Gov. Jenniffer González Colón on Wednesday signed Senate Bill 609 into law as Act 75-2026 to amend existing domestic violence legislation to limit access to diversion programs in cases of sexual assault within a relationship.
The new law, authored by Sen. Héctor “Gaby” González López of the Arecibo District, amends Act 54 of Aug. 15, 1989, to establish that no person found guilty of the crime of sexual assault, as defined in said law, may be eligible for diversion programs. The provision seeks to align the treatment of the crime with its severity and strengthen protections for victims.
“The purpose of this measure is to establish precise limits within the legal framework to address cases of sexual assault in the context of domestic violence with greater rigor,” González López said.
“This is a necessary correction to ensure that the system responds proportionally to the nature of these crimes,” the senator added. “Furthermore, this law provides victims with greater certainty that they will not have to face the possibility of their aggressor returning to the streets through diversion programs.”
González López noted that prior to the amendment,

the law allowed convicted individuals to access diversion programs under certain circumstances, which created inconsistencies in the application of public policy.
“With this legislative action, it is expressly stipulated that this type of conduct does not qualify for that type of alternative, offering greater security to those who have been victims,” he said.
According to the measure’s preamble, Puerto Rico has seen an increase in cases of sexual violence within intimate partner relationships in recent years, which has prompted a review of the legal tools available for addressing such cases.

The Department of Psychology at the University of Puerto Rico’s Mayagüez Campus (RUM by its acronym in Spanish) issued a statement Tuesday opposing the construction of the proposed Proyecto Esencia luxury tourism and residential megaproject in Cabo Rojo, citing concerns about poverty, inequality and access to essential services across the island’s southwest.
In the statement, the department said its opposition is rooted in what it described as the project’s likely effects on the availability and affordability of basic resources, as well as the potential for the development to deepen existing economic hardship in Cabo Rojo and nearby municipalities including San Germán, Lajas, Sabana Grande and Yauco.
The department pointed to U.S. Census statistics indicating that 43.7% of children ages 0 to 17 in Cabo Rojo live in poverty. It also cited data showing that about 35.8% of Cabo Rojo’s population lived below the poverty line in 2023, with some areas exceeding 60%, arguing that the region’s economic precarity could worsen if the large-scale development project moves forward.
“Our goal is to be part of improving the living conditions of
the families we serve,” said Lizzie García Pabón, director of the Department of Psychology. “That is why we must warn about the potential harm this project represents. Health and opportunities for social and economic mobility would be compromised, with predictable effects on mental health.”
The statement said researchers and experts from multiple disciplines have warned that Proyecto Esencia could strain access to essential services for residents of the southwest, including drinking water and electricity. The department said disruptions or shortages would affect thousands of families already struggling to secure reliable access to those resources, adding that the stress associated with unstable services can harm mental health.
Eduardo A. Lugo Hernández, a professor in the department and a former executive director of Puerto Rico’s Commission to Combat Child Poverty and Social Inequality, said the region already faces elevated poverty, an aging population with significant needs, and inconsistent access to water and energy. “The convergence of these structural problems generates serious disparities that affect people’s health and even put their survival at risk,” he said, adding that economic development in the southwest should be guided by an equity-centered approach that expands access to essential resources and creates dignified, living-wage jobs that enable social mobility.

The island Senate held a special recognition ceremony earlier this week for young people belonging to the Police Athletic League, as part of an initiative led by the District III (Arecibo) Sen. Brenda Pérez Soto aimed at highlighting the work, discipline and commitment of the youth participating in the program.
Tuesday’s event impacted more than five chapters of the organization from the municipalities of Camuy, Hatillo, Arecibo, Manatí and Morovis, where more than 35 outstanding young people were recognized. Prior to the awards ceremony, the senator engaged in a close dialogue with the participants, highlighting not only the young people’s achievements but also

the dedication of the youth workers involved in the program.
“The Police Athletic League celebrated its 83rd anniversary last April. Over time, this organization has forged extraordinary public servants and citizens,” Pérez Soto said. “Many of our young founders are no longer with us, but they paved the way for generations like the current one to enjoy better experiences within this organization. We are very proud to welcome them, talk with them, and contribute our small part with this recognition, which will serve as motivation to continue moving forward.”
Also participating in the event was Vega Alta Mayor María Vega Pagán. Pérez Soto expressed her gratitude for the support provided and reiterated the importance of continuing to foster spaces that promote the positive growth of young Puerto Ricans through programs such as the Police Athletic League.

The Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico has asked a federal judge to deny a renewed request by PREPA bondholders to lift a court-ordered litigation pause so they can pursue the appointment of a receiver for the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) or seek dismissal of the utility’s Title III bankruptcy case.
In its objection filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico before Judge Laura Taylor Swain, the board said the bondholders’ push is “backwards” because they are asking for protection of collateral while resisting efforts to determine the value of the only collateral they are entitled to after a 2024 First Circuit ruling: PREPA’s present and future “net revenues,” if any.
The bondholder groups -- including GoldenTree Asset Management, Assured Guaranty, Syncora Guarantee and National Public Finance Guarantee -- have argued that PREPA is generating and spending net revenues that secure their bonds and that they should be allowed to return to court to
revive motions tied to a receiver and case dismissal.
The oversight board countered that there is “no adequate protection greater than payment in full” and said PREPA’s currently proposed plan of adjustment contemplates paying bondholders the full value of their allowed secured claim once the court determines it. The board also argued that a receiver would still be bound by fiscal plans and budgets certified under the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act, commonly known as PROMESA, and that displacing current private operators LUMA Energy and Genera PR could disrupt the grid’s ongoing transition while exposing the estate to additional costs.
The filing also points to prior rulings in the case in which the court allowed the bondholders to proceed with an accounting dispute and to litigate an administrative expense claim. The oversight board said those steps already provide the bondholders a pathway to develop a record on whether “net revenues” existed historically and how they should be calculated -- issues that would feed into the eventual valuation of any secured claim.
To rebut allegations that PREPA is diverting surplus revenues, the board cited findings in a recent Puerto Rico Energy Bureau rate proceeding describing widespread deterioration across generation, transmission and distribution, plus continued weaknesses in financial recordkeeping. Those conditions, the board argued, undermine the notion that PREPA has been sitting on meaningful excess revenues while bondholders have been blocked from remedies.
PREPA has been in Title III since 2017. The court imposed a broad pause on “substantial PREPA-related litigation” in July 2024 and later extended it, then partially lifted the pause in March 2025 to allow briefing on the bondholders’ administrative expense request and the filing of an amended plan. The court denied the bondholders’ administrative expense bid in March 2026, and the bondholders renewed their request to lift the litigation stay on March 30. Their motion is noticed for a May 20 omnibus hearing, according to the docket.
Judge Swain has not yet ruled on the renewed request to broaden the litigation stay lift.

