Legislators plan to question Family secretary
By THE STAR STAFF
Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP)
Rep. Denis Márquez Lebrón insisted on Wednesday on the need to declare a state of emergency due to child violence and announced the filing of legislative measures to address the issue, including a resolution to question the secretary of the Family Department.
“Last term, we managed to get the House of Representatives to approve the bill to declare a state of emergency for children, but it stalled in the Senate,” Márquez Lebrón said in a written statement. “The PIP insists that it is necessary to declare a state of emergency because cases of violence against children continue to increase.”
The PIP spokesman in the lower chamber announced that his delegation filed House Bill 1108, which proposes declaring a state of emergency due to child

violence, as well as House Resolution 589, to question the Family secretary regarding the handling of child abuse complaints and the actions taken by the agency.
Márquez Lebrón noted that the legislative measure seeks to demand an immediate response from the state and the mobilization of resources to address cases of violence against minors, in addition to establishing oversight mechanisms for the use of funds and prevention protocols.
due to child violence and announced the filing of legislative measures to address the issue.
“It is essential to question the Secretary of the Department of the Family so that she can account for the number of child abuse complaints and how this situation is being addressed,” he said. “The country needs to know what actions are being taken, how the resources are being used, and what the protocols related to prevention are.”

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón acknowledged on Wednesday that she does not know for certain whether the certification related to tax relief was submitted to the Financial Oversight and Management Board, as required by law within a seven-day period.
“Of course, if it hasn’t already been submitted,” the governor said at a press conference in Salinas. “No, because there was a meeting of AAFAF yesterday, and the fiscal component was discussed with them, so I assume it was submitted, but if it hadn’t been submitted, it would be submitted within the corresponding deadlines. Although I think they already had it.”:
She added that the checks taxpayers will receive will not have a fixed amount, since each person has a different tax liability.
“These aren’t checks for $500, $1,000, or $2,000, right? That’s not how it works,” González Colón said. “Each taxpayer’s tax obligation will depend on how much they earn. If they earn $25,000 or less, if they earn $50,000 or less, if they earn, I think it’s $75,000 or less, $95,000, and so on,” she said. She said that everyone who earns less than $150,000 will receive an automatic check, but the amount will vary
depending on income and applicable deductions.
“How much will it be? It will depend on their income, it will depend on their deductions,” the governor reiterated. “If a person, for example, earned less than $150,000 and previously had three children and had a deduction of $2,500 for each, then they previously had a deduction or could have been receiving a final deduction of $7,500. In this case, with the increase to $5,000, we’re talking about $15,000, just for the dependents.”
González Colón added that scenarios have been modeled with profiles such as nurses, technicians, secretaries, and firefighters, and that sales tax payments on prescription medications and accounts for people with disabilities are also being eliminated.
“Scenarios were created, we can share them again, for nurses earning a certain amount, technicians, secretaries, firefighters, because it will depend on the income,” she said.
The governor said that the fiscal reserves will not be touched and that she expects to repeat the savings generated last year.
“We are not impacting the 5 percent reserves,” she said. “I generated some savings last year that I plan to replicate this year in order to give back to the people what they earn.”

The University of Puerto Rico (UPR), which continues to operate under a significant accumulated deficit despite reducing it by $237 million, filed its audited financial statements for fiscal year (FY) 2025 more than two months ahead of the March 31, 2026 deadline — a rare milestone that the institution says underscores progress toward financial stabilization.
The announcement comes as several university groups continue pressing for the removal of UPR President Zayira Jordán Conde, intensifying scrutiny over the administration’s performance.
UPR submitted the audited reports to the Federal Audit Clearinghouse the same day they were completed, ensuring continued eligibility for federal student aid programs, including the Pell Grant.
Finance Director Laura Ortiz Ramos said it is the first time in more than a decade that the university has completed the audit process so far ahead of schedule, a benchmark not reached since FY 2005.
The statements show UPR reduced its accumulated deficit from $910 million to $673 million by the end of FY 2025. Although the island’s main public university remains in deficit, officials said the sustained decline signals a clear trend toward
financial recovery.
The audit also contains no findings questioning UPR’s ability to continue operations, a reversal from previous years.
Administrators said the absence of such warnings reflects
greater institutional stability.
“This result reflects a structural shift in the way the university manages its financial processes,” Jordán Conde said. “Meeting and exceeding established timelines is a clear sign of responsibility, administrative rigor and commitment to transparency.”

The University of Puerto Rico submitted its audited financial reports to the Federal Audit Clearinghouse the same day they were completed, ensuring continued eligibility for federal student aid programs, including the Pell Grant, officials said.
Puerto Rico Treasury Secretary Ángel Pantoja Rodríguez said his agency worked closely with UPR to provide accounting support. He praised the early filing and the lack of operational‑uncertainty findings, saying the results strengthen the institution’s fiscal credibility.
UPR Vice President of External Resources Ilka C. Ríos Reyes said the timely submission helps reinforce the university’s standing with accrediting and regulatory bodies, while Ortiz Ramos noted that the milestone resulted from coordinated efforts across multiple departments.
The report also points to improvements in auditor contracting, integration of financial data and compliance with Puerto Rico’s public‑sector accounting laws.
UPR officials said the advancement supports the university’s push toward a more modern and efficient administrative model, even as debate over its leadership continues.

Natural Resources and Environmental Resources (DNER)
Secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez announced Wednesday that La Monserrate beach in Luquillo, Javier Calderón Nieves beach in Vega Alta, and Manuel Nolo Morales beach in Dorado would remain closed to the public until further notice due to weather conditions.
“The safety of swimmers, as well as the protection of natural resources, is what guides us at all times,” Quiles said in a written statement. As you know, since last Monday the northern part of the island has experienced strong waves, in some cases reaching up to 21 feet.”
The official noted that the waves, combined with strong
winds, have created unsafe conditions that prevent the proper use of the recreational facilities located on the north coast.
“This, along with the strong winds that have been experienced, has made conditions unsuitable for enjoying our beaches,” he said. “For this reason, since yesterday the La Monserrate, Javier Calderón Nieves, and Manuel Nolo Morales beaches were closed to the public. The same applies today.”
Quiles added that the agency remains in constant communication with the Bureau for Emergency Management and Disaster Administration and with the Public Safety Department to evaluate the evolution of maritime conditions.
The DNER secretary noted that any decision regarding the reopening of the beaches will be announced once safe conditions exist for visitors and for the protection of natural resources.

