The government of Puerto Rico on Sunday announced significant progress for women in the labor force, marking the highest level of female participation recorded in 45 years. According to a new study from the Department of Labor and Human Resources (DTRH by its initials in Spanish), women represented 45.2% of the workforce in 2025, the highest share since 1980.
The report, titled “Women’s Participation in the Puerto Rico Labor Force: Calendar Year 2025,” was prepared by the DTRH’s Auxiliary Secretariat for Statistics and Publications. It draws on data from the Worker Group Survey, which collects monthly information from a scientific sample of 3,200 households.
Gov. Jenniffer González Colón highlighted the findings as evidence of progress, while acknowledging the challenges that remain.
“This progress is an achievement we aim to sustain by promoting public policies that reduce the gaps and inequalities women still face,” the governor said. “Our administration is advancing training initiatives and talent retention efforts through the creation of more jobs, many of them highly paid thanks to our strategy of bringing more manufacturing to the island. This same study identifies that household responsibilities remain the main reason why nearly one million women remain outside the labor force. That is why we are creating programs such as ACUDEN ContiGO to expand access to child care and extended school-age care services.”
Labor Secretary María del Pilar Vélez Casanova noted that the data shows a shifting demographic and educational profile among working women.
“Today we see a more prepared, diverse female population with an increasingly solid presence in strategic sectors of our labor market,” Vélez Casanova said. “These advances are the result of the efforts of thousands of women and of public policies aimed at expanding opportunities.”
Workforce numbers show broad gains

are between the ages of 25 and 54, though participation has also increased among women aged 55 and older -- signaling broader demographic shifts.
Educational attainment among working women continued to improve: 70.8% have postsecondary studies, and nearly half hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Service and commerce sectors remain the largest sources of female employment, accounting for 66.5% of positions. More than half of women work in professional, administrative, or support occupations.
Self-employment also grew, with 59,000 women working independently in 2025, indicating diversification in how women integrate into the labor market.
Socially, the composition of employed women has shifted: 45.6% are single, surpassing married women (41.1%) for the first time.
Despite the progress, the study identifies substantial areas for improvement. An estimated 915,000 women remain outside the labor force. Household responsibilities account for 47.9% of those cases, followed by retirement (23.5%) and academic studies (11.9%). Women ages 20 to 24 recorded the highest unemployment rate within the female population.
Women’s Advocate Astrid Piñeiro Vázquez welcomed the report’s findings and emphasized the need for continued action. “It is a great source of satisfaction to validate through these data that female participation has reached its highest level since 1980,” Piñeiro Vázquez said. “This historic progress, including the lowest female unemployment rate recorded at 5.2%, validates the public policies promoting equity and economic development. We reaffirm our commitment to breaking barriers, especially for the many women who remain outside the workforce due to household responsibilities.”
In absolute terms, the female labor force reached 560,000 women in 2025. Of those, 531,000 were employed, representing 45.4% of total employment on the island. The female labor force participation rate rose to 38.0%, reversing years of decline. Unemployment among women dropped to 5.2%, the lowest since 1980, with only 29,000 women recorded as unemployed.
The gender gap in labor force participation also narrowed significantly, decreasing from 32.9 to 14.9 percentage points.
The report shows that 73.1% of employed women

Former San Juan Mayor Hernán Padilla has formally joined a pro-statehood initiative urging the U.S. Congress to certify Puerto Rico as an incorporated territory of the United States, an action supporters argue is long overdue after 128 years under U.S. sovereignty.
The effort, coordinated by attorney Gregorio Igartúa and a group of statehood advocates, calls on federal lawmakers and the president to recognize what the petition describes as Puerto Rico’s “de facto incorporated status.” The group contends that the island already functions in alignment with incorporated-territory standards and that Congress should formally acknowledge that reality as part of the nation’s broader evolution during the United States’ 250th anniversary year.
According to the petition, recognizing incorporation would also align with “the special interests of Gov. Jenniffer
González,” who has long advocated for advancing Puerto Rico’s path toward statehood.
Padilla on Sunday expressed agreement with the petition’s position that continued plebiscites -- whether local or federally sanctioned -- are no longer a viable or just path for resolving the island’s political status. He argued that repeated votes risk undermining established rights of U.S. citizenship and distract from what he views as Puerto Rico’s long-standing pattern of political integration comparable to territories that ultimately became states.
He echoed the petition’s comparison that asking Puerto Ricans to vote on their political status is akin to asking African Americans during the civil rights era to vote on whether they should receive federal voting rights.
As a longtime statehood supporter, Padilla said the current territorial arrangement is discriminatory, noting that 3.3 million U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico remain

subject to federal authority without full representation or equal treatment under U.S. law. He criticized what he described as an inconsistent federal approach that treats Puerto Rico as incorporated for some purposes and unincorporated for others.
“This arbitrary practice must end,” the statement argues, noting that such contradictions stand in tension with the principles of the U.S. Constitution and the democratic standards the United States expects from other nations.
The petition asserts that Puerto Rico already meets the characteristics historically associated with incorporated territories and has achieved a higher level of assimilation than any previous territory prior to statehood admission.
Padilla joined the petitioners in calling on Congress to certify Puerto Rico’s incorporation without further delay, emphasizing that more than a century has passed since the island was acquired by the United States in 1898.

The Puerto Rico Hospitals Association
(AHPR by its initials in Spanish) held its annual summit this past weekend on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, where hospital administrators, doctors, healthcare industry professionals and some 21 experts in the field of AI applications participated.
The event sought to analyze the critical decisions facing healthcare leaders in Puerto Rico regarding the integration of health information technologies and artificial intelligence solutions, with the goal of strengthening informed and responsible decision-making aligned with the regulatory, clinical, operational, and financial challenges impacting hospitals and other healthcare delivery models.
“The healthcare sector was convened to learn about the latest developments and applications of AI aimed at protecting patient
health and all related aspects,” AHPR Executive Vice President Pedro González said.
The forum’s various panels analyzed the current state and evolution of the health ecosystem in Puerto Rico based on the lessons laarned during the past year in the adoption of health information technologies and AI, “in order to identify structural gaps, emerging capabilities and critical decisions that will allow the health system in all its delivery models to be positioned for the regulatory, operational and sustainability challenges that lie ahead in 2026,” González added.
Among the topics presented and discussed was “Algorithmic Inference and Decision-Making in Mental Health Clinics,” which emphasized “clinical moderators and epistemological boundaries with the goal of analyzing the use of algorithmic inference and artificial intelligence architectures as support tools in clinical decision-making in mental health,” the AHPR official said.

