury Department reduced the maximum payable amount accordingly, landing at $5,074,000, all of which will be funded through a mix of Ge‑ neral and Special Revenue Funds already budgeted for fiscal year (FY) 2027. The oversight board forced the shortened term after raising concerns earlier this month about irregularities in the procurement process that produced the prior contract, Con‑ tract 2026‑000178. In its Aug. 7 letter, the board questioned amendments the Treasury Department made to its internal procurement manual on the same day the request for qualifica‑ tions was issued, as well as the secretary’s decision to bypass the Evaluation Committee’s recommendation and award the contract to a lower‑scoring bidder — Veintinueve de Febrero Inc. The agency provided no documentation explaining that decision. Those issues prompted the oversight board to require a new competitive procurement process, one that must be con‑ ducted “well in advance” of the 90‑day term and in accor‑

dance with the Internal Manual P‑COM‑02, which is currently under board review. The Treasury Department must maintain a complete procurement record demonstrating that the eventual award promotes market competition and transparency. Any resulting contract must be submitted to the board for review before execution. The board emphasized that its review is limited to fis‑ cal‑plan alignment and market‑competition requirements un‑ der PROMESA. It did not conduct legal due diligence, back‑ ground checks, or verification of compliance with federal or local procurement laws. The Treasury Department certified that sufficient FY2027 budget exists to cover the $5 million contract, though the over‑ sight board noted that if the agency overspends, it must identify savings elsewhere and submit a budget reprogramming request. The board reserved the right to issue additional observa‑ tions if new information emerges and reiterated that any mate‑ rial changes to the contract must be submitted for review prior to execution.

Map apps are all handling ‘Lake America’ differently By VICTOR MATHER

T

hree map apps, three responses so far to President Donald Trump’s order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America amid an escalating trade war with Canada. Google changed the lake’s name on its Maps application two days after the Aug. 27 executive order was signed, at least for users in the United States. MapQuest publicly refused to make the update, while Apple on Tuesday began to adopt the new name. And the tech companies’ decisions seem to matter to Trump. He had reached out to Apple to ask it to make the chan‑ ge, according to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. “I know that the president reached out to Apple directly,” Burgum told Fox News on Monday. Burgum also said that when place names are ordered to be changed, staff at the Board of Geographic Names “plug that into the software, and then that software cascades down, so all the map providers would do that.” Noting that the name Lake Ontario is 400 years old, Prime

Minister Mark Carney of Canada said on social media, “Naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario — then, now and always.” As of Tuesday evening, the Apple Maps app displayed it as Lake America. It also showed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America: Trump ordered that change just after he was inau‑ gurated in January 2025. Google and Apple made the change on their map apps within a month. MapQuest continues to display the Gulf of Mexico. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for com‑ ment. Google said in a statement: “We update Google Maps to reflect name changes in official government sources.” American users will see Lake America; users in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario; and others will see both names displayed, the company said. The dispute provided an unexpected boost to MapQuest, a pioneering site from the ’90s that had fallen largely into disu‑ se as Google and Apple boomed. It put up a four-word social media post, “We’re not changing it” along with a map labeled “Lake Ontario.” MapQuest was downloaded 80,000 times on Apple’s iOS platform on Sunday, Forbes reported, citing Appfigures, a mar‑ ket intelligence company. In early August, that figure was around 500 daily downloads on average. “One basic problem for the mapping companies is that there is no single uncontested authority to defer to,” said David R. Rain, a professor of geography at George Washington Uni‑ versity. Map companies must make their own decisions when there is a conflict. Showing different names to different users depending on their location “may seem like an elegant technical solution,” he said. “But it raises a big huge cartographic question. Is a map telling us what a government calls a place, or what the people

who live there call it?” Noting the increase in downloads for MapQuest after it took a stand against Lake America, Derek H. Alderman, a professor of geography at the University of Tennessee, said that many people wanted map companies to “take a moral stand” on the matter. It matters to them, he said, adding, “Maps and their name places help define the world we come to live in and know. “Although map tech companies appear on the surface to be simply about delivering the latest and most accurate geogra‑ phic information, they are actually deeply involved in the poli‑ tics of representing the Earth and shaping whose histories and identities are given visibility and legitimacy on maps. This is the true pressure and responsibility under which map tech compa‑ nies work.”

Why the Diamondbacks keep putting up with Ketel Marte By KEN ROSENTHAL / THE ATHLETIC