Astalemate in negotiations between the Center for Molecular Sciences Research at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) and UPR President Zayira Jordán Conde has jeopardized the center’s operations.
An agreement guaranteeing the corporation $8.5 million in recurring funding for six years expired on June 30, 2025.
The expiration of the agreement coincided with Jordán Conde assuming the presidency last July. Ten months later, a new agreement has not been reached to allow the transfer of at least $2 million in funds that were to be allocated to the center for
the current fiscal year, as certified by the UPR board of trustees.
“The funds have not been processed because there is no agreement,” Jordán Conde said during the regular meeting of the UPR governing board on April 30. “The University cannot transfer funds without a signed agreement.”
Her statement came in response to questions from faculty representative Rafael Méndez Tejeda, who has raised this issue at the past three meetings of the governing body.
The Center for Molecular Sciences Research is a UPR-affiliated non-profit corporation whose building construction began in 2004. In 2010, it was designated as an external entity to avoid the instability in the governance of the university system.

The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) is pressing the island’s energy regulator to let customers cover as much as $36.9 million in restructuring and bankruptcy-related professional fees over the next three fiscal years.
The petition comes after the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) moved to slash the utility’s request by two-thirds during the rate review unless it proves the spending does not duplicate work billed by the Financial Oversight and Management Board’s advisers.
In a filing Tuesday in the utility’s rate review case, PREPA asked the PREB to treat the motion as a required certification of “non-duplication” and to restore full funding for its “PREPA Restructuring & Title III” line item after the regulator’s April 15 order conditionally reduced the approved amounts by two-thirds.
PREPA said it requested $18.7 million for fiscal year 2026, $11.15 million for fiscal year 2027 and $7.05 million for fiscal year 2028, but the PREB’s order approved only one-third of those totals -- $6.233 million, $3.717 million and $2.35 million, respectively -- pending the more detailed certification.
The requested 2026 amount includes payments for three firms working on the utility’s restructuring under Title III of the federal Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act, commonly known as PROMESA: $9 million for O’Melveny & Myers
LLP, $8.7 million for Ankura Consulting Group, and $1 million for González & Martínez Law Offices, according to the filing.
PREPA argued that its advisers serve a different client role than the oversight board’s advisers and that multiple layers of oversight already exist to prevent redundant billing. It pointed to review of invoices by PREPA and the Puerto Rico Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Authority, and to fee scrutiny in the federal Title III court, which the utility said bars payment for “unnecessary duplication of services.”
The PREB’s order required certifications for adviser engagements above $500,000 identifying the matters handled and explaining why they do not overlap with work performed for the oversight board. PREPA said the underlying non-duplication framework is already in the record and warned that additional detail could risk revealing privileged legal strategy and internal government deliberations.
PREPA also cited renewed litigation activity in its bankruptcy case, saying bondholders are pursuing additional discovery and have signaled substantial litigation ahead. The utility said participating effectively -- alongside the elected government’s fiscal team -- is a “ratepayer protection” measure because the eventual debt adjustment could affect what customers ultimately pay.
PREPA said it is not seeking an overall budget increase, but a reallocation within the existing revenue requirement to cover

restructuring costs it says are necessary and already tied to approved contracts. The utility asked the PREB to deem its motion the required non-duplication certification and approve the full requested “PREPA Restructuring & Title III” amounts for fiscal years 2026 through 2028.

The Puerto Rico Senate Health Committee, chaired by Sen. Juan Oscar Morales Rodríguez, convened its second public hearing earlier this week as part of the investigation mandated by Senate Resolution 431. Authored by Morales, the resolution calls for an in-depth evaluation of how federal funds are used, managed, and overseen within Puerto Rico’s healthcare system.
The investigation centers on the allocation and use of some $19.5 billion in federal funds provided by the United States Congress.
Guided by the provisions of the resolution, the committee is analyzing several critical aspects, including: whether insurers are fulfilling their payment obligations, the implementation of services as required under federal guidelines, the adequacy of the provider network, denial of contracts or service, and the consequences of those decisions on the delivery of health services throughout Puerto Rico
As part of the evidence examined, the committee reviewed information about outstanding balances owed by the insurers participating
in the Vital Plan to the University Hospital at the Medical Center in Río Piedras. The data revealed that the debts exceed $27 million, with specific amounts identified for each insurer: First Medical owes some $9,381,807.77; Triple-S, $8,984,555.66; MMM Healthcare, $5,031,322.11; and Mennonite Health Plan, $3,691,809.50.
Additional data presented to the Senate panel indicated that a significant portion of claims at the Medical Center remain unpaid for extended periods. The total amount of outstanding claims is $9,648,906, with a substantial share overdue by more than 120 days. The situation directly affects the hospital’s financial and operational stability.
During Tuesday’s second public hearing, representatives from First Medical Health Plan, MMM Holdings, Mennonite Health Plan and Triple-S Salud provided testimony. They discussed the operation of the coordinated care model under the Vital Plan, the management of public funds, and the regulatory compliance measures that govern their activities.
The entities acknowledged the complex regulatory framework that governs the system, including oversight by both state and federal agencies. They highlighted metrics such as the Medical Loss Ratio, which mandates that the majority of funds be directed toward medical
services. The representatives said their processes for awarding and paying claims are consistent with contractual and regulatory requirements, with controls in place to ensure traceability and proper use of resources.
Despite those assurances, the hearings have identified areas requiring further scrutiny. They include the effectiveness of the coordinated care model in practice, the distribution of funds within the system, the capacity of the provider network to meet service demand, and the financial health of hospital institutions.

for ongoing and rigorous legislative oversight.
Morales emphasized that the investigation’s goal extends beyond examining the system’s regulatory framework. The primary objective, he said, is to assess the actual performance of the system and its tangible impact on the public.
“Here, we are evaluating whether the system is fulfilling its fundamental purpose, which is to guarantee access to adequate and timely health services for our people,” Morales stated.
The senator also highlighted the magnitude of public funds involved, stressing the need
“When we talk about $19.5 billion in federal funds, we are talking about a significant investment in the health of the island,” he said. “That level of resources carries with it an equally significant oversight responsibility. Our duty is to ensure that every dollar is being used effectively and that its impact is reflected in patients, providers, and the stability of the system.”
Morales noted that the committee will continue to evaluate and compare information submitted by all sectors within the health system, including hospitals, providers and other relevant entities.

