GOOD MORNING

Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz announced that the report from the upper chamber’s Committee of the Whole hearing on Tuesday regarding the testimony by La Fortaleza Chief of Staff Francisco Domenech Fernández will result in referrals to multiple state and federal authorities.

“We are going to refer all the information that needs to be referred to [the Government Ethics Office], to the FBI, to the Department of Justice, to the Inspector General, to the Puerto Rico Comptroller, to everyone,” Rivera Schatz said in a radio interview. “To all, to all agencies that have authority over this.”

The Senate leader emphasized that numerous questions remain surrounding a $4 million transaction linked to the firm Politank. Domenech said he sold his stake in the firm for that amount. Rivera Schatz said the Senate will summon Domenech’s aide Ana Delgado, the Office of Government Ethics, and likely former electoral auditor Manuel Torres Nieves to clarify statements by Domenech regarding his role in Politank. Rivera Schatz also pointed to contradictions between Domenech’s testimony and that of former Health Secretary Carlos Mellado López.

One of the central controversies, he said, involves recusals and the absence of a formal protocol for Domenech to recuse himself from intervening in contracts linked to Politank.

“So this has potential violations of the Government Ethics Act,” Rivera Schatz added. “And obviously he has presented information here that is not correct or truthful. He will have to face those consequences.”

The Senate president further questioned the reliability of

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón said Wednesday that questions regarding the Politank transaction should be directed to the company’s new owner, insisting that she does not know who the current proprietors are and that Francisco Domenech Fernández sold the business before being sworn in as La Fortaleza chief of staff.

“Look, I don’t get involved in anyone’s business, nor do I get involved in matters that have nothing to do with the government,” the governor said during a press conference in Naguabo for the start of repavement work on highway PR -901 between Yabucoa and Maunabo. “This individual -- my chief of staff -- sold his business. If he had said he sold his house, would we be standing here discussing who bought the house from him? Ask the new owner of the house; ask the new owner of the business. I believe that is the appropriate course of action.”

the lobbyists’ registry as a verification tool. He noted that the comptroller has acknowledged lacking full visibility of all government contracts.

“And the lobbyists’ registry -- listen to this -- hasn’t been updated since April 2025,” Rivera Schatz said. “Yet he stated under oath that his subordinate checked that registry to determine who was or wasn’t a Politank client. Ana Delgado will be here. So we’ll see what happens.”

Rivera Schatz also confirmed that the Senate committee is still awaiting written responses and additional documents requested during the hearing.

“Those sent by colleague [Roxanna] Soto Aguilú and the others -- well, we’re giving them until the 6th, right?” he said. “And the other materials requested by the members, we’ll allow time for those as well.”

“Furthermore, the person you mentioned is a former secretary of the Senate. Let them subpoena him,” the Governor added, responding to questions regarding Manuel Torres Nieves and the purchase of Politank shares.

González Colón insisted that she sees no conflict of interest in Domenech remaining in his post, and she defended the internal mechanism implemented to handle matters related to the firm. She also reiterated that the controversy amounts to a political attack against her administration and against the man, Domenech, who served as her campaign manager.

“Let’s put this in plain English,” she said. “The guy sold his business just as anyone here might sell their car or sell a house. Whatever that house or car does afterward -- or whoever ends up living in the property -- is a matter for the new occupant or the new owner. The La Fortaleza chief of staff sold his business prior to being sworn in […]. End of story. End of story.”

PREPA bondholders, project developer seek to intervene in IRP development process

Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) bondholders and the local firm promoting a subsea power transmission line between the U.S. island territory and the Dominican Republic have moved to intervene in the development of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), a master blueprint that will determine the island’s public policy on generation mix, grid modernization priorities, and renewable energy targets for the future.

Both parties claim they are uniquely posi tioned to safeguard their interests during de velopment of the IRP, according to filings with the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau’s (PREB) case NEPR‑AP‑2023‑0004.

National Public Finance Guarantee Corp., Golden Tree Asset Management, Syncora Guar antee, Assured Guaranty, the Majority Prepa Ad Hoc Group, and the PREPA Ad Hoc Group hold 90% of PREPA’s bonds, which, according to a federal Appeals Court ruling, are secured by PREPA’s net revenues. The bondholders not ed that if PREPA’s generation is systematically inadequate to meet demand, PREPA will forgo revenues on power that could have been sold to customers but was not.

They said PREPA’s inefficient generation mix may limit system funding and impact revenues. If

the demand forecast is off, there may be too little or too much generation capacity. Bondholders said they can contribute IRP expertise without causing delays to the process.

Rolando Emmanuelli, a lawyer, noted that bondholders oppose using revenues for capital expenditures because of an ongoing legal dis pute in PREPA’s bankruptcy over whether those

revenues qualify as current expenses.

“If CAPEX [capital expenditure] is ruled as current expenses, all revenues could be spent on improvements, and bondholders cannot collect,” he said in a radio interview. “This is for the judge to decide.”

The bondholders, creditors with claims against the debtor, are also intervening in the

rate case before the PREB and seeking to have the federal bankruptcy case judge, Laura Taylor Swain, lift the automatic stay and dismiss the case.

Meanwhile, Caribbean Transmission Devel opment Co. LLC (CTDCo), a project developer proposing a 700 megawatt subsea transmission line between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, has requested to intervene in the on going IRP review, thereby positioning itself as an additional influential stakeholder as the proceed ing rapidly expands in scope and complexity.

The firm contends that its proposed Project Hostos received in February a presidential per mit to work on the project with the Dominican Republic. However, LUMA Energy, the operator of PREPA’s transmission and distribution system, placed the project in a Plan K scenario, which is not LUMA Energy’s favored one for the IRP.

The firm said LUMA Energy has provided inaccurate information about the project, which may affect the public and private financial mar kets’ perception of it.

CTDCo’s intervention request comes as Puerto Rico’s grid faces scrutiny for reliability, underinvestment and slow renewable adoption. Transmission-focused companies see an oppor tunity for large-scale modernization as federal funding and regulatory reforms alter the market.

The PREB has yet to decide on the interven tion requests.

DNER official is no-show at Senate hearing on Carolina landfill

The Senate Tourism, Natural Resources and Environmental Committee continued its investigation on Wednesday under Senate Resolution 2 regarding the expansion and operation of the Carolina Autonomous Municipality landfill, marked by the non-ap pearance of attorney Luis González Ortiz, examining officer of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER), who had been summoned as the sole witness for the hearing.

Sen. Marissa “Marissita” Jiménez Santoni, the committee chairwoman, noted that González Ortiz was initially summoned on March 20 through the sergeant-at-arms and, after what she described as a hostile attitude and refusal to answer questions, a personal summons was issued for him to appear Wednesday morning. However, the witness, who had previously been identified as a relative of Gov. Jenniffer González Colón, did not attend the hearing. “This morning we are addressing Senate Res olution number 2 […] and Mr. Luis González

Ortiz was summoned for this hearing. […]

He has not appeared,” Jiménez said. “Given his hostile attitude and refusal to answer the committee’s questions, he was personally summoned […] and he did not appear. In accordance with the provisions of the Political Code, it is ordered that the matter be referred to the court […] and that the corresponding contempt of court be requested.”

