The Financial Oversight and Mana gement Board (FOMB) has appro ved three Microsoft Caribbean, Inc. contracts and amendments while warning that government agencies need tighter budget controls to manage rising technology costs.

The most significant action in volved the Puerto Rico Innovation and Technology Service (PRITS), whose cloud‑services contract with Microsoft has nearly tripled since its original approval in 2022. The latest amendment, its fifth, adds $3.5 million to cover unanticipa ted overage expenses for Fiscal Year 2026, bringing the total contract value to $28.9 million. PRITS attributed the increase to “critical technological projects, expansion of digital ser vices, increase in data processing, implementation of new technological solutions, and operational needs,” according to the Oversight Board letter.
The FOMB noted, however, that PRITS has already amended the contract twice because of excess costs. It di rected the agency to strengthen contract management and budget controls. PRITS certified that the additional costs will be paid with General and Special Revenue Funds allocated for Fiscal Year 2026.
The Department of Education (DE) also received an “approved with observations” determination for its first amendment to a major Microsoft licensing and cloud services contract. The amendment adds $16.3 million for Fiscal Year 2027, doubling the contract’s value to $32.5 million. The original agreement, approved last year, covers software and

Puerto Rico House Speaker Carlos “Johnny” Méndez announced the death of Juan Benabe Guzmán, the first New Progressive Party (NPP) mayor of Luquillo, elected in the historic 1968 general election.
Benabe Guzmán served as mayor from 1969 to 1972 and again from 1977 to 1984.

cloud services for teachers, students, and administrative personnel through June 2028.
The DE justified the procurement as an exceptional purchase, citing Microsoft’s exclusive ownership of the ne cessary intellectual property. The agency certified that Fiscal Year 2027 costs will be paid entirely with General Funds. The Oversight Board reminded the department that any extensions must be submitted for review and that an updated Fund Availability Certification is due by July 15.
The third Microsoft contract reviewed last week invol ves the Courts Administration Office, known as OAT, which requested approval for a four-year, $13.7 million renewal of Microsoft licensing services. OAT said the contract did not go through a competitive procurement process because Microsoft is the sole manufacturer and owner of the services.
The agreement runs from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2030. It includes $11.5 million for enterprise and cloud enrollment and $2.17 million for SQL Server and CIS Suite services. OAT certified that the first year will be funded through a mix of General and Special Revenue Funds already budgeted for Fiscal Year 2027. The Board said funds appear sufficient for the first year, but OAT must ensure future budgets include all contract costs and request another review if any changes occur.
Across all three agencies, the Oversight Board emphasi zed that its review is limited to compliance with Section 204(b) (2) of PROMESA and is not a legal or procurement audit. Even so, the Board warned that inaccuracies or misrepresentations could lead it to reassess the contracts and refer matters to the appropriate authorities.
1968 marked the beginning of an administration focused on expanding public services and improving residents’ quality of life.
Among his most significant accomplishments were the creation of Luquillo’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center (CDT) with 24 hour medical services, the construction of parks and sports facilities throughout the municipality, the expansion of recreational programs, and the founding of the Luquillo Municipal Band, which provided instruments free of charge.
“We mourn the passing of a public servant whose legacy remains deeply felt in Luquillo decades after lea ving office,” Méndez said. “He was an honorable leader, a devoted family man, and a proud son of Luquillo who worked tirelessly for the well being of his community. Our prayers are with his family and friends.”
Born on May 15, 1925, in Luquillo, Benabe Guzmán became one of the founding members of the PNP under the leadership of Luis A. Ferré. His election as mayor in
He also promoted education by helping secure the construction of Isidro A. Sánchez High School and Camilo Valles Matienzo Elementary School, while supporting higher education opportunities through Puerto Rico Junior College and the University of Turabo.
His administration also expanded affordable housing with projects including El Cemí, Yukiyú, Playa Azul, Alamar, and the Sandy Hills residential development.
Benabe Guzmán is remembered as a pioneering pu blic servant whose leadership left a lasting impact on the development of Luquillo.

At-large Rep. Tatiana Pérez Ramírez has introduced a package of legislative measures to address sediment buildup, declining water storage capacity, and structural deterioration affecting Puerto Rico’s major reservoirs.
The initiatives seek to strengthen the island’s water infrastructure at a time when studies warn that Puerto Rico continues to face recurring droughts, while reservoirs are losing usable capacity due to sediment accumulation, erosion, and invasive vegetation. Those conditions have worsened in recent years following the impact of major hurricanes.
Among the measures is Joint Resolution 26-2026, formerly House Joint Resolution 47, which the governor has signed. The resolution directs the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority, the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, and the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority to seek federal funds to dredge reservoirs under their administration.
The resolution calls for a continuous maintenance-dredging model designed to remove more sediment than is deposited annually, allowing reservoirs to gradually recover their water-storage capacity. It also requires the agencies to collect
hydrological data in coordination with the U.S. Geological Survey, identify applicable federal funding with the Central

Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resiliency, and submit a compliance plan within 180 days.
The legislative package also includes House Bill 1305, which would require the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources and the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority to prepare a 10-year dredging plan. The bill also proposes an interagency program for water collection in high-elevation areas, reforestation with native vegetation, and erosion-control efforts in watersheds.
House Resolutions 610 and 128 would order investigations into reservoir sedimentation, dam conditions, and actions taken by the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority and the Electric Power Authority to restore storage capacity. According to the measures, some reservoirs have lost between 27 percent and more than 50 percent of their useful capacity due to long-term sediment accumulation and limited maintenance.
“If we want to ensure Puerto Rico never lacks water, we must act with vision and responsibility,” Pérez Ramírez said. “Our reservoirs have endured decades of sedimentation, erosion, and neglect. With these measures, we are addressing the root cause of the problem and beginning to restore the infrastructure that supports the daily lives of every family.”