The Justice Department has demanded the identities of every worker who staffed the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia, according to court records, escalating an ongoing federal investigation of the 2020 vote in Georgia’s most populous county that relies on false and debunked claims.
The demand targets employees of Fulton County elections as well as volunteer poll workers, who likely numbered in the thousands during the 2020 election, according to court records.
The demand, which came via a federal grand jury subpoena, appears to be the latest effort by President Donald Trump and his administration to use the investigative power of the federal government to pursue false claims that the 2020 election was stolen. With midterm voting underway in many states, including Georgia, the effort risks further undermining public confidence and sowing chaos among voters.

It is not known what the Justice Department intends to do with the names of election workers. A spokesperson for the Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Robb Pitts, chair of the Fulton County commission, issued a statement Monday calling the subpoena “harassment” and “yet another act of outrageous federal overreach designed to intimidate and to chill participation in elections.”
He added: “Let me be crystal clear. Fulton County will not be intimidated.”
Earlier this year, FBI agents raided an election warehouse in the county, seizing physical ballots from the 2020 election along with other election materials. County officials have since filed a lawsuit to force the Justice Department to return those materials. A ruling from the federal judge overseeing that case could come at any time.
The county received the grand jury subpoena for workers’ names April 20, according to court records. The existence of the subpoena became public Monday evening, when lawyers
for Fulton County filed a motion attempting to block it.
“Its purpose is to target, harass, and punish the President’s perceived political opponents,” the county’s motion stated.
The county board argued that the subpoena “cannot yield any evidence that could result in a criminal prosecution” because, among other things, the statutes of limitations have expired “for any purported 2020 election crimes.”
The county also asserted that the subpoena requires the disclosure of names, positions, email addresses and personal telephone numbers for 10 categories of Fulton County election workers. At a time when “election workers fear for their personal safety,” it would apply to volunteers, temporary poll workers and even bus drivers who operated a mobile voting location, the county filing stated.
Lauren Groh-Wargo, who leads Fair Fight Action, a left-leaning voting rights organization, said election workers across the country are facing increased threats and harassment.
“Roughly a third of election officials are threatened on the job, and more than half worry it’s making it harder to hire and
keep election workers,” Groh-Wargo said in a statement Monday. “They’re trying to break our democracy by attacking the infrastructure, but we are fighting back hard.”
Fulton County, which encompasses most of Atlanta, is a Democratic stronghold and the most populous county in Georgia. The unproven claim that county election workers somehow helped Democrats steal the 2020 election was a major part of a wide-ranging but ultimately fruitless effort by Trump and his supporters to reverse Joe Biden’s victory in the state.
In December 2020, Trump ally Rudy Giuliani, who was working as Trump’s personal lawyer at the time, went before a Georgia state legislative committee and made a number of false accusations against a pair of poll workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Shaye Moss.
The women had been processing returns on election night. Giuliani and others wrongly accused the women of pulling thousands of fraudulent ballots from a suitcase in their vote-counting station and illegally feeding them through voting machines.
That episode was featured in a 2023 criminal racketeering indictment against Trump, Giuliani and 17 others filed by Fani Willis, the district attorney in Fulton County, Georgia. The case was dismissed in late 2025 after Willis was disqualified from handling it.
Freeman and Moss won a $148 million defamation suit against Giuliani. The suit was later settled for an unknown sum.
In the current investigation into Fulton County, which began with a court-ordered seizure of election materials from a county warehouse, the FBI so far has not named any election workers, let alone publicly accused any of wrongdoing.
The county noted in its motion that President Donald Trump has for years “obsessively propagated the debunked conspiracy theory that Fulton County ‘stole’ the 2020 election from him. And he has made it clear that he seeks retribution against those who refuse to indulge his baseless claims.”
The motion quoted a 2025 online post in which the president said that Ruby Freeman “should have to pay Rudy back reparations” and called for her and top Georgia officials to be prosecuted for “the political crime of the century.”

Afederal grand jury returned a four-count indictment Tuesday against Cole Tomas Allen, the man accused of rushing a security point at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in an attempt to kill President Donald Trump.
The indictment charged Allen with assaulting a federal agent, indicating that prosecutors now believe Allen wounded a Secret Service officer who was shot during the incident, as officers scrambled to secure the annual press gala.
The Justice Department had charged Allen with attempting
to assassinate the president, transporting guns with the intent to commit a felony, and firing a shotgun. But it had stopped short of accusing him of shooting the officer, who was hit in his ballistic vest and survived.
Prosecutors say that Allen, 31, traveled from California in April with plans to ambush Trump and other senior administration officials as they mingled with journalists at the dinner.
In an email Allen is said to have sent to friends and family before the attack, he laid out a hierarchy of potential targets, prioritizing Cabinet officials and including Secret Service agents “only if necessary.”
In court filings in April, prosecutors accused Allen of booking a room in the Washington Hilton, where the event has been held for decades, and plotting the attack before the dinner. Video and photos submitted by the government appeared to show Allen storming into the area the dinner was being held armed with a shotgun, a pistol and several knives. He was immediately tackled and arrested.
Upon receiving the grand jury indictment, a federal judge scheduled a May 11 arraignment for Allen, who has yet to enter a plea regarding the initial charges.

The man accused of shooting at Secret Service agents on the National Mall in Washington expressed hostility toward the White House after he was wounded and taken into custody, authorities said earlier this week, as prosecutors prepared federal charges against him.
Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for D.C., said in an interview with ABC News that the man would be charged with an assault on a federal officer and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Asked whether she had any sense of why the gunman was in Washington or whether his actions appeared politically motivated, Pirro said he told authorities on the way to the hospital: “F the White House and ‘kill me, kill me, kill me’ three times,” she said.
Pirro confirmed the gunman was Michael Marx, 45, of Texas.
Shots rang out just south of the White House on Monday afternoon in an exchange of gunfire that also grazed a young bystander in an area packed with pedestrians, officials said.
The suspect, who was shot by Secret Service agents, was taken to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. Marx has yet to face charges. No law enforcement officials
were injured, and there was no immediate sign that the man was targeting anyone in the executive complex, according to Chris McDonald, a congressional affairs official with the Secret Service.
The episode began about 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of 15th Street Southwest and Independence Avenue, when agents walked up to a man “who appeared to be carrying a weapon,” McDonald wrote in an email to Congress on Monday.
Matt Quinn, the deputy director of the Secret Service, told reporters that as the agents approached, Marx ran off and shot at them. The agents fired back and apprehended him, Quinn said. Shortly before the commotion rang out, Vice President JD Vance passed the scene of the shooting in his motorcade, but there was no clear indication that the suspect was targeting the vice president, Quinn added.
A firearm was recovered at the scene, and a 15-year-old boy hit by gunfire was treated for a non-life-threatening wound, officials said.
The shooting took place a little more than a week after a gunman stormed a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner and shot a Secret Service agent in an attack that officials said was targeted at administration officials.

