Woman shot in femicide-suicide case in Guayama dies

Police reported on Wednesday that the woman who had sustained gunshot wounds in a femicide-suicide case reported at a residence in the Villodas neighborhood of Guayama has died.

According to authorities, a call to the 9-1-1 Emergency System on Tuesday morning alerted them to gunshots at the location. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a man who had taken his own life and a woman with gunshot wounds.

Police specified that the man was identified as Ferdinand Dávila Vélez, 56, while the woman was identified as Kenya Enid Morales Dávila, 37, who reportedly worked as a Head Start supervisor in the southeastern coastal town. According to official reports, the woman was transported to the Mennonite Hospital in Guayama, where she passed away on Wednesday.

It was reported that Officer Mary Ann Ramos Bermúdez of the Homicide Division of the Criminal Investigations Corps (CIC) in Guayama, along with Prosecutor Paloma Crespo, is in charge of the investigation.

Guayama Mayor O’brain Vázquez Molina issued a written statement in which he said: “With deep sorrow, we received the news of the passing of our beloved colleague from the Guayama Head Start Program, Kenya Morales.”

“Kenya was a committed public servant, a woman of

faith, and an exemplary mother,” the mayor said. “To her family members, we extend our solidarity and our most sincere embrace. We pray that God grants them strength, comfort, and peace during this very difficult time.

“From the Municipal Administration, we remain in support of -- and in communication with -- both her family and her coworkers, who also mourn her passing. May she rest in peace.”

Police urged anyone with information that could assist in solving cases to call 787-343-2020, or to reach out via X (formerly Twitter) at @PRPDNoticias or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/prpdgov.

“Under this bill, the Bureau loses direct control over inspections, which would instead pass into the hands of authorized external personnel,” Tirado said in a written statement. “This reduces the Fire Department to a mere oversight body, whereas its historical and essential role has always been active prevention.”

The union leader argued that the measure undermines the preventive and technical functions of the Firefighters Bureau by sidelining personnel specifically trained in fire management and structural hazard assessment.

“The intent is to relegate our firefighters to the role of observers, after permits have been endorsed, rather than al-

lowing them to serve as key players in prevention,” he added.

“That is both unacceptable and dangerous.”

Tirado cited the 1986 fire at the Dupont Plaza Hotel in Puerto Rico and the recent catastrophe at the Jetset nightclub in Santo Domingo as stark examples of the consequences that arise when prevention and oversight systems fail.

“History has taught us that when safety controls are weakened, the results can be fatal,” he stressed. “We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past.”

The union announced that it will participate in the public hearings on the bill scheduled for May 6 in the House of Representatives.

Tirado noted that this is not the first time an attempt has been made to curtail the role of the fire prevention inspector. Just last year, the union publicly denounced a memorandum issued by the DDEC that sought to expedite permit renewals without requiring input from fire prevention inspectors.

“Thanks to the union’s firm opposition, that initiative was ultimately rescinded -- precisely because of the risks it posed,” he said.

Ex-justice chief Sagardía provides his version of tax filing dispute

Former Puerto Rico Justice Secretary Antonio Sagardía

de Jesús said Wednesday that he did not serve as legal counsel for former Housing Secretary Ciary Pérez Peña amid public scrutiny over alleged irregularities at an inspection center she owned, Yabucoa Auto Services.

Sagardía said he provided only a consultation at Pérez Peña’s request and that she never retained him.

He added that, at the time, he had no contractual relationship with the Department of Housing and therefore faced no conflict in discussing the matter.

“Ciary Pérez Peña never hired me,” Sagardía said on the television program “Puestos Pa’ La Mañana,” adding that even if she had retained other attorneys, he would have been able to speak with her because he was not a Housing Department contractor.

Tax filings dispute

Sagardía also addressed a separate controversy involving his tax records after the island Treasury Department declined to provide his tax information to the Senate in response to a request from Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz. Sagardía said the disputed “information returns” were not requested

at the outset and insisted he never refused to provide tax documentation, adding that he deferred to the Treasury secretary’s position on institutional policy and was not authorized to disclose information protected by attorney confidentiality.

After the Court of First Instance and the Court of Appeals issued rulings favoring the Senate and ordering Sagardía to make his tax information public, Rivera Schatz criticized what he described as the late filing of information returns.

“Tax returns are sacred to a taxpayer, and as secretary of justice, I know the law and I know there is a procedure for requesting documentation,” Sagardía said, adding that he took responsibility for how the matter unfolded.

He said he chose Puerto Rico’s optional income tax method, under which taxpayers pay based on gross income without claiming deductions. Sagardía said his accountants believed an

informational return was not required under that approach, but he acknowledged the filing was an error and said he submitted the return on March 24 through the SURI system and paid the administrative penalty imposed.

Subcontracting questions

Responding to allegations that his law firm failed to withhold taxes from subcontracted entities -- while the firms later filed their own taxes for services rendered -- Sagardía said he was advised those firms were taxpayers and that he did not benefit from the arrangement.

“There was no tax benefit for me; on the contrary, it cost me the penalty,” he said.

Sagardía, who is now a government contractor, said he coordinated contracts with outside law firms that later provided services, and that agencies with which he held contracts authorized the subcontracts.

“Since I couldn’t invoice, they [the outside firms] sent me their hours, and I prepared the invoices,” he said.

Vega Baja hospital seeks Chapter 11 reorganization, says services will continue

Wilma N. Vázquez Hospital announced this week it has begun a financial reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, a move hospital leaders said is aimed at stabilizing operations and keeping services available for patients.

Attorney Jesús E. Batista Sánchez said the filing follows what he described as a “structural crisis” affecting healthcare providers across Puerto Rico, but argued that reorganization will help the hospital meet its obligations to employees, physicians and suppliers while continuing to serve the community.

Wilma N. Vázquez Hospital Executive Director Denise

M. Chinea Rivera said the facility will remain open with its current workforce of more than 500 employees and will not carry out layoffs as a result of the Chapter 11 process. She said all units will continue operating, including the hospital’s 24-hour emergency room.

Chinea Rivera also pointed to oversight visits by the island Department of Health and the Office of the Patient Advocate, saying the hospital has maintained uninterrupted services and has operated in compliance with applicable laws and regulations while responding to information requests from the Health Department.

The hospital, founded more than 40 years ago by physicians, said it is working to ensure “uninterrupted” care for patients while strengthening its finances through the court-supervised

reorganization.

