GOOD MORNING

The San Juan Daily Star, the only paper with News Service in English in Puerto Rico, publishes 7 days a week, with a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday edition, along with a Weekend Edition to cover Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Gov’t to launch first phase of water rationing Friday

Facing rapidly declining water levels at the Carraízo reservoir in Trujillo Alto, Gov. Jenniffer González Colón announced on Wednesday the activation of the first phase of Puerto Rico’s Scheduled Interruption Plan, a sweeping measure that will rotate water service across seven municipalities beginning Friday at 6 a.m.

The plan introduces alternating 48‑hour service cycles for communities served by the Carraízo system and the Sergio Cuevas Filtration Plant. Residents in San Juan, Carolina, Juncos, Gurabo, Trujillo Alto, Canóvanas and Loíza will be divided into two zones: Zone 1 will begin with service, while Zone 2 will start with a two‑day interruption. The zones will then switch every 48 hours.

“This is a measure we take with responsibility, after carefully evaluating the current conditions at the Carraízo reservoir along with weather forecasts,” González Colón said, noting that the drought conditions had been anticipated for weeks. “This situa tion is not in our hands. … We have been preparing to respond responsibly.”

Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) Execu tive President Luis R. González Delgado said that the agency was forced to accelerate the plan due to a sharp reduction in extract able water. The system requires at least 80 million gallons per day to maintain stable tank levels, but current extraction hovers near 70 million -- a daily deficit of 10 million gallons.

“This deficit has limited our ability to recover tank levels and maintain stable distribution,” González Delgado said. “Alternating service will allow us to distribute the available water equitably and offer defined service periods to communities.”

Some sectors served by the Cupey Water System have already experienced interruptions due to insufficient storage recovery.

The announcement came during a meeting of the Drought Committee, which included representatives from PRASA, the National Weather Service, numerous government agencies, the Puerto Rico National Guard and several mayors. The government is coordinating with municipalities to deploy water tanker trucks, prioritizing hospitals, elder‑care facilities, and other essential services.

González Colón also instructed the Department of Consumer Affairs, DACO, to monitor and penalize any abusive practices

related to the sale of water or essential goods.

PRASA urged residents to store only the water they need during service periods and to boil water for at least three minutes once service is restored, due to possible turbidity.

The agency also called for strict conservation: avoiding car washing, filling pools, watering gardens or any other nones sential use.

“Every effort counts,” González Delgado emphasized. “Re sponsible use is fundamental to protecting the available supply.”

González Colón appealed to collective responsibility.

“What Puerto Rico needs is unity, cooperation and a sense of responsibility,” she said. “If each citizen does their part, we can minimize the impact of this drought.”

Zone 1 -- which begins with service Friday -- includes extensive sectors of Carolina, Canóvanas, Trujillo Alto, San Juan, Loíza, Gu rabo and Juncos. Zone 2 -- which begins without service -- covers additional communities across the same municipalities, including parts of Carolina’s Metrópolis sector, Río Piedras, Villa Kennedy, Ciudad Jardín, and neighborhoods in Trujillo Alto and Gurabo.

PRASA will continue daily monitoring of reservoir levels, ex traction rates and system behavior. The government urged residents to stay informed through official platforms of the Government of Puerto Rico and PRASA.

nergy Czar Josué Colón Ortiz urged the public on Wednesday to reduce electricity consumption between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., as two units at the Costa Sur power plant in Peñuelas remain out of service.

“Although the expectation is that both Costa Sur #5 and Costa Sur #6 will come online later this afternoon, while these two units remain out of service, the system will lack the necessary reserves to meet today’s peak demand,” Colón Ortiz said in a written statement, noting that reducing consumption during peak demand hours can help minimize the number

of customers who might experience service interruptions.

Unit 5 was taken offline in a coordinated manner at 2:15 a.m. so that Genera Puerto Rico and LUMA Energy could repair points of failure identified at the Costa Sur 230-kilovolt transmission center. Its boiler was to remain lit while the work was being completed. The unit would be able to resynchronize with the electrical grid once the two grid operators completed the repairs, Colón Ortiz noted.

Meanwhile, Genera finished work on Unit 6 and began the startup process, with the expectation of connecting it to the grid later in the afternoon.

Family Dept. to coordinate water delivery to older adults during planned interruptions

The Family Department announced Wednesday that it will coordinate with municipalities and partner organizations to deliver potable water to older adults and licensed care homes affected by the scheduled service interruptions beginning Friday.

Family Secretary Suzanne Roig Fuertes said the agency’s emergency protocols were activat ed to ensure that vulnerable populations receive essential support throughout the disruption.

“The protection of our older adults does not stop during an emergency,” Roig Fuertes said. “Our team is prepared to respond, guide, and channel the necessary resources so that no older

adult is left without something as essential as potable water. We have been present in every previous emergency and will continue to do so whenever necessary.”

The interruption plan will reach seven mu nicipalities, though the information released by the agency did not specify which ones.

Licensed long‑term care homes are required to maintain cisterns or water‑storage systems that allow them to continue operating during service interruptions. Facilities must also activate their emergency plans, maintain reserves of potable water, and report any incidents that arise.

As part of its preparedness guidance, the agency recommended that households store enough water for three to five days, prioritizing

consumption, medication needs and essential hygiene.

Operators who require assistance are instructed to contact their corresponding regional office. In the case of apartments or condominium complexes built specifically for independent older adults, known locally as “égidas,” which are not subject to the agency’s licensing process, support will be coordinated with administrators, municipalities and other entities.

The family secretary noted that older adults living independently as well as family mem bers, neighbors or caregivers may report any need for water, supplies or additional assistance so that deliveries can be arranged.

The island Family Department announced that it will coordinate with municipalities and partner organizations to deliver potable water to older adults and licensed care homes impacted by the scheduled service interruptions beginning Friday.

Sector leader says hospitals, clinics are prepared for drought

Health Services Administrators As sociation of Puerto Rico (CASS by its acronym in Spanish) President Tania Conde Sterling gave assurances on Wednesday that hospitals and other health facilities are prepared to respond to a possible drought declaration and that, as part of their preparedness pro tocols, they have activated their emer gency and operational continuity plans to ensure that medical services continue

to be offered safely and uninterruptedly.

Conde noted that the administration of hospitals and health facilities in Puerto Rico is highly regulated and requires compliance with strict legal, regulatory and operational requirements aimed at protecting the health and safety of patients, particularly during emergency situations.

“We want to send a message of reassurance to the public,” she said.

“We don’t improvise at hospitals; we have manuals of rules, procedures,

and protocols for all types of scenarios based on best practices and regulated by the Department of Health and other regulatory and accrediting entities. All emergencies bring surprises, but now we have a direct line to the Secretary of Health, Dr. Víctor Ramos, and his team. Our facilities are prepared and are activating the established protocols to guarantee the continuity of services.”