Representative José “Conny” Varela announced today the filing of a House Resolution to direct the Government Committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the Department of Health’s decision to cancel and not renew the security services contracts with Genesis Security Services, Inc. at the Ramón Ruiz Arnau University Hospital.
The measure seeks to examine the economic and operational criteria justifying the transfer of these services to other companies, given that Genesis’s proposal had previously been identified by the agency itself as the most advantageous for public funds.
The decision comes after the Department of Health
publicly revealed its decision not to renew Genesis’s contract at the University Hospital, and amid the apparent intention to transfer security services for the Central Offices to other corporations. According to leaked information, the new providers’ contractual costs would be higher than the rates historically offered by Genesis, and some even suggest that certain programs would be transferred to a company publicly accused of potentially overbilling the government.
“There is a duty to guarantee transparency, legality, and good governance in all public contracts. If the Department of Health concluded less than a year ago that maintaining services with this company was the most cost-effective alternative, this abrupt change of direction without a clear fiscal impact analysis is questionable and highly contradictory,” said the representative for Caguas.
The resolution highlights the contradiction in the Department of Health’s actions, recalling that in July 2025, the agency’s own secretary, Víctor Ramos Otero, explained that they had analyzed dividing security services among several companies, but concluded that fragmentation would result in a higher cost for the people of Puerto Rico. Based on that study, the Department of Health decided to renew the contract with Genesis at that time.
“We must be vigilant against potential negligent or corrupt actions in public administration. This is the type of government action that raises suspicions in Puerto Rico. This administration has become a factory of scandals and corrupt dealings surrounding contracts. We are demanding transparency and respect for public funds. The Secretary of Health must answer for this,” Varela stated.

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón, as part of the Cumpliendo Contigo initiative, visited the municipality of Ceiba with several agency heads to address priority projects aimed at advancing the town’s development.
During the visit, officials highlighted plans by Department of Economic Development and Commerce Secretary Carlos J. Ríos Pierluisi to support the development of Roosevelt Roads. They also underscored coordination between the Government
of Puerto Rico and the municipality to continue attracting private investment, strengthen Ceiba’s competitiveness and expand economic development opportunities in the region.
González Colón also joined Amy Vega, administrator of the Administration for the Care and Comprehensive Development of Children, to inspect Ceiba’s Two-Generation Center, a project focused on child development, for which state and federal funds have been invested in new equipment.
Separately, the governor, along with Ceiba Mayor Samuel Rivera and Housing Secretary Luis Augusto Martínez, inspected
work at the public plaza, a $4.6 million project officials said will help spur economic development in the town center. At the end of the meeting, González Colón said the work model will continue in other municipalities as part of her administration’s strategy to maintain direct follow-up on priority projects and ensure effective coordination between agencies and municipal governments. “Our commitment is to work alongside mayors so that projects move forward, are completed and translate into better services, greater economic activity and a better quality of life for citizens,” the governor said.

The Department of Health urged stronger prevention measures during the summer after reporting 6,124 pediatric emergency room visits due to injuries so far in 2026.
Health Secretary Víctor Ramos Otero stressed that many of these emergencies can be prevented through proper supervision and basic safety practices.
“As a pediatrician, I know that many of the emergencies we treat during the summer can be avoided,” he said in written statements, joining the University Pediatric Hospital and the Puerto Rican Pediatric Society in promoting the campaign “A Safe Summer: Protect Our Children.”
According to the Syndromic Surveillance

Health Secretary Víctor Ramos, together with Dr. Nérian Ortiz, director of the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical Sciences Campus School of Medicine and president of the Puerto Rican Pediatric Society, called on parents and caregivers to strengthen safety measures to protect children during the summer season.
System, the cases involve minors between 0 and 19 years old. Most visits were related to head injuries (5,257), followed by chest injuries (315), neck injuries (289), burns (182), heat-related illnesses (71), and 10 unintentional drowning cases.
Ramos Otero warned that just a few seconds of distraction near water, prolonged heat exposure, or lack of protective gear can lead to severe consequences.
The Department of Health reiterated that drowning remains one of the leading causes of death from unintentional injuries among children, especially those between 1 and 4 years old.
Recommendations include assigning a designated adult to supervise water activities,

Representatives of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) Denis Márquez Lebrón , Adriana Gutiérrez Colón and Nelie Lebrón Robles filed House Bill 1333 to establish clear limits on the delegation of powers by the governor and to prohibit people who have lobbied in the last 15 years from receiving delegated powers.
The measure would repeal Law 104 of 1956 and replace it with new legislation that expressly defines which powers of the governor can be delegated and which must remain non-delegable by constitutional or legal provision.
The bill limits delegations to administrative coordination, monitoring, and implementation of public policy. It also prohibits delegating powers related to public procurement, personnel appointments and actions, budget management, and other functions assigned by law to agency heads, executive

