Foundation: First ship carrying aid departs to Venezuela

The Multinational Foundation on Wednesday announced the departure of the first ship carrying humanitarian aid to Venezuela, marking a new chapter in the solidarity initiative that has mobilized thousands of people in Puerto Rico to support the Venezuelan people in the aftermath of the twin earthquakes that struck the South American country on June 24.

The maritime shipment follows the first cargo of supplies that departed by air on July 11, expanding the reach of the humanitarian mission. Ten railcars containing some 110,100 pounds of essential supplies departed from the dock, the result of the commitment and generosity of thousands of individuals, volunteers, businesses and organizations that stepped up to help.

The shipment, which departed late Tuesday night, includes food, hygiene products for children and adults, diapers, wipes, personal grooming items, first aid supplies, medical and surgical equipment, wheelchairs, crutches, canes, serums and other essential items that will benefit vulnerable families.

The mission is being carried out in partnership with Caritas Puerto Rico, which will coordinate the safe delivery of the aid to Caritas Venezuela for distribution among the communities with the greatest needs. The vessel is expected to arrive at its destination on Aug. 18.

The maritime transport of the railcars is being carried out in partnership with CMA-CGM as part of the humanitarian logistics operation. The effort has also been supported by multiple partners who joined forces to make the mission a reality: Caribbean Produce Exchange assisted with the cross-docking and transport to the dock, Anytime Transport donated the transport of the railcars from the collection center at Hiram Bithorn Stadium, the Sover-

Ten railcars containing some 110,100 pounds of essential supplies departed from the dock bound for Venezuela on Tuesday night, marking a new chapter in the solidarity initiative that has mobilized thousands of people in Puerto Rico to support those gravely impacted by the twin earthquakes that struck the South American country on June 24.

eign Grand Lodge of Puerto Rico facilitated the connection with Caritas Venezuela and Intership donated railcars for moving the merchandise from the docks.

“For us, it represents hope put into action,” said Josette Barnés, spokesperson for the Multinational Foundation. “Each box that leaves carries much more than supplies; it carries the affection, solidarity, and commitment of thousands of people who decided to help.”

The Foundation emphasized that Tuesday’s shipment would not have been possible without the extraordinary response of the people of Puerto Rico, who came together to donate essential items, offer their time as volunteers and support the logistics of the operation.

president: Remarks didn’t indicate he’s seeking the governorship

Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz denied on Wednesday that his statement regarding the departure of La Fortaleza Chief of Staff Francisco Domenech Fernández and Deputy Chief of Staff Itza García Rodríguez was driven by an ambition to run for governor; instead, he asserted that his remarks aimed to foster a new phase of collaboration between the executive branch and the Legislative Assembly.

“Some people, seeking to add a political spin or imply a bid for office, tried to portray this as a political strategy aimed in that direction -- but nothing could be further from the truth,” Rivera Schatz stated at the start of a press conference.

The Senate leader said his message sought to promote a “fresh start” to address issues such as permit system reform, tax reform, the energy crisis, the potable water supply, protections for the elderly, the strengthening of municipalities, and the adoption of artificial intelligence tools, in addition to improving communication between the branches of government.

Rivera Schatz maintained that the departures of Domenech and García were the result of an investigation being conducted by the Panel on the Independent Special Prosecutor, rather than a voluntary decision by either official.

“They […] are not leaving -- as some have tried to suggest -with honors and accolades,” he said. “They are leaving because they have been implicated in illegal and unethical acts. That is the irrefutable reality.”

During the exchange with the press, he criticized the fact that Domenech would remain in office until Aug. 7 and García until Aug. 15, the dates their resignations take effect, which he said he believes “is also an error in judgment” and that “they should have left immediately.”

When asked directly if he would seek the gubernatorial nomination in 2028, Rivera Schatz avoided ruling it out, though he insisted that the issue was not currently on the agenda.

“No one can rule anything out. I’m in no rush,” he said. “We have all the time in the world. Political parties need to place people in positions where they have the capacity to win and to govern.”

Claro to invest $35 million to connect southern PR to AMX-1 submarine cable system

Claro Puerto Rico CEO Enrique Ortiz de Montellano announced on Wednesday a $35 million investment to extend the AMX-1 submarine cable system to Ponce. The move will make the city the first redundant international internet connection point located outside of Puerto Rico’s northern region.

“Today, connectivity is much more than just internet access. It is the foundation upon which businesses, hospitals, schools, entertainment, and the daily lives of millions of people operate,” Ortiz de Montellano said in a written statement. “With the arrival of the AMX-1 system

in southern Puerto Rico, we continue to build infrastructure prepared for the country’s digital growth and the technological needs of future generations.”

According to the company, the project will increase data transmission capacity, diversify international communication routes, and strengthen the resilience of the island’s telecommunications infrastructure against storms, hurricanes, power outages and other contingencies.

The AMX-1 system, owned by América Móvil and built by Alcatel Submarine Networks, spans some 19,300 kilometers and links Puerto Rico to the United States, Mexico, Colombia,

School Journalism Society honored by Hatillo Legislature

Aspecial commission was held in the Hatillo Municipal Legislature earlier this week with the purpose of recognizing the School Journalism Society of Timoteo Delgado Middle School of Hatillo for its outstanding work in promoting student journalism, developing critical thinking and strengthening communication as a tool for service and education.

During the event in the Gilfredy Acevedo Assembly Hall, Hatillo Mayor Carlos E. Román Román congratulated the students, teachers and advisers of the School Journalism Society for their commitment to academic excellence and the responsible dissemination of information. He also emphasized that such initiatives foster

leadership, creativity and active youth participation in matters of interest to their community.

Municipal Legislature Vice President Joel García Pérez recognized the effort and dedication of the students, highlighting that school journalism constitutes a valuable platform for developing informed, responsible citizens committed to the truth and public service.

Miguel Alicea Torres, the alternate spokesperson for the Popular Democratic Party delegation in the legislative body, expressed his appreciation to the society for proudly representing Timoteo Delgado Middle School and for becoming an example of the talent, discipline and potential of Hatillo’s youth.

Similarly, Juan J. Peraza Batista, the New Progressive Party delegation spokesperson, highlighted the importance of supporting

spaces that promote free expression, analytical thinking and the development of future generations of communicators, urging students to continue cultivating the values of ethics and responsibility in the practice of journalism.

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón stated that the project would strengthen the island’s critical infrastructure and increase its capacity to attract investment and develop high-value industries. Meanwhile, Ponce Mayor Marlese Sifre Rodríguez affirmed that the project positions the municipality as a strategic hub for technological and economic development in the Caribbean.

Claro reported that the cable will feature a transmission capacity of 100 gigabits per second and a total capacity of up to 90 terabits per second, serving as part of one of the Americas’ leading connectivity platforms.

Hatillo Municipal Legislature President Héctor J. Aguilar Romero thanked the students, family members, teaching staff and special guests for their presence, reiterating the legislative body’s commitment to continue recognizing the achievements of Hatillo’s youth and promoting initiatives that strengthen education, leadership and the integral development of new generations.

