Three‑quarters of the beaches evalu ated along Puerto Rico’s northern coast are experiencing erosion, highlighting growing concerns about climate‑driven shoreline loss and the vulnerability of coastal communities, ac cording to a University of Puerto Rico study.
Researchers found that 75% of the beach transects studied showed erosion, with reductions in subaerial beach width ranging from fractions of a meter to as much as 92 meters. Only 25% of transects exhibited accretion, with increases of up to 154 meters.

The findings were published this week by the U.S. Geologi cal Survey (USGS) as an official Data Release for the project Cambios Costeros en Once Municipios de la Costa Norte de Puerto Rico (2022-2023), marking a significant federal validation of the study’s scientific rigor. The research was led by the Instituto de Investigación y Planificación Costera de Puerto Rico, part of UPR’s Graduate School of Planning.
The project, directed by Dr. Maritza Barreto Orta and Dr. Kevián Pérez Valentín in collaboration with USGS scientist Legna Torres García, was funded through a competitive $499,000 grant over two years. Using geospatial tools, the team analyzed changes in beach width and shoreline posi tion between 2018 and 2022/2023 across 11 municipalities: Rincón, Aguadilla, Isabela, Hatillo, Arecibo, Vega Baja, Do
rado, Carolina, Loíza, Río Grande and Luquillo.
The study, whose full dataset is now pub licly available on the USGS official platform, also documented widespread fragmentation of beaches caused by vegetation, rocky outcrops and built infrastructure conditions that dimin ish the shoreline’s natural ability to absorb wave energy and heighten community exposure to coastal hazards. Shoreline retreat inland was identified as the most common change during the study period, typically under 15 meters, though more severe shifts were linked to winter swells and extreme erosion events.
Built structures in the coastal zone were found to directly influence beach width, rein forcing long‑standing concerns about develop ment pressures along Puerto Rico’s shores.
Barreto Orta emphasized that the results should serve as a wake-up call for policymakers and planners.
“Coastal erosion in Puerto Rico is ongoing, and these findings highlight the urgency of integrating scientific data into land‑use planning,” she said. “Understanding how our beaches evolve allows us to anticipate risks, protect communi ties and infrastructure, and design more effective adaptation strategies in the face of climate change and extreme events.”
The research team also included Graduate School of Plan ning alumni Samiris Suleiman, Brittany Ubiñas and David Carrión, along with undergraduate environmental sciences student Bianca Rodríguez Mestre, who contributed to geo spatial data collection and analysis.

Nearly a month after the twin earthquakes that shook Venezuela on June 24 -- leaving behind destruc tion, loss of life, and entire communities in crisis Puerto Rico is preparing to respond with a gesture of faith and brotherhood.
The organizations Puente de Esperanza, Casa Venezuela and Nueva Vida 97.7FM have joined forces to organize the “Unidos por Venezuela” (United for Venezuela) event, a day of music and prayer to be held this Sunday in front of the island Capitol in San Juan.
The event, running from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., will bring together various Christian music artists who will unite their voices in a concert from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a time of intercession from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There will also be a live link-up with Venezuela, ensuring that the message of hope reaches those currently facing the aftermath of the
tragedy directly.
The organizers of the event, which is free of charge and open to the general public, are calling on the Puerto Rican community -- regardless of denomination -- to join the initiative. All donations collected during the evening will be channeled through Casa Venezuela Puerto Rico to continue supporting the survivors of the catastrophe.
Pastor Wilmer Guédez, a coordinator of Puente de Espe ranza, said the event’s goal is simple: to tell the Venezuelan people that they are not alone. He noted that Puerto Rico, rooted in its Christian identity, seeks to serve as a bridge between need and provision, standing with Venezuela during this time of pain through concrete acts of faith and solidarity.
Guédez also expressed his gratitude to Puerto Rico for the aid already sent to Venezuela through government ini tiatives, the church, and Puerto Rican civil society leaders -- a gesture that, in his view, reflects the great heart of the Puerto Rican people.

As part of its commitment to the protection and well-being of victims of gender violence, the Municipality of Aguas Buenas has formalized a collaborative agreement with the island government’s judicial branch that will strengthen the coordination of services, fortify education as a prevention tool and facilitate access to resources for surviving victims.
The initiative is part of a broader effort involving several municipalities in Puerto Rico’s central region, through the Caguas Judicial Region, to strengthen the interagency response to gender-based violence and ensure more agile and coordinated care. It also includes several non-profit organizations.
“We are aware of the sad reality that Puerto Rico is facing,” Aguas Buenas Mayor Karina Nieves Serrano said. “That is why it is essential that municipalities, agencies, the judicial system, the police, and organizations work together to strengthen prevention, education, and access to tools that allow us to combat this type of violence.”
As part of the agreement, Aguas Buenas will maintain direct communication with the judicial branch to coordinate referrals and exchange information, make referrals to specialized services, offer transportation to the Specialized Court for Gender Violence Cases of the Caguas Judicial Region, participate in training and educational efforts, and continue developing initiatives aimed at preventing gender violence in its communities.
It is worth noting that the Specialized Courts for Gender Violence Cases incorporate a structured space with separate service areas for petitioners and respondents, including a children’s room and appropriate spaces for legal advocacy services. They are staffed by judges and court personnel trained in gender violence issues, including sexual violence, and operate on specialized schedules tailored to the nature of the cases before the court.
According to statistics from the Puerto Rico Police, between 2017 and 2025 some 142 women were murdered by their partners or ex-partners.
The mayor urged citizens seeking more information or needing to request services to call 787-732-8621 or visit the Aguas Buenas City Hall.

At-large Rep. José Aponte Hernández, along with Rep. Elinette González Aguayo, who chairs the Natural Resources Committee in the lower chamber of the Puerto Rico Legislature, announced on Wednesday the start of an evaluation to update Law 430-2000, better known as the Navigation and Water Safety Law of Puerto Rico.
“This week, the secretary of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources [DNER], Engineer Waldemar Quiles, expressed the need to modernize the parameters of the law that regulates navigation in Puerto Rico,” Aponte said in a written statement. “Law 430-2000 was
signed 26 years ago, more than a quarter of a century ago, and although several amendments have been made, a detailed review is still needed. Much has happened since then. It is time to

adapt this law to the reality of our island. We are going to begin a study of the Navigation Law to adapt it to the current reality.”
The evaluation will include the use of boats in nature reserves and giving more powers to the DNER Rangers Corps, as well as guidance programs, signage and installation of marine buoys demarcating areas for the use of boaters, among others.
“The House Natural Resources Committee is committed to the safety of water activities in Puerto Rico, including boating,” González, who represents District 11 (Dorado, Vega Alta and Vega Baja). “According to the Neptuno vessel registration system, there are approximately 34,000 boats, sailboats, and/or personal wa-
tercraft on the island. However, DNER officials believe the actual number exceeds 96,000. With the advent of technology, we can implement, among other initiatives, smart electronic tags that will allow the Department to identify these vessels using unmanned aerial vehicles, among other platforms. This is something we will incorporate into the new law that we will be working on with Representative Aponte.”
The most recent amendment to the Navigation and Water Safety Law was Law 40-2026, which amended sections 9 and 10 of Article 7 to establish that persons aged 18 to 20 years of age may not operate a vessel or navigation vehicle when the blood alcohol content is 0.02%.

