Governor declares Tuesday a day of mourning for Dorado mayor

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón has declared this Tuesday as a day of mourning in honor of Dorado Mayor Carlos López Rivera, who died Friday.

“In light of the announcement regarding the funeral date for Mayor Carlos ‘Carlitos’ López Rivera, I have decreed this day as a Day of Mourning,” the governor stated in a written announcement. “All public facilities are required to fly their flags at half-staff.”

López Rivera’s wake will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday in Dorado’s Public Plaza, as announced by Interim Mayor Aníbal José Torres. López Rivera died of liver cancer after serving the northern coastal municipality for some 38 years.

“At the ceremony, several individuals chosen by the mayor will speak to the public, including church leaders, colleagues from the Autonomous Municipality of Dorado, and family members,” Torres noted during a press conference. “After the formal ceremony, we will embark on a walking tour as per the mayor’s wishes, starting from the public square in Dorado, with several designated stops.”

“The first stop will be at Jacinto López School, where the Municipal Band will perform a special song requested by the mayor while standing in front of the school. This school holds great significance, as it was acquired by the Dorado municipal government, and is where [López Rivera] attended and where his mother taught for many years,” the interim mayor said. “After this first stop, we will proceed to the Catholic Church located in the town area. The tour will conclude at the Dorado cemetery, where we will hold a Christian burial in accordance with the wishes expressed by Carlitos López.”

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón has declared Tuesday as a day of mourning in honor of Dorado Mayor Carlos López Rivera, who, Interim Mayor Aníbal José Torres noted, “dedicated more than four decades of his life to public service and the transformation of our municipality.”

Torres noted further that due to traffic issues in the municipality, the Gran Parque Agroturístico on highway PR-165 will serve as a transfer point.

The Puerto Rico Public-Private Partnerships Authority (P3A) has initiated a new procurement process to expand the island’s energy generation capacity by up to 3,000 megawatts (MW).

The move follows a pause by the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau — the island’s energy regulatory body — on the final two rounds of a six-phase procurement strategy. That initiative aimed to secure around 3,750 MW of renewable energy and 1,500 MW of storage. However, the early rounds saw limited interest, and the third round was scrapped due to pricing concerns. Only one contract emerged from the fourth round, launched in October 2024: a 50-MW battery storage project.

P3 Authority Executive Director Josué Colón Ortiz said the proposed capacity increase would effectively double Puerto Rico’s current energy output and facilitate more consistent maintenance

of existing infrastructure.

Economic Development and Commerce Secretary Sebastián Negrón Reichard emphasized the broader significance of the initiative.

“This request for proposals signals our readiness to collaborate and invest in essential infrastructure,” he said. “Expanding generation by up to 3,000 MW will not only bolster grid reliability but also will improve the island’s appeal to investors. It’s a strategic step toward economic development, manufacturing growth, and positioning Puerto Rico as a key location for reshoring. These efforts are vital for job creation, innovation, and building a resilient, competitive future.”

The process officially kicked off Friday with the release of a request for qualifications (RFQ). Proposals must include generation units totaling no more than 400 MW each. The RFQ also encourages flexibility, welcoming a range of reliable and dispatchable technologies that qualify as firm capacity.

PDP mayors present 5 proposals to mitigate loss of Equalization Fund, Inventory Tax

The leadership of the Puerto Rico Mayors Association presented five proposals on Sunday that, according to their estimates, would generate more than $600 million annually to offset the elimination of the Equalization Fund and the freezing (and possibly elimination) of the Inventory Tax.

“The proposals we are presenting to the country this morning are not for the municipalities, much less for the mayors,” Guayama Mayor O’brain Vázquez Molina, vice president of the association, said in a written statement. “They are proposals for you, the citizens who read, watch, or listen to us through the press or online.”

The first proposal is to set aside 15% of the auto inspection sticker (“marbete”) collection for the municipalities. Currently, all funds go to the Highways and Transportation Authority. The proposed measure would redirect part of those funds to municipal governments for the maintenance of local roads, services, and community works, projects that are essential in towns. It also recognizes that municipalities undertake the maintenance of many state highways without receiving sufficient resources.

The second proposal would, starting in the 2027-2028 fiscal year, exempt towns from the current obligation of municipalities to pay into the “Pay As You Go” system

for government pensions created by Law 106-2017. In short, municipalities currently contribute large sums to the central government’s pension system, limiting their ability to meet their other obligations. The measure seeks to alleviate municipal finances in the face of the elimination of the Equalization Fund and other fiscal burdens imposed by the Financial Oversight and Management Board, and also to ensure that municipal funds can be used for essential services to citizens.

The third proposal would have the 1.03% contribution on real and personal property, which is currently allocated to the central government’s General Fund, be transferred to municipalities through the Municipal Revenue Collections Center. Starting in the 2027-2028 fiscal year, funds would be distributed among municipalities according to the formula established in Act 53-2021 (Law to End Bankruptcy in Puerto Rico). Currently, this contribution is used to pay off the public debt, although it historically came from municipal funds and would represent more than $120 million annually in new revenue for municipalities.

The fourth proposal would exempt municipalities, beginning July 1, 2027, from making contributions to the central government Health Insurance Administration (ASES) under Act 72-1993. Currently, municipalities contribute millions of dollars

The Puerto Rico Mayors Association estimates that implementing the five proposals would generate more than $600 million annually to offset the elimination of the Equalization Fund and the freezing (and possible elimination) of the Inventory Tax.

annually to the state health plan, and the combined impact of ASES and Pay-Go is estimated to amount to $450 million annually. Beginning in 2027, municipalities would be exempt from this obligation, coinciding with the deadline for the elimination of the Inventory Tax.

The fifth proposal involves legislating concrete action to realize the imperative need to decentralize government work to

promote effective services to citizens. It requires amending and adding to the Puerto Rico Municipal Code so that under the public policy of decentralization, specific powers of the commonwealth government’s public agencies and instrumentalities are transferred to the municipalities and the corresponding budget is ensured by way of a cooperative decentralization model that functions within regulatory and accountability frameworks.

Published study reveals impact of 2023 heat waves in PR learning environments

The Caribbean Collaborative Action Network (CCAN) team is celebrating the publication of a new study in the Journal of Climate Health and Change that analyzed the effects of extreme heat on learning environments in Puerto Rico.

