OMB details sources to fund tax reform, which is $200 million short By THE STAR STAFF

ffice of Management and Budget (OMB) Executive Director Orlando Rivera Berríos detailed before lawmakers earlier this week the funds allocated to cover the cost of proposed amendments to Puerto Rico’s Internal Revenue Code. The latest tax reform proposal, which will reduce tax rates for taxpayers, costs about $500 million, but the government is more than $200 million short. Rivera Berríos said simplifying tax returns and implementing other cuts would generate some $280 million in savings, while exemptions for electric vehicles and solar equipment account for the remainder. “We’re talking, Mr. Chairman, that the simplification of tax returns, with a discount of 5 and 8 percent, generates $280 million in savings,” the OMB chief

said during a public hearing on Tuesday. “We have the exemption for electric vehicles, which generates $30 million, the exemption for imported promotional materials at $1 million, and the exemption

for solar equipment at $18 million. That totals $329 million. With the reduction in public spending we’ve carried out in 2026 and that is being implemented in the 2027 budget — related to professional services and purchased services — we’re talking about another $227 million.” “With that, we end up with a positive balance of about $5 or $6 million,” he added. Regarding potential agency consolidations and reductions in government leases, Rivera Berríos noted that the $227 million figure also includes adjustments such as relocating agencies to shared buildings. “That reduction in leases is already included in the 2027 budget,” he said. The hearing was held before the House Finance Committee, chaired by Rep. Eddie Charbonier Chinea, as part of the evaluation of House Bill 1014. The measure seeks to amend multiple sections

of Puerto Rico’s 2011 Internal Revenue Code to reduce the tax burden on island taxpayers. The session also included participation from Treasury Secretary Ángel Pantoja Rodríguez, the OMB, and the Puerto Rico Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Authority, which contributed to the fiscal and budgetary analysis of the proposal. The proposed tax reform has yet to obtain the approval of the Financial Oversight and Management Board, which has also weighed in, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach: “Puerto Rico needs a tax reform, but it must be fiscally responsible and aligned with the Fiscal Plan,” the entity stated. “The Oversight Board will continue working with the governor and the Legislature on responsible reforms to simplify Puerto Rico’s complex and burdensome tax code, while ensuring sufficient resources for the financial plan’s needs.”

Puerto Rico’s tax system under scrutiny: Study reveals heavy burden, structural gaps By THE STAR STAFF

A

study by the Instituto de Libertad Económica (ILE; Economic Freedom Institute) has shed light on Puerto Rico’s tax system, revealing significant disparities compared to the 50 U.S. states. The research, conducted between 2022 and 2024, noted that Puerto Rico ranks last among U.S. jurisdictions in economic freedom and ease of doing business, largely due to its complex tax environment. The report, which comes after the government proposed the second phase of a tax reform, notes that Puerto Rico’s tax structure is highly concentrated, with nearly 70% of state and local revenues coming from consumption and corporate taxes. Property taxes, by contrast, account for just 7.3%, far below the U.S. average of 27.4%, reflecting weak enforcement and low property valuations. Federal tax collections on the island totaled $5.39 billion in fiscal year 2023, surpassing local tax collections of $2.31 billion. Residents paid $2.33 in federal taxes for every dollar in local taxes, despite Puerto Rico’s partial integration into the federal tax system. Overall, individuals and businesses paid $23.28 billion in combined taxes -- 87%

concentrated in income, consumption, and social security contributions. The study also underscores the system’s reliance on high-income taxpayers: 7% of filers, earning over $100,000, contributed more than 62% of individual income tax revenue. Meanwhile, 40% of taxpayers had no tax liability. Puerto Rico’s tax burden exceeds that of all 50 states when measured by gross domestic product (GDP) and gross national product (GNP): “The total combined burden -- including federal, state, and local taxes -- amounts to 18.2% based on GDP and 23.9% based on GNP.” This figure, the report notes, is “greater than or comparable to that of 24 states where all federal taxes are paid.” The report by the ILE -- a non-partisan, non-profit think tank founded in 2019 in San Juan and dedicated to promoting individual liberty, free markets, and limited government to foster economic growth and opportunity -aims to inform ongoing government efforts to simplify the tax system, promote fiscal equity, and reduce the burden on individuals, offering a comprehensive analysis of structural weaknesses and comparative benchmarks. The report also seeks to fill a critical gap in comparative tax research, noting that “Puerto Rico is absent from comparative studies on

taxation conducted in the United States and other countries due to the lack of reliable data on its tax types and rates.” The study underscores the uniqueness of its scope: “In Puerto Rico, there is no record of prior work comparable in scope and objectives to the one proposed in this study.”