Amgen to pay $74 million to settle suit linked to Puerto Rico operations

Amgen has agreed to pay $74 million to settle a lawsuit brought by investors who say the company failed to disclose a potential $10.7 billion tax bill from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), a liability tied to profits generated through its Puerto Rico manufacturing operations.

Fierce Pharma reported the information. The settlement request was filed Monday in federal court in the Southern District of New York. Investors argued that Amgen kept the tax dispute hidden between 2020 and 2022,

preventing the public from understanding the scale of the company’s legal and financial exposure.

Judge John Cronin, who rejected Amgen’s attempt to dismiss the case in 2024, wrote that the “sheer size of the potential liability” meant investors were entitled to clearer information, according to Fierce Pharma.

In a statement, Amgen said it continues to believe the claims “are without merit” and emphasized that the settlement does not include any admission of wrongdoing. The company said it chose to settle to avoid a lengthy and costly legal fight.

The underlying tax dispute, however, remains unresolved. The IRS argues that Amgen shifted tens of billions of dollars in profits to its Puerto Rico subsidiary over several years, reducing the amount of taxes it owed in the United States. Amgen operates one of the island’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturing sites.

In 2022, the company disclosed that it had received a notice of deficiency for tax years 2013 through 2015, with the IRS seeking to increase Amgen’s taxable income enough to generate a $5.1 billion bill plus interest. The agency also proposed roughly $2 billion in penalties. A similar notice for 2010 through

2012 carried a $3.6 billion assessment, and audits for 2016 through 2018 are still underway. Amgen has pushed back on the IRS’s findings, arguing that the agency undervalues the importance of its Puerto Rico operations and that the proposed adjustments are overstated by about $2 billion.

The settlement ends the investor lawsuit but leaves open the question of how much Amgen may ultimately owe the federal government — a decision that could take years to resolve and carries significant implications for one of the world’s largest biotechnology companies.

NPP mayors publicly rally behind governor following resignations of top officials

For the first time in over a year, a group of New Progressive Party (NPP) mayors voiced strong support on Wednesday for Gov. Jenniffer González Colón, highlighting what they described as steady fiscal management, accelerated reconstruction projects, and improved coordination between central and municipal governments.

The show of support comes amid political turbulence in La Fortaleza following Tuesday’s high‑profile resignations of La Fortaleza Chief of Staff Francisco Domenech Fernández and Assistant Chief of Staff Itza García Rodríguez after a panel of the Special Independent Prosecutor’s Office agreed to investigate them. The governor has yet to appoint their successors. Before the resignations, none of the NPP mayors came out in support of the governor amid allegations of corruption against Domenech and García and calls for transparency and investigation from political leaders across parties.

The mayors emphasized that the González Colón administration has secured two consecutive budgets with the federal Financial Oversight and Management Board an unprecedented milestone since the board’s creation. They argued that the agreements have provided stability and allowed reconstruction and development projects to advance across Puerto Rico. As the report notes, the mayors said the administration’s work “continues to ‘produce concrete results’ for the benefit of citizens.”

Bayamón Mayor Ramón Luis Rivera Cruz

pointed to several longstanding issues the administration has addressed, including payments tied to the Carrera Magisterial, granting permanent status to school directors, and settling outstanding obligations with police officers.

“Her administration has attended to historical claims by paying the debt of the Teaching Career ... and strengthened public safety with the opening of a new Police Academy,” Rivera Cruz said.

The mayors also cited more than $7 billion in water and sewer system modernization, widespread road and bridge reconstruction, and the expansion of the bilingual education program from 36 to 119 schools. Social initiatives such as strengthening the Amas de Llaves

home‑care program and investments in public housing communities were also highlighted.

Maunabo Mayor Ángel Omar Lafuente Amaro called the funding for the Amas de Llaves program “invaluable support” for elderly residents, while others praised what they described as González Colón’s hands‑on leadership and responsiveness to municipal needs.

Some mayors offered explicit political endorsements. Naranjito Mayor Orlando Ortiz Chevres reaffirmed his support “both today and in November 2028,” while others pointed to specific projects in their towns from flood‑mitigation work in Cabo Rojo to road improvements in Villalba and educational initiatives in Las Piedras.

San Lorenzo Mayor Jaime Alverio Ramos said progress in his municipality “has not stopped” during the administration’s first 19 months, crediting alignment between local and central government priorities.

The NPP delegation in the island House of Representatives, led by Speaker Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez, echoed the party’s mayors later on Wednesday in voicing their support for the González Colón administration’s work over the past 19 months, highlighting the historic tax benefit of $554 million directed mainly to the working class this year, according to an NPP press report.

“The Administration and the Legislature have worked to provide the people with the first tax relief in 15 years and the most substantial in three decades; that is two generations of Puerto Ricans who had not seen a reduction in their tax

burden of this magnitude,” the House speaker said. “Over 690,000 taxpayers were impacted by this initiative. …”

Co Deputy House Speaker Yashira Lebrón Rodríguez added that “[w]e had the best start of classes (Back to School) in the modern history of the island, recognized even by the political opposition.”

“Schools have now been rehabilitated since March, not in summer as was the custom before,” she said. “With this, they were ready in August 2025 and will be ready in three weeks to receive our children; that is a tangible and real achievement.”

Co Deputy Speaker Ángel Peña Ramírez highlighted that the “impact the Administration has had with children with special needs has been a historic one.”

“Led by our Speaker, the non profit organization Ser de Puerto Rico already has its annual recurring contribution to continue helping children with autism, among other conditions,” he said. “In the same way, the allocation to non profit entities has been approved and advanced during the first session of the year, unlike past four year periods that took place between August and September. This is a tangible achievement of real agility in favor of our people.”

Majority Leader José “Pichy” Torres Zamora noted that “not only did we remove the Police [Bureau] from the Department of Public Safety, but we gave [police] a substantial pay raise, the first in more than a decade; another real achievement.”

Governor says political turmoil overshadowed her accomplishments, confirms Domenech to lead her campaign

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón said Wednesday that recent public controversies have drowned out her administration’s accomplishments and said that this was the reason she asked Francisco Domenech Fernández to step down as La Fortaleza chief of staff.

In a radio interview, González Colón said the disputes surrounding La Fortaleza were eclipsing the government’s progress.

“The noise, all these public controversies literally diminish and overshadow the work and the management that is being done,” she said. “The people are seeing the work, the work is there … but the noise literally swallows all this effort.”

The governor added that she will now begin assembling her political team ahead of the New Progressive Party (NPP) primaries, and confirmed that Domenech Fernández will take charge of her campaign once he leaves government. She noted that he has served as her campaign director in past political efforts and will reprise that role as she prepares for the primary season, which she said

has effectively begun early.

“It is evident that the primaries started ahead of time, so I have to start putting together my team to address that matter,” González Colón said, adding that Domenech will be part of the group once he transitions out of public service.