Conducted during the unprecedented heat waves of 2023, the study included a survey of students and school staff at schools without air conditioning. The findings revealed symptoms such as fatigue, irrationality, lack of attention, dizziness, and even hallucinations among those surveyed.

“Puerto Rico has experienced recent episodes of extreme heat that negatively impact multiple sectors of society, particularly students

and teachers,” said Pablo Méndez Lázaro, the principal investigator at UPR-Medical Sciences and a member of the CCAN and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) CAP/RISA Team, in a Linkedln post.

“This collaborative study highlights the frequent climate challenges faced by schools on the island.”

The research was carried out in partnership with academia, federal agencies, the island Education Department, and the Puerto Rico Teachers Federation, with support from the NOAA CAP/RISA program. The study aimed to understand the context, barriers, knowledge, risks, vulnerabilities, perceptions, employee profiles, attitudes and symptoms related to extreme heat in educational settings.

The analysis utilized a mixed-methods

approach that included earth observation data and geospatial analysis, an online survey for teachers, administrative staff, and other school employees from various educational settings, as well as participatory activities involving stakeholders, practitioners and decision-makers. The efforts led to co-production of knowledge and development of adaptation strategies.

Results indicated that 36% of schools were exposed to land surface temperatures exceeding 41.4°C (106.5°F), with the southern region showing the highest proportion (50.7%) of schools in high or critical risk areas that lacked adequate air conditioning infrastructure.

Additionally, a survey of 1,226 respondents revealed significant disparities in air conditioning availability, with only 17.28% of private schools and 2.93% of public schools

having adequate cooling. Students and staff in non-air-conditioned environments had significantly higher odds of experiencing heat-related symptoms. The most frequently reported symptoms included fatigue (OR=2.53), irrationality (OR=2.40), lack of attention (OR=2.14), and dizziness (OR=2.62; 95% CI: 1.91–3.65).

These findings, the researchers noted, underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions to improve learning environments and serve as a model for adaptation efforts in educational settings across tropical islands.

“Understanding the impact of heat on the population is critical for enhancing the quality of service provided by the National Weather Service to our community,” said Ernesto Morales, the risk coordinator at the NOAA National Weather Service San Juan.

House to hold hearing to assess $800 million LUMA-PREPA debt dispute

The island Legislature announced on Sunday that it will investigate whether the government has an $800 million debt with LUMA Energy that is causing financial issues for the private operator.

House Government Committee Chairman Víctor Parés Otero said he will summon LUMA Energy President & CEO Juan Saca, Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) Executive Director Mary Carmen Zapata and Energy Czar Josué Colón Ortiz. The officials must present all relevant documentation and evidence, under oath, regarding the multimillion-dollar debt claims made by LUMA executives in Puerto Rico.

Parés Otero has given Saca and the government officials one week to gather the necessary data and documentation. He said the hearing would take place sometime next week and emphasized that attendance by all three parties is mandatory and cannot be delegated.

“Over the past few weeks, LUMA Energy management has made serious accusations, claiming that PREPA is withholding over $780 million. They allege that this nonpayment,

which they say has persisted for more than a year, is primarily responsible for cutting nighttime brigade services and for the recent layoffs of 160 Puerto Rican workers,” the District 4 lawmaker noted. “The Energy Czar has denied the existence of this debt, as has PREPA’s executive director. We will bring all three of them together so they can present

their evidence to the people of Puerto Rico.”

“I want to make this very clear: Saca, Zapata, and Colón will be summoned in the coming hours,” Parés Otero added. “I am allowing them one week to gather all documents related to the disputed financial transactions between PREPA and LUMA. Their appearance cannot be delegated; they must attend and respond to questions from the representatives of the people.” LUMA has claimed to possess evidence supporting its assertions, though it has yet to present it. The private operator of the island’s electric power transmission and distribution system “will need to provide this evidence at the hearing next week, where we will evaluate it thoroughly,” the committee chairman said. “The government representatives will do the same. On that day, we will determine who is telling the truth.”

Last Friday, LUMA management announced the immediate dismissal of 160 workers, citing nonpayment by PREPA as the reason for the layoffs. STAR sources indicate that FTI Consulting has confirmed the existence of the debt. LUMA Energy has written to its suppliers blaming PREPA for delays in payment, which prompted a response from

PREPA on Saturday, stating that LUMA has failed to manage its funds adequately.

Since January, the House Government Committee has conducted four public hearings and an on-site inspection regarding LUMA Energy’s performance. The upcoming hearing will be the fifth and will specifically focus on financial transactions.

“The Energy Czar has confirmed, as noted by Eduardo Soria, executive director of the Puerto Rico Central Office for Recovery, Reconstruction, and Resilience (COR3) during a hearing held on September 22, that LUMA is not properly processing reimbursement requests for federal funds related to Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, as well as Fiona in 2022,” Parés Otero said. “Additionally, concerns have been raised about the excessively high compensation packages for LUMA’s executives. Regardless of the reasons behind the layoffs and the ongoing allegations of nonpayment, we will clarify these matters in a few days.”

According to official data, LUMA has some $9,085,390 million in debt, of which it has only requested repayment for $284 million by May 2025.

Fiscal board expresses concerns over LNG contract between NFE subsidiaries

The Financial Oversight and Management Board has expressed serious concerns over the liquefied natural gas (LNG) contract between New Fortress Energy (NFE) subsidiaries NF Energía and Genera PR, citing risks to energy security, transparency, and accountability.

It is the second time the oversight board has rejected the proposed contract for NFE to be the long-term supplier of natural gas to the island. The first time was in August. While acknowledging areas of improvement, the board emphasized that key issues must be addressed to protect the interests of Puerto Rico’s residents.

A central concern is the limited and conditional access to the San Juan Terminal for third-party LNG suppliers. Although the contract includes provisions for third-party access during specific circumstances, the oversight board argues that those are either currently unfeasible -- such as ship-to-ship transfers prohibited by the U.S. Coast Guard -- or subject to the seller’s discretion, rendering them ineffective in practice.

“As drafted, the Proposed Contract pro-

vides access to the terminal only under very limited circumstances,” the oversight board said in a letter dated Oct. 10. “Moreover, since ship to ship transfers are currently not authorized, this clause has no immediate effect. Puerto Rico’s access to LNG at the San Juan terminal is subject to the Seller’s discretion to negotiate with a third-party supplier when it is unable to fulfill its obligations.”

