Federal judge orders release of Dominican woman detained illegally by ICE

Rodríguez

Afederal judge in San Juan has ordered the immediate release of Inocencia Rodríguez, a Dominican immigrant whom the American Civil Li berties Union (ACLU) of Puerto Rico says was unlawfully detained by U.S. Immi gration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to ACLU legal director Fermín Arraiza Navas, U.S. District Jud ge María Antongiorgi Jordán issued the order on Friday and instructed federal authorities to hold a bond hearing on or before July 21.

Arraiza Navas said the ruling was a necessary intervention to safeguard Rodríguez’s due process rights after what he described as a discriminatory and un lawful enforcement policy. He added that the judge acted in response to “the refusal and bad faith” of an immigration judge and federal prosecutors who declined to acknowledge in court that Rodríguez should never have been detained.

The ACLU says Rodríguez has both an approved family petition (I‑130) and a

provisional waiver (I‑601A), information that appears in her own federal immigra tion file. Despite this, immigration judge Elvin Talavera Peraza allegedly refused to allow the documents to be verified during a custody redetermination hearing held July 15.

“When the government illegally de tains a person and ordinary mechanisms fail to protect their rights, federal courts have a duty to intervene,” said ACLU of Puerto Rico Executive Director Annette Martínez Orabona.

She emphasized that no one should remain in custody while the government refuses to confirm information already in its possession.

Rodríguez was arrested on July 10 during an ICE operation involving multi ple vehicles and at least eight agents at an access checkpoint in Guaynabo, the organization said.

The ACLU maintains that her deten tion is illegal and has vowed to continue defending Rodríguez and other immigrants whose rights, it argues, are being violated in Puerto Rico.

Remembering an architect of autonomy

The commemoration of Luis Muñoz Rivera’s birth on July 17, 1859 in his hometown of Barranquitas took place on Sunday. Coordinated by the Office of Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández Rivera (left foreground), the event honored “the legacy of a man who transcended his era and continues to inspire our people,” said Sen. Luis Javier Hernández Ortiz (right background), the Popular Democratic Party minority leader in the upper chamber of the Puerto Rico Legislature. “Honoring Muñoz Rivera means embracing the commitment to continue working for our land with honesty, vision, and deep love,” Hernández Ortiz added. Resident commissioner proposes ‘tools’ to put an end to the ‘clique’ in gov’t

Resident Commissioner Pablo José

Hernández Rivera delivered a speech in Barranquitas on Sunday during the commemoration of Luis Muñoz Rivera’s birth, addressing the issue of the “clique” (“la claque”) and how, in his view, it can be combated.

“First, that the people be able to remove the governor before their term ends. The tool for this would be a recall referendum, as exists in 20 states,” Hernández Rivera said. “Second, that we vote by order of preference, as is already done in 49 jurisdictions in the United States; or that a runoff election between the two top candidates be required, as is already done in 13 states. And third, that the people be able to submit and vote on legislation or constitutional amendments via petitions and referendums, as is already done in 26 states.”

“These proposals are a starting point,” he added. “They may all require amending the Constitution. Undoubtedly, the details of

each will require debate and deliberation.”

Hernández Rivera gave examples of what he considers to represent the aforementioned “clique.”

“In 2026, we are not afraid to say that there is a clique that transcends party lines and serves to support and shield the actions of a government that is failing the people,” the resident commissioner said. “We have to call things what they are: there are people in the government who buy, and there are people in Puerto Rico who sell themselves, and we cannot let that behavior become normalized.”

Among those included in “the clique,” he mentioned the politician who uses the budget and staff assignments to buy silence; the one who stays quiet and fails to provide oversight to avoid having their budget cut or staff assignments revoked; the Senate leader who cries foul when staff assignments are taken away -- accusing the government of petty politics and retaliation -- yet shuts the resident commissioner out of his office on a whim; the analyst on the government payroll;

the analyst not on the payroll who attacks the government hoping to be called in and offered something in exchange for silence; the secretary of state who boasts of being able to kill negative press stories; and the media figure who allows that kind of pressure and interference.