The governor also said a successor for Domenech has already been selected. While she did not disclose the name, she said the designation will be announced “at the appropriate moment,” emphasizing that the timing of personnel decisions “has its reason for being.”

A new appointee will also be named to lead the Puerto Rico Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Authority, she confirmed.

González Colón defended the presence of Justice Secretary Lourdes Gómez Torres during Tuesday’s announcement of the departures of Domenech Fernández and Itza García Rodríguez as assistant chief of staff. According to the administration, Domenech will leave his post on Aug. 7, while García Rodríguez will step down on Aug. 15.

The governor insisted that despite the political turbulence,

her administration’s work continues and will not be derailed by controversy.

He got fired from FEMA. His return could mark a new era for disasters.

When Cameron Hamilton took the helm of the Federal Emergency Management Agency at the start of President Donald Trump’s second term, he wasn’t an obvious choice: He had worked in emergency situations in combat zones and on the U.S.-Mexico border but hadn’t handled natural disasters.

But he wanted to serve in the Trump administration and help safeguard FEMA, he told a podcast last year. Hamilton, a former Navy SEAL, believed so strongly in the agency’s mission, in fact, that he told a House hearing in May 2025 that he disagreed with Trump’s suggestion that FEMA should “go away.” He was fired as acting director the next day.

Barely a year later, Hamilton, 40, is back, poised to lead the disaster agency. The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee was expected to advance his nomination Wednesday, setting the stage for a full Senate vote.

Hamilton’s return illustrates not just a reversal of fortunes but also how FEMA’s standing has improved within the administration as it became clear that shuttering the agency was unpopular among many states.

Some storm-prone communities still worry about the administration’s cuts to FEMA’s staff and its talk of shifting more responsibility for disasters to state governments. And it’s not clear whether the agency — and Hamilton — are ready for hurricanes, floods or a potentially extreme El Niño weather pattern.

“He does not know fundamental operational aspects of FEMA,” said Samantha Montano, a professor of emergency management at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and a frequent critic of the Trump administration’s disaster management policy. “He has not been in the field long enough for that to be possible.”

Hamilton also appears to lack the extensive experience in emergency management that is required by law.

After failures in FEMA’s response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Congress required that the agency’s leader must have a “demonstrated ability in and knowledge of emergency management and homeland security” and at least five years of “executive leadership and management experience in the public or private sector.”

Under previous administrations, including in Trump’s first term, FEMA chiefs had decades of experience leading disaster response in city or state governments.

Hamilton does not. He served in the Navy

SEALs for a decade before working for eight years as an emergency management specialist at the State Department and as a division director at the Homeland Security Department.

In those roles, administration officials said, he planned and carried out crisis response work, kept U.S. personnel and facilities safe in dangerous environments, and managed more than 4,000 emergency medical technicians and first responders.

“I did not pretend or presume by any means to be the most qualified individual” to lead FEMA when he became acting administrator, Hamilton told the American Emergency podcast, produced by WNYC’s “On the Media.”

FEMA and White House officials said Hamilton’s background did not conflict with the post-Katrina law.

At Hamilton’s confirmation hearing last month, none of the senators questioned his experience. And many emergency managers across the country support Hamilton’s confirmation. They are counting on him to trim bureaucracy and make changes that would speed aid — and restore stability after months of upheaval.

“I think Cameron has proven himself as a leader,” said Josh Morton, president of the International Association of Emergency Managers. “He very much listens to what local emergency managers and state emergency managers have to say.”

A remarkable resurrection

Hamilton’s ouster last year struck many

experts as the surest sign yet that a broken but essential agency was being dismantled.

FEMA helps states and local governments respond to overwhelming emergencies. For most of the past three decades, that work has cost about $12 billion annually. But as climate change intensifies some types of disasters and more people move into vulnerable areas, the price tag has often surged into the tens of billions of dollars.

Trump and Kristi Noem, who was homeland security secretary at the time, both mused publicly about scaling back or eliminating FEMA last year as they shrank its workforce by about 20%.

So Hamilton made waves last May when he told a congressional panel, “I do not believe it is in the best interest of the American people to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency.” Noem fired him the next day, then oversaw a significant slowdown in the flow of federal disaster aid.

Hamilton posted on the social platform X that while his departure “was earlier than I hoped,” he wasn’t stepping away from emergency management. He shared a video message he had delivered to FEMA staff in which he urged them to “find the most innovative and creative methods available so that we can deliver assistance to survivors.”

Many emergency managers say he kept that up after his dismissal. He took a job with a contractor that works with disaster agencies

in Texas and Florida, two large storm-prone states. At emergency management conferences, he discussed how FEMA could become leaner and more efficient.

FEMA officials declined to make Hamilton available for an interview. Administration officials did not respond to a request to interview the homeland security secretary, Markwayne Mullin, whose department oversees FEMA.

In an interview with the podcast American Emergency conducted last fall, Hamilton described himself as a victim of ongoing clashes with Noem and her top adviser, Corey Lewandowski. He said he had “never encountered such unprofessionalism in my life” and remembered expecting to be fired even before he spoke out about FEMA’s future on Capitol Hill.

In response to questions from The New York Times, Lewandowski called Hamilton “a constantly outspoken critic” of the Trump administration who pushed for the status quo rather than “leaner and more accountable programs.” Noem did not respond to a request for comment.

Despite that conflict, Hamilton had allies in the White House. Tom Homan, Trump’s border security adviser, for example, had endorsed Hamilton’s unsuccessful bid for Congress from Virginia in 2024. Later that year, Hamilton kept armed guards outside Homan’s home amid threats over Trump’s plans for immigration policy.

So after Trump fired Noem in March, Hamilton was ready to return. Noem had exerted such control over the agency that her departure left an opening for someone who was clearly a break from her approach — someone like Hamilton.

How FEMA could transform

Even before Noem was dismissed, an administration task force had concluded the agency should be maintained. Its report, issued six weeks after Mullin took over the Homeland Security Department, called for delivering disaster aid more quickly, reducing FEMA’s role in long-term recovery and pushing states to manage more disasters on their own.

At his confirmation hearing, Hamilton pledged to distribute disaster aid faster and increase accountability for spending.

“We would need to strike a new balance to encourage cost reasonableness and cost savings,” he said.

Mary Ann Tierney, who served as the top career official at FEMA during Hamilton’s stint as acting administrator, said she had spoken with him about shifting more of FEMA’s work to its regional offices and to states. The idea was

Mamdani calls Netanyahu a ‘war criminal’ and calls on US to arrest him

Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday night challenged the federal government to execute an international arrest warrant against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, calling him a “war criminal” and “the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people” in a striking video statement.

The mayor said the city Law Department explored whether the New York Police Department could arrest the Israeli prime minister during his expected visit to the city in September but that the city did not have “independent legal authority” to do so.