The CASS president added that a possible reduction in the water supply represents a significant operational chal

lenge for any hospital institution, which is why hospitals have specific plans to manage the essential resource without compromising patient care.

“The availability of water is essential for the functioning of emergency rooms, operating theaters, intensive care units, dialysis centers, clinical laboratories, in strument sterilization, food preparation, infection control, and hospital hygiene,” Conde said. “That is precisely why these scenarios are part of the emergency plans that each institution keeps updated.”

Rep. Parés Otero calls on fiscal board to declare water emergency

Torres García tells PRASA he’ll go to court over withholding of public info amid water crisis

Rep. Víctor Parés Otero demanded on Wednesday that the Financial Oversight and Management Board declare a water emergency in Puerto Rico in support of the efforts of Gov. Jenniffer González Colón to ad dress the unprecedented drought and rebuild the island’s stormwater infrastructure.

The chairman of the Government Commit tee in the island House of Representatives also requested the oversight board’s immediate access to $300 million to mitigate the effects of the historic drought, including the purchase of cisterns.

“In July of last year (2025), we formally requested that the Oversight Board declare a state of emergency in Puerto Rico due to the problems with the water infrastructure after decades without the necessary maintenance,” the San Juan District 4 lawmaker said in a written statement. “Today, we demand that the Board act. They are not only in Puerto Rico to impose spending restrictions, but also to

ensure that we have the tools to address the needs of our people quickly.”

Parés added that “July was the driest month in the last 128 years,” and said the allocation is necessary for “urgently repairing leaks, purchasing equipment, acquiring cisterns for schools and shelters, transporting drinking water, and even cloud seeding, a measure we are promoting, among other things.”

“Like the electrical infrastructure, the water network in Puerto Rico is obsolete and outdated, failing to meet the needs of the third decade of the 21st century,” he said. “The average age of a pipe on the island is over 73 years, while in the continental states the average does not exceed 12.”

Also on Wednesday, Rep. Domingo Torres García, the Popular Democratic Party alternate minority leader in the House, warned that he will go to court if the Puerto Rico Aqueduct

and Sewer Authority (PRASA) persists in refus ing to hand over public information about the worsening drinking water crisis.

In a letter addressed to PRASA Executive President Luis R. González Delgado, Tor res García rejected the public corporation’s decision not to comply with an information request submitted on July 15. The legislator said the agency’s refusal violates Law No. 141-2019, known as the Transparency and Expedited Procedure for Access to Public Information Act.

“If PRASA continues to ignore a law that recognizes access to public information as a fundamental right of every citizen, we will be forced to take this matter to court,” Torres García said. “The people have the right to know what is happening, what the plans are, and what concrete actions are being taken to address this crisis.”

Governor supports GOP bill correcting Medicare disparities

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón welcomed a new push from Republican members of the U.S. House of Repre sentatives urging the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to correct long‑standing disparities in Medicare Advantage (MA) funding that have left Puerto Rico at a structural disadvantage compared with the states and other territories.

In a letter to HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Rep. Greg Murphy (R N.C.) co‑chair of the House Republican Doctors Caucus led a group of 14 lawmakers in calling on HHS and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to use existing administrative authority to establish, beginning in 2028, a national minimum benchmark set at 70% of the Average Geographic Amount (AGA). That level already applies to the U.S. Virgin Islands, which receives higher MA payments than Puerto Rico.

The letter, signed by House lawmakers including Don Bacon (R Neb.), Gus Bilirakis (R Fla.), Mario Díaz‑Balart (R Fla.), Carlos Giménez (R Fla.), María Elvira Salazar (R Fla.) and Amata Coleman Radewagen (R-American Samoa), marks a significant development in González Colón’s broader effort to secure equi table Medicare Advantage payments for the island’s older adults.

“My administration will continue advancing initiatives to ensure fairer access to health services for the people of Puerto Rico, and those efforts are already producing concrete results,” González Colón said.

She thanked her former colleagues in Congress “for raising their voices in favor of Puerto Rico.”

Murphy emphasized that chronic underfunding “continues to weaken the Medicare Advantage program in Puerto Rico and in other regions of the nation with disproportionately high

those applied in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Exec utive Director Gabriella Boffelli noted that workers in Puerto Rico contribute to Medicare under the same federal payroll tax rules as workers in the states.

“They deserve a payment system that reflects the current reality of Medicare Advantage, not one based on an outdated methodology,” she said.

She added that the proposed administrative fix would strengthen patient access, support providers, improve chronic disease management and bolster long‑term program sustain ability nationwide.

The congressional push follows CMS’s finalization of the 2027 Medicare Advantage Rate Notice earlier this year, which granted Puerto Rico a 4.01% increase higher than the national average of 2.48%. While the adjustment was welcomed by the medical community and the González Colón administration, officials argue that deeper structural reform remains necessary.

Boffelli credited the coordinated work of health providers, patient organizations, private‑sector partners and the Governor’s Multisectoral Health Working Group for keeping the issue at the forefront in Washington.

enrollment.” Bacon added that fixing the system is preferable to maintaining a model that pushes providers and patients to leave the island in search of better‑funded health systems in the states.

Puerto Rico has the highest Medicare Advantage partici pation rate in the United States: more than 670,000 older adults -- about 96% of all Medicare beneficiaries on the island -- rely on MA for their health coverage. Yet benchmark rates remain roughly 41% below the national average and about 20% below

“The significant progress achieved reflects the strength of this broad coalition,” she said, adding that the administration remains committed to collaborating with the Trump administra tion, Congress and all relevant stakeholders to advance practical reforms that strengthen Medicare Advantage for older adults in Puerto Rico and across the United States.

As Medicare Advantage enrollment continues to grow nationwide, Puerto Rico’s experience underscores broader challenges the program may face if its payment methodology is not modernized.

US Energy Dept. awards loan for battery storage project

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy

Dominance Financing has closed a $489.4 million loan to support new battery storage projects in Puerto Rico, an investment federal officials say will help stabilize the island’s fragile electrical grid and reduce long term power costs for residents.

The loan, awarded to Amanecer Puerto Rico LLC, a sub sidiary of Pattern Energy, is expected to generate roughly $312.5 million in electricity cost savings over 25 years, according to DOE estimates. The financing is part of the Trump administra tion’s broader push to strengthen U.S. energy infrastructure and reduce reliance on foreign controlled supply chains.

“This investment will strengthen Puerto Rico’s electric grid, lower electricity costs, support American manufacturing, and provide a pathway for the reliable, dispatchable power needed to deliver affordable, reliable, and secure energy for the people of Puerto Rico,” said Gregory A. Beard, director of the aforementioned DOE office.