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón signed into law several measures modifying government policy in areas such as port security, civil rights, protection for victims of gender-based violence, and legal claims involving minors and incapacitated persons, it was announced on Wednesday.
The new Law 126-2026 repeals the port security model in place since 2008 and establishes a new framework for coordinating the surveillance of port facilities with federal agencies, aiming to
eliminate regulatory structures and costs that the government deems unnecessary for maritime commerce. According to the legislation’s preamble, the previous system duplicated functions already performed by federal authorities and generated higher operational costs.
“With this legislation, we are modernizing our port security policy and eliminating costly, inefficient processes that for years have represented an additional burden on commerce and, ultimately, on consumers,” the governor stated in a written release.
Another approved measure, Law 130-
2026, amends the Civil Code to clarify that the statute of limitations for a claim remains suspended while a person is a minor or has a judicially declared incapacity, thereby preventing the loss of the right to file a claim due to circumstances beyond their control.
“No minor or incapacitated person should lose the right to file a claim due to circumstances beyond their control or the inaction of their legal representatives,” González Colón said.
Under newly enacted Law 138-2026, every municipality must designate a liaison to assist and provide guidance to women
who are victims or survivors of domestic and gender-based violence. The official will offer guidance, facilitate referrals, and assist with the processing of protection orders, among other duties. Municipalities have 90 days to implement the new provision.
“With this law, we are strengthening the support network for victims and survivors of domestic and gender-based violence by bringing services closer to communities and ensuring that every municipality has trained personnel to provide guidance, offer assistance, and channel necessary resources,” González Colón said.

The animal‑welfare group Vínculo Animal PR is urging the Puerto Rico government to take stronger biosecurity measures after images circulating on social media and in news outlets raised concerns about the irregular handling, exploitation and public display of exotic species on the island.
The organization warned that the exhibi tion and sale of monkeys, birds and other wild animals are not isolated occurrences but rather part of a broader policy framework that requires urgent review. Beyond the public health and ecological risks identified by authorities, Vín culo Animal PR emphasized that the practices also endanger the animals themselves, many of which are linked to trafficking, commercial breeding or the exotic pet trade.
“Wild and exotic animals are not pets; they are sentient beings that belong in their natural habitats,” Vínculo Animal PR Director Sahir Pujols said. “Puerto Rico needs a public
policy that prioritizes prevention and recognizes that these animals are victims of a system that turns them into commodities.”
As part of its initiative, the group is pro posing a temporary moratorium on the impor tation, breeding and commercial sale of certain high‑risk exotic species. The pause, they argue, would allow regulators to reassess the current legal framework, strengthen enforcement and develop biosecurity protocols tailored to Puerto Rico’s ecological vulnerabilities.
Vínculo Animal PR also announced plans to submit a formal proposal to state and federal agencies to seek recognition of Puerto Rico as a High Risk Ecological Zone. The group says such a designation would bolster interagency coordination, prevention strategies and rap id response capacity for cases involving exotic or invasive species.
“Prevention will always be more effective and less costly than dealing with the conse quences once an invasive species becomes established,” said attorney Amanda Collazo,
a Vínculo Animal PR member and president of the Special Commission on Animal Rights. “Puerto Rico hosts a biodiversity found nowhere else in the world and needs biosecurity tools that reflect that reality.”
The organization is also launching an educational campaign to reshape public per ceptions of wild and exotic animals, empha sizing that the exotic pet trade fuels wildlife
trafficking, animal suffering and ecological risk. Vínculo Animal PR is encouraging res idents to support the proposed moratorium through a public petition and is inviting organi zations, scientists, universities and professionals to join efforts to build a preventive public policy framework that protects biodiversity, strengthens biosecurity and ensures the ethical treatment of all animals.

The Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Admin istration (PRFAA) announced this week that the U.S. House Committee on Trans portation and Infrastructure has approved the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2026, a bipartisan measure that authorizes water‑related infrastructure projects led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
The bill now moves to consideration by the full House of Representatives.
WRDA, traditionally enacted every two years, provides congressional authorization for new USACE projects and continued sup port for ongoing initiatives involving flood management, coastal protection, environ mental restoration and navigation. The proj ects are considered essential for community safety and long‑term economic development.
According to the PRFAA, the 2026 leg islation includes multiple provisions, studies and infrastructure projects that would benefit Puerto Rico as part of broader efforts to mod
ernize and strengthen water systems across the island. The bill also incorporates measures aimed at accelerating USACE project delivery, improving coordination with state, territorial and municipal governments, and expanding access to specialized technical assistance.
The act further seeks to reinforce USACE’s navigation mission, enhance con gressional oversight, and bolster national strategies for flood mitigation and coastal risk management. It also addresses dam safety through the reauthorization of the Federal
Emergency Management Agency’s High Hazard Potential Dam Program under the National Dam Safety Program.
WRDA 2026 authorizes 133 new feasibility studies including at least one in a Puerto Rico municipality and 14 construction projects nationwide. It also in troduces reforms designed to expedite water infrastructure development and strengthen community capacity to address challenges related to flooding, coastal protection and water resource management.

potential of the south coast. The ship, which can carry up to 7,000 passengers and a crew of roughly 2,350, is expected to generate an estimated $1 million in economic activity during its two visits.
“The arrival of the world’s largest cruise ship to Ponce underscores the strength of our tourism industry and the growing appeal of the region,” the governor said, noting that the administration continues to push initiatives aimed at expanding cruise operations across the island.
Robles Cancel emphasized that the
planned calls reflect Puerto Rico’s positioning as a leading cruise destination in the Carib bean and the interest of major cruise lines in expanding their routes to regional ports. She added that the visits are the result of sustained collaboration between the CTPR and indus try partners to diversify tourism and bring its benefits to more municipalities.
During each stop, the Legend of the Seas will arrive at 10 a.m. and depart at 6 p.m., giving thousands of visitors time to explore Ponce’s historic and cultural attractions as well as destinations throughout the southern region.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order earlier this week placing a one-year pause on the construction of the largest data centers, putting the state at the forefront of the national debate over artificial intelligence companies’ impact on American landscapes and energy grids.
The order, the first of its kind to be enacted in the United States, will temporarily bar the state from approving permits for so-called hyperscale data centers, which use 50 or more megawatts of power to operate. During the pause, New York will develop a regulatory framework for assessing how these behemoth projects affect the environment.
A farther-reaching moratorium passed the state Legislature last month, prompting questions about whether Hochul, who has championed artificial intelligence as a tool for research and good governance, would be supportive. Hochul has not yet signed the bill, but said she will continue to consider it.
On Tuesday, Hochul, a Democrat seeking reelection this year, reiterated her belief in the power of technological innovation to improve New Yorkers’ lives. “I also believe this,” she added: “that the businesses that build technology capable of changing civilization with AI are also capable of working with us to protect our power grid, to protect our water supplies and our communities.”
The order will take effect immediately. It is not expected to affect the data demands of back-office financial services, hospitals or universities.

