Coamo mayor: Housing connections to Toa Vaca would worsen system amid drought

Coamo Mayor Juan Carlos García Padilla said Wednesday that the latest assessment from the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA), which placed the Toa Vaca, Carraízo and Cidra reservoirs under close observation due to declining water levels, validates months of warnings about the risks of unchecked development in the region.

PRASA’s update noted that prolonged dry conditions could force the expansion of water rationing to additional municipalities -- including Coamo. García Padilla argued that the agency’s own findings demonstrate why proposed housing projects along the Coamo-Santa Isabel boundary should not be connected to the already strained Toa Vaca system.

He emphasized that both municipalities have existing housing inventory that could be rehabilitated without extending water distribution lines or adding pressure to vulnerable infrastructure. Linking new developments to Toa Vaca, he said, would be “a planning mistake” with direct consequences for thousands of Coamo families who rely on the reservoir.

“The information released today by PRASA confirms exactly what we’ve been saying,” García Padilla said. “If the government acknowledges that Toa Vaca is under observation and that drought conditions could force broader rationing, it makes no sense to keep adding hundreds of new homes to that same system.”

The mayor reiterated that the proposed development could instead be supplied through existing wells in Santa Isabel, avoiding unnecessary expansion of the regional network fed by Toa Vaca. He argued that this alternative would protect both new residents and long-established communities such as Santa Catalina and Los Llanos.

García Padilla added that PRASA continues to evaluate reservoir conditions and has warned that additional municipalities may face rationing if drought persists. That reality, he said, underscores the need for long-term planning that prioritizes infrastructure capacity.

“Water is a limited resource,” he said. “We cannot keep approving projects without first asking whether the system can sustain them for the next twenty or thirty years. Communities that have depended on Toa Vaca for decades should not be put at risk because of avoidable planning decisions.”

The Coamo mayor urged PRASA, the Puerto Rico Planning Board and the Permits Management Office to ensure that all project evaluations consider the real capacity of potable water systems, stressing that economic development must occur where infrastructure can support it.

“Strengthening existing systems and using available alternatives is far more sensible than continuing to overload a reservoir already under pressure from climate conditions,” García Padilla said. “Our responsibility is to protect the right to water for current and future generations.”

Work at PRASA’s Sergio Cuevas plant not yet complete

José Rivera Ortiz, executive director of the Metropolitan Region of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA), said Wednesday that repair work at the Sergio Cuevas Water Treatment Plant in Trujillo Alto is still ongoing.

Crews are currently addressing a leak in a 48-inch pipeline.

“Our priority at all times has been to handle this repair responsibly and safely, but above all, to restore potable water service to our people as soon as possible,” Rivera Ortiz said. “For this reason, our teams continue to work tirelessly until the intervention is complete and system recovery can

begin immediately.”

System recovery will be gradual, the official said; therefore, service restoration times will vary depending on the elevation and distance of each sector.

Once the leak repair is finished, the PRASA operations team will immediately begin the process of gradually restoring the system to ensure the distribution network stabilizes and service is recovered in an orderly manner for the communities served by the system.

While work concludes and the system recovers, PRASA is continuing to coordinate potable water distribution via tanker trucks in conjunction with the Municipal Emergency Management Offices of affected municipalities.

Governor signs measures to modernize Education Dept., create semiquincentennial license plate

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón has signed two administration-backed measures aimed at strengthening the island’s public education system and commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The first, Senate Bill 772 -- now Law 125-2026 -- is part of the governor’s government program and seeks to overhaul the Department of Education’s organizational, administrative, academic and technological structure. The legislation establishes new leadership roles, including a chief financial officer, chief information officer and chief academic officer, while clearly defining the responsibilities of the deputy secretary of education. According to La Fortaleza, the changes are designed to improve fiscal oversight, streamline academic planning and modernize technological operations across the agency.

González Colón said the reforms are essential to ensuring that public resources are used responsibly and that students receive the services they deserve.

“The education of our students requires a

modern, transparent administration focused on results,” she said, adding that the new law strengthens financial controls, academic coordination and technological management.

The measure also aligns with efforts announced earlier this year to transition the Department of Education out of federal receivership. Since 2021, a federally appointed trustee has overseen the agency’s financial processes. The administration argues that the new structure will support a more efficient operation and reinforce accountability.

In addition to the education reform, the governor signed Joint Resolution 38, Administration Measure 119, directing the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP) to design and issue a commemorative license plate marking the semiquincentennial of the United States. The plate will be available to drivers on a

voluntary basis through June 30, 2027, and may be used officially on motor vehicles or kept as a collectible. Government agencies and municipalities must purchase a commemorative plate for any vehicles acquired during the measure’s effective period.

González Colón described the initiative as an opportunity for Puerto Ricans to participate in a historic national celebration. “The 250th anniversary of the United States represents a moment to recognize the democratic values, freedoms, and institutions that have contributed to Puerto Rico’s development and strengthened our ties with the American nation,” she said.

The legislation also authorizes a public information campaign to promote awareness of the plate’s availability and requires drivers who wish to use it as an official identifier to submit a formal request to DTOP.

COR3 seeks contractors for Paseo Puerta de Tierra, school reconstruction projects

Central Office for Recovery, Reconstruction, and Resilience (COR3) Interim

Executive Director María L. Marín Colón announced on Wednesday the publication of several tenders for reconstruction projects funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The projects include the rehabilitation of the Puerta de Tierra Linear Walk (Paseo Puerta de Tierra) in San Juan and the reconstruction of two public schools.

“Each project that enters the contracting phase represents a firm step forward in advancing Puerto Rico’s reconstruction,” Marín Colón said. “We urge all qualified contractors to participate in these processes, as greater competition strengthens project execution, promotes transparency, and contributes to the efficient use of allocated funds. At COR3,

we will continue to facilitate and expedite processes to keep reconstruction moving forward.”

Following completion of the design phase for the Puerta de Tierra Linear Walk project, the Highways and Transportation Authority (ACT by its initials in Spanish) launched a bidding process to select the company that will carry out reconstruction and mitigation work. The project is intended to address damage caused by Hurricane Maria, as well as the continuing impact of waves and coastal erosion.

The work includes demolishing and removing existing material and installing mitigation measures to strengthen coastal stability. These measures include building a steel pile wall, placing rocks and geotubes, and adding other elements designed to reduce the impact of future coastal events.

According to the ACT, a virtual pre-bid

meeting for interested bidders will be held Wednesday, July 22, at 2 p.m.

Separately, the Department of Education published bidding processes for the reconstruction of Conchita Igartúa de Suárez School in Aguadilla and Juan B. Stubbe School in Cidra. For both projects, the deadline to submit questions or request clarifications is July 17, and proposals must be submitted by Aug. 17.