Hundreds if not a thousand or more people turned out on Saturday for the San Juan “No Kings” protest march against the administration of President Donald Trump, carrying signs bearing messages such as “No to Fascism” and “No Thrones in America.”
The throng unless you were the drone that briefly hovered overhead there was no way to precisely estimate the size of the crowd -- gathered in front of the Puerto Rican Hall of Fame and marched noisily to nearby El Escambrón, egged along by mobile loud speakers.
Along with the protest against the Trump administration (see related story on page 6), many of those gathered were simultaneously marching against the Essence Development project in Cabo Rojo.
“The No Kings march and the Essence protest are all mixed together,” said Dariana Frontera, 30, of the Sierra Club.
The Sierra Club opposes the project because its $2 billion price tag for 1,123 housing units and 520 hotel units will be funded in part by $497 million in tax incentives, and according to the Sierra Club that will mean less resources for essential services, less investment in the communities and a greater weight carried by the working population.

The protesters’ political ideologies ranged from a small Communist Party contingent to the Sierra Club, which led the Essence protest, to average people with no particular ideology.
Some statesiders were also on hand, such as Wendy Thurmond, a teacher from Tacoma Park, Maryland who lent her support for “No Kings.”
“We just refer to the whole situation as ‘it,’” said Thurmond, who said she was “older than 30.”
One New Yorker who didn’t want to reveal her identity said she came to Puerto Rico especially for the protest.
Xochitl Cabarrones, 60, of the Council for Latin America Advancement, held a sign saying “No thrones, No Crowns, Workers have no borders.”
Other signs said “In 1776 We Needed No Kings,” and “There are no dictators, the struggle continues.”
Sebastián Castrodad, 38, a documentary filmmaker with camera and microphone in hand said, “In part this is a protest to improve the conditions of workers directed at a labor reform.”
“They’ve left people behind with no consideration for the economic impact,” he said.

Aprocedural dispute has emerged in the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) rate case before the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) after bondholders objected to a Feb. 23 filing by the utility, alleging that the submission improperly included advocacy despite a prior order prohibiting it.
In response, hearing examiner Scott Hempling, who is overseeing the rate case, has granted both sides limited opportunities to clarify and contest the disputed material.
The controversy stems from a Feb. 12 order directing PREPA to supply a concise summary of its proposed annual revenue requirement (ARR), complete with citations to the evidentiary record. Hempling emphasized that PREPA’s filing could contain no advocacy, as the deadline for initial ARR briefs had already passed.
PREPA submitted the required material on Feb. 23. However, on March 26 PREPA bondholders filed an objection asserting that PREPA’s submission included argumentative content and should either be disregarded or opened to rebuttal.
After receiving the objection, the hearing examiner informed all parties by email that an order granting the bondholders’ request would be forthcoming and asked for input on deadlines. The bondholders proposed April 7.
PREPA quickly pushed back. In an email response, counsel for the utility argued that issuing an order within 24 hours of the bondholders’ filing would deprive PREPA of due process. PREPA also called the bondholders’ objection untimely, noting that it challenged a Feb. 12 order more than six weeks
after issuance and a Feb. 23 filing more than a month after it was made.
PREPA further disputed the factual basis of the bondholders’ motion, stating that the bondholders incorrectly claimed the utility missed the Jan. 23 initial-brief deadline without seeking an extension. PREPA insisted it had requested a five‑day extension on Jan. 21 an extension the hearing examiner denied.
According to PREPA, its disputed Febr. 23 filing “contained the information ordered … supported by citations without advocacy,” and it is the bondholders who “are in fact, advocating their position.”
Despite the disagreement, the hearing examiner issued an order providing a narrow path forward. Parties now have until this Friday, April 3 at 5 p.m. Puerto Rico time to identify any PREPA statements they believe constitute advocacy and to explain why. PREPA will then have until the following Friday, April 10 at 5 p.m. to respond solely on the question of whether those statements are, in fact, advocacy.
Hempling underscored that no further argument will be entertained. The PREB will consider only whether any impermissible advocacy occurred and, if so, disregard it entirely, as the advocacy phase of the case closed with the initial briefs.
With a statutory deadline requiring a final order by April 16, and the PREB in the midst of drafting a complex resolution based on thousands of pages of filings, the examiner made clear that the agency has no bandwidth for extended disputes.
“The far better course would be for Bondholders and PREPA to meet and make this problem go away,” the hearing examiner wrote, adding that the PREB “needs this dispute
like it needs a hole in the head.”
The bondholders in PREPA’s $9 billion bankruptcy, which began in 2017, had sought to intervene in the rate case to ensure their debt is paid. They have also sought intervention in the case to draft a new integrated resource plan for Puerto Rico’s energy needs.

Eight months away from elections that will decide if they keep control of Congress and preserve their governing trifecta, House and Senate Republicans have identified the enemy — and it is one another.
A meltdown in relations between the two GOP-led chambers caused the embarrassing collapse Friday of a Senate-passed proposal to reopen the Department of Homeland Security before lawmakers raced out of town on a twoweek recess. It left no clear path for resolving the crisis that has led to airport chaos and workers without paychecks.
And with President Donald Trump seemingly cheering on the intraparty squabble from the White House, it also highlighted an undercurrent of tension and division coursing through Republican ranks that has burst to the surface at the least politically opportune time.