The filing comes as hospital operators across the island report pressure from shifting demographics and financial strain. A 2025 report by at-large Rep. Gabriel Rodríguez Aguiló warned that dozens of the island’s 42 hospitals could be at risk of bankruptcy in the coming years, citing delayed payments from insurers and rising operating costs.

Recent high-profile cases underscore the fragility of the sector. In August 2025, the Asociación Hospital del Maestro Inc. filed for Chapter 11 protection, and the Health Department later maintained a closure order for the San Juan facility. The broader financial distress has been fueled by a shrinking and aging population, higher-acuity patients and persistent reimbursement challenges, analysts and policymakers have said.

Comptroller reveals payments for substandard work & improperly approved aid in R3 Program

Puerto Rico Comptroller Carmen Vega Fournier revealed on Wednesday that an audit of the Department of Housing identified improperly approved aid, payments made for substandard construction work, and a home rebuilt with public funds that ultimately ended up in the hands of a bank. “The administration of public funds -- particularly those aimed at addressing critical needs such as housing -- demands the highest level of diligence, transparency, and compliance,”

Vega Fournier said in written remarks.

Audit Report OC-26-23 covered the period from Jan. 1, 2018, to Dec. 31, 2023, and evaluated the operations of the Department of Housing’s Repair, Reconstruction, or Relocation Assistance Program (R3 Program).

Vega Fournier said the report issued a qualified opinion, concluding that the program’s operations complied in all significant respects with applicable laws and regulations, with the exception of three findings related to the program’s administration.

One of the findings notes that the program disbursed $253,139 to rebuild a home that was never inhabited by the beneficiary, as it was acquired by a bank through a foreclosure proceeding prior to the final inspection.

According to the report, the final cost of rebuilding that property amounted to $280,239. The bank acquired it at auction for $82,800 and subsequently sold it for $89,000.

Another finding identified aid that was approved for applicants who failed to provide required documentation or who did not meet the established eligibility criteria.

University of Puerto Rico (UPR) President Zayira Jordán Conde announced on Wednesday the official launch of UPR Virtual, a platform that consolidates the system’s fully online academic programs, professional certificates and short courses.

The launch comes amid student strikes at a trio of UPR campuses, including the UPR system’s two largest, calling for Jordán Conde’s resignation, driven by dissatisfaction with her performance. She made the announcement along with 11 campus chancellors and the executive director of the Molecular Sciences Center.

University officials said the initiative aligns with Gov. Jenniffer González Colón’s policy agenda to strengthen the UPR as a driver of innovation and economic development by expanding access through digital transformation and online course offerings.

Officials described UPR Virtual as part of a broader push to expand access for students in Puerto Rico and beyond, while boosting the institution’s global reach and building a more resilient model for delivering higher education.

The portal brings together degree programs, professional certifications and short courses offered entirely online, aiming to provide a more flexible pathway for traditional and nontraditional students.

UPR currently offers 28 programs, including 21 degree-granting tracks and seven professional and graduate certificates, which officials said already serve more than 700 students online across the university system.

Jordán Conde said the initiative is intended to help the university

“adapt to today’s realities without compromising excellence or quality,” while expanding its reach and supporting Puerto Rico’s innovation and economic development goals.

Edna M. Chaar Santana, vice president for professional and distance programs, said the portal is meant to simplify the search for online options by presenting the systemwide offerings in a single place.

Ilka Ríos Reyes, vice president for academic affairs and research, said the system’s online portfolio is expanding and includes programs designed to meet workforce demand and areas of specialization.

Officials also cited an expanded membership in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements, or NCSARA, which they said helps ensure quality standards, protects student rights and facilitates offering online programs outside Puerto Rico.

The platform is designed to serve working adults, nontraditional students, professionals seeking new credentials and international students, according to university officials.

Alfred Díaz Meléndez, associate vice president for student affairs, said the portal is set up so prospective students can explore programs and complete an application online.

University leaders said UPR Virtual is part of a broader strategy to expand access through technology and strengthen the institution’s national and international presence in online higher education.

The UPR said it expects the portal to support continued growth in online offerings across the system.

UPR records 1,147 admission cancellations amid strikes UPR launches virtual platform amid student strikes

University of Puerto Rico (UPR) President Zayira Jordán Conde said Wednesday that the university system has recorded 1,147 admission cancellations for this year’s incoming class, while campuses affected by work stoppages are evaluating adjustments to the academic calendar.

“It is highly probable that the majority of the campuses that have been affected by work stoppages will have to make some type of adjustment to the academic calendar,” Jordán Conde told members of the press.

Alfred Díaz Meléndez, the UPR’s associate vice president for student affairs, said the admissions process has already taken place and that the university is currently in the stage of confirming admitted students.

“For the [incoming] Class of 2026, we received 11,700 applications,” he said. “9,975 students were admitted. As of today, 8,789 have confirmed their attendance, and 1,147 have cancelled.”

The official clarified that the cancellations correspond to students who declined their acceptance, while other applicants simply failed to confirm their admission or offer an explanation.

Díaz Meléndez noted that on the same date in 2025, UPR had recorded 810 admission cancellations, com-

pared to the 1,147 reported this year.

The official maintained that the increase cannot be automatically attributed to the current situation at the campuses, although he acknowledged that it could be a

contributing factor and that a campus-by-campus analysis would be required.

Jordán Conde indicated that she has requested a plan to increase the conversion rate of admitted applicants into enrolled students, given a historical attrition rate of nearly 30% between these two groups.

“We have an intensive support plan in place throughout the summer to try to recover those cancellations and convert those applicants into enrolled students,” she said.

The UPR president also pointed out that certain orientation activities and assistance sessions for completing financial aid applications have been disrupted at campuses such as Mayagüez and Río Piedras, where students have gone on strike along with the Ponce Campus, which could potentially impact the confirmation processes. Students at the currently striking campuses have demanded that Jordán Conde step down by May 4. Students at the UPR campuses in Bayamón and Cayey have voted to go on indefinite strike on that date if that demand is not met, while students at UPR-Humacao, the system’s third-largest campus after Río Piedras and Mayagüez, voted for a 72hour strike starting May 4 under the aformentioned terms.

Jordán Conde maintained that enrollment remains stable compared to the previous year and that the university projects a similar number of admitted students for August 2026.

At state dinner, King Charles charms the court of Trump

King Charles III demonstrated what seemed to be a master class in Trump II diplomacy at a state dinner in the East Room of the White House on Tuesday night, delivering a speech with all the right ingredients in just the right amounts.