While past reforms have focused on fiscal adjustments, the report argues they have failed to address structural issues: “Such reforms have included changes to tax rates as well as other specific adjustments, without addressing the system as a whole from a structural and comprehensive perspective.”

‘Like a military occupation’: Clashes rise with federal agents in Minneapolis By THOMAS FULLER and JAZMINE ULLOA

T

he video shows a young employee in a reflective vest being hauled away by federal agents from the entrance of a Target store in a Minneapolis suburb. “I’m a U.S. citizen!” the worker shouted as the armed agents shoved him into an SUV on Monday, after he had directed expletives at one. “U.S. citizen! U.S. citizen!” In and around Minneapolis in recent days — in quiet residential neighborhoods and busy shopping districts, at gas station and big box store parking lots — similar chaotic scenes are unfolding, an escalation of tensions between residents and federal agents as the Trump administration intensifies its immigration crackdown in Minnesota following the killing of Renee Good by an immigration officer last week. “It feels like our community is under siege by our own federal government,” said state Rep. Michael Howard, a Democrat whose district includes Richfield, where the Target employee and another colleague were seized Monday. Howard said both workers were U.S. citizens and were later released. The Department of Homeland Security said the Target worker seen in the video was arrested in connection with “assaulting, resisting or impeding federal officers.” It was unclear Tuesday if the employee was charged. Federal officers are descending on streets in what they say is an effort to find immigrants lacking legal status with criminal and dangerous backgrounds. They are displaying a show of force they argue is necessary in cities and states where local governments and law enforcement agencies have refused to help them. But many residents, business owners and immigrant workers have denounced the tactics, saying the agents are indiscriminately sweeping up hardworking friends and neighbors based on racial and ethnic profiling, and are increasingly organizing to push back.

Federal agents arrest a protester on the street amid an operation in Minneapolis, on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026. (David Guttenfelder/The New York Times) The skirmishes between residents and the heavily armed federal agents have been especially nerve-wracking for residents of Minneapolis, where the memories of the 2020 murder of George Floyd — and the protests and rioting that followed — are still raw. This time, residents and elected officials say, the fear is not abuses by law enforcement but an encroaching federal government. Department of Homeland Security officials have made roughly 2,400 immigration-related arrests in Minnesota since Nov. 29, said Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the department. Some of those immigrants have been convicted of sex crimes, armed robbery, drug crimes and other offenses, federal officials said. But it was not clear how many people immigration agents had arrested had criminal records. The number of arrests does not include protesters. As the surge has intensified, so have the efforts among activists, community volunteers and livestreamers to document federal agents’ aggressive tactics. Federal officials and local residents both say the presence of the other on the street is making the situation worse. Local concerns over the federal government grew on Tuesday when six federal prosecutors in Minnesota resigned over the Justice Department’s push to investigate the widow of Good and questions over whether the shooter would be investigated. Images circulating on social media over the past two days and verified by The New York

Times show agents approaching a car at a gas station, seeking out the immigration status of the driver and demanding that he open the door. When he doesn’t, they break the window of the car and remove him. Gregory Bovino, a Border Patrol official, yells at bystanders to back up. In another video, Elliott Payne, president of the Minneapolis City Council, is seen being shoved by an agent. Payne said in an interview Tuesday that federal agents with assault rifles and combat gear were patrolling the streets in convoys. At night they shine lights from the vehicles onto pedestrians, he said. “This is a military occupation, and it feels like a military occupation,” Payne said. According to Payne, federal agents scream obscenities at residents and repeatedly holster and unholster their weapons. “It’s like living in a war zone,” he said. The federal presence was not ubiquitous. Residents said the federal agents were concentrated in areas with large immigrant populations and were absent in others. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that federal agents were in Minnesota to remove “convicted murderers, drug dealers and addicts, rapists, violent released and escaped prisoners, dangerous people from foreign mental institutions and insane asylums, and other deadly criminals.” Trump wrote on social media that “THE DAY OF RECKONING AND RETRIBUTION” is coming for Minnesota, without elaborating.