The mayor’s announcement came days after he told Lulu Garcia-Navarro last week on “The Interview,” a New York Times show, that he had been in “active conversation” with the city’s lawyers about executing a warrant issued for Netanyahu in 2024 by the International Criminal Court.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani speaks to reporters in New York, July 7, 2026. Mamdani on Tuesday, July 21, challenged the federal government to execute an international law arrest warrant against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel while acknowledging that New York City did not have “independent legal authority” to do so during the prime minister’s expected visit to the city in September. (Dave Sanders/The New York Times)

On Tuesday, Mamdani said in the video that those conversations had led his administration to determine that it did “not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant.”

Seated between the flags of the United States and New York City, Mamdani looked directly into the camera and solemnly told New Yorkers that Israel’s prime minister had no place visiting New York.

“Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large,” Mamdani said. “While we cannot end the genocide on our own we can decide whether our silence will become another weapon, and we can examine every tool we have to defend the humanity and dignity of all people.”

There appears to be no chance of federal law enforcement arresting Netanyahu in the near future. President Donald Trump said Monday that the Israeli leader, whose country is a longtime U.S. ally, would not be arrested in the United States “in any way, shape, or form.”

And the United States is not a member of the International Criminal Court, which blunts the impact of the court’s warrant.

that FEMA’s headquarters had become bloated and that states could provide help more efficiently, often on their own dime. But Tierney stressed that such changes would need to occur gradually to give communities time to prepare.

No matter who runs the agency, emergency managers

On Tuesday night, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, criticized Mamdani’s video in a statement posted online.

“Enough with the blood libels,” Danon said. “You were elected to serve New Yorkers, not Hamas’ propaganda. Do your job!”

Mamdani had said during his mayoral campaign that he would order the Police Department to arrest Netanyahu if he were to visit New York, as the prime minister is expected to do in September for the United Nations General Assembly.

But the legal ability of the mayor to order such a move has long been in doubt. After he discussed the possibility with The Magazine last week, Mamdani was denounced by Netanyahu’s office, which said he “should focus on fixing the damage his policies have caused New York.”

“Mamdani appears interested in diverting public attention from his follies and attacking the leader of the Jewish state and the only democracy in the Middle East,” the prime minister’s office said in a statement Sunday.

The mayor was also denounced on Monday by Danon, who said in an address to the General Assembly that there was “no legal basis” for Mamdani to order the arrest of Netanyahu. Danon accused him of engaging in “political theater” to energize his “radical base.”

The international court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant, in 2024 on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip, where more than 70,000 people have been killed in a war that began after the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel.

The ICC warrants accused both Netanyahu and Gallant of having “intentionally and knowingly deprived” the population of Gaza of food, water, fuel and medicine, which both Netanyahu and Gallant have denied.

The court also issued an arrest warrant for Hamas’ military chief, Muhammad Deif, for crimes against humanity, but Israel said it had killed Deif in an airstrike before the warrant could be issued.

expect it to change soon.

The administration has indicated it wants to raise the threshold for when disaster damage warrants aid, which could mean significantly fewer communities qualify for federal help, according to a coalition of former FEMA officials and local leaders called Sabotaging Our Safety.

“It’s going to make community rebuilding very hard,” said Davante Lewis, a Democrat elected to the Louisiana Public Service Commission in 2022 and a member of the coalition’s board.

Israel’s conduct during the war in Gaza has been described as genocide by Israeli and international human rights groups, as well as by two separate U.N. commissions, one of which issued its findings last month.

Israel has rejected those findings, and Netanyahu’s office said Sunday that “Israel has taken unprecedented wartime measures to minimize harm to civilians while confronting Hamas.”

But Israel’s actions in Gaza have left it deeply isolated on the global stage and increasingly unpopular in the United States, its most important ally.

According to the Pew Research Center, polls show that a majority of Americans now hold a negative view of Israel, including majorities of adults under age 50 in both political parties. Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, that number rises to 80%.

The quick-fix fantasies of the world’s strongmen

Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu and Vladimir Putin are drastically different men, but they do have one important thing in common: Each thinks he is the smartest person in any room he enters. Alas, though, because they have all done the dumbest thing you can do as a leader — surround yourself with sycophants — they have all blundered into deadend wars from which they can extricate themselves today only by eating a banquet of crow.

Watch out. There is nothing more dangerous than a reckless leader faced with a plate of crow: Sometimes his instinct is to double down on a losing strategy instead.

Let’s start with the Israeli prime minister. The tell that Netanyahu has gone off the rails — and taken the leadership of the famed Israeli intelligence agency, the Mossad, with him — is reflected in two decisions he made that were flat-out crazy: The first is that Israel could topple the Tehran regime with one big blow from the air, and the second was that it could choose Iran’s new leader.

The Mossad is very good at hunting and killing Israel’s foes, in large part because it is very skilled at recruiting disgruntled citizens in Lebanon, Iran, the West Bank and elsewhere in the Arab world — that is, people who hate their regimes and are willing to work with Israel to topple them. The problem is that these very same agents, motivated either by grievance or money, tend to exaggerate how weak their regime is and how

easy bringing it down would be.

They want Israel to do the dirty work for them. The result is that a dupe like Trump, who doesn’t know any history, assumes that because the Mossad is good at assassinating people, it is equally good at predicting what will happen the morning after they are dead.

That explains why, after the White House meeting in February when Netanyahu and the Mossad’s director at the time, David Barnea, essentially argued that if Israel and the United States assassinated Iran’s top leaders, the government would fall and nice people would take over, Trump did not laugh them out of the room. The president apparently assumed that because the Mossad had super assassination powers it also had super analytical powers, and therefore Iran would tumble into his lap the same way Venezuela did when the U.S. removed its president, Nicolás Maduro.

As my colleagues Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan reported in their must-read book, “Regime Change,” CIA director John Ratcliffe used one word to describe Netanyahu’s Iran regime change scenarios: “farcical.” Trump, confident that he knew better, ignored him and others — and has been paying the price ever since.

The even bigger tell that both Netanyahu and his intelligence agency had become drunk with power was another incredible story the Times uncovered: that Mossad had been grooming former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to take over Iran after the government of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was wiped out. As my colleagues reported: “Israel’s decision to build a regime-change plan around Mr. Ahmadinejad is an extraordinary twist in the saga of the country’s relations with the former president, who was known for accelerating Iran’s nuclear program, calling regularly for the destruction of Israel and denying the Holocaust.”

The sheer madness that Israel thought it could install Ahmadinejad — and that the Iranian body politic would not reject him the way a human body rejects an organ implant — is insane. Did Netanyahu and the Mossad really think that proud, nationalistic Iranians, even those who hate the clerics governing them, would say: “Oh, thank you, Bibi, for installing our next leader”? The vanity and overreach in thinking that 7.2 million Israeli Jews could decide who would rule more than 90 million Iranian Muslims is astounding.

Trump and Netanyahu are in good company with Putin, who drank his own Kool-Aid by assuming that Ukrainians were all dying to become part of Mother Russia again and that the democratically elected regime in Kyiv would easily fall.