The urgency of the issue is underscored by the seller’s ongoing failure to supply LNG, forcing several power units to rely on more expensive diesel and reducing available generation capacity, the oversight board noted. The entity insists that the contract must allow Genera and the island government to bring in third-party suppliers during supply disruptions to safeguard Puerto Rico’s energy resilience.

Additionally, the board flagged potential conflicts of interest in the procurement and oversight process. Genera, a subsidiary of NFE, determines the LNG volumes in the contract of its sister subsidiary without independent validation by the government or the Third-Party Procurement Office (3PPO).

Given the contract’s “take or pay” structure, this could lead to ratepayers covering costs

for excess LNG, the entity noted.

The oversight board also criticized the lack of enforcement mechanisms. Under the current structure, Genera is solely responsible for holding the seller, NF Energía — even though the two entities are affiliated. The board cited an unresolved $17 million LNG shortfall claim, where the seller invoked

force majeure to avoid penalties. To ensure transparency and enforceability, the oversight board recommends that the Puerto Rico Public-Private Partnership Authority and PREPA be made parties to the contract. It calls for swift action from all stakeholders to revise the agreement and protect Puerto Rico’s energy future.

‘No more Trump!’: Protesters denouncing the president unite across the country

They were teachers and lawyers, military veterans and fired government employees. Children and grandmothers, students and retirees.

Arriving in droves across the country in major cities and small towns, they appeared in costumes, blared music, brandished signs, hoisted American flags and cheered at the honks of passing cars.

The vibe in most places was irreverent but peaceful and family-friendly. The purpose, however, was focused. Each crowd, everywhere, shared the same mantra: No kings.

Collectively, the daylong mass demonstration against the Trump administration on Saturday, held in thousands of locations, condemned a president that the protesters view as acting like a monarch.

Many had attended a similar event in June, but the months since had seen President Donald Trump make a dizzying array of changes in quick succession.

This time, the crowds included a new round of protesters, those who said they were outraged over immigration raids, the deployment of federal troops in cities, government layoffs, steep budget cuts, the chipping away of voting rights, the rollback of vaccine requirements, the reversal on treaties with tribes and the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill.

Many were also united in saying the administration needed to show basic humanity.

“We can argue and debate policies and ways that we can solve problems,” said Chris Scharman, a lawyer who attended a rally in Salt Lake City. “But we shouldn’t be debating the value of people.”

In major metropolitan areas, like Washington, D.C., the crowds were huge. A rally in Atlanta that drew thousands at one point covered three city blocks. A protest in San Francisco poured across five. One rally in Chicago stretched over 22.

Officials in New York said that more than 100,000 people demonstrated across all five boroughs of the city. One of the largest turnouts was in Times Square, where the streets were awash in a carnival-like atmosphere with flashy, flippant signs, one that announced “I Pledge Allegiance to No King.” Protesters sported the inflatable frog ensemble that activists in Portland, Oregon, began wearing to poke fun at the White House’s attempt to portray activists as anarchists or domestic terrorists.

“No more Trump!” the crowd chanted as they waved American flags.

“We’ve got to speak up for our rights, especially if we’re lucky enough to be citizens,” said Bianca Diaz, whose 6-yearold daughter, Luna, came dressed as an axolotl, a kind of salamander. “I wanted her to witness this,” Diaz said.

Known as No Kings Day, a follow-up to a demonstration in June, the events were scheduled at roughly 2,600 sites across all 50 states. They were organized by national and local groups and well-known progressive coalitions including Indivisible, 50501 and MoveOn.

The rallies came even as Trump’s approval ratings at the polls have not changed significantly. Republican leaders denounced the protests, blaming them for prolonging the

government shutdown and calling the event the “hate America rally.”

Trump’s political team trolled protesters on social media with AI-generated images of the president wearing a crown. When asked if the president had a comment on the demonstrations, Abigail Jackson, a White House spokesperson, gave a brief response in an email. “Who cares?” she said.

Diaz, 39, was one of those who did. She said she heard about the demonstration on TikTok and knew immediately that she would attend. A claims adjuster employed by the federal government, she has not been paid since the shutdown but said she supported the position of Democratic politicians who were pushing to keep health care costs down. A mass protest, she said, could be encouraging to leaders pursuing that goal.

“Protesting is the only way to get our voices out,” said Libby Smith, 17, who attended a rally in Pittsburgh. She said her plans to join the military after high school were deflated when Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary, fired a string of women leaders and said he wanted women out of combat roles.

Some 400 miles southwest

in Richmond, Kentucky, where Trump has handily won the past three general elections, protesters lined the sidewalk outside the local courthouse. A few drivers in passing cars jeered and shouted pro-Trump declarations, but others appeared to honk in support.

Protesters in Portland, where city and state leaders were fighting the president in court over his plans to deploy the National Guard there to address what he said was violence that was out of control, took part in three separate marches that eventually coalesced into one.

“We are out today to show people that this is not a war zone,” said Shawnathan Thibodeaux, 37, a middle school history teacher who attended with his wife and 4-year-old son. “The ultimate goal of describing this city that way is terrifying. We are peaceful and silly and still Portland.”

Although some rallies saw small groups of counterprotesters and a police presence, the mood at most was upbeat and festive. (Hours after a large rally ended in Los Angeles, about 100 protesters occupied an intersection before police officers in riot gear dispersed the crowd, police said.)

At a demonstration in Washington, children and families were prominent. In San Francisco, a crowd surrounded by farmers market vendors chanted, “Keep calm, keep marching!” At Grant Park in Chicago, thousands of attendees roared in applause as speakers took to the stage, including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, who urged demonstrators to reject the idea of a government with unlimited power.

Marilyn Ricken, 80, was in the crowd, having arrived with three friends, two of whom relied on walkers to move around.

Ricken, a retired insurance agent, had been at the No Kings rally in June but said Saturday’s event came with a deeper sense of urgency. “This is how change happens,” she said as nearby protesters signed their names at the bottom of a large replica of the U.S. Constitution.

Many protesters said they were heartened by meeting peers.

“You feel like your voice isn’t that loud,” said Michael Flanagan, 46, a medical administrator who attended a rally in Memphis, Tennessee, where the National Guard was recently deployed. “But I’ve never seen this level of enthusiasm.”