Allen has been held in jail in Washington pending his next court appearance. On Monday, a federal magistrate judge demanded answers about his detention conditions, after Allen’s lawyers said he had been improperly placed on suicide watch and held in solitary confinement after his arrest.
For days after Allen’s arrest, the government had not explained why it believed the Secret Service officer identified by the initials “R.V.” had been shot during the incident.
Todd Blanche, the acting attorney general, had initially announced that a spent shell was found in the shotgun Allen had carried with him. But an early investigation concluded only that the officer was hit once while wearing a protective vest.
With the new charges, the government formally accused Allen of firing at the officer.
“Today’s indictment underscores a simple truth: There is evidence this defendant intended to assassinate the president, and that he shot a U.S. Secret Service officer after he traversed the country with a cache of ammunition to accomplish his goals,” Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney in Washington, said in a statement.
“The use of violence to register dissent is antidemocratic at its core,” she said. “We will pursue the maximum punishment available under the law against anyone who travels to the District of Columbia to engage in such acts.”
During his initial appearance in court in April, a federal magistrate judge told Allen he could face a sentence of up to life in prison if found guilty of attempting to assassinate the president. Allen quietly acknowledged the judge, who urged him to speak up through his lawyers if he continued to face harsh conditions, including limited access to phone calls and visits.

One of the many ironies of Donald Trump’s war against Iran is that only a year ago, most of the president’s critics assumed that any second-term crisis for the American empire would be caused not by reckless war-making but by appeasement and retreat. In particular, the Trumpian push for peace between Russia and Ukraine was cast as the great betrayal, craven and sinister in equal measure, that would yield disaster for Europe and disgrace for the United States.
Yet today, as Trump struggles to find an exit strategy from his Middle Eastern war of choice, his administration’s policy toward Ukraine looks like everything his Iran policy is not: an effective rebalancing for a multipolar world, in which a major rival has been contained and weakened with a reduced American commitment, and our regional allies have actually substituted for our overstretched capacities rather than trying to force us to stretch too far on their behalf.
A lot of Ukraine’s champions would recoil from that description. To the contrary, they would say, our Ukraine policy has been a betrayal, with unjust pressure on Kyiv to make a deal and an unfair retraction of American support. It’s just that Ukrainian heroism and European support have filled the breach, proving along the way that Trump and others were wrong to treat the war effort as foredoomed.
The last part has truth to it. Many observers, myself included, assumed that the failure of the Ukrainian offensive in 2023 portended a future in which Russia would slowly but surely grind Ukrainian forces down. The Trump administration’s push for a negotiated peace reflected, in part, an assumption that Ukraine’s time was running out. Instead, bravery, resilience and the drone war revolution have enabled the Ukrainians to keep the Russians stalemated, to such a degree that the Putin regime looks more unstable and paranoid than at any point since the early days of the war.
But the means of Ukrainian survival, where Europe steps up as the United States steps back, is not a sign of American failure. It’s what successful American adaptation looks like in a world where it’s conspicuously no longer the 1990s. Of all the areas of danger and crisis in the world, Europe’s eastern border-

world, in which a major rival has been contained and weakened with a reduced American commitment ...,” Times columnist Ross Douthat writes. (Brendan Hoffman/The New York Times)
lands are the place where America should be able to rely on our allies as a first line of defense. The fact that Ukraine has held the line with more European support and less direct American aid is proof that this recalibration can succeed — and as such, it’s good news for our empire’s sustainability, not a sign that we’re about to cede global dominance to Brussels or Ottawa or Berlin.
Now, would it have been preferable to reach this point with a less chaotic policy approach, with less moral equivalence in American rhetoric toward Kyiv and Moscow, less bullying rhetoric toward our allies? Of course! Wrestling Trump toward an optimal policy is always an ugly business and often a closerun thing.
But two points are worth making about how the wrestling has worked. The first is that Trump hasn’t simply reduced American commitments while yelling at the Europeans to do more. He has reduced American financial commitments while sustaining or increasing key forms of battlefield support, such that Ukraine now has access to certain advantages it lacked in the Biden era — including longer-range missiles and the intelligence sharing required to strike deeper into Russia. It’s debatable whether this is the perfect balance, but it is a balance rather than just a washing of our hands.
The second is that the case for Trump as a foreign policy president has always been that his harshness toward friends and allergy to idealism sometimes ends up delivering more for the United States than the smoother habits of diplomacy. If you think that we need a rearmed Europe to help police and stabilize its own corner of the world, then Trump’s crude bullying has been a geopolitical accelerant — a nonideal but nonetheless effective mechanism, as Andrew Sullivan suggests, to force Europe to “break with its passive past.” A maximally adroit and more idealistic president might have done better. But some presidents might have just kept us in a quagmire and let our allies
stay asleep.
Which brings us back to the contrast with the Iran conflict, and the role our alliances have played in the Middle Eastern war. Here Trump let himself be talked into a high-risk gambit by one ally, Israel, while initially reassuring our allies in Europe that we wouldn’t need help from them, and then swinging around to rage that they weren’t helping us enough. Meanwhile, our Persian Gulf allies, who grew rich under our military umbrella, expect us to finish what we started without being able to supply much meaningful military support in their own backyard.
The ultimate outcomes of the Iran war and the Ukrainian war are both still in the fog. But with Ukraine, you can at least glimpse the shape of a security architecture that could outlast Trump and be stabilized by his successors. In the Middle East, by contrast, everything’s still on America’s shoulders, and whether as an overburdened Atlas or a tied-down Gulliver, there’s no clear path to burden sharing and no easy way for us to pivot out.
In a world where the administration’s guiding theory placed the Middle East at the center of American interests, I suppose that seeking a security dividend in the Ukrainian theater and immediately spending in the Persian Gulf would have some consistency.
But in a world where China is clearly the central threat and challenge, it’s a very strange thing to have partially disentangled ourselves from one secondary conflict only to let a different web of allies, clients and enemies immediately tie us down.