Passengers wait in a line at a security checkpoint at LaGuardia Airport in New York on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. A meltdown in relations between the two GOP-led chambers of Congress caused the embarrassing collapse late last week of a Senate-passed proposal to reopen the Department of Homeland Security before lawmakers raced out of town on a two-week recess. (Dave Sanders/The New York Times)
The breakdown over homeland security funding left hard-right House Republicans castigating their Senate brethren and ripping Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., the majority leader, in particular for cutting what they saw as an atrocious deal with Democrats in order to ease a departure for Easter break.
“Thune screwed America and left town,” Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., wrote on the social platform X. He was just one of many Republicans incensed by what they characterized as a Senate GOP sellout approved without so much as a formal vote in the middle of the night.
That was just hours after Trump told Fox News that the Senate deal was “not appropriate.”
“At three in the morning, senators just decided, well, throw in the towel and maybe see what they can cobble together to get out of town,” Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the No. 2 Republican, said as the House on Friday approved its own plan to fund the entire agency for eight weeks. “That is not the responsible thing to do for this country.”
The nearly party-line vote came after House Republicans dismissed a bipartisan Senate plan to fund homeland security operations other than Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol and allow those branches to continue operating with money included last year in the party’s major tax and social policy law.
GOP leaders in the House saw that approach as surrendering to Democrats, who had refused for weeks to vote for any homeland security money without curbs on the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation crackdown, after two U.S. citizens were fatally shot by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis this year.
But the competing House and Senate plans meant that the shutdown would continue because neither chamber is due back until mid-April to do any business, and both have passed plans that the other refuses to take up. The Senate is set to meet in a pro forma session Monday morning, and
Speaker Mike Johnson urged Republicans to try to force through the House plan then. But that would require the agreement of Democrats who have made clear they are staunchly opposed.
With their majorities at grave risk in November, Republicans would rather not spend the critical months before the elections sniping at one another in a nasty intramural spending feud, or defending the Trump administration’s attacks on Iran for that matter.
Party division can drive down voter enthusiasm and turnout. GOP lawmakers would much prefer to focus on saying how voters benefited from the tax cuts they pushed through last year or promoting a sweeping housing package they are trying to deliver to Trump’s desk — or at least training their attacks on Democrats
Instead, the housing measure is stalled amid Republican divisions, gas prices and economic worry are rising because of an unpopular Iran war, and some days GOP lawmakers appear angrier at each other than they are at Democrats.
Thune and Johnson have talked since the backlash to the Senate legislation erupted, but the majority leader has not responded publicly to the outcry. As the legislation was agreed to just before 2:30 a.m. Friday with only a handful of senators on the floor, he made it clear that it was not his preferred approach but a pragmatic way to move forward and settle the spending fight.
“It’s not the way to fund the department,” he said of the piecemeal spending on homeland security, “but we are out of time for the critical responsibilities, and tens of thousands of workers currently going without pay.”
The Republican unrest is being exacerbated by Thune’s
handling of a new voter measure being pushed by Trump. The president, along with hard-right members of Congress in both chambers and activists, have urged the majority leader to keep the Senate in session and gut the filibuster if necessary to approve the bill that would put stricter requirements on identification to vote and register and new controls on voting by mail. But Thune has so far demurred and has said at some point he would end the debate if Republicans are unable to overcome a Democratic filibuster.
Given the Republican infighting, lawmakers now fear they may have to start anew in the Senate to negotiate some sort of compromise with Democrats, even though such talks failed to produce an agreement over the past two months because Democrats and the White House could not come to terms on new restraints on immigration officers.
But the GOP divisions have also sapped Democrats’ incentive for reaching a deal. Trump on Friday declared that he would go around Congress to pay Transportation Security Agency workers, potentially alleviating the airport security snarls that were a main motivator in coming up with the bipartisan Senate deal the House rejected.
Plus, Democrats have their own midterm imperatives and will be in no hurry to get into the middle of a fight between dueling Republicans.
“The bill that the Senate passed — every conservative senator and every liberal one came to a consensus that the stalemate needed to end, that TSA agents needed to be paid, and that FEMA needed to be funded,” Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Colo., said during the House debate. “The only reason we are not considering it is because our colleagues on the other side of the aisle have been captured by the far-right wing of their party. It is shameful.”

In the Twin Cities, a sea of people converged on the state Capitol, invoking the memories of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Demonstrators swarmed intersections in Portland, Oregon, motivated by what one called a “national crisis” that had “escalated to a whole other level.” In Little Rock, Arkansas, where more than 2,000 people marched across the Arkansas River, one woman carried her own MAGA sign: “Morons Are Governing America.”
Protesters filled streets and town squares across the United States on Saturday at thousands of rallies, the third in a sequence of nationwide, loosely coordinated demonstrations under the banner of “No Kings.” They came to denounce President Donald Trump and much of his second-term agenda, wielding signs and chants about issues such as mass deportation, restrictions on voting, attacks on diversity and two matters that have suddenly moved to the fore: the war in Iran and the soaring gas prices that have resulted from it.

“No Kings” rallies, according to organizers.
“Prices are going up, and it feels like we can’t even afford to live anymore,” said John Moes, a Minneapolis resident who was dressed in a 15-foot puppetlike costume resembling Prince, a local icon.
“This is one of the ways we can say we’re fed up,” said Moes, who described himself as an independent who leans Democratic.
The No Kings organizers said that 8 million people took part; their estimates in some cities were higher than those of local public safety officials. The New York Times is doing its own reporting on some of the turnout, but has not independently confirmed the numbers from the thousands of protest sites.
The demonstrations stretched across the country, from above the Arctic Circle (Kotzebue, Alaska: population 3,000) to the tropics, in Puerto Rico. There were also 39 international
The Twin Cities were a focal point of the day’s protests after tumultuous months of an immigration crackdown that included the killing of two protesters, Good and Pretti, by federal agents. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety estimated that 100,000 people took part; “No Kings” organizers said the number was 200,000.
On a windy and cold day, protesters marched in orderly waves toward a stage at the Capitol in St. Paul, flying Minnesota state and American flags, chanting and singing.
Jane Fonda, an icon of activism against the Vietnam War, addressed the crowd, and Bruce Springsteen took to the stage to perform “Streets of Minneapolis,” which he wrote as a tribute to the city and its defiance to the federal immigration crackdown.
“Here in our home they killed and roamed. In the winter of ’26,” he sang. “We’ll remember the names of those who died. On the streets of Minneapolis.”

Other large protests took place in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. In Manhattan, demonstrators passed through Times Square in a procession that stretched for more than a mile. In Washington, D.C., marchers passed near the residence of Stephen Miller, the architect of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, and called for his removal.
The nationwide marches under mostly bright skies came amid an unpopular war in Iran, months of fury by progressives over sweeping immigration enforcement raids, falling stock markets and sustained frustration over the cost of living, especially rising gasoline prices.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll published Tuesday found Trump’s approval rating had fallen to 36%, the lowest point since he returned to the White House. Just 35% of respondents approved of the U.S. strikes on Iran, the poll found.
Valerie Tirado, the mother of a Marine who is headed to
the Middle East, marched in Brooklyn on Saturday with a sign that said “Bring My Son Home.”
“Trump is using these military men as pawns, just to flex,” said Tirado, 60.
With the midterm elections months away, the protests are being scrutinized for whether they could translate to any political shifts. Although the protesters were largely Democrats, dozens more “No Kings” events were held in Republican-dominated or battleground states Saturday than during the last marches in October, according to the organizers. But overall the shift was marginal, as 49% of events were held in red or battleground states Saturday compared with 48% percent in October, according to data provided by the organizers.
The White House has reacted to “No Kings” rallies with mockery. On Thursday, a White House spokesperson, Abigail Jackson, said in a statement that “the only people who care about these Trump derangement therapy sessions are the reporters who are paid to cover them.”
At a time when conservative control of Washington remains complete, in the White House, Congress and the Supreme Court, the marches were a chance for Democrats to make their voices heard and to try to portray Republican domination as teetering.
At a small protest in Richmond, Kentucky, Missy Manet, 29, donned a red yarn hat and said she had attended the gathering as a show of frustration with the direction of the country.
“I feel somewhat powerless,” she said of being a Democratic voter in a staunchly Republican part of the country. “I feel like my vote doesn’t do a lot most of the times.”
The marches had no shortage of skeptics.
In Oxford, Mississippi, Cass Rutledge, a first-year law student at the University of Mississippi, walked through the “No Kings” protest and around the town square on Saturday and questioned why people thought Trump was acting like a king.
“He is, you know, a duly elected president who won the popular vote and the Electoral College in a landslide,” Rutledge said. “And so I’m a little bit confused on how he’s acting differently than any other president.”
Saturday’s events were organized by national and local groups, including widely known progressive coalitions such as Indivisible, 50501 and MoveOn, as well as hundreds of smaller ones, like American Atheists, the Transgender Law Center and the Michigan Climate Action Network.
In June, the first “No Kings” demonstrations took place on the same day that Trump scheduled a military parade in Washington for the Army’s 250th anniversary, coinciding with his 79th birthday.
In October, more than 7 million people attended “No Kings” demonstrations in all 50 states, according to organizers. (The New York Times has not verified the crowd numbers, which encompassed thousands of rallies.)