There was dry British understatement; jokes tailored to President Donald Trump’s proclivities (a Coca-Cola toast and crack about “readjustments” to the East Wing); a little obsequiousness balanced with a little prodding about NATO; and the shiniest, Trumpiest of gifts.

“Mr. President,” the king said, “I am delighted to present to you, as a personal gift, the original bell which hung on the conning tower of your valiant namesake.” He gestured to an object that had been sitting under a golden cloth on a white pedestal beside him. The red-coated arm of an equerry shot forth to unveil a highly polished bell.

Etched quite clearly onto the bell’s surface were the words TRUMP 1944. Evidently there had been a submarine called HMS Trump, launched from a U.K. shipyard in 1944, that played a role in the Pacific during World War II.

At this, the president stood up from his chair and looked in awe at his new bell. He glanced over at his wife and raised his eyebrows, as if to say: You see that, honey?

“Should you ever need to get hold of us,” the king said, “well, just give us a ring!” The room burst into applause and the president, looking positively beatific, flashed the king

a thumbs-up.

For so much of the night, Trump, dressed in a white tie, seemed like putty in the bejeweled hands of the monarch. There are few foreign figureheads who can work this president the way this king can. But even for the best of them, Trump can be tricky, and there was one moment at the state dinner when King Charles got a dose of that reality.

The president, who spoke before the king, was zipping through a chunk of his speech that was about all the places around

the globe where the Yankees and the Brits fought side-by-side. “The beaches of Normandy, the frozen hills of Korea to the scorching sands of North Africa and the Middle East—”

The Middle East.

He looked up from his script. “And we’re doing a little Middle East work right now, too, if you might know, and we’re doing very well,” he said, beginning to veer dangerously off-piste.

The president is currently quite angry at the British. They refuse to follow the United States into what they perceive to be yet another misadventure in the Middle East. He has responded by calling their aircraft carriers “toys” and by belittling their prime minister.

And now Trump was dredging up all of that unpleasantness at his nice state dinner, though, curiously, he would not bring himself to actually say the “I” word.

“We have military defeated that particular opponent,” he continued, “and we’re never going to let that opponent ever—” and then he stopped himself and blurted out: “Charles agrees with me even more than I do. We’re never going to let that opponent have a nuclear weapon.” And then it was back to his script.

Even on his very best behavior, Trump could not help but stir up some trouble. With just those nine little words — “Charles agrees

with me even more than I do” — he risked drawing the king into the fray. As sovereign, this was exactly the sort of thing he tries to avoid.

But it was just a flash. And the president seemed supremely chuffed by the whole thing.

The king had started off his speech by acknowledging the mayhem that broke out over the weekend, when a gunman tried charging into the ballroom of the Washington Hilton while the president and first lady and most of the Cabinet were inside. “Keep calm and carry on,” the king said.

The list of people who the White House invited was a mix of Trump family members, media handmaidens, titans of tech and finance, plus the six Supreme Court justices from whom Trump demands unquestioning loyalty.

It was not immediately clear whether all who had been invited actually showed up, but the list of those who the White House wanted there for the big state dinner was in and of itself an interesting document to decode.

There were the business titans: Tim Cook; Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez; David Ellison; Marc Andreessen; Stephen Schwarzman; Isaac Perlmutter.

There was the delegation from Murdochland: Fox News’ chief executive Suzanne Scott and a flock of her highly paid talking heads including Jesse Watters, Bret Baier, Maria Bartiromo, Ainsley Earhardt, Greg Gutfeld, and Laura Ingraham; and also Keith Poole, who is the top editor of the New York Post, the also-owned-by-Rupert-Murdoch tabloid newspaper that Trump cherishes.

There was the Melania inner circle: Melania Trump’s decorator, Tham Kannalikham; her clothing designer, Hervé Pierre; her most trusted aide, Hayley Harrison; and her father, Viktor Knavs.

There were the Supreme Court justices. Not all of them; just the six conservative ones.

And there were the Trump children: Ivanka and her husband Jared; Eric and his wife Lara; Tiffany and her husband Michael. There was something comical about seeing the king and queen among the Trumpian court. But it all seemed to work out as intended. After the king finished speaking, Trump clapped him on the shoulder. “Great job,” he said. And then he looked over at his new Trump bell.

“That’s so beautiful.”

Comey makes first court appearance after second indictment against him

James Comey, the former FBI director, made his first court appearance Wednesday after being charged over a photograph of seashells he had posted on social media that the Justice Department branded a serious threat to President Donald Trump.

Comey, a longtime critic of Trump, appeared in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, for a brief, largely procedural appearance before a judge. He was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury in North Carolina on two counts: making a threat against the president and transmitting a threat across state lines. It was the second time the administration had brought charges against him, signaling a renewed effort by the Justice Department to pursue Trump’s rivals.

and selective prosecution.”

The hearing was over in less than 10 minutes.

In a brief video posted online Tuesday, Comey said he was determined to fight the charges. “This won’t be the end of it — but I’m still innocent, I’m still not afraid, and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary.”

He added, “So let’s go.”

The charges against Comey stem from a social me dia post he shared nearly a year ago, of seashells arranged in sand to form the numbers “86 47.” The phrase is often used by protesters to call for Trump, the 47th president, to be ousted from office. Merriam-Webster defines “eighty-six” as an old slang term meaning to dismiss or remove.

Cuando una sonrisa cambia, todo cambia.

Usually, after defendants turn themselves in to face charges in another state, they appear before a judge, who describes the counts they face and hears preliminary arguments over whether they should be detained. Comey is expected to appear in court in North Carolina at a later date.

In U.S. District Court in Virginia, Comey was seated at the defense table wearing a dark suit over a blue dress shirt, flanked by his two lawyers, Jessica Carmichael and Patrick Fitzgerald. Members of Comey’s family sat together in the back of the courtroom during the hearing.

Comey did not speak before the magistrate judge, William E. Fitzpatrick, but nodded along as he was reminded of his rights and the charges against him. The judge addressed mainly administrative matters, including the conditions of Comey’s release, during which he referred to the last time Comey appeared at the federal court in Alexandria, over the first indictment the Justice Department brought against him.

“I don’t think conditions of release are necessary,” Fitzpatrick said, shaking his head. His tone and manner were brusque. “They weren’t necessary last time,” he added. “They are not necessary this time.”

Fitzgerald was the only one who spoke for Comey and told the court that they would be challenging the case by claiming a “vindictive

After the image set off an uproar, Comey denied that the post’s message was violent and took it down.