Puerto Rico has struggled with chronic outages and prolonged service interruptions for years, with widespread blackouts imposing steep costs on households, businesses and critical facilities. DOE officials said the financing was restructured after a comprehensive review to align with the administration’s priorities of lowering energy costs and bol stering domestic manufacturing.

The loan will fund 220 megawatts of battery energy storage systems in Arecibo and Santa Isabel, using U.S. manufactured battery technology. DOE said the systems will be capable of providing backup electricity for more than 100,000 customers during shortages and could help avoid an estimated 13 million customer interruption hours based on 2025 grid performance.

The project also includes a pathway for future develop ment of natural gas-fired generation intended to improve grid stability and enhance Puerto Rico’s long term energy security.

Since 2025, the DOE has issued and renewed emer gency orders under Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act to authorize critical generation needed to maintain reliable service on the island. The agency has also supported vegetation

management and transmission maintenance ahead of peak demand periods and hurricane season.

DOE officials said the new financing complements those emergency actions.

An appeals court earlier this week handed a victory to a group of federal grant recipients that the Trump administration has prevented from spending billions of dollars in climate funding for over a year.

In a split decision, 10 judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld an earlier injunction that said the Environmental Protection Agency could not terminate $20 billion in climate grants, and that the recipients should have access to the funds as their case proceeds.

If the EPA does not appeal the decision to the Supreme Court in the next seven days, the judgment will effectively reinstate much of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, a Bidenera “green bank” initiative that supports low-cost loans and investments for renewable energy projects across the country.

Brigit Hirsch, an EPA spokesperson, said the agency is reviewing the judgment and considering next steps. It could appeal to the high court and ask that the funds remain frozen in the meantime.

“It’s screamingly good news for the plaintiffs,” said Michael Gerrard, director of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University, though he said the legal process could continue to drag on for a long time.

In February 2025, the EPA administrator, Lee Zeldin, attempted to claw back $20 billion in climate grant funding that the Biden administration had awarded to eight nonprofit groups. Zeldin suggested the program was vulnerable to waste, fraud and abuse, citing a hidden-camera video released by the

right-wing group Project Veritas in which a former EPA staff member likened the outgoing administration’s spending to throwing “gold bars” off the Titanic.

Despite investigations by the agency’s inspector general, the Justice Department and the FBI, the government never substantiated these claims. Several of the nonprofits sued to force the money out, and in April 2025, U.S. District Judge

(Eric Lee/The New York Times)

Tanya Chutkan of the District of Columbia issued a preliminary injunction preventing the EPA from canceling the grants and allowing the groups to access the money during the litigation. But the EPA appealed that decision, and the program has been in limbo since.

“The practical effect of this is to eliminate that deep freeze,” said David A. Super, a professor at Georgetown Law.

The delay has taken a toll on the grant recipients, which relied on the funds for basic expenses like payroll and office rent. Beth Bafford, the CEO of the lead plaintiff, Climate United, left the organization in March and was not replaced. Other groups have laid workers off. Power Forward Communities, which received $2 billion in grants, was down to two employees earlier this year.

On Tuesday, the nonprofit plaintiffs celebrated the judgment. Representatives for Justice Climate Fund and the Coalition for Green Capital said they were looking forward to moving forward with their work.

“Today, the D.C. Circuit Court judges affirmed what we have always known: EPA took actions to unlawfully freeze and dismantle the National Clean Investment Fund grant program,” Climate United said in a statement. “Despite efforts to harm the awardees with false allegations and misinformation, there remains no legal basis for terminating our grant award and clawing back funds that were already disbursed in our bank accounts.” If the EPA does not appeal to the Supreme Court, the case will proceed in federal court, either moving to trial or summary judgment. The grant recipients will be able to access their funds in the meantime.

could pose the movement’s biggest test yet, measuring whether left-wing candidates can galvanize enough voters to beat Republicans in swing territory.

El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate primary Appeals court says EPA cannot block billions in climate grants

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive and a vocal critic of Israel, edged Rep. Haley Stevens, a moderate, early Wednesday to win the Michigan Senate Democratic primary, according to The Associated Press.

It was a high-profile victory for the ascendant political left, though the rancorous race was ultimately far closer than polls had suggested, with El-Sayed leading by less than a percentage point Wednesday morning. He will face former Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican, in a general election clash that could determine control of the Senate.

On Wednesday morning, El-Sayed and Democrats from across the ideological spectrum raced to project party unity after a bitter and expensive primary campaign.

Speaking at a rally in Detroit, El-Sayed hailed Stevens as “one of the most committed public servants that you’ll ever meet.” He also extended a hand to the broader electorate, urging voters regardless of party to support him if “you believe, like me, that you ought to be able to afford your groceries.”

El-Sayed, the Michigan-born son of Egyptian immigrants, also issued a warning to Republicans who may seek to weap-

onize his name or otherwise engage in Islamophobic signaling.

“My name is not raising your gas prices,” he said. “My name is not taking us to war. My name is not the reason you can’t afford your groceries.”

Stevens called El-Sayed on Wednesday morning to concede the race, a spokesperson for her campaign said. On social media, Stevens wrote that she had offered him “my full support as we work to defeat Mike Rogers.”

Throughout the primary, the question of which candidate was best positioned to win in November was a central feature of the race.

El-Sayed and his allies argued that his populist rhetoric would energize voters across the political spectrum who are unhappy with the status quo. He plainly tapped into simmering Democratic fury with the party establishment, and with President Donald Trump.

But many Democratic leaders had rallied around Stevens, a centrist, fearful that the left-wing views espoused by El-Sayed, a former public health official and a proponent of universal healthcare, could imperil the party’s chances of defending a crucial seat in a closely divided political battleground.

The Michigan Senate primary now is the most significant triumph for the political left this year. The general election there

The Senate primary was also defined by fierce debates over Israel. El-Sayed overcame $60 million in outside money supporting Stevens, including about $32 million from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a major pro-Israel group whose involvement became a source of frequent conflict in the contest.

In his speech Wednesday, El-Sayed continued to attack AIPAC, but promised Jewish voters that his commitment to “Jewish safety is the same commitment that I have to the safety of my own daughters.”

Here’s what else we’re covering:

— Where Michigan moved left: Rep. Shri Thanedar, a second-term Democrat, lost to a democratic socialist challenger, state Rep. Donavan McKinney, becoming the latest Democratic incumbent to lose amid a surge of anti-incumbent fervor this cycle. Progressives also won a Michigan Democratic primary in a district that included Lansing, where William Lawrence, an organizer, beat two centrist Democrats in a House race that is expected to be competitive this fall.