Sen. Ángel Toledo López said the committee had to resort to the court to ensure the appear ance of the witness, obtaining a court order that was later confirmed by the Court of Appeals.

“The court issued an order [and] the Court of Appeals upheld the ruling […] leaving in effect the hearing we are holding today,” Toledo stated. “Despite that, the attorney decided not to appear.”

Toledo requested that the case be brought before the court again so that the witness is held in contempt, the corresponding sanctions are imposed, and he is ordered to appear and answer the committee’s questions. Since the beginning of the investigation, the committee has focused its efforts on evaluating

the permitting process and the potential envi ronmental and public health impacts associat ed with the expansion of the landfill operated by the Autonomous Municipality of Carolina. The inquiry stems from concerns regarding the use of ecologically sensitive lands, including protected areas, archaeological zones and sites situated atop aquifers.

Sen. Eliezer Molina Pérez similarly expressed concern about the decisions made in the case and urged the agencies to be held accountable.

“The decisions he [González Ortiz] has made regarding this particular case are extremely worrying,” he said. “[…] The time has come for the agencies here to answer for the decisions they make.”

A Department of Natural and Environmental Resources official who had been summoned as the sole witness for a hearing before the Senate Tourism, Natural Resources and Environmental Committee failed to appear on Wednesday morning. The hearing was to be part of the panel’s investigation into the permitting process and the potential environmental and public health impacts associated with the expansion of the landfill operated by the Municipality of Carolina.

Humacao school gets a new chemistry building

Secretary of State Rosachely Rivera Santana recently inaugurated the first of several reconstruction projects managed by Colegio San Antonio Abad in Humacao, in collaboration with the Central Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience (COR3) with a total allocation of $10.5 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

As part of the efforts, the institution completed the total reconstruction of the chemistry classroom and lab, as well as other areas, with an investment of $2.7 million from the funds. The project will directly benefit the entire school community.

Rivera Santana stressed that not only was a new facility built, but an essential space was constructed to provide better education.

“This achievement also demonstrates that reconstruction in Puerto Rico is indeed possible when there is planning, coordination, and political will,” the secretary of state said. “Under the

Working Capital Advance program, COR3 has already authorized an additional disbursement of $2.6 million for the institution to continue working on its upcoming projects. This means that this effort does not end today; on the contrary, today we see the visible beginning of a broader transformation.”

The project included the demolition of the previous structure and the construction of a new one-level building, made of reinforced concrete, with an approximate area of 3,500 square feet.

COR3 Executive Director Eduardo Soria Rivera emphasized the importance of the educational impact of the initiatives.

“Each completed project represents an additional step in the reconstruction process,” he said. “This investment strengthens the educational environment and guarantees modern and safe facilities for the academic development of students.”

The new building features a classroom for teaching chemistry, a storage area, renovated furniture, and updated laboratory equipment.

Governor distances herself from dismissals of chancellors at UPR

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón stated on Wednesday that she does not intervene in decisions made by the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) regarding its chancellors, following questions concerning recent departures at several campuses within the university system.

“No, I read about it just like you did. Those are decisions made by the university,” González Colón told members of the press. “I do not intervene in that. I am unaware of what the plan is -- right? -- or what developments are going to take place at the university.”

The governor’s reaction came after she was asked about allegations that UPR President Zayira Jordán Conde had gathered several chancellors and subsequently presented them with letters of resignation for their signature.

González Colón declined to speculate on what the next step would be within the UPR, maintaining that she is unaware of the plan to be implemented at the institution. Her response was limited to distancing herself from the decisions adopted by the university leadership.

The governor offered no further comments regarding administrative management at the campuses or concerning potential new appointments. She also made it clear that the process falls exclusively within the purview of the UPR.

Ex-Rep. Matos García opposes gaming sector bill in Senate

Cites risks to casino industry, police pensions

Former House District 40 (Carolina) representative and past chair of the House Tourism Committee Ángel Matos García voiced strenuous opposition on Wednesday to Senate Bill 960, introduced by Sen. Rosana Soto Aguiló. He warned that the measure threatens the economic stability of Puerto Rico’s gaming and casino industry and could ultimately reduce police pensions.

Senate Bill 960 seeks to broaden and ease regulations on authorized gaming modalities across the island. The proposal includes expanding licenses and creating new opportunities for electronic gaming operations and other digital platforms. According to its sponsor, the bill aims to increase government revenue and modernize Puerto Rico’s entertainment offerings. However, critics argue that the local market is already showing

signs of saturation.

Matos García said the proposal overlooks the economic realities of the sector and the limited size of Puerto Rico’s market.

“Puerto Rico does not have the population or the tourist flow to sustain an indiscriminate expansion of gaming,” he said. “This bill starts from a false premise -- that more machines and more licenses automatically mean more revenue -- when experience shows us the opposite.”

The former legislator emphasized that a proliferation of new licenses and gaming formats could further fragment an already limited revenue pool, impacting traditional casinos in particular. Those establishments, he noted, remain a significant source of employment and tourism activity.

“What this measure proposes is dividing the same amount of money among more operators,” Matos García said. “That’s not economic growth; that’s revenue dilution and, eventually, losses.”

He also warned of the bill’s potential impact on the tourism

industry, stressing the historical role casinos have played as anchors for Puerto Rico’s hotel sector.

“Casinos in Puerto Rico not only generate income but are an essential component of the tourist experience,” the former lawmaker said. “Weakening that industry through an oversupply of gaming threatens jobs, investment, and the island’s competitiveness as a destination.”

Matos García urged the Legislature to conduct a more rigorous economic evaluation of the proposal and to consider market studies before approving any further expansion.

“Before authorizing more gaming options that put police pensions at risk, the government must ask whether the market can sustain them,” he said. “Today the answer is clear: it cannot. If approved, this bill will cause the industry to lose money, not gain it.”

Matos García reiterated his willingness to collaborate on alternatives that strengthen the gaming sector without jeopardizing its long-term viability.

Republicans offer to fund Homeland Security without ICE enforcement

Less than 24 hours after President Donald Trump threw cold water on their efforts to cut a deal to reopen the Department of Homeland Security, Senate Republicans intensified their bid earlier this week to find an off-ramp to the impasse amid staggeringly long lines at airports across the country.

Under a proposal they sent to Democrats on Tuesday afternoon, Congress would fund all of the department except for parts of Immigration and Customs Enforcement involved in the administration’s deportation crackdown, according to multiple people familiar with the plan. It was not clear what, if any, enforcement limits were included, or if Democrats, who have insisted on reining in federal immigration agents’ tactics, would go along with it.

Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., the majority leader, said that the proposal would fund 94% of the Department of Homeland Security. But he suggested that the limits that Democrats have demanded, which include barring immigration agents from wearing masks and requiring that they seek judicial warrants to enter private homes and businesses, would not be included because the bill would not fund ICE’s immigration enforcement operations.