The news was met with criticism from tech business groups and several construction unions that had expected to benefit from the building of data centers.
“A shortsighted moratorium only accomplishes one thing: It kills good-paying union jobs,” said Mark McManus, the president of the United Association, which represents plumbers and pipe fitters. He added that the governor should instead institute “commonsense guardrails.”
But the move was celebrated by conservationists and by other Democratic politicians who hailed the governor’s mettle in standing up to Big Tech.

Laura Shindell, the New York state director at the nonprofit Food & Water Watch, called the moratorium “a huge step forward.”
“It comes as the direct result of immense public pressure from people across the state demanding their elected leaders protect them from Big Tech’s assault, which threatens the state’s clean air and water and New Yorkers’ financial security,” she said.
A recent Gallup poll showed that Republicans and Democrats alike oppose data center construction, citing the facilities’ rapacious demand for water and energy at a time when electricity costs are rising.
President Donald Trump has sought to stymie the backlash against data centers, obtaining a pledge from tech companies that they will pay for the cost of their own energy, while encouraging development more broadly.
That approach has led to a Wild West atmosphere, with companies racing to build as many as 1,500 new data centers across the country, from former tobacco fields in Virginia to Native American land along the Columbia River in Washington.
The boom has sparked dozens of moratorium proposals at the state and federal level. In March, the Seminole Nation passed a complete moratorium, barring development on the tribe’s lands in Oklahoma. In Maine, the state Legislature passed the country’s first statewide moratorium, but it was vetoed by Gov. Janet Mills, a Democrat, in April.
Other Democratic governors, including Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Gavin Newsom of California, have also weighed in on the side of Big Tech, citing the economic opportunities the projects might bring to states still suffering from deindustrialization.
Initially it appeared that Hochul, a pro-business moderate from Buffalo, might fall into the same camp. She had previously said the matter ought to be left to localities, leading some to worry she might veto the moratorium passed by Democrats in Albany.
But the demands of the moment prompted Hochul to weigh in, she said in a statement: “As data center development threatens to hike up utility bills, deplete our natural resources and create uncertainty for New Yorkers, it’s my responsibility to take action and lead.”
Hochul’s order will require data centers to pay into a state fund to help with badly needed electrical grid improvements. She is also pushing for legislation that would strip data centers of their tax subsidies so as to mitigate their burden on taxpayers.
It is difficult to determine how many data centers exist because of the current lack of regulatory requirements. The Pew Research Center this year found 148 existing and six planned data centers in New York state. But state Sen. Kristen Gonzalez, who sponsored the moratorium bill, has estimated there could be as many as 28 under consideration.
“Potential data centers in New York are seeking more than 9,000 megawatts of new electricity, about one-third of the total energy New York uses yearly,” Gonzalez said Tuesday, calling the push an electricity “gold rush.”
When the moratorium is lifted, localities will be free to pursue their own agreements with companies, according to state officials. But the state will provide a framework for those negotiations to empower governments to push for concessions from the companies, such as investments in local infrastructure and agreements that projects be built with union labor.
The moratorium will not delay projects that already have all the required permits, but will place a hold on those still requiring approval.
The broader bill that was passed by the Legislature would bar projects that use 20 megawatts or more, and would institute energy efficiency standards for projects larger than 1 megawatt, requiring them to use almost entirely renewable energy by 2050.
Hochul administration officials said that the governor had issued the order for the sake of expediency but that she would continue to review the legislation and any amendments with the bill’s sponsors.

The father of a Colombian immigrant shot and killed by a federal agent in Maine on Monday described him as “a good person raised with strong values,” who worked two jobs to support his wife and 3-year-old daughter.
“He had a great vision for getting ahead, so many dreams to fulfill,” Omar Duran, the father of Joan Sebastian Guerrero, told Noticias Caracol, a Colombian news outlet, on Tuesday, speaking in Spanish. “My son is a wonderful son — I don’t know why they did that to him.”
Guerrero, 25, lived in Biddeford, a small city south of Portland, where he worked as a food delivery driver and a late-night cleaner at a veterinary clinic. Duran said his son was in the United States legally.

In the hours after Guerrero was killed on the block where he lived, details emerged to suggest that immigration agents may have mistaken him for another person. A spokesperson for Sen. Angus King of Maine said Monday that Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin had told the senator that the agents had been looking for someone else.
The Department of Homeland Security said that ICE had been “conducting targeted surveillance on the last known address of an illegal alien with a final order of removal,” but it did not identify the person ICE was seeking. In its statement, Homeland Security referred to Guerrero as an “illegal alien” who “attempted to flee the scene” but did not name him, and provided no further information about his immigration status.
Guerrero was from Bucaramanga, a mountainside city of about 615,000 people in north-central Colombia. In Biddeford, he lived in a weathered three-story apartment building next to a coin-operated laundromat, which sits at the intersection where he was shot.
He and his wife and daughter would often exchange greetings with other neighborhood residents.
“They were always so happy and so polite,” Don Gregoire, 69, a hairstylist, said of Guerrero and his wife. “I’d be watering my flowers in front of the house, and they would stop and say, ‘Very nice flowers.’ And their little girl would wave.”
Guerrero had been a deliveryman for DoorDash, the company confirmed. In a statement, it said that he had not been working on the morning of his death.
The killing prompted furious protests in Biddeford and in nearby Scarborough, site of an ICE facility.
Maine’s congressional delegation called for an urgent investigation of the shooting in a letter sent Tuesday to Joseph V. Cuffari, inspector general of the Homeland Security Department.
“The facts surrounding this tragedy remain a matter
of significant local concern and necessitate a thorough, objective accounting,” King, an independent, Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican, and Reps. Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden, both Democrats, wrote in the letter. “Given the gravity of the situation and the understandable anxiety within the Biddeford community, we urge you to prioritize this investigation.”
The Trump administration has ordered ICE officers to halt most vehicle stops. Collins said in a statement Tuesday that she had urged Mullin to take the action in the wake of Guerrero’s killing, the second fatal shooting in two weeks by federal agents making traffic stops.
Last week, an ICE agent fatally shot a Mexican immigrant, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, during a traffic stop in Houston. The Homeland Security Department later said that Araujo was not the operation’s intended target.
An online fundraiser established by friends of the Guerrero family had raised $150,000 by Tuesday afternoon to help “cover legal expenses, funeral costs, and the repatriation of his body to Colombia, where his parents are waiting to lay him to rest,” it said.
Some of Guerrero’s neighbors shared jarring details of a violent and chaotic scene Monday morning: the sound of multiple gunshots and the sight of a white car, pierced by bullet holes, making slow circles around an intersection with Guerrero still in the driver’s seat.
Shortly after the immigration agents pulled him from the car, some saw Guerrero’s wife, Karo Rojas, kneeling and wailing near her husband in the street as their daughter looked on.
On Tuesday, Rojas shared photos of the three of them, smiling, on social media.
“I will love you all of the days of my life,” she wrote.