Most Americans probably don’t look back at March 2012 — if they remember it at all — and think of terrifyingly high gas prices. In the month when “The Hunger Games” ruled the box office and President Barack Obama was on his way to a comfortable reelection, the price of Brent crude closed the month around $123 a barrel. That would be about $175 a barrel in today’s dollars.
As of Tuesday, despite Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its attacks on its neighbors’ energy facilities, it’s hovering around $100, slightly higher than the average inflation-adjusted price since January 2001, roughly $95.
That ought to provide some perspective on the panic over the war in the Middle East. To hear the critics’ version of events, an unprovoked and unnecessary attack on Iran, launched at Israel’s behest, is already a foreign-policy fiasco that has put the global economy at risk without any clear objective or endgame. As Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., told NBC’s Kristen Welker over the weekend, “We’ve never seen this level of incompetence in war-making in this country’s history.”
Really? Let’s take a tour of some of the recent history.
— During the 1991 Operation Desert Storm against Iraq’s Saddam Hussein, a campaign that is widely considered a brilliant military success, the U.S.-led coalition lost 75 aircraft, 42 of them in combat. In this conflict, four manned aircraft

Dr. Ricardo Angulo Founder
María
have been destroyed, three to friendly fire and one in an accident. Not a single manned plane has yet been lost over Iran.
— The U.S. air and land campaign in that operation lasted a full six weeks. Today it’s remembered as a lightning-fast war. The current conflict with Iran is less than four weeks old.
— In the 1989-90 invasion of Panama, whose military phase lasted a few days, the United States lost 23 soldiers, with 325 more wounded. So far in this war, U.S. losses are 13 dead. Among the more than 230 wounded, most have swiftly returned to duty.
— During the Persian Gulf crisis that began with Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in August 1990, the U.S. economy went into recession and the Dow fell by about 13% before the allied air war began. Since conflict with Iran began last June with Operation Midnight Hammer, the Dow is up by 9% as of Tuesday morning.
— At the outset of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the United States made a failed decapitation strike against Saddam and his senior leadership, some of whom became leaders of the insurgency. In this war, much of Iran’s top leadership was killed on the first day and there is still no proof of life from the new supreme leader. Yousef Pezeshkian, the son of the current president, has written that if Iran can’t prevent the continued assassination of its leaders, “we will lose the war.”
— Between 1987 and 1988, in the final stages of the so-called tanker war, the Reagan administration reflagged Kuwaiti tankers and had the U.S. Navy escort them out of the Strait of Hormuz. An Iranian mine nearly sank an American frigate. The conflict wound down after the United States sank a handful of Iranian navy ships. This time around, we have destroyed almost all of Iran’s navy with no naval losses of our own.
— In 1991, Iraq fired roughly 40 missiles toward Israel. Hardly any were intercepted despite the deployment of Patriot batteries there. In this war, Israel is registering an interception rate of 92% against more than 400 missiles. Iran’s overall rate of fire has dropped from 438 ballistic missiles on the first day of the war to 21 on Monday. Drone fire has also declined from 345 to 75 for the same dates.
— In the months leading up to the second Iraq war, the George W. Bush administration made a case based on erroneous information that Saddam possessed weapons of mass destruction. In the current war, there is no question that some 970 pounds of highly enriched uranium lies stashed and buried in Iran — possibly enough, with further enrichment and conversion into uranium metal, for 11 nuclear bombs. If the outrage of the Iraq war is that Saddam didn’t have WMD capabilities, is it now supposed to be somehow more outrageous that Iran does?
— One of the worst mistakes of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was the attempt by U.S. administrators to remake societies in both countries — well-intended efforts with some noble results that nonetheless were beyond our grasp. In this war, despite some varying rhetoric from President Donald

“... if past generations could see how well this war has gone compared with the ones they were compelled to fight at a frightening cost, they would marvel at their posterity’s comparative good fortune,” Times columnist Bret Stephens writes. (Naila Ruechel/The New York Times)
Trump, the goal has been reasonably clear and consistent: Iran cannot have nuclear weapons or other means to menace its neighbors. As for regime change, we hope the Iranian people use the opportunity of their leadership’s weakness to seize their own destiny. But we won’t do it for them.
— The Bush administration had little support from Arab nations during the 2003 invasion of Iraq and its aftermath.
Now The New York Times reports, “Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has been pushing President Trump to continue the war against Iran, arguing that the U.S.-Israeli military campaign presents a ‘historic opportunity’ to remake the Middle East.” Hopefully, one way in which it can be remade is through a peace treaty between Riyadh and Jerusalem.
— In hindsight, the single biggest error of the Gulf War was to end it too soon, before Saddam’s forces were thoroughly routed. Trump should not make the same mistake.
I am not blind to the Trump administration’s failures in planning, particularly its unwillingness to make a stronger public case for war and get more allies on our side before the campaign began. I am also purposely comparing the war with Iran to past wars of similar scale, rather than our true military fiascos in Vietnam, Korea and the two world wars — in which tens of thousands of Americans died due to poor tactical planning and bad strategy.
Still, if past generations could see how well this war has gone compared with the ones they were compelled to fight at a frightening cost, they would marvel at their posterity’s comparative good fortune. They would marvel, too, at our inability to appreciate the advantages we now possess.