On Monday, DHS said Minnesota was not cooperating with the federal government and said 1,360 illegal immigrants were in Minnesota prisons. The department demanded that they be handed over to the federal authorities when released. Howard, the state representative, said federal agents for the most part did not have warrants and were staging in the parking lots of stores and apartment complexes and targeting people of color, asking for proof of citizenship. “Nothing about that is making our communities more safe,” he said. “We have many people in our community that are undocumented, but they are valued members of our community.” For many in Minneapolis, where 70% of people voted Democratic in the 2024 presidential election, the resistance from neighborhood groups and community volunteers has felt empowering in what has felt like a hopeless time, residents said in interviews. But even some of those in favor of the community defense efforts were on edge that protesters could go too far. Residents said they were worried that with the number of agents patrolling the area and heightened tensions, weapons would be fired, deliberately or by accident. “It’s just a matter of time before something else occurs. Another person shot. ICE agents injured,” said Maurice Ward, 54, who runs a social justice organization. Payne said he was encouraging residents to take video of federal agents, which he said could be used as evidence in legal action that state and local officials are pursuing against the federal government over the deployments. A lawsuit filed Monday by the state of Minnesota and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul asked a judge to block the federal government from “implementing the unprecedented surge in Minnesota.” The lawsuit said “thousands of armed and masked D.H.S. agents have stormed the Twin Cities to conduct militarized raids and carry out dangerous, illegal and unconstitutional stops and arrests.” On Monday night near a fast-food restaurant in south Minneapolis, whistling began to fill the air, a warning by volunteers that federal agents were in the area. Two immigrant workers locked the doors of the restaurant. Muna Ahmed, 37, who had walked in to order a sandwich, was grateful for the signal. A former hospital interpreter of Somali heritage, Ahmed was in disbelief over the hostility of federal officers on the streets. “This is not the America I know,” she said.

Trump supports the protesters, except those protesting him and has chastised European democracies for being insufficiently tolerant of right-wing movements. But the president told oppressive Arab states where internal opposition is forbidden (and where his family does business) that the United States would no longer be “giving you lectures on how to live.” That is a realpolitik that might have challenged even former Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, the legendary master of unsentimental geopolitics. “One can say that Trump’s view is rather like Kissinger’s: nations are closed black boxes,” said Elliott Abrams, who served three Republican presidents, most recently as Trump’s special representative for Venezuela in his first term. “You deal with the leaders who are in power, not the populations or opposition leaders,” he said. “Human rights and democracy arguments can harm relations with the existing rulers. This is especially significant for Trump because he values his personal relationships so highly.” Those personal relationships and personal instincts have made for a highly improvisational presidency. The Trump who decried foreign intervention in his first term has now bombed seven countries in his second. The Trump who once scorned nation building is now talking about rebuilding Venezuela, not to mention the Gaza Strip. With his eye on Greenland and maybe Panama and even Canada, isolationism has morphed into imperialism. The split-screen television images of mass protests in the streets of Minneapolis and Tehran in recent days have invariably highlighted the complications and contradictions of Trump’s presidency. “Across the world, from Iran to Minneapolis, people are fighting for freedom and against violence and authoritarianism,” Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pa., wrote on social media. “Yet as Trump praises the courage of Iranian citizens as they take to the streets, his own lawless agents are inciting violence against those protesting ICE here at home.”