More information about these and other FEMA-funded contracting opportunities can be found in the COR3 Transparency Portal’s Procurement Process Inventory section.

The digital tool centralizes procurement processes tied to reconstruction projects, making it easier for contractors, suppliers, professionals and citizens to identify participation opportunities in a more agile, accessible, and organized way. It also supports greater transparency and competitiveness in

Gov’t activates Íntegra to centralize finances of more than 60 agencies

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón presented the Íntegra system on Wednesday, an enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform designed to centralize financial and supply chain processes across more than 60 agencies of the central government.

“With the implementation of the new ERP, we are no longer the last jurisdiction in

the United States still operating with a financial platform developed in the late 1990s,” González Colón stated at a press conference.

Íntegra replaces legacy systems that operated separately in different agencies and aims to standardize processes, reduce manual tasks, strengthen internal controls and provide faster access to financial information.

The system has already impacted more than 84,000 registered employees and more

than 8,000 active users since its launch.

As part of the process, more than 20,000 tests were completed, 57 technological interfaces were certified, and more than 170 training sessions were offered to government employees.

“We are talking about a profound transformation of how the government manages public resources,” the governor stated at the announcement of the launch, where she

was joined by La Fortaleza Chief of Staff and Fiscal Agency & Financial Advisory Authority Executive Director Francisco Domenech Fernández and the Deputy Chief of Staff Itza García Rodríguez.

Domenech Fernández noted that the system includes the Finance and Supply Chain modules, which will allow government suppliers to have greater visibility and access to real-time information about their transactions.

Sector leader demands swift gov’t response to aid long-term care homes amid water shortages

Chastises Family Dept. over ‘immediate recommended actions’ communique

With various towns on the island facing serious drought problems and water rationing plans, LongTerm Care Institutions Federation (FICPRO by its acronym in Spanish) President Jonathan Morales Adorno on Wednesday demanded the need for a quick, coordinated and effective response from the island government to guarantee the supply of potable water to the nearly 1,500 homes licensed by the Family Department and those licensed under the Mental Health and Anti-Addiction Services Administration.

The long-term care industry is one of the most heavily regulated. Therefore, the FICPRO president questioned why, in the midst of the crisis, instead of offering urgent

Long-Term Care Institutions Federation

President Jonathan Morales Adorno

and ongoing assistance, the Family Department’s Licensing Office chose to send a communication dated July 6 reminding long-term care homes of the “immediate recommended actions,” emphasizing compliance with Regulation 9720 for the

care of older adults, as well as Law No. 94 of June 22, 1977, the Establishments for the Elderly Law. The office also announced inspection visits.

“Oversight must be tied to prioritizing long-term care homes in the face of water rationing because our institutions provide essential services 24/7,” Morales Adorno stressed. “Common sense and responsibility remind all homeowners that, in the face of a drought and crisis due to rationing, it is our ministerial duty to review and update emergency plans, verify the availability of stored water, activate cistern and pumping system protocols, coordinate with the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority … to learn the schedule for interruption and restoration of drinking water service, as well as arrange for support with water trucks and keep household staff, residents and their families informed.”

The FICPRO president said the operators of care homes “will again do everything within our power to guarantee the safety,

well-being and continuity of the services received by thousands of senior citizens and people with mental health conditions.”

However, he said, “it’s also time to acknowledge a reality. Households cannot face an emergency of this magnitude alone. We need strong support from the government.”

“It’s not simply a matter of receiving a reminder of our obligations or announcing that they will visit random homes to ensure compliance with laws and regulations,” Morales Adorno said. “That only leads to great frustration.”

“The long-term care homes of Puerto Rico have demonstrated, time and again, our commitment to the most vulnerable populations,” he added. “We did so during hurricanes Irma and Maria, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and after the earthquakes that impacted the southern part of the island. In each of those emergencies, we remained open, caring for lives when many other services had to stop.”

Discover Puerto Rico turns viral video into Puerto Rico tourism anthem

After capturing audiences across social media, the viral Puerto Rico song that became an unofficial anthem for travelers dreaming of spending time on the island now has an official music video and sing-along experience, bringing the internet phenomenon from screens to some of Puerto Rico’s top destinations.

The music video and sing-along version debuted Wednesday after weeks of online momentum that transformed the song from a playful social media creation into a fan-favorite celebration of the island. Since its release, the song has generated hundreds of millions of plays across social platforms, inspiring usergenerated content, singalongs and widespread engagement.

As the phenomenon grew, creator Bill Stiteler (Saxboy Billy) and Discover Puerto Rico, the island’s official destination marketing organization, came together to bring the song to life through an official music video filmed across Puerto Rico.

The project marks a rare evolution of a viral, fan-driven song into an official music video, turning an organic social media moment into a celebration of Puerto Rico’s culture, communities and regional identity.

“At Discover Puerto Rico, we believe the most powerful stories are the ones that emerge organically and create genuine emotional connections with people,” said Jorge L. Pérez, CEO of Discover Puerto Rico. “What began as a fan-created song became an extraordinary opportunity to showcase the energy, creativity, and diversity that define Puerto Rico. This project

demonstrates how culture, music, and authentic experiences can inspire new travelers to discover not only our iconic landmarks, but also the communities, flavors, and traditions that make our island an unmatched destination to enjoy year-round.”

Stiteler said “I created the song because Puerto Rico is one of those places that leaves a lasting impression on people.”

“I never imagined it would resonate with so many people online, let alone lead to an opportunity to film an official music video across the island,” he said. “It’s been incredible to see how people have embraced it.”

The production recreates many of the places, experiences and moments celebrated in the song, transforming the lyrics into a visual journey across the island. Filmed across multiple regions, the video takes viewers beyond the traditional tourist experience to showcase the people, places and culture that make Puerto Rico unique.

While San Juan and Caguas serve as central characters in the story, the video also highlights the richness and diversity found throughout the island, inviting viewers to explore Puerto Rico’s distinct regions, towns and experiences.

The music video was filmed at locations including Old San Juan, El Morro, the T-Mobile District, Toro Verde Urban Park, downtown Caguas, Balneario Monserrate, Terruño and the Kioskos de Luquillo, and Las Croabas in Fajardo. Throughout the video, viewers experience Puerto Rico through its music, food, culture, outdoor adventures and warm hospitality.

Discover Puerto Rico is also releasing an official sing-along version on YouTube, allowing audiences everywhere to join the

viral hit. The experience features a playful coquí that guides viewers through the lyrics, transforming one of Puerto Rico’s most beloved symbols into a companion for Puerto Rico’s newest summer anthem.

