GOOD MORNING

The San Juan Daily Star, the only paper with News Service in English in Puerto Rico, publishes 7 days a week, with a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday edition, along with a Weekend Edition to cover Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Memorial Day ceremony to honor Borinqueneers, fallen service members

The Puerto Rico Convention Center District Authority will hold a solemn Memorial Day ceremony today at the Antiguo Casino in Old San Juan, honoring the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

The event, led by the authority and its executive director, Verónica Ferraiuoli Hornedo, seeks to create a space for remembrance, reflection and gratitude for generations of soldiers whose service has shaped the nation’s history.

As part of the commemoration, the ceremony will feature the raising of the “America250” commemorative flag -- marking the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States -- and the POW/MIA flag, which honors prisoners of war, those missing in action, and those who never returned home. The program will also include the traditional “Missing Man Table” protocol, a symbolic military ritual that pays tribute to fallen and unaccounted-for service members.

A central element of the event will be a special recognition of the 65th Infantry Regiment, the legendary Borinqueneers, whose bravery and sacrifice earned them a Congressional Gold Medal in 2014. The ceremony will highlight the legacy of the Puerto Rican soldiers through a tribute to 97-year-old veteran Ismael Heredia,

one of the regiment’s surviving members.

Organizers emphasized that the gathering aims to honor both Puerto Rican and U.S. service members who have given their lives in defense of democratic values. The early-morning (6:30 a.m.) ceremony is open to the media and invited guests.

More than 375,000 Puerto Ricans have served in the United States Armed Forces since the island became a U.S. territory in 1898.

Condado residents alarmed by dark patch in lagoon

Adark patch visible Sunday in the Condado Lagoon, near Aguadilla Street and the outfall area at Jaime Benítez Park, has raised fresh concerns among Condado residents, who in recent weeks have reported recurring discharges along nearby beaches.

The patch and discharges appeared near areas where locals and tourists regularly paddleboard and kayak, prompting questions about potential health and environmental risks.

According to the most recent water-quality report from the San Juan Bay Estuary Program, published last Thursday, water samples taken at the Aguadilla Street station showed 20.0 CFU/100 ml of enterococci, a level considered safe for swimmers under current standards. Nonetheless, the report showed high levels in waters near Serra Street and Cervantes Street.

The organization conducts weekly sampling with the support of volunteer personnel, as noted on its website.

Despite the acceptable readings, the visible dark stain has revived longstanding concerns about contamination in the lagoon and surrounding coastal areas. Between 2008 and 2013, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency documented that millions of gallons of untreated wastewater, including fecal matter and toxic pollutants, were being discharged daily from the Municipality of San Juan’s system into bodies of water such as the Condado Lagoon and beaches along the northern coast, from El Escambrón

to Ocean Park.

Residents say that while the latest enterococci levels do not indicate an immediate hazard, the recurrence of visible discharges warrants a deeper investigation and coordinated action from state and federal agencies.

As of Sunday afternoon, no government agency had announced whether an official assessment of the dark patch had begun.

Despite acceptable readings in the most recent water quality report issued by San Juan Bay Estuary Program, a visible dark patch in the Condado Lagoon has revived longstanding concerns about contamination in the lagoon and nearby coastal areas. (estuario.org)

Petition to halt tree cutting in Old San Juan surpasses 2,000 signatures

ways and Transportation Authority, is part of a broader initiative to improve streets and pedestrian areas in the historic district, Transportation and Public Works Secretary Edwin González Montalvo said. But for residents and frequent visitors, the removal of mature trees has already altered the character of the city’s most iconic walkways, including the once-shaded Paseo La Princesa.

In the petition, residents describe witnessing “the devastation that tree cutting causes,” noting that a large tree was removed just last week, eliminating not only natural beauty but also essential shade and habitat for local wildlife. They argue that dozens of trees have been cut down in recent years and that many of the replacements have failed to thrive.

For the community, the issue is deeply personal. Generations have grown up surrounded by the greenery that softens the stone and brick of the 500-year-old city.

Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, the petition notes that areas with abundant vegetation can experience temperature reductions of up to 5°C (9°F) during the summer months. Large trees, it adds, can absorb up to 150 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year, making them vital in mitigating climate impacts in an already heat-vulnerable urban zone.

The petition calls for an immediate halt to unnecessary tree cutting, the preservation of existing shade canopies, and the planting of new large-species trees. It also urges the government to conduct thorough environmental evaluations before authorizing removals and to involve the community in reforestation efforts.

Agrowing public outcry over a government plan to cut down more than 50 trees between La Fortaleza and Castillo San Felipe del Morro has intensified in Old San Juan, where a digital petition surpassed 2,000 signatures as of Sunday, urging authorities to stop the project.

“Old San Juan is not just a place full of history and culture; it is an ecosystem that must be protected for future generations,” the petition states.

The plan, led by the Puerto Rico High-

Environmental concerns also feature prominently. Citing data from the Puerto Rico

With more than 180 trees of 18 species identified in the affected corridor -- and over 50 marked for removal -- residents say the stakes are high. For them, the trees are not ornamental; they are part of the daily life, identity and livability of the walled city.

The petition concludes with a call to collective responsibility. Protecting the environment, it says, is essential “to ensure a greener and healthier future for our children and their children.”

Cayey’s Great Urban Park proposal seeks to reconnect people with nature

The proposed Great Urban Park, planned by the Cayey municipal administration for the urban area adjacent to the Ramón Frade León public square, offers several advantages, proponents say, including the protection of the aquifer in the surrounding mountains, among which is the famous Cerro Torito.

Cayey Mayor Rolando Ortiz Velázquez said “this urban park concept is unique in Puerto Rico because it flows along the river, aiming to restore vibrant ecosystems and celebrate the centuries-old cultural heritage of our city of Cayey and its 22 neighborhoods.”

The concept also aims to create inclusive spaces for gathering, playing, learning and generating local economic opportunities, while becoming a local and regional destination for community, tourism and cultural connection. The initiative is guided by a commitment to the conservation of natural resources and the sustainable development of the river corridor in Cayey.

“We recognize the park’s potential as a tool for environmental resilience, where community and intergenerational well-being are combined with inclusive economic development,” the mayor said. “We already see this in the extensive ecosystem of shops, restaurants, and kiosks in

the city center. The concept is organized around four key public policy themes: Environment, Economy, Community Participation, and Aesthetics, where best practices in urban design, ecological restoration, and participatory planning are applied.”

The river corridor in downtown Cayey is part of a larger hydrological system that connects the upland forests with the downland communities, highlighting the park’s role in stormwater management, erosion control and biodiversity corridors. The Great Urban Park plan offers an opportunity to reconnect fragmented pedestrian and ecological networks, linking schools, homes, plazas, and civic spaces through green infrastructure.

“Another advantage of our Great Urban Park is its inclusivity, safety, and broad accessibility, as it is conceived and designed for universal access,” Ortiz Velázquez said. “Involving Cayey residents and students who participate in the Urban Planning Competition that the Municipality organizes every year guarantees citizen participation, reflecting the needs and values of Cayey residents. This initiative is a great community endeavor for the present and future of our people.”