Back when the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 was in its early stages, the cry from the West was to supply Ukraine with enough artillery shells and tanks to blunt the Russian onslaught. Now, well into the war’s fifth year, this is a far different fight, one that Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, says has become a decisive “battle in the sky.” It is a decisive moment, too, for the West.
The ground war is at a stalemate. Russia is still clawing away at Ukrainian territory, but at a snail’s pace and extraordinary cost. Ukraine says it killed or wounded almost 40,000 Russians in June, or about 1,300 casualties per square kilometer “seized or infiltrated,” according to the Institute for the Study of War — an attrition rate 19 times what it was a year earlier. “Ukrainian forces are becoming increasingly effective at simultaneously slowing Russian advances and inflicting heavier losses,” the institute said.
The battle in the sky, by contrast, is not for territory: It is a grinding duel of attrition, destruction and death, intended to erode the enemy’s ability and will to carry on.
Russia is pummeling Ukraine with salvo after deadly salvo of drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles; Ukraine is using ever more sophisticated and longer-range drones to drive Russia’s fleet away from Ukraine in the Black Sea, starve Russian-occupied Crimea and, most effectively, strike oil facilities and military installations deep inside Russia. Long lines for gas in Moscow and black smoke billowing from a refinery in distant Omsk, and images of victims being pulled out of demolished apartment blocks in Kyiv, tell the rest of the story.
“If you stop the enemy on the battlefield, if you stop the war on land, and if you deny him dominance at sea … then the next battlefield becomes the sky,” Zelenskyy said in a recent interview with The Financial Times. “And frankly, in that contest it matters far less whose territory is larger.”
What matters, he made clear, is to have the means to block the Russian fusillades, and there lies the current crunch. After the United States’ large-scale expenditure of crucial missiles against Iran, including the prized Patriot interceptors, precious few Patriots remain to share with Ukraine. Zelenskyy said that in the intense Russian attack on July 6, Ukraine shot down drones and cruise missiles but did not have enough interceptors to stop a single ballistic missile. Ukraine simply doesn’t have enough Patriots to do the job. Russia, meanwhile, is producing about 60 Iskander missiles — the one most often fired at Ukraine — per month, according to Ukrainian military intelligence.
So interceptors, and specifically Patriots, have replaced artillery shells as the indispensable weapon for Ukraine in what may well be the endgame of this war. That was at least part of the thinking behind Zelenskyy’s government reshuffle announced Sunday; the “most important” matter

on June 30,
Overall, it is difficult to fathom how Russians have put up for so long with Vladimir Putin’s maniacal mission to destroy Ukraine, given the growing pain of Ukrainian strikes, a battlefield death toll of about 450,000, deteriorating living standards and the revival of a Soviet-style police state.
Yet Putin continues to believe that he can bring Kyiv to its knees with regular barrages. That makes it imperative for Ukraine, at this critical juncture of the war, to find ways of surviving the dearth of Patriot missiles while it hammers away at Russia. The Ukrainians are working with various European partners to develop their own missile defense systems and have already deployed an electronic warfare weapon called Lima, which messes with satellite navigation signals.
for the new government to address, he said, was the procurement and production of Patriot missiles.
The money is there — NATO has pledged $80 billion in military aid for Ukraine, and individual NATO countries have allocated billions more. President Donald Trump also seems to be shifting his favor back toward Ukraine after its recent military successes.
At the NATO summit meeting in Ankara, Turkey, last week, he called Ukraine’s leadership “ingenious,” and said he’d license Ukraine to produce the Patriot missiles it so urgently needs. Zelenskyy, reflecting the hard lessons of a rocky relationship, told The Financial Times, “President Trump wants to be where there’s success.”
What matters in the new phase of Ukraine’s war with Russia, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made clear, “is to have the means to block the Russian fusillades,” Times columnist Serge Schmemann writes, “and there lies the current crunch.” (Jedrzej Nowicki/ The New York Times) Dr. Ricardo Angulo Founder
Trump acknowledged that he hadn’t yet raised the license matter with the two main manufacturers of the missiles, Lockheed Martin and RTX. And even if they were to agree, it would take years for Ukraine to start full production. In the meantime, Ukraine has to compete with U.S. armed forces and 16 other foreign clients waiting for Patriot deliveries, and these fancy weapons take time to put together.
That does not mean Ukraine is doomed. Far from it. The Ukrainians have displayed remarkable ingenuity in adapting to new forms of warfare, most notably in the development of sophisticated, inexpensive and lethal drones. Following the old precept of “shoot the archer, not the arrow,” Ukraine has been increasingly targeting military-industrial facilities deep in Russia with considerable effect, as evidenced by Russia’s recent ban on the export of diesel fuel. Ukraine’s relentless drone attacks on Crimea and Russian shipping in the Sea of Azov have also been highly effective.
In the meantime, it is imperative for the United States and Europe to do what they can to help Ukraine protect itself. In his last undertaking before his death, Sen. Lindsey Graham had traveled to Ukraine. From there, he said he had reached agreement with the White House on a bipartisan bill to sanction buyers of Russian oil. That bill should be quickly advanced. Trump also should urgently act on his pledge to grant Ukraine a license to produce Patriots, and also to accelerate production at home and in Europe. Europeans, too, should share as many air-defense missiles as they can and redouble their efforts to help Ukraine develop new systems. That may not block Russian missiles right away, but it would be a powerful message to Putin that his time is fast running out.