The wages of the ayatollahs’ antisemitism By BRET STEPHENS

N

otable among the slogans being chanted by the protesters flooding Iran’s streets is this one: “Neither Gaza nor Lebanon, my life for Iran.” That’s more than a repudiation of the regime’s foreign policy. It’s a reminder that a policy of antisemitism has a way of eventually destroying the antisemite. Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, the regime has had a singular obsession with Jews. The suppurating hatred of Israel is downstream from that. The foundational political text of the regime, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s “Governance of the Jurist,” is shot through with antisemitism. As in: “From the very beginning, the historical movement of Islam has had to contend with the Jews, for it was they who first established anti-Islamic propaganda.” Iran’s current leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is an avowed Holocaust denier. Though Iran officially tolerates its dwindling Jewish community, the vast majority of Iranian Jews have fled the country, often under perilous circumstances. Iranian foreign policy freely mixes anti-Israel furies with anti-Jewish ones. It has supported Hezbollah, sworn to Israel’s destruction, to the tune of billions of dollars over four decades. It has ordered antisemitic terrorist attacks at long range, including the 1994 bombing of a Jewish cultural center in Buenos Aires, Argentina, that killed 85 people. It has supplied weapons and training for Hamas, along with ballistic missiles for Yemen’s Houthis. It has repeatedly courted international outrage by hosting a conference of Holocaust deniers and antisemitic cartoon contests. The regime also spent decades assembling the elements needed to build a nuclear weapon. One motivation was deterrence and self-defense. Another was given away by this chilling cost-benefit analysis from Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a former president, in a 2001 speech: “The use of one atomic bomb in Israel leaves nothing left, but in the Islamic world, there will only be damage.” All this might at least be intelligible if Iran and Israel had ancient grievances or territorial disputes. Even today, ordinary Iranians themselves are markedly less antisemitic than people in other Middle Eastern states, according to surveys published by the Anti-Defamation League. The current regime’s obsession is purely a function of Islamist ideology, not national interest. That’s what’s at the root of that anti-regime chant. This month, the regime tried to mollify protesters by offering most of its citizens a pathetic $7 monthly stipend amid skyrocketing inflation and a collapsing currency. Yet the same regime managed to send an estimated $1 billion to help Hezbollah rebuild its military capabilities while refusing to make meaningful concessions over its nuclear portfolio, leading to European sanctions that have further crippled the economy. What ordinary Iranians are revolting against isn’t just economic mismanagement and corruption. It’s also a regime that would rather pursue a perpetual jihad against the Zionist enemy than feed its own people. For years, the cruelty of the policy was disguised by its apparent success, as Iranian proxies entrenched themselves across the Middle East and built a so-called ring of fire around the Jewish state. But after the attacks of Oct. 7, 2023, Israel systematically dismantled that ring in the Gaza Strip, Beirut, Damascus, Syria, Sanaa, Yemen, and ultimately Tehran, whose skies the Israeli air force dominated throughout a 12-day war in June. At a stroke, it turned decades of Iranian investment in its efforts to destroy Israel to rubble and ash. It exposed to the Iranian people the regime’s military incompetence and helplessness. And it reminded Iranians that there’s a different path for Muslim states — like the United Arab Emirates, they can be moderate, prosperous, at peace with Israel and just across the Persian Gulf. The knowledge that the regime is brittle is surely part of what is driving Iranians into the streets despite the mounting toll in lives — at least 2,000 so far, according to the regime itself, though possibly much higher. Iran’s leaders seem to realize that their rule is close to being shattered, which is why they’re responding to the protests with a mix of ferocity and diplomatic flexibility. Maybe it will work for a while. But when the regime collapses, as sooner or later it will, its antisemitic politics will have played a large role in its demise. It’s a historic paradox, given what Khomeini and Khamenei intended. It’s also a historic fulfillment: Jews have owed a debt to Persians ever since Cyrus the Great ended the Babylonian Captivity 2,564 years ago and restored Jews to Zion. There’s a broader lesson here in an era when antiJewish politics are gaining broad purchase. Antisemitism is wicked for many reasons, but it’s also wickedly dumb: for fostering a mindset of lurid conspiracy theories; for seeking scapegoats for national failures rather than taking responsibility; for stigmatizing and suppressing a productive and edu-

Societies that have expelled or persecuted their Jewish communities, from Spain to Russia to the Arab world, were all destined for long-term decline. The same has been true for modern-day Iran. And an Iranian people who reclaim their freedom as individuals can also reclaim their reason as a nation.