Members of the administration and Trump’s defenders seized on the post, describing it as a call to kill the president. Prosecutors reiterated that argument in a three-page indictment, asserting that “a reasonable recipient who is familiar with the circumstances would interpret” the message “as a serious expression of an intent to do harm to President Trump.”

B E

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Trump said he believed the term “86” was a mafia term for killing someone.

“That’s a mob term for killing,” he said. “The mob uses that term to say when they want to kill them; they say 86 the son of a gun.”

Asked if he believed Comey’s social media post had put him in danger, the president replied, “Probably.”

“People like Comey have created tremendous danger, I think, for politicians and others,” Trump said, before returning to an old complaint of his that the former FBI director was “a dirty cop.”

The administration’s previous effort against Comey faltered. In September, a grand jury in Virginia indicted him on charges of lying to Congress. He pleaded not guilty, but a federal judge dismissed the charges after ruling that the prosecutor assigned to bring the charges, Lindsey Halligan, had been appointed unlawfully.

The banality of evil, again

President Donald Trump erupted in anger at CBS journalist Norah O’Donnell after she read him excerpts from what is said to be a manifesto written by Cole Tomas Allen, the man charged with trying to kill Trump at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Some conservatives seem to think no good can be served from reading these words, but that’s a mistake: It’s always useful to be reminded, again, of the banality of evil.

The distinguishing feature of the manifesto is its insipidity. “I am a citizen of the United States,” Allen writes. “What my representatives do reflects on me.” Later, he justifies the possibility that he might harm the people in the ballroom “on the basis that most people chose to attend a speech by a pedophile, rapist and traitor, and are thus complicit,” although he adds that “I really hope it doesn’t come to that.”

The manifesto lays out five objections to what he is about to attempt — starting with “As a Christian, you should turn the other cheek” — followed by his brief rebuttals. The impression is less of a person struggling with an anguished conscience than of someone not bright enough to come up with objections that would force anything but glib self-justification.

Finally, the author is at pains to convey the impression that he’s a nice guy with a sense of humor. He apologizes to everyone he deceived (“I apologize to my parents for saying I had an interview without specifying it was for ‘Most Wanted’”) and offers copious thanks to family, friends, colleagues and students. His final words are that he experiences “rage thinking about everything this administration has done,” followed by “Stay in school, kids.” He is — or so he thinks — Guy Fawkes by way of Sesame Street.

Is this even worth rebutting? It is, and not merely as a matter of simple politics. Allen seems to have drunk deeply from a liberal well in which defensible objections to administration policies mingle freely with the more lurid suspicions of the president that emerged from investigations into Russian collusion and the Epstein files. As the in-

vestigation into Allen unfolds, it will be interesting to learn from where he got his news. In another life, he might have made a living as a writer at The Daily Beast.

The degree to which facts have become hard to disentangle from conspiracy theories is one of the depressing hallmarks of the age. So is the relentless hyperbole about the president’s alleged destruction of democracy. But conservatives should be wary of pointing fingers here. Who is it, after all, who tried to delegitimize not one but two Democratic presidents, the first through preposterous claims about a fake birth certificate, the second through outrageous falsehoods about a stolen election?

Somewhat more interesting than the politics expressed is the philosophy, such as it is. That’s the philosophy of John Wilkes Booth, who shouted “Sic semper tyrannis” — thus always to tyrants — after he shot Abraham Lincoln. It’s the philosophy of Luigi Mangione, who is accused of assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and who, in a manifesto found with him, insisted that “parasites” like Thompson “simply had it coming.” It’s a philosophy that sometimes wins sympathy in this country — like from those who, citing Friedrich Engels, explain that identification with Mangione is an entirely normal reaction to the “social murder” being perpetrated by insurance companies.

In short, it’s the philosophy of people who believe that democracy is actually despotism, provided they don’t like its results; that the laws of such a democracy are an oppressive sham that must be actively resisted; that the way to bring about change isn’t through political participation and elections but rather through multiple homicides. On the right, this is called fascism. On the left, communism. They are functionally almost interchangeable.

And increasingly chic.

“Microlooting” — previously known as shoplifting — is now a thing, at least with one edgy New Yorker writer intent on sticking it to a grocery store. Hasan Piker, the fashionably dressed left-wing streamer, stayed at a five-star hotel in Havana in March so he could join hands with the regime’s dictatorial officials to denounce American iniquity. Rama Duwaji, now the first lady of New York, liked social media posts celebrating the pogroms of Oct. 7, 2023. Rape and murder haven’t been this cool since the Rolling Stones released “Gimme Shelter” in 1969.

All this is banal not only in its intellectual unoriginality (when will it occur to the Pikers of the world that the term “useful idiot” applies precisely to them?) but also in its moral and emotional shallowness. Wisdom begins in self-doubt, and self-doubt enjoins moral caution, most of all when it comes to irreversible deeds. Among the virtues of democracy is that it allows us to advance our beliefs tentatively. It permits us not only to change the things we don’t like, lawfully and peacefully, but also to change our minds should we see the error of our ways.

What ‘Michael’ gets right and wrong about Michael Jackson

“Michael,” the new biopic about Michael Jackson’s triumphant but traumatized life, underwent costly reshoots when Jackson’s estate discovered a legal agreement from the ’90s preventing the film from depicting a child who had alleged the star sexually abused him at the time. Instead, the movie’s central conflict is between the Jackson 5 patriarch, Joseph Jackson, and the family group he drove to superstardom, particularly Michael, its dynamic frontman.

In this version of the story, what does the film fictionalize and what does it get right? Here is the fact check, based in part on research for my book “MJ: The Genius of Michael Jackson”:

Did Joseph Jackson beat Michael with a belt when he was a little boy — and call him “Big Nose”?

Yes, the beatings did occur, according to both of the Jacksons. Michael accused his father (played by Colman Domingo) of abuse from belts and “iron cords.” Joseph told the BBC, “I whipped him with a switch and a belt. I never beat him — you beat somebody with a stick.” In the film, Michael’s mother, Katherine, confronts Joseph: “What are you going to do, beat him? You gonna whup him?” But in a 2013 CNN interview, Katherine Jackson defended her husband: “I didn’t think he was too tough,” and added, “If you did something wrong, you got a scolding for it, and you also got a licking for it.”

As for “Big Nose,” it was Michael’s brothers who gave him this cruel childhood nickname, according to J. Randy Taraborrelli’s book “Michael Jackson: The Magic, the Madness, The Whole Story 1958-2009.” Although The Guardian and other publications suggested Joseph Jackson called him this name, too, Michael’s father denied it.

Did Michael Jackson broker a truce between Los Angeles gangs?

