opular Democratic Party Rep. José “Conny” Varela Fernández on Wednesday criticized House Speaker Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez for ordering a halt to a legislative investigation into alleged irregularities at island vehicle inspection centers.
“This decision does not serve the best interests of the people, nor the House of Representatives’ institutional obligation to oversee the government with independence and rigor,” Varela said.
Varela said the speaker’s order, issued on Tuesday, amounted to interference with the work of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, chaired by Rep. José “Cheito” Hernández Concepción, and warned it would weaken legislative oversight and the separation of powers.
Méndez cited parallel investigations by the Department of Justice and the Independent Special Prosecutor Panel (PFEI by its initials in Spanish) as a reason for suspending the House probe.
But Varela said neither the Justice Department nor the FEI/PFEI has the public’s confidence, arguing that years of controversy and “questionable decisions” have fueled a perception that they are politicized. He said loss of credibility made the legislative investigation “indispensable.”
The veteran lawmaker from Caguas said the House has an independent constitutional duty to investigate matters of high public interest and propose corrective public policy, separate from any criminal inquiry. He praised Hernández Concepción, a member of the governing New Progressive

Party, for pursuing the investigation despite potential political sensitivities, and said the speaker’s intervention cut short a process he described as serious and already producing findings. Varela also said he hoped La Fortaleza, the governor’s mansion, played no role in the decision.
The House’s legislative investigation into the vehicle inspection centers included a case tied to former Housing Secretary Ciary Pérez Peña.
Méndez’s directive was issued as the House debated testimony from Arturo Deliz Vélez, the former director of investigations and inspections at the Department of Transportation and Public Works, who is also under investigation.
Méndez acknowledged the Legislature’s broad investigative authority but said continuing a parallel inquiry while prosecutors investigate the same events could raise separationof-powers concerns.

The Administration for Child Support (ASUME by its acronym in Spanish) and the Courts Administration Office signed a collaborative agreement on Wednesday to expedite the judicial handling of child support cases through digital access to up-to-date information from the ASUME portal.
“This agreement directly impacts participants in the system because it shortens response times in child support cases and allows decisions to be made based on current information regarding debt, payment history, and compliance,” ASUME Administrator María del Mar Mateu Meléndez said in a written statement.
Sigfrido Steidel Figueroa, the administrative director of the courts, noted that the collaboration “reduces administrative
procedures, contributes to a more informed judicial review of cases, and strengthens inter-agency coordination.”
The agreement will allow judges, child support examiners, and authorized personnel within the judiciary to access the ASUME portal in a read-only capacity to review debt certifications or debt clearance statements, account balances, payment history, and other information related to cases currently before the courts.
According to the entities, the mechanism will feature controlled digital access limited to inquiry functions; therefore, it will not allow users to modify, delete, or add information to the system. It will also incorporate measures to protect data confidentiality and will restrict access to authorized personnel acting within the scope of their official duties.
The agreement will remain in effect until June 30, 2028, and does not involve the exchange of funds between the parties.

Health Secretary Víctor Ramos Otero announced on Wednesday a decrease in influenza cases in Puerto Rico, noting that the main surveillance systems for respiratory and arboviral diseases remain below the epidemic threshold.
“The influenza virus continues to circulate on the island, but indicators remain below the epidemic threshold, reflecting sustained yet controlled activity of this respiratory disease,” Ramos Otero said in a written statement.
“It is essential that the public continue to adopt preventive measures to avoid complications, especially among vulnerable populations,” he added.
During Epidemiological Week 14 -- covering the period from April 5 to April 11 -- the Health Department reported 1,005 new cases of influenza, bringing the cumulative total to 63,680 for the 2025-2026 season. The agency indicated that 49.1% of the cumulative cases occurred within the pediatric population (ages 0 to 19), while the regions of Caguas, Ponce and Bayamón continue to record the highest number of infections.

Puerto Rico.
“For the week covered by this report, 76.2 percent of cases with valid laboratory confirmation were Influenza Type B,” she said. “This pattern reflects a trend consistent with previous seasons.”
The Health Department further reported that 186 deaths associated with influenza have been confirmed this season, with the majority occurring among adults over the age of 70. Regarding vaccination efforts, the agency noted that 457,868 doses have been administered -- some 76,652 more than were administered by the same date during the previous season.
The agency also reported 132 new cases of COVID-19. The Arecibo region recorded the highest infection rate, and the 0–9 age group was the most affected. So far in 2026, 11 deaths associated with that disease have been recorded.
Separately, the arboviral surveillance system reported nine new cases of dengue during Epidemiological Week 14, for a cumulative total of 454 this year. The Health Department noted that the Caguas region accounts for the highest number of cases and that one death associated with dengue has been confirmed this year.

The University of Puerto Rico’s (UPR) Mayagüez Campus has created a multi-sector dialogue forum -- including a representative committee and a certified conflict mediator -- following recent events tied to student strikes, the campus announced.
Campus officials said the initiative was established after guidance from UPR President Zayira Jordán Conde and is intended to create formal spaces for dialogue, listening and problem-solving across the university community.
The committee includes representatives from faculty, staff and students, including the Association of Professors of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, non-tenured faculty, the Association of Supervisors and Managers, the Brotherhood of Exempt Non-Teaching Employees, the
Labor Federation of University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez Employees, the Bonafide Union of Security Officers, the Workers’ Union, the General Student Council, the Student Movement, graduate students, and the chancellor’s office.
Interim Chancellor Dr. Miguel A. Muñoz Muñoz said the university “remains committed to dialogue as the means to address the concerns of our community,” adding that the committee is meant to ensure “different voices can be heard” and to develop alternatives responsibly.
As part of the process, officials said a duly certified conflict mediator will be brought in to help structure the discussions and promote a respectful, orderly and productive exchange among the sectors represented.
Muñoz said he hopes the forum will help the campus identify solutions and build agreements that support institutional stability and the well-being of students, faculty and non-teaching staff.

Presenter Alexandra Fuentes; former leader and emblematic figure of Puerto Rican basketball, Flor Meléndez; sacred music singers Lourdes Toledo and Samuel Hernández; and actor Willie Denton will each have a street named after them in Cidra as part of the celebration of the 217th anniversary of the founding of the municipality, Mayor Delvis J. Pagán Clavijo announced Wednesday.
“This will be a town celebration for Cidra’s 217th anniver-
sary, and within that framework, we will pay tribute to these figures who were born or raised here and who represent the best of our people,” the mayor said. “They are Cidra natives who have left a legacy in communication, sports, music, and the arts, and of whom our town is proud for their achievements and for how they have carried the name of Cidra far and wide.”
The event will take place this Sunday starting at 1 p.m. in the parking lot of City Hall. The festivities will include a town fair with artisans, food vendors and performances by local
talent. There will also be artistic presentations by the student band from Jesús T. Piñero School, as well as Ivano Banda, Diva Acústica and Bravitos de la Plena. Admission is free.
“We invite all residents of Cidra and visitors to join us in celebrating,” Pagán Clavijo added.
Cidra, in the island’s central mountain region, was founded in 1809 and is known as the Town of Eternal Spring for its cool climate. It is also called the Town of the Plain Dove because of the abundance of this species, the only dove on the island with blue eyes.