Santos’ release frustrates his former colleagues and constituents

In the hours after President Donald Trump’s announcement that he had commuted the prison sentence of George Santos, the disgraced former Republican member of Congress, New York politicians and some voters greeted the news with a mix of anger and frustration.

“George Santos is a convicted con artist,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., said in a statement Saturday. “That will forever be his legacy, and I disagree with the commutation.”

Robert Zimmerman, a Democrat who lost to Santos in a 2022 congressional race, said in a post on social media that “this decision demonstrates the lawlessness of the Trump administration.”

“Donald Trump is trying to put his political enemies in jail while he frees George Santos for the unconscionable crimes he committed,” he added.

Santos, 37, had been serving a seven-year sentence at a federal prison in New Jersey after pleading guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. He was released Friday night, after Trump announced in a social media post that he had cut the sentence short, citing their shared politics and his belief that the sentence had been excessive.

Santos’ release, which came amid a wave of clemency that the president has granted to his political allies and other right-wing figures, was the latest chapter in an improbable political career.

The former lawmaker from Long Island, once seen as a fresh face in Republican politics, suffered a swift fall from grace after reporting from The New York Times and other outlets exposed that he had fabricated much of his resume and background.

He was elected to the House. But as more revelations about Santos’ lies on the campaign trail came to light, his Republican colleagues in New York grew increasingly uneasy.

In January 2023, dozens of the state’s Republican officials, including four newly elected members of Congress, called on Santos to resign, breaking with Republican congressional leaders, who declined to remove him.

Santos was indicted in 2023 on charges that included wire fraud and money laundering. That winter, he became the sixth sitting member of the House to be expelled and the first to be removed without being convicted of a federal crime or supporting the Confederacy.

Some of Santos’ former Democratic constituents on Long Island called the commutation a slap in the face.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) during the third day of the speakership vote at Capitol Hill in Washington, on January 5, 2023. It took months of social media pleas, weekly dispatches in a small newspaper, handwritten letters from solitary confinement, entreaties from Republican allies and 84 days of prison time. lions, defrauded an election,” LaLota wrote. “He should devote the rest of his life to demonstrating remorse and making restitution to those he wronged.”

“The bottom line is that the Republican Party has really disrespected this district for years now and continues to,” said Jody Kass Finkel of Great Neck, founder of Concerned Citizens of NY-03, a left-leaning group that was created explicitly to advocate for Santos’ removal from Congress. The “silver lining is that we’re now organized, and we are not sitting down taking it,” she said.

Marc Sittenreich, who is from Port Washington and is affiliated with Concerned Citizens, said the commutation was an attack on the rule of law.

“We feel like in many ways he got his just deserts,” Sittenreich said Saturday. “Now we’re in a situation where if you’re with President Trump and you commit real crimes, you get off scot-free.”

Richard Osthoff, who had tangled with Santos in 2016, said he found the former lawmaker’s release “disgusting and sickening.”

Osthoff, a veteran living in New Jersey, was connected to Santos after Santos set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for a surgery that Osthoff’s dog required. But Osthoff said he never received those funds, and his dog eventually died. Santos denied any wrongdoing.

But some Republican critics of Santos’ stopped short of criticizing the president.

“I am proud that I was an early voice calling for Santos to resign from the House recognizing that his behavior was totally unacceptable,” Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County executive who has allied himself with Trump, said in a statement. “That said, critics of the commutation are the same ones who silently stood by while President Biden pardoned his son Hunter, Sen. Adam Schiff and Anthony Fauci.”

Joseph Cairo, the chair of the Nassau County Republican Committee who had previously called for Santos’ resignation and said that he had “disgraced” the House of Representatives, on Saturday issued a muted statement.

Osthoff said he felt that any justice that had been won when Santos went to prison had been undone by the commutation.

“I feel like I got personally stabbed in the gut by the president of the United States,” he said. “I don’t think he even realizes what George did, what he was guilty of.”

In a post on social media, Rep. Nick LaLota, a Republican from Long Island who was among the lawmakers leading calls for Santos’ removal in 2023, said that the former lawmaker’s crimes warranted more than the three-month term he had served.

“George Santos didn’t merely lie — he stole mil-

The committee was “united in calling for the expulsion of George Santos from the House of Representatives based on our shared belief that integrity, honesty and accountability are nonnegotiable standards for anyone seeking to serve the public,” the statement said. “Our focus remains on justifying the public’s confidence in government and ensuring that the Republican Party continues to stand for ethical leadership, transparency and service to the people.”

Former Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, a Republican who helped lead the effort to oust Santos and later lost his congressional seat, did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did Thomas Suozzi, the Democrat who now represents Santos’ former district.

On Saturday, many New Yorkers said they hoped more Republicans would take a firmer stand against Santos’ release.

“I think there will be widespread outrage,” said Kim Keiserman, a Democrat from Port Washington. “I just don’t know if that outrage will be bipartisan.”

Russia won’t stop until NATO acts NEW YORK TIMES EDITORIAL

Russia has launched a new and dangerous campaign of provocation against NATO. Over the past six weeks, it has sent drones over Poland and Romania and flown fighter jets into Estonia. Russia was also very likely behind drone flights that disrupted activity at airports in Denmark, Belgium and Germany. President Vladimir Putin has unconvincingly denied responsibility for all these acts and in fact seems happy for the world to believe Russia is behind them.

His goals are to scare, exhaust and divide Europeans, causing them to question their support for Ukraine and undermine its efforts to repel Russia’s invasion. Ultimately, he also wants to make the United States look weak and to fragment the NATO alliance. Responding wisely to him is vital for Washington and Europe. It is not easy. Striking back hard risks escalating conflict, while doing nothing conveys a weakness that invites future aggression.

NATO allies are aware that Russia is testing them and so far have done a good job of responding. They have denounced the incursions, forthrightly blamed Russia for them and met this month in Copenhagen in a show of unity. “We are not at war,” Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany said recently, “but we are no longer at peace either.”

There is more to do. European leaders should make clear that Russian aggression against NATO countries risks a forceful response, including the shooting down of drones — as the

West has already done — and potentially of Russian fighter planes that enter NATO airspace.

The United States and its NATO allies should also use the new Russian aggression as a reason to increase their support for Ukraine, sending the message that Putin’s attempt to weaken Western resolve has backfired. The visit on Friday of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine to the White House presented Trump with the opportunity to commit to new military and economic aid, and he should take it.