Trump administration guts efforts to prevent gun violence, suppressing reports

The Trump administration has gutted federal gun violence prevention efforts since returning to office, slashing funding for programs and research and even suppressing taxpayer-funded reports aimed at reducing gun injuries and deaths.

The cutbacks, which span agencies throughout the federal government, represent a shift in philosophy about how to address gun violence, away from a public-health-oriented approach focused on prevention, to a law-and-order approach focused on beefing up police departments and seizing illegal weapons while also systematically rolling back firearms regulations. The move away from prevention and regulation aimed at saving lives is playing out in other areas of public health, too, including illegal drugs and smoking.

Sen. Christopher Murphy, D-Conn., speaks with a group of anti gun violence activists and gun violence survivors in Washington, Feb. 12, 2025. As the administration works to expand gun rights, hospitals and community groups have lost funding, and reports on preventing firearm injuries have vanished from government websites. (Haiyun Jiang/The New York Times)

The administration’s approach to gun violence also reflects President Donald Trump’s long political alliance with gun rights groups and his determination to undo the policies of his predecessor, President Joe Biden. Soon after taking office, Trump shuttered Biden’s White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, ordered a review of Biden’s firearms policies and issued an executive order titled, “Protecting Second Amendment Rights.”

The Justice Department’s civil rights division also took the highly unusual step last week of suing Virginia and California to overturn those states’ restrictions on gun ownership. The suit was the division’s “first ever affirmative litigation in favor of expanding gun rights,” said Joseph Blocher, an expert on Second Amendment law at Duke University.

Still, the cuts are perplexing to people involved in prevention work because Trump is no stranger to gun violence. He has survived three assassination attempts, and his close ally Charlie Kirk was gunned down while giving a speech last year. Kirk’s accused assassin faces a court hearing in Utah this week. The man accused of trying to kill Trump at a press gala in April appeared in federal court in Washington last week.

“It is a grand irony,” said Amy Solomon, who oversaw a violence prevention program at the Justice Department when she served as assistant attorney general in the Biden administration. That program, the Community Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative, has since lost $150 million in funding, which was steered to law enforcement, she said.

“The groups and organizations who work on this are very strong and very resilient, but so many of them have had to cut services, have had to lay off staff; some of them have closed their doors altogether,” Solomon said. “And what’s replacing it is a very heavy-handed, law-enforcement-centric focus that frankly isn’t even focusing on the violence.”

Spokespeople for the White House and the departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services said the administration’s policies have made Americans safer while eliminating wasteful spending.

“The Trump administration remains totally committed to being responsible stewards of American taxpayer dollars, and that includes no longer funding programs that were wasteful,

misdirected and counterproductive,” said Abigail Jackson, a White House spokesperson.

Jackson and her colleagues at other agencies also credited the president with a marked decline in violent crime in 2025. They cited an analysis of 40 cities by the nonprofit Council on Criminal Justice, which found a steep drop in the murder rate and that violent crime overall had dropped to below its rate in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.

But violent crime was also declining under Biden. Fatimah Loren Dreier is the executive director of the Health Alliance for Violence Intervention, which supports hospital-based violence prevention programs and laid off 20% of its staff after the Justice Department funding was cut. She cited recent research showing that the programs, based in trauma centers, can successfully prevent victims of violent injuries, including gunshot wounds, from being injured again.

The programs focus on “retaliatory violence,” she said, which is concentrated in cities with high crime rates. Grounded in the idea that simply stitching up a patient’s wounds will not prevent future violence, they employ doctors, social service workers and “trusted messengers” to follow and counsel patients at risk of being injured again.

“For some cities, there have been historic declines — cities like Baltimore, Chicago,” she said, adding, “It’s pretty remarkable, the impact of these investments.”

At the Department of Homeland Security, the Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships, aimed at preventing terrorist attacks and “targeted violence,” lost $18.5 million last year. Bill Braniff, the counterterrorism expert who founded it, left government for academic work.

The center awarded its last grants in September 2024, according to its website. In announcing the grant terminations, the Trump administration called it a “cash cow for radical activists” and spotlighted a handful of groups, including some focused on violence against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

The program also funded groups at Auburn University in Alabama, the Nevada university system, a Minnesota sheriff’s office, an educational nonprofit in western Kentucky, the Jewish

Federation of Pittsburgh and Louisiana’s largest historically Black college. Those programs were largely designed to help local officials identify and combat threats.

After The New York Times inquired about Trump’s policies, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives issued a news release saying its “shift in priorities” has resulted in nearly 50,000 firearms “seized from criminals” since January 2025.

But a majority of gun-related deaths in the United States, roughly 60%, are suicides, and experts say beefing up policing may not prevent them. Roughly 44,000 Americans, an average of 120 a day, died from gun-related injuries, including accidents and suicides, each day in 2024, the most recent year for which figures are available.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose father and uncle were assassinated, has said he does not view gun violence as a public health problem. “I would say it’s an epidemic,” Kennedy said at a House hearing in April. “I think it’s a law enforcement issue and not public health.” Kennedy has presided over layoffs that have gutted the CDC’s Division of Violence Prevention. But last week, a day after the Times sought comment for this article, the administration posted two notices alerting researchers to the CDC’s plans for future violence prevention studies, though the notices do not mention firearms.

Apart from declining to fund new research, the administration has also suppressed previous studies and reports. After Congress passed a bipartisan gun safety bill in 2022 that contained funding to help states enact so-called red flag laws, the Department of Health and Human Services commissioned a report on the statutes. The laws authorize courts to issue “extreme risk protection orders,” or ERPOs, allowing law enforcement to temporarily remove firearms from people deemed dangerous by a judge. Trump briefly embraced red flag laws, which the gun lobby fiercely opposes, during his first administration, in the aftermath of a mass shooting in 2019.

The report, financed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, explored the scientific evidence behind the laws, and offered a guide to help state mental health authorities enforce them. It was posted on the agency’s website at the tail end of the Biden administration but vanished after Trump took office.

The administration also took down an advisory issued by the surgeon general declaring firearm violence a public health crisis. While that made headlines, the removal of the “ERPO report,” as its authors call it, attracted no notice.

The document has survived on a website hosted by the nonprofit Ad Council, though it is difficult to find. The report’s lead author, Jeffrey W. Swanson, an expert in mental health and gun violence at Duke University whose research shows that red flag laws save lives, said that he had no idea it survived online, and that he had been given no explanation for its removal.

“The American people paid for the ERPO report,” Swanson said, adding that he was speaking for himself, not his university. “They deserve to see it, and they deserve a public health system where scientific knowledge is not dependent upon political convenience.”