Five science fiction movies to stream now By ELISABETH VINCENTELLI

T

his month’s picks feature torrents, trolls and time travel. ‘Troll 2’ Since “Troll” (2022) is the most watched non-English language movie on Netflix (according to the streamer), odds were good that a sequel would materialize. Lo and behold, Norwegian director Roar Uthaug is back with more Kaiju mayhem featuring humans in wool sweaters and practical fleece confronting XXL creatures from Nordic folklore. The first movie’s three leads return as government official Andreas (Kim Falck) whisks headstrong paleontologist Nora (Ine Marie Wilmann) to a secret location where a troll is kept in hibernation. Naturally that troll will wake, and military hunk Kris (Mads Sjogard Pettersen) is reactivated, too. Admittedly a troll can stomp over swaths of the country and snack on people, but the sympathetic Nora sees these giants of earth and stone as living creatures provoked by men’s actions. Uthaug’s two films have their share of fun action set pieces, with a troll-on-troll battle in the new one. But what’s more interesting is how they posit the Christianization of Norway as having cut off the country from its homegrown mythology, especially under the lead of St. Olaf in the 12th century. That figure plays a key role in the new movie (it all feels a little Dan Brown). To no one’s shock, “Troll 2” ends by teeing up another installment. Uthaug has referred to a potential “troll-ogy,” and frankly, that name is too good to pass up so let’s go, “Troll 3.” (Stream it on Netflix.) ‘Time Travel Is Dangerous!’ Chris Reading’s deadpan comedy has my vote for best premise of the month: The owners of a vintage shop travel back in time to find inventory. “Troll 2” that looks like a repurposed bumper car, and start using it to source trinkets for their London emporium, Cha Cha Cha (the two stars’ actual shop). In the Middle Ages, for instance, it’s easy to find pewter artifacts in mint condition because they actually are brand-new. Our dingbats draw the attention of a local science club led by the autocratic Martin (Guy Henry), but the real problems start when all those back-and-forth trips through centuries wreck the time-space continuum and Megan ends up stuck in a “temporal sinkhole” from which the gang must rescue her. “Time Travel Is Dangerous!” often made me think of a DIY version of Terry Gilliam at his surreal peak, and it is a sterling example of a certain kind of British humor about the foibles of eccentric characters. Fans of that particular style will especially delight in fun bit turns by Stephen Fry as a voice-over narrator and Jane Horrocks as a scary aviator. (Rent or buy it on most major platforms.) ‘The Great Flood’ It takes only a few minutes for director Kim Byungwoo to create an anxiety-making atmosphere. Single mom An-na (Kim Da-mi, so memorable in “The Witch: Part 1 — The Subversion”) wakes up to see waters outside her windows rise at a freakishly fast pace from the pounding rain, so she and her young son, Ja-in (Kwon Eun-sung), must retreat to a higher floor in their apartment building. But the rain itself isn’t the issue, as Hee-jo (Park Hae-soo, from “Squid Game”), an agent sent to help An-na, informs her: An asteroid hit Antarctica, melting enough water to drown Earth. This is not just a flood but an extinction event, and as an engineer working on an artificial intelligence project that’s key for the survival of the human race, An-na must be saved. As if this weren’t enough, “The Great Flood” adds a time-loop structure to the disaster and AI ones, so the movie covers three subgenres. The storytelling is a little chaotic (pay attention to the numbers on An-na’s T-shirt), so it’s best to just surrender to the fantastic visuals and the general mood of inevitable doom: “The Great Flood” has an eerie lyrical tone, and the way it suggests an almost metaphysical despair is rare in such a pop-culture project. The San Juan Daily Star ‘Lesbian Space Princess’ Don’t be fooled by the bright colors, retro-basic animation and general childlike effervescence: This Australian animated comedy may be sweet, but it’s not for young kids. Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese’s film is an interstellar caper that doubles as an anthology of lesbian jokes. Like, for example, when Princess Saira (voiced by Shabana Azeez, who plays Victoria Javadi on “The Pitt”) falls so hard for bounty hunter Kiki (Bernie Van Tiel) that she’s basically ready to rent a space U-Haul after just a couple of weeks of dating. This is too much too soon for Kiki, who dumps Saira, then promptly gets kidnapped by “straight white maliens” (the comedy group Aunty Donna’s Mark Samual Bonanno, Broden Kelly and Zachary Ruane). Naturally, our princess goes on a quest to find Kiki, accompanied by guitar-wielding Willow (Gemma Chua-Tran) — yes, there are songs. Zaniness ensues, with wall-to-wall nods to lesbian culture, as when Saira’s ship computer (Richard Roxburgh) asks about a sex scene in “Blue Is the Warmest Color.” (Stream it on Fandor. Rent or buy it on most major platforms.) ‘She Loved Blossoms More’ Holed up in their house, three brothers (Aris Balis, Julio Katsis and Panos Papadopoulos) try to build a portal to bring back their dead mother from wherever she ended up. The logistics are hazy, but that doesn’t stop the siblings from doing test runs on a pig and a chicken (animal lovers may want to avert their eyes when those are brought into the machine). Hanging around the compound is Samantha (Sandra Abuelghanam), a friend, lover and fellow partaker of drugs. She, too, goes into the machine, and again, things don’t turn out so great. The movie’s poster gives a clue to her trip’s outcome, which is beautiful and deeply unsettling, like an elaborately misshapen jewel or flower. Body horror hardly ever looks so poetic. Yannis Veslemes’ movie has been lumped in the Greek Weird Wave genre because of its director’s nationality and being undeniably, well, weird. But this visually driven fantasia also shares shelf space with the cryptic dreamscapes of French filmmakers Lucile Hadzihalilovic and Bertrand Mandico, as well as some of the more offbeat work by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (whose regular Dominique Pinon turns up here as the siblings’ father). There is no logic for what happens in this decadent hothouse, but it does exert a kind of languid pull. (Rent or buy it on most major platforms.)