“Putin’s most fundamental error was believing his own narrative that Ukrainians and Russians were ‘one people’ and that Ukrainian independence was merely an artificial Western construct,” Robbin Laird, a military analyst, noted last year. “This ideological blind spot led him to expect that Russian forces would be welcomed as liberators.”

In a perfect echo of what happened in Iran, Russian intelligence appeared to have relied too heavily “on pro-Russian

sources who told Moscow what it wanted to hear,” Laird said, “rather than providing accurate ground truth about Ukrainian sentiment and capabilities.”

Netanyahu, for all his tactical victories over Hamas, Hezbollah and Tehran, has not converted any of it into a new strategic reality for Israel. That would require him to make clear that his military operations in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Iran were meant to make the region safe for an Israeli-Palestinian peace.

Instead, what the whole world sees is Netanyahu trying to make the region safe for an Israeli annexation of Gaza and the West Bank, and his being ready to throw away everything else — normalization with Saudi Arabia, the support of many young Americans, the support of the Democratic Party, the support of Western Europe and the independence of Israel’s judiciary — to get it.

Meanwhile, Trump has weakened and isolated America by lazily choosing to invade Iran with no allies, no international legitimation and no Plan B to eliminate Tehran’s ability to build a weapon of mass destruction. Instead, Trump enabled Iran to discover two incredibly cheap and effective weapons of mass disruption: controlling the Strait of Hormuz and bombing America’s Persian Gulf allies nearly every time Trump bombs Iran.

And Putin — instead of doing the hard work of making Russia a free and open society that Ukrainians actually might be attracted to — has turned what was a weak Russian democracy into a full-blown police state, with a vulnerable petro-economy. Today, Russia is nowhere to be found in the AI revolution. It is as if cars were just invented and Putin said he’d prefer to invest in more horses — and his 19th-century fantasy of a unified Russian Motherland.

What we have today is three leaders all now trying to bomb their way out of a blind alley.

But let us not forget the twisted, cynical, incompetent leaders who have been running Iran since 1979. They, too, are in their own cul-de-sac. Instead of empowering their talented population, Iran’s clerical dictators chose to ensconce themselves in power for 47 years by gunning down opponents, cramming puritanical Islam down the throats of their people and wasting billions of dollars trying to destroy Israel.

Bottom line, eventually all these conflicts will end in negotiations, because none of these leaders can sustain their stupid wars indefinitely. The only question is when they will have to call the waiter over and say: “Young man, could you please bring me a plate of crow.”

Making an album to dispel stereotypes, she found a lifeline

Chinchorros, hammocks traditionally handwoven by the Wayuu Indigenous community, hang in many homes in La Guajira, the arid peninsula straddling Colombia and Venezuela where many of the group’s members live.

When Lido Pimienta, a Colombian Canadian musician, thinks about beauty, she tends to think about that object: how it feels to wake up cocooned in its netting, the geometric shapes the sun carves as its rays sneak through the hammock’s woven patterns and cast shadows on the floor.

“That’s kind of how I see life and color and music,” she said, wearing silver hoops and a dark top with embroidered sleeves that ballooned around her shoulders, in a video interview from her living room in London, Ontario.

The idea of beauty has always been central to Pimienta — who is of Afro-Colombian and Wayuu descent — and her work, which ranges across music, ceramics and textiles. Pimienta won the Polaris Music Prize, Canada’s top music award, for her second album, “La Papessa” (2016), but rose to more prominence in 2020 with “Miss Colombia,” a record that examined anti-Blackness, Eurocentric aesthetic norms and misogyny. She later described it as an angry love letter to her home country. Five years later, she put out “La Belleza,” Spanish for “the beauty,” a dembow-infused orchestral suite over nine tracks composed for the New York City Ballet, the company’s first score from a woman of color. Her latest album, “Caribenya,” builds on that work and then flips it on its head.

racism in a different light, she said. While she was teased and bullied in Colombia because of how she looked — in the private bilingual school her mom worked hard to put her in, she said, classmates would cut her Afro hair and place it under a microscope — it wasn’t the same as when a white Canadian would tell her to “go back” to “her country.” She got married at 19 and had a son at 21. When the marriage didn’t work out, Pimienta went to Toronto to study criticism and curatorial practice at the Ontario College of Art and Design.

Even after the success of “Miss Colombia,” which was nominated for a Grammy Award, Pimienta still struggled financially. When she began touring the record, things started to go wrong: She entered a dispute with a member of her team, and the deal on a house she was buying in Colombia fell through. On top of that, she said, “My father, who raised me, passed away, and I couldn’t be at the burial because I was on tour making money.”

For two years, she was clinically depressed, she said. At her lowest point, she got a call from choreographer Andrea Miller, who asked if Pimienta would be interested in collaborating on a piece for the New York City Ballet. Working on new music helped.

“I started recognizing beauty,” Pimienta said. “Why it’s worth living for, why it’s worth staying, why I’m still here.”

Initially conceived of as a B-side to her last release, the title combines the word “Caribbean” with Enya, the enigmatic Irish singer and composer. On it, Pimienta trades the Gregorian chants and dramatic string arrangements she played with on “La Belleza” for a warmer, poppier sound decidedly driven by cumbia. Images of dragonflies, rivers and the sea abound, as do depictions of fraught emotional relationships and critiques of colonialism. Beauty is a consideration, too, though there’s also something more complex at play.

“My whole ethos,” Pimienta said, is to showcase the “Caribbean sublime.”

In doing so, she hopes to dispel stereotypes about her homeland. Media depictions of the Caribbean tend to exoticize the region, but Pimienta wishes people would see it as “not decorative, not just where you go to relax or go wild,” but rather “a respectable place.”

The singer, visual artist and composer, now 38, spent most of her life in Barranquilla, a port city in northern Colombia, where the Magdalena River meets the Caribbean Sea. In her late teens, Pimienta moved to Ontario, where she began to see race and

By the time “La Belleza” came out, Pimienta was already working on “Caribenya,” which was largely produced by Amigos Poderosos, Chancha Vía Circuito and the collective Grupo Jejeje, comprising Turbo Sonidero and Arrabalero. The Britain-based Arrabalero stayed with Pimienta during the last month of recording. One day they were in the studio with singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado, a friend of Pimienta’s, when they began talking about a song Pimienta was working on, “Hoy Por Tí,” a synthy, slowburning cumbia. Furtado had always liked the track. When Pimienta suggested Furtado sing on it, she agreed. “As she was getting ready in the booth, I wrote the lyrics,” Pimienta said.

Her engagement with the non-Western canon often gets her records placed in the world music aisle, a label she pushes back on.

“‘World music’ is a term that Europeans created so that they would make themselves superior yet again,” Pimienta said. “It’s like, ‘Oh, she’s from Colombia; let’s put her with all the other countries lumped into one.’”

But Pimienta’s work — which is at times classical, pop, cumbia, electro-pop, reggaeton and folk — also evades genre altogether. In the end, she argued, what matters is quality.