In the hand-drawn period pieces that have earned French animator Sylvain Chomet international acclaim, the cartoony characters don’t speak. Their bodies tell the story.
But for his first animated feature in 15 years, “A Magnificent Life,” out in U.S. theaters Friday, Chomet’s drawings deliver plenty of lines. “I won’t ever do a film with dialogue again,” he said in a recent video interview from Auvergne, in central France. “I’ve done this one, and it’s about Marcel Pagnol, so it needed to have dialogue.”
The animated biopic celebrates Pagnol, the French playwright, filmmaker and author who immortalized the working class of the Provence region in his vast oeuvre throughout the 20th century. Though it’s certainly Chomet’s most verbose outing, the new film preserves his singular style of caricatured figures in exquisitely detailed backgrounds that earned him four Oscar nominations, including for “The Illusionist” (2010) and “The Triplets of Belleville” (2003).
Nicolas Pagnol, the artist’s grandson, said he had watched “The Triplets of Belleville,” in which a mother tries to save her son from the mafia with the help of a trio of vaudeville performers, “perhaps 20 times.” He approached Chomet with the intention of working together on a rather traditional documentary about his grandfather’s multifaceted creative life, which would have blended archival footage with some historical reenactments in animation.
Chomet, 62, was interested, but favored a different approach. “I said, ‘Let’s do the opposite,’” he recalled. “Let’s do an animated film, and we’ll use some live-action excerpts from the films of Marcel Pagnol.”
Like many in France, Chomet knew Pagnol from his books. He first encountered Pagnol in the pages of the autobiographical “My Father’s Glory,” which records some childhood memories as a 10-year-old on vacation with his parents. “I was that age when I read that,” Chomet said. “This little boy was kind of my friend, and I found his adventures great.”
That boyhood connection manifests in “A Magnificent Life.” Chomet uses a whimsical conversation between the adult Pagnol and his childhood self as the movie’s framing device.
That Pagnol never surrendered his ability for wonder and curiosity resonated deeply with Chomet. “When I was a child, I wanted to make people laugh with my drawings,” Chomet said. “I’m quite faithful to the child I was, because I actually became what I wanted to be.”
Years ago, he considered making a similar film about Victor Hugo, the author of “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame” and “Les Misérables,” but after doing some research, he found Hugo’s life uneventful. “He just sat and wrote,” Chomet said. Pagnol, on the other hand, started out in the theater, then moved on to cinema when talking pictures came in, and lived through World War II.
For Chomet, that was a story worth telling.

With “The Illusionist,” for example, he made a emotionally delicate and humorous portrait of a magician struggling to get work that was inspired by another real-life entertainer, Jacques Tati.
And while he would never call his latest subject a loser, Chomet said that some of Pagnol’s characters fit that profile, like Aimable, the bread-maker whose wife abruptly abandons him in Pagnol’s film “The Baker’s Wife.”
Chomet said that part of the reason he had stepped away from animation for so long was to spend time with his children while they were young. That was on top of the challenge of financing films and finding hand-drawn animators who meet his standards.
But he’s back for good now, he said.
His next project, already in the works, is a spinoff of “The Triplets of Belleville.” Based on a story that Chomet wrote more than two decades ago, the new film will follow the triplets as they visit their 100-year-old father, who doesn’t know that they sidestepped conventional careers and became cabaret singers. For his birthday, they are telling him the truth.
“It has the same feeling as my previous ‘Triplets’ film,” Chomet explained. “It’s completely mad, and it’s quite a baroque movie with brand-new, very cartoony characters. I’m going back to the basics, back to silent movies, because they are automatically universal.”
Nicolas Pagnol, who knew his grandfather only via his writings and anecdotes from his grandmother Jacqueline Pagnol, said that “A Magnificent Life” was not a hagiography, but an “accurate portrayal” of a man who had “some dark parts of his character.”
Watching the movie was “the first time I saw my grandfather and my grandmother together,” Nicolas said. “It’s very special, because the moment you accept the animation, it becomes more realistic than if it was live action.”
Because these characters are based on real people and exchange substantial dialogue, Chomet changed his approach to animation. To capture the physicality of people engaged in conversation and how their clothes affect their movement, Chomet shot reference material for every scene with actors wearing period-appropriate outfits.
“A Magnificent Life” also reaffirms Chomet’s predilection for narratives set in the mid-20th century. “Since the late ’70s or ’80s, there’s no more beauty,” he said. “There’s a lot of ugliness in the world, and no more nice design. I prefer that period, because it was more authentic.”
His recurrent affinity for protagonists who are storytellers or performers is also on display. “I like artists when they are quite pathetic,” Chomet said. “I like the idea of losers as characters. They’re much more interesting than superheroes.”
When asked if there were any recent animated films he’s enjoyed, Chomet pointed to Pixar’s “Wall-E” as a good example. (It came out in 2008.) Most 3D computer animation is indistinguishable to him, he said. And although he enjoys Japanese animation, he said that other filmmakers were copying the Japanese style instead of developing their own.
“Globalization is basically having no taste in anything anymore,” he said. “Hand-drawn animation should still be full of different styles.”
“It’s really sad,” Chomet added, but then he smiled. “I’m going to carry on doing my films, because at least I’ll be very original.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.7% on Friday as investors worried about the global economic impact of the war in Iran, leaving the blue-chip index down 10% from its record high close on February 10 and confirming it has been in a correction since then.
In a broad Wall Street selloff fueled by uncertainty about the U.S. and Israeli war with Iran, the Dow in recent days has suffered its worst decline since April 2025, when U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” global tariff announcement sent global markets into a tailspin.
On Thursday, the tech-heavy Nasdaq confirmed it has been in a correction since its record high close on October 29. The S&P 500 is down about 9% from its record high close on January 27.
While investment funds are generally not benchmarked to the Dow, the price-weighted index of 30 companies is well known among Main Street investors and its steep decline reflects a broad deterioration of investor sentiment.