Solo aquellas

‘Good News’
Real life is truly stranger than fiction, as proven by this Korean dark comedy, whose harebrained premise, you’ll be amazed to know, is lifted from a true story. In 1970, members of Japan’s Red Army Faction, a militant communist group, hijacked a Japanese Airlines plane and demanded it be flown to North Korea. Together, Japanese and Korean officials hatched a plan to direct the plane to Gimpo Airport in Seoul, South Korea, which they disguised as the airport in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea.
It’s a tale made for a movie (the setdressing of the airport is a particularly cinematic touch), and director Byun Sung-hyun runs with it in “Good News.” He crafts a five-part, time-hopping, nail-biting satire that makes hay out of the hypocrisy of all of its characters: the doddering Japanese and Korean politicians, concerned more with oneupmanship than the lives onboard the plane; the U.S. military officials, dumb, domineering and self-interested; the young, babyfaced Red Army militants, whose touted in-
spiration for the mission is a manga series called “Ashita no Joe.” The humor runs the range from mordant to slapstick, and the performances nimbly balance physical comedy and a subtler satirical realism — particularly those of Sul Kyung-gu, who plays a political fixer named Nobody, and Hong Kyung, who plays an enterprising air traffic controller charged with leading the whole operation. (Stream it on Netflix.)
‘Eko’
On top of a foggy mountain in the South Indian state of Kerala, a dog-breeding mobster owns a large house surrounded by the jungle and patrolled by rare and dangerous purebreds from Malaysia. His wife — or rather, his favorite wife, as we soon learn — lives in the house with a helper; in the village below, friends, foes and cops lurk, kept at bay by the canines. The mobster, Kuriachan (Saurabh Sachdeva), has been missing for several years, and multiple people are on his tail. Each has his or her own sinister reasons, which are revealed slowly over the course of this atmospheric thriller, in which no character can be trusted and no twist can be anticipated.

Layering different perspectives and timelines — which go back all the way to World War II — director Dinjith Ayyathan crafts a film in which the borders between human and animal, nature and soul, allies and enemies, are blurred. What unfolds is both gripping and deeply disturbing, as Ayyathan traces the networks of money, caste and misogyny that rule this place, its insidious violence only thinly masked by the beautiful scenery. (Stream it on Netflix.)
‘Wolf and Dog’
Blending an almost verité-seeming naturalism with hints of magical realism, filmmaker Cláudia Varejão’s film is a luminous and surprising tale of queer coming-of-age. The teenage Ana (Ana Cabral) lives on the island of São Miguel, on the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Hers is a small, insular and conservative town, where religion and the patriarchy reign supreme. Ana and her friend Luis (Ruben Pimenta) both defy the traditional dictates of gender and sexuality, straining against the island’s confines and dreaming of a life elsewhere.
What’s refreshing about “Wolf and Dog” is that the film acknowledges the bigotry faced by the island’s queer community but doesn’t belabor it; instead Varejão stages exuberant drag-queen performances in queer bars, neon-streaked dance parties on the beach and religious processions that Luis and his friends join with sparkly, gender-fluid outfits and glittery makeup on their faces. This is a film of overwhelming beauty, be it the landscape, the actors or the colors, and it pushes us to imagine a different world — one of defiant queer joy and endless possibilities — even as we inhabit this one. (Stream it on Tubi.)
‘Her Body’
Directed by Natalie Cisarovska, “Her Body” is a biopic of a remarkable figure: Andrea Absolonova, a star athlete on the high dive who became a porn phenomenon after an injury wrecked her sports career. Cisarovska’s film begins in the 1990s, in the lead up to Absolonova’s accident while training for the Olympics. Across unshowy, intimately observed scenes of her life, we see how the sport consumes Absolonova, played here by Natalia Germani; how it commandeers her day-to-day routines, her understanding of her self, and her ambitions, which are egged
on by her father. She’s known little else of life when the injury cuts off her career. Adjusting to a regular existence, working a job as a supermarket cashier, all feel unbearable. Then a lover suggests she model nude for him and a new world opens up, giving her a chance to pursue excellence in yet another field that employs her physicality.
Delicately, without judgment, pity or forced commentary, Cisarovska shows us the perils of a life reduced to the body, and the various, often unnoticed ways in which women’s autonomy is constricted even outside of work like pornography. When, at the end, Absolonova’s body betrays her once and for all, it comes almost as a reprieve, freeing our heroine’s heart and mind to soar beyond her corporeal confines. (Stream it on Tubi.)
‘The Heirloom’
For anyone who lived with a partner through the COVID lockdowns, this Canadian indie comedy may hit a little too close to home, making you either smile or flinch in recognition. Playing versions of themselves, director Ben Petrie and actress Grace Glowicki star as a couple living together during the pandemic. Eric (Petrie) is trying, and failing, to make progress on his screenplay, and Allie (Glowicki), feeling stuck in her own ways, gets fixated on adopting a rescue dog. They fight, negotiate, canoodle and dream, and finally get a whippet named Milly from the Dominican Republic. Then they fight, negotiate, canoodle and dream with even more intensity. Their arguments about Milly — what to feed her, how to train her — become proxy conversations about their relationship. Eric, inspired, decides halfway through to make a movie about their life with the dog, adding a wry, metafictional framework that makes the ensuing scenes feel slippery: Are they — meaning Eric and Allie, but also Petrie and Glowicki — acting? Are they talking about their own lives or performing fictional dialogue? Eventually, we realize that it doesn’t really matter. Performances and metaphors are often refuges for the truth, means by which to say out loud the things we may otherwise be unable to articulate. (Stream it on Ovid.) The San

Hedge funds pounced on the U.S./Iran ceasefire to post positive performances in April, with some reaping returns from bullish bets placed just before the April 8 ceasefire announcement, reports from prime brokerages and industry analysts show.
Stock pickers returned more than 9% in April, their best monthly performance since Goldman Sachs started keeping track in 2016, said the prime brokerage in a note to clients on Saturday.
The S&P 500 index rallied over 10% in April, the European STOXX 600 index gained almost 5%, while the dollar fell almost 2% against a basket of currencies.
Hedge funds benefited from the broad stocks rally and from individual trades that didn’t depend on this, the Goldman Sachs note said.
Tech-focused stock pickers returned a record result, nearly 19% in April, it added.
Hopes that a U.S.-Iran peace deal might be imminent propelled global stocks to new highs and sent oil prices tumbling on Wednesday, with the U.S. AI frenzy intensifying on strong earnings and reports of mega spending commitments in the sector.
In my column today, I look at the remarkable resilience of emerging markets to the global energy shock - EM stocks are at a record high, and bond spreads are the tightest in over a decade. If a peace deal in the Middle East is reached, this may well continue. But if not?

Today’s Talking Points
* It’s vol over
The VIX volatility index, Wall Street’s so-called ‘fear index’, on Wednesday nudged to its lowest level in over three months. It is below where it was when the Iran war started in late February, and significantly down from its war peak.