All these responses bring risks, including the dangers of escalation. By now, though, the world should know that there are no safe options with Putin. Ignoring or downplaying his aggressions encourages more of them. If he comes to believe that he can menace Poland, Estonia and other NATO members without consequence, he will become bolder about doing so.

“We must not only react, we must deter,” said Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president. “Because if we hesitate to act, the gray zone will only expand.” She is right. Sometimes, the best way to prevent military escalation is to draw a firm line.

The latest Russian provocations began on Sept. 9 with more than a dozen drones that crossed into Poland after having flown over Belarus and Ukraine. Five days later, a drone crossed into Romania, near two Romanian fighters on patrol. Five days after that, three Russian MiG jets flew into Estonia.

Then came a mysterious intrusion of civilian drones around commercial airports. The week after the Estonian incident, several drones flew near two airports in Denmark in what the country’s defense minister called a “hybrid attack,” and officials briefly closed the airports to avoid the risk of a crash. Drones later disrupted air travel in Belgium and Germany.

NATO responded well to these provocations. The MiGs over Estonia created the thorniest problem because they raised the prospect of a military confrontation between human pilots. But Swedish and Finnish pilots engaged with the MiGs, and the Russian pilots stood down, leaving Estonia escorted by the NATO planes. The response to the drones was even more aggressive. A combination of Polish, Dutch, Italian and German pilots intercepted the drones flying over Poland, shooting down several of them. In Romania, pilots tracked the Russian drone, and it left NATO airspace on its own.

One downside to destroying drones is that it can be expensive. Some of the missiles that NATO used cost $1 million, many times more than a drone. To address this problem, NATO should expand the production of armed drones, develop more effective electronic warfare defenses against them and fund research into other countermeasures. Russian aggression should serve as a reminder that warfare is changing and that defense industries must change with it.

As for future intrusions by piloted Russian jets, some Eastern European countries are arguing for loosening the rules for how and when NATO pilots can confront Russian jets that enter alliance airspace. A mix of caution and firmness is the best course. Nobody wants direct conflict between NATO and Russia, but history shows that the use of force can lead Putin to

pull back. In the mid-2010s, Russian jets sometimes flew over Turkey, and Turkey, a NATO member, told Russia to stop. Only after Turkey downed a jet did Russia retreat.

It is also important to respond in the theater that Putin cares about most: Ukraine. The incursions appear to have been partly a reaction to recent American equivocation. They came less than a month after an Alaska summit during which Putin succeeded in getting Trump to step back from his efforts to pressure Russia into accepting a ceasefire in Ukraine. Europe was rightly disappointed.

Still, if Putin thought that Alaska provided an opening to further divide the allies, he miscalculated. In response to the incursions, and perhaps thanks to the lack of diplomatic progress, Trump has expressed growing frustration. He said last month that Putin “has really let me down.” Trump also said that NATO planes should shoot down Russian aircraft that enter allied airspace and raised the possibility of new forms of support for Ukraine.

Already, he has authorized more intelligence sharing with Kyiv to heighten the effectiveness of its attacks, including those on Russian oil and gas facilities. Another option involves allowing Ukraine to get Tomahawk missiles. The missiles have a 1,000-mile range, and Ukraine could use them to strike deeper inside Russia.

Trump’s history of impulsiveness and his long record of coziness with Putin offer reasons to remain skeptical that this new posture will be a lasting one. On Thursday, the two leaders spent more than two hours on the phone together, and Trump described the conversation as “very productive.” They plan to follow up by meeting in Budapest soon.

That meeting will be an opportunity to draw a firm line. Russia’s recent aggression toward NATO shows that Russia’s war in Ukraine is about much more than Ukraine. It is about Putin’s revanchist ambitions in Europe. The only way to contain him is with resolute strength.

Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist of the hard-rock band Kiss, died Thursday in Morristown, New Jersey. He was 74.

A statement from his family said the cause of his death, in a hospital, was a recent fall at his home

Frehley, who often performed in white-andsilver face makeup as the group sold millions of records during his two tenures with it, from 1973 to 1982 and then from 1996 to 2002, was a consummate showman, like all the members of Kiss. He was known for playing guitars rigged with pyrotechnic effects and for his distinctive stage persona: He was known as “the Spaceman” or “Space Ace” because of the silver stars on his face. He also designed the band’s logo, with its lightning-bolt letters.

The other founding members of Kiss were guitarist Paul Stanley, drummer Peter Criss and bassist Gene Simmons, who was hospitalized this month after a car crash in Malibu, California. All four are slated to receive Kennedy Center Honors in December.

Many rock fans initially dismissed Kiss as gimmicky charlatans. Its members weren’t photographed without their stage makeup until 1983. But the band’s energetic and theatrical live shows built a following of teenagers, known as the Kiss Army. The band placed eight singles in the Top 40 during Frehley’s tenure, and he played on seven of them, including “Love Gun,” “Christine Sixteen” and “I Was Made for Loving You.” (He was absent from the band’s biggest chart hit, “Beth,” a ballad with orchestral backing that reached No. 7 on the Billboard chart in 1976.)

During Frehley’s time with Kiss, the band released 11 albums, both studio and live, that went gold or platinum in the United States. (Kiss

ultimately sold more than 100 million albums.)

With the passage of time and the enduring popularity of its party anthem “Rock and Roll All Nite,” the band saw its critical reputation improve; Kiss was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

Guitarist Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine inducted the band, making the case for Kiss’ influence on everyone from Metallica to Lady Gaga. Frehley, he said, “blazed unforgettable, timeless licks across their greatest records.”

Frehley himself bragged in a 2024 interview with the website Antihero that “out of the four founding members of Kiss, I definitely have been the most successful solo artist.” That was true largely because of his single “New York Groove,” a Top 20 hit with a stomping beat that is now played at Citi Field after every Mets victory.

“New York Groove” was the most successful single from a typically excessive Kiss stunt: In

1978, the four members all released solo albums simultaneously.

Paul Daniel Frehley was born in the New York City borough of the Bronx on April 27, 1951, the youngest of three children of Carl Frehley, an electrical engineer, and Esther (Hecht) Frehley.

Inspired by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, Paul began playing guitar at age 13; his parents gave him his first electric guitar as a Christmas present, hoping (unsuccessfully) that it would keep him out of trouble. He was given the nickname Ace when he was 16 by the drummer in one of his early bands, who admired Frehley’s ability to set him up with attractive dates.