With the selloff driven by fears the Middle East conflict will cripple the global economy, investors are weighing whether the downturn is a temporary dip, similar to the recovery that followed the 2025 selloff, or the start of a sustained period of risk tied to the war.
Global financial markets have tumbled and oil prices have surged since the U.S. and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28. The Dow has lost over 7% since the attacks began. Sky-high oil prices have sparked fears of inflation, with traders expecting the Federal

A 2.4% decline in Goldman Sachs Group weighed more on the Dow on Friday than any other stock.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based company had been pursuing an IPO since 2021, but shelved the plans in late 2022 when economic uncertainty crushed the new listing markets.
The filing comes as market volatility amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East threatens to once again delay the long-awaited U.S. IPO rebound.
Still, some issuers have flipped their prospectuses public in recent days, giving them the optionality to move ahead with the IPO roadshow launch when conditions improve.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel said he had ordered his forces to increase the territory they control in southern Lebanon, as 2,500 U.S. Marines arrived in the Middle East, the latest sign that the monthlong war in the region was far from winding down.
The U.S.-Israeli bombardment of Iran continued Sunday, with strikes on a TV station in Tehran, the capital, and a port in the country’s south, where at least five people were killed. Iran fired repeated volleys of ballistic missiles at Israel without causing casualties, although a fire was reported at an industrial park in southern Israel that includes a hazardous waste facility.
Diplomats from across the region convened for talks in Pakistan, whose mediators had passed along to Iran a 15-point U.S. plan to end the conflict. But Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament, accused President Donald Trump on Sunday of engaging in a front of diplomacy while “secretly planning a ground invasion.”
The Israeli-U.S. military campaign has yet

to compel Iran to accept U.S. demands on the country’s nuclear program or to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial oil shipping route. Iranian forces have successfully blockaded the waterway — through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil transits — sending the price of oil soaring by more than 50%.
Here’s what else we’re covering:
— Lebanon: The Israeli military said Sun-
day that troops were “expanding the security zone” over the border in southern Lebanon, from which the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia has launched attacks in solidarity with Tehran. Netanyahu said his country was determined to “fundamentally change the situation,” further raising fears that a protracted Israeli occupation may be looming.
— Palm Sunday: All the major holy sites in Jerusalem’s Old City have been mostly closed to the public since the war began a month ago, and Israeli police on Sunday prevented two of the most senior Christian representatives in Jerusalem from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, where they had planned to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass.
— Pakistan talks: Foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey convened on Sunday in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, for further discussions aimed at ending the war. But the warring parties did not take part in the talks.
— Lebanese journalists killed: Crowds of mourners gathered in Beirut on Sunday for the funeral of three Lebanese journalists killed in an Israeli airstrike. They were Ali Choeib, a well-known televi-
sion presenter for the Hezbollah-owned Al Manar channel; Fatima Ftouni, who worked for Al-Mayadeen, another channel close to Hezbollah; and her brother, Mohammad Ftouni, also a journalist. The Israeli military said Choeib was a member of Hezbollah’s armed wing. It declined to comment on the killing of the other two journalists.
— U.S. options: Trump has been weighing several options to escalate the conflict, each of which could have far-reaching consequences, analysts say. He could carry out his ultimatum to bombard Iranian power plants unless Iran opens the Strait of Hormuz by April 6, which experts say that could constitute a war crime. Another option would be a risky ground assault to seize Iran’s enriched uranium, which U.S. officials say could one day be used in a nuclear weapon.
— Yemen: The Houthis, an Iran-allied rebel group in Yemen, joined the widening war on Saturday with an unsuccessful missile attack on Israel. The Houthis could further ensnarl global shipping, already under stress by the Iranian stranglehold over the Strait of Hormuz, by threatening vessels passing through the nearby Red Sea.

The arrival of 2,500 Marines and another 2,500 sailors is keeping the number of U.S. troops in the Mideast region at more than 50,000 — roughly 10,000 more than usual — as President Donald Trump decides on his next step in his month-old war in Iran.
While it is still unclear just what the Marines, from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, will be charged with, U.S. officials say the president is weighing whether to try a larger attack, like venturing to seize an island or other ground as part of Trump’s effort to open the Strait of Hormuz.
The narrow waterway, through which about 20% of the world’s oil usually traverses, has been largely closed because of attacks by Iranian forces who are retaliating against the U.S. and Israeli war on their country.
Usually there are around 40,000 U.S.
troops scattered at bases and on ships at any time around the region, including in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. But as Trump has escalated the war in Iran, that number has reached more than 50,000, according to a U.S. military official.
The number of troops no longer includes the 4,500 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford, however. That ship has been hobbled by constant mishaps, including a fire that broke out in the laundry. The Ford withdrew from the region March 23 and sailed to Crete. On Friday, it arrived in Croatia. It remains unclear where it is headed next.
Last week, the Pentagon also ordered about 2,000 soldiers from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East to give Trump additional military options.
The location of the Army paratroopers is not public, the military official said. But they will be within striking distance of Iran. The paratroopers could be used to seize Kharg
Island, Iran’s main oil export hub in the northern Persian Gulf, where U.S. warplanes bombed more than 90 military targets this month. Or they could be deployed for other ground operations in conjunction with the Marines.
But military experts caution that even 50,000 troops, many of them at sea, is a small number for any kind of major land operation. Israel used more than 300,000
troops for its operations in the Gaza Strip that began in October 2023. The U.S.-led coalition that invaded Iraq in 2003 was close to 250,000 at the beginning. At almost one-third of the size of the continental United States, Iran has about 93 million people. Taking, let alone holding, a deeply complex country of its size and complexity and weaponry with 50,000 troops, military experts say, is not doable.

When President Miguel Díaz-Canel of Cuba acknowledged this month that his government was engaged in secret talks with the Trump administration, he revealed that the person guiding the negotiations was the “historical leader of the revolution.”
That honorific is reserved for Raúl Castro, 94, who succeeded his brother Fidel Castro as Cuba’s president from 2008 to 2018, before retreating from the public eye to project an image of a civilian transition under Díaz-Canel.
But with Cuba on the brink of economic collapse from a U.S. oil blockade and gripped by a worsening humanitarian crisis, other members of the Castro family have emerged from the shadows.
One has spoken directly with Marco Rubio, the U.S. secretary of state. Another is taking part in the negotiations with the Trump administration. Yet another is the public face of Cuba’s groundbreaking (and tantalizing) decision to allow Cuban exiles to invest in the island.
The family’s new profile reflects a dynasty that never really exited the political scene, but instead evolved.
Even as U.S. officials increase pressure for sweeping economic changes in Cuba and press for the removal of Díaz-Canel, Raúl Castro’s handpicked successor as president, a family long vilified by U.S. leaders is positioning new generations of Castros as the nation’s ultimate power brokers.
“This could produce an absurd case of deCastrofication where the family creates an illusion of change when the real power in Cuba still resides with them and other members of the post1959 elite,” said Andrés Pertierra, a historian of Cuba at the University of Wisconsin.
The Castros have shaped Cuba’s fortunes since 1959, when Fidel and Rául Castro, the sons
of a wealthy sugar plantation owner, led the revolution that toppled an old order aligned with the United States. They moved Cuba into the Soviet orbit, turning the Caribbean island into a central player in the Cold War.
Fidel Castro, who died in 2016, was the Cuban Revolution’s charismatic “Maximum Leader.”
Raúl Castro long maintained a low profile, acting as the main liaison with Moscow and the revolution’s organizational architect, prioritizing bureaucracy, clear hierarchies and administrative efficiency.
The Castro brothers faced many challenges to their rule, including CIA assassination plots, a decades-long U.S. embargo and the collapse of the Soviet Union, once Cuba’s main benefactor. Venezuela had replaced the Soviets, becoming Cuba’s top oil supplier, until U.S. forces captured Nicolás Maduro in January.
Now, with the U.S. ordering Venezuela to halt oil shipments to Cuba, the family faces what may be its greatest challenge: a fuel shortage that has Cuba’s economy teetering, raising questions about the survival of the island’s repressive communist government.
The U.S. fuel blockade is intended to produce a regime pliant to U.S. demands, similar to the way Venezuela shifted from adversary to client state with the removal of Maduro.
Rubio, referring to Cuba, said recently that “the people in charge, they don’t know how to fix it, so they need to get new people in charge.”
Replacing the Castros, if that is what the United States desires, is a tall order.
Raúl Castro, who is said to remain lucid and in relatively good health for a man his age, presides over the family. Since stepping down in 2018, his prestige and power remain rooted in his status as Cuba’s most powerful military figure. As defense minister under Fidel Castro, he oversaw the creation of GAESA, a sprawling military-run business conglomerate that is Cuba’s most impor-