— Where the left hit its limit: In Missouri, Rep. Wesley Bell fended off a primary challenge from former Rep. Cori Bush, a democratic socialist.

— The next big test: El-Sayed’s general-election campaign will measure whether an insurgent and proudly left-wing candidate can win in a moderate state.

What one witness saw moments before a fire started

Paul Child and his grandson were about half a mile from their home outside Spokane, Washington, when they spotted a man standing over a stretch of tall grass and trees near a railroad. The man appeared fidgety and nervous when he saw Child’s car approaching, Child said.

Soon after reaching home, Child heard his daughter call from the backyard, saying she saw smoke nearby.

“I ran out the door,” said Child, 64, who suspected that the man he had seen had started a fire.

The family called 911 and prepared to evacuate, while Child drove down the road to warn his neighbors. Within 20 minutes, firefighters and a police officer arrived to a fire that was already out of control.

Authorities said in an affidavit that they had detained a man named Aaron F. Farinacci and asked Child to confirm whether he was the same man he had seen moments earlier. He did.

The blaze, later named the Old Trails fire, quickly became one of three fast-spreading wildfires in Spokane County that have scorched more than 10,000 acres since last weekend. The fires, which were still active as of Tuesday, have forced some 65,000 people, including the Child family, to evacuate their homes. At least 700 structures have been destroyed in the blazes, but no fatalities have been reported.

When police detained Farinacci, 37, on Saturday, the origins of the fires were unknown, according to court records. When Farinacci was questioned, he denied starting the fire, the affidavit states, and the authorities let him go. By the next day, though, investigators had found that the Old Trails fire was consistent with one started by a lighter or match, and they discovered that it had begun in the same spot where Child had reported seeing the man.

On Monday, Farinacci was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree arson, which is punishable by up to life in prison and a $50,000 fine upon conviction. He is being held on a $1 million bond.

Farinacci made his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon. A judge kept the bond and said that Farinacci could not be in possession of any lighters, matches, torches or fire-starting devices if the bond were posted. The judge scheduled an arraignment for Thursday afternoon, when Farinacci is expected to enter a plea.

Colin Charbonneau, the director of the county public defender’s office, said that he represented Farinacci during Tuesday’s hearing and that a lawyer in his office would likely be assigned to represent Farinacci starting Wednesday. He did not comment further on the case.

Farinacci was carrying waterproof matches and a butane lighter when he was arrested, said Sheriff John Nowels of Spokane

County. Court documents show that Farinacci had been investigated in connection with two fires in Washington last summer, but he was not arrested in either case.

In 2012, Farinacci was convicted of a felony in Arizona in the death of his father. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault after initially being charged with first-degree murder, according to court records from Maricopa County.

Records for that case show that Farinacci, who was 21 years old at the time of the killing, fatally shot his father after an argument in their home. He told investigators that he had not intended to shoot his father and that he had tried to kill himself afterward.

Court records showed a history of mental illness and treatment, but he was declared fit to stand trial. Under a plea deal, the murder charge was dropped, and Farinacci was released on probation in 2020.

Neither Farinacci’s mother nor his siblings responded to requests for comment Tuesday. Nobody answered the door at a Spokane apartment that was listed as Farinacci’s residence.

At some point after his release on probation, court records show, Farinacci moved to Washington, where he worked a fulltime job and lived with his brother and later with his girlfriend.

On Sunday, Child returned to his home, which survived the fire. He wondered whether he should have stopped and confronted the man he saw.

“I do second guess myself, whether I could have done something more,” he said. “But it’s good to see there might be accountability.”

Earlier in the week, weather conditions had improved, allowing some evacuees to return. But on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said that smoke from the wildfires had extended into western Washington and was causing poor air quality. Higher temperatures and drier air forecast for later this week were expected to bring a return to extremely critical fire weather.

I’m begging you: Never write with AI

This column isn’t so much an argument as it is a plea: Don’t use artificial intelligence to help you write. Never let AI do your writing for you.

Don’t use it for school papers, work briefs, letters to your in-laws, speeches at your company gathering or emails (however perfunctory) to your colleagues or friends. Don’t let it organize your notes. Don’t let it suggest an opening sentence, a segue or a closing paragraph. Don’t ask it to write a first draft and pretend that editing that draft somehow makes it your own. It doesn’t.

Do none of these things not because they are unethical. Writing with AI is unethical when it’s a deception: when you pass off words, ideas and information as your own when they

aren’t. An acknowledgment can largely address the problem. Do none of these things, either, because you might be able to learn to write better than an AI can. Pretty soon, if not already, you won’t, just as you can’t outrun a car or outplay a chess app.

The problem with writing with AI is that it’s mentally enfeebling — an escalator toward a result when you really need to make a daily habit of taking the stairs. As it becomes ubiquitous, it undermines not only our individual ability to write but also a society’s collective ability to reason, a culture’s inner capacity to create and everyone’s reason to care. We’re already reckoning with the well-documented decline of reading; AI is accelerating the decline of writing, ushering us further into what The Atlantic’s Rose Horowitch calls our “postliterate age.”

What, uniquely, does writing do? It compels thought. It compels thinking in ways that silent contemplation or spoken language rarely can. It compels us to subject our thinking to the effort of articulation, the rigor of grammar, the tests of intelligibility and coherence, the inspection of others. In doing so, it also enjoins us to be clear, logical and accurate — and accountable. People may easily forgive a word said in anger but not so easily one written in anger, precisely because the fact that it was written tells us that it was considered.

The considered word matters. It has staying power and moral weight. We use the expression “I want that in writing” not only so there’s no mistaking the exact words that have been agreed upon but also as proof that the words are meaningful in the first place.

But what happens when the words aren’t considered because they were written by (or with the help of) a machine?

Words become hollow. Imagine the father of the bride turning to AI to help him write his daughter’s wedding toast: What the AI can supply in eloquence it subtracts in effort and authenticity. Now imagine that the daughter learns that the speech was written by AI: Wouldn’t she be right to be disappointed, if not insulted?

Many would argue there’s a big difference between using AI for something as significant and personal as a wedding speech and the boring and frequently exhausting tasks of writing, say, routine office memos. But the intellectual muscle that’s exercised in everyday writing is the same one used for the writing that matters. We become better writers by the constant effort that mundane writing demands. We become better thinkers by investing into that writing a degree of attention we’d never give it if we relinquished the task to AI. We become more creative when we learn how to put a personal stamp even on routine things, making them unmistakably our own.