Another avenue of solutions generated by the planned park is related to climate resilience. The river and surrounding ecosystems are not just elements of the natural environment,

the mayor noted, they are vital to Cayey’s identity, climate resilience, and future as a “Green City.”

“Restoring the river, protecting green infrastructure, and educating about sustainable practices can help us reduce flooding, purify water, and cool the city during extreme heat waves,” Ortiz Velázquez said. “Preserving native biodiversity and continuing to generate information about the value of ecology is a shared responsibility for all of us in Cayey.”

“We recognize the park’s potential as a tool for environmental resilience, where community and intergenerational well-being are combined with inclusive economic development,” Cayey Mayor Rolando Ortiz Velázquez, right, said of the plan for a Great Urban Park in the municipality’s urban center.

A 51‑member advisory council is approved to advance statehood push

Agroup of veteran advocates for Puerto Rico statehood convened by attorney Gregorio Igartúa has approved a reso lution to create a 51‑member Statehood Advi sory Council (Consejo Asesor de la Estadidad) composed exclusively of leaders 65 years and older who would advise on political, educa tional and congressional outreach efforts to advance the island territory’s admission as a U.S. state.

The proposal stemmed from frustration with the New Progressive Party (NPP) over its setting aside of efforts to achieve statehood, Igartúa said. Last week, President Donald Trump stated that granting statehood to Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. would be a “disaster” for the United States. He claimed that admitting them as states would add four Democratic senators, dramatically impacting the Electoral College, and warned that Democrats would immediately eliminate the filibuster to achieve this.

Igartúa, a longtime advocate for island statehood and a Republican, blasted Trump over his remarks, saying that it would be illegal to condition how Puerto Ricans will vote as

Longtime statehood advocate and former San Juan Mayor Hernán Padilla warned that the statehood cause cannot advance without organized, sustained work both in Puerto Rico and in the states.

a prerequisite for statehood.

The resolution, presented during a gath ering of longtime pro statehood leaders at a restaurant in San Juan on Friday, seeks to formalize a high‑level committee of senior figures with decades of political and organi zational experience.

According to the document, the council would serve as a permanent ideological and strategic advisory group, working alongside the NPP’s existing Misión Estadista structure

to strengthen the movement’s messaging, historical continuity and national outreach.

The committee, so far, has 12 members. They are former San Juan Mayor Hernán Padilla, attorney Luis Batista Salas, Peter Muller, former Sen. Orlando Parga, publicist Pedro Rivera Casiano, Héctor Ramos, Fran cisco “Pompi” González, former Puerto Rico Supreme Court Justice Edgardo Rivera, Tiody de Jesús, Helcías Bermúdez, Ivette Chardón and Igartúa.

“You have become the wise people of statehood,” said Padilla, urging attendees to assume a more active role beyond attending periodic meetings. He was accompanied by his daughter, Ingrid Padilla, who said the pro statehood movement has to bring the eight million Puerto Ricans living in the mainland toward the statehood cause.

Hernán Padilla, one of the movement’s most influential elder statesmen, warned that the statehood cause cannot advance without organized, sustained work both on the island and in the states. He emphasized that the NPP’s mission must extend “beyond” Puerto Rico and that older leaders have a responsibility to mentor younger advocates and mobilize diaspora communities.

“Statehood is the reason we have a po litical party. … Statehood is the reason for the New Progressive Party,” he said. “And if statehood is the reason for the New Progres sive Party, something is wrong because we are not enough to mobilize Puerto Rico.”.

Igartúa, who has long pushed for federal recognition of Puerto Rico as an incorpo rated territory, framed the new council as a necessary evolution for a movement that, he argued, must modernize its structure and strategy.

The resolution calls for members to advise on congressional engagement, develop edu cational programs, preserve the movement’s historical record, and recommend recogni tion of distinguished “estadistas” as official “próceres” (founding fathers).

Muller, who read the resolution aloud creating the committee, said the NPP’s up coming 60th anniversary underscores the need for institutional renewal. He described the group as “yesterday’s youth” leaders with the experience and political memory to guide the next phase of the statehood campaign.

“We have to be more proactive,” Muller told the audience. “... I don’t want to stay at home waiting for others to do the work.”

House ‑sponsored vaccination program reaches pets in Cabo Rojo

Some 83 cats and 77 dogs were vaccinated against rabies and other diseases during an outreach event held late last week at the San Francisco de Asís Animal Sanctuary in Cabo Rojo.

Early in the morning, staff from the island House of Repre sentatives, led by Speaker Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez, as well as officials from the State Office for Animal Control and the Veterinary Doctors Association, visited the sanctuary state road PR 114 in the southwestern coastal town.

“The genesis of the community aid program ‘Leaving Footprints: A Fair of Love for Our Animals’ is centered on assisting with the pet vaccination process, essential for their well being,” the House speaker said. “That’s why we directly support non-profit organizations like the Cabo Rojo Animal Sanctuary so they can continue their excellent work rescuing,

caring for, and providing a home for abandoned dogs and cats in the southwest region of Puerto Rico.”

In addition to the vaccines, deworming services were provided.

Likewise, House staff delivered bags of pet food, toys and cleaning products, among other items, to volunteers at the sanctuary, which for more than a decade has provided veteri nary and care services to abandoned dogs and cats.

The rabies vaccine is first administered to pets between 12 and 16 weeks of age. Booster doses are then given between one and three years of age. Deworming, meanwhile, usually done with pills, eliminates internal and external parasites. Its frequency varies depending on the animal’s age and lifestyle.

Since March 2025, the new program has reached commu nities in Bayamón, Barranquitas, Cabo Rojo, Toa Baja, Camuy, Hatillo, Quebradillas and San Juan with vaccination fairs and low cost veterinary services. To date, more than 1,500 pets

(dogs and cats) have been vaccinated against rabies.

Some 77 dogs, along with 83 cats, were vaccinated against rabies and other diseases during a recent outreach event at the San Francisco de Asís Animal Sanctuary in Cabo Rojo.

Justice Dept. charges woman with mistreating her mother

The island Justice Department, through the Carolina Prosecutor’s Office, filed charges over the weekend against Van essa Pagán Ramírez for mistreating her mother, an elderly woman identified as Carmen Iris Ramírez, Justice Secretary Lourdes Gómez Torres said Sunday.

Food, flashlights and fans: Floridians step up aid to Cuban relatives

People in Cuba are enduring food shortages, near-constant blackouts and suffocating heat.

For many, the only relief comes in packages from relatives hundreds of miles away in Miami.

As the island nation faces economic collapse under the U.S. oil blockade, South Floridians are rushing to ship boxes stuffed with canned meats, bags of rice and beans and other staples to hungry relatives. They are also sending mosquito nets, flashlights, fans and loose-fitting nightgowns for coping with insufferable nights. Some pay off-the-books couriers known as “mulas,” or mules, who fly to Cuba to deliver goods or envelopes of American cash.