Puerto Rico police officers rescued 13 abandoned dogs Tuesday night from a home on Dinuba Street in Bayamón’s Santa Juanita neighborhood.
According to the police, an anonymous caller alerted authorities to the situation. When officers arrived, they found
three malnourished dogs tied up in the yard. Those animals were turned over to the Bayamón Municipal Animal Control Unit.
Additional dogs in similar condition were found inside the residence.
Officer Yoliana Díaz, under the supervision of Sgt. Miguel Feliciano of the Bayamón South Precinct, consulted

the recreational facilities located on the north coast.
with prosecutor Lorna Colón, who advised them to request a search warrant. Judge Jaileen González later authorized the warrant.
Emergency Management personnel and Elvis Reyes, the municipality’s coordinator of Animal Protection and Control, assisted officers in executing the order. In total, 13 dogs were rescued and taken to a temporary municipal shelter for and treatment. The police urged anyone with information that could help solve the case to call 787 343 2020, or contact them via X (formerly Twitter) at @PRPDNoticias or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/prpdgov.

After 10 years as one of Santurce’s most influential culinary incubators, Lote 23
LLC announced the closure of its physical operations, namely a popular food park in the downtown San Juan sector, marking the end of a project widely credited with transforming the local gastronomic and small‑business landscape.
Cristina Sumaza, executive director of Lote 23 LLC and co‑creator of the concept, confirmed the shutdown in a written statement.
“Lote 23 was born with a clear mission: to create real opportunities for small food businesses and support them during a crucial stage of their development,” Sumaza said. “This is not a goodbye; it is the culmination of a mission accomplished. Although the food park closes its physical doors, the legacy of Lote 23 will remain alive in the companies that grew from this space and continue contributing to Puerto Rico’s gastronomic and entrepreneurial landscape.”
Sumaza attributed the decision to close to “structural changes and the current economic reality,” noting that rising operational costs and a broader economic contraction have placed disproportionate pressure on small businesses, making the continuation of the model unviable.
Since opening in 2016, Lote 23 had become one of Puerto Rico’s most significant platforms for culinary incubation, hosting more than 90 small gastronomic businesses over the past decade. Many of the food concepts that debuted in the park later evolved into fully

established restaurants, pop‑ups, or mobile businesses across the island.
The project quickly distinguished itself as a “real‑world learning laboratory,” providing entrepreneurs with affordable space to test menus, refine business models, and build client bases. Its mix of kiosks, food stalls, and creative culinary concepts created a steady stream of visitors locals, tourists and food‑industry followers alike.
Beyond food, Lote 23 played an important role in the economic and cultural revitaliza tion of Santurce, a district that has become synonymous with arts, entrepreneurship and
urban renewal.
Lote 23 was developed by siblings Cristina and Fernando Sumaza, transforming an aban doned lot in Santurce into a vibrant culinary hub. When the project launched, it featured 14 kiosks and two Airstream trailers serving a wide variety of cuisines from pernil (roast pork shoulder or leg) and tacos to donuts, burgers and specialty coffee.
The park was also closely tied to Sumaza’s broader vision for economic development. Before returning to Puerto Rico to develop projects including Lote 23, she co‑founded ConPRmetidos, a nonprofit focused on ad dressing the island’s economic challenges and stemming the ongoing “brain drain.”
In 2021, Lote 23 formally became the testing laboratory for the Jump All In! culinary business development program, a structured incubator designed to support early‑stage food entrepreneurs. The program has supported more than 120 culinary businesses, giving participants access to mentorship, financial guidance, and a real‑world operating environment.
According to the company, the partner ship between Lote 23 and Jump All In! was critical in fostering community, collaboration and sustainable business practices.
The announcement of Lote 23’s closure comes amid a difficult economic environ ment for small businesses across Puerto Rico. High energy costs, inflation and the region’s broader economic stagnation have forced many entrepreneurs to reassess the viability of brick‑and‑mortar operations. Sumaza empha sized that those pressures made the continuation
of Lote 23’s original model impossible.
Popular Democratic Party Senator Ada Álvarez Conde reacted on Wednesday to the announcement of the Lote 23 closure.
“Unfortunately, this closure, according to its spokesperson, is due to structural changes and the current economic reality, including high operating costs and a contraction that particularly affects small businesses, making the continuation of the operating model in its current form unfeasible,” the at large senator stated.
“This is yet another indication of the challenges facing the current administration, where high energy costs continue to stifle the business community in Puerto Rico,” Álvarez Conde said. “As an entrepreneur my entire life, and now as a senator, my commitment is to all those new business owners who are starting out, as well as those who daily face the lack of support for their businesses.”
The senator added that from the Legis lature she will introduce and support specific measures to promote economic development from the perspective of small and midsize businesses (SMEs).
“SMEs represent approximately 95% of businesses in Puerto Rico, constituting the main engine of the local economy by gener ating around 44.6% of jobs and contributing significantly to the gross domestic product,” she said.”We must support local entrepreneurs.”
According to data from the Department of Economic Development and Commerce, the SME sector includes small businesses with an nual sales of less than $3 million and fewer than 25 employees, reporting substantial payrolls.

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón an nounced Wednesday that the mod ernization of the Camp Santiago Joint Training Center in Salinas is continuing with a federal investment of $300 million currently underway, as part of the program to reconstruct and modernize military facilities in Puerto Rico.
“This investment not only strengthens our security but also boosts economic devel opment and demonstrates our commitment to the future of the island,” González Colón said in a written statement.
The governor noted that the work is part of a total federal allocation of $500 million
secured during her tenure as resident commis sioner in Washington, aimed at reconstructing military facilities severely impacted by hurri canes Irma and Maria, of which $300 million is currently being implemented.
“The transformation of Camp Santiago is a testament to our commitment to our soldiers and to the security of Puerto Rico and the Na tion,” said Puerto Rico National Guard Adjt. Gen. Carlos Rivera Román. “By the summer of 2027, Camp Santiago will have over 29 new state of the art structures, consolidating its position as the main training center in the Americas. We are building the facilities that our troops deserve.”
The project, announced in February 2023, constitutes the largest construction
project in the history of the Puerto Rico Na tional Guard and includes 29 new buildings, with nearly 300,000 square feet of facilities for companies, battalions, brigades, main tenance, and operational infrastructure, in addition to two dining halls with a capacity for 200 people each and accommodations with 948 beds.
According to released data, the con struction phase is generating some 400 direct jobs and 200 indirect jobs, in addition to an estimated contribution of $7.9 million in state taxes and $700,000 in municipal taxes.
Rivera Román added that the long term lease agreement guarantees the operational readiness of the National Guard and the capac ity to respond to state and federal emergencies.