“A lot of the reforms are contingent on funding for ICE,” Thune said. He added, “If you’re not going to have funding, I don’t know how all of a sudden now you can demand reforms.”

A spokesperson for Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., the minority leader, said he had made it clear to his members and to Republicans that only removing the ICE enforcement money without any other changes would not be enough to earn the support of his members.

The proposal has not changed since the weekend, when Trump publicly rejected any spending deal and said he would not accept one unless the Senate delivered him the strict voter ID bill, paired with restrictions on transgender athletes and children, that the chamber is now considering.

At the White House on Tuesday, Trump did not endorse the idea, saying that he wanted to take a “good, hard look” at the deal and “support Republicans,” but sounding cool to any compromise with Democrats.

“Any deal they make, I’m pretty much not happy with,” the president said of the GOP.

Several Republican senators closely aligned with Trump pitched him on the proposal in a meeting Monday night at the

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.)

White House. They said they would work on a separate bill to address election security and ICE funding, which they would seek to push through without Democratic support using a special process called budget reconciliation that is not subject to a filibuster, according to two of the people, who were granted anonymity to discuss the negotiations. (Because Republicans gave ICE a vast windfall as part of Trump’s sweeping domestic policy law last year, the agency has continued to operate during the shutdown.)

After the meeting, Senate Republicans sounded sanguine about the prospects of a deal, even as some on the hard right raised alarm about it. Thune said Tuesday that he believed those who had met with Trump “made a compelling case and argument for why this is a big win.”

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, chair of the Appropriations

Committee, which oversees spending bills, said that she had grown “more optimistic that by the end of the week we will fund the Department of Homeland Security.”

Lawmakers cautioned that conversations were continuing, and the plan under discussion would face significant hurdles. But it had the potential to end a stalemate that has dragged on for nearly a month and has led to chaos at U.S. airports, giving senators an escape hatch before a scheduled two-week recess.

To overcome the 60-vote threshold required to advance most legislation, the funding bill would require some Democratic buy-in. So far, Democrats have been resolutely opposed to legislation that does not contain new guardrails on immigration enforcement efforts, a demand that hardened after federal agents killed two American citizens in Minneapolis in January.

Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, who caucuses with Democrats and was part of bipartisan talks last week, said Monday that he needed to see the legislative text and how ICE’s detention and deportation operations were carved out of it. Republicans said they expected to send legislative text to Democrats on Tuesday afternoon.

“I want to see exactly what that means and how it’s — what the language is,” King said. “And there may be some negotiation on exactly how to define that, but I’m just waiting. As I say, the first step is to see the actual deal.”

Any separate ICE bill passed under reconciliation would also require near-unanimous Republican support, and lawmakers in both the House and Senate have been skeptical that the party could unite behind legislation, particularly in an election year.

And that legislation would have to fit within the strict rules tied to the reconciliation process, which can only be used to pass provisions that make direct changes to government spending or revenues. It was not clear how the voter ID legislation, which would also require proof of citizenship when registering to vote, or limits on transgender people could qualify.

The House Freedom Caucus, an ultraconservative group, called the Senate plan “failure theater,” warning in a social media post that it was unlikely to succeed in pushing through Trump’s election measures, which he has called a top priority.

“It’s hard to imagine how the SAVE America Act could be passed through reconciliation,” Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, the Republican sponsor of the measure, said in a post on the social platform X. “And by ‘hard’ I mean ‘essentially impossible.’”

Florida Democrats win special election in Mar-a-Lago’s district

Democrats on Tuesday flipped a Florida legislative district that includes President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, pulling off another upset in a state House election but this time one with obvious symbolic power.

Emily Gregory, a first-time candidate with a public health background, became the latest Democrat to win a special election

and claim a statehouse seat previously held by a Republican.

Across the state, another Democrat, Brian Nathan, a Navy veteran and Electrical Workers union leader, was leading a tight West Tampa race for a state Senate seat vacated by Florida’s newly appointed lieutenant governor.

Since the 2024 presidential election, Democrats have flipped more than two dozen seats in Republican or battleground states — including ones in Arkansas and New Hampshire ear-

lier this month — while Republicans have not captured any Democratic seats.

Republican strategists have framed the losses as a natural regression following big gains in 2024 in Washington, D.C., and in state capitals across the country.

But Democrats see in the results a mounting anger in the electorate over Trump that could carry through November and

What we know about the floods in Hawaii

Aresident in Oahu evacuated her home in knee-high water, leaving her husband’s ashes behind. Seventy people, in a group that included children, were surrounded by water and stranded at a campsite. Others found that their cars had been submerged and their homes swept away.

These are just some of the anecdotes that residents and officials from Hawaii have shared over the past week as a series of storms has pounded the islands, causing severe flooding. No deaths were reported, but about 200 people were rescued, thousands more were evacuated, and at least hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of damage was sustained.

Here’s what else to know about the floods.

They were caused by storms called Kona lows.

The flooding was largely caused by back-toback storms that forecasters call Kona lows — a type of seasonal storm not uncommon during Hawaii’s rainy season from November to April. Such storms tend to bring more precipitation and move more slowly, leading to heavy rain over the same location for extended periods.

The first storm struck Hawaii on March 10, when multiple inches of rain were received across the islands.

The intense rainfall over just a few weeks, which experts said was one of the rainiest periods Hawaii had seen recently, saturated ground on parts of the islands, causing additional rain to flood streets.

The National Weather Service is still assessing totals, but many parts of Hawaii received record amounts of rainfall over the past few weeks.

Hundreds needed to be rescued, and it could have been worse.

Oahu, Hawaii’s most populous island and home to its state capital, saw severe rainfall on Friday that led to the catastrophic flooding. Meteorologists with

the weather service in Honolulu said Oahu received 10 to 14 inches of rain overnight from Thursday into Friday, which led to the devastation, with more rainfall into the weekend.

There were no recorded fatalities, but emergency responders, including airmen and high-water vehicle teams deployed by the National Guard, rescued around 200 people. Over 5,000 people had been evacuated from Oahu’s North Shore, one of the hardest-hit areas.

The rainfall had initially led state officials to declare a 120-year-old dam in the Wahiawa Reservoir in northern Oahu at “imminent risk of failure.” By Friday evening, water levels had reduced, and a spokesperson for the company that owns the dam said it was operating as designed with “no indications of damage.” Regulators had classified the dam as having a high hazard potential, meaning failure would have most likely

resulted in loss of life.

Residents described seeing cars overturned, trucks washed downstream and mud filling rooms in their homes.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said he anticipated that storm damage to public and private property across the islands could cost more than $1 billion. Hawaii Farmers Union United, an advocacy group, said farms were particularly hard hit, estimating damage to crops and infrastructure at around $7 million.

On Tuesday, Green announced that he had submitted a request to President Donald Trump for a major disaster declaration to support statewide recovery efforts.

Hawaii hasn’t seen flooding like this since 2004. Green said the flooding across the islands was the worst the state had seen in 20 years.