In 1972, when he was 21 and still living at home, he spotted an ad in The Village Voice that read, “Lead guitarist wanted with flash and ability.” Reasoning that he fit the description, he auditioned for the band that would become known as Kiss. (His mother drove him to the audition.) When he got the gig, Frehley started using the name Ace full time to avoid confusion with Stanley.

Although Stanley and Simmons were the primary songwriters in Kiss, Frehley contributed some songs to the group’s repertoire, starting with “Cold Gin” on their debut album, which was released in 1974 and called simply “Kiss.” Uncertain about his own singing, he didn’t sing lead vocals until “Love Gun” (1977), the band’s sixth album, on which he sang his composition “Shock Me.”

He was the band’s most enthusiastic user of drugs and alcohol; Simmons, in contrast, was a lifelong teetotaler. In the 2003 book “Kiss: Behind the Mask,” an authorized biography by David Leaf and Ken Sharp, Stanley was quoted as saying that at times, “I don’t know if Ace knew the back side of his guitar to the front and it was probably due to ingesting certain liquids.”

Simmons added, “Ace’s judgments have been clouded since the beginning, and that’s being kind.”

In his 2011 memoir, “No Regrets” (written with Joe Layden and John Ostrosky), Frehley said that he became alienated from the band because of its increasing commercialism: “There were Kiss lunchboxes, Kiss action figures, Kiss makeup kits, Kiss dolls. You name it, we sold it.” He allowed that he did enjoy the money the group brought in — $100 million per year in the late 1970s, according to Frehley.

Criss left the band in 1980, and Frehley followed in 1982; Kiss continued with an array of replacements. Frehley pursued a solo career, releasing seven more albums under his own name and two with a group he called Frehley’s Comet. He and Criss rejoined Kiss in 1996 for a lucrative series of reunion tours. Frehley’s last show with the band was in Salt Lake City, at the closing ceremony for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Frehley claimed that his abuse of drugs and alcohol was exacerbated by Simmons and Stanley’s minimizing of his contributions to Kiss. On a 2024 episode of the podcast “Guitar Tales with Dave Cohen,” he said that he got sober in 2006 after “10 car accidents.”

He started dating Jeanette Trerotola when he was 18; they married in 1978. She survives him, as do their daughter, Monique; his brother, Charles; and his sister, Nancy Salvner.

Frehley valued both his ability and his flash. Speaking with Fuzz magazine in 1997, he suggested that if there were two guitarists of equal ability, one of whom leaps around onstage and the other of whom doesn’t, “Nine times out of 10 to an untrained ear in the audience, they’ll probably say that the guitar player who jumps around and stuff is the better musician.” He acted on that belief throughout his career: “To me,” he said, “image was very important.”

Global equity funds draw 4th weekly inflow on hopes of Fed rate cut

Global equity funds attracted inflows for a fourth straight week through October 15, as dovish comments from U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reinforced expectations that the central bank will cut interest rates at its meeting later this month.

Investor appetite, however, remained cautious amid renewed U.S.-China trade tensions after President Donald Trump indicatedhe may scale back certain trade ties with Beijing.

Investors bought a net $2.17 billion worth of global equity funds during the week in line with nearly $2 billion weekly net purchase the prior week, LSEG Lipper data showed.

The U.S. and Asian equity funds saw nearly $1 billion inflows each, while European funds had a net $1.62 billion weekly outflow which ended a 10-weeks-long trend of net purchases.

Equity sectoral funds, meanwhile, saw an uptick in demand as they received $6.61 billion, nearly a 50% rise from the previous week’s $4.39 billion net purchases.

Tech and healthcare sectors led the sectoral net investments as they received about $1.91 billion and $1.38 billion, respectively in weekly inflows.

Inflows into global bond funds, meanwhile, eased to a 16-week low as investors poured just $7.97 billion into these funds.

Demand for government bond funds, however, jumped to the highest in five months with a net $3.22 billion in weekly inflows. Investors also bought short-term bond funds of $2 billion but shed a net $1.08 billion worth of loan participation funds.

Investors, meanwhile, divested $6.72 billion worth of money market funds, partly liquidating prior week’s $64.46 billion net investments.

Gold and precious metals commodity funds drew $2.83 billion, the 20th weekly inflow in 21 weeks.

In emerging markets, investors ended their eight-weeklong buying streak with a net $1.04 billion weekly divestment. Bond funds, meanwhile, saw a net $2.38 billion weekly inflow, data for a combined 29,687 funds showed.

U.S. equity funds saw renewed demand in the week to October 15 as signals of further rate cuts from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and a solid start to the corporate earnings season eased concerns over trade tariffs and a government

shutdown.

LSEG data showed investors purchased a net $1.04 billion in U.S. equity funds, recouping nearly a quarter of the previous week’s $4.45 billion in outflows.

Stronger-than-expected quarterly results from Morgan Stanley and Bank of America also helped bolster risk sentiment following a week of withdrawals.

Investors pumped about $4.39 billion into U.S. sectoral funds, extending purchases into these funds to a fourth straight week.

They bought tech and financial sector funds of a notable of $1.18 billion and $920 million, respectively.

U.S. large-cap and small-cap fund segments, however, saw $2.42 billion and $114 million weekly outflows, while mid-cap funds saw a net $495 million weekly inflow.

Money market funds witnessed a net $20.98 billion outflow during the week that concluded a three-week trend of net inflows.

U.S. bond funds received a second successive weekly inflow to the tune of $6.49 billion.

Short-to-intermediate investment-grade funds, short-tointermediate government and treasury funds and municipal debt funds stood out as these funds received inflows of $2.13 billion, $890 million and $678 million, respectively.

Louvre closed after thieves steal ‘priceless’ jewels in brazen daylight robbery

Thieves made off with jewelry of “incalculable” value in a brazen daylight robbery on Sunday at the Louvre Museum in Paris, according to France’s interior minister.

The heist unfolded around 9:30 a.m. Laurent Nuñez, the interior minister, told France Inter radio that the thieves had used a lift mechanism on a truck — typically used to move furniture into Parisian apartments through the windows — to break into the Galerie d’Apollon, a second-floor wing of the museum.

The Apollon Gallery’s gilded hall holds the royal collection of gems and the crown diamonds, including “The Regent,” “The Sancy” and the “Hortensia.” The thieves broke into two display cases and snatched eight precious objects before fleeing on motor scooters with their loot — all within just seven minutes, according to Nuñez.