“Those are the ones you’ve seen, because they are out there and everyone knows them,” Hernández Rivera said. “But there are others visible only from the inside. Friends who stop being friends because they don’t get an unearned benefit. Strangers who want to befriend you when a good poll comes out. Donors who think they own your conscience. Everyone in this clique is a minority. But it is a troublesome minority that -- when well-positioned, as it is now -- can cause a great deal of damage.”

The resident commissioner also reiterated his call for Gov. Jenniffer González Colón to dismiss embattled La Fortaleza Chief of Staff Francisco Domenech Fernández, who has been included in an expanding inquiry

by the Panel on the Special Independent Prosecutor into allegations of political pressure being applied inside the Office of Permit Management.

Energy czar urges caution as 3 major generation units remain out of service

Puerto Rico Energy Czar Josué Colón Ortiz urged residents on Sunday to reduce electricity consumption as three key generation units remain offline, prolonging a shortage of available capacity during peak demand hours.

The call for prudence came after a major power failure that left more than 130,000 homes without electricity underscored the fragility of the system amid ongoing repairs.

Colón said Genera PR reported at 10 a.m. that the status of Units San Juan 7, Palo Seco 4, and Costa Sur 5 remained critical but was progressing.

In the case of San Juan 7, the unit’s boiler was on, and technical crews were working to correct a mechanical issue in one of the steam turbine’s intercept valves. Once repaired, the unit was expected to begin its startup and synchronization process Sunday.

The official noted that the Palo Seco 4 unit was synchronized to the grid Saturday but during system normalization, technicians detected a problem in the steam turbine condenser. The unit was removed from service for inspection and repairs. After the condition

is corrected, crews were expected to restart the boiler and proceed with synchronization Sunday.

Costa Sur 5, meanwhile, had an active boiler and, once the required steam pressure and temperature were reached, the unit was expected to begin its startup and synchronization process.

Colón warned that until Genera, the private operator of the electric utility’s legacy power plants, completed repairs and synchronized all three units, the system would face a generation deficit during peak hours, which are between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. That shortfall would increase the likelihood of service interruptions if demand were to exceed available supply.

“We ask for prudence in energy consumption to minimize the number of customers affected and the duration of any service impacts while Genera completes the work underway,” Colón said.

The appeal came at a tense moment for the grid. Last week, a sudden generation shortfall triggered widespread outages that impacted more than 130,000 homes in one of the largest interruptions of the summer season.

Late last week, Colón Ortiz said the problems in Unit 6 of Costa Sur were ongoing

and also accused grid operator LUMA Energy in relation to an incident that caused the breakdown in that unit.

The energy czar said the breakdowns at Unit 6, which stemmed from an incident last Thursday night involving a transmission line and related “disturbances that occurred at the 230kv Transmission Center of Costa Sur,” would take two weeks to resolve. He added that his office would “be sending a communication to the private network operator LUMA Energy, LLC., to identify and correct the cause of the disturbance that occurred in the electrical system last Thursday, which resulted in the current operational conditions.”

The initiative will support research in AI applied to resilient energy systems, quantum sensors, secure communi cations, advanced computing and sustainable technologies. It will also expand training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, foster new partnerships among academia, government and industry, and promote innovation and tech nological entrepreneurship.

As part of the project, UPR will award 23 seed grants to support emerging research lines and broaden access to advanced computing resources and scientific infrastructure. The investment is expected to enhance the competitive ness of Puerto Rico’s researchers in future federal grant com petitions, increase student participation in scientific projects and strengthen UPR’s capacity to generate knowledge and solutions with economic, technological and social impact.

Solar developer complains to energy regulator, says PREPA is stalling project

Greenbriar Sustainable Living Inc. and PBJL Energy Corp. have asked the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) to intervene after months of stalled negotia tions with the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), arguing that the delays threaten the viability of their proposed Montalva Solar Farm and Battery Storage Project.

The developers, identified in the proceeding as Pro ponent No. 7, filed a motion on July 16 through CCD Law Group requesting formal relief and a directive compelling PREPA to resume work on the agreements required under the PREB’s accelerated renewable‑energy evaluation process.