Sen. Joanne Rodríguez Veve on Wednesday asked the island Justice Department to open a criminal investigation into abortion providers, arguing clinics may be performing procedures outside the narrow exception allowed under Puerto Rico’s penal code.
Rodríguez Veve, who left the conservative Dignity Project (Proyecto Dignidad) party and is now an independent senator, said she filed a formal complaint seeking an “immediate” investigation and cited what she described as shortcomings in the Department of Health’s oversight records provided in response to Senate Information Request No. 2026-0026.
She pointed to Article 98 of the Puerto Rico Penal Code, which treats abortion as a crime except in limited circumstances. Rodríguez Veve said the exception applies only when there is a prior therapeutic indication issued by a physician licensed in Puerto Rico and the procedure is performed to preserve the pregnant patient’s health or life.
In her filing, the senator said Health Department auditors did not document whether the reviewed cases included the required therapeutic indication and that the agency acknowledged it could

not certify how many procedures met the legal exception. She said the records also showed what she called “serious deficiencies” in medical documentation at three of the four clinics that were reviewed.
Rodríguez Veve said audit records from Women’s Medical Pavilion described all 10 sampled medical files as illegible, which she argued effectively prevents regulators from confirming
whether procedures complied with Article 98.
At Darlington Medical Associates and the Family Planning Clinic, she said auditors found records missing the name and license number of the professional who performed the procedure -- details she said are needed to verify whether a physician authorized to practice in Puerto Rico was involved.
“Compliance with the requirements of Article 98 cannot, and never has been able to, rest on a priori presumptions, anecdotal allegations, retrospective assertions, or corrections; it must be tangibly, traceably, and verifiably documented in the medical record,” Rodríguez Veve said.
The senator’s complaint also cites testimony she said Darlington Medical Associates’ medical director, Dr. Yarí Vale Moreno, gave at a public Senate hearing. Rodríguez Veve said Vale Moreno testified that she generally does not ask adult patients why they are seeking an abortion. The senator also claimed the clinic’s abortion numbers increased beginning in 2022, after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and said the growth coincided with advertising promoting Puerto Rico as an abortion destination for women from Florida, Texas and Louisiana.
Based on the records she reviewed,
Rodríguez Veve said there is “clear evidence” clinics may be performing abortions under circumstances that could violate Article 98 and that the Health Department could not verify key elements of the legal exception.
“Given this scenario, the Department of Justice has a duty to act,” Rodríguez Veve said. “When the official documentation produced by the State itself does not allow for action, the duty of the Department of Justice is not to wait: it is to investigate.”
The referral was addressed to Justice Secretary Lourdes Lynnette Gómez Torres and included Health Department documents, clinic promotional materials and a transcript of Vale Moreno’s Senate testimony, Rodríguez Veve said.
In the United States, abortion law now varies widely by state after the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which ended the federal constitutional right to abortion and returned regulation to state governments. As of last month, independent stateside health policy organization KFF reports, abortion was banned in 13 states, while other states enforce limits as early as six weeks of pregnancy and a smaller group has no gestational limits under state law.

Puerto Rico’s labor market continued to show signs of stability and sustained job growth in February, according to the latest edition of the Department of Labor and Human Resources’ Household Survey.
Labor Secretary María del Pilar Vélez Casanova said the February 2026 data confirms that the island “continues advancing toward a more stable and resilient labor market.”
She noted that the administration of Gov. Jenniffer González Colón has emphasized job creation, economic development, and public policies to strengthen the workforce.
“With her support, we are equipping employers with tools and creating new opportunities for workers,” Vélez Casano-
va said. “Our commitment is to continue working so that more people have access to quality jobs and can build a better future for their families.”
According to the report, Puerto Rico’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 5.6% in February, a 0.1 percentage point decrease from January. The number of unemployed residents dropped to 69,000, representing 1,000 fewer people than the previous month.
Total employment reached 1,165,000, an increase of 1,000 workers both month-to-month and year-over-year. The labor force was estimated at 1,234,000, reflecting an annual increase of 2,000 people.
The labor force participation rate stood at 44.7%, a slight adjustment from January and an increase of 0.3 percent-
age points from February 2025, signaling greater engagement of the population in the labor market.
The Nonfarm Payroll Employment Survey also reported positive results. In February 2026, payroll employment rose to 951,500, an increase of 1,600 jobs from January and 400 jobs year-over-year.
Sectors showing growth included recreation and lodging; mining, logging and construction; professional and business services; finance, education and health services; and other services. The government was the only sector that registered a decline.
Vélez Casanova encouraged residents to explore Puerto Rico’s newly modernized labor statistics portal at mercadolaboral. pr.gov, where users can access data, publications and interactive tools related to employment trends.

Democrats maintained their electoral momentum earlier this week by securing the passage of an aggressively gerrymandered House map in Virginia, which could deliver the party up to four extra seats as it tries to win back control of Congress.
National party leaders had been heavily invested in the outcome, with Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the minority leader, helping orchestrate the statewide Virginia referendum with Democratic state legislators. Speaker Mike Johnson, hanging on to a slim majority, tried to rally the state’s Republicans.
Democrats sought to focus the campaign on President Donald Trump, who instigated the nationwide redistricting fight last summer in Texas to help House Republicans in the midterms. A vote for a gerrymandered House map, Democrats argued, was a vote to help their party stop Trump’s agenda. The president stayed out of the contest until the final hours before election day, when he urged Virginians to block the map.
“Donald Trump tried to rig the midterm elections by gerrymandering the national congressional map,” Jeffries said in an interview Tuesday night. “He has failed.”
Here are four takeaways from the election: Democrats have fought to a draw in the clash over maps — for now.
The vote in Virginia erased the small structural advantage that Republicans had built in the country’s redistricting battle.
Republicans could still seize back their edge, however, with the prospect of a new map in Florida. And the Supreme Court may well set off a political earthquake with a ruling that upends a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, which could lead to more Republican gains.
But for now, Democrats have averted their fears from the start of the gerrymandering fight that Republicans could gain an overwhelming