Hawaii experienced significant flooding damage two decades ago, when intense rainfall in October 2004 caused the Manoa Stream on the southern part of Oahu to overflow, resulting in flooding through residential areas and the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Florida Democrats win special election...

the midterm elections. Gregory’s victory brought the trend into Trump’s backyard, in a state that has trended heavily Republican since its days as a perennial battleground.

“Floridians are tired of the chaos, corruption, and sky high prices on everything from groceries, to gas, and health care,” Nikki Fried, the chair of the Florida Democratic Party, said in a statement. “They are voting for trusted leaders like Emily to steady the ship and return common sense, people-centered solutions back to our communities.”

A Democratic presidential candidate has not won Florida’s electoral votes since 2012, but this year, Florida has not been immune from the Democratic surge. Boca Raton, about 30 miles down the Atlantic coast from Palm Beach, elected its first Democratic mayor in 45 years earlier this month. That margin was narrow, but Miami voters in December overwhelmingly

elected their first Democratic mayor in 30 years.

Palm Beach County, where Gregory scored her victory, used to be a Democratic stronghold, but Republicans have made major inroads in recent federal and local elections. The seat that Gregory won — District 87, along coastal Palm Beach County — had been held by state Rep. Mike Caruso, a Republican, who won by 19 percentage points in 2024.

Caruso resigned in August after being appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis as county clerk, prompting Tuesday’s special election. Trump voted by mail in the race earlier this month, despite his ongoing national efforts to end vote by mail.

Gregory, 40, centered her campaign on the Democrats’ favorite word in the 2026 cycle, affordability, and zeroed in on housing and health care. She also highlighted her background as a mother of three, military spouse and small-business owner. Her opponent, Jon Maples, 43, a financial planner and former council member in Lake Clarke Shores, billed himself as a “conservative outsider” and “America First patriot.” Trump promoted his candidacy a few days ago at a Palm Beach Republican event, as Maples was facing a formal complaint that

There were no deaths or injuries reported in that flood. Still, damages to the library and other buildings on campus, as well as over 100 homes in the area, were estimated at around $85 million.

The storm moved south over the weekend.

Over the weekend, the storm inched over to Maui, which had already sustained damage earlier in the month. Flash flood warnings and evacuation orders were issued on the island, and flooding was reported. On Monday, there were also reports of flash flooding in Manoa, a southern portion of the island of Oahu, as well as on the Big Island.

Local news outlets reporting on the flooding in Manoa described roads and walkways that turned into rivers and streams. The weather service said water levels were at least 2 feet high, with parked cars being “inundated.”

Rain continued to pour over Maui through Tuesday, with flood watches in effect for Maui and the Big Island through 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The storm system was expected to leave the area by Tuesday night.

he did not live in the district.

In West Tampa, Nathan was trying to overcome a financial disadvantage and a lack of name recognition in his upset bid against former state Rep. Josie Tomkow, a Republican, to fill a state senate seat vacated when Jay Collins, a Republican, was appointed lieutenant governor.

Republicans did win a special election Tuesday for a House seat to replace Tomkow, however, as Hilary Holley easily defeated Edwin Perez, a Democrat, to represent a district between Tampa and Orlando.

Beyond the symbolism, Gregory’s victory is not going to change the balance of power in a state legislature where Republicans hold a supermajority. Still, her term, which runs through the end of the year, promises to be eventful. Legislators still need to pass a budget before the July 1 deadline. DeSantis has also called for a special session in April to redraw Florida’s congressional map, in time for the 2026 midterms.

Gregory is also expected to run again in the November general election for a full two-year term. A rematch against Maples is possible.

When a narcissist goes to war

If you can set aside both the unconstitutionality and the immorality of President Donald Trump’s unprovoked war on Iran and focus on the operation itself, it is hard not to be bewildered by the utter lack of real planning, or even basic strategic thinking, that has gone into it.

Neither Trump nor his aides, according to recent reporting, planned for Iran to target shipping and close the Strait of Hormuz. They also do not seem to have planned for serious and sustained retaliation against America’s Persian Gulf state allies. They did not plan for an energy crisis and the potential disruption to the global economy, and they did not plan for America’s European allies to, by and large, reject their call for support.

To read about the administration’s decision-making process is to learn that it did not really plan for or expect much in the way of anything that now defines the war. This raises two obvious questions: What did they plan for? And what exactly did they expect to happen?

It appears that both the president and the White House expected token resistance, followed by the collapse of the Iranian regime, the installation of a pro-American government — or at least one we could tolerate — and a return to the status quo ante: a replay, in essence, of the president’s first intervention of the year, in Venezuela. Now that this replay fantasy has collided with a more complex, indeterminate and difficult reality, Trump is unable to explain his objectives or even give the country a sense of when the war might end. He told Fox News radio that he would “feel it in my bones.” Let’s just say that that is a far cry from traditional political leadership during wartime. If anything, Trump is caught in a classic escalation spiral. When one approach fails, in this case the initial airstrikes, he moves to the next. When that fails, he bids higher. And when escalation still doesn’t produce the desired result — when he faces the choice between accepting defeat or stalemate or going even further — he goes further. Which is how we have arrived closer and closer to the use of ground troops: Thousands of Marines — and now paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne — are headed to the Middle East as Trump weighs a new offensive tied to either the Strait of Hormuz or Iranian

public stage, we have seen little to no evidence that he believes in the existence of other minds.

Every presidential administration takes on the character of its principal, and this one is no different. Like Trump, the White House does not in fact seem to understand that other people have agency too. It sees itself the same way the president sees himself: as the protagonist of the universe, with everyone else acting either as a supporting character or a nonplayable one — extras with no will of their own.

And so, whenever other people do act of their own accord, both the president and his administration find themselves flat-footed. For their opponents, this represents an opportunity.

nuclear materials.

It should be said, here, that at no point has Congress either authorized this war or provided funding for ground operations. For his part, the president is either bragging about an incoming deal — “They’re gonna make a deal,” he said of the Iranian leadership on Tuesday — or threatening attacks on Iran’s civilian infrastructure. “If I want to take down that power plant, that very big powerful power plant, they can’t do a thing about it,” Trump said during the same news conference.

What’s striking is how familiar this pattern feels. The administration did not expect the public to be repelled by DOGE. It did not expect outrage over the treatment of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. It did not expect Democrats to respond to threats of partisan gerrymandering with their own push to wring as many Democratic seats as possible out of so-called blue states. The administration certainly did not expect the mass mobilizations against the deployment of National Guard troops and the use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection as a roving paramilitary force. Minnesota, in particular, appears to have caught them entirely off guard — a tendency toward docility, it seems, is their baseline assumption about everyone they oppose.

Which raises another key question: Why can’t the White House see what others could easily predict? None of this should have been a surprise. Anyone capable of thinking through the actions of other people — of imagining their perspectives and of recognizing that they have agency — should have been able to anticipate these outcomes and plan accordingly. And in the case of the war in Iran, the president ignored counsel that warned of something like the current situation.