The motion is part of a process that governs the ex pedited review of renewable‑energy and storage projects seeking to secure federal Investment Tax Credits. Greenbriar and PBJL say they have complied with every step ordered by the PREB, including submitting updated drafts of the power purchase agreement, the operating agreement, and the energy storage service agreement. Despite this, they argue that PREPA has not responded to their filings, has not provided comments on the proposed contract language, and has not supplied the correct hybrid energy storage

services agreement, or ESSA, version that other proponents have received.

A central point of contention is PREPA’s character ization of the Montalva project as identical to a 2023 Settlement Agreement that covered only a solar facility. The developers insist that the project submitted under the accelerated request for proposals (RFP) is materially different, describing it as a hybrid solar‑plus‑storage installation with a significantly expanded footprint. The new design includes a 40‑megawatt battery system, with the option to expand to 80 megawatts, and a solar field roughly 50% larger than the one contemplated in the legacy agreement. They argue that PREPA’s reliance on the older settlement terms is obstructing progress and contradicts the PREB’s directives.

In their filing, Greenbriar and PBJL ask the PREB to take notice of PREPA’s lack of responsiveness and to order the utility to resume negotiations immediately. They also request that PREPA be required to provide written comments on all submitted documents within five business days and to acknowledge that the Feb. 9, 2026 Best and Final Offer governs the commercial terms of the project. The motion further seeks clarification that the expanded hybrid project qualifies under the accelerated RFP process and should not be

constrained by the terms of the earlier solar‑only settlement. The motion concludes with a certificate of service con firming electronic submission to the PREB and notification to PREPA officials. The PREB has not yet issued a ruling, but the developers warn that continued delays could jeopardize federal tax credit eligibility and slow Puerto Rico’s progress toward its renewable‑energy targets.

Clean energy developers Greenbriar Sustainable Liv‑ ing Inc. and PBJL Energy Corp. insist that the project submitted under an accelerated request for proposals is materially different from one in a 2023 Settlement Agreement that covered only a solar facility, describ ing it as a hybrid solar‑plus‑storage installation with a significantly expanded footprint.

Big Tech is now targeting Native American land for massive data centers

Since its casino closed in 2017, the Caddo Nation, an hour west of Oklahoma City, has struggled, so some Caddo leaders see only hope in the data center boom. “We’re not poor,” Bobby Gonzalez, the Caddo chair, said. “We’re broke.”

But in Binger, Oklahoma, home of baseball legend (and Choctaw) Johnny Bench, Gonzalez bumped into Tracy Newkumet, a former tribal council member who felt differently about a future tied to Big Tech. She could live without a cellphone, she said as she prepared for the Caddos’ traditional turkey dance, but not without water, maybe the biggest concern for data-center development in Indian Country.

The dizzying expansion of data centers to power artificial intelligence has communities in Republican and Democratic states feeling blindsided as citizens and local governments are forced to grapple with noise, water and energy concerns. That division may be even more palpable on Native lands, where outside exploitation has a long and ugly history and where technology companies see a chance for rapid development that gets past the red tape impeding projects elsewhere.

Project Clydesdale, a data center under construction in Tulsa, Okla., on June 19, 2026. The data center boom has roiled communities across the country, but on Native land, a Big Tech push for quick approvals has pitted the need for development against a history of exploitation. (Tamir Kalifa/The New York Times)

The National Congress of American Indians wants to capitalize on the Trump administration’s AI Action Plan to “build, baby, build.”

“Tribal lands, which are vast, strategically located, and home to an eager American workforce, are the ideal place to build the infrastructure that will power America’s AI dominance,” wrote Larry Wright Jr., the Congress’ executive director, to the White House last fall.

Chebon Kernell, a tribal council member for the Seminole Nation, rejected what he called “the false fruits of wealth” that conjure painful memories.

“True wealth is the well-being of our families,” he said during a tour of his family’s cemetery, an hour east of Oklahoma City. “True wealth is being able to live on this Earth Mother without fear and without having to look over one’s shoulders.”