Jorge Smith, 64, who left Cuba for Miami four years ago, has been shopping for a stronger solar-powered generator for his daughter and her 5-year-old son in Havana. With electricity ever more fleeting, the 60watt machine he bought and shipped them months ago no longer suffices.

“They only have two hours grid power a day,” said Smith, an Uber driver who, like many Cuban Americans, struggles to pay his own bills in an increasingly unaffordable Miami.

While he is deeply opposed to the Cuban government, Smith doesn’t agree with the blockade. “By cutting off the oil, they cut off the life of the people,” he said. “It’s the people who suffer.”

Cubans have long relied on relatives in the United States, who today can turn to informal couriers, multiple shipping companies in Miami and Amazon-style shopping sites that arrange deliveries to the island.

But demand has intensified as Cuba’s communist government struggles to contain a catastrophic energy crisis. The island has all but run out of fuel for local transport, and its aging power stations are unable to keep its electrical grid running.

Oil shipments from Venezuela, Cuba’s longtime benefactor, were already dwindling before the Trump administration captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January and asserted control over the nation’s oil industry. To pressure the Cuban government into collapse, the Trump administration then imposed a de facto blockade barring all foreign oil from reaching the island.

Cuban officials announced this month

that its fuel oil supplies had been completely depleted. As part of its pressure campaign, the Trump administration on Wednesday announced it had secured an indictment against Raúl Castro, the nation’s former leader, for his suspected role in the fatal downing of two planes piloted by Cuban exiles.

Food for sale in both state- and private-owned Cuban stores has long been exorbitantly priced, said Michael J. Bustamante, a University of Miami historian who specializes in Cuban affairs.

“If you’re in a position to have family members on the outside that can try to get you stuff, you already have a leg up on a big chunk of the Cuban population,” said Bustamante, whose family recently helped arrange delivery of a wheelchair to an older relative with dementia.

Yet Cuban Americans find themselves in a delicate position. Many support President Donald Trump’s pressure campaign, even as their families turn to wood charcoal to cook now that blackouts are far more frequent.

“I don’t want my son to suffer, but if that’s the only way to be free, well, I have to put up with it so that Cuba can be free,” said Tania Lompard, 66, who came to Miami from Cuba nearly two decades ago.

She and her husband recently sent 105 pounds of beans, canned ground beef and powdered milk to her adult son. The goods were shipped through Cubamax, a Florida chain that also serves as an online supermarket, travel agency and remittance company.

Such businesses are contentious in Miami.

They have described themselves as vital to delivering the type of humanitarian aid permitted under the decades-old U.S. embargo, which prohibits most exports to Cuba. The new oil blockade briefly disrupted the companies’ deliveries on the island this winter, but they resumed after the Trump administration began allowing private businesses to procure their own fuel.

Some Cuban Americans, including a number of elected officials, have criticized the companies, arguing that their business helps prop up the island’s communist regime, and that the goods they ship include luxury items prohibited by law.

“Using those services means supporting the regime,” said Lázaro Campos, 42, who instead buys plane tickets for friends to visit Cuba with goods packed in long black duffel bags known as “gusanos,” or worms.

Cubamax executives did not respond to

Bags of items that will be shipped to Cuba sit outside a courier shipping business where a line of people waiting for service had formed, in Hialeah, Fla., May 20, 2026. Months into the oil blockade imposed by President Donald Trump, many Cubans are relying more than ever on deliveries of food and other necessities from relatives in the U.S. (Saul

several requests for comment.

In South Florida, Campos scrapes by on whatever jobs he can muster: handyman, construction worker, delivery driver.

He supports three children in Cuba, one a 17-year-old who said that his school had stopped providing food and that classrooms had become unbearable without fans. Campos also sends medicines for his elderly mother, who relies mostly on rainwater to drink and bathe after her town’s water pump broke. She lives on Isla de la Juventud, an island province where ferries delivering supplies have been cut back because of the lack of fuel oil.

Campos’ living conditions aren’t easy, either — he can’t afford rent, so he sleeps in his white Mitsubishi SUV or crashes with

friends.

For Ivis Cladera, the soaring price of gas has crimped her ability to send cash every week to her parents in the Matanzas province. She drives about 20 miles each way between her apartment in Hialeah, outside Miami, and her job at a casino in Hallandale. She earns less than $11 an hour, or minimum wage for servers in Florida.

On a recent afternoon outside a Cubamax in Hialeah, Cladera was sending sterile syringes to Havana so her mother can inject her blood circulation medication. In Havana, her parents have virtually no electricity — but she doesn’t want to invest in solar panels to send them, as other Cuban Americans have done.

“It’s too expensive,” she said. “Besides, I’m hoping communism will fall soon.”

One killed in exchange of gunfire with Secret Service near White House

Aman who was already known to the U.S. Secret Service approached the White House complex Saturday evening, took a gun out of a bag and opened fire before being shot and fatally wounded by Secret Service police officers.

A bystander was also struck by gunfire, the Secret Service said in a statement, though it did not give details on the nature or severity of the injuries. It was unclear who fired the shot that struck the bystander.

The gunman, who was identified by two officials with knowledge of the investigation as Nasire Best, 21, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured, the Secret Service said.

In a social media post early Sunday, President Donald Trump thanked the Secret Service and law enforcement officers involved in the shooting, and described the gunman

as having “a violent history” and a “possible obsession” with the White House.

The shooting took place a little after 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, at the northwestern corner of the White House grounds.

Trump, who was in the building at the time, had made it known Friday that he would be spending the long holiday weekend at the White House.

In his social media post, Trump also appeared to renew his push for a proposed ballroom and security expansion at the White House, saying the episode underscored the need for “the most safe and secure space of its kind ever built in Washington.”

Within the past month, two people have been arrested after opening fire in the vicinity of top U.S. officials.

On April 25, a man from California who was armed with a shotgun, handgun and several knives charged past a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where Trump was due to

speak, before being subdued by Secret Service agents.

On May 4, a man from Texas was wounded during an exchange of gunfire with Secret Service officers near the Washington Monument, accused of making vulgar statements about the White House afterward, as he was being taken to a hospital in an ambulance.

Best had been arrested last July for walking into a restricted area on the White House grounds, ignoring signs and commands to stop. At that time, according to an affidavit filed in D.C. Superior Court, Best had already been known to Secret Service personnel “for walking around the White House complex inquiring how to gain access at various entry posts.”

He had briefly been involuntarily held that June for blocking a vehicle entry on the east side of the White House, the affidavit said. At the time of that arrest, on a misdemeanor charge of unlawful entry, he had no pending warrants. He told officers at the scene that “he was Jesus Christ and that he wanted to get arrested.”

Court records show that a judge issued a “stay away order” the day of his arrest, apparently barring him from the area around the

White House. After he did not show up for a hearing in August, a bench warrant was issued.