Part of Florida’s ‘Stop WOKE’ law ruled illegal by appeals court

An appellate court earlier this week struck down parts of a Florida law that restrict the teaching of ideas related to race, sexism and unconscious bias in college classrooms.

The higher education provisions of the law, the “Stop WOKE Act,” which Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, signed into law in 2022, had already been blocked that same year by a lower court judge. That judge had said the law amounted to viewpoint discrimination and violated the First Amendment.

On Tuesday, a U.S. appellate court agreed in 2-1 decision, criticizing the state’s assertion that it can control the speech of a professor whose salary it pays.

The law “runs headlong” into the Supreme Court’s endorsements of academic freedom, wrote the two judges, from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th District.

“Florida’s salary-for-speech rule is a breathtaking assertion of power to ban unpopular ideas from public discourse in the very places

the State’s own statutes recognize as centers of inquiry — classrooms where students are trusted to puzzle through ideas that are good and bad, easy and hard, ideally getting ever closer to the truth,” the decision said.

The act includes a similar provision for K-12 education that restricts how concepts related to sexism and racism can be taught. That

remains in place.

The DeSantis administration did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

Several states, including Oklahoma, have also passed laws aimed at curbing the teaching of “divisive concepts.” The American Civil Liberties Union, which filed the court case in Florida, is also challenging the Oklahoma law, among others.

“This ruling sets a strong precedent that higher education cannot be limited to the whims of politicians,” Leah Watson, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU, said in a statement.

The Florida ruling does not directly affect legal challenges in other states with similar laws, but it signals that the First Amendment “still protects against blatant ideological censorship of teaching at public universities,” said Jonathan Friedman, with PEN America, a free-expression group.

Recognizing that laws like Stop WOKE were on shaky constitutional ground, some conservatives in recent years have advocated different approaches to asserting control over

curriculum they don’t favor. Those methods include restricting general education courses at universities so they are less accessible and eliminating classes altogether.

Friedman said those who want to censor speech in college classrooms have moved away from explicit prohibitions in favor of “dismantling tenure, shared governance, accreditation and institutional autonomy.”

The Stop WOKE Act prohibits instructors from promoting, among other things, the idea that a person’s skin color determines whether they are an oppressor or oppressed, or that virtues such as merit, hard work and colorblindness are racist or sexist.

The court said Tuesday that Florida was seeking to strip professors and students of the ability to “fully engage with ideas that are, for better or worse, very popular in some academic circles.”

“Hearing an idea you disagree with is not discrimination,” the ruling stated. “It is an opportunity to come up with a better idea, or maybe even change your mind.”

Lessons from the Graham Platner disaster

Hopefully, by the time you read this, Graham Platner will have dropped out of the Senate race in Maine. If he hasn’t, he needs to, immediately.

His campaign, which started with such excitement and inspired so many people in Maine, has become a shameful catastrophe. What’s left — besides finding a Democrat to run in his place — is figuring out what, if anything, can be learned from this debacle.

As you probably know by now, Politico published a story on Monday about a woman, Jenny Racicot, who says that Platner raped her. According to Racicot, they’d been romantically involved, on and off, for more than two years when he showed up at her house drunk and uninvited one night in 2021, let himself in and forced himself on her.

She confided her ordeal to a man she dated after Platner, as well as to her therapist, and showed Politico text messages she sent in 2023 warning an acquaintance away from him. Her account is completely believable and completely devastating.

Platner denies Racicot’s accusations but seems to realize that his campaign may no longer be viable. In a video posted on social media, he said, “Regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting, but mindful of the political reality it will inflict, we are taking the time to reflect on the best path forward.”

But that time needs to wrap up. According to Maine law, Platner has to drop out by next Monday for Democrats to replace him on the November ballot. The sooner this mess ends, the better.

The Platner campaign represented an electoral insurgen-

cy against the Democratic Party; now, there are going to be furious recriminations against those who launched it. There is plenty of blame to go around.

Most at fault, of course, is Platner himself. He allegedly victimized Racicot, and then his campaign victimized her again, putting her into a situation where she felt she had to go public. He betrayed his supporters by plunging into a campaign while knowing he had a closet full of skeletons and drawing people who believed in him into a doomed enterprise.

Maine Democrats were willing to overlook Platner’s Totenkopf tattoo, his terrible Reddit posts and his sexting with other women while he was married because they felt so invigorated by him and the movement he was creating. They went out on a limb for him, and he had every reason to know it was going to be sawed off.

Also liable for this disaster are the progressive operatives who recruited Platner and were so infatuated with his identity — a gruff, handsome oysterman with social democratic politics — that they failed to do their due diligence. The Wall Street Journal reported last month that Platner’s top strategist, Dan Moraff, didn’t want to spring for a thorough background check, which can take weeks and cost around $20,000. “Moraff asked for an expedited, cheaper review to be done within days,” the Journal said.

Moraff, who travels the country trying to recruit leftwing, working-class candidates, reportedly learned about some of Platner’s troubling Reddit posts but decided to charge forward anyway. “Part of our thesis here is that people do not want their candidates grown in vats,” he told The Journal.

as furious as they are, and they no longer trust their leaders to tell them who is electable. That opens up space for outsider candidates who wouldn’t have had a chance a few years ago. It also makes it easier for unfit characters to escape proper vetting.

He’s correct about the appetite for unconventional candidates, but that is no excuse for such willful sloppiness. Before blithely assuming that voters would forgive a candidate’s flaws, he had a responsibility to try to find out what those flaws were.

While I’m assigning blame, I shouldn’t leave out myself. Last October, when stories about Platner’s tattoo and Reddit posts first broke, I went to Maine to write about him. I tried to convey what I saw: a campaign that was electrifying angry Maine voters. But I deeply regret that, impressed by Platner’s political charisma, I wrote that he was “nothing like the edgelord caricature I encountered online.” If anything, he seems to be significantly worse.

One person who tried to alert Democrats was Platner’s former political director, Genevieve McDonald. She quit when the first Platner scandals emerged and has been increasingly outspoken against him. Progressive operatives made her seem like a vindictive person eager to curry favor with Maine’s political establishment. In retrospect, she looks much more like someone who took a profound professional risk to do the right thing. I can’t be the only one who regrets not taking her more seriously.