Officials from Denmark, Greenland and the US meet for a ‘frank’ conversation amid Trump’s threats By AMELIA NIERENBERG

enmark, Greenland and the United States have a “fundamental disagreement” over the future of the territory in the North Atlantic, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, the Danish foreign minister, said Wednesday after a White House meeting with top Trump administration officials. The meeting — hours after President Donald Trump said the United States “needs Greenland” — was the first among the three governments and was called to discuss Trump’s repeated threats to buy or take the semiautonomous Danish territory. Afterward, Rasmussen called the discussion “frank” and “constructive” even as he underscored that Denmark has no interest in changing the status quo. “Our perspectives continue to differ,” Rasmussen said after he and Vivian Motzfeldt, the Greenland foreign minister, met with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington. “The president has made his view clear. And we have a different position.” The closed-door conversation came hours after Trump said that “anything less than” American control of Greenland would be “unacceptable,” in a post on Truth Social. “The United States needs Greenland,” he said, renewing his argument that possession of the island was necessary for national security. “NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES,” he added. It was his strongest statement yet on Greenland’s desire to remain a territory of Denmark. Frederiksen has said that an American attack on Greenland — which, as a part of the kingdom of Denmark, is already under the protection of NATO — would destroy the alliance. And Nielsen has been clear that the territory is not interested in an American takeover. “The time has not come for internal discussions and divi-

sion,” Nielsen said Tuesday, speaking of its often fraught relations with Denmark. “The time has come to stand together.” In her comments, Frederiksen agreed, laying out the visiting officials’ strategy for the White House meeting: “We come together, we stay together, and we leave together.” Trump and top officials in his administration have given various explanations of how the United States might take control or ownership of Greenland. Trump has not ruled out taking Greenland with military force, but Rubio has said the president plans to buy it, rather than invade. But buying Greenland may be a nonstarter. Denmark does not have the authority to sell Greenland, and Nielsen has said repeatedly that the territory is not for sale. Ulrik Pram Gad, a Greenland expert at the Danish Institute for International Studies, said the very fact of a face-to-face meeting with U.S. officials was a sign of progress. “The bar for success is very low,” he said. “A success from this meeting would be that we had a meeting,” he said. “It’s a process. We are now talking.” Vance appeared to be a late addition to the meeting, which Rubio announced last week without mentioning the vice president. Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, a senior fellow at the think tank Bruegel in Brussels, said the presence of Vance, a higher-ranking official who has shown a willingness to publicly and aggressively challenge foreign officials, raised the stakes for the meeting. “The fact that it is not just foreign ministers — that it is also JD Vance — is upping the ante a bit,” Kirkegaard said. On Friday and Saturday, a bipartisan delegation of U.S. lawmakers will go to Copenhagen, the Danish capital, to meet with political and business leaders from Denmark and Greenland. crane fell on a train with about 200 passengers and crew members aboard in northeastern Thailand on Wednesday, killing at least 32 people and injuring at least 67 others, the Thai Health Ministry said. The authorities were investigating the accident, which occurred about 9 a.m. on a section of track northeast of Bangkok over which an elevated, high-speed railway is being constructed. The line is planned to extend through Southeast Asia to China. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of Thailand pledged punishment if any wrong-

doing was found. “This incident was an engineering issue, not an act of God or something caused by nature,” he told reporters. The train, Special Express Train No. 21, was traveling in Nakhon Ratchasima province, carrying 195 people, when the crane collapsed on it, authorities said. It was about halfway through its voyage between Bangkok and the eastern city of Ubon Ratchathani. At the scene late Wednesday, dozens of workers were still sifting through the wreckage. Nupih Pinta, 56, a resident of the area, said villagers struggled to help the passengers. “It was really difficult because many of

them were trapped,” Nupih said. Some of the passengers who survived walked out on their own, he said, and sat on the side of a dirt road waiting for help. Col. Thatchapon Chinnawongand, the chief of the police station in Sikhio, the district where the accident happened, said the crane fell from a height of around 65 feet. Italian-Thai Development PCL, a company involved in the construction, said in a statement Wednesday that it would take “full responsibility” and “provide full compensation and medical care” to the families of the deceased and the injured. It also said it would support local authorities. The construction project was part of a high-speed train network to China via Laos.