It’s always a conundrum - does lower implied volatility lead to higher stock prices, or vice versa? It doesn’t really matter. The fact is Wall Street is surging to fresh high after fresh high, and investors see little sense in buying protection in the options market. Whether you agree with it or not, this market appears to have momentum.
* The $1 trillion club
Samsung joined the $1 trillion market cap club on Wednesday, its shares soaring 14% as part of a global AI chip surge that must be taking even tech bulls by surprise. Samsung becomes the second Asian company after TSMC with a trillion-dollar value.

Iran said on Wednesday that it was reviewing an American proposal to end the war, a day after President Donald Trump abruptly paused a new U.S. military effort to protect ships in the Strait of Hormuz, citing “great progress” in talks with Tehran.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, said that his government had not yet given its response to Pakistan, which has been acting as a mediator between Tehran and Washington. Neither he nor Trump said what the U.S. proposal contained.
“After finalizing its considerations, Iran will convey its views to the Pakistani side,” Baghaei told the semiofficial Iranian news agency ISNA.
Trump, speaking at a Mother’s Day event at the White House, said the Iranians “want to make a deal; they want to negotiate.”
“We’re not going to let Iran have a nuclear weapon, and we’re not going to let that happen, and we won’t let that happen,” Trump said. “So we’re dealing with people that want to make a deal very much, and we’ll see whether or not they can make a deal that’s satisfactory to us.”
Though Trump said he was pausing the effort to safeguard ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. military was continuing to enforce a blockade on Iranian ports aimed at strangling the Iranian economy.
On Wednesday, a U.S. Navy warplane disabled an Iranian-flagged oil tanker that had ignored “repeated warnings” not to cross the blockade, according to U.S. Central Command, which oversees U.S. forces in the Middle East.
An F/A-18 Super Hornet launched from the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln fired several rounds of 20 mm ammunition from its cannon, striking the rudder of the ship, the Hasna, Central Command said. The vessel was headed to an Iranian port on the Gulf of Oman, but was “no longer transiting to Iran,” the U.S. military said.
In a social media post earlier in the day, Trump said that the war would end, and vessels would be able to pass safely through

President Donald Trump speaks during a Military Mother’s Day event in the East Room of the White House in Washington, on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. Iran said on Wednesday that it was reviewing an American proposal to end the war, a day after President Trump abruptly paused a new U.S. military effort to protect ships in the Strait of Hormuz, citing “great progress” in talks with Tehran. (Tierney L. Cross/The New York Times)
the Strait of Hormuz — the vital shipping route Iran has effectively closed — if Iran “agrees to give what has been agreed.” He did not elaborate on what those terms were.
“If they don’t agree, the bombing starts, and it will be, sadly, at a much higher level and intensity than it was before,” Trump wrote.
The threat added to contradictory messages from the administration about the status of the war, which Trump has lately taken to calling a “skirmish.”
Just a day earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared that the active phase of the war was over, though the United Arab Emirates said it continued to face Iranian missiles and drones. The United States, Rubio said, was now focused on a new, defensive mission aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He said U.S. forces would open fire on the Iranians only if they threatened commercial ships or the U.S. military.
Hours after Rubio spoke at the White House, Trump, in a social media post, said the effort to protect ships in the strait “will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalized and signed.”
Trump said he was pausing the operation at the request of Pakistan and other countries, which he did not name. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, in a social media post on Wednesday, said the request had also been made by Saudi Arabia, and he thanked Trump for his “gracious response.”
“We are very hopeful that the current momentum will lead to a lasting agreement that secures durable peace and stability for the region and beyond,” Sharif said.
In public, there has been little sign of progress in the diplomatic push to end the war, which began when the United States and Israel started bombing Iran in late February. Iran retaliated by closing the strait and firing on the U.S. military and Israel, as well as on its Gulf neighbors.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement that Israel’s security Cabinet had convened and that he was planning to speak with Trump in the coming hours. The statement said that Israel and the United States shared the goal of removing enriched uranium from Iran, and that Trump believed that objective was achievable “one way or another.”
Earlier Wednesday, a spokesperson for Iran’s parliamentary national security committee pushed back against a report in Axios that the United States and Iran were close to agreeing to a one-page memorandum to end the war, calling it “more a list of American wishes than a reality.” The spokesperson, Ebrahim Rezaei, warned that Iran was ready to respond if the United States did not grant what he called the “necessary concessions.”
The navy of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard suggested Wednesday that it expected to retain control over the Strait of Hormuz. In a social media post, the navy said that it would be able to guarantee safe passage to vessels complying with its rules when the American threat was “neutralized.”
Seeking to break the deadlock over the strait, President Emmanuel Macron of France is hoping to persuade the United States and Iran to reopen the contested waterway even before they agree on a deal to end the war, two senior French officials said Wednesday.
Macron has proposed that the two sides remove the status of the strait from broader negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missiles and support for militia groups in the region, the officials said. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive diplomatic matter. Such a compromise, these officials said, could allow a multinational force that France is marshaling, along with Britain and other European countries, to begin escorting commercial ships through the strait relatively quickly, restoring a semblance of normalcy to a gravely disrupted global economy.
A parallel effort to end the fighting in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militant group, has also come under intense strain. Despite a ceasefire brokered by the White House, Israel carried out an airstrike in Beirut’s southern suburbs on Wednesday, the first such attack in the Lebanese capital since the truce took effect last month.
In a statement, Israel said it had targeted the commander of Hezbollah’s Radwan force, the group’s elite fighting unit. There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah.