This gets to the real problem. Trump is famously indifferent to the concerns of those around him. He is a consummate narcissist, and he is, without question, the most solipsistic person ever to occupy the Oval Office. Over his decades on the

The White House’s inability to grasp the agency of others — its apparent lack of a theory of mind for everyone outside its walls — gives Democrats, especially, a distinct advantage. They can seize the initiative, knowing the president will struggle to respond in a constructive way. We have already seen this with the current partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, where Trump has thus far refused to budge, as if his stubborn intransigence will bend the world to his desires. The result has been chaos in the nation’s airports and a decline in the president’s standing with the American public. By virtue of his position, Trump is a dangerous figure. But he is also a weak and deeply unpopular president. The upshot of his impenetrable egotism, for his opponents, is that there are plenty of opportunities to make him weaker and even more unpopular. For as much as he is in love with violence — for as much as he clearly wants to terrorize the nation into submission — he is also cursed with a kind of blindness. He cannot see that his opposition is real. He cannot see that it can act.

Oregon choir brings love & harmony to island

There is a small city in the northwestern state of Oregon where it rains all the time. And in that small city, almost everyone has a vein of musical talent.

Precipitation and harmonization are two facts of life that clarinetist Kathleen Jones knows well. She had many a play date or shopping spree ruined by a downpour when she was growing up in the aforementioned town, Eugene, where both of her parents were music teachers and two of her sisters were musicians.

She survived the rain and was voted outstanding student of her high school graduating class in 1970.

Anyone who follows classical music in Puerto Rico knows Jones has been a major influence on the island’s musical growth for the last half century, having taught hundreds of clarinetists, whom she has proudly showcased around the world.

In a few days, Sanjuaneros can learn something else about the faraway damp city: it has a celebrated 51-year-old community choir, now on tour in Puerto Rico. On Friday, the Eugene Concert Choir will join San Juan’s equally celebrated (if a bit

soul, especially when it is in love. Blending choral tradition with swing and jazz, the work was first performed on Valentine’s Day this year.

The 34-member touring group from Oregon performed earlier this week at Teatro Yagüez in Mayagüez and in Ponce at Pontificia Catholic University. They also took some time for sightseeing at the Ponce Art Museum and other island attractions.

The event, entitled “Musica de Amor/ Music of Love,” will feature a contemporary repertoire in English and Spanish. The two choirs will perform separately and combined.

Orfeón San Juan Bautista has been growing in accomplishment and popularity since it was founded 25 years ago. It is directed by professor/composer Guarionex Morales Matos and Daniel Alejandro Tapia, who is also the artistic and musical director.

A highlight of the evening will be the joint presentation by both choruses of a work by Morales Matos commissioned by the Eugene choir as part of its tour. The concert choir is a resident company at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene.

The concert will include works by Samuel Barber and other contemporary composers. Also on the program will be show tunes and romantic songs such as “Love Will Keep Us Together” and “Taking a Chance on Love.” The local group will present Puerto Rican favorites.

While many of the choral selections will be sung a cappella, these more rhythmical selections will be accompanied by guest percussion band Tamborícua, conducted by Elia Cortés.

Union Church is located at 2310 Laurel Street in Punta Las Marías, San Juan. The concert is free but donations are welcome.

Wall Street advances as investors bet on Mideast de-escalation

chief investment officer at Cetera Investment Management.

Wall Street’s main indexes closed higher on Wednesday as oil prices fell while Iran reviewed a U.S. proposal to end the war in the Middle East, feeding investor hopes for de-escalation in the fourth week of a war that has disrupted global energy flows and stoked inflation concerns.

While Abbas Araqchi, Iran’s foreign minister, said that authorities were reviewing the U.S. proposals, he added that Tehran has no intention to hold talks with Washington. Initially, Iran said it considered U.S. proposals delivered by Pakistan as excessive and demanded sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

But until there is clarity on when the war might end, Goldman said he expects “volatility to remain elevated given the impact of higher oil prices on inflation.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 305.43 points, or 0.66%, to 46,429.49, the S&P 500 gained 35.53 points, or 0.54%, to 6,591.90 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 167.93 points, or 0.77%, to 21,929.83.

During Wednesday’s session, energy was the weakest of the S&P 500’s 11 major industry sectors, falling 0.5%. The strongest sector gainers were materials, up 2%, and consumer discretionary, which added 1.2%.

With oil prices settling down more than 2%, shares in companies that depend heavily on fuel were rallying. Cruise operator Norwegian Cruise Line closed up 2.8% while the S&P Composite 1500 Passenger Airlines index rose 1%.

The mixed messages led to choppy trading. Michael James, equity sales trader at Rosenblatt Securities, said: “There are a lot of frayed nerves out there with sentiment and headlines driving a lot of the market action.”

Any signs of communication between the countries provided some hope for investors, however, following signals that Washington has been seeking a ceasefire and restoration of shipping through the crucial Strait of Hormuz, which about 20% of global oil shipments pass through.

“There is optimism that the proposal and counter-proposal are setting the stage for more negotiations,” said Gene Goldman,

U.S.-listed shares of Arm rallied 16.4% after the company unveiled a new AI data center chip that is expected to bring billions of dollars in revenue. It was the biggest gainer in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which closed up 1.2%.

Other rallying chipmakers included Advanced Micro Devices and Intel, which both finished up more than 7%. Nvidia shares added 2%.

Destiny Tech100 surged 15% after a report that SpaceX aims to file its IPO prospectus as soon as this week. SpaceX is the fund’s largest equity holding.

Other space companies rallied in response with Rocket Lab adding 10.3% while Intuitive Machines rose 14.7% and EchoStar added 7.4%.

The oil price spike has revived inflation worries, complicating the interest-rate outlook of central banks. Markets are no longer pricing in any easing from the Federal Reserve this year, according to CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, compared with the two cuts that were expected before the war broke out.

Among other movers, U.S.-listed shares of JD.com rose 8% and Alibaba rose 3.5% after Chinese state media and the regulator urged the food-delivery platform industry to end a price war. Robinhood Markets rallied 5% after the trading platform announced a new $1.5 billion share buyback program.

On U.S. exchanges 17.07 billion shares changed hands compared with the 20.69 billion-share moving average for the last 20 sessions.

US circulates Iran peace plan while sending troops to the Middle East

Nearly a month into the war, the United States and Iran struggled to find a way to begin negotiations over peace terms Wednesday, with each insisting it had the upper hand in the conflict and that the other was desperate for a way out.

The United States circulated a 15-point peace plan, diplomats said, demanding what would amount to a complete termination of Iran’s nuclear program and sharp limits on the reach and size of their missile arsenal. It bore strong resemblance to the U.S. demands in February, during negotiations that collapsed when the United States and Israel struck Iran on Feb. 28.

But the Iranian government, in a statement issued through state television, declared it would not end the conflict unless the United States paid war reparations, and recognized “Iran’s exercise of sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz,” suggesting it would continue to decide which ships pass through the narrow strait and which remained bottled up, unable to deliver oil or fertilizer.