according to data from AdImpact, a media tracking firm. But over that time period, “Yes” did not gain ground in private polling, according to multiple people briefed on the data. By the campaign’s end, the “Yes” side had shifted to an all-Trump, all-the-time message. Advertising, mailers and campaign signs urged voters to “stop the MAGA power grab,” and Virginia Democrats painted a dire picture of allowing Republicans to maintain a House majority.
“To be frank, I think the messaging of late has been better than it was when this effort first started,” Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, a Democrat, said in an interview days before the vote. “When they understand it as evening the playing field and a check on President Trump, we do better.”
Everybody is fine with gerrymandering as long as they get to do it.
cartographic advantage. And with the political environment shifting in their favor, they are increasingly optimistic about winning back the House.
Jeffries, in the interview, made clear that he expected Democrats to claim nearly all of Virginia’s 11 House districts.
“In November, we’re going to win 10 congressional seats in Virginia and take back control of the House of Representatives,” he said.
Republicans fell short, but gained ground in a blue state.
Democrats and Republicans were watching the Virginia election closely for any hints about the national mood before the midterms.
Both parties found bright spots.
For Democrats, a win is a win, and they are thrilled to pick up more House seats.
But Republicans were happy to not be blown out in a state whose last major election was not very competitive. After an ill-funded GOP candidate lost the governor’s race in November to Abigail Spanberger by 15 percentage points, the Republican side of the Virginia referendum kept the race to about a 3-point margin as of late Tuesday.
Republicans argued that the relatively tight result in a left-leaning state was evidence of overreach from a Democratic Party that is again building its political identity around opposition to Trump.
“Virginia Democrats can’t redraw reality,”
said Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina, the chair of House Republicans’ campaign arm. “This close margin reinforces that Virginia is a purple state that shouldn’t be represented by a severe partisan gerrymander.”
Democrats attributed the narrow result to what they called a Republican effort to confuse voters. The “No” ads included old footage of former President Barack Obama and Spanberger — who both backed the referendum — speaking out against partisan gerrymandering.
“There definitely was a strong campaign on the Republican side spreading mis- and disinformation,” Rep. Suzan DelBene of Washington state, the chair of the House Democrats’ campaign arm, said in an interview Tuesday night.
Democrats won with a belated focus on Trump.
When Gov. Gavin Newsom of California orchestrated an election to redraw his state’s congressional map last fall, he cast the race as an opportunity to fight back against Trump.
By contrast, the “Yes” campaign’s first ads in Virginia portrayed the referendum not as a fight against Trump, but as a broad bipartisan effort to level the national playing field by redrawing congressional maps. The result was that the election was framed at the start as a question about gerrymandering more than about Trump.
In the first six weeks of the campaign, the “Yes” side spent $13.5 million on advertising compared with the “No” campaign’s $640,000,
There was a time, not very long ago, when an extreme political gerrymander could elicit an outcry from both parties. That era is over. Now it is clear that pushing for maximal partisan advantage is part of the expectation of being in power, and there is little political risk in vying to shut out the other side.
In fact, there may be risk in not doing so. Trump is backing primary challenges to several Republicans in the Indiana state Senate who resisted his effort to redraw the state’s congressional map.
After the Virginia result, Trump allies were quick to condemn Democrats for their newfound affinity for gerrymandering.
“The hypocrisy is thick,” said J. Christian Adams, the president of the Public Interest Legal Foundation, a conservative legal group. “We have been lectured for years about political gerrymandering by the left. They hate it, until it delivers them power.”
Indeed, Eric Holder, the Democratic former attorney general, started a political organization in 2017 that has spent years denouncing Republican-drawn gerrymanders.
But in Virginia, he campaigned for the “Yes” side, and on Tuesday night he celebrated Virginia’s voter-approved gerrymander as a victory against Republican-drawn gerrymanders elsewhere.
Jeffries, in the interview, argued that Virginia’s vote did not constitute gerrymandering in the same breath as he condemned gerrymandering carried out by Republicans.
“We’re not engaged in political gerrymandering,” Jeffries said. “We are engaged in responding to the Republican effort to rig the midterm elections.”

Afederal judge earlier this week blocked the Trump administration from enforcing a series of decisions that wind and solar developers say have throttled hundreds of renewable energy projects across the country.
Judge Denise J. Casper of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts granted a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit that a coalition of renewable energy developers filed against the Interior Department in December. The developers argued that the Trump administration was unlawfully discriminating against wind and solar power, impeding projects on public and private land.
In her ruling Tuesday, Casper, an Obama appointee, said the developers were likely to prevail on the merits and ordered the Interior Department to stop implementing a series of memos, issued last year, that subjected renewable power to intensified reviews and new restrictions.
The coalition that filed the lawsuit — including RENEW Northeast, the Alliance for Clean Energy New York, the Southern Renewable Energy Association and Interwest Energy Alliance — applauded the ruling. “Our coalition has demanded and received an immediate halt to the Trump administration’s unlawful permitting actions, which have discriminatorily placed wind and solar technologies into second-class status,” the coalition said in a statement.
It is unclear whether the Trump administration will try to appeal the ruling. The White House referred questions to the Interior Department, which said that it does not comment on litigation.
The ruling marked the latest legal setback for the Trump administration in its efforts to thwart wind and solar power. In five different cases this year, federal judges have struck down efforts by the Interior Department to halt construction of wind farms in the Atlantic Ocean.
President Donald Trump has largely scorned wind and solar power, seeking instead to promote fossil fuels like oil, natural gas and coal. The latest case centers on a series of Interior Department actions that greatly slowed or restricted federal approvals for wind and solar projects.
In July, the agency issued a memo saying that a wide array of federal decisions and consultations on wind and solar projects that are typically carried out by career employees would be subject to new layers of review by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s office. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also issued new restrictions for renewable energy projects.
Those actions brought federal permitting

for many renewable energy projects to a standstill, developers have said. Career staffers were unsure how to move forward with once-routine work such as approving plans for access roads. Former Interior Department officials said it was unworkable for the secretary to review each of the hundreds of small decisions needed to approve projects, creating lengthy delays.
While fewer than 5% of solar and wind projects are on lands directly overseen by the Interior Department, even developers that build on private land often need federal approvals. If, for instance, a solar or wind farm is going to disturb nearby wetlands, the developer may need a water permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which in turn often consults with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to gauge the effects on sensitive habitat.
The renewable energy developers gave examples of numerous projects that had been blocked by the permitting slowdown. One planned wind farm in Illinois had been delayed indefinitely while waiting for wildlife and water permits, the filings said. The project lost its spot in line to connect to the electrical grid after its developer had already invested $10 million.
The Interior Department had also barred wind and solar developers from using a taxpayer-funded database known as IPaC, which they needed to document the effects that projects might have on wildlife, even though that data was often required for projects to get federal permits.
In her ruling, Casper said that wind and solar developers were likely to suffer “irreparable harm” if the restrictions on renewable energy remained in place. She ordered the Interior Department to stop implementing the July memo
policy that required the Army Corps of Engineers to consider the “energy density” of a power plant when issuing approvals, an action expected to favor fossil fuels. And the judge blocked the ban on access to the IPaC database.
Renewable energy developers had said that the Trump administration’s restrictions on wind and solar power violated the Administrative Procedures Act, which governs executive branch rule-making, in part because they were not sufficiently justified. Casper suggested that the developers were likely to prevail on those points. She noted, for example, that the July Interior memo was a “significant departure” from precedent that would require “more detailed justification” than had been provided.
that had required all permitting actions to undergo extra layers of review from Burgum’s office. She also blocked implementation of a
The ruling does not address all of the Trump administration’s moves to restrict renewable energy. For instance, many proposed wind farms have been stalled because the Defense Department has stopped finalizing agreements designed to address the risk that turbines interfere with radar, developers have said. That issue was not part of this lawsuit.