On Saturday evening, the flurry of gunfire prompted a brief White House lockdown, and rattled the reporters who were gathered on the North Lawn.

Selina Wang, a senior White House correspondent for ABC News, posted a video on social media of her recording a report when what sounds like gunfire can be heard in the background.

She was about three seconds into the recording when the noises are heard, and she dropped to the floor for cover.

“I was in the middle of taping on my iPhone for a social video from the White House North Lawn when we heard the shots,” she wrote on the social platform X. “It sounded like dozens of gunshots. We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now.”

Allison Robbert, a photographer for The New York Times, said that about 20 to 30 gunshots were heard from the north lawn of the White House.

“Journalists heard it from outside the press room and were ushered inside by Secret Service,” she said in a text message.

There has never been an example of presidential corruption like this NEW YORK TIMES EDITORIAL

Has there ever been an episode of presidential corruption so blatant and threatening to constitutional order? Certainly not in modern times. President Donald Trump’s Justice Department is using taxpayer money to create a $1.8 billion political slush fund. Ostensibly set up to compensate those who the department claims have “suffered weaponization and lawfare,” it will in fact reward loyalists willing to defy the law and commit violence on behalf of the president.

The fund manages to combine three of Trump’s most alarming behaviors. One, it is an obvious form of corruption, coming from a president who has used his office to enrich himself, his family and his allies. Two, the fund continues his pattern of using the Justice Department as an enforcer to punish his perceived opponents and protect his friends and allies. Three, the fund is his latest attempt to rewrite history about the 2020 election and the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on Congress.

It is worth pausing to put the fund into the larger context of Trump’s political project: He is destroying pillars of American democracy to empower himself. He claims elections are legitimate only if he wins. He uses federal law enforcement to investigate and prosecute his perceived enemies. He purges his party of officials who defy him. He describes members of the other party and civil society as traitors and enemies. He incentivizes his supporters to break the law on his behalf and rewards them when they do. He directs his allies to change election rules to keep his party in power. Trump’s project has not yet succeeded, at least not fully. Many Americans — in the judicial system, in Congress, in state

governments and elsewhere — continue to stand up for democracy and oppose his autocratic ambitions. By now, though, nobody should have illusions about what he is attempting to do.

The fund’s existence is a story of political self-dealing. It is nominally the product of a flimsy personal lawsuit that Trump filed this year against the IRS, which he oversees, over the leaking of his tax returns during his first term. That lawsuit led to an absurd negotiation, in which the lawyers on one side worked for Trump the citizen and those on the other side worked for Trump the president.

Adding to the absurdity, the government lawyers reported to Todd Blanche, the acting attorney general, who previously worked as Trump’s personal lawyer. A federal judge in Miami helping to oversee the case, Kathleen Williams, pointed out that the two sides were not adversaries, which called into question the process. Even Trump acknowledged the situation shortly after filing the suit by saying, “I am supposed to work out a settlement with myself.”

Yet the talks proceeded because Trump’s Justice Department was in charge. Unsurprisingly, they led to a deal that was extremely favorable to him.

In exchange for the president’s dropping the suit against the IRS, both he and his supporters will receive government handouts. For Trump, the handout comes in the form of permission to have cheated on his taxes. The government has granted him and his family immunity from ongoing audits of his tax payments. He has a long history of using questionable accounting maneuvers, and the audits could have cost him more than $100 million, experts have said. Now they will cost him nothing.

For his supporters, the handouts will come from the slush fund. The Justice Department will tap a permanent stream of revenue that Congress created in 1956, known as the Judgment Fund, to settle lawsuits against the federal government. As Paul Figley, a former Justice Department official, noted, the new fund appears to be both legal and at odds with Congress’ intent. “It’s horrible policy,” Figley told The New York Times.

“Has there ever been an episode of presidential corruption so blatant and threatening to constitutional order? Certainly not in modern times,” The New York Times Editorial Board writes. (Philotheus Nisch/The New York Times)

of Trump’s authority.

Even some of Trump’s usual defenders are unhappy. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., meekly said that he was “not a big fan” of the fund. Brian Morrissey, the Treasury Department’s general counsel, resigned within hours of the announcement, seven months after the Senate had confirmed him.

Providing payoffs is only part of the point. Another, according to Blanche, is “ensuring this never happens again.” What, exactly, is “this”? The evenhanded enforcement of the law.

The Trump administration has already fired federal agents who did their duties by investigating the president’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump has issued blanket clemency to more than 1,500 Jan. 6 rioters, some of whom may soon receive payments. His Justice Department secured an indictment of James Comey, the former FBI director, on dubious charges as retribution for his role in the investigation of the 2016 Trump campaign’s Russia ties. The fund continues the effort to turn law enforcement into a tool of raw political power.

The department has allocated $1.8 billion for what it calls, in an Orwellian flourish, an Anti-Weaponization Fund and invited applications from people who have been targeted for “political, personal or ideological reasons.” Blanche — who holds his position as acting attorney general largely because of his willingness to use federal power in service of Trump’s personal whims — will appoint a five-member board, with congressional leaders given input on one of the five. Trump can fire any of the members at any time.

To understand who is likely to receive payments, look at who has previously received settlements from the Justice Department. Michael Flynn, who was briefly Trump’s national security adviser in 2017, received $1.25 million, even though he pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents. The family of Ashli Babbitt, who participated in the Jan. 6 riot and whom federal agents shot as she and others approached the House floor, received nearly $5 million, even though investigators cleared the shooters of wrongdoing. The Trump administration is paying off people who committed violence and crimes as long as they are Trump allies.

The fund’s timeline is the giveaway of how Trump plans to use it. The Justice Department said the fund would stop processing claims Dec. 15, 2028, weeks before the president is to leave office, ensuring that the money is distributed while he still holds the power to fire anyone who objects. The window is precisely the window

The fund also encourages future lawlessness on Trump’s behalf. It sends the message that he will use his power not only to shield people who break the law from accountability but also to shower benefits on them. Just as punishment is a deterrent, rewards are an incentive.

After President Richard Nixon’s abuses in the Watergate scandal, Congress and the executive branch built rules and traditions to ensure that federal agencies, especially the Justice Department, operated in the public interest, rather than that of the president. Trump has tried to break this system. Once he is gone, it will need to be rebuilt, and better than before. He has exposed and exploited its flaws and gaps. Unless they are filled, Trump’s corruption and perversion of justice risk becoming the norm.

‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ review: Baby Yoda takes the silver screen

A scene from “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” (Lucasfilm Ltd./Fairview Entertainment/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)

“The human face is the great subject of the cinema.” That’s Ingmar Bergman, in a widely cited quote. If he’s right, then what could possibly be the thinking behind the Mandalorian, a franchise-carrying hero permanently covered by a helmet?