It is backed by China’s Belt and Road Initiative, Thai news media reported. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a news conference, “The Chinese government attaches great importance to the safety of both the project and personnel, and we are also following up on the situation.” She added, “At present, it appears that the relevant section is being constructed by Thai companies, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.” China-backed projects came under scrutiny in Thailand last year, when a building under construction in Bangkok collapsed during an earthquake. ran was expected Wednesday to execute a 26-year-old protester who was sentenced to death just days after his detention, according to human rights groups and family members. President Donald Trump has threatened “strong action” if Iran carries out any such death sentences. As Iran tries to crush anti-regime protests that began more than two weeks ago, the country’s chief justice, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, urged speedy trials and executions of “rioters” — a term officials have used to refer to the protesters — according to a video shared Wednesday by the semiofficial news agency Tasnim. “Those elements who beheaded people in the streets or burned people alive must be tried and punished as quickly as possible,” he said. “If we don’t do it fast, it won’t have the same impact.” The protester slated for execution, identified as Erfan Soltani, would be the first to be put to death during the current wave of antigovernment unrest that began Dec. 28. He was arrested Jan. 8 at his home in an area west of the capital, Tehran, and has been denied access to a lawyer or other means to mount a defense, according to the Norway-based Hengaw Organization for Human Rights. A statement by the group said his family was also kept unaware of the judicial proceedings and was allowed only a brief, final visit before the scheduled execution Wednesday. His family learned just four days after his detention that his execution had been scheduled. On Tuesday, the family said Soltani had never used violence and only sought basic freedoms for Iranians. Since late last month, Iran has been rocked by the largest protests in years against its authoritarian rulers. Trump has made a series of comments pledging support for the protesters and threatening strikes on Iran if its forces kill demonstrators. Late Tuesday, as reports spread of an imminent execution of an Iranian protester, Trump warned of consequences if it went ahead. “We will take very strong action if they do such a thing,” he said in an interview with CBS Evening News. “When they start killing thousands of people, and now you are telling me about hanging, we will see how that works for them. It’s not going to work out good.” Also Wednesday, the U.S. military was

evacuating an unspecified number of nonessential personnel from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar as a precautionary measure, according to two U.S. military officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters. Iran had fired at the facility in June in retaliation for U.S. strikes on several critical nuclear sites. The latest moves have heightened fears of another U.S. strike on Iran in a region already on tenterhooks after multiple wars in the past two years. And senior Iranian officials have responded with threats and vitriol aimed at the United States. “The President of the United States, who repeatedly speaks about the unsuccessful attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, would do better to also mention the Iranian missiles that crushed the U.S. Al Udeid base,” Ali Shamkhani, a senior Iranian official and an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Wednesday in a post on the social platform X. “This would certainly help create a more realistic understanding of Iran’s will and capability to respond to any aggression.” The protest movement was initially fueled by anger over the economy, which has been battered by years of corruption, government mismanagement and crippling Western sanctions. It quickly evolved into a broader antigovernment uprising against the clerical establishment that has ruled since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. More than 2,400 people have been killed so far, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran, or HRANA, a rights organization in Washington. The Norway-based Iran Human Rights said more than 3,400 had been killed and thousands injured. Even government officials have acknowledged as many as 3,000 people dead. But they have put their focus on the security forces who have been killed. The flow of information about the protests has been severely restricted by an internet blackout that has lasted nearly a week, most likely obscuring the true scale and toll of the unrest. Protests usually pick up in the late afternoons and evening, and it was still unclear Wednesday where the latest protests were taking place and how large they were. After the protests began last month, Iranian officials initially struck a conciliatory tone, saying they were open to dialogue with demonstrators. But as the protests spread and people began to call for the downfall of the regime, they hardened their stance, shut down the internet and cracked down with lethal force.