But even though the president endorsed the deal, which he reached with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., conservative Republicans who were dissatisfied with the concessions it included nearly thwarted it in the House.
Speaker Mike Johnson struggled until the last moment to muster the votes to bring it up Tuesday, haggling with an animated group of hard-line holdouts on the House floor for nearly an hour before he managed to cobble together a bare majority. Such messy and drawn-out scenes have become routine in the chamber, where Johnson is working with a razor-thin majority.
“I share the frustrations of many that the Senate altered our deal at the last minute,” said Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., chair of the Appropriations Committee. “But our obligation is not to those emotions — it’s to the American people.”
30, the end of the fiscal year. Those include the Treasury, Education, Labor and State Departments and the Pentagon.
The package rejects the deep spending cuts the Trump administration had requested, but overall provides small across-the-board trims to many federal agencies.
With the immediate funding crunch over, lawmakers must now turn their attention to what promises to be a remarkably difficult negotiation to unlock longer-term funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
Senate Democrats last week presented a set of demands that would need to accompany any more money for the department that included a prohibition on federal officers wearing masks and a requirement that federal agents wear body cameras and carry identification. Their proposal also would put an end to roving patrols and require warrants issued by a judge for arrests and searches.

Apartial government shutdown ended earlier this week as President Donald Trump signed a spending package to reopen major parts of the government as well as fund the Department of Homeland Security during his negotiations with Democrats over restrictions on the administration’s immigration crackdown.
The package passed the House on a bipartisan 217-214 vote, and lawmakers from both chambers gathered in the Oval Office to

applaud the shutdown’s end. But under the deal, the money for DHS lasts just through the end of next week.
The vote in the House capped an extraordinary spending fight that erupted 11 days ago, when the fatal shooting of an American citizen by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis torpedoed what had been a bipartisan deal to keep federal funding flowing and touched off a fevered round of negotiations. Senate Democrats demanded that any new homeland security money be tied to limits on Trump’s deportation campaign.
While the package brings the current partial shutdown to a close, its passage created another funding cliff for Trump and congressional leaders, who now have roughly 10 days to strike a deal imposing new restrictions on immigration agents. If they fail, regular funding for the Department of Homeland Security would lapse.
Democrats and Republicans are still far apart on the changes they are willing to agree to, and key Democrats have said they would not vote for another stopgap measure if a deal is not reached at the end of next week.
Most Democrats, 193 of them, voted against the spending deal Tuesday, a reflection of how toxic funding the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement has become in the party. Twenty-one supported it.

“I will not stand by and give any more money to Stephen Miller and Kristi Noem to bankroll an out-of-control operation that is terrorizing communities and shredding the Constitution,” said Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., naming the president’s senior adviser and architect of his hard-line immigration policies and the homeland security secretary. “I am not interested in business as usual. Not for two more weeks; not for two more seconds.”
Twenty-one Republicans opposed the measure.
In addition to the stopgap measure to fund the Department of Homeland Security for 10 additional days to leave time for bipartisan talks over new immigration enforcement restrictions, the legislation also would fund major parts of the government through Sept.
Democrats have also demanded that federal agents be subject to the same use-offorce policies that apply to local and state law enforcement agencies, which require those involved in violent incidents to be subject to independent investigations if they are accused of wrongdoing.
“Absent bold and meaningful change, there is no credible path forward with respect to the Department of Homeland Security funding bill” on Feb. 13, when funding is set to lapse, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the Democratic leader, said in a statement after the vote. Jeffries was among the Democrats opposing the spending package Tuesday.
Trump administration officials, eager to tamp down on at least some of the public outrage that bubbled up after federal agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens in less than a month, have already agreed to some changes. Noem said Monday that all immigration officers on the ground in Minneapolis would be equipped with body cameras and would be expanded nationwide “as funding is available.”
But agreement on other changes appears more elusive. Minutes after Trump signed the spending deal into law in a ceremony in the Oval Office, a defiant Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., essentially suggested that his party was in no mood to negotiate, telling the president to “stick to your guns.”
Democrats “do have some good ideas, I think, but I’ve got a better idea: It’s your idea,” Graham said, addressing Trump. “End sanctuary cities.”
He and other Republicans have said any enforcement changes must start by forcing states and municipalities to drop their policies against cooperating with federal immigration authorities.

Tom Homan, the White House border czar, said Wednesday that the federal government would immediately withdraw 700 law enforcement officers from Minneapolis, scaling down the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in the area.
The change came after the Trump administration sent thousands of federal officers and agents to Minnesota, a deployment that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said was the agency’s “largest operation to date.” About 2,000 officers and agents would be left in the state, Homan said.
Homan said that federal officials in Minnesota had made significant progress working with state and local officials, despite some differences. An “unprecedented number of counties” were cooperating with federal officials and allowing ICE to take custody of unauthorized immigrants before they are released from jails, he added, though it was unclear what policy changes might have been agreed to by the counties.
The cooperation, Homan said, had provided a “safer environment” for immigration officers to conduct arrests, allowing for fewer officers in the region.
“This is smart law enforcement, not less law enforcement,” he added.
State and local officials said the drawdown was welcome but did not go far enough. Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis, a Democrat, said in a statement that the reduction in officers was “a step in the right direction” but that 2,000 federal officers in the region was still “not de-escalation.”
“My message to the White House has been consistent — Operation Metro Surge has been catastrophic for our businesses and residents,” he said, referring to the name of the federal crackdown in the city. “It needs to end immediately.”
The message was echoed by Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, also a Democrat, in a statement.
“Today’s announcement is a step in the right direction, but we need a faster and larger drawdown of forces, state-led investigations into the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, and an end to this campaign of retribution,” Walz said, referring to two protesters who were killed in encounters with federal immigration officers.
President Donald Trump tasked Homan with taking over the enforcement operation in Minnesota last week, days after Pretti, a U.S. citizen and an intensive care nurse, was fatally
shot by officers with Customs and Border Protection. Pretti’s killing worsened tensions in the region and prompted some Republicans to criticize the Trump administration’s operations. His death came more than two weeks after Good was shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis.
Shortly after the shootings, Department of Homeland Security officials said that federal officers acted in self-defense in both cases, and that Pretti and Good intended to harm law enforcement officials. Those accounts have conflicted with local officials and witness videos.
As snow began to fall outside the B.H. Whipple Federal Building just outside Minneapolis on Wednesday, a small contingent of protesters, who have maintained a daily presence outside the building for weeks, listened to Homan’s remarks on radios.
James Woehrle, 78, said he was not impressed by the number included in the drawdown. “We’re already overwhelmed,” he said. “Seven hundred? I don’t know if you’d even know the difference.”
Homan emphasized that immigration officers would focus on more targeted enforcement operations that prioritized arresting criminals who posed public safety threats. Last week, Homan said that was “the way we’ve always done it,” but that “we got away from it a little bit.”
Still, he said that any immigrants residing in the country illegally would not be exempt from enforcement operations and that Trump was still committed to his mass deportation agenda.
“If you are in the country illegally, you are not off the table,” Homan said.
The administration also decided last week to move Gregory Bovino, a top Border Patrol official whose enforcement tactics have drawn controversy, out of the Minneapolis region.
Homan said Wednesday that there would also be a reorganization of law enforcement officers on the ground. Agents from CBP and ICE would now be under “one unified chain of command.”
Homan did not provide a timeline for the full drawdown of the operation, saying that it was dependent on the continued cooperation of local and state officials, along with a decrease in the violence and rhetoric aimed at immigration officers.
“I’ve been saying this for almost a year now: Hateful or extreme rhetoric against ICE personnel is completely unacceptable,” Homan said. “If the hateful rhetoric didn’t stop, I was afraid there would be bloodshed, and there has been.”