Yes, in a way. He wanted a “West Side Story” dance concept for his “Beat It” short film, and instructed his manager at the time, Ron Weisner, to meet in downtown Los Angeles with Crips and Bloods — with security present. The gangs agreed to participate, then arrived at the rehearsal warehouse in two buses. Dancer Popin Pete has recalled, “These

people switched to the nicest people ever.”

Did Walter Yetnikoff, head of Jackson’s label, CBS Records, make a threatening phone call to MTV that resulted in the artist’s videos being played on the channel within hours?

Depends on whom you ask. In his autobiography, “Howling at the Moon,” Yetnikoff, who died in 2021, said he made such threats, with the support of producer Quincy Jones. Executives at the CBS-owned Epic Records from that time agree: He called Bob Pittman, then the MTV Networks CEO, and, referencing other CBS acts, said, “‘You know all those Bruce Springsteen and Cheap Trick and Charlie Daniels videos that you guys are playing over there?’” Ron McCarrell, a label marketing executive, has recalled. “‘Pack ’em all up, put ’em in a box and send ’em back.’” But MTV executives from that era dispute this account. “It never happened,” Les Garland, a network executive at the time, has said. “Folklore, man, folklore.” Either way, Jackson’s smash “Billie Jean” premiered on the influential cable channel in March 1983 and integrated what had been almost exclusively a

format for white rock artists.

Did Michael Jackson fire his manager — his father, Joseph — by fax?

No. Joseph said he hired Michael’s early-’80s co-managers, Weisner and Freddy DeMann, and told them: “We don’t really get what we need out of the record company, so I need some white guys to help me out.” (This prompted an exchange in Billboard magazine in which Joseph referred to Weisner and DeMann as the “white help,” and Michael said his father’s statement “turns my stomach.”)

In March 1983, just as “Thriller” was taking off, both management deals expired, and Michael turned to Frank DiLeo, his friend and promotion man at Epic Records, to manage him until the early ’90s.

Did Jackson’s hair catch fire during the filming of his 1984 Pepsi commercial video with his brothers?

Yes. The “Michael” rendition of this event is largely accurate, as shown in a video of the incident posted by Us Weekly in 2009, including crew members extinguishing the flames from the top of his head. “He was literally standing in a ball of flames,” a member of the lighting crew said.

The film depicts Jackson and his lawyer, John Branca (Miles Teller), discussing a seven-figure settlement with PepsiCo, which Jackson demands be donated to a burn center. The real-life number was $1.5 million, according to People magazine and other reports, and established the Michael Jackson Burn Center at what was then called the Brotman Medical Center in Culver City, California. The center closed in 1987, and the medical center is today the Southern California Hospital.

What the film doesn’t show: After Jackson left the hospital, he began to take painkillers, which, he said in a statement later, led to dependency.

Did Jackson live with his parents at their family home, on Hayvenhurst Drive in the Encino section of Los Angeles, even after “Thriller” took off?

Yes. Although Branca helped Jackson buy a three-bedroom condo in Encino in the early ’80s, the King of Pop could not bring himself to leave his mother, so he remained at the family home until buying Neverland Ranch, in Los Olivos, California, in 1988.

Did Jackson keep exotic animals, in-

cluding Bubbles the chimpanzee and a giraffe, at the Hayvenhurst home?

Yes. The Jackson family accumulated peacocks, tigers, lions, ostriches, dogs and a parrot, as well as Bubbles, who wore OshKosh B’Gosh overalls and learned how to fetch Häagen-Dazs ice cream from the freezer. As for the giraffe, the Los Angeles Times reported that California game officials removed the 6-month-old animal, who lacked a permit, from the Jacksons’ home in 1986.

Did Joseph Jackson intercept his son at home, after Michael’s face was bandaged from his first nose job, and say, “Oh, my God, Michael”?

No. In his 2011 autobiography “You Are Not Alone: Michael Through a Brother’s Eyes,” Jermaine Jackson says it was him, not Joseph, who intercepted Michael. “What in the hell happened to you?” Jermaine recalled asking. While Michael didn’t respond (or say it was for his sinuses, as he does in the movie), Jermaine was later told his brother required rhinoplasty after falling in their family home.

The film makes Quincy Jones’ role in producing “Thriller” seem minimal. Accurate?

No. A prolific producer and bandleader, Jones was a crucial Jackson collaborator for his first three post-Motown solo albums, “Off the Wall,” “Thriller” and “Bad.” Although Jackson wrote “Beat It,” “Billie Jean” and other songs with the help of his “B-Team” of studio pros who worked with him at the Hayvenhurst home, Jones’ “A-Team,” including “Thriller” songwriter Rod Temperton, members of the rock group Toto and bass player Louis Johnson, were instrumental in creating the sound and blueprint of all three albums. Jones and Jackson worked closely for the first two albums and didn’t begin to drift apart until they made “Bad” (1987).

Did Michael come up with the title for “Thriller” after a horror-movie binge?

No. Temperton, the “Off the Wall” writer, had been working on a song called “Starlight,” then woke up in his hotel room with the word “thriller” in his head. Although Michael loved horror movies, and later came up with the idea for the “Thriller” video because he wanted to portray a monster, Jackson and Jones settled on the album’s title track after Temperton rewrote the lyrics.

Wall Street extends losses after Fed decision, big tech earnings on tap

Wall Street moved lower on Wednesday, with spiking crude prices fanning inflation worries as the U.S. Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged at the conclusion of what is likely to be its last monetary policy meeting under Chair Jerome Powell.

The three major U.S. stock indexes gyrated lower after the Fed’s policy statement revealed the decision to hold rates steady was its most divided since 1992, along with uncertainties concerning rising energy prices due to turmoil in the Middle East.

Crude prices jumped after the White House confirmed reports that U.S. President Donald Trump told officials to prepare for a

QUIEBRA

Rising energy prices have revived fears of broader inflation, even as the Federal Reserve concluded what is probably its last policy meeting of the Powell era by leaving its key interest rate unchanged, as expected.

Separately, investors girded themselves for a quartet of high-profile earnings reports due after the closing bell from four of the companies that comprise the Magnificent Seven group of artificial intelligence-related megacap firms: Amazon, Alphabet, Meta Platforms and Microsoft.

The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index was up 1.5%, having gained 43.8% so far this year.

“The real question is not just whether they hit those estimates, but if whatever guidance they can offer would continue to be encouraging for these companies and for AI in particular,” Stovall added.