U.S. and Venezuelan officials have promised a new era of accountability for Venezuela’s lucrative oil industry after the downfall of President Nicolás Maduro.
President Donald Trump said the United States would control Venezuelan oil sales. Venezuela would submit monthly budgets to the White House, the Trump administration said, and the United States said it hired auditors to check receipts.
Venezuela’s new leader and Trump’s ally, Delcy Rodríguez, said the public could trace every oil dollar on a new website.
None of these initiatives, however, have thus far shed light on where Venezuela’s oil money has been going, prompting questions about the political will in Washington and Caracas.
Yet even with the best intentions, Washington’s plan to show how and where Venezuela’s oil riches are being spent would be a gargantuan task. Decades of plundering have left Venezuela with an opaque and deeply corrupt oil industry, which Rodríguez had largely failed to solve during her previous role running the national economy.
For every $2 that Venezuela earned selling oil earlier this decade, $1 was stolen, internal documents and official statistics show.
The stakes are even higher today. For Trump, his plan to unlock Venezuela’s massive oil potential with $100 billion of American investment hinges in part on convincing U.S. oil executives that his administration can establish the rule of law.
For Rodríguez, assuring Venezuelans that the oil industry, a core part of the country’s national identity, benefits many and not just the few is vital to improving her long odds of winning a competitive presidential election that the United States is pushing for next year.
It’s unclear how much corruption Rodríguez would tolerate in order to keep her grip on the government, which remains filled with Maduro’s apparatchiks and their businessowner patrons.
During Maduro’s 13-year rule, Venezuela’s omnipresent state oil company, known as PDVSA, had become his family’s personal estate, allowing relatives and cronies to sell oil at highly preferential terms. The patronage greased the wheels of the ruling apparatus, ensuring its loyalty to Maduro, who survived multiple crises before being captured in January by U.S. Special Forces.
The opaque oil trading schemes continued right up to Maduro’s fall, and some beneficiaries have kept quietly doing business with PDVSA under Rodríguez, according to internal documents and interviews with Venezuelan oil officials and people close to the industry.
The questionable deal making is testing her promise to make a clean break with Maduro’s economic policies, which she has blamed for Venezuela’s prolonged financial crisis.
These previously unreported documents provide a rare glimpse of the scale of graft during Maduro’s final years, which were shaped by an economic standoff with the United
States and mounting repression at home.
The documents and interviews also show the central role played by a relative of Maduro, Carlos Malpica Flores, whom several Venezuelan oil officials and industry insiders have described as the guardian of the Maduro family’s wealth. The people interviewed for this article spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid reprisals.
The Trump administration imposed sanctions on Malpica, 53, in December, claiming he had “facilitated the continued corruption of the Maduro regime.” Malpica did not respond to questions sent through a business partner and two relatives.
PDVSA documents show that shell companies controlled by Malpica and other businesspeople close to Maduro exported oil worth $11 billion in 2021 and 2022 without paying anything to the state company. That amount represented half of all of Venezuela’s oil revenues in those two years, statistics from the country’s central bank show.
The off-the-books oil sales appear to have violated Venezuelan law at the time, which gave PDVSA sole custody of the country’s oil wealth.
Since Maduro’s removal and the imposition of U.S. control of Venezuela’s oil exports in January, Malpica appears to have lost access to crude sales, according to people close to the industry. But the people, as well as a senior Venezuelan oil official, say Malpica continues profiting from his companies that run oil fields, provide services to PDVSA and ship oil products locally.
Venezuela’s government did not respond to requests for comment. The Trump administration declined to comment publicly for this article.
An administration official said Venezuela’s government was providing commitments that funds were being properly spent.
A senior State Department official, Michael Kozak, told Congress last month that the U.S. government hired KPMG, a global financial services firm, to audit Venezuela’s oil sales, adding that the firm will provide reports at a later, uns-

pecified date. Venezuela’s central bank said last week that it separately hired another auditing firm, without providing additional details.
The story of Malpica epitomizes the transformation of the Venezuelan economy into a personal fief of the Maduro family, a system still partly in place despite a leadership change.
Malpica’s career quickly took off. Months after taking power, Maduro appointed him to the board of Venezuela’s development bank, known as Bandes. Soon after, he became the national treasurer and PDVSA’s head of finance.
The positions gave Malpica unchecked access to Venezuela’s oil wealth, which he continued to exploit after leaving the public sector in 2016 and becoming a PDVSA subcontractor and oil buyer.
In late 2022, PDVSA’s board met to take stock of years of unpaid oil bills left by Malpica and other Maduro confidants, according to the meeting’s presentation seen by the Times. The board counted nearly 240 oil tankers that left without payment between 2019 and 2022, costing the Venezuelan state $13 billion.
The board voted to effectively write that money off, the presentation shows.
Months later, Rodríguez took charge of PDVSA after orchestrating the downfall of her predecessor Tareck El Aissami, a protege of Maduro who is on trial on corruption charges. Under her management, PDVSA’s most blatant irregularities, such as unpaid oil sales, largely stopped.
But Malpica and other businesspeople close to Maduro continued receiving preferential access to oil, showing the limits of her initiatives.
In 2023, for example, a shell company connected to Malpica became the second largest exporter of Venezuela’s crude, just behind Chevron, a multinational firm that has produced oil in Venezuela for a century, the documents show.
Copies of some of the contracts show that the shell company, China-registered Hangzhou Energy, received oil from PDVSA on highly favorable and unusual terms despite not having any history of business activity. A contract for 2022 shows that Hangzhou was allowed to sell about a tenth of the country’s export volumes that year in return for providing the government with an unspecified amount of “humanitarian aid.”
It is unclear how much aid Hangzhou eventually delivered or what it included. Ostensibly set up in response to American sanctions, oil-for-food deals similar to the one obtained by Hangzhou became a major source of corruption during Maduro’s final years, siphoning billions of dollars from the state at a time of humanitarian crisis, according to the U.S. government and investigations by a Venezuelan news outlet, Armando.Info.
An email to Hangzhou’s operations manager, Zhang Junling, went unanswered.
Malpica’s close relationship with Maduro and his wife helped him survive PDVSA’s periodic purges, which have landed four of its recent presidents and dozens of executives in jail, including most of those who signed contracts with Hangzhou.

After an NBA game in January, Rudy Gobert, the Minnesota Timberwolves center, racked his brain for a message to send to his protege, Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs, in the opposing locker room.
“Ask him if he can beat me at chess without the timer bailing him out,” Gobert suggested to a reporter.
The relationship between Gobert, the face of French basketball for the past decade, and Wembanyama, the NBA’s new enfant terrible, has deep roots. The two players challenge each other on the basketball court, but they relish pushing each other off it.
Wembanyama laughed when he received Gobert’s message a few minutes later, replying by saying he looked forward to another meeting of the minds in the future.
Now, they have it, possibly seven games of it. Their chessboard has a 3-point line and 12-minute quarters. And it started Monday, when the Timberwolves beat the Spurs, 104-102, in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series.
Wembanyama, 22, the NBA’s reigning winner of the Defensive Player of the Year Award, is going against Gobert, 33, who has won the most of them in NBA history.
for years. Now they stand in each other’s way
The 7-foot-4 prodigy who is reshaping the game is pitted against the 7-1 veteran who has mastered the skill of containing it. It’s a meeting of the player taking over the game and the big brother who prepared him for this moment.
“I love trying to give him everything he needs, to answer all his questions,” said Gobert, who had 7 points and 10 rebounds in Monday night’s game. “Try to be the best mentor I can be for him.”
Wembanyama, the Spurs’ Most Valuable Player Award candidate, had 11 points, 15 rebounds and 12 blocks in Game 1. Game 2 was slated for Wednesday night at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.
Gobert has been the person most responsible for the Timberwolves’ evolution into a defensive-minded team. From the moment he was acquired in 2022, he has served as the backbone of a team that has advanced to the second round for the third consecutive season and is gunning for its third consecutive Western Conference finals appearance.
Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets presented an immense test for Gobert in the first round, one he passed with flying colors. Now Gobert faces a different, but no less imposing, opponent he knows all too well.
“We faced a contender in the first round, now we face another contender,” Gobert told reporters. “As a competitor, what more can we ask for? That’s what we sacrifice for, we work for every single day. That’s what I’ve prepared myself for since I’m 12 years old.”
Wembanyama knew his first title pursuit in the NBA might go through the man who helped him get here. “It’s even more fun if we’re playing against Rudy,” he said before the series began. Gobert called it a moment that is “amazing for French basketball” and a dream come true as the young people of France watch the game from afar.
They now have to ruin each other’s current chapters in a story that is a decade in the making.
“He’s completely free on the court, and he’s really starting to master his craft, even though he still has a lot of growth upon him,” Gobert said of Wembanyama. He added: “Obviously, I think a lot of the growth that he had is going to be physical. Keep getting stronger, keep being more resistant.”
Gobert has a lot to do with that evolution. He remembered hosting a children’s basketball tournament in 2017 when their shared agent, Jérémy Medjana, introduced him to Victor and his mother, Elodie. At first, the Wolves center was not struck by Wembanyama’s size — he was 5-11 — but more captivated by Elodie, who is 6-3.
Then Gobert found out Wembanyama was only 13.
“You could tell he was a baby and would keep growing,” Gobert said.
From that point, Gobert kept tabs on Wembanyama. He wanted to get in the gym with him when he was ready and show him the nuances of guarding the paint in the