I’m aware that opening a “Star Wars” spinoff review with a Bergman line may come off as sniffy. It would be cruel to judge “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” — directed by Jon Favreau as a continuation of the story he built over three seasons of television — alongside works by the Swedish master. Blockbusters are, in many ways, a step removed from cinema, their universes so stacked with rules and narrative intricacy that they fall into a category all their own, in a galaxy far, far away from “Persona.”

In this movie’s pocket of that galaxy, the Mandalorian is an armored bounty hunter who has taken to accepting one-off contract jobs for the New Republic — better known, from the franchise’s dualistic viewpoint, as the good guys. His given name is technically Din Djarin, but he mostly goes by Mando, and he is played with breakneck speed, vigorous brawn and flinty stoicism by the ever likable, and ever shrouded, Pedro Pascal. To remove Mando’s helmet is akin to an assault, a viola-

tion of his people’s sacred oath, and so, like a medical device or a lanyard at Comic-Con, the helmet stays on.

That’s bad news for viewers like me, who consider staring at a metal visor for over two hours a violation of our own sacred oath. Fortunately, there’s a second lead whose blinky eyes and perky ears are wholly visible: that precious, eucalyptus-colored protégé called Grogu by the lore and Baby Yoda by the fans. He is still here and still cute, his creased face and waddling, animatronic frame offsetting the pixel polish found elsewhere in the frame.

The duo’s story kicks into gear once Mando accepts a mission from the New Republic’s Col. Ward (Sigourney Weaver, on autopilot) to track down an elusive Imperial holdout. Because the bad guy’s identity is a mystery, Mando has to go through the devilish, delinquent Hutt Twins, those slimy, molluscoid brutes whose sibling alliance verges on incestuous. In exchange for the intelligence, Mando must rescue their kidnapped nephew, Rotta (voiced by Jeremy Allen White), a sinewy maverick who’s been coerced into competing in gladiatorial games on a distant planet.

As tangled “Star Wars” plots go, it’s a pretty straightforward affair, cleaving almost equally into discrete halves that could very well have been two episodes on a streamer.

Like much of “The Mandalorian” series — not to mention nearly every big-screen action flick these days — the movie is more or less a chain of fight scenes: Mando versus transgressors; Mando versus a “Monsters, Inc.”-worth of ferocious beasts; Mando versus a spate of nameless henchmen. “I try to avoid violence,” the ordinarily taciturn hero deadpans at one point in a line meant to elicit chuckles.

The dialogue is almost uniformly mindnumbing, stuffed with filler like “good luck, you’re going to need it” and “we don’t have much time.” (The screenplay is by Favreau, Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor.) The movie’s best interlude eschews talking to instead trail Grogu on a miniature solo adventure. It has to do with Grogu’s enduring devotion to Mando, his long-established father figure, and the segment is unexpectedly touching.

The moment ends with a message about the covenant between generations, the responsibility of the parent to the child and vice versa. It doesn’t totally land, mainly because Mando and Grogu only sometimes read as a mutually caretaking lone wolf and cub. More often, they suggest a buddy comedy, a trope brought to the “Star Wars” market long ago by the original outlaw and housebroken sidekick, Han Solo and Chewie. In a cloying touch, this installment doubles down on its claims to cuteness by tossing in extra creature companions: a foursome of Anzellans, those wiry gremlin gadgeteers who dismayingly make the case that what we’re watching is merely “Minions” to the third trilogy’s “Despicable Me.”

“Star Wars” is often seen as the prototype for today’s franchise hegemony, a model for Marvel and Minions and everything else.

But uneasily attending “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is an extratextual suspicion: Amid a dizzying deluge of series and animated sidebars, has Disney diluted its biggest brand? As its return to the IMAX — I mean, silver — screen, the saga could do worse than this movie. With their main guy’s face behind metal, that’s a more than respectable showing.

Global equity fund investors halt eight-week buying streak as bond yields rise

Global equity funds recorded the first weekly outflow in nine weeks in the week through May 20, as investors turned cautious over inflation and a rise in long-term borrowing costs to nearly two-decade highs.

According to LSEG Lipper data, investors liquidated a net $6.13 billion of global equity funds during the week, logging their first weekly net sales since mid-March, when they had withdrawn a net $21.87 billion.

The 30-year U.S. Treasury yield climbed to 5.201% on Wednesday, its highest since 2007, as uncertainty around a possible resolution to the Middle East conflict raised concerns over energy prices and inflation. It last traded at 5.0795%.

U.S. equity funds suffered the second weekly outflow in three weeks, to the tune of $12.05 billion. Asian funds also recorded net outflows of $570 million, though European funds attracted a net $4.62 billion in inflows.

Technology sector funds were popular for a seventh successive week, with net inflows of $6.94 billion. Financials and industrials, however, had weekly outflows of $2.8 billion and $1.3 billion, respectively.

Investors, meanwhile, bought a net $21.89 billion of global bond funds as they extended the recent buying streak into a seventh successive week.

Short-term bond funds, government bond funds and euro-denominated bond funds witnessed significant weekly net purchases of $7.47 billion, $3.09 billion and $1.68 billion, respectively.

Money market funds recorded a lighter $1.06 billion weekly net inflow, after a net outflow of $10.41 billion the prior week.

Gold and precious metals commodity funds saw a net $2.34 billion of weekly inflows, remaining popular for a second straight week.

In emerging markets, investors shed a net $2.95 billion of equity funds, resulting in a fourth straight week of outflows. They also withdrew $256 million from bond funds after a run of six weekly purchases, combined data for 28,926 funds showed.

This week kicked off with a fresh surge in sovereign bond yields around the world as the Iran energy shock kept up the pressure on oil prices, inflation expectations and rate-hike bets. Global equities were volatile against that backdrop as the risk-off turn took some attention away from the AI frenzy, though major indexes ticked up later in the week, led by buoyant chipmakers.

Government borrowing costs notched several milestones as bonds came under renewed pressure this week, with 30-year U.S. Treasury yields hitting their highest point since 2007. Japan’s long-dated borrowing costs also hit new record highs and Britain’s gilt yields hit their highest since the 1990s as investors fretted about a possible change in Prime Minister. The bond sell-

ing abated late in the week, with gilts catching a break from below-forecast UK inflation and signals from the main challenger to Keir Starmer’s premiership, Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, that he would stick to the government’s existing fiscal rules.

But the situation in the Gulf remained the major aggravator of bond yields as the energy shock showed no sign of abating. Oil prices were

volatile throughout the week, with fresh attacks in the region over the weekend pushing Brent crude back over $110 per barrel on Monday. Prices later dipped as low as $105/bbl on Wednesday after reports that supertankers carrying some 6 million barrels had transited the Strait of Hormuz.

Meantime, President Trump continued his hardball strategy: floating fresh military action while urging Tehran to strike a peace deal, all while talking up prospects for a breakthrough. Oil prices spiked once more on Thursday, however, after Tehran appeared to harden its stance on its nuclear programme, underscoring the distance that remains between the two sides’ negotiating positions.

Iran projects victory in potential deal with Washington

As President Donald Trump and regional diplomats began to herald the possibility of a deal with Iran that could end the war, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry responded with his version of a history lesson.