If you are looking for two pictures that summarize where Israel’s geopolitical strategy under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has taken the country, you could not do better than a couple of snapshots featured over the weekend in the Israeli press. The first is a photograph of an Israeli soldier using a sledgehammer to smash a statue of Jesus in Debel, a Maronite Christian village in south Lebanon a few miles north of the Israeli border.
The picture, the Times of Israel diplomatic reporter Lazar Berman wrote, “so perfectly encapsulated some of the worst tropes about Israel and Jews that many instinctively assumed it was an AI-generated product meant to slander the Jewish state. Friends of Israel who thought the photograph might be real prayed it wasn’t, so damaging was the picture. Their prayers went unanswered. An IDF soldier had indeed taken a hammer to the face of a statue depicting Jesus.” He added, “There was no AI, no manipulation, no getting around an image that points to a deep moral morass” in the military and Israeli society.
The second is a picture in Haaretz of a group of beaming right-wing Israeli ministers as they opened a newly reestablished settlement, Sa-Nur, in the northern West Bank. It is one of four isolated Israeli settlements plunked down in the region that lies under Palestinian civilian and security authority. The idea behind these settlements is to make it impossible for a contiguous Palestinian state to ever be established. As Haaretz noted, Bibi’s defense minister, Israel Katz, boasted at the ceremony of the government’s expected legalization of around 140 West Bank farm outposts — to foil any “Palestinian attempts to establish a presence in the area.”
Just another day of the Netanyahu government playing President Donald Trump for a fool. This is the Trump who declared in September 2025: “I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank.”
Why are these two pictures so revealing? They are the perfect representations of Netanyahu’s strategy today, if one can call it a strategy: Meet every threat around you by smashing it with a sledgehammer, no matter how many enemies of Israel it makes, and offer no creative ideas for translating military achievements into lasting strategic gains — not in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank or with Saudi Arabia and Iran.
That is because for Israel to consolidate any strategic gains, it needs to be at least trying to produce a two-state solution with the Palestinian Authority. That is what would sustainably isolate Iran across the region. That is what would make normalization of Israeli-Saudi relations, including trade and tourism, possible. That is what would make it so much easier — and less dangerous — for the Lebanese and Syrian governments to make a formal peace with the Jewish state. And that is something Netanyahu refuses to even attempt and constantly works to undermine.
Do I think it would be easy? Of course not. Do I think the Palestinians have an aged, corrupt leadership that needs replacing, energizing and reforming — and have plenty to answer for themselves for their own plight? I sure do. But do I know that Netanyahu has dedicated his entire premiership to obstructing the

tia, to render northern Israel uninhabitable by the threat of rocket attacks. But at some point, the dictum that “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” really has to apply.
Israel keeps saying the Lebanese army needs to disarm Hezbollah. But the Lebanese army is a mix of Christians, Druze, Sunnis and Shiites. Given Hezbollah’s political grip on the Lebanese Shiite community — even with the anger many Lebanese Shiites feel toward Hezbollah today for provoking Israel on behalf of Iran — if the Lebanese army went into open warfare across south Lebanon and in Beirut against Hezbollah, it could splinter and plunge Lebanon back into civil war. The only alternative Netanyahu has offered is driving tens of thousands of Lebanese out of south Lebanon or Shiite areas of Beirut.
emergence of a more credible, decent Palestinian leadership? I sure do, as well.
Do I know that Israel has a fundamental interest in trying in every way possible to separate from the Palestinians, lest it end up as a Jewish-run apartheid state? Absolutely. Do I believe that Iran and its proxies pose a lethal threat to Israel that could not be ignored? Again, absolutely. But do I also believe that without a Palestinian partner, it looks to the world that Bibi’s strategy is to make Israel safe for ethnic cleansing of the West Bank — and that this is losing Israel its best friends everywhere? You bet I do.
Dear Israel: When centrist, longtime pro-Israel Democrats in the United States like Rahm Emanuel go on “Real Time With Bill Maher,” as he did last week, and state to overwhelming audience applause that they oppose subsidized U.S. military aid to Israel and question its “special” status, you’re indeed running out of friends. It is not only on the left. More and more Americans across the spectrum see Netanyahu’s Israel as a spoiled child, and they’re just fed up with it.
Of course, the Israeli government and army command condemned the soldier who smashed the Jesus statue in south Lebanon and punished those involved. Indeed, recognizing what a PR disaster it was, Israel rushed to replace the statue. But where do you think that soldier got it into his head that this would be OK — something worth having another member of his unit take a picture of? I will tell you where he got the idea: watching and listening to the language and actions of Bibi’s own government, army and online poison machine.
What would some fresh strategic thinking about Israel and Lebanon look like? Well, let’s start with the fact that Israel, by my count, has mounted at least seven long-term invasions or extensive military operations in south Lebanon, against either the PLO or Hezbollah, since I first came to Beirut as a reporter in 1979.
Let me be clear: No Israeli prime minister would or should allow Iran’s mercenaries in Lebanon, that is, the Hezbollah mili-
It is time for a third way. I am happy to call it the Trump Plan to Save Lebanon. Push Israel to pull entirely out of south Lebanon and have heavily armed NATO troops help take over the area in partnership with, and under the symbolic authority of, the Lebanese army.
Israel can trust NATO. Hezbollah and Iran will not dare take them on — or if they do, they will be smashed, and a vast majority of Lebanese, including Shiites, will applaud, because Israel will be entirely out of Lebanon and Hezbollah will lose its justification for attacking Israel.
Sure, it may not be a perfect solution, but it is better than Israel invading Lebanon over and over, let alone a Lebanese civil war. It’s worth a try.