These skills are now evaporating. A recent examination using AI-detection technology of 100 doctoral dissertations found that 56% of them contained “more than negligible” AIgenerated writing and 19% had “more than 50% AI-generated text.” Anecdotal stories from college professors have a finger-

“This column isn’t so much an argument as it is a plea: Don’t use artificial intelligence to help you write,” writes New York Times columnist Bret Stephens. (Tamara Porras/The New York Times)

in-the-dike feeling with regard to their efforts to hold back the flood of AI-generated student papers. It’s easy to treat the problem as one of mere cheating. But cheating doesn’t capture the real scope of the AI threat, which isn’t merely to academic integrity or personal betterment but also to democratic selfgovernance.

The link between broad-based literacy and the rise of democracy is well known: People who can read and write for themselves have, historically, also been good at choosing and advocating for themselves. What happens when the process goes into reverse? When people lack the patience to absorb arguments more than a few pages or sentences long? When they lack the ability to contradict those arguments because they’ve never honed, through daily practice, the most essential skill for clear thinking?

We’re already getting a taste of what this world looks like in President Donald Trump’s social media posts and the sway they clearly exert over tens of millions of Americans. But that’s a reflection of where the country was a decade ago, in the pre-AI age. How much farther down the road are we now, with our even more diminished capacity to read, write and think?

The next time you’re tempted to just adopt an automated response for a text message or an email, don’t. Type out a response that’s your own. Think of it as an act of free will. Or a vote against Trump. What takes you a few additional seconds is an act of resistance against an ever-dumber world.

Zendaya, Tom Holland and Gen Z’s movie triumph

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey” assembled Avengers-style to power the biggest movie weekend ever for the domestic box office. But beyond the dollar signs, do these films about an angsty superhero and a brooding Greek king have anything in common?

Well, “Tomdaya,” of course.

The portmanteau of Tom Holland, 30, and Zendaya, 29, has been scrawled across the internet since they met during the casting process for “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017). A decade later, Generation Z’s fandom for the couple, now married, has grown even stronger.

The actors and sweethearts helped draw young audiences to “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which set a box-office record with $360 million domestically, and “The Odyssey,” the epic that keeps on giving. Both movies are nearing $1 billion in global ticket sales.

It’s another positive sign of post-pandemic boxoffice recovery, which continues to be led by younger generations of theatergoers.

Caught in a ‘Spider-Man’ web

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is Holland and Zendaya’s fourth Spider-Man film together, and their first since the “Home” trilogy wrapped in 2021. That year, the co-stars, playing the superhero and his quick-witted love interest, MJ, went public with their relationship.

“Brand New Day,” a superhero movie guided more by sentiment than spectacle, dethroned “Avengers: Endgame” ($357 million) for the largest domestic box-office haul on an opening weekend, not accounting for inflation.

According to Sony, which distributed the movie, young adults drove turnout. Of ticket buyers, 61% were between the ages of 18 and 34, while 48% were under 25. (Gen Z covers people born between 1997 and 2012, making them about 14 to 29 today.)

Greg Durkin, the founder of Enact Insight, an entertainment research firm, said in an email that the movie “had broad audience appeal, with extra love from Gen Z.” Durkin previously told The New York Times that casting was a factor driving that generation’s interest.

The movie’s inclusion of Sadie Sink, 24, whose star rose on the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” may also have increased the youth appeal.

Epic turns in ‘The Odyssey’

Director Christopher Nolan recruited Holland — evidently to the actor’s surprise — to portray Telemachus, the plucky prince of Ithaca, in “The Odyssey,” Nolan’s take on the ancient Greek poem. Zendaya has less screen time than Holland but is memorable as the goddess Athena, who is Odysseus’ spiritual guide on his yearslong journey home from war.

“The Odyssey,” which also stars Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, is the first feature film to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras, driving cinephiles to travel across state and even international borders. The movie opened to about $124 million at the domestic box office.

But wait, there’s more

Zendaya is having a huge year after portraying a woman whose upcoming wedding is shaken by a teenage secret in “The Drama.” A24, the movie’s producer and distributor, said in an email that the film’s viewership skewed young, with more than 80% of its audience under the age of 35. (“The Drama,” as well as “The Odyssey,” also stars Robert Pattinson, who has declared himself a member of Gen Z despite being 40 years old. In his words: “It doesn’t matter.”)

Later this year, Pattinson will reunite with Zendaya in “Dune: Part Three,” a sandswept science fiction opera directed by Denis Villeneuve whose predecessors grossed a combined $1 billion worldwide.

The next “Dune” film could benefit by its release date: Dec. 18, when “Avengers: Doomsday” will also be released. In “Barbenheimer” fashion, it’s being called

“Dunesday.”

Holland’s Spider-Man is not listed on the “Doomsday” roster, but fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe think he could make a surprise appearance or a cameo in a post-credits scene. It would be yet another openingday hurrah for Tomdaya.

Ariana Grande to step away from public life after tour ends

Ariana Grande will curtail public appearances after her current world tour wraps up in September, citing “endless, ongoing public scrutiny” as a reason for her “much-needed break,” according to a statement issued on her behalf.

Grande, 33, who is in Chicago for her Eternal Sunshine Tour, “will be taking a step back from visibility” after the tour concludes in London, a representative for the singer said Sunday.

“She looks forward to finishing the tour and ending

it on a high note, both healthily and happily, and then taking a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances, which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny,” the statement said.

Empire Street Productions, an independent production company, confirmed in a statement on social media Sunday that Grande would no longer star in the new stage production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park With George,” which is set to open next year at the Barbican Center in London.

“We know this cannot have been an easy decision, and she makes it with our complete understanding and

support,” Empire Street Productions said. “We wish her nothing but the best.”

The company added that the production would continue as planned.

Grande, an actress as well as a pop star, has faced increasing scrutiny about her weight loss, with images of and headlines about her splashed across tabloids and social media.

She released her eighth studio album, “Petal,” on July 31, which trades her signature effervescence for something darker and more brooding as she appears dissatisfied with the invasive nature of fame.

US stock market could ride earnings strength to more gains after S&P 500 hits record

PUERTO RICO STOCKS

As the U.S. stock market soars to fresh record highs this week, investors say a powerful corporate profit engine, a reset in high-flying AI shares and still-reasonable valuations can further fuel the rally.

The benchmark S&P 500 on Tuesday posted its first record closing high in two months. In between, swoons in high-flying semiconductor and other technology shares weighed down indexes, but stocks gained sharply in recent days, boosted by signs of calming U.S.-Iran tensions.

said Marta Norton, chief investment strategist at retirement and wealth services provider Empower.

With its recent surge, the S&P 500 was last up about 13% in 2026. Some investors argue that the index is in a healthier position after a sharp pullback in an AI trade that had become overheated. After tumbling from its late June high, the Philadelphia SE semiconductor index is still down about 17% from that peak, even as it remains up over 70% on the year.