Esmail Baghaei, the spokesperson, posted an image on social media of a famous relief carved into an archaeological site in Iran that portrays a Roman emperor bowing in submission to a king of the Sassanians, an ancient Iranian empire.

“In the Roman mind, Rome was the undisputed center of the world,” Baghaei wrote, in an apparent reference to the political and military might of Washington today. “The Iranians shattered that illusion.”

Despite the military and economic battering Iran has endured during its war with the United States and Israel, its leaders are casting the reported terms of a possible preliminary agreement with Washington as a victory.

On Sunday, a senior U.S. official said that the United States and Iran had agreed to a preliminary deal that would fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz and see Iran dispose of its stock of highly enriched uranium. The official, who spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to speak publicly, cautioned that a deal had not been signed and would have to be approved by Trump and Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader.

Many of the most intractable problems between the countries, including the future of Iran’s nuclear program, were put off to future negotiations. Iran’s leaders and official state media have not publicly commented Sunday on what is in the potential agreement or what specific issues are under discussion.

How well Iran has fared through the negotiations can only be determined once the terms are known. But regional experts say the country will have a good chance of portraying the results as a win. Two months ago, Trump had vowed there would be no deal with Iran except “unconditional surrender.” Instead, Washington looks as if it has been forced to accept Iran’s oft-repeated position that the only way to end this standoff is through negotiation, not war.

“For their domestic and regional base, they proved themselves the underdog, capable of taking on two nuclear-armed powers,” said Ellie Geranmayeh, an analyst and the author of the European Council of Foreign Relations’ Iran Nuclear Monitor.

People wave flags at a government-organized march in support of Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, in Tehran, Iran, April 29, 2026. (Arash Khamooshi/Polaris for The New York Times)

“They are now coming out with a stronger geopolitical hand than before given their dominance in the Strait of Hormuz. They also demonstrated that Trump’s nuclear dilemma with Iran won’t be resolved through military might.”

By comparison, the biggest U.S. and Israeli ambitions against Iran seem to have been frustrated. The killing of Iran’s supreme leader and top military commanders has not toppled the country’s autocratic system of clerical rule.

Any terms for curbing Iran’s ballistic missiles or its regional network of allied militias, according to what has been reported about the preliminary agreement, do not appear to be included.

And it remains unclear what commitments Iran would have, and under what time frame, to suspend its nuclear program or remove its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which could be turned into a nuclear weapon.

Discussion about those commitments may be pushed into a second phase of negotiations. Claiming victory is in some ways easier for Iran than for the United States because “the definitions of victory are so lopsided,” said Mohammad Ali Shabani, an Iran analyst and editor of the regional news website, Amwaj.media.

But when it comes to projecting strategic deterrence, he said, Iran does have reasons for renewed confidence.

For years, Iran’s previous supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the

opening salvos of the U.S.-Israeli attack, had become cautious in confronting Washington, Shabani said.

In the current war, Iran’s new leaders showed a willingness to take an aggressive approach that Khamenei had seemed reluctant to take. Iran closed the strait, even though it meant Iran’s vessels were also blocked, and it bombarded its neighbors, the Gulf Arab states that are key regional U.S. allies but with whom Iran had previously sought to foster closer ties.

Iran’s new leaders — among them the deceased supreme leader’s son and successor, Mojtaba, “have done away with that predictable nature,” Shabani said.

Instead, they have shown that “you can enter a war with the United States and you will not be completely eliminated. In fact, you could resist. You can resist and impose so much damage on the world economy, so much disruption, that you can compel them to make a deal with

you,” he said.

None of this negates the serious challenges that Iran faces.

The country is in the throes of a devastating economic crisis. Critical industries with both military and civilian uses have been badly bombarded — from steel factories to petrochemical plants.

If the negotiations offer Iran either temporary sanctions waivers to sell its oil, or an unfreezing of some of its economic assets abroad, Iranian leaders can sell that domestically as another significant win, said Farzan Sabet, an analyst of Iran and weapons systems at the Geneva Graduate Institute in Switzerland.

Yet, perhaps most important for Iran’s leaders, the country will apparently retain its newfound ability to close the Strait of Hormuz through the threat of renewed drone or rocket attacks on shipping, he added.

Much of the outlook on an agreement depends on it moving beyond just an understanding to end hostilities, said Ali Vaez, the Iran project director at the International Crisis Group. He was skeptical that the two sides would actually be able to move to a second phase of negotiations, when a tentative plan to halt the war would be transformed into a substantive deal.

“I don’t like the framing a lot of people use to say this is just a defeat for the U.S., or a win for Iran,” he said. “This had really turned into a lose-lose dynamic for both sides, and I don’t believe either side will be really winning as a result of this understanding.”

As Ebola rages in countryside, Congo’s capital strives to carry on

Nations around the world are imposing strict entry restrictions on people who have been to Congo recently because of a deadly Ebola outbreak in the country’s northeast.

But in Kinshasa, the Congolese capital, most of the 20 million residents are carrying on as usual.

Open-air markets where vendors sell cassava, fish, fruit and clothes remained packed. Workers crammed into taxis or hopped on their motorcycles for morning commutes on the heavily congested roads. Patios and bars were full of patrons drinking beer and eating grilled chicken with mayo.

“I don’t know and don’t see why we should be afraid,” Malula Richard Esambo, president of a soccer fan group in Kinshasa, said at an event in the city this month organized by the Congolese Football Association. “Kinshasa is safe for now.”

Spanning more than 900,000 square miles, Congo is nearly six times the size of California. The distance between the center of the Ebola outbreak, Ituri province in the northeast, and Kinshasa is roughly 950 miles, about the distance to Orlando, Florida, from New York.

And there is not much travel between Kinshasa and Ituri because of poor roads, reducing the likelihood of the outbreak spreading to the capital, said Tulio de Oliveira, director of the Center for Epidemic Response and Innova-

Kinshasa residents continue to pack bars, markets and public transportation, despite growing international concern about the spread of the virus in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, May 22, 2026. (Justin Makangara/The New York Times)

tion at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

That is why, de Oliveira said, the United States would be better served by supporting the affected countries in order to stem the outbreak at its source, rather than “establish a travel ban or isolation of all patients who come from such a large country.”

“I don’t think that’s a good public health response,” he added.

Still, some public health experts warn that because the virus spread unchecked for weeks, faraway places may not yet be in the clear. There is no vaccine for this species of the

virus, called Bundibugyo, and health officials are still struggling to set up clinics in Bunia, the capital of Ituri.

On Friday, the governor of Ituri banned gatherings of more than 50 people and suspended a soccer match in Bunia. And on Saturday, Congo’s government announced that it was banning all air travel in and out of Bunia, and that aid flights would require special authorization.

So far, there have been 177 suspected deaths and about 750 suspected cases of the virus, which has spread into Uganda and South Sudan. If it were to reach a megacity like Kinshasa, which has a population of about 20 million people, it could present significant challenges because its dense urban environment and large population offer ripe conditions for rapid spread.