Of course his songs are great. Of course his dancing is sublime. You might be lulled into thinking that’s the point of “Michael”: to spend a couple hours basking in a string of showstoppers, reveling in the transcendent talents of the King of Pop, from his days fronting the Jackson 5 to — well, to performing “Bad” at Wembley Stadium in London, anyhow.
But that was never the point of this movie, and that’s as plain as day.
Near the start of Antoine Fuqua’s “Michael,” 10-year-old Jackson (Juliano Valdi), on his way to stardom, is advised by Motown founder Berry Gordy (Larenz Tate) to say he’s 8 years old. “In this business you can make up just about anything,” Gordy says. Maybe that line introduced a theme in some earlier draft of John Logan’s screenplay; the initial version of the film, for which Jackson’s executors serve as producers, used as its framing device the 1993 allegations of child sexual abuse against the singer, aiming to exonerate him of those charges. Implicitly, that would suggest those charges — and by extension, subsequent allegations — were made up, too.
In fact, they shot that version of that film. Then, the estate’s lawyers realized the terms of the settlement with the accuser prohibited them from releasing it. So this version of “Michael” is a rewritten, reshot version, with a new third act and a new gist. It’s now an uplifting tale about Jackson’s triumph over his father, Joe Jackson (a gruff Colman Domingo). You can feel that late-breaking

scramble in the film, especially in a clunky few final scenes. It’s now a case study about a young person differentiating himself from his family of origin, wrapped up in fairy-tale trappings, complete with a happily-ever-after ending.
And it’s a standard-issue musician biopic, so familiar you can plot it in your sleep. Begin with the opening shot of the star — from behind, of course — walking down a corridor toward some stage, from which we can hear a screaming audience. Pause for a moment as the lights get brighter. Then flash back to his childhood, in Gary, Indiana, where he lives in a tiny home with his overbearing father, his mother, Katherine (Nia Long), his brothers Jermaine (Jayden Harville), Marlon (Jaylen Lyndon Hunter), Tito (Judah

Edwards) and Jackie (Nathaniel Logan McIntyre), and his sister LaToya (Amaya Mendoza). (Jackson’s brother Randy and sisters Rebbie and Janet — the three Jackson siblings who are not executive producers on the film — are, curiously, not characters in it either.)
Watch as Joe drives his sons relentlessly to perform, whipping Michael with his belt when he isn’t perfect. Watch them become stars. Watch them grow up, but stay in Joe Jackson’s now-palatial home. (Jamal Henderson, Tre’ Horton, Rhyan Hill and Joseph David-Jones play the brothers as adults, while Jessica Sula plays the older LaToya. )
Watch Michael (now played by Jaafar Jackson, the son of Jermaine Jackson) struggle to find his place in the world. Saddled with immense talent but certain he is not like other people, he has only his mother, his bodyguard Bill (KeiLyn Durrel Jones) and eventually his lawyer John Branca (Miles Teller) for friends. (Branca is also one of the film’s producers.)
Now the movie gets mushy, and weirdly vague. “Michael” has some of what makes this kind of movie appealing — spectacular songs, recreations of legendary performances — but it lacks certain crucial elements, like the moment when the struggling artist finally gets the song to come together. This Michael arrives almost fully formed, and his songs pop out apparently without a problem. The hardest thing he has to do, outside his family unit, is figure out which track makes the best title, or get MTV to play “Billie Jean,” which only really takes one phone call.
“Michael” portrays its subject as a kind of otherworldly angel who, when he acts oddly, has been goaded into it by his father. He gets a chimp, Bubbles, to be his friend, but maybe also to protect Michael from Joe’s temper. When he gets plastic surgery on his nose, it’s either because Joe made him believe he has to be perfect, or because his nose looks too much like Joe’s. He wants to be the biggest star in the world, but seems entirely free of ego: It’s just that stardom is his way out from under Joe’s thumb.
And of course, Michael never got to be a kid, really, because Joe took that away from him. So as an adult, he is always seeking out children. But the movie knows what you’ll think, instantly, about that. So there are many scenes — many scenes — in which he visits children in hospitals to distribute toys and comfort, and is observed from a doorway by someone else, who gently smiles.
This Michael is flat, barely human. Hagiography is the standard mode in which all estate-involved biographical movies work, documentary and fiction alike, the implication being that audiences can’t handle any hint that a figure might not be a saint, or at least a saintly victim. The notion that a human — someone who gets angry or bitter or has a bit of an ego on them — is inherently easier to relate to, far more believable and ultimately more lovable, seems lost on most filmmakers.
Here, what we are left with is a string of musical set pieces, like a greatest hits album, performed ably by the stars — in his debut role, Jaafar Jackson dances like he is possessed by his uncle’s talent — but strung together in repetitive false-note ways that are insulting both to audience and subject.
The three-ring media circus that surrounds every celebrity gives us versions of them we can choose to believe in. “Michael” aims to deliver a version of Michael Jackson that, strangely enough, conforms to what the movie’s version of Joe Jackson wanted all along: a perfect child, a top-notch performer and certainly nothing more than that. In this business, you can make up just about anything.
‘Michael’: Rated PG-13 for scenes of beating a child with a belt, a perilous stage fire and some bad language, mostly from a record executive. Running time: 2 hours 7 minutes. In theaters.
son, around 17% of S&P 500 companies reporting results between January and March mentioned concerns about energy prices.

Wall Street has roared back to record highs even as uncertainty over the conflict in Iran lingers, a risk highlighted by a steady drumbeat of CEO warnings about the economic toll of a prolonged period of high oil prices.
The reason? Stocks look cheap. The S&P 500 is trading at the equivalent of 20.8 times its constituents’ expected earnings over the next 12 months. That price/earnings ratio is near its lowest in a year, suggesting U.S. stocks are a better buy now than at the start of 2026, when the benchmark traded at over 22 times earnings.
“Investors and market participants are expecting the war with Iran to end relatively quickly, and so they are discounting the long-

On Tuesday, GE Aerospace CEO Larry Culp told Reuters the company would have raised its forecast if not for the current uncertainty, citing a strong first quarter and visibility into the second. The Ohio-based company said its outlook assumes a more cautious second half, including the risk that airlines scale back maintenance work, delay engine shipments and cut spending if activity weakens. GE shares fell 6%.
Despite the pullbacks in GE and a handful of other firms expressing caution, analysts and portfolio managers say stock buyers are taking comfort in how cheap the market looks, based in large part on expectations that earnings will surge this year.