“Now that we’ve gone through the selling pressure, you’re at a more balanced state around some of these key names that were rising in the second quarter,” said Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise.

Markets are also in the midst of another quarterly earnings season that has surpassed lofty expectations, driven by massive spending on AI-related infrastructure. That profit optimism should provide critical fundamental support for equities in the months ahead, investors said, even as they caution that risks such as rising Treasury yields remain.

“Absent something coming out of left field, absent major concerns around the yield curve, we have a generally favorable backdrop for the back half of the year,”

One key hurdle for the stock market was the results from Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta Platforms — whose combined massive spending on AI data centers is boosting semiconductor firms and other companies involved in the expansion. Capital spending by those hyperscalers plus Oracle is expected to reach nearly $800 billion this year, according to Goldman Sachs strategists.

In their reports, hyperscalers showed returns on their investments, alleviating concerns they would reduce spending, a move that would have hurt those companies that have been boosted by those outlays, according to Eric Johnston, chief equity and macro strategist at Cantor, the investment banking arm of Cantor Fitzgerald.

“The hyperscalers can work because they’re getting an ROI on their cloud business,” Johnston said. “But so can semis because ... the capex can continue. And it’s that combination which is super powerful right now.”

With more than 75% of S&P 500 companies having reported results, overall second-quarter earnings are on track to climb 31.1% on an adjusted basis from a year ago, according to LSEG IBES data as of Wednesday, the highest growth since 2021. Estimates for the third and fourth quarters have also ticked higher.

Second-quarter tech sector earnings are on pace to rise 72%, with growth expected in 10 of 11 S&P 500 sectors.

Iran says it is nearing final agreement with Oman on Strait of Hormuz

Iran and Oman are close to finalizing an agreement on an acceptable route for ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, according to state media reports Wednesday.

The two countries, which sit on opposite sides of the strategic waterway, have been in talks to find a formula to reopen the strait. Iran effectively closed the strait, used to transport a significant quantity of the world’s oil and gas supplies, in retaliation for attacks by the United States and Israel this year.

Iranian officials have insisted that they will not give up on some measure of control over the strait, which before the war was an open international waterway.

“The geographic coordinates of the route envisioned by both sides have been agreed upon,” the spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Esmail Baghaei, was quoted as saying by Iran’s state news agency. “If certain third parties do not obstruct the pro-

cess, a joint statement by the two countries, containing the principal considerations and points of agreement, is currently in the final stages of review and drafting.”

Officials familiar with the emerging accord had earlier told The New York Times that under its terms, vessels heading into the Persian Gulf would transit a channel controlled by Iran and close to its coast. Ships leaving the gulf would travel on a channel near Oman.

Baghaei said nothing about charging fees or tolls for ships passing through the strait, according to the reported comments.

A regional diplomat with knowledge of the ongoing talks said the negotiators were working hard and hoping for the best.

The Omani government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Iranian officials have said that while there will be no tolls charged in the strait, the agreement includes a “service fee” to cover the environmental effect of the shipping, security for the cargo ships and tankers, and staffing. Revenues would be divided equally between Iran and Oman, Iranian officials said.

But a U.S. official familiar with the negotiations said Monday that the Iranian account was “not accurate,” and that any

“temporary” routes established through the strait would not involve approvals or permissions by Iran and no tolls.

Pope Leo will visit Peru, where he lived for years, in November

The Vatican announced on Wednesday that Pope Leo XIV would go to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru in November. It will be a homecoming of sorts for Leo, an American who worked and lived in Peru for many years.

Leo will begin his South American trip in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, on Nov. 6. He will visit the cities of Paysandú and Florida before heading to Argentina, where he will travel to Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Luján. In Peru, the longest leg of the trip, he is expected to go to Lima, Cusco, Pucallpa and Chiclayo, a northern city where he served as bishop from 2015 to 2023. He will return to Rome on Nov. 17, the Vatican said.

Leo has no current plans to visit the United States, where he was born. But during an interview with American news outlets last week, he said he planned to go “soon,” probably within the next two years.

Chiclayo will be one of the most anticipated stops on his November trip, which will be Leo’s sixth outside Italy since he became pope. Residents of Chiclayo consider the pope one of their own. He was known for traveling the region’s mountains and coast for long hours by car, and occasionally on horseback.

But Leo was also accused of failing to sufficiently investigate claims by three women in Chiclayo that priests had abused them as children.

Leo, then Robert Prevost, first arrived in Peru as a missionary in 1985 and lived there intermittently — some 20 years in all — until 2023. He obtained citizenship in 2015 because of a treaty between the country and the Vatican, which says that bishops who live in Peru must be citizens.

His return will be in line with the practices of his recent predecessors, most of whom made papal visits to countries with which they had strong personal ties. John Paul II went to his native country, Poland, eight times during his papacy, and Benedict XVI went to Germany, where he was born, three times.

Only Pope Francis broke with that tradition, never returning to Argentina, his homeland, during his 12-year papacy. That is still a sore point for many Argentines.

Leo will be the second pope to visit Uruguay, nearly years 40 after John Paul II did. Catholics make up just 36% of Uruguay’s population, less than in any other Latin American country, according to the Vatican media outlet Vatican News.

John Paul visited Argentina and Peru twice during his pontificate. Francis visited Peru in 2018.

Guyana ferry tragedy exposes political rifts in oil-rich country

The sinking of a state-run ferry, which killed an estimated 100 people last month, is deepening political fault lines in Guyana, an oil-rich country and a top U.S. ally in South America.

The tragedy was Guyana’s deadliest event since the 1978 Jonestown mass murder and suicide, which left more than 900 dead. Many Guyanese are asking how this new disaster could happen in what is now one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

When the ferry sank, I was in Guyana to report on something completely different: the nation’s oil boom. But everywhere I went, the tragedy suddenly dominated conversations, reflecting how the sinking had unleashed tensions in this former British colony.

“Our leadership paints Guyana as the next Dubai, but this debacle shows how absurd that narrative is,” Cathy Hughes, a former member of parliament, told me at a nighttime vigil in the capital, Georgetown.

The ferry capsized on the night of July 18, when it was overloaded with excess passengers and cargo while making a routine run from Georgetown to the gold-mining outpost of Port Kaituma, deep in the hinterlands near Venezuela.

Gripping the country with nightmarish accounts, survivors said they were awakened in the middle of the night when the vessel began keeling. They grasped whatever floating debris they could find, waiting hours before rescue crews arrived.

Some survivors described seeing children being swallowed by the sea, and several of the 73 bodies recovered so far are children’s. The ferry was carrying an estimated 179 passengers, dozens more than it should have been, according to survivors and the official manifest, which listed 133.