This summer, plenty of familiar scores will be heard at the biggest orchestras in the country. Of course, there will be symphonies by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Gustav Mahler. But even more famous, perhaps, will be the soundtracks for “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars.”
What used to be a novelty has now become a core staple of symphonic programming in the United States: live soundtracks, performances in which an orchestra plays while a movie screens overhead. As the classical music industry grapples with declining cultural relevance and mounting financial challenges, an evening of “How to Train Your Dragon” is no longer inconceivable.
Orchestra administrators say the programming shift attracts audiences that might not otherwise come to a typical concert. And because of technological advances, there are more films available for programming than ever. Melia Tourangeau, the president and chief executive of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, said in an interview that live soundtrack shows are the ensemble’s “fastest-growing product line.”
Still, there have been grumbles about the artistic merit of these concerts.
“Trying to get people to go to the symphony by presenting something that’s more familiar is not necessarily a bad thing,” Evan Shinners, a musician and the host of the podcast “W.T.F. Bach,” said in an interview. “It’s just not an effective thing.”
“Despite how lovely film music can be, it’s not classical music,” he added. “It just happens to be playable by the orchestra. What you do when you do present film music in an orchestra is, you reinforce people’s love for films. You don’t cause them to come back to want to hear Beethoven.”
In the early 2010s, the Philadelphia Orchestra programmed one live soundtrack concert per season. In the last decade, it has typically done three. The Pittsburgh Symphony used to do three per season; now, it is doing five.
The Minnesota Orchestra is performing seven soundtracks next season, including “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” (by John Williams), Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” (by Bernard Herrmann) and “Home Alone” (also by Williams). That is almost double the number a decade ago. On average, 36% of film concert attendees are taking in a symphony concert for the first time, the orchestra said.
“The bottom line is that it’s an income generator, and it also brings in new audiences into the concert hall, which orchestras are always trying to accomplish,” said Sarah Hicks, the principal conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra’s Live at Orchestra Hall, a series focused on popular music that includes film concerts. The ensemble has found that 38% of those who attend the live soundtrack performances purchase ticket packages that include at least two other programs.
Performances like this have been around for decades, though it used to be much harder to strip the music out of

“Star Wars” fans take photos with people in costumes at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, where the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performed a live soundtrack for “The Empire Strikes Back,” May 2, 2026. Live soundtrack performances, one conductor said, are going to “become an expected part of an orchestra‘s offerings, rather than being viewed as a special or outlying concert event.” (Nate Smallwood/The New York Times)
films. Sergei Eisenstein’s battle film “Alexander Nevsky,” scored by Sergei Prokofiev, was performed by the National Symphony Orchestra in 1989 at Wolf Trap in Virginia. The next year, the ensemble accompanied another EisensteinProkofiev film, “Ivan the Terrible.” Around that time, some orchestras presented “Bugs Bunny on Broadway,” a concert musical starring the famed cartoon rabbit.
There is also a long tradition of classical composers, like Prokofiev, writing film scores: Erich Wolfgang Korngold, the Viennese prodigy who penned many hit operas before fleeing Nazi rule and hitting it big in Hollywood, or Franz Waxman, the German composer who won two Oscars in the 1950s for “Sunset Boulevard” and “A Place in the Sun.” And film music has made its way into the concert hall; Prokofiev reworked “Nevsky” as a cantata, and Williams has regularly conducted suites based on his soundtracks.
In some ways, film scores can be more challenging than traditional symphonic works. Musicians typically have familiarity with the classics, having played them for many years, as opposed to the underscoring for the snowball fight in “Elf.”
During performances, orchestra musicians often wear ear pieces to monitor a click track, since the score needs to match the film exactly. (For older movies, there was an analog clock to synchronize the music.) There is “no margin for error,” said Bill Buchman, a bassoonist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which 20 years ago performed music for Charlie Chaplin’s “City Lights” and some film excerpts but has programmed four full-length movies this season. And the scores can be technically difficult, too, while requiring a different sort of endurance; soundtracks aren’t recorded all at once, but in snippets.
“The vast majority of them were not intended to be performed live along with a screening of the movie,” Buchman said. “They were written to be recorded on a soundstage, and you had a chance to go back and do retakes of things that didn’t quite go right. Or they even had a chance in the editing room to slow things down, speed things up or cut things in order to make it fit with what they needed for the movie.”
Although live soundtrack performances bring in muchneeded revenue for orchestras across the country, some, particularly the musicians, question whether the concerts devalue their art form.
“I’ll be perfectly honest,” said Ryan Fleur, the president and CEO of the Philadelphia Orchestra. “We have some musicians that feel very strongly that this wasn’t the reason that they went to conservatory.”
Jim Nova, a trombonist with the Pittsburgh Symphony, said of film scores, “I don’t think anyone is as enthusiastic as I am. I mean, I love this music.”
“I have friends who live in Los Angeles who have played on a lot of film scores, and they say that film scoring is like 95% boredom and 5% terror,” Nova said. “You’ll be plugging along playing something, and it’s not really that hard, and then you turn the page and there’s something that’s basically almost unplayable.”
Hicks said that there used to be a “certain resistance” to performing live soundtracks because the musicians weren’t trained for them.
“There was some sort of attitude,” she said, “that soundtracks and score music was somehow lesser and orchestras still do have this curatorial responsibility to perform the great works of art.”
Some of the difference in opinion is generational. Younger musicians have grown up with these concerts and expect to perform them. “Half the brass players probably in the world would credit their desire to play trumpet, trombone and French horn to the ‘Star Wars’ soundtrack,” said Ben Dettelback, a 28-year-old trombonist in the Syracuse Orchestra. “You just listen to any John Williams. That’s real music.”
If there is any — to use “Star Wars” parlance — rebellion against film scores brewing among musicians, it may be futile. Live soundtrack concerts are reliable sellers, and there is now an industry that facilitates these shows by securing rights, creating orchestrations and printing sheet music.
Film performances, Hicks said, are going to “become an expected part of an orchestra’s offerings, rather than being viewed as a special or outlying concert event.”
In one sign of that future, excerpts from “The Imperial March” (Darth Vader’s theme in “Star Wars”) and selections from “Harry Potter” are beginning to pop up in some orchestra auditions. The reason, Nova said, is “because you’re much more likely to play those things nowadays in various concerts than you are to play some of the really heavy classical pieces.”