“And great art always survives, you know, like when you listen to my music, you can listen to it in any year and it doesn’t sound dated,” she said. “It sounds like it belongs to the now, because it is music that is made with heart.”

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq closed lower on Wednesday with a mixed performance from technology stocks, as investors waited for key earnings reports to gauge the health of a market rally fed by enthusiasm for artificial intelligence.

After months of gains that lifted the major indexes from their March lows, momentum has been wobbling with uneven trading in heavyweight semiconductor stocks and weakness in software stocks.

The crowded earnings calendar leaves markets vulnerable to sharper swings this week, while geopolitical tensions added another layer of caution.

Trump threatens retaliation against civilian targets if Iran strikes in strait

Iran’s leaders dug in against President Donald Trump’s threats on Wednesday to strike bridges and power plants in Iran if the country targeted any more ships in the Strait of Hormuz, with the foreign minister warning on social media that Iran would fight “an eye for an eye.”

Trump had made the threat in a similarly bellicose social media post, saying that U.S. forces would respond to attacks on ships with its own strikes, including in or near the capital, Tehran. Deliberate strikes on civilian infrastructure could be considered a war crime under international law.

With no sign of a letup in the fighting from either side, the price of Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, jumped 4% to nearly $95 a barrel on Wednesday.

Trump accompanied his bluster over the past week and a half with the reinstatement of a naval blockade on Iran as well as deadly military exchanges, but the escalatory tactics have so far failed to either stop Iranian attacks or force the country’s hard-line leaders, who

want to prolong the war, back to the negotiating table.

The specificity of Trump’s threat also reflected how much the focus of the war has narrowed into a fight over the strait, a critical passage for global oil and gas, even as he maintains that his wider objective is preventing Iran from building a nuclear weapon. The strait was open and free to transit before the war began, but Iran has proved it can effectively control traffic with threats of strikes and, in doing so, gained powerful leverage over global markets.

Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Tehran’s chief negotiator in peace talks, said Wednesday that if Iran could not export its oil, no other country in the region would be able to do so. He was apparently alluding to the recent announcement of a Red Sea blockade of Saudi Arabia by the Houthis, an Iran-backed group that controls much of neighboring Yemen.

Even as four American service members were killed in Jordan and Iraq over the weekend, bringing the number of those killed to 18, Trump administration officials have publicly downplayed Iran’s strikes on U.S. bases in the Middle East. In private, however, military officials have acknowledged a growing number

of previously undisclosed injuries.

One U.S. military official, speaking Wednesday on condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters, said that nearly a dozen U.S. troops were wounded severely

enough by Iranian missile and drone attacks in Jordan and other countries this month that they were flown to a U.S. military hospital in Germany for treatment. The Defense Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Here’s what else we’re covering:

— Shipping charges: Two of the world’s biggest shipping firms said Tuesday that they would impose emergency fuel surcharges to compensate for a surge in fuel prices after the resumption of hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz.

— Red Sea: The Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen has declared a Red Sea blockade on Saudi Arabia, a U.S. ally that has shifted much of its oil exports to the waterway from the Strait of Hormuz. Though it remained unclear how the Houthis would follow through on the threat, at least six vessels reversed course in the Red Sea on Monday and Tuesday, according to Kpler, a maritime data firm.

— Nuclear deal: The Trump administration plans to announce Wednesday a broad nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia that could lead to the country enriching its own fuel for nuclear reactors, U.S. officials said.

Model scout who connected women to Epstein is found dead in France

Amodel scout who was likely to be questioned by prosecutors in France for his connections to Jeffrey Epstein was found dead this week in a house near Paris, French officials said Wednesday.

The man, Daniel Siad, was in regular contact with Epstein about a decade ago, according to files released in January by the Justice Department. Their texts suggest that Siad repeatedly tried to connect Epstein, a disgraced financier accused of running a sex-trafficking ring, with people Siad described as female models, including one who he said was 15 and others who were under 18.

Siad later acknowledged his work for Epstein but denied wrongdoing. His body was found Monday in a house in Colombes, a northwestern suburb of Paris, according to the local prosecutor’s office. Authorities are still assessing how Siad died, the prosecutors said.

He was named in February by Laure Beccuau, the chief Paris prosecutor, as “one of the

people who could be questioned” as part of a pair of broader inquiries into people connected to Epstein that opened that month.

In a statement Wednesday, Beccuau said investigators had identified or been contacted by 24 women who were victims or witnesses of incidents “likely committed by Daniel Siad or others implicated,” and had spoken with 16 of them. The investigation had not “yet yielded any evidence justifying his immediate arrest,” Beccuau added.

In a broadcast interview in May, Siad denied the accusations against him and said he was waiting for justice to take its course.

In that interview, Siad said he had worked as a model scout for 30 years and was introduced to Epstein in the early 2000s.

Over 15 years, Siad connected Epstein to about a dozen models, Siad said. None of them ever gave him “negative feedback” about Epstein, he said. “My relationship with Jeffrey Epstein was strictly professional,” he added.

Siad’s lawyer, Ménya Arab-Tigrine, said

Wednesday that her client had “consistently proclaimed his innocence.”

Separately, prosecutors said this year that they had also received a complaint from a Swedish woman accusing Siad of committing “sexual acts that she describes as rape” in 1990 in France.

The woman, a former model named Ebba P. Karlsson, wrote on a website that she cofounded to publicize testimonies from abuse survivors that Siad “raped me in a pool house behind a villa on the French Riviera.” In the May interview, Siad said: “I never raped a woman in my life.”

Despite Siad’s death, the investigation will continue “to identify all individuals who may be implicated,” Beccuau said in the statement Wednesday.

Siad is the second person connected to Epstein who has been found dead in France. In 2022, Jean-Luc Brunel, a French modeling agent and Epstein associate who had been charged with the rape of minors, was found dead in his jail cell.

In a screenshot included in files released by the Department of Justice, Daniel Siad, a model scout who repeatedly introduced Jeffrey Epstein to young women. Siad, who was likely to be questioned by prosecutors in France for his connections to Epstein, denied wrongdoing. He was found dead in a house near Paris in July 2026. A mandate for change and a monumental test for Ukraine’s new military chief

Ukrainian soldiers preparing to launch drones at a target in Russia in May 2026. While recent battlefield developments have been positive, especially with long-range strikes in Russia and Crimea, analysts warned that Ukraine must ensure a smooth handover in the military leadership to maintain momentum. (Brendan Hoffman/The New York Times)

On May 9, 2014, a 13-ton armored vehicle tore through pro-Russian barricades in Mariupol, launching a young battalion commander into Ukrainian legend as a symbol of raw, improvisational resistance.

Today, that soldier, Maj. Gen. Mykhailo Drapatyi, assumes command of Ukraine’s armed forces in a fraught moment of military and political transition, leading his country in a battle that could have scarcely been imagined a decade ago.