term risk of the impact of the war. At the same time the U.S. consumer and economy continue to perform strongly,” said Oliver Pursche, senior vice president at Wealthspire Advisors in Westport, Connecticut.
Currently, the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed to oil tankers as a two-week ceasefire is set to expire, while Washington and Tehran appear far from an agreement to resolve the conflict.
About two-thirds of S&P 500 companies that have reported quarterly results since the start of April have voiced some degree of concern about energy prices during their analyst conference calls, according to a Reuters review of transcripts. By compari-
The valuation is set to be tested over the next few weeks as investors weigh whether rising profit estimates can hold up against concerns about high energy prices. The biggest potential risk “comes from the outcome of the war with Iran, particularly if consumer spending drops as higher energy prices and higher prices in general begin to sap consumer spending,” said Rick Meckler, a partner at Cherry Lane Investments in New Vernon, New Jersey. Potential supply chain disruptions could also hit earnings, he said.
The market’s modest P/E multiple is not the result of falling stock prices. Rather, analysts have rapidly increased their earnings expectations, largely because of optimism about artificial intelligence. Any widespread failure by companies to meet those high-bar forecasts could quickly make U.S. stocks look expensive, undermining a key support for the recent rally.
While the S&P 500 has gained about 4% year to date, expectations for 2026 year-over-year earnings growth have leapt from 16% in early January to almost 20% last week, according to data from LSEG I/B/E/S. Technology companies account for the bulk of that increase, along with energy and materials companies. Several companies reporting results in recent days have already flagged that high energy prices could impact their costs, demand for their products and the broad economy. Other heavy hitters reporting this week include Tesla, Intel, Procter & Gamble and American Express.
Delta Air Lines earlier this month cited soaring jet fuel prices as the company pulled all planned capacity growth for the current quarter and forecast profit below Wall Street expectations. Some companies noted the risk from high energy prices but said it was not yet a major concern. During its call, PepsiCo said it typically hedges energy-related costs through 6 to 12 months.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it had seized two cargo ships Wednesday near the contested Strait of Hormuz, Iranian news media reported, adding uncertainty to a ceasefire President Donald Trump extended Tuesday hours before it would have expired.
The reported attacks — which come as the U.S. Navy has prevented dozens of ships from accessing Iranian ports — showed that despite efforts to turn the pause in direct hostilities into a lasting peace, neither Iran nor the United States was shying away from trying to exert control over movement in and around the strategic waterway.
Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, downplayed the Iranian ship seizures Wednesday, telling Fox News that Trump did not view those actions as a violation of the ceasefire. Her comments seemed to indicate that Iran’s actions were not a deal-breaker as efforts to revive peace talks continued. “These were not U.S. ships. These were not Israeli ships,” she said.
Iranian news media reported that the Guard had targeted the two cargo vessels, the MSC Francesca and the Epaminondas, a Greek-owned ship, because

they had not abided by Iran’s recently imposed rules for passing through the strait, which include permits for preapproved routes.

Iranians crossing the country’s border with Turkey on Wednesday expressed widely differing views on the war, the ceasefire, and their government, but all voiced deep concern over an economic crisis they said was unfolding in the country.
At the Kapikoy border crossing in eastern Turkey, Moji, 38, was returning to Iran after several months in Europe. She had been under constant stress while away, she said, and worried about her family back in Iran who live in Urmia, close to the Turkish border. Like many of the Iranians who spoke to The New York Times, Moji declined to give her full name, for fear of reprisal by the Iranian government. Oth-
suggested that both ships were now anchored around 8 miles off the Iranian coast.
Several Iranian news media outlets had reported earlier that the Guard had fired on a third cargo ship, the Euphoria. Tracking data showed the ship stopping multiple times and changing directions abruptly as it passed through the strait.
There was no clear indication
Wednesday that either the U.S. or Iran was willing to back down from their public hard-line stances on the strait or other issues that divide them, creating what amounted to a deadlock over the conditions for a new round of peace talks.
Here’s what else we are covering:
— War powers vote: For a fifth time, the U.S. Senate will vote Wednesday afternoon on a resolution to enforce Congress’ war powers, with Democrats once again pushing Republicans to join their effort to constrain Trump’s war on Iran. A decades-old law allows the president to wage war without congressional approval for 60 days; that window would expire May 1.
— Iran border crossing: After entering Turkey, Iranians belonging to different political persuasions and from parts of the country told The New York Times that they were fleeing a deepening economic crisis at home.
— Iraq: The United States, in part of a vigorous pressure campaign on the government in Baghdad to distance itself from Iran, halted dollar shipments to the country in a move that could hobble its cash-based economy.
— Lebanon: An exchange of attacks along the Israeli-Lebanese border on Wednesday put pressure on the countries’ already tenuous truce.
ers refused to be identified entirely.
Many people at the border crossing did not want to speak to a reporter at all, or spoke only briefly. Several people said in interviews that they feared punishment by the state for expressing their views.
Moji said that while she was abroad an airstrike had struck near her parents’ home. Her friends in Urmia increasingly struggled to afford food, Moji said, because there was no work to be found and factories had been forced to close amid the strikes.
One couple, a husband and wife who work as garment makers, said the economic problems preceded the war, and they routinely went without work for over half the year. Another woman said that layoffs were increasing,
and that her hopes were not that Iran became a democracy, but simply had a ruler who could create jobs and bring security to the country.
Milad, 37, from the city of Khoy in western Iran, was traveling to Turkey for a short family vacation. He expressed support for the Iranian government and its military performance during the war. “For us to persevere before a bully like this, it’s really a great thing,” he said, referring to the United States.
Milad pulled out his maroon-colored Iranian passport, saying that, in the past, when he showed it at border crossings, he was treated with disrespect, he said. “Not anymore,” he said. “Now they know what we are.”
One woman from the Iranian city of Tabriz, who crossed the border into Turkey on
Wednesday to see her daughter, said that she hoped negotiations between Iran and the United States would ultimately fail. She implied that the war should continue so that the Iranian government would fall.
Moji, who was heading to see her family in Urmia, said she was glad the ceasefire had been extended, seeing it as relief for people who had been under intense pressure for months, starting with the deadly crackdown on protests in January and, after that, the war.
“Everyone wants something better to happen,” she said. “But unfortunately the path that unfolds for our people is not the right path and, in the end, that which should happen, doesn’t happen. People just suffer more mentally and have to pull back financially.”

After halting a U.S. resettlement program for Afghans who helped the American war effort, President Donald Trump is in talks to send as many as 1,100 of them to Congo, an aid worker briefed on the plan said earlier this week.
The group includes interpreters for the U.S. military, former members of the Afghan Special Operations forces and family members of American service members. More than 400 children are among them.