The messages between the two countries were being passed by Pakistan, which was trying to assemble peace talks in the capital of Islamabad, proposing dates as soon as this weekend. But neither Iran nor the United States would confirm such discussions, each wanting to avoid seeming the overeager party in a conflict where each wants to demonstrate it holds the upper hand.

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, ran through a series of military metrics to make the case that Iran’s forces have been crushed — its navy sunk, its missiles destroyed before they could be launched — and said “that’s why you are beginning to see the regime look for an exit ramp.” But she later warned that Iran’s surviving leaders will bring more destruction to the country “if they fail to understand that they have been defeated militarily.”

sion to attack the country, along with Israeli forces, she warned that “their last miscalculation cost them their senior leadership, their navy, their air force and their air defense system.” At the same time, the United States was preparing to activate 2,000 paratroopers who could be quickly deployed to the region, for possible additional military action — perhaps seizing the Kharg Island oil port, perhaps keeping the strait open — if talks never get off the ground, or fail.

Those forces may give the president more leverage in his negotiations but also leave him with the option of doubling down on military force. Their presence could also fuel Iranian resentment that Trump opened negotiations with them twice in the past eight months and then ordered the bombing of nuclear plants and the broader attack on the country.

But Iran certainly didn’t sound like a defeated regime.

While the Pentagon cites the inventory of destroyed Iranian military equipment, Iran’s surviving military leadership has found new powers of control over the 21-mile-wide strait

A missile fragment in a schoolyard

Meitar Cohen, 32, works as a teaching assistant at a school in the Peduel settlement, about 15 miles east of Tel Aviv, Israel. She has four children; Maayan, a third grader, is the only one who attends this school, called Shilat.

The family lives in a caravan near the school. But the caravan has no safe room, so they have spent several nights in the school’s shelter alongside other families, Cohen said. The school, like others across Israel, had been closed since Saturday night, when a strike hit the city of Arad.

Her children are deep sleepers, Cohen said, and she prefers the difficulties of the shelter to the risk that an airraid siren might not wake them.

Phone warnings woke the families in the shelter around

midnight, Cohen said. Then a siren sounded. One of Maayan’s brothers ran to close the shelter door, and they heard a loud explosion soon afterward.

Later, when Cohen was texted an image of the missile fragment, she thought it was generated by artificial intelligence. But Maayan recognized the site immediately and became very frightened, Cohen said.

After making sure it was safe outside, Cohen said, she let Maayan and some friends go and look at the fragment. She wanted them to understand what had happened, rather than let their imaginations inflate their fears. That is when this photograph was taken.

and was boasting about them. Even without traditional military arms, former Secretary of State Antony Blinken told an audience at the Harvard Kennedy School on Tuesday night that Iran has the “ability to leverage the Straight of Hormuz in ways that are profoundly disruptive and give it an asymmetric advantage in the region and indeed around the world.” It will now have little interest in giving that up.

Diplomats in the Persian Gulf and South Asia said they expected Iran to bounce between defiance and some opening to eventual talks with the United States. They said Iranian officials wanted to conduct that conversation with Vice President JD Vance, who has made no secret of his skepticism about lengthy U.S. ventures abroad.

White House officials, including Leavitt, would not discuss whether Vance would travel to Islamabad to meet a senior Iranian official — likely Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister — but the demands issued by Iran seemed likely to, at a minimum, slow that prospect.

Leavitt insisted that “productive” talks were underway but would give no details, or say who was involved.

Various versions of the 15-point plan were circulating in Washington and other capitals, with some variation on details. But the core of the U.S. proposal was exactly what Washington demanded before the war began: An end to all enrichment of uranium and the movement of the existing stockpiles of nuclear fuel out of the country, starting with a 970-pound cache of near bomb-grade uranium, enriched to 60% purity. The document also calls for free passage in the strait.

But it makes no mention of regime change in Iran, of protection for protesters or for the holding of real elections in coming months or years. Trump’s military buildup near Iran began after Iran killed thousands of anti-government protesters in January, and the president declared “help is on its way!” But if he signs an agreement with no protections for them, it could be seen as an abandonment of his promise to the Iranian people, who on Feb. 28 he urged to rise up and overthrow their government when the fighting ends.

According to Jeffrey Lewis, a nuclear nonproliferation expert at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies, the photo shows the remnants of an Iranian Ghadr or Emad ballistic missile. Those are variants of the Shahab-3, an Iranian weapon based on a North Korean mediumrange missile.

After standing up to Trump over Greenland, Denmark’s prime minister leads in election

The center-left party of Mette Frederiksen, Denmark’s prime minister, was leading in parliamentary elections on Tuesday but fell far short of a majority, potentially setting her up for a grueling battle to form a new government.

With all the ballots counted, Frederiksen’s Social Democrats came out ahead but won less than one-quarter of the vote in a highly fractured political field. The result was about what had been expected, and analysts said it left her in the best position to try to forge a new governing coalition.

But it was still her party’s worst performance in more than 100 years, according to Danish media outlets, and indicated that the woman who gained prominence for standing up to President Donald Trump over Greenland may now have to wage political battles closer to home.

Addressing supporters hours after the vote, Frederiksen said she was “disappointed that we did not receive more votes. I had hoped for a better result.”

Frederiksen has been the dominant force in Danish politics — a third term could make her Denmark’s longest-serving leader since World War II. After so many years on the scene, she is vulnerable to voter fatigue, and the results signaled that a new term could prove challenging.

“Voters are quite simply tired of Mette Frederiksen,” said Johannes Andersen, a political scientist at Aalborg University. “The way she says she is not afraid to take power or set directions for how people should behave — that is not many voters’ cup of tea.”

“That’s something other parties, especially on the extremes, have been playing to and

are capitalizing on,” he added. “It reflects a moment of frustration.”

In her postelection comments, the prime minister acknowledged that her coalition government “was never popular.” But, she added, “I believe it served the country and benefited Denmark in a turbulent time.”

It was still mathematically possible for a band of other parties, possibly from the right, to scrape together enough support to form a government without her. But analysts said that seemed unlikely for now and that Frederiksen may look to left-leaning parties to hammer out a new coalition over the next several weeks.

Bent Winther, one of Denmark’s leading political analysts, said in an interview that the results were “a major setback” for the prime

minister’s party. “But given how parliament is likely to be composed,” Winther said, “it’s very difficult to see a government without her.”

Despite the uncertainty of coalition negotiations ahead, Frederiksen struck a note of resolve. “Denmark needs a stable government and a competent government,” she said. “We are ready to take the lead.”

Frederiksen, 48, campaigned as an exemplar of the new left: hawkish on foreign policy, tough on immigrants, but big on social welfare.

She earned a lot of points back home for taking on Trump, who was insisting on snatching Greenland, an enormous Arctic island that has been part of Denmark for more than 300 years. She called in European allies to back her up, and the Danish military even laid plans to blow up airfields in Greenland to prevent U.S. troops from landing.

But it was domestic issues that voters seemed most concerned about, according to polls, and Frederiksen’s centrist flexibility could not satisfy everyone.