Gavin Newsom has a memoir coming out this month, “Young Man in a Hurry” — another heavy hint that he intends to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. To judge by some of the more fawning media profiles (Vogue describes him as “lithe, ardent, energetic, a glimmer of optimism in his eye; Kennedy-esque”), he’s practically already won.
Democrats should be careful whom they crush on. Newsom’s record as governor of California is a Republican strategist’s perfect foil. Among the more salient points: Affordability. That’s supposed to be the Democrats’ magic word against Republicans amid persistently high prices, especially for first-time homebuyers. Yet U.S. News & World Report ranked California dead last in 2025 in its affordability rankings. The California Legislature’s own Analyst’s Office noted that “Prices for mid-tier homes are about $755,000 — more than twice as expensive as the typical mid-tier U.S. home.” And in 16 California counties, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Alameda, a six-figure salary can still be deemed “low-income” for a family of three, according to the state’s housing department.
Poverty and income inequality. The U.S. Census Bureau reported last year that California is tied with Louisiana for the country’s highest “supplemental” poverty rate, which takes account of cost-of-living calculations over a three-year period, with roughly 1 in 6 Californians living in poverty. In Pennsylvania, by contrast, the number is about 1 in 10. California also has one of the country’s highest rates of income inequality: In 2022, the average income of the top 5% was nearly $600,000 higher than the average income of the bottom 20%.
Homelessness. Nearly 1 in 200 Californians were homeless on any given night in 2024. “California alone accounted for 44% of all individuals who experienced chronic homelessness in the country,” according to a 2024 report from the U.S. De -

Horario: Lunes a Viernes | 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
partment of Housing and Urban Development.
Flight. Probably the best measure of a state’s success or failure is how people vote with their feet. Between April 2020 and July 2025, California had a total net loss of almost 1.3 million people who moved to other states — driven out, according to Coastal Moving Services, by housing prices that “often exceed national averages by double, while the state carries the nation’s highest income tax rate at 12.3%. Slow job growth and 441 businesses relocating headquarters since 2018 compound the challenge.”
Last year, the National Taxpayers Union Foundation found that another Californian leaves the state every minute and 44 seconds, the fastest rate in the nation.
Education. To its credit, the University of California system remains one of the jewels of American higher education. K-12? Not so much. U.S. News ranks California 38th in the country, behind Mississippi and Louisiana. Cal Matters found that while the state had increased “per pupil spending by 102% since 2013, reading comprehension has remained flat while math skills have dropped.”
Energy costs. Americans hate high energy prices. In 2024, the average retail price for electricity in California was 27 cents per kilowatt-hour, more than twice the national average. Regular gas? A gallon in California this week averaged $4.37, higher than in every state other than Hawaii. That has something to do with California having the highest gas tax in the country — about 71 cents a gallon. It also has to do with the regulatory burden Newsom has imposed on its energy suppliers, potentially leading to the loss of 20% of its refining capacity in a single year.
Crime. Newsom bristles at what he calls the “complete mythology” that he is soft on crime. And it’s true that homicide rates in the state fell to historic lows last year — as they did nationwide.
But Newsom was also an enthusiastic backer of Proposition 47, passed in 2014, which reclassified shoplifting offenses under $950 from felonies to misdemeanors, and also reduced charges for lower-level drug possession. Result: “Driven by larcenies, property crime jumped after Prop 47 compared to the nation and comparison states,” according to the Public Policy Institute of California. Newsom also opposed a 2024 ballot measure, Proposition 36, that reversed much of Prop 47. It passed anyway — with 68% of the vote.
Wokeness. Newsom understands that Democrats’ obsession with progressive social justice causes, and the censorious spirit that goes with it, hurt the party in 2024, which is why he has gone out of his way to engage with right-wing influencers on his podcast, “This Is Gavin Newsom.” Last year, he made waves when he seemed to break with progressives on the question of trans athletes, calling the participation of male-assigned competitors in women’s and girls’ sports “deeply unfair.”
Then again, Newsom signed SB132, the law that allowed an inmate who was assigned male at birth and serving 25 years to life for violent offenses, Tremaine Carroll, to transfer

in Philadelphia, Pa., Sept. 10, 2024. (Damon Winter/The New York Times)
to a women’s prison, in which Carroll is alleged to have raped two female inmates. Newsom signed another bill that forbids educators from being required to tell parents that their children have changed their names and pronouns. That won’t be easy to defend in a general election where the race will hang on tens of thousands of votes in states such as Georgia, Michigan and North Carolina.
As the early swooning over Newsom suggests, some voters’ hearts are fluttering over the prospect of his candidacy. Democrats who take the 2028 stakes seriously should stick to just using their brains.

Chuck Negron, a founding member of the pop-rock juggernaut Three Dog Night who was known for his walrus mustache, playboy swagger and ringing tenor voice, which fueled indelible early 1970s singles like “One” and “Joy to the World,” died Monday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 83.
His publicist announced the death in a statement, which said that Negron had long been treated for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and that he had been diagnosed with heart failure in his final months.