Abroad revival in investment banking is taking hold on Wall Street, fueled by a surge in IPOs, mergers and debt issuance.
The biggest U.S. banks said this week that deal activity is strengthening across their investment banking businesses, suggesting the broad-based recovery that has eluded the industry for years is gaining momentum.
Investment banking fees at the six largest U.S. banks surged 45% on average in the second quarter from a year earlier, with Morgan Stanley reporting the strongest percentage growth.
“Even with very strong investment banking revenues this

in the second quarter, according to Renaissance Capital, driven by the historic listing of Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
The resurgence also reached sponsor-backed companies, as several private equity and venture capital-owned firms returned to public markets.
That reopened an important exit channel for financial sponsors, many of whom had been forced to hold portfolio companies longer than expected while the IPO market remained subdued.
“As we enter the second half, the pipeline looks healthy,” Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser said, adding that the bank is looking to invest in talent to fill gaps that would help it gain market share, including in M&A.
Wall Street is also preparing for the U.S. IPOs of Anthropic and OpenAI, which have filed confidentially. Reuters has reported the listings could come as soon as this year, and analysts expect each company to be valued at around $1 trillion.

quarter, our backlog increased to its highest level in five years and its second highest level on record, underpinned by a record advisory backlog,” Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon said on a call with analysts on Tuesday.
Years of elevated interest rates, market volatility and tougher regulatory scrutiny kept companies from pursuing deals and public listings. More recently, conflict in the Middle East and uncertainty over AI’s economic impact prompted a brief bout of caution, but neither proved enough to derail the recovery.
U.S.
Announced global M&A volumes have hit over $3 trillion so far in 2026, climbing more than 40% from a year earlier, according to Dealogic.
“Client engagement remained broad-based with activity across capital markets, strategic transactions, liquidity management,” Bank of America Chief Financial Officer Alastair Borthwick told analysts on a call.
Technology companies, particularly AI firms and the “picks-and-shovels” businesses supplying the computing infrastructure needed to support the AI boom, have dominated activity in 2026. Activity also accelerated in the healthcare, utilities and energy sectors.
“The pipeline remains quite robust, and the current activity levels seem to be encouraging more activity,” JPMorgan CFO Jeremy Barnum said.
Morningstar analysts said the “investment banking supercycle” appears to have room to run, though the business remains inherently volatile. The research firm added it does not expect a “material contraction” until 2028 or later.
Expectations of stronger investment banking profits have helped lift Wall Street bank shares this year, although the increases are more modest than in recent years due to concerns about high valuations.

The Trump administration has lurched back into a war against Iran that had never really ended.
When the war started more than four months ago, U.S. forces targeted Iranian military bases, missile launchers, ships and naval facilities. Israel, fighting alongside the United States, hit leadership targets, hoping to bring down Iran’s hard-line government.
Their record of success has been mixed, at best. Israel killed the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but the leaders who succeeded him were even more hard-line. U.S.

Mourners follow the truck carrying the coffin of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the former supreme leader of Iran, in the holy city of Mashhad, Iran, on Thursday afternoon, July 9, 2026. The latest phase of the U.S. military campaign in Iran has a new focus, but not necessarily a clearer strategy. (Emile Ducke/The New York Times)
forces struck thousands of targets, but did not destroy Iran’s ability to control the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway through which about 20% of the world’s oil typically flows.
For roughly 90 days beginning in April, an on-again-off-again ceasefire prevailed. And then it was over.
The United States now appears to be entering Round 2 of its military campaign. This round has a new focus — but not necessarily a clearer strategy.
Iran’s ability to control the strait, despite the pummeling its navy took, is by far the most important lesson of the first phase of the war. So it is no surprise that the Trump administration is focused on trying to loosen Iran’s grip on it.
Last week, in retaliation for attacks on tankers, President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes on dozens of targets in Iran, including coastal radars, anti-ship missile launchers and a fleet of small Iranian attack boats.
After a short lull, the United States hit 140 military targets in the first of three consecutive days of heavy bombing this week.
U.S. forces carried out new rounds of attacks on Iran throughout Tuesday and resumed a naval blockade of Iranian ports, a strategy that showed some success in the earlier phase.
The strikes are intended to open the waterway to shipping. The purpose of the na-
craft operating across the Middle East,” Central Command said in a statement announcing the resumption of the blockade. “American forces remain vigilant, lethal, and ready.”
In the strikes last week, U.S. forces hit more than 170 Iranian military targets. In three consecutive days of heavy bombing this week, the United States has hit 140 military targets.
Analysts said the Trump administration was sending a pointed message to the government in Tehran that the United States was willing to broaden its mission again and hit sites that have both military and civilian uses.
But senior U.S. officials said the real focus of the current phase is undoubtedly the strait.
So far, Trump had not ordered resumption of an all-out conflict, in part because that could prompt Iran to target not only U.S. military bases in Gulf countries like Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, but also energy infrastructure in those nations. Attacks on those facilities could send oil and natural gas prices skyrocketing even higher.
val blockade is to put economic pressure on Iran by choking off its trade and to flex U.S. military might.
Trump was quick to declare success.
“The Strait of Hormuz is open to ALL Ship traffic except for Iran — and that is because of their lying, violent, malicious leadership, which is taking them down the path of TOTAL DESTRUCTION,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday morning.
But exactly what the U.S. military will do to enforce the blockade, and how far it will go to exert control of the strait, is not clear.
A key question is whether Trump will consider an operation to take the strait’s Kharg Island, a key export hub for Iran’s oil.
Trump publicly mused about ordering the Marines to take control of the island during the first phase of the war, but ultimately abandoned those plans for fear of high U.S. casualties.
Such an operation would be a far bigger escalation than Trump has undertaken so far. But it would be difficult, and lives could be lost in either taking or holding the island.
The United States continues to have a fearsome arsenal in the region, including two aircraft carriers, and dozens of carrier- and land-based attack and surveillance planes.
“There are currently more than 20 U.S. Navy warships and hundreds of military air-
Senior officials said the goal of the new military campaign is to force Iran to allow tankers and other commercial cargo ships to pass freely through the strait, and ultimately to return to the bargaining table to resume nascent talks on more difficult, long-term issues like the fate of Iran’s highly enriched uranium.
Administration officials acknowledge that the military strategy is not without risks. Iran has shown it has an asymmetric advantage. Iranian forces do not have to hit every ship passing through the strait, or sink any of them. They only have to cause enough damage and issue enough threats to scare shipping companies and insurers.
This week, Iranian missiles struck two crude oil carriers that were transiting the southern part of the strait. The attack killed an Indian crew member. Another tanker, carrying liquefied natural gas, was also hit and caught fire near the Omani coast.
Senior U.S. officials said time remains on the American side as Iran’s economy collapses.
During the uneasy peace, Iran was able to get many of its tankers out, and to empty storage tanks that were overflowing with oil. The resumed blockade will cause that oil to back up once more, and the money Iran has made from its oil exports will begin to dry up.
But the real question is: Can Iran’s hardline leadership outlast Trump’s anxiety over rising oil prices?