What eases the minds of many Congolese is the fact that they have been here before.

This is the 17th Ebola outbreak to hit the country since the virus was discovered 50 years ago. For all of the challenges that Congo might have, its health authorities are well experienced in responding to Ebola.

“Here, people think it doesn’t concern Kinshasa,” said Christine Nlandu, 37, a vendor at a suburban market. “They think it’s a far-off story.”

Petronella Mugoni, a social and behavioral public health researcher who has worked in Congo, said she feared that some in Kinshasa had become complacent about Ebola because

the city had not been heavily affected by previous outbreaks.

It is crucial for the government to step up its targeted public health information about Ebola, she said. But that can be difficult in a city where there are so many diseases that kill more people annually than Ebola has, and residents face an overload of health information, she said.

It may also be hard for many people in Kinshasa to focus on Ebola prevention when they have to rely on informal work in order to feed their families, Mugoni said.

“Even in the midst of challenges, earning money takes precedence,” she said. “Closing markets down would be more catastrophic than Ebola for many.”

But residents of Goma, another major city, are not taking the Ebola outbreak lightly. Goma is the largest city in the eastern part of the country, and there is a lot of travel between Goma and Ituri. On top of that, Goma is currently under the control of M23, a rebel group.

“I am overwhelmed by the news,” said Joëlle Koko Zihindula, 28, a youth worker in Goma. “It is depressing, how the situation is all mixed with conflicts.”

The Congolese government has posted a message on social media stressing “the importance of adhering to preventive measures in response to the Ebola outbreak declared in Ituri.”

But there have been no public awareness campaigns targeting Kinshasa. There are no bans on large gatherings. Schools remain open.

Xi calls for all-out rescue after coal mine explosion kills at least 82 in China

China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, called Saturday for a redoubled rescue mission in northern China after a gas explosion in a mine there killed at least 82 people, the Chinese state news agency said, in what appeared to be one of the deadliest Chinese mining disasters in years.

Xi “stressed the need to make every effort to treat the injured, organize search-and-rescue operations scientifically and properly handle the aftermath,” the agency, Xinhua, reported. He also called for an investigation into the explosion, which happened Friday night, and emphasized the need to “hold those responsible to account, according to the law.”

Xi’s decision to quickly, and personally, issue a statement was significant and may have indicated that Chinese officials expected the situation to worsen. The Chinese government often holds back details of accidents while it gathers informa-

tion and prepares to issue a response. But soon after Xi’s statement Saturday, the official death count began to rise drastically, with new tolls announced every few minutes.

However, the latest death toll of 82 people was a correction by officials to an earlier count of 90 reported by state media. The head of the county, speaking at a news conference late Saturday, said the chaos of the scene and unclear numbers on the company’s workforce led the government to get the initial toll wrong.

Additionally, two people are missing, and 128 are hospitalized with injuries, officials said at the conference.

Xinhua initially reported eight deaths and said that more than 200 of the 247 workers who had been underground when the explosion occurred had been safely recovered.

As of Saturday morning, the cause of the explosion was still unknown, according to CCTV, the Chinese state broadcaster. Xinhua reported

that local authorities had been alerted Friday night that an underground carbon monoxide sensor at the site, the Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi province, had set off an alarm, indicating that levels had exceeded safety limits.

Mayor Chen Xiangyang of Changzhi said at Saturday night’s news conference that a “preliminary assessment indicates that the coal mining company involved has committed serious violations.” He did not say what the violations were, adding, “the specific cause of the accident is under further investigation.”

Live coverage from CCTV on Saturday showed emergency personnel massed on site, pulling out stretchers from ambulances alongside what appeared to be workers pushing mine carts.

The mine, operated by the Shanxi Tongzhou Coal Group, was listed in 2024 among 1,128 mines that had been cited for “severe safety hazards” by China’s National Mine Safety Administration. The Liushenyu coal mine was specifically

cited for high gas levels.

“Provincial-level mine safety supervision departments must urge severely disaster-prone coal mines to implement measures for regional disaster management,” the National Mine Safety Administration said in a statement when it released the list.

China has a long history of industrial disasters, though in the past 10 years, the government has tightened safety regulations and reduced the number of industrial and mine accidents.

The explosion in Shanxi appears to be among the deadliest in recent years, and comes only weeks after a fireworks factory blast killed 26 in Hunan province. It seems to be the deadliest mining disaster since 2023, when 53 people were killed after an open pit coal mine collapsed in Inner Mongolia, a region of northern China.

In 2020, 16 people died of carbon monoxide poisoning after they were trapped in a coal mine in southwestern China.

Meta lays off 8,000 employees, as AI casualties mount

For the last month, employees at Meta have been on edge.

In April, they were told that 8,000 of them, or 10% of the workforce, would be laid off on May 20 as Meta remade itself for the artificial intelligence era. Last Monday, they learned that another 7,000 employees would be reassigned to new AI initiatives.

On Wednesday, the ax fell. The layoffs began in Singapore, where at 4 a.m. local time emails went out to workers who were being laid off. Employees in Britain, the United States and elsewhere were notified early Wednesday morning in their respective time zones.

Many workers began exchanging somber messages remotely and checked the internal directory to figure out who on their teams was cut. On Meta’s internal forums, hundreds reacted to the layoffs with salad emoji, their way to say “salute.” At least one person who was hired within the past month was laid off, two people with knowledge of the job cuts said.

Meta’s offices were mostly empty Wednesday after Janelle Gale, the company’s

head of human resources, told employees last week that they should work from home. On the office walls, flyers sharing a petition to stop Meta’s new program to track employee data for AI training were visible, eight employees said. Some workers scavenged the offices for free snacks and laptop chargers last Monday in case they no longer had jobs by the end of the week, said the employees, who declined to be identified for fear of retaliation.

The turmoil at Meta — which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp — offers an up-close look at layoffs in the AI age. Job cuts at tech companies in the name of the fastevolving technology have gathered steam. Tech workers, it is becoming clear, have been creating their own AI replacements. Two weeks ago, the networking giant Cisco said it would eliminate 4,000 jobs as it shifted more resources to AI. Microsoft, Block and Coinbase also recently announced layoffs or buyouts because of the technology.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, has been vocal about staking his company on AI. He has said he wants to create “superintelligence,” an advanced AI that can act as the ultimate personal assistant. Last month, Meta said it would spend between $125 billion and $145 billion — more than double what it spent in 2025 — this year, much of it on AI.

But the company’s transformation from a social networking firm to an AI-first entity has been far from smooth. Employees have said the embrace of AI has led to anger and anxiety across Meta’s 78,000 person workforce, according to 13 current and former employees. The frustration was heightened by Meta’s strong financial performance, with the company reporting record revenue last month, leading to questions about why job cuts were needed.

In a note to employees Wednesday morning, Zuckerberg said he was grateful to those who were laid off for their work and optimistic about the company’s AI efforts. More companywide layoffs were not expected this year, he said.