The proposal also establishes that only officials confirmed by the Senate may receive delegated powers, incorporates rules of transparency, accountability and disqualification for conflicts of interest, and prohibits former lobbyists from exercising such functions.
Márquez Lebrón argued that the measure is a response to years of excessive delegations of power through executive orders, which, he said, have concentrated authority beyond what is permitted by law. As an example, he cited the Secretary of the Governor’s Office, Francisco Domenech, whom he described as an unelected official who has accumulated broad powers without proper legislative oversight.
Gutiérrez Colón indicated that the project seeks to prevent partisan or private political interests from prevailing over sound public administration, while Lebrón Robles highlighted that the initiative strengthens transparency and governmental

González Colón dedicated Saturday’s commemorative events marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States to the cause of statehood.
“Today I made a very conscious decision. I chose to dedicate this commemoration to statehood—not because this is a partisan event, and not because we are celebrating a political victory as statehood has had on several occasions, but because I am convinced there is no better way to honor the principles that gave rise to the United States 250 years ago than by reaffirming our commitment to the principle that summarizes them
all: equality,” González Colón said in her remarks.
“We believe in statehood because we are convinced that our identity is so strong that it does not depend on a political status. We will continue being the island of music, the island of our culture, our faith, our traditions, and the immense pride we feel in calling ourselves Puerto Rican. That is why we dedicate these 250 years to the commemoration of equality and the pursuit of statehood,” she added.
The official ceremonies were held at the Plaza de los Alcaldes in San Lorenzo, with state and federal officials, members of the Armed Forces, veterans, community leaders, and citizens in attendance to mark the historic occasion.

Patriotism met partisanship as America celebrated its 250th birthday.
President Donald Trump used July 4 to mock the Democratic Party and assail his political opponents as “evil,” while Democrats seen as potential 2028 presidential candidates responded with speeches that cast his presidency as a betrayal of American ideals.
“This is one man trying to do to our American self-government what no king and no foreign power has ever managed to do,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat considering a run for the White House, said of Trump. The governor’s speech focused heavily on the president’s 2020 election falsehoods and efforts to reshape election rules before the midterms.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, another potential 2028 Democratic contender, said that “the very premise of patriotism is under attack.” He did not mention Trump by name in the speech but repeatedly alluded to him.
For ambitious politicians in both parties, the holiday weekend offered an opportunity to outline mission statements for their brands of politics, while tying them to traditional notions of patriotism.
America’s 250th birthday came at a particularly polarized moment. Politicians have long used July 4 as a backdrop to make political appeals and engage with voters, but historians said Trump’s aggressively partisan, personalized approach to the holiday was unique.
Some Democratic-led states refused to participate in the Trump-backed Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington, another illustration of the stark divides in the country.
Former President Bill Clinton issued a statement saying that he was concerned about the “deep division” in the country. He argued that the Trump administration had brought the country “close to the edge” with its immigration crackdown and what he described as an “unconstitutional war” with Iran. He said he found hope in people lining up to vote.
Newsom argued in his speech, filmed in the Governor’s Mansion in Sacramento, California, and released Saturday afternoon, that Trump embodied the “very behaviors our Founding Fathers fought against.”
Newsom said he was working with state lawmakers to create new safeguards blocking the seizure of ballots, accusing Trump of “measuring how far he can go” to undermine elections and “shred” the Constitution.
In Georgia, the focus of many of Trump’s efforts to reverse the 2020 election, the FBI is assigning investigative analysts to check records, and in California a Republican sheriff this year seized hundreds of thousands of ballots from a 2025 election. Trump has also made baseless claims about election fraud in the race to replace the term-limited Newsom.
Moore, speaking to a roomful of military veterans at the Maryland State House in Annapolis, widened his focus beyond the electoral system.
Moore spoke of a “rewriting” of U.S. history under an administration that has banned books and purged records related

to diversity and inclusion. He said the “politics of today feel like a grift.” And the governor, an Army veteran who has often criticized Trump over the war in Iran, declared that “starting a war without a purpose is not patriotic” and that “ending a war without achievement is not victory.”
In an interview after the speech, Moore left little doubt that the president weighed heavily on him as he drafted his remarks. He said he wanted to offer a rebuttal to a strain of “small,” grievance-fueled nationalism that he said Trump exemplified.
July 6, 2026 5 Dr. Alberto R. Costa Berríos
“I wanted the country to remember how big this country is,” Moore said, urging Americans to embrace patriotism centered on service rather than what he said was a nationalistic impulse to point “fingers at others.”
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Clinton’s statement or on the Democratic governors’ speeches. But as Moore was beginning his remarks, Trump wrote on social media, “Has anyone ever seen a Happy Dumocrat?” Trump also mocked a pair of Democrats running in marquee Senate races.
A day earlier, Trump delivered a dark, partisan speech at Mount Rushmore, describing his political opponents as “godless” communists and saying that Republicans could only lose the midterm elections if they were “stupid and unwise.”
Communism, the president said, is the “enemy of July 4, 1776.” He has falsely suggested that democratic socialists who have won in a recent Democratic primary election are communists.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a rising leader on the left who endorsed three victorious self-described democratic socialists in recent House primaries in New York, also delivered a speech tied to Independence Day.
In remarks from City Hall on Friday, Mamdani, surrounded by recently naturalized immigrants, critiqued what he described as a blind form of patriotism that he said fails to grapple with the country’s flawed history and takes a mistaken view of what makes the country exceptional.
“We are told that America is exceptional because we are richer, stronger, more powerful than everyone else,” said Mamdani, a Ugandan-born immigrant. “The truth, my friends, is that America is exceptional because here nothing is fixed into place.”
On Saturday, Vice President JD Vance pushed back in a speech that appeared to be in direct dialogue with Mamdani’s. He criticized those who, he said, speak “obsessively not of our national greatness but of our national imperfections.” And he dismissed what he said was “zero-sum” thinking that pits the powerful against the powerless and that finds pride only in the defeats of the well-off.
“Reject the two-dimensional view of your fellow citizens and reject the two-dimensional view of your country,” Vance, who is considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate, said aboard the USS Kearsarge in New York Harbor, within a few miles of where Mamdani spoke a day earlier. “Reject the view of your nation that sees only its sins, but not its grace and its greatness.”
Julian E. Zelizer, a Princeton University history professor, said that politicians throughout American history had used Independence Day as an opportunity to articulate “what they stand for and what their parties stand for.”
Zelizer said that “the politicians who are smart” would find a way to acknowledge the country’s divisions and show “what they’re going to try to do to try to close them.”

Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, could be charged after he struck a parked car with his convertible on Friday in Northern California, police said.
The crash occurred in Napa County, where the Pelosis have a home, and is being investigated by the Napa County Sheriff’s Office. In a news release about the incident, the agency said that no one had been in the car that was struck
and that a witness said that the driver of the convertible had stopped briefly after striking the car before leaving the scene.
The sheriff’s office said Pelosi told investigators that he knew he had hit something but didn’t know what and that he kept driving his car, which police found stopped a short time later.
Amanda Bevins, a lawyer for Pelosi, said she had no comment on the incident.
Pelosi wasn’t taken into custody, and the sheriff’s office said it sent the case to the Napa County District Attorney’s
Office, which will decided what, if any, charges to file.
The sheriff’s office said that, given Pelosi’s age, a request would be submitted to the DMV to evaluate his ability to drive.
Pelosi has been involved in other car crashes. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with a crash in Napa County. He was sentenced to eight hours of community service and placed on probation for three years.

The Brooklyn Bridge briefly caught fire during a Fourth of July fireworks display on Saturday night. Video footage showed several fires burning on the bridge soon after the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Show began in New York City, just after 9 p.m. The Police Department said no injuries were reported.
A New York Times photographer in Manhattan saw billowing flames coming from at least four spots on the bridge’s walkway, in places where fireworks were being set off. As the fireworks show concluded, a water truck was putting out the fires.
After the fireworks show ended, flashing red flights from emergency vehicles could be seen in the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge.
A call about a fire on the bridge came in at 9:32 p.m., the Police Department said. No injuries had been reported. Police officials said that the burning was “very likely” ignited by fireworks.
By shortly after 10 p.m., the fire appeared to have been extinguished, officials said.
the incident on Friday detected no alcohol, the sheriff’s office said.
In 2022, Pelosi, a real estate and technology investor, suffered two skull fractures after a man broke into the couple’s home in San Francisco and beat him with a hammer. The man, David DePape, was convicted on state and federal charges and is serving a life sentence in state prison.
When Pelosi was 16, he was behind the wheel of a car that crashed. His brother, a passenger, was killed.

The bridge remained closed to traffic shortly before 10:30 p.m., with emergency vehicles blocking all lanes. An officer guarding the entrance to the bridge said it was closed to foot traffic, too. Shortly
before 11 p.m., some emergency vehicles had left the bridge.
Sharanika Akter, 33, came from Queens to watch the fireworks show over the Brooklyn Bridge with her husband.
“Nobody panicked” in the large crowd on Old Fulton Street, she said. But many who had been recording the show kept their videos rolling as smoke rose from the bridge.
“Honestly, we were all pretty relaxed,” Akter said. “I thought it was pretty small, from my view from the ground.”
Having traveled to lower Manhattan from the Bronx and struggled to find a
clear vantage point to watch the fireworks, Llurate Cekaj and her daughter, Kledisa Cekaj, hoped to redeem the night with a cool stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge. The Police Department prevented them from making the trek, because of the fire.
“I wanted to walk, this night is so nice,” Cekaj, 39, said. “Now we came for nothing.”
Kledisa, 14, said: “I’m really disappointed.”
Love Majewski was watching the fireworks from Manhattan, close to the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge, when she was surprised to see orange flames.
“I saw this weird fire, flames that came out of nowhere,” said Majewski, 53, who lives in Manhattan and had appeared on the TV show “Mob Wives.”
Majewski said that she sensed something was out of control when she saw flames growing in between what appeared to be meticulously timed fireworks blasts. She said that tourists around her couldn’t tell that something was wrong.
“It was very obvious that, for native New Yorkers, it was not part of the show,” Majewski said. “This is not usual, this is out of control.”
As midnight approached, the flashing lights of police vehicles could still be seen blocking the Brooklyn Bridge from the Manhattan side.
Rainfall dissolved the steady crowd of people who through the night had approached the bridge, hoping to take it to Brooklyn. A few uniformed Police Department officers were still posted, turning scraggly, wet pedestrians away.

Journalist Michael Kinsley once defined a political gaffe as when a politician inadvertently speaks the truth. Last week, Vice President JD Vance posted a classic of the form on the social platform X, part of an attempt during an all-night effort to get the Senate, a chamber his party controls by a comfortable margin, to pass President Donald Trump’s misbegotten domestic policy agenda.
“The thing that will bankrupt this country more than any other policy is flooding the country with illegal immigration and then giving those migrants generous benefits,” Vance wrote. “The OBBB fixes this problem. And therefore it must pass.”
“Everything else — the CBO score, the proper baseline, the minutiae of the Medicaid policy — is immaterial compared to the ICE money and immigration enforcement provisions,” he continued.