On the economic front, new orders for core capital goods, considered a barometer of corporate capex plans, jumped 3.3% in March, the largest monthly increase since June 2020.

prolonged blockade of Iranian ports, which suggests ongoing supply pressures due to restricted traffic in the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

“Today oil prices are pretty much leading the movement in the market because it does not appear as if we’re going to be getting any kind of a quick resolution to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz,” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research in New York.

A White House official said Trump had met with top officials from Chevron and other energy companies to talk about possible steps to calm oil markets in case a prolonged blockade of Iranian ports continues for months.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 369.09 points, or 0.75%, to 48,772.84, the S&P 500 lost 21.78 points, or 0.31%, to 7,117.02 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 89.82 points, or 0.36%, to 24,574.33.

Among the 11 major sectors of the S&P 500, energy stocks, benefitting from the jump in crude prices, led the gainers. Materials and healthcare were down the most.

Robinhood Markets fell 14.5% after the online brokerage missed first-quarter profit expectations.

Shares of data-storage companies climbed following an upbeat fourth-quarter forecast from Seagate Technology. Seagate jumped 10.1%, while peers SanDisk and Western Digital gained between 7.1% and 7.4%, respectively.

Starbucks advanced 9.1% after raising its annual profit forecast.

Visa jumped 9% after the payments processing company raised its forecast for full-year earnings.

NXP Semiconductors surged 26.6% after providing secondquarter revenue and revenue expectations were above Wall Street estimates.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 2.62-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 154 new highs and 66 new lows on the NYSE.

On the Nasdaq, 1,277 stocks rose and 3,461 fell as declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 2.71-to-1 ratio.

The S&P 500 posted 20 new 52-week highs and 23 new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 71 new highs and 113 new lows.

Paraguay says it’s not abandoning Taiwan. China has other plans.

There are odd couples. Then there’s Taiwan and Paraguay. The high-tech island nation and its rural, landlocked South American ally sit on opposite sides of the Earth.

United in 1957 by two military rulers — Chiang Kai-shek and Alfredo Stroessner — driven by anti-communist fervor, this improbable duo have been inseparable ever since.

Today, however, Paraguay finds itself a member of a shrinking global club.

China has flexed its economic muscle to force countries, including Paraguay, to break ties with Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory.

Paraguay today is the only South American country to maintain relations with Taiwan and has emerged as one of the most anti-China nations in Latin America.

That stance has bought the goodwill of the United States and made the country something of a darling of the Trump administration as it challenges China in the region.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has praised President Santiago Peña of Paraguay, a conservative, as a “strong American ally,” and President Donald Trump has said he was “doing a great job.”

For his part, Peña described Trump’s reelection as a “dream come true.”

Peña, in an interview with The New York Times, said Paraguay and Taiwan had something in common: They are both underdogs.

Paraguay’s experience of standing up to neighboring “giants” Brazil and Argentina — including a 19th-century conflict that wiped out half its population — make it instinctively identify with Taiwan’s struggle to remain separate from China, he explained.

“Fighting against odds is something that we felt in our own skin,” Peña said.

Yet those odds are growing longer.

Ten countries — including Panama, Honduras, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua — have all switched diplomatic recognition to China in the past decade. Just 12 nations still recognize Taiwan.

Taiwan, with a population of 23 million, has sustained its relationship with Paraguay, a country of 6.1 million, essentially through freebies: a presidential jet, hand-me-down helicopters, electric buses and sightseeing trips for Paraguayan politicians to Taipei, the capital.

It has also dubbed Taiwanese soap operas into Spanish and paid to build Paraguay’s congressional building.

But China is increasing pressure on Paraguay to sever ties with Taiwan.

In the past 18 months, it has been accused of launching cyberattacks against government agencies, bribing top Paraguayan politicians and enticing lawmakers with lavish trips to Beijing. Chinese diplomats have warned Paraguay to “make a correct decision as soon as possible” between China and Taiwan.

Taiwan, however, is also raising the ante, lending Paraguay $200 million to help build homes for the poor and contributing $20 million toward a new hospital.

It has provided more than 800 Paraguayans scholarships to

Taiwan’s ambassador José Chih-Cheng Han in Asunción, Paraguay, Nov. 17, 2025. Paraguay today is the only South American country to maintain relations with Taiwan and has emerged as one of the most anti-China nations in Latin America. (María Magdalena Arrellaga/The New York Times)

study STEM in Taipei and is financing an $18 million technical college in Asunción, the Paraguayan capital.

Taiwanese experts are also kick-starting a local fish-farming industry, an initiative designed to diversify Paraguay’s economy, which revolves around beef and soybeans.

In Eusebio Ayala — a farming town about 40 miles east of Asunción — Taiwan’s overseas development agency is crossbreeding different kinds of catfish to create hybrid specimens that grow faster in tanks and taste better when grilled.

“I love my job,” said Tsan-Ping Wang, 40, the project’s manager, explaining how his team of Taiwanese technicians was on the front lines of a global battle for hearts and minds.

“What we do bothers China,” he added. “But we’re not afraid.”

The delicate position Paraguay finds itself in between China and Taiwan comes at a moment when Trump has made reducing China’s economic influence in Latin America a cornerstone of his policy toward the region.

The United States and Paraguay recently signed deals on critical minerals and military cooperation.

Paraguay last week also received 16 migrants from other countries deported by the United States, the first group to arrive as part of agreements signed with the Trump administration.

Countries with diplomatic ties with Taiwan often face obstacles to exporting to China, including barriers on agricultural goods, beef and other commodities.

As a result, a growing chorus of Paraguayans want to switch allegiances.

Ranchers have complained of not being able to sell to China because of the decades-old alliance with Taiwan.

More firms are joining the Paraguay-China Chamber of Commerce in Asunción, said its commercial director, Jessica Chenu.

Paraguayan agribusiness producers, she said, are seeking ways around bureaucratic hurdles to do business with Beijing, which they see as a larger and more lucrative market.

Splits are also emerging in Paraguay’s government. Seven members of Congress from the ruling Colorado Party were

scheduled to join a visit to Beijing in October, but dropped out, with one lawmaker suggesting that U.S. officials had threatened to cancel his U.S. visa.

A State Department spokesperson would not discuss the lawmaker’s claim, but said the United States can deny visas if the individual’s “proposed activities would have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.”

Some critics of Paraguay’s pro-Taiwan diplomacy also take issue with one of Peña’s core arguments: that Paraguay should shun China as an authoritarian one-party regime.

Esperanza Martínez, an opposition senator, noted that the ruling party has held power for all but five of the past 79 years.