After halting a U.S. resettlement program for Afghans who helped the American war effort, President Donald Trump is in talks to send as many as 1,100 of them to the Democratic Republic of Congo, an aid worker briefed on the plan said Tuesday, April 21, 2026. (Guerchom Ndebo/The New York Times)
The Afghans have been living in limbo in Qatar for more than a year. They were taken there after being evacuated by the United States for their own safety because they supported U.S. forces during the war against the Taliban that began in 2001.
Shawn VanDiver, president of the aid group AfghanEvac, said he had been briefed on the Congo plan by State Department officials. He said that the Afghans would be given a choice between returning to live under the Taliban or being sent to Congo, which is suffering one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
More than 600,000 refugees, mostly from the Central African Republic and Rwanda, are currently in Congo, according to the United Nations. Human rights activists say the country is not equipped to take in more in the midst of fighting with neighboring Rwanda that has displaced even more people because of attacks on refugee camps.
“We think this is just them wanting to send these people back to Afghanistan, where they know they will face certain death. They know that Afghans are not going to accept the DRC,” VanDiver said, using an abbreviation for the Democratic Republic of Congo. “Why would you go from the world’s No. 1 refugee crisis to the world’s No. 2 refugee crisis?”
The discussions highlight the longstanding tension between America’s obligation to Afghans, who face grave danger in retaliation for helping U.S. forces during the war, and the Trump administration’s pledge to curtail immigration.
Much is unknown about the plans taking shape, including whether all the Afghans would go to Congo or whether deals
were coming together in other countries. Negotiations like this have stalled before.
A Congolese government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. Tommy Pigott, a State Department spokesperson, accused the Biden administration of moving hastily in bringing Afghan allies to the United States. He said the Trump administration was working to find options for the remaining Afghans.
“The American people have had to pay the price for the irresponsible way hundreds of thousands of Afghans were brought into the United States,” he said. “Our focus now is on restoring accountability by advancing responsible, voluntary resettlement options.”
U.S. diplomats have been asking countries in Africa to take in the Afghans for months. But talks fell apart in many places, according to VanDiver and diplomats with knowledge of the discussions.
More than 190,000 Afghans who aided the U.S. effort resettled in the U.S. between August 2021 and mid-2025, after passing background checks.
But a group of more than 1,100 Afghans are being housed in a former U.S. military base in Qatar known as Camp As Sayliyah. The U.S. government brought them there in late 2024 and promised them a path to settlement in the United States if they passed further checks.
Qatar was intended as a stopover, but many of the Afghans found themselves in limbo after the Trump administration ended policies that would have enabled them to resettle in the U.S.
“They had the expectation that within weeks they’d be relocated to the U.S.,” said Rina Amiri, a former senior diplomat working on Afghan human rights issues. “Who is going to fight alongside the U.S. when the U.S. betrays the people who stood alongside us?”
The Congo negotiations follow behind-the-scenes pressure from the Qatari government to find the remaining Afghan refugees a new home.
Some of the people left at the camp have been fully vetted; others have not, VanDiver said. But Trump’s immigration policies have made it impossible for any of them to come to the United States now. In November, the government froze the special visa program after a National Guard member was shot in Washington last year by an Afghan man allowed into the United States after the Taliban took power again. In January, the administration said that it would close the transit camp without saying what would happen to the people there.
Many of the Afghans in Doha have told officials that they would not voluntarily agree to being sent to Congo, according to a person familiar with the planning, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe confidential discussions. Some Afghans questioned whether they would be protected there. Others asked why they would go to Congo when their loved ones are in the United States.
Andrew Sullivan, a military veteran
and the executive director of No One Left Behind, a nonprofit group that has been working to resettle Afghans to America, said some had been deemed ineligible for reasons that have nothing to do with national security. For example, one woman turned 21 and is no longer eligible to be included on her father’s visa, he said.
But, he said, the administration has other options available to bring them to the United States, including the ability to issue exemptions to the policy.
“Our belief is that if, if they can pass security vetting, they should be coming to the United States,” Sullivan said. “If they can’t, and they’re not going to come to the United States, I do believe the U.S. government has an obligation to ensure that they’re going to a third country where they’re going to be secure, they’re going to be supported, and there aren’t ongoing humanitarian rights issues.”
U.S. diplomats have been meeting with Congo officials for months. Recently, the Trump administration struck an agreement with the country to accept migrants from other countries who face deportation from the United States. Part of that deal included a $50 million grant to the U.N. refugee agency to provide assistance in the country.
Discussions over the Afghans are separate from the deportation deal, but both are examples of what has become a hallmark of Trump’s immigration strategy: moving people to faraway places, even when those countries have human rights abuses or authoritarian governments.

Kevin Warsh, President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Federal Reserve, asserted repeatedly at a combative confirmation hearing earlier this week that he would not cut interest rates simply because Trump wanted him to, pledging to be “strictly independent” if confirmed for one of the world’s most powerful economic positions.
In sometimes testy exchanges before the Senate Banking Committee, Warsh, 56, sought to dispel doubts around his credibility, saying Trump had “never asked me to predetermine, commit, fix, decide on any interest rate decision in any of our discussions, nor would I ever agree to do so.”
He was repeatedly asked if he would function as a “sock puppet” for Trump, who has demanded lower rates from the Fed and attacked the institution’s top leadership for failing to cut them aggressively enough. Just hours before the hearing, Trump said in an interview
with CNBC that he would be “disappointed” if Warsh did not reduce borrowing costs once confirmed as Fed chair.
Warsh, who served as a Fed governor from 2006 to 2011, said he would remain independent. In his opening statement, he said that central bankers must be “strong enough to listen to a diversity of views from all corners, humble enough to be open-minded to new ideas and new economic developments, wise enough to translate imperfect data into meaningful insight and dedicated enough to make judgments faithfully and wisely.”
But as several lawmakers on Tuesday noted, Trump’s broadsides against the Fed have gone well beyond just verbal arguments. He is in the midst of trying to remove Lisa Cook, a governor appointed by the Biden administration, from her position over unsubstantiated allegations of mortgage fraud. The Supreme Court has yet to rule on the case, but so far the justices seem wary about allowing Cook’s ousting to hold given, concerns about the Fed’s