The bill contains about $45 billion for new immigrant detention centers and nearly $30 billion to supercharge Immigration and Customs Enforcement, whose masked agents have been

hunting down immigrants in the country without legal permission, sometimes suiting up in tactical gear fit for an assault on Fallujah to round up day laborers in hardware store parking lots.
a pledge to round up and deport immigrants lacking permanent legal status who have been accused of serious crimes. This proposition, according to some polls, still commands majority support. But as his vast program of deportation has ensnared people who have no criminal records, shredded due process to expel people to foreign prisons, seen the temporary detainment of U.S. citizens and begun constructing a prison camp in the fetid Everglades to disappear still more, support for the deportation regime has slumped. More than half of Americans said ICE has “gone too far” in one recent poll. In another, 61% opposed the $45 billion for detention centers.
So here comes Vance with a new proposition: You can only have more of these deportations you may not even want if you sell out your neighbors’ health care and food stamps to keep giving the plutocrats a tax break.
The bill has already been stripped of pretty much all its supposedly populist economic elements. Tiny bits of populist tinsel cling to this superannuated Christmas tree — as far as I can tell, that consists mainly of tax-free tips for some workers — but its main ornament is what Republicans have long pressed on an unwilling citizenry: extending huge, deficit-exploding tax cuts for the richest Americans and the companies that feed their wealth.

In truth, that $75 billion is small beer compared with the true heart of the bill: extending roughly $3.8 trillion of tax cuts enacted in 2017 with some changes, in an overall package that would overwhelmingly benefit wealthy Americans. This bonanza comes at the cost of slashing Medicaid and food stamps for the poorest Americans.
The latest Congressional Budget Office score found that the bill would cause “7.6 million more Americans to be uninsured at the end of a decade, while reducing federal spending on health care by more than $800 billion,” my New York Times newsroom colleagues reported, a relative drop in the bucket compared with the overall price tag of the tax cuts. The latest CBO estimate found that the bill would still add $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.

Indeed, Vance’s statement illuminated the real truth of Kinsey’s quip. A true Washington gaffe is always a confession, and Vance’s is this: Trumpist populism offers its adherents nothing but the demonization and expulsion of immigrants. In return, generations of Americans will be left sicker and deeper in debt.

Aone of pop’s great
fter the man in a dark cashmere sweater and tortoiseshell glasses sat down at a piano and leaned into the microphone, his first words were a declaration: “Sedaka’s back … again!”
It was late March and the lounge at Vitello’s — an oldschool Italian restaurant in the heart of Studio City, California — was packed for a show by the irrepressible 86-year-old singer and songwriter Neil Sedaka. He had booked a series of semiregular Sunday night appearances here to mark the golden anniversary of his professional resurrection.
Fifty years ago, Sedaka completed one of the most remarkable comebacks in pop music. A smiling star of the teen idol era, he’d made his name with run of hummable hits — “Oh Carol,” “Calendar Girl,” “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen,” “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” — but his bubbly tunes, sung in a high tenor, were soon swept away, first by the arrival of the Beatles and then by the turmoil of the 1960s.
In the difficult years that followed, Sedaka lost his fortune, his record deal and his sense of self. At his lowest, he would walk down the street and people would ask: “Didn’t you used to be Neil Sedaka?”
In the early ’70s, Sedaka exiled himself to England, where he gradually rebuilt his career, playing small clubs as he rediscovered his muse and a new group of collaborators. A fellow piano man and avowed fan, Elton John, eventually midwifed his return to the American charts in 1975, helping release the hit LP “Sedaka’s Back,” which has just been reissued in a deluxe vinyl package.
Onstage at Vitello’s, Sedaka introduced the songs that heralded his second coming — “Laughter in the Rain,” “Bad Blood,” “Love Will Keep Us Together” — and beamed as he recounted his journey from the top to the bottom and back again.
“You see,” he said, a note of pride in his lilting Brooklyn accent, “I’m a survivor.”
On a sunny summer morning a few weeks later, Sedaka settled into his office in the expansive West Hollywood apartment that he and his wife of nearly 63 years, Leba, have called home since 1976, for a video interview. He remains a furious ball of showbiz energy, telling stories, dropping names and singing snatches of his songs with an infectious zeal.
It was a combination of precocious charm and prodigious talent that landed the Brooklyn, New York-bred Sedaka a scholarship to Juilliard, but he gave up his classical pursuits after hearing the Penguins’ 1954 hit “Earth Angel,” and instead learned his trade as a pop songwriter in the style of the Brill Building. “Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, I played a lot of that at Juilliard, so it had an influence,” Sedaka said. “At the Brill Building, we were taught hooks, and how to deliver hooks in the right manner, in the right style, with the right harmonics.”