A clean-cut scholarship basketball player turned paragon of rock ’n’ roll excess, including heroin addiction, Negron was one of three gifted vocalists who, along with Danny Hutton and Cory Wells, formed one of the entertainment world’s most bankable acts from 1969 to 1975.
Blending the dreamy sounds of 1960s San Francisco and the pop sheen of 1970s Los Angeles, where the group formed, Three Dog Night turned out 21 Billboard Top 40 singles, including 11 in the Top 10.
Negron sang lead on several, including the group’s 1969 cover of Harry Nilsson’s plaintive ballad “One,” which climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

One of the band’s most enduring songs, Hoyt Axton’s “Joy to the World,” was an anthem that sounded like a kid-friendly riff on the Beatles majestic “All You Need Is Love,” complete with daffy lyrics about a winequaffing bullfrog named Jeremiah.
Negron’s bandmates’ initially rejected “Joy to the World,” but he argued that the group needed a “silly song” to keep success rolling. His instincts proved correct, as the track shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971. That same year, his jaunty vocals on Paul Williams’ “An Old Fashioned Love Song” helped propel that song to No. 4.

Flouting the standard practice of top acts in that singer-songwriter-dominated era, Three Dog Night did not compose the bulk of its material. The lack of original pieces brought critical barbs, even unwelcome comparisons to the Monkees, the 1960s group that had been manufactured for TV. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice called Three Dog Night as “slick as Wesson Oil” and the “Kings of Oversing.”
Still, during the band’s heyday, its influence was undeniable. Its members were starmakers — or “discoverers,” as rock journalist Ben Fong-Torres deemed Three Dog Night in Rolling Stone in 1972 — simply by covering tunes by up-and-coming artists, including Nilsson, Randy Newman, Laura Nyro and even Elton John, who gave the group first crack at “Your Song.”
As a full-fledged rock star, Negron embraced the expectation of living the high life — in all its definitions. He indulged in women, cars, houses, private jets and drugs, all of which came as a package deal back then.
“When we’d come off the road, they’d lock us in the studio with guards at the door not letting us out, masseuses coming in, etc. What a life, right? But this worked us to death,”
Charles Negron II was born on June 8, 1942, to Charles Negron, a Puerto Rican nightclub performer, and Elizabeth (Rooke) Negron. Chuck spent much of his childhood in an orphanage in New York City’s Bronx borough after his mother could no longer care for him. It was there that he first dabbled in performance, trying out for choirs and eventually finding his voice with street groups in the South Bronx.
“When the doo-wop groups would sing on the corner, I’d join in from a distance,” Negron told Forbes. “Finally, they asked me to come over and sing with them. So I knew others liked what I did.”
He also turned heads as a 6-foot-1 high school basketball standout, winning scholarship offers. Hoping to continue hooping while pursuing a music career, he landed at Allan Hancock College, a community college in Santa Maria, California, that was at least in driving distance of Hollywood.
Negron shrunk that distance considerably when he transferred to California State College at Los Angeles (now California State University, Los Angeles), where he played for coach Bill Sharman, a former guard for the Boston Celtics who would later coach the Los Angeles Lakers.
Negron met Hutton at a party and, with Wells, formed Three Dog Night in 1967. They adopted the band’s unusual name from a custom, sometimes attributed to Indigenous Australians, of sleeping with dogs for warmth. (A three-dog night is an especially cold one.)
The band splintered in 1976, and Negron sank further into the abyss, in large part because of heroin addiction. His millions in savings vanished and, before long, he was living in a Skid Row drug den in Los Angeles. The police often raided crack dealer neighbors but “never bothered us,” he recalled in a 1998 interview with The Las Vegas Sun. “That’s how pathetic we were.”
He hit a particular low one day when he was zonked out on a curb and noticed people gawking. “It’s really embarrassing,” he remembered telling a companion next to him, “these people want an autograph.”
“Chuck, you just peed in the street,” the friend responded. “They don’t know who you are.”
Three Dog Night reunited in 1982 but broke up after another Negron relapse, leaving his bandmates to carry on for years under the group’s banner.
After 35 trips to rehab attempts in 13 years, Negron said he finally got clean in 1991, leading to an attempt to rekindle things with his bandmates. “They kind of went, ‘Get screwed,’” he told The Sun, “so I went, ‘OK, some things are too late — move on.’”
His survivors include his fourth wife, Ami Albea Negron, whom he married in 2020; four children, Shaunti Negron Levick, Charles Negron III, Charlotte Negron and Annabelle Negron; nine grandchildren, and a stepson, Berry Duane Oakley, the son of Allman Brothers bassist Berry Oakley, who died in 1972.
Wells died in 2015, but Negron and Hutton finally reconciled last year after decades of estrangement, according to the statement from his publicist.
Negron embarked on a solo career. In later years, as heart issues made singing more difficult, he performed with eyeglasses that fed oxygen into his nose through small tubes designed to look like guitar cables.
“People aren’t going to pay to see someone singing with an oxygen mask on, so I had to do something or it was all going to be over,” he told Rock Cellar, describing the device. “The audience can’t even tell. It changed my entire career.”
U.S. stocks dropped on Wednesday, with losses in Advanced Micro Devices, Palantir and other technology companies, as investors worried about pricey valuations and whether Wall Street’s AI rally has reached its peak.
Alphabet (GOOGL.O), fell 2.3% ahead of its quarterly results after the bell, which will give investors a fresh glimpse of how much the Google-owner’s massive investments in AI are contributing to its top-line sales growth.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O), tumbled 16% after the chipmaker forecast quarterly revenue that disappointed investors and suggested it is having a tough time competing against AI heavyweight Nvidia (NVDA.O).
Nvidia dropped 3.7%, and the PHLX semiconductor index (.SOX), lost 5.4%.
Palantir (PLTR.O), slumped 13%, reversing sharp gains from the previous day that were driven by the AI data company’s strong quarterly sales.
“The size of the infrastructure buildout is unprecedented, and the pace of consumers and businesses adopting AI tools is also unprecedented. The stock market is having a really hard knowing where to price the stocks and what the future looks like. ... The market is suddenly skeptical and concerned about it,” said Jed Ellerbroek, a portfolio manager at Argent Capital in St. Louis.
Some software companies added to recent losses amid worries that rapidly advancing AI could disrupt industry incumbents. Snowflake fell 7% while Datadog (DDOG.O), lost 4.5%.
“If you’ve got legacy software that’s old and clunky, you’re a ripe target for AI. We’re a bit bearish on software in general, with the whole impetus of AI,” said Josh Chastant, Portfolio Manager, public investments at GuideStone Funds.
Investors selling AI-related stocks shifted into less pricey companies that sat out the tech rally in recent years. The S&P 500 value index (.IVX), gained 0.75% and was on track for its fifth consecutive session of advances. The S&P 500 growth index (.IGX), dropped 2.30%.
MOST ASSERTIVE STOCKS

The S&P 500 was down 0.64% at 6,873.72 points.
The Nasdaq declined 1.74% to 22,851.82 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.18% at 49,328.36 points.
Even as the S&P 500 fell, six out of 11 of its sector indexes rose, led by real estate (.SPLRCR), up 1.74%, followed by a 1.57% gain in energy (.SPNY).