tant economic force.
Raúl’s children and grandchildren have more prominent official roles in today’s Cuba than Fidel’s descendants, one of whom is an Instagram celebrity known for flaunting a life of luxury in Havana.
One of Raúl Castro’s grandsons, Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro, 41, has emerged as a new player in the crisis. Known as Raúlito, he is also called “El Cangrejo” — the Crab — a reference to being born with six fingers on one of his hands.
Guillermo Rodríguez has been part of his grandfather’s security detail, but these days mostly serves as his personal aide. He was once a fixture in Cuba’s elite social circles, hanging out with popular musicians such as the Charanga Habanera, who attended his 2008 wedding at an elite military club.
Now Raúlito also has a role as a messenger in the negotiations with the administration of President Donald Trump, meeting with Rubio’s team at a recent event in St. Kitts and Nevis where Caribbean nations had convened.
Stunning those who had grown accustomed to his operating behind the scenes, Raúlito appeared this month on state television sitting alongside the regime’s highest-ranking members when Díaz-Canel disclosed the talks with Washington.
Raúl’s only son, Alejandro Castro Espín, 60, is also resurfacing after largely disappearing from public life when his father stepped down as president. An engineer educated and trained in Cuba and the Soviet Union, and a brigadier general in Cuba’s army, he has held leadership roles in Cuba’s intelligence apparatus and has written books critical of the United States such as “The Empire of Terror.”
Now Castro Espín is also taking a leading part in the talks with U.S. officials, according to news media reports. Such a role is not new for him: In 2014, he led Cuba’s side in secret talks with the Obama administration that produced a brief thaw in relations with the United States.
Another Castro family member suddenly rising in prominence is Óscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga, 54, a soft-spoken engineer and grandnephew of Raúl and Fidel Castro. He is currently Cuba’s deputy prime minister and minister of foreign trade and foreign investment.
Pérez-Oliva leaped into the spotlight this month after announcing potentially one of the biggest policy shifts since the Castros seized power in 1959: allowing Cuban exiles to own businesses and invest in Cuba.
That showcased Pérez-Oliva as a public face of the regime’s survival strategy. It also ignited talk about whether he could be the Cuban version of Venezuela’s new Trump-friendly leader, Delcy Rodríguez, a younger insider more amenable to the United States who can speak the language of international business and yield to Washington’s

demands.
Those attributes, along with not having “Castro” in his name, could make him palatable to an administration in Washington that prizes regime compliance over regime collapse, some political analysts say.
At the same time, his family ties could allow him to shore up political support among those within Cuba’s power structures who view the Castros as a source of stability and revolutionary legitimacy.
The involvement of so many Castros in the regime’s survival strategy underscores one of the Cuban Revolution’s contradictions: While its communist leaders sought to create a classless, egalitarian society, many of them become members of an elite class.
Still, the possibility of the family at the helm of Cuba’s authoritarian political system retaining its power would disillusion many Cuban exiles in the United States. Some have been pushing for decades for the Castros to be completely sidelined, along with erasing any communist influence in Cuba.
The Castros are known as shrewd negotiators, extricating themselves from tough spots in the past, said Ricardo Zúniga, a former U.S. official who helped broker former President Barack Obama’s opening with Cuba and also served under Trump.
The Obama talks took 18 months, partly because the meetings were held in secret, mostly in Canada, and the negotiating teams were tiny. Those expecting a Venezuela-style outcome in Cuba could also be surprised. Venezuela’s political elite, divided into camps with different economic objectives, was relatively fractious before the capture of Maduro, making it easier for Trump officials to settle on someone like Rodríguez, a technocrat who had already introduced marketoriented reforms aimed at improving Venezuela’s economy.
Cuba’s elite, in contrast, is far more cohesive after decades of purges and counterintelligence operations that detected even the smallest signs of dissent. Members of the Castro family have consistently benefited from this system.