It is a war both of grinding attrition and high-tech innovation, in which survival is dictated by which side can adapt faster and better integrate ever-evolving weapons into the daily slog of fighting under skies saturated with drones.

Drapatyi, 43, who was appointed the top military commander by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday night, replaced 60-year-old Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi. Drapatyi represents a newer generation of postSoviet military leadership in Ukraine that has embraced more modern approaches to warfighting.

He is one of the key architects of Ukraine’s “drone line” strategy. Instead of relying purely on static trenches holding vulnerable infantry troops, Ukraine created a continuous “kill zone” behind the front line

filled with attack and reconnaissance drones and automated turrets.

That tactic has helped slow Russian advances, allowing Ukraine to take the initiative along parts of the front for the first time in years. It has also given hope to a war-weary nation that has lost tens of thousands of soldiers.

While recent battlefield developments have been positive, especially with longrange strikes in Russia and Crimea, analysts warned that Ukraine must ensure a smooth handover in the military leadership to maintain momentum.

The challenge is heightened by the circumstances of Syrskyi’s dismissal. Ukraine has been engulfed in turmoil since Zelenskyy fired his reform-minded defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, last week. Fedorov, 35, had clashed with Syrskyi over strategy, including how far to go in relying on drones and robots.

Demonstrators took to the streets to protest Zelenskyy’s decision to side with Syrskyi. Over six days, the crowds moved from calling for Fedorov’s reinstatement to demanding Syrskyi’s removal. Zelenskyy granted that wish Tuesday night, replacing Syrskyi with Drapatyi, who had endorsed Fedorov and his vision of modern warfare.

Drapatyi steps into a matrix of crises. He must address problems with Ukraine’s recruitment system while also bracing for a possible renewed Russian mobilization

effort. He must shield energy grids from a winter strike campaign even as Ukraine’s most sophisticated air defenses run low on ammunition. And he must blunt Russia’s slow and bloody campaign to level the remaining bastions of defense in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.

Zelenskyy’s firing of Fedorov also exposed a rift between the armed forces and the Defense Ministry over management of the war effort, which the military’s new leadership will have to navigate.

For Drapatyi, dealing with the president’s office will require a balancing act, analysts said. He will be pulled, they said, between asserting the operational independence favored by military reformers and accommodating Zelenskyy’s tendency toward direct battlefield management.

Syrskyi’s willingness to comply with executive directives made him a predictable partner for Zelenskyy. Drapatyi, by contrast, is taking over with backing from a reformist movement demanding a departure from rigid, top-down command.

Valerii Zaluzhnyi, a former top commander of Ukrainian forces who was fired by Zelenskyy in 2024 after the two clashed over mobilization efforts and counteroffensive strategy, said in a statement that the task ahead of Drapatyi was “much harder than he imagines.”

Taras Chmut, a prominent Ukrainian military analyst, said that the real fight in Kyiv, the capital, was over defense procurement: what Ukraine buys for the army with its own money and with partners’ money, and which powerful defense contractors might lose income in the process.

Drapatyi, analysts said, will have only

limited influence over those decisions and over the efforts that Fedorov had started to address corruption and purchase more modern weapons, like drones.

Liudmyla Buimister, an independent lawmaker who is a former special forces commander and still serves in the military, said she expected Drapatyi to change the culture of the high command, stop the practice of micromanaging battlefield decisions and bring more coherence to the deployment of forces.

Drapatyi is expected to champion many of the same technology-driven initiatives that Fedorov was pushing.

Jack Watling, an analyst at the Royal United Services Institute in London, wrote in an online commentary that, with the change at the top, Fedorov’s push for a data-driven approach to improve the military’s performance might now be possible.

Drapatyi is also expected to empower commanders to make real-time decisions based on battlefield conditions. Under Syrskyi, junior commanders bristled at what they viewed as micromanagement, with the General Staff needing to sign off before shifting tactics or withdrawing troops from compromised positions.

Syrskyi gained a reputation for tolerating high numbers of casualties in holding such positions or conducting assaults, though he maintained that protecting soldiers was his priority.

With the recruitment shortfall, Drapatyi, like Fedorov, is believed to see problems in internal processing, training flaws and corruption as primary factors, not a shortage of available men. Ukraine’s hope is that a change in culture in the high command will increase motivation to join the military.

Puerto Rico falls to Mexico at NORCECA U19 continentals

With a 3-1 loss to Mexico, Puerto Rico finished with a 1-1 record in the group stage of the NORCECA Girls’ U-19 Continental Championship in San José, Costa Rica. (NORCECA)

Mexico topped Puerto Rico in four sets to take the lead in Group B of the NORCECA Girls’ U-19 Continental Championship in San José, Costa Rica on Tuesday.

Mexico dominated the first set 25-17 and set the pace early on. Puerto Rico responded in the second set with active defense, cleaner attacks and a six-point lead that forced Mexico to make adjustments. The Mexican team then bore down, tying the score and closing out the set 27-25 and appearing to shift the match’s momentum.

Puerto Rico responded by stepping up

the pressure in the third set, ultimately prevailing by a narrow margin (27-25) to extend the match and prove they could go toe-to-toe with their opponents.

Mexico regained control from the start of the fourth set, however, using greater stability in reception and fewer errors to turn in another 25-17 win to seal the match and take over first place in the group.

“We did what we could; there’s nothing left to do but focus on our next match and move forward,” Carinialys Román, Puerto Rico’s offensive captain, said after the match. “We couldn’t close the block against Mexico, and that hurt us in the end.”

Collectively, Mexico was more efficient in

attacks (57-54) and service aces (6-3). Puerto Rico held a slight advantage in blocks (7-6), but the decisive difference lay in unforced errors: Puerto Rico conceded 33 points to 22 by Mexico, a margin that ultimately tipped the scales at key moments.

Karen González finished with 22 points for Mexico. Isabella Gallardo scored 16 points and Ángela Pérez added 14.

Román led Puerto Rico with 16 points, followed by Ana Aquino, Daniela Echeandia and Eliany Quiñones each with 11.

Puerto Rico, which finished the group stage with a 1-1 record, was left to await the results from the other pools to determine its opponent for the next round.

Youth Double-A Baseball to open season Aug. 1 with 74 franchises

The Puerto Rico Baseball Federation announced on Tuesday that the 2026-27 season of the Youth Double-A Baseball League’s Roberto Alomar Tournament will begin on Aug. 1 with the participation of 74 franchises -- the highest number in recent years -- distributed across 13 sections.

Opening day will feature a doubleheader between the Próceres Jr. of Barranquitas and the defending champion Titans of Aibonito, starting at 10 a.m. at Hermanos Marrero Stadium in Aibonito. The remaining teams will begin their schedules on Aug. 8 with doubleheaders at their respective home fields.

The season will be dedicated to Julio Abreu Miranda, the team owner of the Lirios of Juncos, in recognition of his four decades of service and his contributions to the development of youth baseball in Puerto Rico.