If there’s a lesson here, it might be about the importance of listening hard to the people telling you what you don’t want to hear. Many Democrats, disgusted by their party’s failure to contain President Donald Trump, want representatives

Graham Platner speaks to supporters in Blue Hill, Maine, after winning the Democratic nomination for the Senate on Tuesday night, June 9, 2026. (Sophie Park/The New York Times)

Platner offered many on the left something they’re desperate for: working-class aesthetics married to uncompromising lefty politics. Many progressives want to believe that with a sufficiently populist message and style, they can win over voters alienated from the Democratic Party, obviating the need for ideological concessions. Platner seemed to embody this possibility, and that made a lot of people look past a lot of red flags until it was almost too late. From page 19

The history at the Smithsonian that the White House finds unpatriotic

While the nation’s 250th birthday may have passed, the pitched partisan battles over how to tell the country’s history — in particular the founding story of 1776 — are hardly over.

On July 4, hours before President Donald Trump gave an address on the National Mall in Washington, the White House posted a lengthy report on its website accusing the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History of engaging in “extreme political activism.”

The 162-page report, credited to the White House Domestic Policy Council, was the latest salvo in the Trump administration’s long-running campaign to gain influence over the broader Smithsonian, which includes 21 museums plus the National Zoo. And it quickly drew strong criticism from historians.

“In another example of executive branch overreach, the White House is seeking to coerce Smithsonian leadership to shape its presentation of U.S. history so that it serves the administration’s political agenda,” the Organization of American Historians said in a statement Monday.

Here are some of the report’s main charges, and how they relate to the administration’s broader push to promote what Trump has called “patriotic” history.

The 250th anniversary

The report has harsh words for the museum’s approach to the recent anniversary, which it says neglects the centrality of the founding. The museum, it said, failed to create “any exhibit dedicated to presenting a general narrative of American history or telling the story of any of our Founding Fathers, the Second Continental Congress, the Declaration of Independence, the American Revolutionary War, or the achievement of independence and the establishment of the constitutional rule of law.”

It states that the museum’s main offering for the 250th, “In Pursuit of Life, Liberty and Happiness,” a scavenger-hunt style display of 250 objects from across American history, is a hodgepodge that “fails to actually celebrate America’s founders or founding.”

The report also faults leadership for not moving “remarkable items” like the portable desk where Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration to a special place within the American history museum. It states that the desk remains in its usual case in the museum, with

people.

That section, according to text still on the museum’s website, notes that Franklin owned roughly a half dozen enslaved people over the course of his life, and only publicly embraced abolitionism in his later years. The text also speculated on whether enslaved people in his household may have played a role in his famous experiments, while noting there is no evidence either way.

The complaint about the exhibition reflects the administration’s broader approach to slavery, which has not been to suppress information about the founders and slavery entirely but to focus on aspects that paint them in a more favorable light.

incorporates artifacts relating to a wide variety of ethnic groups, of diverting proper focus away from Christopher Columbus, the pilgrims and the founders and toward “political activism and modern-day grievances.”

According to the report, the “ultimate goal” of the exhibit is “to convince visitors that illegal aliens are entitled to citizenship, voting rights and ‘belonging’ in America.” Evidence for that claim includes the fact that among the exhibit’s three renditions of the Statue of Liberty is a papier-mache version, made for immigrant farmworkers, that shows her carrying a basket of tomatoes.

the only change being a new bilingual sticker.

But in fact, the desk has been moved across the Mall to the Smithsonian Castle, where it is the centerpiece of an exhibit called “American Aspirations,” curated by Lonnie Bunch III, the Smithsonian’s secretary.

The country’s founding

The report accuses the museum of avoiding “a unified, national narrative,” while encouraging debate about questions the authors believe are settled.

In particular, the report faults a wall text titled “Revolution and the National Story,” which asks how Americans should remember the founding.

“Was it a complete, perfect, sacred event led by a great patriot who, as American children would learn, never told a lie?” the text asks. “Or was it part of a wider, unfinished movement for liberty — deeply imperfect but with sacred aspirations?”

Debate over the meaning and legacy of the Revolution began almost the moment it ended, historians have shown, and has continued through the 250th anniversary. But the report chides the museum for not “providing an answer” or giving “definitive information.”

The founders and slavery

The report criticizes what it sees as the museum’s overemphasis on slavery, particularly when it comes to the founders. It faults an exhibition about Benjamin Franklin’s electricity research, which closed in November, for including a section focused on enslaved

Earlier this year, the administration removed signs from the President’s House Site in Philadelphia relating to George Washington’s ownership of slaves. The proposed replacements emphasize Washington’s private distaste for slavery, and the fact that his will ultimately emancipated the more than 120 people he enslaved. But the proposed new signs omit previously offered information about the ways Washington aggressively pursued and sometimes harshly punished enslaved people who tried to escape his household.

Christianity and the founding

The report accuses the museum of quoting the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution selectively, “in ways that mute their claims about equality, ordered liberty, natural rights and the divine source of those inalienable rights.” It also accuses the museum of depicting Christianity only as an instrument of oppression, while ignoring “the constructive role of Christian belief and Christian institutions in shaping the nation and its freedoms.”

The claim that the founders intended the United States to be a Christian nation is sharply challenged by most mainstream historians, and it is not universally embraced across the political right. But it has been heavily emphasized by the Trump administration as part of its events for the 250th anniversary.

Immigration and activism

The report criticizes the museum’s depiction of immigration, particularly in an exhibit called “Many Voices, One Nation.” The exhibit explores the ideal of “E Pluribus Unum” and how waves of arrivals of different groups joined the Native Americans who were already here to create the American people.

The report accuses the exhibit, which

The White House report objects to the exhibit’s statement that “early leaders envisioned a country that promised opportunity and freedom — but only for some.” The report sees this as evidence of the museum’s broader “anti-white animus.” But the exhibit’s claim is supported by historical evidence.

The Naturalization Act of 1790, signed by George Washington, said that only “free white persons” could become citizens. In the early years of the republic, many leaders, including Thomas Jefferson, suggested that people of African descent were a “separate nation” that could never live alongside whites and should be sent back to Africa after emancipation.

Investors get inflation ‘wake-up call’ as Trump fires up oil prices

Global investors had a stark reminder of how quickly the oil market can reignite concern about inflation and volatility, after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that an interim agreement with Iran to end the war “is over”.

Inflation-sensitive assets such as bonds and gold tumbled in the face of a 5% surge in oil.

“It’s a big wake-up call for markets,” said Aneeka Gupta, director of macroeconomic research at Wisdomtree.

The expectation had been “that we were likely to start to see the flow of oil coming back into the markets, and we saw inflation expectations being dialled down”.

The question is where prices will settle once the mini-glut passes. Will the latest developments make tankers less willing to re-enter the Gulf?

The news hit at an inconvenient time for stocks. Some doubt is creeping into the AI story, as traders ask whether companies that have raked in billions of dollars for chips and AI models will keep doing so if supply bottlenecks ease, or if demand does not pan out as they expect.