PUERTO RICO STOCKS COMMODITIES

Additionally, advancing issues outnumbered falling ones within the S&P 500 (.AD.SPX), by a 2.4-to-one ratio.
Super Micro Computer’s (SMCI.O), shares jumped 9% after the company raised its annual revenue forecast on sustained demand for its AI-optimized servers as companies ramp up data-center capacity.
Shares of the drugmaker Eli Lilly (LLY.N), rallied 10% after the company forecast 2026 profit above Wall Street expectations.

Khrystyna Yurchenko worked hard to build a life in the eastern Ukrainian region known as the Donbas, where she pours her energy into the popular dance studio she owns.
But she would give it all up, she said, for lasting peace. Yurchenko is among a growing number of Ukrainians who say they would hand over the part of the Donbas still controlled by Ukraine to Russia if that would end the war.
This represents a notable shift for a warweary Ukrainian population. Giving up territory that Russia has been unable to capture has long been considered a red line. But what once seemed impossible now appears less so, as the Kremlin insists that U.S.-backed peace negotiations will advance only if Ukraine agrees to walk away from the Donbas.
“For me, peace is the priority, and if there would definitely be no war after we give away the Donbas, I would be ready to leave,” she said. She would support surrendering the territory, she said, only if Ukraine’s allies offered strong guarantees for the country’s postwar security.

The future of the Donbas is among the thorniest issues as Ukraine, Russia and the United States continue talks in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, on Wednesday.
Ukraine has spent years fortifying cities in the Donbas, and has lost a huge number of soldiers defending the industrial region. The territory covers parts of several regions, including Donetsk and Luhansk. Ukraine still holds about 20% of Donetsk but has lost all of Luhansk.
For Russia, capturing the Donbas, where Moscow has lost many more soldiers than Ukraine has, could allow it to claim some measure of victory even as it has fallen far short of its goal of subjugating all of Ukraine.
In public statements, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine remains opposed to a unilateral withdrawal from the Donbas. But he has also occasionally hinted at flexibility, saying that Russia and Ukraine must be prepared to compromise as Ukraine comes under pressure on the battlefield and at the negotiating table.
Polling reflects a growing openness to territorial concessions.

In May 2022, two months after Ukrainian forces repelled the Russian army around the capital, Kyiv, a poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology found that 82% of Ukrainians believed that the country should not surrender territory under any circumstances.
In the institute’s most recent survey, published Monday, 40% of respondents said they would support giving up the Donbas in exchange for security guarantees.
The two figures are not directly comparable, because earlier polls did not attach security guarantees to the question about ceding territory. But the finding tracked with other survey data showing a rising acceptance of territorial concessions.
Still, a majority of Ukrainians remain opposed. Many say they are prepared to continue enduring hardships, including Russia’s campaign to knock out the country’s energy infrastructure during a bitterly cold winter.
Relinquishing the Donbas could fracture Ukrainian society, analysts said. It could also recast the legacy of Zelenskyy from a heroic leader who defended the state to one
who allowed a Russian occupation of Ukrainiancontrolled territory where about 190,000 people now live. Many would presumably move to areas still held by Ukraine rather than live under Russian rule, as Yurchenko said she would.
Zelenskyy “listens to his people, and he won’t do it,” said Yevhen Koliada, head of the Relief Coordination Center, which has helped evacuate thousands of residents from front-line areas, including in the Donbas.
Mykhailo Samus, director of the independent New Geopolitics Research Network in Kyiv, noted that Ukrainian law prohibited ceding territory that had not been occupied by military force.I think this should be higher up. Zelenskyy has often said it’s impossible without a referendum, hasn’t he?
Zelenskyy has proposed that Ukrainian and Russian troops pull back an equal distance from the front line in the Donbas to create a demilitarized zone. While such a compromise could theoretically be considered, Samus said, Putin is pursuing a military path and vowing to take the region either through force or through negotiations.
For those who say they are willing to give up the Donbas, security guarantees are crucial, analysts said. Many people fear that if Ukraine were to withdraw troops without such guarantees, there would be little to stop Russia from regrouping and using the region to launch new attacks into the open lowlands beyond the fortified Donbas cities.
For Ukrainians, the security assurances must mean “a guarantee that there will be no renewed attack, and that partner countries are responsible for ensuring this,” said Oleh Saakian, a political analyst and co-founder of the National Platform for Resilience and Social Cohesion, a think tank.
Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine is ready to sign deals with Europe and the United States on security guarantees. While European nations have vowed to station troops in Ukraine after any ceasefire, it remains unclear whether they would agree to actually fight Russia in defense of Ukraine. In any case, Russia has said it opposes the plan to station Europeans inside Ukraine.
Saakian cautioned that giving up the Donbas might not be enough to get Russia to abandon the war.
“It is a great illusion that reaching an agreement with Russia on some line of demarcation could lead even to a temporary peace,” he said.
Whatever happens, Yurchenko said that peace was the primary objective. However, she, too, said she worried that even a major territorial concession would not be enough to ensure that Russia would not attack again.
“If Ukraine were to give away the Donbas, we would have to move and build our lives from scratch,” she said. “It would be a difficult but worthwhile sacrifice to end the war.”
“But who can guarantee that I would not have to do it again?”

Many feared the worst from Tuesday’s meeting between President Donald Trump and President Gustavo Petro of Colombia, the first face-to-face encounter between two leaders known for speaking their minds.
For a year, the two had been engaged in a war of words and ideology, and Trump has used White House visits to ambush foreign leaders and flex his power. Colombia is also the world’s primary source of cocaine, and Trump has vowed to crush transnational drug trafficking networks, some of which have bases in Colombia.
But after a private meeting that lasted more than two hours, the first images emerged: the two leaders smiling broadly, flanked by top officials; then a photo with a note from Trump saying “I love Colombia” and a signed copy for Petro of “Trump: The Art of the Deal,” with a dedication: “You are great.”
Colombians — from the embassy in Washington to the streets of Bogotá, the capital — seemed to breathe a collective sigh of relief.
“By the blessing of God, the meeting was a complete success! Long live Colombia,” said Oscar Gamboa, a diplomat, in a text message to The New York Times, adding a Colombian flag emoji.
In a news conference after the White House visit, Petro said he had emerged feeling “optimistic and positive,” though he said the Caribbean was now the “eye of the storm” of U.S. foreign policy. (Colombia and Venezuela both have long Caribbean coasts from where some drugs bound for the United States leave.)
Petro’s remarks, at the Colombian Embassy in Washington, revolved around what Petro described as a “difficult” moment for Colombia and Venezuela. He said he had proposed to Trump renewing Colombia’s bond with the United States by jointly cracking down on drug-trafficking groups active on both sides of the Colombian-Venezuelan border and through investing in clean energy that could supply both countries with electricity.
Trump, for his part, said that he had a good meeting