The United States has put a $25 million bounty on his head. Federal prosecutors say he trafficked tons of cocaine. The U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions for embezzlement and the U.N. accuses him of terrorizing opponents.
Still, a lengthy resume of alleged wrongdoing has not kept Diosdado Cabello, a top Venezuelan government minister, from working closely with senior U.S. officials — a relationship that has become more public following two major earthquakes.
A senior U.S. diplomat shook Cabello’s hand and patted him on the shoulder at a public event this month. U.S. generals sat across from him at a meeting the next day, and were photographed laughing with him before the gathering began.
Cabello’s overnight transformation from a top U.S. target into a tolerated, even accepted, partner has arguably been the most unexpected result of the Trump administration’s military intervention in Venezuela in January.
To supporters of U.S. policy, the accommodation with Cabello is a pragmatic concession to achieve greater stability in Venezuela. To President Donald Trump’s opponents, Cabello’s enduring prominence in power is the most glaring example of the administration’s betrayal of the Venezuelan people’s desire for political change.
The raid by U.S. Special Forces in January that toppled Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, turned the country into a de facto U.S. protectorate.
To control Venezuela, the Trump administration has chosen to work with officials in Maduro’s autocratic regime rather than the pro-democracy opposition. As a result, many of the most infamous enforcers of the fallen leader’s repressive apparatus have been reintegrated into a new, U.S.-sponsored government.
The back-to-back earthquakes that devastated Venezuela last month have only deepened the Trump administration’s cooperation with Maduro’s inner circle.
U.S. officials have declared their unequivocal support for the interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, and rushed aid and hundreds of soldiers to assist in rescue and reconstruction efforts.
In practice, that has created a jarring dynamic — many Venezuelan officials who deal daily with American counterparts are wanted by the United States on criminal charges or have been banned from doing business with Americans by the U.S. government.
In some cases, Trump administration officials now work with Venezuelans targeted by other Trump officials during the U.S. president’s current or previous administration.
Take the case of Cabello, a founding member of the Socialist Party, which has ruled Venezuela for the past three decades. Widely seen as one of Venezuela’s most powerful men, Cabello kept his post as the country’s interior minister after the U.S. raid. Since then, he has embraced his new role as a promoter of American interests.

arrest and/or conviction.”
Cabello, nevertheless, is prominently involved in his government’s earthquake response with the United States.
He toured a disaster zone this month with John Barrett, the head of the U.S. Embassy in Venezuela. A video posted by the Los Angeles Fire Department, which had helped with rescue efforts, showed Barrett shaking Cabello’s hand and patting him on the shoulder.
Barrett evaded the question when asked at a news conference if the bounty on Cabello remained in place.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio was asked the same question during a news conference in May and said: “The U.S. policy on this issue has not changed.”
The State Department did not provide an on-the-record comment.
Cabello, once an ardent foe of the United States, has drastically shifted his rhetoric and moved to reshape his public image since Maduro’s downfall. His transformation is driven by an overriding goal — to be useful to Americans, and in doing so, play a constructive part in his country’s new phase, people who know him said.
After decades of diatribes against American imperialism, he has dropped any criticism of Washington and traded his usual garish red shirts and paramilitary outfits for more somber attire, including an occasional suit and tie.
Months after warning that a U.S. attack on Venezuela would result in “another Vietnam,” he has been promoting military cooperation with Washington.
Cabello’s extensive influence among Venezuela’s military and security forces has earned him a spot in the country’s informal ruling clique. He effectively shares power with Rodríguez and her brother, Jorge Rodríguez, the leader of congress. All three are longtime Maduro lieutenants.
Political analysts have called the arrangement the triumvirate, with Cabello responsible for maintaining domestic security and stability.
But Cabello is also a defendant in a drug trafficking case that U.S. prosecutors have brought against Maduro, who awaits trial in a New York City jail. An indictment says Cabello “worked with other members of the Venezuelan regime to coordinate the shipment” of 5 1/2 tons of cocaine from Venezuela.
The U.S. Treasury separately imposed sanctions on Cabello for corruption during Trump’s first term. The U.N. has accused Cabello of being one of the leaders of Venezuela’s repression apparatus.
In addition, the Chilean government accuses Cabello of ordering the assassination in 2024 of an exiled Venezuelan dissident in Santiago, the Chilean capital. The Chilean prosecutor leading the case, Héctor Barros, said in a statement that his office is seeking to bring Cabello to justice, but added that the case is complicated by Venezuela’s extradition restrictions.
A spokesperson for Cabello did not respond to requests for comment.
The State Department lists Cabello as a “wanted” criminal and offers $25 million “for information leading to the
Cabello also exerts influence among numerous progovernment paramilitary groups. Since a brief show of force in the week following Maduro’s capture, these groups have largely stayed away from Venezuelan streets, a development some analysts attribute to Cabello’s instructions.
Cabello is attempting to extend his power by promoting his daughter, Daniella Cabello, as a ruling party candidate in future elections, according to several people close to the Venezuelan government. He and his allies have argued that Daniella Cabello, 30, the tourism minister, would fare better than the unpopular Rodríguez, these people said. They discussed sensitive topics on condition of anonymity.
Cabello’s future remains precarious even as he assumes a more prominent public role. He risks being arrested if Washington’s plans for Venezuela change.
Inside the triumvirate, Cabello has proved a valuable partner to Rodríguez and her brother. For now a longtime ruling party rivalry between the siblings and Cabello has been set aside by a mutual desire to maintain power under U.S. pressure. But that has not resulted in mutual trust, the people close to the government said.

Ponce outlasts San Germán, Santurce rallies to beat Caguas in OT
By THE STAR STAFF
The Leones of Ponce and the Cangrejeros of Santurce both notched road victories on Tuesday night in the National Superior Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) league semifinals.
Ponce defeated the host Atléticos of San Germán 95-91 at Arquelio Torres Ramírez Coliseum to take a 2-1 lead in the Conference B series.
The Atléticos took a 91-90 lead on a free throw by George Hamilton with 1:50 remaining in the fourth quarter. However, Thomas Robinson responded with two consecutive baskets in the paint to put Ponce back in front, 94-91, with 59 seconds on the clock.
San Germán came up short in their final offensive opportunities with a missed shot by Hamilton and a missed three-pointer by Arguster Daniels IV. Subsequently, a foul on Ponce captain Jezreel de Jesús sent the combo guard to the free-throw line, where he made one of two attempts to set the final score at 95-91 with just six seconds left to play.
Tjader Fernández led a balanced Ponce attack with 22 points, supported by Robinson

Back-to-back baskets in the paint by Thomas Robinson (36) put the Leones of Ponce ahead for good with less than a minute to play in their Conference B semifinal game against the Atléticos of San Germán on Tuesday night.
with 18 points and seven rebounds; Alejandro Vázquez scored 16 points, Jalen Crutcher had 14 points and nine assists, and Brady Manek contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.
André Curbelo recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Atléticos. Hamilton contributed 19 points, while Daniels IV finished with 13 points, and Georgie Pacheco and Nick Perkins added 12 points each.
At Roger Mendoza Coliseum in Caguas, meanwhile, the Cangrejeros defeated the Criollos of Caguas 105-100 in overtime to go up 2-1 in the Conference A semifinals.
The Cangrejeros extended a narrow 46-45 halftime lead to 70-64 after three quarters, but the Criollos rallied in the fourth period, taking the lead in the closing minutes and then forcing overtime with the score tied at 86.