NBA.
They reunited three years later for a two-on-two workout alongside French centers Vincent Poirier and Maxime Raynaud. By that point, Wembanyama, at 16, was taller than the 7-1 Gobert.
There are videos of them shooting hoops, but Wembanyama took away even more from Gobert when they hit the weight room afterward. He wanted to see how Gobert managed to fill out his frame while staying nimble. Wembanyama was getting a hands-on education in longevity.
“After that, we became friends, and I was paying very close attention to his development,” Gobert said. “I always thought he was a little different than the other guys. Not only because of his physical tools, but because of his mindset.”
Wembanyama has long known he would not be well served bulking up to look like David Robinson or Joel Embiid. Gobert represented a path toward a sustainable training program that could withstand the rigors of the NBA. Gobert could teach him everything about pick-and-roll angles, shot altering and defense.
But Wembanyama needed to learn how a veteran of playoff battles still played 70-plus games a season after all these years.
“As a role model, there’s lots of things that he’s inspired me and I think should inspire more people,” Wembanyama said. “In terms of taking care of your body, he should be a role model for all big men.”
Gobert is known for his daily focus on yoga and meditation. He once went on a 64-hour darkness retreat in 2023 to focus on his mind-body connection, a journey that parallels Wembanyama’s 10-day venture to a Shaolin temple last summer. Both seek different perspectives on training while yearning to understand the connection between their career pursuits and their sense of self.
“We have so many conversations about how to maximize your physical potential, but it’s much deeper than that,” Gobert said. “It’s how to maximize our spiritual and mental potential, and Victor is a very curious kid.”
To make bodies of their size move with so much efficiency and fluidity, players such as Gobert and Wembanyama need a deeper bond with their feet and core to help distribute effort more evenly throughout the body. Gobert helped Wembanyama embrace proprioception — the body’s sense of orientation — which helps spread the strain of forceful moves and even hyperextensions. It is part of why Wembanyama can maintain balance even when he is low to the ground and can change direction in a way nobody near his size has achieved.
Gobert often speaks to Wembanyama about how to sharpen what he calls their “superpowers.” They have a meticulous process of activation and recovery, doing various forms of meditation and stimulus training to make sure every element of the body is working in concert. Gobert praises Wembanyama’s thirst for knowledge, which turned out to be quite literal.
“A few weeks ago, he asked me what kind of filter I have in my house for water,” Gobert said recently. “It just tells you how
his mind is. I try to talk to the young guys here about the food they eat and stuff like that. But I don’t get those kinds of questions.”
He said, perhaps facetiously, that he is praying for the day Anthony Edwards asks him those kinds of questions, saying how these types of inquiries show how Wembanyama’s desire to maximize his body is different.
“He has the extra discipline that the greats have, and he puts in the work,” Gobert said. “He understands that, obviously, his body is the key, and his mind. He’s really trying to master both.”
When Wembanyama was diagnosed with a blood clot in his shoulder in February 2025, Gobert reached out to offer support and guidance. He could feel the devastation coming from Wembanyama not to be able to play or train. The path of his protege’s life had been put on hold, creating a feeling of aimlessness in the immediate aftermath.
“I remember him being very frustrated, not being able to play,” Gobert said. “But he has grown so much from that experience because it made him realize that nothing is granted in life.”
Wembanyama emerged from that setback with a refreshed sense of purpose in his career and his role as a public persona. He has become outspoken on everything from gun violence to basketball ethics. He is open about his hopes and dreams and how he deals with his ups and downs. He stands on business when he sheds a tear and does not hide behind the tough athlete tropes.
As they prepare for the longest battle of their friendship, Gobert is proudest of the person his protege has become.
“It’s pretty amazing to see that he’s one of a kind — and not just physically,” Gobert said. “He’s a special soul, a special person.”
He added: “I really try to be there for him and, obviously, it’s way beyond basketball. I want him to be good, be well. It’s something that I truly care about.”

The Criollos of Caguas defeated the visiting Vaqueros of Bayamón 100-99 in overtime on Tuesday night at Roger Mendoza Coliseum.
As a tribute to Puerto Rican basketball great José Rafael “Piculín” Ortíz Rijos, who died early Tuesday at age 62, all Criollos players wore the name “Piculín” on their uniforms during the game.
Caguas dominated for much of the first half, leading 24-17 at the end of the first quarter and going into halftime with a 45-34 lead.
Bayamón rallied in the third quarter, outscoring Caguas 28-19 to cut the deficit to just two points heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, the Vaqueros took the lead following a three-pointer by Gary Browne, and the contest remained tight throughout the final minutes. Bayamón’s Xavier Cooks tied the score at 86 with less than a minute remaining, and regulation time ended in a tie, forcing overtime.
Bayamón opened the extra period with a 4-0 run, but the Criollos responded and kept the score close going into the final 30 seconds. Travis Trice scored the go-ahead basket for Caguas with 20.3 seconds left, giving the home team what would prove to be the winning margin.
The Vaqueros failed to convert on their final possession, and the Criollos celebrated the home victory.
Trice led the Criollos with 22 points and 11 assists. Louis King added 19 points and 8 rebounds, while Moses Brown and Alexander Kappos contributed 17 points each.
Jae Crowder finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for the