with Petro. When asked if the two had come to any agreement on counternarcotic efforts, Trump told reporters at the White House, “We worked on it, and we got along very well.”
There had been good reason to believe the two presidents could clash Tuesday, experts said. Petro has taken on Trump on everything from deportations to the U.S. military’s boat strikes against what the Trump administration has said are drug traffickers.
U.S. officials revoked Petro’s visa last fall and imposed sanctions on him, along with members of his family and his government. The U.S. government issued Petro a short-term visa for this week’s trip to the capital.
In an interview with a Colombian radio station after the meeting, Petro rated it a “9” on a scale of 1 to 10 and said “not even a second” had been spent discussing the sanctions or his visa issues.
After the meeting, Trump said that in addition to counternarcotics, the two were “working on some other things too, including sanctions.”
It was an unexpected turnaround from the state of affairs just a month ago.
After the U.S. military raid in Venezuela that ousted Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, Trump suggested that Colombia could be the next country he would target.
But the two leaders had an amicable phone call a few days later, arranged by Colombia’s ambassador Daniel García-Peña with the help of Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Trump announced that Petro would be visiting Washington.
On Monday, Trump implied that by removing Maduro, he had cowed Petro into behaving — and taking a more aggressive approach toward armed drug-trafficking groups.
“Somehow, after the Venezuelan raid, he became very nice; he changed his attitude very much,” Trump said of Petro during a question-and-answer session in the Oval Office on Monday.
“We’re going to be talking about drugs,” he said, “because tremendous amounts of drugs come out of his country.”
It was not clear exactly what concrete agreements, if any, had been reached between Trump and Petro.
It is customary for visiting leaders to bring gifts to the White House, and Petro reportedly gave Trump chocolate and coffee made through efforts to supplant the farming of coca — the base ingredient for cocaine — with other products.
On Tuesday, the Colombian government also extradited to the United States an accused high-ranking leader of an organized crime group.
Despite all the rancor on social media over the past year, ultimately “it wasn’t in the interest of the U.S. to be in conflict with its most strategic ally on narcotrafficking,” said Gimena Sánchez, a Colombian human rights activist at the Washington Office on Latin America.
“No matter who has been in charge of both countries,” she said, “that codependency has always been understood.” Petro, who upon leaving the White House was spotted carrying a red MAGA hat, said that he added an S to the cap that Trump gifted him, converting his counterpart’s wellknown slogan into his own: “Make Americas Great Again.”

‘It’s been brutal’:
By LYDIA DePILLIS
or Henry Garnica, a traumatic visit from immigration officials was just the start of the hardest months he’s ever experienced running a business.
On Dec. 11, Garnica was at a meeting when he saw on his security camera feed several suspicious-looking vehicles idling outside the little grocery store he owns in East St. Paul, Minnesota. He called his staff and told employees to lock the doors. When he arrived, more than a dozen officers surrounded him and demanded to see identification.
Garnica, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Colombia, produced his passport. The agents demanded access to the store, where several workers and customers were waiting nervously. They didn’t have a warrant, so he refused, as a helicopter hovered overhead. Neighbors had gathered in support. After about 40 minutes, the officials left.
But in the following weeks, federal officials drove by every day looking for people to detain, Garnica said, terrifying the owners and workers at immigrant-owned businesses up and down the street. Four of his 10 workers have disappeared, too afraid to come to the store. He keeps the door locked, opening it only for the occasional customer. Sales are down 45%, and his savings are dwindling.
“Many small businesses have shut down,” Garnica said. “It’s not good for the economy, it’s not good for families, it’s not good for anybody.”
Operation Metro Surge, nearing its third month in Minnesota, has exacted a heavy toll on commercial corridors populated by Latino-owned businesses such as Garnica’s CentroMex Grocery, as well as Somali and Hmong shops and restaurants.
The damage doesn’t stop there. Although it will take time for official data to arrive, companies across the region have already reported steep declines in revenues. The City of Minneapolis estimates the cost is $20 million each week, and the city’s convention and visitors bureau found that 72% of the employers it surveyed — including hotels, retailers and arts organizations — had experienced canceled, postponed or reduced sales.
One investor in a housing development postponed closing the deal out of concern over the city’s prospects, said Erik Hansen, the city’s director of community planning and economic development.
“It’s been brutal,” Hansen said. “And that is seen not only in free movement in and around the city, but also the business activity that we’re seeing from downtown Minneapolis all the way into the neighborhoods and into the suburban communities.”
The Twin Cities area is experiencing perhaps the most visible economic pain of all the urban centers that have been targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a year of aggressive deportation efforts. But every one of them — from Chicago to Miami — has sustained some harm.
“If there was any correlation between rampant illegal immigration and a good economy, Biden would have had a booming economy,” a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said in response to a request for comment. “Removing these criminals from the streets makes communities safer for business owners and customers.”