The jewels included a royal sapphire necklace and earring; a royal emerald necklace and earrings; and a diadem worn by Empress Eugénie, the wife of Napoleon III, who governed France from 1848 to 1870, according to a statement put out by the French Ministry of Culture.

“It’s a major robbery,” Nuñez said, adding that investigators believed that three or four thieves were involved and that the heist bore the hallmarks of an experienced team of veteran criminals given its precision and speed.

But in their haste to leave, the robbers dropped a crown worn by Empress Eugénie, which, according to the Louvre website, contains 212 pearls, 1,998 diamonds and 992 rosecut diamonds.

According to the French Culture Ministry, five museum staff were in the Apollon Gallery when the burglars broke in, sounding the security alarms. They applied the museum’s security protocol: contacting the police and “prioritizing the protection of people.”

Visitors had been inside the building for 30 minutes by then. Some panicked at first, worrying the building was experiencing a terrorist attack or a fire, said Joseph Sanchez, a tourist from Puerto Rico who was in line with family members waiting to see Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa when security guards began to shout for people to exit the room. They were kept in the museum’s lobby for more than an hour before being calmly evacuated, Sanchez said in an interview.

The French culture minister, Rachida Dati, said no one was injured in the heist.

The museum closed for the day, as “a security measure and to preserve traces and clues for the investigation,” according to a statement from the Louvre.

Members of the police and army were on the scene. The authorities said investigators were poring through evidence that included objects abandoned by the thieves and security camera footage.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said it had opened an investigation and that “the extent of the losses is currently being assessed.”

A former royal palace, the Louvre is the largest museum in the world. Its dizzying number of wings and courtyards hold more than 33,000 works of art, including many sculptures, paintings and antiques. Up to 30,000 people visit the museum each day — with so many crowding around the Mona Lisa that President Emmanuel Macron of France announced this year that a dedicated room and entrance will be built to house just that painting.

French museums have recently been hit by a string of thefts. Last week, four men were arrested after the President

Jacques Chirac Museum in the town of Corrèze was burgled by armed individuals wearing balaclavas. Less than 48 hours later, the museum was burglarized a second time, according to the French press.

In September, thieves stole nuggets of raw gold worth about $700,000 from the National Museum of Natural History, a few blocks from the Louvre. That same month, two porcelain dishes and a vase worth about 9.5 million euros, or $11 million, were stolen from the Adrien Dubouché museum in Limoges.

Arthur Brand, 56, a Dutch art crime expert, said in a telephone interview that he was unsurprised by the Louvre heist given the recent pattern. But entering France’s most important museum and stealing jewels, he said, “is the ultimate art heist, it’s like something out of a movie.”

There already have been a number of high-profile heists at the Louvre. During the summer of 1911, a museum employee stole the Mona Lisa. The employee, Vincenzo Peruggia, was arrested two years later while trying to sell the painting, and the Mona Lisa was returned to the museum.

In 1976, three burglars broke into the Louvre at dawn — climbing up a metal scaffolding and smashing windows on the second floor — and stole a 19th-century diamondstudded sword belonging to King Charles X of France. And in 1990, a painting by Pierre Auguste Renoir, “Portrait of a Seated Woman,” was cut from its frame and stolen from a third-floor gallery.

Museums in other countries across Europe also have been hit by thefts in recent years.

In 2019, thieves broke into the Royal Palace museum in Dresden, Germany, and stole more than 100 million euros’ worth of jewels (about $116 million). Most of the loot was later recovered as part of a plea deal.

Nuñez said Sunday that security at the Louvre had increased in recent years, and that it would be heightened further with the latest plans to overhaul the museum.

“But we can’t prevent everything,” he told France Inter.

US kills 3 on boat suspected of smuggling drugs for Colombian rebels

he U.S. military has killed three men and destroyed another boat it suspected of running drugs in the Caribbean Sea, this one alleged to have been affiliated with a Colombian insurgency group, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Sunday.

It was the seventh boat known to have been attacked since early September as part of the Trump administration’s use of the military to kill people suspected of smuggling drugs as if they were enemy soldiers in a war rather than arresting them as criminals. The latest strike took place Friday, and Hegseth said in a social media post Sunday that it targeted a vessel associated with the National Liberation Army, a Colombian rebel group known as the ELN.

So far, the Trump administration has acknowledged killing 32 people in the operation, whose legality has been widely disputed by outside legal specialists.

“The vessel was known by our intelligence to be involved in illicit narcotics smuggling, was traveling along a known narco-trafficking route, and was transporting substantial amounts of narcotics,” Hegseth wrote.

He did not provide evidence for his assertions. A 27-second aerial surveillance video that showed a boat on the water and then a fiery explosion accompanied the post.

The White House has told Congress that President Donald Trump has “determined” that the United States is in a formal armed conflict with various drug cartels that his team has deemed terrorists, making the boat crews “unlawful combatants.”

Sunday’s announcement was the first time the Trump administration has specifically described the ELN as a target of a strike. In previous attacks, the administration described the suspects as having ties to Tren de Aragua, a gang based in Venezuela, or no specific cartel.

The administration’s recent strategy of designating various Latin American drug cartels as terrorists has been disputed because the groups are motivated by profit, not ideology. But the ELN is different. It is a Marxist guerrilla group, and the State Department designated it a foreign terrorist organization in 1997, during the Clinton administration.

bian fisherman in a mid-September strike on a civilian boat; the United States claimed the boat was engaged in drug-running activity. On Sunday morning, Trump accused Petro of not doing enough to curb the production of illegal drugs in Colombia and said he was cutting off foreign aid to his country.

Trump also called Petro “an illegal drug leader strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs.” His administration has repeatedly called Petro’s counterpart in Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro, the head of a drug cartel, and is openly considering a military operation to remove Maduro from power.

“Petro, a low rated and very unpopular leader, with a fresh mouth toward America, better close up these killing fields immediately, or the United States will close them up for him, and it won’t be done nicely,” Trump wrote on social media Sunday morning.

The exchange also occurred a day after the United States repatriated a Colombian citizen who was rescued from a U.S. military attack Thursday on a semisubmersible vessel in the Caribbean. The man, Jeison Obando Pérez, 34, was hospitalized in Colombia with brain trauma and was breathing on a ventilator, Colombia’s interior minister, Armando Benedetti, said in a social media posting Saturday night. Once he is awake, the posting said, he will be “processed by the justice system for drug trafficking.”