The new season will feature 10 new franchises: the Jueyeros of Maunabo, Lobos of Arecibo, Phoenix of Bayamón, Raiders of Río Piedras, Llaneros of Toa Baja, BV 2 of Toa Alta, Cobayas of Carolina, Diamonds of Cayey, Plena of Salinas and Island Prospect (PRIP) of Gurabo.

According to the Federation, the league will involve more than 1,700 players throughout the season. The Youth DoubleA League was founded in 1972 to promote the development of young baseball players in Puerto Rico.

Fastest miler’s formula: Bespoke spikes, a team, altitude and attitude

With a fist pump as he crossed the line, Josh Kerr cashed in a check that he had spent eight months writing.

The clock stopped at 3 minutes 42.66 seconds, and the London crowd erupted.

A Briton, on home soil, had just taken down a world record from 1999. Hicham El Guerrouj’s time of 3:43.16, once considered untouchable, was no longer.

“I’m following the footsteps of the giants,” Kerr, who broke the record last Saturday in the London Diamond League, told reporters. He is the seventh British man to hold the mile world record, 72 years after Roger Bannister broke the four-minute barrier.

This performance was the product of Kerr’s self-branded Project 222 — the number of seconds that go into 3:42. He pitched it to Brooks, his sponsor, last November, just four weeks after hobbling to the finish in the 1,500-meter world championship final because of a calf injury.

“The body is electric right now,” Kerr said. “I felt pretty incredible. My legs felt good, my mind was ready, but it’s been a long journey.”

Kerr, 28, does not so much race middle-distance events as play poker within them. He runs wearing sunglasses and is one of the smartest at showing his hand late and covering moves by others. By the same analogy, with this project, he went allin on a blind hand — and won.

The split of 3:27.62 at 1,500 meters was even faster than Kerr’s British record run, which earned him silver at the 2024

Paris Olympics, and he was nearly perfect when cutting the race in half. He passed 800 meters in 1:51.1. Then the first pacemaker, Brandon Kidder, dropped out. Kerr clocked the second 809 meters in 1:51.6.

“I knew I had it in the first 400 meters because my pacemakers did an incredible job,” he said.

The preparation for this race was intense, and needed to be for the 2.68-second improvement he produced. But what made it a reality?

Brooks crafted Kerr bespoke spikes, made for his mechanics and to run 55-second laps on repeat, in addition to an aerodynamically tested speed suit. The process of creating his footwear involved VO2-max (how much oxygen your body can use during intense exercise) and perception testing, plus a visit to a facility to run on a treadmill in the race day spikes.

Opening day (Aug. 1) of the Youth Double-A Baseball League season will feature a doubleheader between the Próceres Jr. of Barranquitas and the defending champion Titans of Aibonito (seen above), starting at 10 a.m. at Hermanos Marrero Stadium in Aibonito.

Kerr spoke about the sacrifice his teammates and his family had made. For the past five weeks, his parents have lived with him at altitude in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to allow Kerr to train on a track at 5,335 feet above sea level, with his mother, Jill, providing physiotherapy.

“The mantra was that we’re not chasing world records, we’re creating the conditions where world records become inevitable,” Kerr said.

That meant 70-mile weeks and running as many 55-second laps as possible. One of the key sessions was a 4-by800-meter workout, with the third and fourth reps at 1:50, in which Kerr tested spike prototypes.

Kidder, a fellow Brooks Beasts athlete, played rabbit in the race, just as he had in training. He hoped to get to 1,000 meters rather than 800 meters, and suffered because of a slightly fast opening lap (54.75 seconds).

“I knew Josh was really fit, so I felt a little bit of pressure to not mess things up,” Kidder said. “Josh just looked so good. I was like, ‘If he wants to squeeze, I don’t want to get in the way.’ Such a cool moment. I’ve known the guy for years. He’s a gamer.”

Their relationship dates to 2017 when Kidder was running for Brooks and it recruited Kerr, a three-time NCAA champion, from the University of New Mexico.

Kerr first shared his desire to break the world record in December, and asked if Kidder wanted to be involved. Little convincing was needed.

Zan Rudolf also stepped in as a late replacement after another pacer dropped out. He and Kerr did one workout together the day before the race — 300 meters, 200 meters and 100 meters at target pace — as Rudolf arrived only in midweek, having been in Budapest, Hungary, for other pacemaking duties. The Slovene went three-tenths of a second quicker than his own national record to lead Kerr through the kilometer mark in 2:18.7, also dropping out short. (He had planned to go to 1,200 meters.)

Coach Danny Mackey, who has worked with Kerr since he turned pro in 2018, was watching from the stands. He said he was “a little worried” to have Kerr, who was born in Scotland, running alone that early, but had complete faith in his athlete.

“That was the most elated I’ve ever been,” Mackey said. “In the lead-up to the race, there have been cameras and attention on us, something we just aren’t used to. We all knew he could do it. I told him I love him.”

Kerr, however, relished the high-pressure moment, which is partly why he publicized his record-breaking attempt in March. “He’s a rare person like that, but he’s still human,” Mackey said.

The coach’s one complaint? That it was only 3:42.66. “Based on a couple of his workouts, if he had better weather, I think there’s another second there,” Mackey said.

Mild crosswinds meant conditions were not perfect. They knew that coming in, and Kerr was happy to roll the dice to do this in front of a home crowd, whereas Mackey would have staged it in Monaco or California.

He and Mackey work as a coach-athlete pairing because of their differences in opinion. “I’m a little bit of a bodyguard,” Mackey said.

An 800-meter personal best for Kerr in mid-May confirmed what Mackey and the team knew in training: His topend speed was better than ever, and he had rediscovered the final form that Kidder saw in 2025, but a calf injury prevented it from fully flourishing. This was not, as Kerr put it in the prerace news conference, his first time being in mile world-record shape. Rather, it was the first moment he could dedicate a season to target it.

Scottish middle-distance runner Josh Kerr broke the world record in the mile -- Hicham El Guerrouj’s time of 3 minutes 43.16 seconds, set in 1999 and once considered untouchable -- finishing in 3:42.66 last Saturday at the London Diamond League. (Facebook via World Athletics)

Kidder paced Kerr in a 1,200-meter time trial at altitude at the start of July. They simulated their shakeout run and physio treatment to mimic race day.

Kerr finished the time trial in 2:42.45, more than five seconds quicker than El Guerrouj’s split in his world record run. “I was like, ‘Oh man, let’s line it up tomorrow, he’s got this in the bag,’” Kidder remembered. Kidder was convinced, having seen Kerr finish a workout totaling 4,000 meters at worldrecord speed — four sets of 200 meters, 600 meters, 200 meters.

It’s easy to see now why Kerr and the whole team were so full of belief. “It won’t look like a chase,” he insisted prerace, preferring the word “pursuit” instead.

Kerr held pace throughout the final lap, pulling away from Yared Nuguse (who finished second in 3:45.69). The American had been close behind when they hit the bell, but faded to finish a little over three seconds back.

“I’ve never heard a stadium that loud,” Nuguse said.