Some business leaders who had remained quiet about the immigration crackdown are calling for a different approach.
A hurricane or a recession?
Whenever a region experiences any kind of negative disruption, economists try to understand what the economic impact might look like. Natural disasters like hurricanes are usually thought of as transitory. Economic activity is pushed forward: If you decided against throwing a party or buying a couch while the storm was raging, you’re likely to do it once the sky clears. Also, a bunch of money typically flows from the federal government and insurance companies, seeding a flurry of rebuilding that generates income.
A broader downturn, like the Great Recession of 2008, has longer-lasting effects. That’s partly because there’s less money available in the rest of the economy — government budgets are strapped, and philanthropy is spread thin.
Some consequences of the ICE disturbance in Minneapolis might lift quickly, like a hurricane. Sarah Enrico owns a catering company that employs about 50 people. As federal agents sowed fear across the region, several clients postponed their events, including one for 280 people worth $30,000. Enrico had to cancel dozens of shifts and freeze or donate all the food she had already bought.
Nevertheless, Enrico is hopeful that the events business will come back with a vengeance, as it did after the COVID-19 pandemic eased.
“There’s a very obvious source of the anxiety,” Enrico said. “Even after the pandemic, people were chomping at the bit to have their wedding or do that event or be around people.”
Other damage from the ICE operation will take more time to fix.
Oscar Murcia arrived in St. Paul from El Salvador in 2000, and a few years later started a restaurant and bakery called El Guanaco. He now has four locations, serving mostly Latino customers pupusas and tacos. As ICE activity intensified in December, traffic plunged 80% at the Minneapolis location, so he closed it. He has cut hours and staff at the rest of the stores, and asked his landlords and bankers for relief on rent and loans.
under ICE crackdown
Even if customers come back, Murcia will be missing some of his 64 staff members — four of them were detained, even though he said they had work permits and pending asylum applications.
“It’s going to take a while to grow up again,” he said. “We have to start over with half shift, maybe half employees.”
The Latino Economic Development Center, a nonprofit lender, found that only a fifth of its clients who responded to a survey were operating normally, and half were experiencing “critical” damage. Mercado Central, a hub for Latino businesses, and Karmel Mall, which hosts Somali eateries and shops, have been eerily quiet.
American-born business owners are hurting as well, even if their clientele and workers are less vulnerable to deportation. Lindsey Johnston is a co-owner of Francis Burger Joint, a vegan restaurant with locations on the city’s north and south sides. Every day they hear the whistles and honking horns that follow ICE convoys, and her staff often runs out to join the observers. One day her kitchen manager was pepper-sprayed and detained for six hours before being released without charges, so the restaurant closed.
“It’s haunting. Everyone is exhausted. Everyone is scared,” Johnston said. Promotions the restaurant would normally run to draw customers in January feel inappropriate while nobody wants to celebrate, Johnston said: “There’s lots of people I’ve talked to who are like, ‘Yeah, I spent money yesterday, and I can’t remember the last time I spent money.’”
Looking for help
For some parts of Minneapolis, the crackdown is like salt in an open wound. The civil unrest that erupted after a police officer killed George Floyd in 2020 caused hundreds of millions of dollars in property destruction. A perception of danger depressed activity for years, along with the lingering effects of the pandemic.
During that time, however, the federal government poured resources into communities to keep them afloat — expanded unemployment insurance, forgivable business loans, stimulus checks and direct grants to local governments. None of that appears to be on the way this time.
“The difference there is that the federal government was on our side,” said Alma Flores, executive director of the Latino Economic Development Center. “In this case, I would be shocked if they stepped up and said, ‘We’re going to help you with all of this lost revenue.’”
Minnesota may have more help rebuilding than some places. The Minneapolis Foundation, a nonprofit, has mustered $3.5 million from large companies to help small businesses, and 60 large Minnesota-based companies called for a “de-escalation” of tensions.
Grassroots efforts, such as donated groceries and crowdfunded rent, have been just as powerful. Ingrid Rasmussen is the pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, a stalwart of Minneapolis’ Longfellow neighborhood for more than a century. She spent her entire discretionary budget in the first two weeks of January helping local businesses pay their bills.
“The need is so astronomical,” she said. “We could be collecting funds for the next five years and never meet what we’re experiencing in terms of economic devastation.”

The Cangrejeros of Puerto Rico suffered their second setback on Tuesday night, falling 3-0 to the Charros of Mexico on the third day of the Caribbean Series at Pan American Stadium in Zapopan in the Mexican state of Jalisco.
The Cangrejeros now have a 1-2 record, while the Charros improved to 2-1.
Charros right-hander Luis Fernando Miranda earned the win after almost completely shutting down the Puerto Rican offense, which managed only two of its four hits against him in six innings pitched. He also struck out five batters.
“What can I say? Sometimes you have to acknowledge when you face great pitching, like the kind shown by Mexico Red [the Charros],” Cangrejeros manager Omar López said in a press conference after the game. “We watched their videos, we did our scouting. His numbers are impressive, and sometimes you have to tip your cap to that kind of performance.”
The Charros’ offense, meanwhile, was led by
second baseman Michael Wielansky. Batting third in the lineup, the right-handed hitter went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Charros scored their first run in the first inning against Cangrejeros starter Eduardo Rivera. Billy Hamilton led off with a double to center field and scored on an error by Andrew Velázquez on his throw to first base after fielding a ground ball hit by Wielansky.
In the third inning it was Wielansky again, driving in the second run of the game with a double. In the previous at-bat, Julián Ornelas had reached first base with a line drive to left field and subsequently stole second base.
The Ornelas-Wielansky duo wreaked havoc again in the fifth. Ornelas led off with the Charros’ third double of the game, and Wielansky drove him in with a single to extend the home team’s lead to 3-0.
The loss went to Rivera after he allowed the Charros’ first two runs in his three and two-thirds innings pitched. The left-hander walked four batters and struck out five. Right-hander Trevor Clifton earned the save for the Charros.

The Puerto Rican Volleyball Federation announced the Bulletin No. 2 All-Star Team in the third week of the 2026 Women’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSF by its initials in Spanish) season on Wednesday, with Mexican
import Andrea Rangel earning the Player of the Week distinction and repeating as Best Opposite Hitter, reaffirming her impact on the Cangrejeras of Santurce offense.
Santurce ruled the week in the offensive and setting categories, while Juncos and Ponce stood out in net defense and at the libero position.

• Player of the Week: Andrea Rangel (Santurce)
Her offensive production and consistency in key moments placed her at the center of attention once again.
For the week, Rangel accumulated 42 points in two matches, playing over nine sets for an average of 4.66 points per set. Her team won twice: in five sets against the Atenienses of Manatí and in four sets against the Pinkin of Corozal.
The fourth-place Cangrejeras have a 3-0 record with 8 points.
Furthermore, Rangel ranks fourth in attacks, with 48 successful spikes in 12 sets, for an average of 4 per set.
In the scoring department, she is ranked 14th with 55 points, distributed among 48 attacks, 5 blocks, and 2 aces, also in 12 sets, for an average of 4.58 points per set.
• Best Attacker: Karla Santos (Manatí)
The Manatí attacker continues to be a constant threat from the corners.
• Best Blocker: Naya Gross (Valencianas of Juncos)
Her reading of the game and reach at the net were crucial in stopping opposing attacks and helping her team achieve its first victory of the season.
• Best Setter: Wilmarie Rivera (Santurce)
The Puerto Rican setter controlled the pace of the game with precision, passion and vision.
• Best Opposite: Andrea Rangel (Santurce)
Her double appearance in the bulletin underscores her offensive dominance.
• Best Attacker (second mention): Tamara Otene (Santurce)
The New Zealander provided power and stability to the Cangrejeras’ offense.
• Best Blocker (second mention): Abby Akey (Leonas of Ponce)
Her presence at the net was key for her team.
• Best Libero: Yaidaliz Rosado (Juncos)
Her control of passing and defense reinforces her standing as one of the most reliable players in the young season.