“If we’re going to talk about democracy,” Martínez said, “how are we doing at home?”

As health minister in a previous administration, Martínez recalled Taiwanese diplomats sending her orchids every year on her birthday.

“They’re using us,” she added. “And we’re selling ourselves very cheaply.”

Both Taiwan and China have routinely been accused of playing dirty.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwanese officials say, China offered Paraguay millions of vaccines in exchange for switching recognition — a claim China denies.

Taiwan accuses Huawei, the giant Chinese telecom firm, of spying on its diplomats in Asunción. U.S. authorities blamed Chinese hackers for recent cyberattacks on Paraguayan government agencies.

China’s foreign ministry and its embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment for this article.

In September, a Colorado Party lawmaker was expelled from the Senate for alleged influence peddling after being recorded describing how an $8 million donation from Taiwan would be divided among officials. She said her words had been taken out of context.

In an interview with the Times before he concluded his sixyear posting in February, Taiwan’s ambassador in Asunción, José Chih-Cheng Han, said critics sometimes misinterpreted the purpose of Taiwan’s donations to Paraguay’s government.

“They’re not bribes,” Han said. “We don’t put money in the pockets of any politicians.”

Taiwan is a “reliable partner,” the ambassador argued: one vastly preferable to getting into bed with a “giant.”

“Just because you go with China, it doesn’t bring development,” he added.

Peña, who spoke to the Times in March at a summit in south Florida of conservative Latin American leaders hosted by Trump, said many Latin American countries had pursued “short-term benefit” by flipping to China.

But as China siphoned away their raw materials and undercut their industries with cheap manufactured goods, Peña said, they had come to regret it.

Last year, Paraguay’s economy expanded by 6.6%, among the highest rates in the region.

“Paraguay, even without having relations with China, is outperforming the rest of the countries in South America,” Peña said. “So, what is the additional factor that they will give to us?”

Military quietly accelerates boat strikes, deploying more aircraft

The U.S. military has ramped up attacks against boats in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean this month, flying more attack aircraft than ever before in its campaign to kill people the Trump administration accuses of smuggling drugs at sea, according to a U.S. military official and a person briefed on the strikes.

The latest attack Sunday, which the Pentagon said killed three people in the eastern Pacific, was the seventh this month and 54th overall since the campaign started in September. The strikes have accelerated particularly in the past two weeks, and Sunday’s attack raised the death toll to at least 185.

In an image provided by the U.S. military, a sensor operator takes part in a simulated MQ-9 Reaper drone strike mission in 2024. In the past few weeks, the military has without public notice increased the number of secret fixed-wing attack aircraft and armed MQ-9 Reaper drones operating from bases in El Salvador and Puerto Rico, ramping up attacks against boats in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean, according to a U.S. military official and a person briefed on the strikes. (Senior Airman Deanna Muir/U.S. Air Force via The New York Times)

In the past few weeks, the military has without public notice increased the number of secret fixed-wing attack aircraft and armed MQ-9 Reaper drones operating from bases in El Salvador and Puerto Rico, allowing the military to accelerate the strikes, the two people said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discussion operational matters.

The precise number and type of aircraft involved remain classified — as does so much of the boat strike campaign — and the two people declined to quantify the increase in aircraft other than to say there were now sufficient planes and drones based in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific without having to move aircraft between the two regions.

Before the increase in aircraft, a suspected drug boat might have had a 50% chance of evading the military, the military official said. Now that is down to about 25%, said the official, who declined to describe how the military determines which boats to sink and which to allow the Coast Guard to board and seize — as it has done for decades with drug traffickers.

The descriptions pointed to a military campaign that has grown larger and more lethal, even as it has receded from public consciousness, overshadowed by President Donald Trump’s war in Iran. And they deepened questions about a campaign that many legal experts have said has been a series of illegal, extrajudicial killings.

The increased commitment of military resources to the boat strikes, even as the Iran war has drained supplies of critical munitions and equipment from commands in Europe

and the Indo-Pacific, also underscores the rising prominence of the Western Hemisphere in Trump’s second term.

But the spike in deadly strikes this month comes even as Gen. Francis L. Donovan, who is overseeing the operation as the head of the military’s Southern Command, has acknowledged that the attacks are not a longterm solution to the nation’s drug problem.

Donovan, in testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee, said last month that the strikes had forced narco-terrorist groups in the region to change their operational patterns but added that they were not a silver bullet.

“Boat strikes aren’t the answer,” he said.

The strikes carried out by the military’s elite Joint Special Operations Command with Donovan’s approval are shrouded in secrecy.

The Trump administration says those aboard each of the blasted vessels were smuggling drugs to the United States, but it has offered little evidence to support that claim. Experts on the use of lethal force have said that the strikes are illegal, because the military cannot deliberately target civilians who do not pose an imminent threat of violence — even if they are suspected of engaging in criminal acts.

Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, said Tuesday that he had “serious concerns” about the boat strikes.

”Our service members have been ordered to strike and kill hundreds of suspected criminals in the open ocean over the past eight months, placing them in legally and ethically

perilous circumstances,” Reed said in a statement at a hearing, in part, to examine Special Operations missions.

The administration has claimed the killings are lawful because Trump “determined” that the United States is in a formal armed conflict with a secret list of 24 Latin American drug cartels and criminal gangs, even though Congress has not authorized any war. A secret Justice Department memo approving the campaign is said to rely on that claim as a premise.

Neither the military nor the administration has disclosed the type of weapons used, the aircraft flying the missions, the bases used to conduct the strikes or information about the people who were killed.

In November, The New York Times examined video of more than 40 strikes and consulted military aviators and weapons experts, finding that the U.S. military used a variety of munitions delivered through an operation that relied on both drones and manned aircraft in a departure from traditional stop-and-board operations.

Questions still persist about the specific aircraft the military is using.

In January, the Times reported that the Pentagon used a secret aircraft painted to look like a civilian plane in its very first attack on a boat that the Trump administration said was smuggling drugs, killing 11 people Sept. 2. The aircraft also carried its munitions inside the fu-

selage, rather than visibly under its wings.

The nonmilitary appearance of the classified aircraft raised questions in closed-door briefings in Congress, according to people familiar with the matter. The issue is that if one accepts the administration’s disputed claim that a legal state of armed conflict exists, it is a war crime to feign civilian status to fool adversaries into dropping their guard so they neglect to take necessary precautions, and then to attack and kill them.

In that first attack, the aircraft swooped in low enough for the people aboard the boat to see it, according to officials who have seen or been briefed on surveillance video from the attack. The boat had turned back toward Venezuela, apparently after seeing the plane, before the first strike.