Hegseth, a former Fox News host, also introduced new language in his announcement, referring to the drug cartels operating in the region as “the Al Qaeda of the Western Hemisphere.”

“These cartels are the Al Qaeda of the Western Hemisphere, using violence, murder and terrorism to impose their will, threaten our national security and poison our people,” he said. “The United States military will treat these organizations like the terrorists they are — they will be hunted, and killed, just like Al Qaeda.”

While that moniker echoed the names of actual regional affiliates of al-Qaida, such as “Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula,” it appeared to be an analogy; there is no such group in the Western Hemisphere.

Hegseth made the announcement soon after Trump had engaged in a new public dispute with Colombian President Gustavo Petro over social media.

On Saturday night, Petro accused the United States of murdering an innocent Colom-

After al-Qaida attacked the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, Congress authorized the use of military force against it, launching a long-running war against the terrorist group and its progeny. By contrast, Congress has not authorized any armed conflict against drug cartels or Marxist insurgents in Latin America who finance their operations with drug crimes.

An unlikely friendship powers the Dodgers’ pitching dominance

The two Los Angeles Dodgers starters Blake Snell and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are among the few to understand what it is like to dominate a league, with Snell claiming two Cy Young Awards and Yamamoto having three Sawamura Awards to his name in Japan. (Instagram snellzilla4, Facebook via MLB)

The ritual began in spring training, when Blake Snell sought out Yoshinobu Yamamoto at breakfast and pestered him about his craft.

Those breakfast chats became part of their daily routines. The two Los Angeles Dodgers starters are among the few to understand what it is like to dominate a league, with Snell claiming two Cy Young Awards and Yamamoto having three Sawamura Awards to his name in Japan.

So began a kinship that has led one of the greatest collections of starting pitching talents in recent postseason memory, with the two pushing each other each step of the way.

“Watching him succeed, there’s nothing better,” Snell said of Yamamoto at his locker last Tuesday, after the two etched their way into Dodgers postseason lore over two nights in Milwaukee. “It’s just so much fun.”

The two represent an odd couple. Snell is tall, lanky and left-handed with a viral high school rap video circulating on the internet. Yamamoto is the diminutive, nimble righthander who signed the richest deal ever for a pitcher, whose training ritual is the stuff of legend, and who showed up to American Family Field with his hair dyed black and giggled when talking about it. A language barrier represents a gulf between them. Still, the two have often been side by side, studying each other’s starts as they have dissected some of the game’s best lineups.

Film study should be going pretty well this week. A night after Snell turned in one of the finest postseason pitching performances in recent memory in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, Yamamoto responded by becoming the first Dodger to twirl a postseason complete game since José Lima 21 years ago.

Yamamoto allowed just one run against a Brewers team these two aces have utterly dominated. Snell and Yamamoto became the first Dodgers starters to go at least eight innings in consecutive postseason games since Orel Hershiser and Tim Belcher did so to open the

1988 NLCS against the New York Mets.

That team, memorably, won it all. Last year’s World Series champion Dodgers won despite their starting pitching. Now, in a tribute to the organization’s rich pitching history, their pursuit of a second consecutive title hinges largely on their dynamic starters from Snell to Yamamoto to Tyler Glasnow and Shohei Ohtani.

“When you can have your most talented pitchers get the most outs, then you’re in a good spot,” manager Dave Roberts said.

Snell became the first pitcher since Don Larsen in the 1956 World Series to face the minimum through eight innings. When he returned to the dugout after his final inning of work, Yamamoto greeted him with a bow.

Then, in Game 2, it was Yamamoto’s turn to work deep into the game.

Jackson Chourio jumped all over the first fastball he threw, launching it into the rightfield seats for a leadoff home run. But Chourio would be the only Brewer all night who would so much as touch second base.

Yamamoto allowed just three hits and a walk over his nine innings, with one other batter reaching on an error. He retired the final 14 batters he faced, exuding so much control over the game that Roberts never even considered sitting Yamamoto for the ninth inning.

It had been exactly eight years since there had been a complete game in the postseason, when Justin Verlander went nine innings and allowed just one run against the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. Yamamoto joined him with his 111th pitch, a total that spoke to his supreme efficiency.

“That’s probably the two best back-to-back games pitched ever, that I’ve seen,” said Will Smith, who was behind the plate both nights. “Just glad they’re on our side.”

The Dodgers have spoken often this season about the confidence that has come in Yamamoto’s second season in the majors, and the trust that has been created. It also doesn’t hurt that he has been able to lean on Snell.

Which made Snell all the more excited to talk about him on Tuesday.

“Seeing the way it started, a home run, it can rattle you,” Snell said. “But he stayed poised, understood. The way he attacked them afterward was great. He learned from it. So that was awesome to see. It’s fun to see him just learn, game plan, and go through the game and get better and better. He’s just evolving really quickly, and it’s a lot of fun to watch.”

It didn’t take much for Snell to lay out what he saw in Yamamoto, the prime free-agent pitching prize the year before the Dodgers

shelled out for Snell.

“He has good energy, was easy to love and cheer for and root for,” Snell said.

The two bonded quickly over baseball. “And fashion,” Snell added. They had breakfast each morning together at the organization’s Arizona spring training complex. Yamamoto’s English improved enough in his second year that the brief conversations have evolved.

“At the personal level, I get to learn a lot from him,” Yamamoto said through his interpreter, Yoshihiro Sonoda. “After my outings, we kind of review together the game I pitched through. He tells me what he sees. And I think that’s great for me.”

The pairing has done wonders already. Now, after the Dodgers completed the sweep of Milwaukee on Friday, the ritual is part of the preparation for a World Series.

The other quarterfinals were to continue Sunday night with the Pollitas of Isabela (1-0) visiting the Criollas of Caguas (0-1), and the Explosivas of Moca (0-1) facing the Ganaderas of Hatillo (1-0) at Raymond Dalmau Coliseum in Quebradillas.

At Domingo “Lulo” González Court in Carolina, the Big Sisters won by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-18, a result that allowed them to regain fifth place in the standings with a 6-4 record and 17 accumulated points. The Vaqueras, meanwhile, dropped to sixth place with a 4-4 record and 14 points. Meanwhile, on the Bo.