K

etel Marte turned toward the Arizona Diamondbacks’ dugout, flipped his bat and shook his head with the tiniest of smiles, as if to say, “Don’t mess with me.” The moment, one of the most dramatic of the Diamondbacks’ season, perfectly encapsulated why team officials refuse to give up on him, even when he bails on the club at inopportune times. Tanner Scott’s fastball came in at 97 mph. Marte’s walkoff homer, giving the Diamondbacks a split of their home series with the Los Angeles Dodgers in early June, went out at 113 — the sixth-hardest-hit ball by an Arizona player this season. Marte also holds the top five exit velocities, not to mention the team’s longest homer, at 452 feet. His blast off Scott was a 431-foot shot, but stood as yet another example of how his galvanizing talent can electrify a club. Marte raised both arms in the air as his teammates gleefully surrounded him at home plate. Once free, he blew a kiss with both hands to the crowd. It was the type of celebration teams crave, the type that prompts them to ease their standards to accommodate certain stars. Marte, 32, is one of the top second basemen in baseball. But his latest missteps — failing to show for a game in the middle of a pennant race, then unwinding at a casino while rehabilitating a knee injury — renewed concerns. Some of Marte’s actions might stem from personal matters he is dealing with off the field. But many around the sport still ask: Why do the Diamondbacks tolerate his behavior? The answer is not all that complicated. “He’s an extremely talented player,” general manager Mike Hazen said last week. “At some point, there’s a balance between what you are willing to deal with to get a level of production that can win you baseball games. We’re in the business of winning baseball games.” Marte, when in the right frame of mind, provides elite production at a reduced rate because of the seven-year, $116.5 million contract extension he signed in April 2025, which includes $46 million deferred. And when the Diamondbacks have considered trading him — as they did last offseason, knowing Marte would gain full no-trade protection in April as a player with 10 years of service, five consecutive with the same club — they were not offered what they perceived as fair value for a switchhitter with game-changing power. The Diamondbacks, when left with little choice, will discipline Marte. When he declined to leave his hotel room for a game at Fenway Park on Aug. 17, they briefly placed him on the restricted list for the second consecutive season, without pay. His conduct that night left manager Torey Lovullo, one of his big supporters, feeling betrayed. “It’s kind of getting your heart ripped out by someone you really care about,” Lovullo said. “And I felt I did deserve better.” Lovullo was not the only person in uniform affected by

Ketel Marte’s walk-off homer, which gave the Arizona Diamondbacks a split of their home series with the Los Angeles Dodgers in early June, was one of the most dramatic moments of the Diamondbacks’ season, and perfectly encapsulated why team officials refuse to give up on him. (Instagram via dbacks) Marte’s actions. Marte, a three-time All-Star, also created a distraction for his teammates, many of whom, like Lovullo, initially were concerned only for his well-being. The Diamondbacks, fighting for the third National League wild card, held out hope until moments before first pitch that Marte would join them. The Red Sox wound up trouncing them, 11-1. Three days after his no-show in Boston, Marte apologized to Lovullo and Hazen during a meeting attended by his agent, Charisse Espinosa-Dash, in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Diamondbacks then moved him from the restricted list to the injured list. Marte rejoined the team Monday, when he went 1-for-3 with a walk, in the designated hitter slot, in a 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Lovullo has expressed disappointment in Marte while also offering empathy, saying at one point: “I love Ketel Marte. My relationship with him is not going to change.” Through Espinosa-Dash, Marte declined to comment for this article. Marte’s next step is to speak with reporters and apologize to his teammates. The Diamondbacks will have little choice but to welcome him back, knowing how much he means to the club. But how seriously will they take him when he again says he is sorry? Marte also apologized to the club in 2025 for missing the first three games after the All-Star break following the burglary of his home in Scottsdale. Shortly afterward, The Arizona Republic reported that teammates and others in the organization had “quietly grumbled about his propensity to take days off.” Fans, reporters and even teammates are often unaware of what players endure in their personal lives. The death of Marte’s mother, Elpidia Valdez, in a July 2017 car accident was a matter of public record. Two more recent heartbreaks for Marte were not. Marte, according to a person close to him whom he did not authorize to speak publicly, lost his maternal grandmother in the spring of 2025. He is also currently facing the loss of another close family member, the person said. His balky knee, then, was not his only source of discontent when he secluded himself in his Boston hotel room be-

fore the opening game of the Diamondbacks’ series against the Red Sox. The Diamondbacks knew where Marte was, according to multiple people briefed on the situation. They communicated with him through Espinosa-Dash. But up until game time, no one, including the agent, had any idea whether he would come to the park. “When he’s frustrated, he retreats,” Lovullo said. “This was a classic case of that.” Marte recognizes now that he was wrong for failing to appear, the person close to him said. His appearance at a Scottsdale casino on the night of Aug. 21, while the Diamondbacks played the Cincinnati Reds at Chase Field, also showed questionable judgment but broke no rules. Marte, rehabilitating his knee, was not required to be at the park. But one teammate, granted anonymity for his candor, called it “a slap in the face.” Another said, “That was rubbing people’s noses in it.” For some in the organization, Marte’s history of missing games at critical junctures leaves him little benefit of the doubt. But two of those absences, in late September of both 2023 and 2024, stemmed from physical issues. In 2023, the Diamondbacks went on to win a wild card spot and advance to the World Series with Marte batting .329 with a .914 on-base plus slugging percentage in the postseason and appearing in all 17 games. In 2024, they missed the playoffs by one game. And last season, after Marte missed time after the All-Star break, the frustration of some players toward him surfaced in the Arizona Republic article. Other teammates, however, viewed the criticism of Marte as excessive. When his home was burglarized, Marte was in his native Dominican Republic, making his first trip back since the death of his grandmother. Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo grew emotional when he interrupted one of Lovullo’s news conferences to defend Marte. “I don’t want to speak as a teammate, I want to speak as a brother,” Perdomo said at the time. “He just wants to play baseball.” Diamondbacks people praise Marte as a hard worker. His day-to-day conduct, they say, is not disruptive. Lovullo, however, recently expressed concern that Marte might lack a functional support system. It is not far-fetched to suggest management has been too easy on Marte. But club officials push back on that. In essence, the Diamondbacks are willing to accept an annual hiccup or two from Marte in exchange for his production when he does play. Marte averaged 137 games the past four seasons and still can reach that total this year. Teams covet players who outperform their salaries, providing surplus value. Marte, playing on a below-market contract, routinely offers that type of bonus. Marte is said to be comfortable in Arizona. Why wouldn’t he be? “What does he want to be remembered as?” one Diamondbacks person said. “At some point, this is about him, what he wants his legacy to be.”