About 30 passengers are still missing. Senior Guyanese officials including the minister of public works, Juan Edghill, who is responsible for state-run transport services, have asserted that the vessel was operating within its approved limits and that mechanical failure was not to blame.

Edghill did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.

The loss of so many lives has had an outsize impact across Guyana, which has a population of only about 1 million spread across a landmass about the size of the United Kingdom, which has nearly 70 million people.

Roy Henry, 21, said he lost his mother,

Rona Mendoza, 40, in the tragedy. Henry said his brother, Jason Henry, 25, was also on the ferry but survived by holding on to a floating ice chest for hours.

“I am just trying to get my mind off of it and not study her too much,” Roy Henry, a wood craftsman, said about his mother, who sold groceries in the region around Port Kaituma, using an idiom about having her on his mind. “If I study her, I would not eat.”

As grief resonated across Guyana, it became clear that the tragedy was exposing tensions over government accountability and glaring inequality in a country that experienced mind-boggling economic growth of 19.3% last year. That outstripped by far other booming economies in the region, such as Paraguay’s, which grew 6.6% the same year.

This boom is reshaping Georgetown, a once-sleepy outpost. New high-rises are going up. Migrants from Cuba and Venezuela are flocking to the city. Chinese work crews are building highways. Luxury SUVs clog the city’s streets.

The ferry was a preferred option for many. Most aboard could not afford a $140 plane ticket to Port Kaituma, which would have enabled them to avoid taking the 24-hour boat trip. They were among the many Guyanese who have been left out of the boom.

It is still not clear what caused the ferry to capsize. It was built in 1939, decades before Guyana gained independence in 1966, and was scheduled to be inspected for potential re-

ce or corruption might have played a role in allowing the aging ferry to transport more passengers than it should have.

“This is not the picture of a government caught flat-footed,” the state-run Guyana Chronicle newspaper said in an editorial excoriating people who posted images of those who died. “This is a moment that demands unity, competence and restraint.”

Still, the reactions to the tragedy are showcasing Guyana’s sharp political divisions.

Azruddin Mohamed, the leader of Guyana’s opposition, mounted his own rescue efforts in the waters where the ferry capsized, and he shared video on social media of bodies floating in the sea while assailing the government’s response.

Few in Guyana view Mohamed’s motivation as purely altruistic. The scion of one of Guyana’s wealthiest families, he was placed under sanctions in 2024 by the United States for gold smuggling and bribery schemes.

pairs later this year, authorities said.

A new ferry from India was recently acquired to replace it, authorities said, but officials were waiting for port upgrades to be completed to put it into service.

Guyana’s government has hit back aggressively at criticism of its handling of the episode.

President Irfaan Ali, who handily won reelection last year to a new five-year term, has made repeated trips to the area of the disaster to speak with family members who lost loved ones. He also declared he would investigate what caused the vessel to sink.

Senior officials have rejected claims that rescue efforts were too slow, or that negligen-

While Mohamed was scouring for survivors, authorities were searching his home in connection with an investigation into the execution-style killing of a gold dealer in 2021 outside a popular Georgetown nightspot.

Some Guyanese suggested that this could end up bolstering Mohamed. He has denied involvement in the killing and cast the inquiry, as he did the U.S. sanctions, as a politically motivated hit job aimed at taking him out of politics.

But the government did not stop there.

Authorities also arrested Sherod Duncan, an opposition member of parliament, after he traveled to the site of the disaster and launched a drone to capture aerial footage of recovery vessels and the gathering of families at the waterfront.

People protest the government’s response to the ferry sinking during a memorial for the victims in Georgetown, Guyana, on July 22, 2026. The capsizing of the ferry was Guyana’s deadliest event since Jonestown in 1978. ( César Rodríguez/The New York Times)

White House readies AI framework to review security risks

In a meeting earlier this week with top artificial intelligence companies, White House officials said the federal government planned to review only certain types of artificial intelligence models for potential security risks and not others, according to four people familiar with the discussions.

The AI models the government plans to review are known as “closed” models, which do not publish their underlying code and are made by companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, according to three of the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the details of the meeting were private.

The administration does not plan to review “open source” AI models, which have computer code available to the public to download and modify, although that could change as the technology advances, the people said.

The moves are an effort by the Trump administration to take a more hands-on approach to regulating AI, and they formalize oversight of leading AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic. But they delay addressing some of the most pressing regulatory issues with the technology, including potential threats posed by increasingly powerful open-source models made by Chinese companies.

President Donald Trump attends a working lunch with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, left, in Evian-les-Bains, France, during the G7 Summit, June 17, 2026. In a meeting on Tuesday, Aug., 4, 2026, with top artificial intelligence companies, White House officials said the federal government planned to review only certain types of artificial intelligence models for potential security risks and not others, according to four people familiar with the discussions. (Photo by Haiyun Jiang/The New York Times)

The decision to exclude open-source models could also be a boon for companies that are trying to catch up to Anthropic and OpenAI, which are widely considered leaders in developing next-generation AI. Some companies, like Meta, have used open-source software to create products to directly compete with the two leading startups.

The framework, which comes after months of private discussions between administration officials and a handful of the world’s most consequential tech companies, is likely to shape the global AI race. Companies have long decided largely on their own whether to give the public access to the latest advances or to withhold them over concerns about safety and security. Now, the United States will have a greater opportunity to weigh in, potentially giving the government the ability to slow down the rollout of the technology.

Among those in attendance at the meeting were representatives from Anthropic, OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta, Google and Nvidia, according to two of the people. The White House solicited feedback from the companies, but the rules governing the AI reviews are almost complete, said one of the people.

American companies including Nvidia, Meta and Google make open-source models. But it is the open-source models of Chinese firms such as Alibaba, DeepSeek and Moonshot AI that have caused the most concern among administration officials.

Chinese models have recently performed nearly as well as leading American models, causing concern that China could be pulling ahead in the AI race. But it is unclear whether the United States has the capacity to regulate this foreign technology through the new review process, and it is unlikely Chinese companies or Beijing would submit to American reviews.

“I don’t think this framework seriously wrestles with the question of: What do we want the guardrails on advanced AI

to be, and as it evolves should they get stronger?” said Lindsay Gorman, a former tech adviser to the Biden administration.

President Donald Trump started his second term as a booster of AI, painting his support as necessary for the United States to stay ahead of China. He has urged little regulation and cultivated relationships with top AI companies and billionaires invested in the technology.

But his stance has shifted amid broader concerns that AI could spike power prices, lead to job losses and expose major institutions to sophisticated cyberattacks. In June, Trump signed an executive order giving the government oversight over new advanced models, resulting in the framework previewed to tech companies on Tuesday.