he Santurce Crabbers mounted a five-run rally in the second inning and went on to defeat the Ponce Lions 8-2 on Tuesday night at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Hato Rey to take a 2-0 lead in the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League finals. After a rest day on Wednesday, the best-of-seven series moves to Ponce for three games. Game 3 is slated for 7 p.m. tonight at Francisco “Paquito” Montaner Stadium. Andrew Velázquez starred for Santurce, going 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored, and a walk. Second baseman Shed Long Jr. led off the second inning with a single to right field, and Henry Ramos drew a walk. Brian Navarreto then drove in the Crabbers’ (Cangrejeros’) first run with a single. In the next at-bat, Velázquez laid down a bunt toward the pitcher and beat the throw to first base with his speed, loading the bases. The left-hander earned the win, pitching six innings, allowing two runs, six hits, and striking out four. In the top of the third inning the Lions got on the scoreboard against Rivera with a sacrifice fly by Emmanuel Rivera. Later, in the sixth inning, Rivera hit the ball hard again, launching a solo home run over the left field fence to make it 5-2. Santurce responded in the bottom of the inning with another run on a short hit by Jeremy Arocho off Ponce reliever Noel Pinto, bringing the score to 6-2. Then, in the eighth inning, Velázquez and López hit consecutive doubles before Castro drew a walk. With the bases loaded, Morales hit a ground ball single to third base, driving in two more runs to extend the lead to 8-2. outh Coast Volleyball achieved its first victory of the season on Tuesday night, winning a close fiveset match against the Barceloneta Ninjas in men’s Division B of the Puerto Rican Volleyball Confederation (COPUVO by its acronym in Spanish). The match was held at the Caguas Private School court, where the home team prevailed with scores of

25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 19-25 and 15-13 in a match that went down to the wire in the final set. South Coast’s record is now 1-1 with an accumulated three points in the standings, while the Ninjas also have a 1-1 record, with five points. he 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles are still two long years away — and the 2026 Winter Games in Italy haven’t even started yet. But fans of the Summer Games need to start planning now. They are getting their first shot at purchasing tickets to the 2028 events this week. Prospective ticket buyers could register online at la28.org starting Wednesday. Registering will enter pur-

chasers into a lottery to get access to the first batch of tickets, which will be sold this spring. Organizers say that tickets to all sports will be available at a range of prices, starting at $28. The 2028 Olympics will be Los Angeles’ third time hosting the event, after the Summer Games in 1932 and 1984. Those Summer Games will also be the first hosted in the United States since the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Hundreds of events will stretch across Southern California, and Oklahoma City will also host some, creating

many opportunities for spectators to catch a glimpse of the action. Los Angeles will also host the Paralympic Games, which will begin in August 2028. Here is what to know about attending the 2028 Olympics. Register for the lottery first, then wait for the chance to buy tickets. To get access to the first round of sales, those interested in purchasing tickets for Olympic events must register online and create a profile. Registration, which

The Olympics and Paralympics will include more than 800 events across more than 40 venues, creating plenty of opportunities for fans. The Olympic Games will feature 36 sports and the Paralympic Games will include 23. Ticket prices for these events will range depending on interest in the sport and the venue. LA28, the organizing committee for the Los Angeles Games, expects to offer a total of 14 million tickets to the events. At least 1 million single tickets will be sold for $28, it said, and one-third of overall tickets sold will cost less than $100. Fans will also have the option to secure more expensive hospitality packages with access to private suites. Those packages require deposits that range from $1,000 to $10,000. Events will take place across Southern California — and in Oklahoma. Los Angeles will have its name on signs and merchandise during the Olympics, but athletes will compete at venues all over Los Angeles and Orange counties in California. Many events will take place within Los Angeles city limits, such as baseball at Dodger Stadium, track and field events at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and boxing at Crypto.com Arena. Other events will be hosted in other Southern California cities. For example, Carson will host tennis, archery, rugby and field hockey. Anaheim will host volleyball, and basketball will be played in Inglewood. Surfing events will be held in the waters off Trestles State Beach in San Clemente. The opening ceremony for the 2028 Olympics is scheduled for July 14, 2028. For the first time, the ceremony will be hosted at two venues — the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The closing ceremony is scheduled for July 30 at the Coliseum. The Paralympic Games will begin two weeks later, on Aug. 15, and run through Aug. 27. Is Los Angeles ready to host the Olympics? There is still plenty of work to do before the Games begin. Some key infrastructure projects are behind schedule. The People Mover at the Los Angeles International Airport was once expected to be completed in 2024. But now planners expect the train project, which will connect airport terminals with the rail transit system in Los Angeles, to be ready by the second half of 2026. Other infrastructure plans will need to wait until closer to the Games. The Olympic Village, for example, will mostly be hosted on the campus of UCLA. The school’s semester will need to end before Olympic athletes can move in. Olympics officials have said that they are confident everything needed to host the Games will be in place in time.