Since the Nasdaq’s record high on June 1, the makers of memory chips have been subject to a volatile downward correction. An ETF of memory chip shares has fallen nearly 8%, while the Philadelphia semiconductor index is down 5%.

The world beyond AI has fared much better. The equalweight S&P 500, which strips out the outsized impact of the largest stocks, has risen nearly 3%, and Europe’s “AI-poor” STOXX 600 is up 4%.

Bond yields jumped after Trump’s comments, taking their cue from oil prices, as traders raised their expectations of price increases and positioned for higher interest rates reversing recent weeks’ reduction in bets on hikes.

jrclegalsolutions tuabogadapr@outlook.com Urb. Villa Blanca 76 Calle Aquamarina Caguas PR

Oil prices were inevitably the first to react to news from the Gulf and jumped as much as 6% on Wednesday to a two-week high after Trump’s remarks.

That said, Brent futures at close to $78 a barrel are far from the $100-and-above at which they traded for two months from mid-March, which had policymakers’ inflation gauges flashing bright red.

Prices had fallen rapidly after the U.S. and Iran signed an initial memorandum of understanding in June, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, as oil from tankers that had been stranded inside the Gulf hit the market, causing a mini-glut.

Contracts tracking euro zone CPI inflation expectations in one year’s time rose 14 basis points (bps) to 1.992%, and traders were last pricing in around 35 bps of further tightening this year from the European Central Bank, up from 25 bps on Tuesday. They saw 36 bps of tightening from the Federal Reserve, according to LSEG data on the Fed Funds market, and 32 bps from the Bank of England.

Still, markets expect consumer inflation in the U.S. to be around just 2.15% in a year’s time, down sharply from the 4.2% figure recorded in May.

Shorter-dated bonds, which are sensitive to interest rate expectations, were the biggest movers.

Germany and Britain’s 2-year bond yields both jumped 10 bps to trade at their highest in just under a month. The reaction in the U.S., which is an energy exporter, was less dramatic with 2-year yields up 5 bps.

Volatility had been largely absent for much of the past few months, but Wednesday’s news sent several measures higher.

The VIX volatility index had been back to its prewar levels by early June, bar a brief spike on worries about high-flying tech stocks. A similar story can be told for volatility gauges for bonds and currencies — an almost unbroken decline over recent weeks, and a jump on Wednesday.

As Iran ceasefire frays, Trump faces a muddled war and unpalatable options

Just two weeks ago, opening the Great American State Fair, President Donald Trump triumphantly declared: “For the first time in 3,000 years, we are going to have peace in the Middle East.”

It was typical bravado for Trump. But the “peace” he was celebrating — the ceasefire with Iran that on Wednesday he declared “over” after less than a month — was already beginning to unravel. The result was perhaps predictable for a 14-paragraph memorandum of understanding that skirted major issues and was hastily assembled so Trump could declare

he had reached a deal, any deal.

Now Trump appears to be confronting the consequences of his haste, and of his assumption, born of his time in the real estate business, that his adversary would prize economic benefits over the revolutionary ideology that has driven its politics since the 1979 Iranian revolution. That has left him facing a range of unpalatable options amid seemingly intractable sticking points over the fate of Iran’s nuclear program — to say nothing of its missile program, its support for terrorist groups and its repression of its own people.

At the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, on Wednesday after the two sides had exchanged strikes, he threatened major new combat operations. Those included seizing a key Iranian oil processing island and attacking the country’s infrastructure and desalination plants, which experts have said could constitute a war crime. (Trump did say he was most hesitant to hit the desalination facilities.)

But Trump has made such threats without following through before, and he added on Wednesday that he did not anticipate a return to full-scale war. Such a move has little domestic support, and some of Trump’s Republican allies fear the economic and political consequences less than four months before the midterm elections. No one is more aware of that calendar, or Trump’s hesitation to repeat the experience of the spring, than the Iranian leadership.

The president could instead reimpose the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports, an attempt to cut off the country’s economic lifeline. But that would require a continued, intense U.S. presence in the region, and while Trump contended in April that it would lead to Iranian economic collapse, his earlier imposition of it did not.

Or he could elect to live in a world of neither war nor peace, an era of episodic skirmishes in the Persian Gulf, punctuated by periodic negotiations, with traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil-shipping route, greatly reduced from the 130 or so ships that passed through each day before the war. The energy markets would most likely adjust; to some degree they already have.

But for a president who promised a quick, cost-free confrontation with an old adversary — “four to six weeks” was the White House prediction in the opening weeks — an ongoing conflict would amount to near-total failure on the mission he initially set out upon. And the price would be staggering: The Pentagon has already asked Congress for about $70 bil-

lion to cover the early operations around Iran, and the cost rises every week.

“The problem is that all the options — endure, escalate or agree — are unattractive in different ways,” Richard Fontaine, the CEO of the Center for a New American Security and a former aide to Sen. John McCain, said Wednesday. “The likeliest outcome is a continuing series of low-level, tit-for-tat attacks, followed by frantic diplomacy by mediators, the emergence of a new and fragile ceasefire, and then probably another round of strikes.

Fontaine added: “It will be a long oscillation between cold war and low-level hot war.”

Many of the problems Trump is facing today were exacerbated by the ceasefire deal itself. It left unresolved, for a later negotiation that Trump now says he has little interest in pursuing, the fate of Iran’s stockpile of nearbomb-grade nuclear fuel, the most prominent among the administration’s shifting reasons for attacking Iran on Feb. 28.

The agreement appeared to hand Iran at least some control over passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the superweapon that Iran, and specifically the Revolutionary Guard, has skillfully manipulated to drive up oil prices, and now has used to try to justify attacks on tankers and cargo ships not hewing to its new rules.

“What we’re seeing now is Iran, and more

specifically the IRGC, trying to exert control over the strait and declaring that this control is their sovereign right,” said Kevin Donegan, a retired Navy vice admiral who served as a Navy commander in the Middle East, referring to the Guard. “That’s the main card they have to play, and as a result we can expect they will continue to try to disrupt any ship traffic that uses routes different from the ones they have published.”

The deal was silent on Iran’s missile arsenal, the key issue for Israel. And it depended on a ceasefire in Lebanon, though the parties to that conflict, Israel and Hezbollah, were not signatories of the agreement. And it set an unrealistic deadline, 60 days, to deal diplomatically with those and other issues that months of active combat had failed to resolve.

There are, of course, many more turns ahead in this drama. Trump threatened again Wednesday to try to seize Kharg Island, where giant tankers collect Iran’s oil and head to world markets. He may seek to seize the 60% enriched nuclear material deep underground at Isfahan, a mission for which Special Operations forces have trained extensively, though he dismissed the need for it on Wednesday.