Two survivors of the initial strike later appeared to wave at the aircraft after clambering aboard an overturned piece of the hull, before the military killed them in a follow-up strike that also sank the wreckage. It is not clear what anyone on the boat thought the aircraft was or whether the initial survivors understood that the explosion on their vessel had been caused by an attack.

The military has since switched to using recognizably military aircraft for boat strikes, including MQ-9 Reaper drones, although it is not clear whether those aircraft have flown low enough to be seen. However, in a boat attack in October, two survivors of an initial strike took evasive action — swimming away from the wreckage — and avoided being killed by a follow-up strike on the remnants of their vessel. The military rescued them and returned them to their home countries, Colombia and Ecuador.

Old Ohtani rules spark fresh debate about their fairness

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell isn’t the only person in baseball bothered by the rule that allows the Los Angeles Dodgers to carry an extra pitcher because of Shohei Ohtani’s designation as a two-way player.

“There’s not another player like that,” Counsell said last week, “but one team gets different rules for that player.”

One head of baseball operations, granted anonymity for his candor, said the combination of that rule and another allowing Ohtani to remain as a hitter after he is removed as a pitcher creates the “most lopsided” advantage in major professional sports.

Counsell’s remarks sparked a fresh round of antiDodger sentiment among some fans. But Major League Baseball and its players union did not enact the rules to benefit the Dodgers. They established them three years apart, while Ohtani was still a member of the Los Angeles Angels.

Many in the game are fine with the accommodations made for Ohtani, the best and most interesting player in the sport. Some, though, are frustrated that the rule allowing Ohtani’s team to carry a 14th pitcher extends his already outsize impact. Still, others view his ability to remain in the lineup as a designated hitter once he is done pitching as an inequity all its own.

Let’s sort all this out.

How did the rules come about?

The league and union agreed on a designation for a two-way player in 2019, before Ohtani’s second season in the majors. The rule initially was created to specify under which conditions a position player could pitch.

The parties agreed that designated two-way players from opening day until Aug. 31 would not count against the limit of 13 pitchers on a team’s 26-man roster. Because of COVID, that limit did not take full effect until June 2022.

The other Ohtani rule, the one allowing him to remain in the game as a designated hitter after departing as a starting pitcher, also was introduced in 2022. It states in part, “In the event the starting pitcher will bat for himself, the player will be considered two separate people.”

Hence, the incongruity.

Ohtani counts as one player when building the roster and two when managing the game.

Did the rules promote the use of two-way players?

That was part of the idea, at least according to public statements in 2022 from officials with both the league and the union.

The sport has experienced an uptick in the number of two-way amateurs drafted and signed internationally, with a total of 22 drafted between 2021 and 2025. But those players, often under direction from their clubs, almost always choose between pitching and hitting, abandoning the chance to do both.

San Francisco Giants first baseman Bryce Eldridge and Kansas City Royals right fielder Jac Caglianone were firstround picks who gave up pitching. New York Mets right-

Shohei Ohtani at bat in 2024. “He’s the best player most of us will ever see, and while we could all develop a two-way player, the likelihood we would be in a similar talent bucket is pretty low,” Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen said of the Los Angeles Dodgers superstar. (Wikipedia via Joe Glorioso/All-Pro Reels)

hander Nolan McLean was a third rounder who gave up hitting.

And those are just some high-profile examples.

Some would-be two-way players cannot handle the physical and mental strain. Picking one path or the other often creates a faster promotion to the majors. Players and teams also fear an increased risk of injury.

The requirements for two-way status add to the degree of difficulty: A player qualifies only if he pitches at least 20 major league innings and starts 20 games as a position player or designated hitter, with a minimum of three plate appearances per game, in the current or previous two seasons.

Only Ohtani, the ultimate unicorn, has pulled it off.

“He’s the best player most of us will ever see, and while we could all develop a two-way player, the likelihood we would be in a similar talent bucket is pretty low,” Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen said.

Are the Dodgers taking advantage?

Of course they are! And they paid for that privilege, awarding Ohtani a 10-year, $700 million free-agent contract with $680 million deferred in December 2023.

By then, the rules accommodating Ohtani had been

in effect for two full seasons. The other teams bidding for him were fully aware of the added competitive benefit, and considered it part of his appeal.

Counsell, when asked last week why clubs don’t have additional roster flexibility when dealing with pitching injuries, said: “There’s one team that is allowed to carry basically one of both, and he gets special consideration, which is probably the most bizarre rule. For one team.”

That one team could have been the Angels, if only they had shown the foresight to keep Ohtani. Or any of Ohtani’s other suitors, a group that included the Cubs (who had just hired Counsell), the Toronto Blue Jays and the Giants.

The Dodgers, just as they did with Ohtani’s deferrals, are operating within the rules. Even rival executives who believe they gain too big an advantage with Ohtani do not blame the team — “they are doing exactly what I would do,” one said.

Hazen, whose Diamondbacks compete against the Dodgers in the National League West, referred to the number of games between division opponents each season.

“The bigger disadvantage,” Hazen said, “is having to face him 13 times.”

Is it all too much?

The biggest challenge teams face is maneuvering their pitching through a 162-game season. Injuries wreck plans. Starters pitch fewer innings than in the past. Front offices are constantly juggling, and pitchers who lack minor league options limit their flexibility.

The Dodgers, thanks to Ohtani, are playing with 14 pitchers while their opponents are restricted to 13. Carrying an extra arm enables them to reduce the workloads of their relievers and better protect their staff as a whole.

If Ohtani counted as a pitcher, the Dodgers still would hold an advantage; he essentially would become a 14th position player. That advantage, though, would be less pronounced. Every team would prefer an extra pitcher to an extra position player.

One American League manager said he actually is more bothered that Ohtani can remain a hitter even after he is done pitching. Once a position player is removed from a game, he cannot continue to contribute offensively. He is done for the night.

“When you take Ohtani out, it should cost you something,” the manager said. “There’s no fear of taking him out of a game as a pitcher.”

The counterargument is that the rule keeps Ohtani on display for the fans — no small consideration when talking about the game’s biggest gate attraction — and provides a better incentive for teams to commit to two-way players.

One solution might be to leave that rule intact and eliminate the one giving Ohtani’s team a 14th pitcher, but don’t count on it happening anytime soon. Counsell is pretty much on an island, at least publicly. And the league and union can rightly argue that every team is free to develop its own two-way stars.

Easier said than done, of course. The guy with the Dodgers stands alone.