“The voluntary framework advances the Trump administration’s America First cybersecurity strategy by strengthening our national security and cementing American AI dominance,” Liz Huston, a White House spokesperson, said in a statement. “Companies that choose to collaborate with the administration through this framework are putting American innovation, security, and cyber defense first.”

The Commerce Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The decision was first reported by Axios.

Details of the framework governing the reviews of the AI models, one of the most significant federal efforts to oversee a fast-evolving technology, will not be made public, the people said. Neither will a list of “trusted” institutions that will get early access to advanced AI models alongside the government, said a person familiar with the matter.

The decision to keep the details secret immediately drew criticism from close AI industry observers.

“A rulebook can only hold AI companies in check if people outside those companies know what the rules are,” said Brad Carson, president of the nonprofit group Americans for Responsible Innovation. “The administration’s decision to keep their framework secret shuts those voices out and threatens public accountability, which underpins our democratic institutions.”

OpenAI and Anthropic have also recently disclosed incidents in which their models escaped from testing environments and hacked other companies, adding urgency within the administration to review the models for security.

On Tuesday, OpenAI said in a blog post that it had discovered more instances of its models carrying out smaller cyberattacks. The incidents occurred when OpenAI’s technology was being tested by other organizations, including a company the AI lab uses to do cybersecurity testing and Britain’s AI Security Institute. That institute also tested models from Anthropic and found that they, too, attempted to hack other organizations, it said in a blog post.

(The New York Times has sued OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming copyright infringement of news content related to AI systems. The companies have denied those claims.)

Aguada, Bayamón to square off in BSN final

The Santeros of Aguada will face the Vaqueros of Bayamón in the National Superior Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) finals after defeating the Leones of Ponce 95-89 on Tuesday night in Game 6 of the Conference B Finals.

The Santeros, who won the B final series four games to two, delivered a solid

team performance at Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce led by Rigoberto Mendoza, who finished with 28 points and 10 assists. Joel Soriano contributed a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, Jacob Wiley added 22 points, and Iván Gandía and Manny Camper contributed 11 points each.

The victory also marked Aguada’s second road win of the series. The Santeros had taken a 3-1 lead by winning Game

Jalen Crutcher led Ponce with 20 points, followed by Christian Negrón with 16, Thomas Robinson with 15 and Jezreel de Jesús with 11.

PR adds 4 medals, including gold in decathlon, at CAC Games

Puerto Rico added four medals to its tally on Tuesday at the 25th Central American and Caribbean Games (Santo Domingo 2026), securing one gold, two silver and one bronze medal in athletics.

The gold medal went to Yariel Soto, who was crowned decathlon champion with 7,884 points -- a title Puerto Rico had previously won at San Salvador 2023. Silver medals went to Víctor Ortiz in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14 minutes, 02.74 seconds, and Grace Claxton in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 55.40 seconds. The mixed 4×100 relay team -- comprising Eloy Benítez, Gladymar Torres, Adrián Canales, and Frances Colón -- won the bronze

medal following two disqualifications and set a new national record with a time of 41.39 seconds.

In team sports, the Puerto Rican baseball team defeated Colombia 8-6 in the opening game of the Super Round, keeping on track for a spot in the final. The women’s volleyball team lost 3-1 to the Dominican Republic and will face Mexico in the quarterfinals. The women’s handball team lost 29-28 to Cuba in the semifinals and will compete against Mexico for the bronze medal.

In men’s boxing, Juliam Ortiz (65 kilograms/143 pounds) and Ángel Llanos (70 kg/154) advanced to the semifinals, securing at least two bronze medals for Puerto Rico. In table tennis, Adriana Díaz, Brianna Burgos and

Kristal Meléndez advanced out of the women’s round of 32, while Jabdiel Torres and Enrique Ríos advanced out of the men’s round of 64. In sailing, several Puerto Rican boats remained in medal contention, while Esmeralda Butler and Gabriel Lavallee qualified for the skateboarding finals. Additionally, Abigail Granell began the qualifying round for the 25-meter pistol event.

As of Wednesday morning, Puerto Rico stood in fifth place in the medal count -- ranked according to gold medals won -- with 76 total medals (19 gold, 26 silver, 31 bronze). Mexico led the count with 279 total medals, including 123 gold, followed by Colombia (181, 61 gold), Cuba (96, 35 gold) and Venezuela (130, 22 gold).

South Korea cancels 2 days of baseball

South Korea’s professional baseball league scrapped all 10 games scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday as a record-breaking heat wave gripped the nation, overwhelming both players and fans and forcing authorities to warn citizens off the streets and farm fields.

The brutal heat set a record Sunday, when a southwestern town clocked a staggering 42.5 degrees Celsius (about 108.5 degrees Fahrenheit) — the highest reading in 122 years of weather observations in South Korea.

Illnesses related to the extreme weather have claimed 21 lives since mid-May, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency confirmed Wednesday. President Lee Jae Myung declared the scorching conditions a national disaster Tuesday, a day after three citizens, ages 77 to 97, collapsed and died

while walking or working in garden plots.

amid sweltering weather

Elsewhere, the heat has emptied outdoor markets and construction sites, triggered power outages in parts of the country as electricity demand spiked, and killed hundreds of thousands of pigs, chickens and other livestock, the Home Ministry reported.

On Wednesday, the state weather agency placed over half of the Seoul metropolitan area under its highest heat wave warning, issued when temperatures are expected to breach 39 degrees Celsius. Fire trucks sprayed water onto scorching asphalt. Motorbike couriers braved the elements to deliver shaved ice and other treats to people staying indoors. Flophouse residents were relocated to air-conditioned public bathhouses overnight free of charge.

In rural towns, drones equipped with cameras and loudspeakers buzzed over farmland, urging workers to head in-

doors. The drones also broadcast a recorded plea from Health Minister Jeong Eun-kyeong, warning citizens to avoid outdoor activity.

The Korea Baseball Organization said Wednesday it canceled games “recognizing the serious safety risks posed to spectators and players by the recent, prolonged nationwide heat wave.” It was the first time in league history that play had been halted across the country because of extreme weather.

During a Tuesday evening game in Incheon, west of Seoul, dozens of spectators were treated for heat-related symptoms. One male spectator collapsed from dizziness, briefly halting the game as he was rushed to the hospital.

Players have struggled too: Last Friday, a catcher was pulled from a game after suffering a headache and vomiting.

So far this year, the league has canceled 15 games because of extreme heat, including two on Tuesday.

Víctor Ortiz won a silver medal in the 5,000 meters as Puerto Rico picked up four medals on Tuesday at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo. (COPUR)