“We’ve already got the nuclear material, because it’s so far underground,” he said, noting that the Iranians do not have the heavy equipment needed to unearth it.

After insulting allies at NATO summit, Trump says they love him

President Donald Trump’s headspinning appearance at the NATO summit in Ankara on Wednesday began with him insulting vast swaths of Europe during the morning sessions and finished just hours later with him declaring that the whole thing had been one big kumbaya session.

“I just want to say there was tremendous love in that room,” he said at a news conference not long after he had said repeatedly that “I’m not happy with NATO.”

Describing his meetings behind closed doors, he boasted: “They said, ‘Sir, we love you.’ These are grown people saying that. Isn’t that nice?

“Maybe they’re trying to get to me, and in a way, they did,” he said. “Because there was tremendous unity in that room.”

There did, in fact, appear to be some progress to come out of the summit.

NATO pledged $80 billion in military aid to Ukraine this year and next, though that represented a mix of both previous and new commitments. And Trump told President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine that the United States would allow the country to manufacture Patriot air defense systems to protect itself from Russian missiles.

Despite saying last month that he would bring a gift that would make President Recep Tayyip Erdogan “very happy,” Trump said he still had a decision to make about whether to allow Turkey to purchase F-35 fighter jets. He said he had an “inclination” to do so because Turkey did not help Iran during the war with the United States and Israel, and because of what he has described as his deep friendship with its leader.

Hundreds of journalists from around the world pushed, elbowed and yelled at one another to make it into a soaring auditorium in Ankara for the chance to ask a question of a freewheeling American president who might say anything.

“That’s a lot of press, wow,” Trump said, sounding amused, as he took to the

President Donald Trump during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. (Doug Mills/The New York Times)

lectern. His secretaries of state, defense and treasury stood stone-faced behind him as he pinballed his way through all sorts of topics over the next 40 minutes.

The war with Iran flared up again while Trump was in Ankara, just 1,000 miles from Tehran, and the fighting dominated the news conference.

The president said that the ceasefire with Iran was likely over after the United States carried out airstrikes Tuesday against several Iranian targets. The Pentagon said they were in response to Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. On Wednesday, Iran’s armed forces said they had attacked U.S. military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait.

Early in the day at the summit, Trump unleashed verbally on Iran, referring to the country as “scum” and its

leaders as “sick people.”

He was particularly incensed by what he characterized as the Iranians’ dishonest, tricksy negotiating style. “There’s something wrong with them,” he fumed. “We said, ‘Go and do your funeral stuff,’ and instead of that, they start shooting rockets at ships.”

By “funeral stuff” he meant the nationwide funeral procession attended by millions of people for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader killed in the war Trump launched alongside Israel in February.

“They’re cuckoo,” Trump said, tapping an index finger against his cranium.

The NATO secretary-general, Mark Rutte, sat impassively by his side, legs crossed and hands clasped over one knee.

A major motif of this year’s summit involved European leaders deciding whether it was politically advantageous to at last dispense with the niceties and fight back against Trump, as the leaders of Spain and Italy have started to do. The time when all European heads of state tried to play nice with the mercurial American president is decidedly over.

Early in the day, Trump made more menacing comments about taking over Greenland and repeatedly criticized Germany, Italy, Britain and France for not helping the United States in its war with Iran.

Spain in particular came in for a drubbing from Trump on Wednesday morning. “I don’t want anything to do with Spain,” he said.

His spat with the Spaniards started when they refused Trump’s demand that European nations to raise their military spending, then kicked into a higher gear after Spain denied the use of its military bases to U.S. forces attacking Iran.

“Cut off all trade with Spain, please, including visits,” Trump said.

He did not say what he meant by visits, and he did not acknowledge that the 27-nation European Union, which includes Spain, negotiates trade jointly.

Trump went on to call the Spanish “hopeless, bad people” and reiterated several more times that the United States would no longer trade with the country of 50 million people.

The president struck a sharply different tone at the evening news conference closing out the gathering. “This was a tremendously successful summit,” he said, thanking Rutte “for doing a fantastic job.”

“Spain has been very bad,” he added, “but you know, Italy has been good, and almost all of the countries have been good. They just had a bad moment.”

Rutte himself said the summit had solidified “a stronger, a fairer and a more capable NATO.” And he tried to soft-pedal the American president’s attacks on allies.

“It not only makes us stronger in the end; we also come together,” Rutte said. “Today is evidence of that, and I always know that President Trump and the U.S. has completely committed to NATO.”

he United States trade deficit in goods and services widened to $77.6 billion in May as the U.S. imported more goods than it sold abroad.

Imports rose, climbing 3.3% from the previous month, to $395.3 billion, as the United States imported more foreign pharmaceuticals, cellphones, cars and equipment to fill out new data centers.

U.S. exports of goods and services fell 3.2% in the month, to $317.7 billion, according to data the Commerce Department released earlier this week. That included exports of gold, natural gas, computers and pharmaceuticals, which all fell from the previous month. The drop in goods exports was offset somewhat by an increase in service exports, including more revenue earned from foreigners traveling to the United States.

Exports and imports of services both hit a record in May, as did U.S. petroleum exports. Goods imports also hit a record high in the month.

The combination increased the monthly trade deficit, the gap between what the United States imports and what it exports. The U.S. trade deficit in goods and services bounced up more than 42% from the prior month.

The Trump administration has sought to reduce the trade deficit with a vast swath of tariffs on foreign goods. Those levies have caused imports, exports and the trade deficit to fluctuate wildly since President Donald Trump came into office.

On average, the monthly trade deficit in goods has been $96 billion in the 16 months since Trump returned to the White House. That’s down about 5% from the monthly average in the 16 months before his second term began. Imports of some goods have fallen, but strong U.S. demand for artificial intelligence technology, foreign medicines and other goods not made in the U.S. have helped to prop up trade.

The war in Iran has also affected trade, as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz scrambled supply chains for oil fertilizer, product packaging and helium. In April, the U.S. trade deficit fell on a monthly basis, as the closure boosted U.S. exports of oil and petroleum to a new monthly record.

U.S. importers are bracing for another significant shift in trade policy. The administration has been working on a new round of levies after the Supreme Court in February struck down the double-digit tariffs Trump imposed globally last year.

In February, the administration issued a flat 10% duty on every trading partner as a stopgap measure, but the authority for that tariff is expected to expire this month.