Along with his songwriting partner Howie Greenfield, Sedaka wrote the Connie Francis hit “Stupid Cupid,” before stepping out as a solo artist, making the Top 20 with “The Diary” in 1958. Over the next five years, Sedaka sired a succession of smashes, becoming RCA’s second biggest star behind Elvis Presley. But his fortunes started to wane in 1963, and in 1966 the label dropped him. Worse, he discovered that his mother’s boyfriend, who had been managing him, had run through his savings.
Sedaka was back to plugging his songs and playing piano on other artist’s recording sessions. “I would come into a session, and they would say, ‘Neil Sedaka?! What are you doing here?’” he recalled. “But I had a wife and two kids, so every penny counted. And it was still a way of expressing myself as a musician.”
The latter half of the ’60s saw Sedaka effectively sidelined as pop rapidly evolved from beat music to psychedelia, country-rock to the singer-songwriter movement. “I missed it. I missed it with a vengeance,” he said. “I listened to the radio and thought what do I have to do? No more of the trala-las and do-be-dos, which I was the king of. I wanted to be an artist that fit into the culture of the time.”
His first attempt at a comeback, the 1971 singer-songwriter collection “Emergence,” flopped. At the suggestion of his booking agent, Sedaka moved to England that fall, where he could earn a living playing a circuit of working men’s clubs, including the Batley Variety Club near Leeds. “I

sang all the old hits for them, that’s all they knew,” he said. “But the people were very nice, so I started to put some of the new songs in.”
At the Batley, Sedaka was approached by the music manager Harvey Lisberg with an offer to work up material at Strawberry Studios, where his clients — Graham Gouldman, Lol Crème, Kevin Godley and Eric Stewart, soon to become the hit pop band, 10cc — could back him, in hopes of reviving his recording career.
The Sedaka/10cc collaboration produced immediate chemistry, and a couple of hit albums in the U.K., including “Solitaire” from 1972 and “The Tra-La Days Are Over” the next year. Gaining momentum, he was soon playing bigger venues in England, though he remained without a U.S. label. Fate intervened backstage at a Bee Gees concert when Sedaka met Elton John.
“He told me he was a big fan, that he’d bought all my early records,” Sedaka said. A few days later John turned up at Sedaka’s Mayfair apartment. “Elton came in dressed in all his regalia, and he sat and played, ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,’ which he’d just written. Then he asked: ‘What have you been doing?’ and I played him ‘Laughter in the Rain’. He said, ‘That’s a hit! We’ve got to get you on my label.’”
John’s company compiled the best of his recent albums on “Sedaka’s Back,” as the star began a personal campaign on Sedaka’s behalf. “I was so committed to relaunching his career,” John recalled in 2009, “that he used to call me ‘the most expensive publicist in the world!’”
In early 1975, just as Sedaka prepared to play a threenight stand at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, “Laughter in the Rain” reached No. 1 in the U.S. After 12 long years, he was back on top of the charts, on top of the world, kick-starting a triumphant year that included the Captain & Tennille’s version of “Love Will Keep Us Together” rising to become a Grammy winner. “It was a wonderful moment,” he said, as his eyes glistened at the memory.
At the end of Sedaka’s show at Vitello’s — as the PA blasted his own music — he rose from the piano bench and started to work the room: shaking hands with the men in the audience, kissing their wives, miming to the songs and dancing his way through the crowd.
“My voice isn’t what I used to be,” he admitted, noting he’s a perfectionist. “It was very hard for me, but it was wonderful. You could feel the love in the room.”
His last major compositional effort, a 2016 piano concerto called “Manhattan Intermezzo,” was a return to his earliest roots. (Billy Joel, another piano-based songwriter, did something similar in 2001.) “I’m very proud of that,” he said. “Classical is good for the soul — but not so good for the pocketbook.”
In the end, Sedaka doesn’t seem worried about his legacy. “I was born to make music, that was my purpose in life — to spread joy, and to make myself happy,” he said, smiling. “And I’ve done that.”
Investors in the coming week will seek clues about the likelihood of impending interest-rate hikes and early signs of a pivotal earnings season as they gauge the strength of the U.S. stock market’s rally.
The second half of 2026 kicked off this week much the same as the first half ended, with rocky performances of heavyweight technology shares swaying major indexes. Minutes from last month’s eventful Federal Reserve meeting, as well as earnings from Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), and PepsiCo (PEP.O), could provide new signposts for the market whose tech-fueled rally has wobbled in recent weeks.
Tech shares and especially semiconductors propelled the market’s gains in the past few months, with the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX), rising 14.9% in the second quarter that ended Tuesday, its best quarter since 2020.
But more recently, that group has swung dramatically, including with steep declines to end this week. Other sectors have performed well over the past month such as healthcare, industrial and financial stocks, spurring investor hopes of a healthy rotation that leads market gains to broaden.
“That’s something I’ll be keeping my eye on over the next couple of weeks is to see whether or not that broadening continues,” said Joe Mazzola, head trading and derivatives strategist at Charles Schwab. “Or if you do start to see a protracted pullback in some of the technology winners, does that portend the market pulling back overall?”
Investors seek rate clues with Fed minutes
The outlook for interest rates has switched from expectations at the start of this year for equity-friendly rate cuts, to projections of hikes in the coming months. Those rate-hike expectations were pared slightly on Thursday following a cooler-than-expected jobs report.
Hawkish bets had grown following last month’s Federal Reserve meeting, the first led by new chair Kevin Warsh. He emphasized the central bank would focus on delivering price stability, with inflation above the Fed’s 2% annual target. Minutes from that meeting will be released on Wednesday.
Warsh also warned that the central bank would no longer hold the market’s hand and was jettisoning forward guidance on what actions the Fed might take in the near term. That could make minutes of future Fed policy meetings more important.
“I think it’s going to be interesting to see how the discussion went around the table, how incrementally hawkish are they leaning,” said Matthew Miskin, co-chief investment strategist at Manulife John Hancock Investments.
“That’s what investors and markets are going to be wondering: What is this new Fed chairman and updated (Fed policymaking body) looking for to decide the path of rates from here?”
A key topic, investors said, is how Fed policymakers were thinking about the inflationary impact of energy prices, which heading into the meeting had been receding from Iran war-related spikes. Another is the extent of any division among Fed officials.