Environmental matters and the question of how strictly to regulate Danish farmers was one big issue. Another has been a potential wealth tax that the heads of Lego and many other Danish companies opposed and which detractors called a “jealousy tax.” Frederiksen and the left-leaning parties supported it; the right did not.

Frederiksen has been steeped in working class values from the beginning. Her father was a union leader, and she grew up in Aalborg, a factory town in the Jutland region near Denmark’s northern tip.

Friends back home remember her being strident about her political opinions since she was young. In high school, she was punched in the face by a skinhead for standing up for

immigrant children.

She entered parliament at 24, going on to become Denmark’s youngest prime minister at 41. Her tenure has been shaped by crisis — from the COVID-19 pandemic to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — as well as by her increasingly acrimonious clashes with Trump.

In more recent years, she’s demonstrated how she can form alliances with politicians of different stripes, and analysts say her government’s harsh rules on asylum-seekers are markedly different from what she believed in when she was young.

She will need the help of her foreign minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, the leader of a more moderate political party, which is actually called The Moderates.

A former prime minister, Rasmussen is widely seen as likable and reliable and the ultimate swing vote. His party won about 8% of the vote, but its support will be key to forming a majority in parliament.

Parties on the extreme left and right also performed relatively well, giving them a potential role in forming the next coalition.

Winther, the political analyst, said Frederiksen will likely have to make difficult concessions to politicians either on the right or the left to win their support.

“This could take time,” he said. “Possibly weeks, even months.”

Her party tried to put the best face on the results.

“I am satisfied that we remain Denmark’s largest party,” said Christian Rabjerg Madsen, a spokesperson for the Social Democrats. “Now the task is to see whether we can negotiate a government — one that is operational and acts decisively — and move Denmark in a more just direction.”

High oil and gas prices could outlast Trump’s war with Iran

As the war with Iran began to send oil and gas prices soaring around the world, President Donald Trump shrugged off the fallout as a temporary setback for the U.S. economy.

“When this is over,” he told reporters this month, “oil prices are going to go down very, very rapidly.”

In the end, it may not be so simple. Even if Trump were to broker an end to hostilities with Iran before his new, self-imposed Friday deadline, it may still be weeks, if not months, before American families and businesses see a true break in their spiraling energy

costs, economists and industry executives say.

An end to the war would abate a geopolitical crisis and most likely help to reopen clogged shipping lanes in the Middle East, nudging down oil and gas prices from their recent highs. But any relief would arrive gradually for most consumers — and probably not fast enough to undo the damage to the U.S. economy.

By midday Tuesday, the markets seemed downbeat about the odds of a swift and easy resolution to the war. The price of a barrel of Brent crude, the international benchmark, hovered around $100, up nearly 40% since the war started. An average gallon of gasoline also topped $3.97 nationally, according to AAA motor club, which reflected a roughly $1 jump from a month ago.

Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody’s Analytics, said the prospect of sustained high costs affirmed a well-worn adage in the energy industry: “Prices rise like a rocket, fall like a feather.”

If the war were to end soon, he predicted that it would still take about six to eight weeks for oil production and shipments to normalize. At that point, oil could settle around $80 per barrel of Brent crude, higher than before the bombing began. Prices at the pump would probably fall slowly, too.

The exact timeline will depend on many factors, including the extent of the damage to energy infrastructure in the Middle East and the fate of the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil and gas thoroughfare that has been all but closed for weeks. The trajectory for prices will also vary by fuel type: The war has strained the global supply of diesel and jet fuel, in particular, meaning those prices could stay higher for a longer period.

Such spikes tend to ripple across the economy in myriad, lasting ways. Groceries could become more expensive because of higher shipping costs, for example, while airfares in the summer travel season similarly could rise. In an early, ominous sign, the top executive of United Airlines warned Bloomberg TV on Tuesday that it could raise ticket prices by 20% if the war with Iran continued to bog down jet fuel.

“We don’t have any idea where the price is going to go,” said Mike Sommers, CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, which represents the oil industry. “We don’t know what the condition of the assets are going to be. We don’t know how long it’s going to take us to get the production that’s come offline, how long that’s going take to get back up and going.”

Asked about the administration’s economic projections, Taylor Rogers, a White House

New York Times)

spokesperson, maintained in a statement that prices would drop “rapidly” once the war concluded.

“President Trump has been right about everything, and he will be right again when these short-term disruptions are past us,” she said.

The ever-shifting economic variables only add to the stakes for Trump, as the U.S.-led war with Iran now stretches into its fourth week. Even as experts continue to raise alarm about the consequences of a protracted conflict, the president has maintained that his war is worth the cost — and will yield substantial benefit by delivering a more stable Middle East.

“Our economy was fantastic,” Trump said Monday, as he sought to make the case for why he had to “stop and make a little journey into the Middle East and eliminate a big problem.”

In fact, the U.S. economy had been showing signs of strain before the war began, evident in persistently high consumer prices and a recent rise in the nation’s unemployment rate. Those stresses had helped to contribute to sense of frustration among Americans, many of whom blamed Trump for their financial woes in recent polling ahead of the midterm elections.

Many analysts have warned that the nation’s trajectory could worsen considerably if the Iran war continues and oil prices stay sky high into next month or beyond, raising the risks that the United States could slip into a recession.

But an early glimmer of relief arrived Monday, after Trump said he would suspend his threat to escalate the bombing — by attacking Iranian energy facilities — so that the two sides could begin early discussions about an end to the conflict.

Within hours, however, leaders in Washington and Tehran, the capital, offered competing assessments about the scope of the negotiations and their progress. That discrepancy underscored a hard truth: While the United States and Israel may have started the war, all of the countries would have to agree to end the fighting if they hoped to bring calm to energy and financial markets around the world.

Once the Strait of Hormuz is opened, the traffic may not return immediately, and the risk of traversing a recent war zone may keep prices elevated for some time, analysts say. It may also take time to restart energy production in countries including Saudi Arabia, which have halted some operations in recent weeks as storage tanks have filled up in the face of drone attacks and mounting security risks.

“How quickly that production can actually come back online is an uncertainty that we’re going to have to deal with as we go forward,” Mike Wirth, CEO of Chevron, said Monday at an energy conference in Houston, CERAWeek by S&P Global. “It’s going to take some time to come out of this.”

Leonas win in Manatí, complicating matters for Atenienses in LVSF quarterfinals

The Leonas of Ponce stole a road victory at Juan Aubín Cruz Coliseum in Manatí in their first match of the postseason on Tuesday night, defeating the host Atenienses in four sets as the quarterfinals of the Women’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSF by its initials in Spanish) continued this week.

The outcome marked the second defeat in as many outings for the Atenienses in Section B, where the Criollas of Caguas and the Leonas are both 1-0. Those two teams will face off on Thursday as group play continues; in this stage of the postseason, each squad plays four matches in a bid to secure one of two spots in the semifinals.

With the match standing at 2-1 in sets in favor of the Leonas -- and the fourth set tied at 29 points in extra time -- the Manatí defense dropped back in anticipation of a powerful attack from American player Sherridan Atkinson coming from the back row. Atkinson capitalized on the defensive read, softened her spike, and placed the ball perfectly into Zone 6.