independence.
The Justice Department has also initiated a criminal investigation into the current chair, Jerome Powell, and his handling of renovations at the Fed’s headquarters in Washington, which has thrown a wrench into Warsh’s ability to get confirmed before Powell’s term as chair ends May 15.
That’s because Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, a Republican on the Banking Committee, has vowed to block any attempt to confirm a new Fed chair until the legal threats against Powell are resolved.
While Tillis said he believed Warsh was qualified for the job, he has blasted the investigation as a blatant attempt to coerce Powell into lowering rates, undermining the Fed’s independence and confirming the politicization of the Justice Department.
“The problem that I have here is that we had some U.S. attorney with a dream, or assistant U.S. attorney, thinking it would be cute to bring Chair Powell under an investigation just a few months before the position was going to be open,” Tillis said Tuesday.
“Let’s get rid of this investigation so I can support your nomination,” he added.
Trump on Tuesday showed no indication that he wanted the Justice Department to drop the investigation, despite numerous legal
setbacks. “You have to find out why a thing like that could happen,” he said of the central bank’s renovations. “I’m afraid Kevin will have to have an office next to me in the White House, because that building is not going to be done.”
Powell has said he will stay on as chair on a temporary basis if Warsh is not confirmed by May 15. He has yet to disclose whether he will stay on as a governor, as he can do until 2028.
Warsh also came under fire from Democrats, who questioned his shifting views on inflation. While at the Fed over a decade ago, Warsh was known as an inflation hawk, who often argued against lowering rates for fear that it could stoke price pressures.
While campaigning to be chair, Warsh embraced the need for rate cuts, arguing that there was a path for lower borrowing costs because of his plans to shrink the Fed’s holdings of Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities. That would likely lead to higher longterm rates that then could be offset by lowering the short-term rates that the Fed controls, he has said. Warsh also argued that higher productivity from the boom in artificial intelligence could unleash higher growth without stoking inflation, which could give the Fed more space to lower rates than otherwise would be the case.
Warsh reiterated those arguments Tuesday, despite some pushback from lawmakers, including Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., who described promises of AI-driven productivity gains as “hype” from people trying to drum up interest for their coming initial public offerings.
Warsh repeatedly made clear Tuesday that he views any overshoot of inflation as the Fed’s fault, as he criticized the central bank for missing its 2% inflation target since the pandemic.
“That’s an indication that the Fed missed its mark, and we are still dealing with the legacy of the policy errors in 2021 and 2022,” said Warsh, referring to a period in which policymakers were slow to respond to mounting price pressure caused by gummed-up supply chains and a series of economic rescue packages from the government. “Once you let inflation take hold in the economy, it’s more expensive and harder to bring it down.”
On Tuesday, he pushed back on the idea that tariffs had worsened inflation and said the Fed needed “regime change in the conduct of policy. It means a new and different inflation framework.”

Demandante V. BANCO POPULAR DE PUERTO RICO; JOHN DOE & RICHARD ROE

It’s not that the New York Mets have needed any help from Zohran Mamdani to lose games. But for some fans, there was something fishy about the timing.
On April 9, the team’s mascots, Mr. and Mrs. Met, greeted Mayor Mamdani, a self-described casual fan, at Citi Field. The scene was cozy. Mr. and Mrs. Met jumped and waved their arms. She swooned, he placed an oversized cap on the mayor’s head, and Mamdani beamed so hard it looked like his cheeks might snap.
In the 12 days since, the Mets haven’t won a game. Torment has given way to blame. Some fans, particularly those already antagonistic to Mamdani, seized on his embrace of the mascots as signs of a curse.
After the Mets lost their 11th consecutive game Sunday, The New York Post declared on its front page that the Mets were suffering from “The Curse of the Mambino.” At a news conference Tuesday, before the Mets dropped their 12th straight, 5-3 to the Minnesota Twins at home, Mamdani faced the question: Is there anything he can do to reverse the curse?
“I am still keeping the faith,” Mamdani said. “As I know many Mets fans are across the city.”
Baseball is made for heartbreak and superstition, a game of waiting and praying, in which fans are quick to pin losses not on injuries or poorly assembled rosters but instead on higher powers. Like God, or City Hall.
Mets fans have a particular penchant for grief. It’s the awful, decades-old condition of supporting the team, of keeping faith in the face of games designed to break it. Holding on, against all evidence, to moronically maniacal hope. There’s a reason it’s hard to say the words “Mets fan” without the modifier “longsuffering.”
Some die-hard fans argue that the stakes of a Mets victory are higher for the mayor than for his predecessors. Mamdani was catapulted into office by a wave of supporters who, some have argued, fit squarely in the demographic of the stereotypical Mets fan: laptop-toting professionals, transplants who set up shop in Brooklyn and needed a casual sports affiliation to prove their New York bona fides, naturally landing on the underdogs.
“If you go through the Commie Corridor, you’re going to see

The New York Mets, losers of 12 straight going into Wednesday night’s game against the Minnesota Twins, face very real on-the-field challenges. As of Tuesday, they’d scored fewer than three runs in nine games. In five games, they’d given up more than seven runs. (Instagram via betmgm)
a lot of Mets hats,” said A.M. Gittlitz, author of “Metropolitans: New York Baseball, Class Struggle, and the People’s Team.”
“They represent Mamdani’s vibe,” said former Mayor Bill de Blasio. “The Yankees are like the global elite.” (Not to mention that the Yankees are the team of Rudy Giuliani and President Donald Trump, who visited their clubhouse last year.)

sorbing blame for the city’s woes and was famously held responsible for a dead groundhog. “There’s a famous Ed Koch quote, ‘If a sparrow dies in Central Park, it’s the mayor’s fault.’”
Justin Brannan, a former New York City politician, agreed that there’s a spiritual alliance between the Mets and Mamdani’s base.
“Everyone doubted Zohran and now he’s the mayor — they should do the same thing with the Mets,” Brannan said. “Look, anyone who thinks 11 losses in a row is the lowest point obviously hasn’t been a Mets fan for very long.”
Of course, the Mets face very real on-the-field challenges. They’ve scored fewer than three runs in nine games. In five games, they’ve given up more than seven runs. Juan Soto, their star outfielder who was signed to a 15-year, $765 million contract in late 2024, is injured; Bo Bichette, who signed a threeyear, $126 million contract this offseason, has underperformed.
And for what it’s worth, City Hall officials pointed out that the Mets’ losing streak started the day before the notorious hug.
Sid Rosenberg, the conservative radio host, is unpersuaded. He is so convinced that Mamdani doomed the Mets that he said he has flipped allegiance to the Yankees. “The hug is what started this curse,” he said. “It’s not an opinion, it’s a fact.”
Todd Shapiro, the spokesperson for former Mayor Eric Adams and an ardent Mets fan, knows better than most how things can suddenly run bad. He suggested the new mayor should consider hugging the Yankees to transfer the curse, though he’s skeptical that the mayor’s embrace of Mr. Met was all that ruinous.
“There was the Tony Romo curse — every time Jessica Simpson would show up to a game, Tony Romo would lose,” Shapiro said, referring to a rumored curse suffered by the Dallas Cowboys quarterback nearly 20 years ago. “I’m telling you, the mayor is not Jessica Simpson.”
That remains to be seen.
Large cardboard cutouts of New York Knicks players were placed in the City Hall rotunda Monday, to reflect Mamdani’s devotion to the team as it enters the playoffs. Hours later, the Knicks were upset in Game 2 in their series against the Atlanta Hawks.
De Blasio, a Celtics fan, remained unconcerned. He thought Mamdani might be able to help with a hug. “I think he could bring good luck to the Knicks,” de Blasio said.