To replace it, the Trump administration has been preparing two major trade investigations using a provision known as Section 301, which would most likely return tariff rates to the levels seen before the Supreme Court decision. One investigation relates to other countries’ restrictions on importing forced labor goods, while the other looks at the tactics countries use to unfairly prop up their factory sectors.

As Messi dominates the World Cup, a global war rages for Maradona’s ghost

In an army of Lionel Messis outside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Juan Manuel García stood apart.

Like the other fans, he wore No. 10 on his back, but that’s where the resemblance ended. García’s No. 10 belonged instead to Diego Maradona, who remains, in death, soccer’s ultimate superhero and an enduring symbol of Argentina.

García, 40, from Rosario in central Ar-

gentina, was about to watch Messi extend his streak of scoring in every game of the 2026 World Cup as Argentina completed a sweep of the group stage. “Messi might be now be considered a better player, but Maradona is Argentina — and Argentina is Maradona,” he said.

That reverence is everywhere back home. Walls across Buenos Aires are covered with murals of Maradona, and his first club, Argentinos Juniors, has become a living shrine. Big rigs are trimmed with images of Maradona waiting for Messi in heaven. Fans at the

World Cup carry enormous flags depicting him from stadium to stadium.

But while Messi’s genius pays off handsomely as sponsors line up for a piece of his celebrity, Maradona’s image is curiously absent from major campaigns. That is the result of a strange, yearslong legal battle spanning continents, jurisdictions and patent offices, one that has split his family apart and left investors fighting over the right to use his likeness.

In death, Maradona’s legacy has proved as chaotic as his life.

Each team is entitled to two challenges. An additional challenge will be granted in the event of extra innings.

All games will be streamed on YouTube. Additionally, one game per game day will be broadcast on WIPR Channel 6.

No games will be rescheduled after July 25 due to the Puerto Rico National Team’s commitment to the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games.

Team Puerto Rico will travel to compete in the Dominican Republic from July 28 to Aug. 8.

Unlike Messi, who has enjoyed a smooth pathway to stardom on and off the field, Maradona lived a life of excess — glorious highs shadowed by criticism and controversy. His death in 2020 brought an outpouring of grief from millions of Argentines, but it just as quickly gave way to recrimination and legal disputes that continue today.

A family at war

Maradona died without a will after undergoing brain surgery, leaving five acknowledged children. Former associates claimed he had willed the right to exploit his brand and likeness to his sisters rather than his children. A fraud case is ongoing against those associates, who are accused of illegally profiting from his name.

The rights his children insist belong to them under Argentine law have instead become the currency of a bitter family rupture and litigation. Contact between the children and their aunts now runs through lawyers and the courts. “Basically, they’ve decided to be against their nephews and nieces because of money,” said Jana Maradona, 30, one of his daughters.

Sitting in her lawyer’s office — the children have hired several attorneys — Jana Maradona described feeling despair, anger and disbelief. The family keeps discovering new products bearing her father’s likeness or trademarked name: chips, energy drinks, wine, cigars, even socks.

At the center of the dispute is Sattvica, a company set up on Maradona’s behalf in 2015 by his lawyer and longtime aide, Matias Morla — a figure many in Argentina accuse of having controlled the player in his final years.

Morla defended the arrangement. Maradona had always supported his sisters financially, he said, and knew that “in his absence they would not have a dignified life.”

Rita Maradona, the sister most involved in the business, sent a brief email in response to questions, agreeing with Morla’s account. He said the children had a “terrible” relationship with their father before his death and accused them of exaggerating claims that he was cut off from them.

Guillermo Cóppola, Maradona’s former manager and friend, disagreed. Morla “entered Diego’s life and pushed many people out,” he said.

A ruling in January by a Buenos Aires court confirmed the children as heirs and ordered Sattvica to stop new business and route revenue from existing contracts into a court-supervised account. But those sales have continued, the lawyers for the children said, echoing allegations made in court proceedings, and they believe many more contracts remain undisclosed.

A brand worth fighting for

On and off the field, the diminutive Maradona was box office: a symbol of rebellion, reverence and controversy like few others. Those contradictions crystallized in a legendary performance against England at the 1986 World Cup when he scored the opening goal — the sleight of hand he later called the “Hand of God,” and then minutes later raced through the England defense to score what is remembered as the goal of the century.

Eight years later, his career at the very highest level effectively ended when he became the last player to be banned for doping at a World Cup. Paternity suits, Mafia ties and struggles with addiction damaged his reputation in some eyes; to others, especially the working class, those flaws only deepened their devotion.

deals. All of them believed having a piece of the Maradona legend could be worth a fortune.

Among the most prominent is Stefano Ceci, a Neapolitan pizzeria owner who became a close friend of Maradona’s and has spent years since his death signing licensing deals in his name. To prove his standing, Ceci produced a contract along with a suitcase of mementos from their life together — including a bag containing Maradona’s hair.

Lawyers for the family have argued in court proceedings that contract was altered to grant Ceci far more rights than intended. Dimitri Russo, Ceci’s lawyer, said the contract is valid. He described a deep friendship between the men. Ceci has tattoos of Maradona, named his daughter MaraDona, and a dog named Diego.

Many of Ceci’s deals have led to legal troubles and financial losses for those on the other side of them, including a British businessperson who spent $200,000 in 2022 to launch a Maradona digital token, known as an NFT, only to be met with rival claims from other companies asserting the same rights.

The highest-profile case involved Electronic Arts and its “EA FC” video game franchise. EA signed Maradona in 2017, but after his death, competing claims over his likeness forced the company to pull him from the game; he was restored in February 2025 after EA made a deal with his children. The Italian club Napoli faced similar legal disputes for selling jerseys bearing Maradona’s image after his death.

Two investors — an Italian businessperson, Alfonso Di Prisco, and a British entrepreneur, Sanjay Wadhwani, each spent hundreds of thousands of dollars seeking to secure exclusive global rights to Maradona’s image and ended up in disputes over the terms. Wadhwani, who signed on as a partner at Sattvica, estimates investors may have lost $5 million to competing ownership claims.

“Sometimes you get burned, sometimes you don’t,” Wadhwani said. He now believes the rights belong to Maradona’s children.

None of it has slowed Argentina’s pursuit of a fourth World Cup title. If anything, the tournament offers clarity — a chance to honor the man many still consider their country’s purest symbol, undiminished by the legal wreckage he left behind.

“For me, Maradona is a god of football — a god with flaws, a god with mistakes — and that’s what makes him much more human than any other footballer on the planet,” García said, proud to be dressed as his idol.

All of that has made his name enormously attractive to investors — and perilous. Companies from Britain to Italy, India and the United Arab Emirates have all been trying to do business with the Maradona brand. The New York Times spoke with six people who each claimed to have exclusive licensing