Ponce closed out the match on the very

next play with a block against Karla Santos. The set scores in favor of Ponce were 21-

25, 25-22, 25-22 and 31-29. Ponce’s offensive production was shared

As it turns out, James still makes his team better

His silly smile said it all.

Here was LeBron James in Year No. 23 of his pro basketball career, having just tied Robert Parish for the NBA record in games played, and he looked like a toddler whose mother just let him have the entire container of ice cream for himself.

It was a rare and revealing moment of giddiness and glee from the malleable old man, with James, 41, taking a moment to revel in the fact that he can still help flip even the heaviest and haughtiest of narratives on their proverbial heads.

“It sells papers a lot easier — and clippings and podcasts — if you say, ‘LeBron, the team is better off without him,’” James told reporters after his Los Angeles Lakers beat the Miami Heat last week. “A lot of people will try to, like, view it. So I get it.”

He took the briefest of pauses for effect, then jumped back in before a reporter’s follow-up question could steal the spotlight from his kicker.

“But they’re absolutely wrong.”

Cue the beaming smile.

As James surely agrees, it is indeed time for a reassessment

of this fascinating team. The Lakers, left for dead as title contenders by many not long ago, have officially reentered that conversation by winning 12 of their last 14 games. In this season of such entertaining parity, with the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder looking vulnerable at times after that scorching start and so many other elite teams capable of beating the best of the best on any given night, consider this the Lakers’ official invitation back to that prestigious club. And a mea culpa from yours truly.

A quick look at the before and after to set the stage here:

Through Feb. 27, when I excluded them from a list of eight title-contending teams and two honorable mentions, they were 34-24 (sixth in the Western Conference), 19th in net rating, 11th in offensive rating and 24th in defensive rating.

Since Feb. 28, they have been 12-2 (third in the West), with wins against the New York Knicks, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Denver Nuggets, the Houston Rockets (twice), the Heat and the Orlando Magic. Entering their 113-110 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Monday, they were fourth in net rating, third in offensive rating and eighth in defensive rating since Feb. 28.

between Atkinson, who tallied 36 points (35 on attacks and 1 block), and Abby Akey, who contributed 14 points. For the Atenienses, Emily Elliott finished with 21 points, while Karla Santos and Solimar Cestero contributed 16 and 10 points, respectively.

The Leonas outperformed Manatí in every statistical category: 63-58 in attacks, 13-7 in blocks, 90-78 in digs, 22-19 in assists, 6-2 in service aces, and 65-45 in passes.

Quarterfinal play was to continue on Wednesday night in Section A, with the Cangrejeras of Santurce (1-0) hosting the Valencianas of Juncos (0-0) at Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Hato Rey. The Pinkin of Corozal (0-1) round out Section A.

Quarterfinals format

The quarterfinals feature the six teams that participated in the regular season, divided into two groups of three based on their final standings.

Section A: Santurce (1st place), Corozal (3rd), Juncos (6th).

Section B: Caguas (2nd), Ponce (4th), Manatí (5th).

Beyond all the numbers, though, is the fact that we are still seeing LeBron James’ vintage competitiveness and hoops acumen at this stage, and at this age -- 41 -- and it has made these past few weeks wonderful to watch. (Facebook via NBA Philippines)

The Leonas of Ponce outblocked the Atenienses of Manatí 13-7 en route to the quarterfinals win. (Facebook via Las Atenienses de Manati)

The turnaround boils down to a handful of factors, but none has been bigger than Luka Doncic’s sheer brilliance. During this sensational stretch, Doncic, 27, has made a late push to challenge Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic for most valuable player honors: 35.7 points per game over his last 14 (including 38.5% on 12.8 3s per game), 8.2 rebounds, 7.4 assists, 2.3 steals.

The big man DeAndre Ayton went from complaining about his role to being totally bought in in a matter of weeks. Doncic, Austin Reaves and James — all perimeter players who have been accused of being turnstiles on defense — are putting forth the proper effort on that end. The Lakers’ staff, headed by their second-year coach, JJ Redick, deserves a lot of credit for this turn of events, as well.

But the James story line is the most interesting one. All of a sudden, with James putting on a selfless and spectacular show as the game’s best third option, it is fair to wonder if the notion of him remaining a Laker beyond this season might be a viable option again. If, of course, he doesn’t retire when his contract expires this summer.

As recently as January, not long after an ESPN report detailed dysfunction in James’ relationship with the Lakers organization, the consensus in the league was that there was no way he would be back in a Lakers jersey. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors were, and are, often mentioned by league executives as his most likely destinations. But it was the lack of synergy and consistent success with James on the court, above all else, that drove this idea of an unavoidable exit. Not to mention the Father Time component, with sciatica issues costing him the first month of the regular season (when the Lakers started 10-4 without him) and questions rising about whether he could still be an impact player.

More specifically, there was a mountain of evidence that James did not fit in with Doncic and Reaves early on.

In lineups that included Doncic, Reaves and James through Feb. 27, the Lakers were 8-6 with a 109.6 offensive rating and a 114.5 defensive rating) in 238 combined minutes.

This was a major problem, of course, because Doncic is the face of the franchise, and Reaves, 27, is the Lakers’ top priority in free agency this summer. Reaves, who is earning $13.9 million this season, has a player option for $14.8 million next season that he is expected to decline. He is in line for a big payday.

As if it was not problematic enough that James ($52.6 million this season) was struggling on his own, the prospect of him hindering the team’s new dynamic duo was the kind of thing that would surely lead to his Laker Land end. When James references all that chatter about how the “team is better off without him,” as he put it, this is what he is referring to. And as he is so keenly aware, everything that has happened since sends a different message about what might come next.

James has taken a back seat in the best kind of way during

All of a sudden, with LeBron James putting on a selfless and spectacular show as the game’s best third option, it is fair to wonder if the notion of him remaining a Laker beyond this season might be a viable option again. (Instagram via lbjhistory)

this stretch, with his shot volume taking a serious dip (16.3 shots per game through Feb. 27 and 12.6 since) while his efficiency has spiked (49.8% overall to 58.3, with his 3-point attempts dipping from 4.6 per game to 2.8).

His usage rate — as good a sign as any of his willingness to sacrifice and find a way to fit in — has gone from 27.3 through Feb. 27 to 21.6 since then. For recent reference, James’ usage rate was 29.1 last season, 28.5 in the 2023-24 campaign and 32.2 in 2022-23.

Beyond all the numbers, though, is the fact that we are still seeing James’ vintage competitiveness and hoops acumen at this stage, and at this age, and it has made these past few weeks wonderful to watch. If it wasn’t clear quite yet, he is not ready to be put out to pasture. Anyone who saw him dive headlong for a loose ball against Denver in that March 14 overtime win could see that much.

He is figuring out this Lakers group and reminding us all yet again why it has never been wise to cast much doubt in his direction. His smile told that story all by itself.