Clean energy isn’t dead in the Trump era. But it does look different these days.
Since returning to office, President Donald Trump has dismantled federal efforts to fight climate change and vowed to stop new wind turbines from going up. His administration has canceled billions of dollars in funding for technologies that might one day help reduce planet-warming emissions, and it has instead pushed to expand domestic oil and gas drilling.
Those moves have taken a brutal toll on America’s budding clean energy industry, including canceled offshore wind farms, shuttered electric-car factories and layoffs at climate technology startups.
Yet many clean energy executives say they are finding ways to adapt, and some promising technologies that might help slow global warming are moving forward.
Some industries, such as geothermal energy or nuclear power, still receive support from the Trump administration. Startups that could help cut emissions from factories are figuring out how to survive without federal support. Others, like battery companies, are looking to pitch themselves as a solution for the artificial intelligence and data center boom.
More than 300 startups attended a major annual energy industry summit last week, known as CERAWeek by S&P Global, showcasing ideas for investors and policymakers like advanced batteries that can store power for multiple days and loweremission jet fuel.
“We’ve just gone through an era of radical uncertainty” for clean energy, said Alex Kizer, an executive vice president at the Energy Futures Initiative, a Washington nonprofit organization. “And for a lot of companies, there are big questions on how they’ll evolve going forward.”
‘Wishful thinking’
One big shift is how the industry seeks investments for ideas that could bring major climate benefits. Many executives said they were no longer counting on government subsidies or the goodwill of environmentally minded politicians to support their business.
tics would entirely reorient itself around stopping carbon dioxide emissions, and that’s how we were going to make money,” said Cody Finke, the founder of a startup called Brimstone. “And I think that was wishful thinking.”
When Brimstone was founded in 2019, the company aimed to produce cement with half the carbon dioxide emissions of regular cement by using carbonfree silicate rocks instead of limestone. The Biden administration awarded the company a $189 million grant as part of its push to reduce carbon emissions from heavy industry. But the Trump administration abruptly canceled the grant last year.
Finke said Brimstone hasn’t been deterred. The company recently announced that it had refined its process so it can harvest those same silicate rocks to produce both cement and other valuable industrial materials like alumina, a precursor to aluminum that the United States typically imports. The bet is that by producing multiple products together, Brimstone can become economically competitive with traditional cement-makers.
“If you’re going to solve the climate problem,” Finke said, “you’re going to have to find solutions that just have fundamentally better economics.”
Other companies are making similar bets that they can displace fossil fuels even without government subsidies.
Another startup, AtmosZero, is developing giant heat pumps that can be used instead of gas-fired boilers to generate steam for industrial facilities. The company is testing its technology at a brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado, trying to demonstrate that electrifying can make financial sense for companies — while also being cleaner.
“A decade ago, you might’ve called us clean tech or climate tech, but we’re really focused on the value of electrification,” said Addison Stark, the startup’s CEO. “We want our technology to be cost effective no matter which way the policy pendulum swings.”
New energy winners
Other clean energy firms are increasingly billing themselves as a solution to the AI boom.

Google, Microsoft and Amazon say they are still committed to reducing their overall carbon emissions. That has provided a boost to wind and solar firms that have otherwise faced major obstacles from the Trump administration.
“The reality is that renewables are often the fastest energy source we can deploy,” said Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO of EDP Renewables North America, a leading wind and solar developer. “So even if we have not had very favorable clean energy policy in the last 12 months, we continue to see significant amounts of procurement from corporates and utilities.”
Batteries are also benefiting. Last week, Crusoe, a data center developer, announced major partnerships with Form Energy, which has developed a new type of iron-air battery that can store 100 hours’ worth of electricity, far more than traditional batteries, as well as with Redwood Materials, which is recycling old electric car batteries to provide grid storage.
The Trump administration has largely scorned wind and solar power and has sought to promote fossil fuels like natural gas and coal as the most important nearterm solutions to rising electricity demand. Yet officials have also provided support and money to low-emissions energy sources like advanced nuclear power and next-generation geothermal.
ally, geothermal production was limited to a handful of locations, such as Iceland or California, where companies could easily tap underground hot water reservoirs close to the surface.
But in recent years, some startups — most notably a company called Fervo Energy — have sought to adapt modern drilling techniques from the oil and gas industry to tap underground heat in more places. This has raised hopes that geothermal could offer a vast new source of emissions-free power that, unlike wind and solar, can run at all hours. The industry has also received significant investments from oil and gas firms that have experience with large-scale drilling.
And casualties, too
Trump’s return to office has also brought a lot of clean energy casualties.
Last month, Sublime Systems, a Boston-based clean tech startup, announced that it was laying off two-thirds of its workers. The company had developed a novel process to make carbon-free cement using electricity and signed a deal to produce more than 600,000 tons of cement for Microsoft. With the help of an $87 million grant from the Biden administration, it was building its first factory in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
The Trump administration terminated that grant last year as part of billions of dollars in cuts to Biden-era funding. In a statement, Sublime said the cancellation created “compounding challenges” for financing, and work on the Holyoke facility has paused. The company says it still hopes to build its first factory, whether in North America or Europe, and continues to talk to the Energy Department about restoring its award.
Another technology that has faltered is known as “green hydrogen,” the production of clean-burning hydrogen fuel using wind or solar power. Many firms have abandoned those efforts, in part because the Trump administration has cut funding and because the process requires vast amounts of cheap electricity — electricity that is now being diverted to data centers.
“For years, the clean tech world had a lot of idealistic founders who felt that the rules of capitalism had changed, that poli-
“If you’re a clean energy technology that was depending on cheap grid power for your business, you’re in a lot of trouble right now,” said David Crane, who served as the undersecretary for infrastructure at the Energy Department in the Biden administration. “Especially with how much the hyperscalers are willing to pay for that electricity.” The San Juan Daily Star
Electricity demand is rising for the first time in decades as tech giants build hundreds of energy-hungry AI data centers. Although many are being powered by new natural gas plants, big tech companies like
Geothermal energy, in particular, is emerging as one of the big renewable energy winners of the current era. Tradition-

The Criollos of Caguas and the Atléticos of San Germán were winners on Saturday night to cap off the first week of the 2026 Superior National Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) season.
At Juan “Pachín” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce, the Criollos of Caguas defeated the Leones of Ponce 99-98 in overtime.
Caguas set the pace from the start with an 8-0 run and closed the first quarter leading 23-16, bolstered by their efficiency from the perimeter with five three-pointers in the opening 10 minutes. However, the Leones rallied in the second quarter and took the lead, prompting a constant back-and-forth battle that extended through the contest, which featured 31 lead changes.
In the final seconds of regulation, Travis Trice put the Criollos ahead from the free-throw line; however, Ponce responded following a called timeout, tying the score with less than six seconds remaining and sending the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Trice once again stepped up, this time with a four-point play that gave Caguas the lead. In the closing moments, Louis King scored the basket that put the Criollos in front, and although Ponce had one final opportunity after recovering the ball, they failed to convert their last-ditch attempt.
King led the Criollos with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Trice had 23 points and 7 assists. Alejandro Vázquez led the Leones with 21 points, and Jordan Murphy had 20 points and 12 rebounds.
In San Germán, meanwhile, the Atléticos secured their first home victory by defeating the Indios of Mayagüez 93-72 in a game where the hosts took control in the first quarter and never let up. With the victory, San Germán improved to 3-0 to start the season, while the Indios suffered their second defeat in as many games.
The Indios opened with a 7-2 run, but the Atléticos responded quickly with an 11-2 surge that shifted the momentum of the contest. San Germán closed out the first quarter with a 23-13 lead that it extended to 50-34 at halftime.
The Atléticos stayed in control throughout the second half, building a lead of up to 26 points and entering the final quarter with the game well in hand. As a team, San Germán shot 51% from the field, dominated the boards 40-33, and got 31 points from the bench.
Nick Perkins led the Atléticos with 18 points, while Montrezl Harrell and George Alexander Hamilton added 13 points apiece. Sam Waardenburg led the way for the Indios with 20 points and 7 rebounds.