“Success isn’t a given. AI is the most consequential technology of our lifetimes,” Zuckerberg wrote. “The companies that lead the way will define the next generation.”

Before the cuts, hundreds of employees in New York gathered for drinks Tuesday night to “commiserate or celebrate, pick your poison,” according to a copy of an invitation seen by The New York Times. The title of the event: “Never a dull moment [salute emoji].”

More than 1,000 employees have signed the petition to stop the AI data tracking program, while others have rallied around internal posts critiquing top leadership. But as Zuckerberg pushes forward with AI, employees are wrestling with how, or whether, they can do anything to change course.

“AI is a freight train, but the future is not a foregone conclusion. It’s not too late to pump the brakes and consider how we, society, want to go about this,” Mack Ward, a

software engineer at Meta, wrote in a post to employees this month, which was liked by more than 2,000 people, encouraging them to sign the petition. “Speaking up is never easy, but ‘easy’ isn’t what you were hired to do.”

Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s chief technology officer, addressed some concerns in a question-and-answer session two weeks ago. There are “a tremendous number of employees feeling anxieties about their futures,” he said, according to a recording of the meeting reviewed by the Times. “It’s all bad. I’m not going to try to sugarcoat that.”

Executives have taken steps to retain workers they see as key talent. One directorlevel employee was offered additional equity worth roughly $500,000 to stay, two people familiar with the matter said, a tactic that Meta also used to keep certain employees during its last round of layoffs. Some refused the offers and left, the people said.

Workers who were laid off were given 16 weeks of severance pay, plus an additional two weeks for every year they worked at the company.

This month, Meta began enlisting hundreds of employees to work for a new team led by Maher Saba, a vice president of engineering, called Applied AI and Engineering, five of the employees said. Some workers began referring to the effort as a “Draft.”

Saba’s new team, which has around 2,000 employees, will use the data gathered by the employee tracking program to create AI tools, four employees said. It will have fewer layers of management than other parts of Meta, with around 50 workers reporting to each manager. Those who joined the group would be safe from the layoffs, the company said.

In an email to managers this month about the new AI team, Meta instructed them to emphasize to employees that it was “a high priority initiative, directly from Mark.” Participation was not optional, the mes-

Thirteen teams had secured their spot in the sectional finals of the Double-A Superior Baseball League as of press time Sunday, leaving just three spots to be determined.

The Titanes of Florida, Peces Voladores of Salinas, Guardianes of Dorado and Libertadores of Hormigueros joined the ranks of the qualifiers on Saturday.

In the North section, the Titanes dethroned the 2025 sectional champions and 2026 regularseason leaders Arenosos of Camuy by way of a 7-1 victory. Joshua Santiago pitched the first five innings to earn the victory, while Jean Pérez finished the game in relief to record the save. Jesmuel Valentín and Dariel Ríos each drove in two runs.

Florida now awaits the winner of the semifinal series between the Atenienses of Manatí and

the Tigres of Hatillo, which was tied at two wins apiece going into Sunday’s scheduled games.

In the South, the Peces Voladores completed a comeback with three consecutive victories, eliminating the Poetas Juana Díaz, the section’s regular-season leaders, 7-6.

With two gone in the top of the ninth inning, Salinas rallied for five runs to win. Joek Rivera, Julio Carrión and Bryan de la Rosa spearheaded the offense, each driving in two runs. Jared Ortiz pitched four scoreless innings in relief to earn the win, and Jean Ramos recorded the save.

The Peces Voladores, who have won the South section crown in the past five seasons, had dropped the first two games of the series. They will face the Maratonistas of Coamo in the sectional final.

In the Metro section, the Guardianes defeated the Maceteros of Vega Alta 4-2 to knock them out of the postseason, backed by a seveninning, six-strikeout performance by Enrique Cotto. Dorado cemented their lead with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the seventh inning. Alejandro Valiente pitched 1.2 innings to record the save. Robbie Merced drove in two

Santurce wins 3rd straight, Arecibo tops Mayagüez

The Piratas of Quebradillas, Cangrejeros of Santurce and Capitanes of Arecibo all notched victories in Superior National Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) games on Saturday night.

At Raymond Dalmau Coliseum in Quebradillas, the Piratas defeated the Osos of Manatí, 87-85.

Quebradillas led for much of the contest and went into halftime with a 49-36 lead.

Manatí rallied in the fourth quarter with an 18-7 run to tie the score at 75, and the game remained tight until the final seconds.

The Osos’ Kristian Doolittle knotted the score at 85 from the free-throw line, but Emmanuel Mudiay’s basket with 21 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner for the Piratas.

Mudiay led Quebradillas (5-16) with 21 points, and Grant Basile added 20.

Jameer Nelson Jr. finished with 31 points for Manatí (8-13), and Tyquan Rolón contrib -

uted 21.

Cangrejeros win 3rd straight

At Ismael “Chavalillo” Delgado Coliseum in Aguada, the Cangrejeros defeated the Santeros of Aguada, 108-83.

Santurce extended a seven-point firstquarter lead in the second frame and went into halftime with a 55-42 advantage.

The Cangrejeros turned back an attempted comeback by the hosts in the second half to win by a comfortable margin.

Davon Jefferson led Santurce (9-12) with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Ángel Matías added 18 points, and Jordan Howard finished with 17.

Rigoberto Mendoza scored 26 points for Aguada (10-10), and Noah Horchler added 20.

Capitanes take season series against Indios

The Capitanes defeated the Indios of Mayagüez 95-85 at Manuel “Petaca” Iguina Coliseum in Arecibo.

The Indios led 50-43 at halftime, but the Capitanes rallied in the third quarter (31-15) to take control of the game and entered the final 10 minutes with a 74-65 advantage.

Arecibo continued to widen the gap in

the fourth quarter to secure the victory at home.

Timothy Soares led the Capitanes (145) with 29 points and seven rebounds. Jack McVeigh added 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Derrick Walton Jr. dished out 15 assists.

Nathan Sobey finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds for Mayagüez (8-13). Neftalí Álvarez added 14 points and Thomas Robinson contributed 13.

Timothy Soares’ 29 points and seven rebounds led the way as Arecibo improved to 14-5.

runs with a double and scored one himself. The Guardians bounced back after losing two consecutive games, having previously taken a 2-0 lead in the series.

The victory marked Víctor Claudio’s debut as player-manager for Dorado, following the departure of Joey Solá. The Guardians will now face the Gigantes of Carolina in the sectional finals.

In the Northwest section, the Libertadores eliminated the Tiburones of Aguadilla 5-0, thanks to the shutdown pitching tandem of Omar Meléndez and Roy Geigel.

Meléndez struck out six batters over seven hitless innings to earn the win. Geigel pitched the final two innings to record the save. Carlos Lugo and Adriel Acevedo each drove in two runs.

Hormigueros will face the Patrulleros of San Sebastián in the Northwest section finals.