MLB’s strikeout record is in danger. The AllStars whiffing their way toward it don’t care.
By SAM BLUM / THE ATHLETIC
Anger and frustration seemed to emanate from Mark Reynolds every time he was asked about his strikeout total during the 2009 season. He had set the MLB record the year before with 204 strikeouts, and when he shattered it easily again, there were questions.
“I don’t care,” he said that September, then started ignoring inquiries about it. Today, he chalks up his attitude to a sense of shame.
“When I set the record, it was embarrassing,” he said this month. “I didn’t want to talk to reporters about it.”
The record he set that season, 223 strikeouts, still stands. Players have come close to surpassing him. Eight have gotten within 10 strikeouts since that fateful season. One player, Adam Dunn, got within one. Two players got within two. No one, however, has topped Reynolds, who retired in 2019 and now champions the mark as his baseball legacy.
“That’s a badge of honor, man,” Reynolds said. “I’ve got a big league record.”
What changed?
“Now, I’m older, have perspective,” he said. “People ask me, ‘Do you want someone to break it?’ I’m like: ‘No. How many big league records do you have?’”
Reynolds’ record is once again relevant
because his small slice of baseball history is at grave risk: Four players are roughly on a pace to surpass him.
The Philadelphia Phillies’ designated hitter, Kyle Schwarber, leads the group, with 144 in just 93 games. Three others — Los Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto (133), A’s first baseman Nick Kurtz (130) and Washington Nationals right fielder James Wood (129) — all have a shot at eclipsing 223.
But the perception of the strikeout is not the same today as it was in Reynolds’ time. Strikeouts are far more common across baseball, and hitters have come to see them as the cost of doing business in an era when pitchers throw harder and spin the ball more than ever.
both ends of the court to secure the victory and reclaim home-court advantage.
Kenneth Faried was the dominant force for the Cangrejeros, recording 17 points, 25 rebounds (including six offensive boards), four assists, two steals and two blocks -- a performance that earned him the game’s highest efficiency rating at 44.
Ian Clark and Isaiah Piñeiro each contributed 17 points for Santurce, while Ángel Rodríguez added 13 points, five assists and four rebounds, David Huertas scored 10 points and Ángel Matías chipped in with 12.
Travis Trice led the Criollos offense with 26 points and 11 assists. Louis King added 22 points and 10 rebounds, Hiram Huertas finished with 11 points and five rebounds, and Christian López Santiago contributed nine points.

“I’m not anxious about it. I mean, it is what it is,” Schwarber said of the record. “There’s a lot of other good things that I’ve done. I hate the perception of, ‘You sell out for this, you sell out for that.’ That’s just like the farthest thing from the truth.
“We’re hitters at the end of the day. And we want to be good professional hitters. Average is just as important as homers. And RBI are just as important as any other stat, too, right?”
The odd part, as Schwarber suggests, is that the race to this unenviable crown is being waged by very productive hitters. Three of the four were named to the All-Star Game. And Neto, the lone non-All-Star, has 41 extra-base hits and 2.5 wins above replacement, as calculated by Baseball Reference, this year.
This was true in Reynolds’ time as well. His 2009 season was not just a record-breaking strikeout campaign — it was also the best season of his 13-year career. He hit 44 homers, posted an .892 on-base plus slugging percentage and earned his only votes for the Most Valuable Player Award.
After all, no one gets the chance to strike out that much without doing well in the other plate appearances.
Wood even said he came across an Instagram post that showed the strikeout leader for every position. Seeing the names, he concluded, the lineup would be World Series caliber.
“I think the guys who are doing the most damage get pitched to a lot more carefully; they get less pitches to hit,” Wood said. “There’s two sides to it. There’s how the pitchers are pitching guys, where you’ve got to be really disciplined and not chasing. Also just trying to do damage. You obvi-

ously sacrifice a little bit of contact trying for more damage.”
In 1975, the league strikeout rate was 12.9%, and it gradually climbed nearly every year. By 1995, it was 16.2%. In Reynolds’ record season, it was 18%, and it sits around 22% today. Increased velocity and movement, a prioritization on hitting home runs and hitting for power, and more pitching data available are all contributing factors to the rise in strikeouts.
“The balls are starting to move way more than they used to,” Neto said. “It’s tough. Pitchers know how to throw a strike-to-ball pitch, or ball-to-strike pitch. It’s just tough. This league’s tough.
“I don’t pay attention to those numbers because they’re going to happen. It’s just a matter of how you bounce back after that. I don’t want to let it be a snowball effect.”
Neto is on a pace to strike out 222 times this season. His candidacy for the record will come down to the wire. Same goes for Wood, who is on a pace for 215 after cutting down on his strikeouts recently; his bid for history came up short last season, when he finished with 221, the third most ever. Kurtz is on a 219-strikeout pace.
Schwarber, however, sits first on the leaderboard. More than halfway through this season, he is on a pace for 240 strikeouts. If anyone is going to take the crown, at least as of now, it’s him.
“It’s a double-edged sword,” Schwarber said. “It really is. It’s frustrating. And it’s funny.”
He added: “The game’s changed so much even from when I came into the big leagues in 2015. It was easier to touch the ball, you know? It was easier to not strike out as much.”
The history of this record reflects the evolution of overall strikeout tendencies, with multiple players holding the record for decades.
Four players have held the strikeout record for longer than Reynolds. Sam Wise’s 104 strikeouts for the 1884 Boston Beaneaters hung around for 20 years. Jake Stahl struck out 128 times in 1910, a record that stood for 28 years, before Vince DiMaggio struck out 134 times, a record for 18 years.
Bobby Bonds was the strikeout king for 34 years, striking out 189 times in 1970; seven players had at least that many in 2025.
“Vince is the only player I know who could strike out three times in one game and not be embarrassed,” Casey Stengel, who managed him during that whiff-filled 1938 season with the Boston Bees, once said. “He’d walk into the clubhouse whistling. Everybody would be feeling sorry for him, but Vince always thought he was doing good.”
DiMaggio’s easy embrace of his strikeouts was more of an acquired skill for Reynolds, who needed the passage of time to come to terms with his record. But he understands that it may not be his for much longer — it will fall this season, or maybe next, or the year after that. The game, he conceded, has evolved to be more accepting of players with his offensive profile.
He wishes he was more of a complete hitter, of course. Perhaps a better eye or penchant for contact would have turned Reynolds, who hit 298 MLB homers, into a perennial All-Star.
But now, with only time to reflect, he is at peace with the ballplayer he was, and would welcome celebrating another just like him.
He said he should present a strikeout award to the player who breaks his record on ESPN’s “SportsCenter.”

“It’s eventually going to happen at some point,” he continued. “But as of right now, today, I’m still the strikeout king.”