Higher interest rates can pressure equities by raising borrowing costs for consumers and companies, and by translating into higher bond yields, making bonds potentially more attractive than stocks.
Fed fund futures late on Thursday suggested roughly even odds that the central bank would raise rates by its September meeting, according to LSEG data. Thursday’s Labor Department data showed U.S. job growth slowed sharply in June, calming some market fears about a near-term rate hike.
“If the Fed does become more restrictive and starts into a tightening cycle, that is a risk to the market and the valuations,” said James Ragan, co-CIO and director of investment management research at D.A. Davidson. “The more information we can get about how the Fed is thinking about things, I think that’s very important.”
Pivotal earnings season looms
In a relatively light week ahead for U.S. economic data, services and manufacturing activity releases could help

clarify inflation trends.
Stocks rebounded in recent months from declines stemming from the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. The S&P 500 is up more than 9% in 2026, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC), has gained 11%.
Surprisingly strong first-quarter corporate profits underpinned the market’s climb and raised the bar for secondquarter reporting season, which heats up later this month.
Two early reports come next week: Delta and snacks and beverage maker PepsiCo, which offer different perspectives on consumer-spending trends.
Overall, S&P 500 companies are expected to increase second-quarter earnings by more than 24%, according to LSEG IBES.
“If the north star of this bull market is earnings, I think the main thing for the earnings season is just to validate the earnings trajectory for this year and that the upward momentum continues into next year,” said Keith Lerner, chief investment officer at Truist Advisory Services.

The soaring high-rises between the mountain and the sea were a deliberate statement, built by Venezuela’s socialist president, Hugo Chávez, as a promise to house the poor in dignity.
But now, as residents claw through the rubble of the buildings after back-to-back earthquakes, many have turned their anger toward the government, accusing it of building shoddy apartments for political gain.
When the earthquakes ripped across Venezuela’s northern coast last month, public housing in the state of La Guaira, a gateway to Caracas, the capital, became some of the densest pockets of death.
Massive buildings, home to thousands of people, crashed to the ground, leaving valleys of dust and destruction. Town homes in a sprawling complex named for Chávez crumbled like toy houses. Some burst into flames.
The devastation has raised questions about the government’s role in the loss of so many lives in structures that building experts had warned for years could not withstand a major earthquake.
Construction experts who know La Guaira have revived long-running concerns about the terrain the complexes were built on, the quality of their materials and the integrity of their design. Plans for the buildings began in 2011, just before an election, and construction proceeded hastily, with design details and information about soil tests largely withheld from the public.
In 2017, Enzo Betancourt, then president of the Venezuela College of Engineers, called the structural integrity of the government-built units “a state secret.”
Two days after the quakes hit, Juan Manuel Chirinos stood at the edge of a collapsed tower at one housing unit, looking for his son, also called Juan Manuel, 32. All around him, people were hammering away at the rubble, desperately trying to find signs of life.
“These people weren’t killed by the disaster,” said Chirinos, who was also searching for his son’s wife and their two children. “They were killed by the government because they built these buildings like garbage.”
The apartments were built under a state program named Misión Vivienda. It was a showcase piece of Chávez’s revolution, meant to “break the capitalist logic that commodified the home,” according to a state website.
The Venezuelan government, now run by Delcy Rodríguez, a leading figure in Chávez’s movement, says that more than 5.5 million homes were built, with more in the works.
“Beyond the number of homes,” says the site, “it is about quality.”
In La Guaira, where some buildings are now marked in red paint for demolition, Misión Vivienda buildings are far from the only apartments to have fallen. Homes built by private contractors for the wealthy and middle class, with names like Coral Beach and Coral Mar, also crashed

to the ground, killing many and raising questions about their integrity.
A representative of Rodriguez’s government declined to respond to questions about the Misión Vivienda buildings. At a news conference Thursday, Rodríguez said that the majority of the buildings that collapsed in La Guaira had not been built by the state.
But the Misión Vivienda complexes stand out because of the extensive amount of destruction in an enormous public-works project that had been a source of concern for years. There were hundreds of apartments in the badly damaged concrete complexes known as OPPE 25, OPPE 26, OPPE 27 and OPPE 33 and roughly 2,500 in the battered Hugo Chávez development. In many cases, large extended families with deep political ties to Chávez inhabited a single apartment.
The Misión Vivienda buildings that fell in La Guaira were built at a time of state largesse, when Venezuela was still relatively flush with oil money. Yet, for more than a decade before the quakes, residents, seismologists and watchdog groups publicized cracks in the walls, problems with safely installing gas lines, and the risk of collapse in the case of an earthquake. In other parts of the country, Misión Vivienda buildings were so poorly constructed that they had to be destroyed years ago.
Many were built by foreign companies with opaque contracts, raising questions about whether designs and materials had been adapted to fit the region’s geographic vulnerabilities.
“There was no technical interest there,” said Guillermo Rivas, the owner of a construction company who has worked in La Guaira for more than 40 years. “The interest there was populism.”
Juan Manuel Chirinos, the missing son, had moved into a Misión Vivienda apartment just four days before the temblors. But many others had lived in public housing
complexes for years, and had been given their homes as a reward for their loyalty to Chávez.
Now these buildings are scenes of chaotic searches and desperate calls for more help from the state.
“We have no tools,” said Willy Bermúdez, 38, a police officer who had lived in OPPE 26 for 13 years. “We’re scraping by with our fingernails.”
The picture was much the same in the Hugo Chávez development — some of the low-slung buildings with blue vinyl siding crumbled completely. Others, while now uninhabitable, merely buckled and leaned. It will take time to understand why this happened.
Mario Lieghio, the president of La Guaira’s construction chamber, said that the state’s enviable position between the mountain and the sea also made it vulnerable to disaster, as silt from the mountain accumulates and softens the earth. While building in La Guaira is possible, he said, it must be done carefully, with detailed soil studies, deep foundations if necessary and materials and designs that can resist quakes.
On Wednesday, he drove through the Hugo Chávez development, pointing to the mountains of flimsy metal and particle board that were used to build the apartments.
“This has to be a lesson,” he said, “a truly gigantic lesson.”
The state had hired a Turkish company, Summa, to build the complex.
“Those people finished a building in less than a week,” said José Luis Sarmiento, a union leader and a construction worker who helped build the Hugo Chávez complex. “We were doing well because we went fast.”
The Turkish firm did not respond to a request for comment.
Just blocks from the Hugo Chávez buildings, the sea sparkled. Some of the development’s residents had relocated to a nearby baseball field, where they had been sleeping in tents.
In other public housing complexes, the search for survivors and the vigil for the dead continued.
Chirinos told his wife that he had watched rescuers recover what appeared to be the bodies of a family of four — possibly his son, his son’s wife and their boys, 8 and 11.
“I saw them,” he said. “They brought them out. They were embracing each other.”
But officials had taken the bodies away, he added, and would not tell him where they were going.
At the OPPE 27 complex, Sergio Castillo, 28, spent three days digging for his cousin, Diego Tovar, 16.
“He never abandoned his cousin,” said Diego’s mother, Milagros Hernández, 43.
On Tuesday, Castillo emerged from the rubble drenched in sweat, carrying Diego’s body.
It was late at night, and he hugged his aunt, her body lit by his headlamp.
“They built this all wrong,” Castillo said. “This shouldn’t have been here; they shouldn’t have put us here.”

Huge crowds of Iranians gathered Saturday to view the casket of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at an elaborate state funeral for the former supreme leader, who dominated Iran for decades before being killed in the U.S.-Israeli war in late February.
Tens of thousands of people began arriving at dawn at the Grand Mosalla mosque in the capital, Tehran, for the start of six days of public ceremonies. Millions are expected to participate in the funeral as Khamenei’s body is transported to cities across the country.
Journalists for The New York Times at the event saw grieving supporters erupt in tears at

the sight of the caskets of Khamenei and several family members who were killed along with him, including his daughter and two grandchildren. Encased in glass and draped in Iranian flags, the caskets were placed atop a stage, with the ayatollah’s coffin positioned above the others.
It is a turbulent moment for Iran, which has spiraled from crisis to crisis. Huge antigovernment protests this year were met with a brutal government crackdown, followed by months of war with the United States and Israel. Israeli airstrikes killed Khamenei, along with other top Iranian leaders, on the first day of the conflict.
While Khamenei’s supporters mourn him, many other Iranians view the lengthy and expensive funeral program with anger. Over 37 years of authoritarian rule, he harshly repressed dissent and allowed economic mismanagement and corruption to fester.
His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was named the country’s new supreme leader. It is unclear whether the son would take part in any of the funeral ceremonies; he has not been publicly seen since his appointment.

Ali Khamenei is being buried only now — more than four months after he was killed — in the wake of a ceasefire that the United States and Iran signed last month. Analysts say Iranian authorities were most likely wary of organizing a mourning event featuring senior leaders when the threat of U.S. or Israeli attacks loomed. Foreign dignitaries, government officials and Iranian-backed militants from across the Middle East paid their respects before Khamenei’s flag-draped casket Friday, according to state media.
Throughout Saturday, the crowd broke
Arash Emrani, 44, a poet, said he was angry at Trump, accusing him of doing something “un-Christian” by waging the war that killed the supreme leader. “It is all very wrong and sad,” he said.
The Times was granted access to the funeral ceremonies by Iran’s government, which determined the ceremonies that the reporters could attend, accompanied by a translator and a guide who were provided by the gover-
nment. The views expressed by people interviewed at these events may not be representative of many Iranians, while others may have felt unable to speak freely.
Temperatures on Saturday climbed above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and the mosque grounds grew increasingly hot. Ambulances and medical workers stood by, and at least one person was seen being carried away on a stretcher. Overhead water sprinklers misted the crowds in an effort to cool people down. Volunteers also distributed water from large tubs packed with ice.
After a procession in Tehran on Monday, the ayatollah’s body will be taken to the city of Qom and then on to Karbala and Najaf in Iraq; all three cities hold sacred significance for Shiite Muslims. On Thursday, his remains will be buried in his hometown, Mashhad.
The event in Tehran was intended as a show of strength for Iran’s Islamic republic, which survived despite U.S. and Israeli hopes for regime change. Conservative supporters of Khamenei said they had slept in their cars overnight to avoid missing the ceremony. But there were signs of criticism from religious hard-liners who see the ceasefire with the United States as a capitulation. Some mourners carried a banner that read, “What happened to revenge for the blood of our martyred Imam?” — a reference to the ayatollah, according to video posted by Iran’s state broadcaster.

Civil Núm.: SJ2026CV01821. Sobre: CANCELACIÓN DE PAGARÉ EXTRAVIADO. SENTENCIA.