Last fall, at the National Congress’ annual conference in Seattle, activists interrupted an AI panel by chanting, “You can’t drink data!” and “The biggest lie is AI!” Traci L. Morris, executive director of the American Indian Policy Institute at Arizona State University, was onstage and was reminded of when the federal government expanded broadband access to reservations in 2010.

“There were tribes that were like: No, we’re never going to go on the internet,” said Morris, a member of Oklahoma’s Chickasaw Nation. “Well, data centers are here, and tribes need to make a decision.”

The issues have cropped up on Indian lands nationwide. In the Pacific Northwest, the Yakama Nation went to federal court in May to block a clean energy project on a sacred site that would power a data center campus. Honor the Earth,

a national Indigenous group, has kicked off a Stop Data Colonialism campaign featuring an interactive map tracking proposed data centers.

But Oklahoma, which has 38 federally recognized tribes, “is really ground zero,” Morris said.

Among the reasons tech companies find tribal lands so appealing is speed, according to the Payne Institute for Public Policy at the Colorado School of Mines. While energy projects on nontribal lands can face permitting delays of three to 10 years, projects on tribal land often proceed more quickly because tribes wield sovereign authority to handle their own regulations and permitting.

But many tribal leaders are in no rush. Kernell was in Washington, D.C., on business when his wife texted in February to see if he had noticed the very last agenda item at the next Seminole council meeting — approving a nondisclosure agreement with a data center developer.

There was “no consultation, no conversation,” Kernell said, so he hastily organized a town hall that drew dozens of opponents from inside the tribe and outside. Days later, the council, with Kernell on it, unanimously passed a data center moratorium, the first tribe to do so.

Last year, after intense opposition, the council of the Muscogee Nation, 40 miles south of Tulsa, rejected rezoning 5,570 acres from agriculture and meat processing to business for a technology park. Jordan Harmon, a Muscogee lawyer and policy specialist for the Indigenous Environmental Network, pointed to Honor the Earth’s “Stop Data Colonialism Manifesto” that is “completely anti-AI, specifically generative AI

developed by Big Tech.”

“That’s where the community sometimes is in conflict or butting heads with tribal leadership,” she said.

Now all eyes are on the influential Cherokees, the country’s most populous tribe, with 480,000 enrolled members, whose 7,000-square-mile reservation is almost the size of New Jersey.

Two prominent Cherokees — Gov. Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma and Markwayne Mullin, the homeland security secretary, both Republicans — are vocal data center proponents. Mullin, when he was still Oklahoma’s junior senator, called data centers a “game changer,” highlighting a Google hub in Pryor, Oklahoma, that generates millions in tax revenue.

So far, Chuck Hoskin Jr., the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, has been cautious, establishing a task force to study the environmental and economic impacts.

“We don’t want to be on the sidelines, but we don’t want to be bystanders,” he said. “We’re moving probably slower than some governments.”

Even that approach has its detractors. Oklahoma City, Tulsa and other municipalities have paused data center development. State Rep. Brad Boles, a Cherokee member who won last month’s Republican primary for a seat on the state’s regulatory board, shepherded a bipartisan effort to insulate households and businesses from electric bill spikes caused by data centers’ energy demands.

The Colusa Indian Community of Northern California, which has operated its own power plant and electricity grid for two decades, hopes to bridge the gap between skeptical Native Americans and outside tech giants.

“There’s a mistrust of corporate America in general, and we share that mistrust,” said Ken Ahmann, chief operating officer of Colusa Indian Energy, which just opened a Tulsa-area office. “Our charter in this space is to help act as a firewall and a negotiating partner on behalf of the tribes.”

The Colusa are now in talks with the Caddo, among other tribes, to build a power plant for a data center in Oklahoma by the end of the year.

ICE agent defended shooting of immigrant in Maine, ex-wife says

Afederal immigration agent told his former wife that he was the person who fatally shot a Colombian immigrant in Maine last week and defended his actions to her, the ex-wife said.

The woman, Ashley Brouillette, identified the agent as David Brouillette, 37, in an interview Thursday. She said that when she spoke to him Wednesday about the shooting, he said that it was justified.

He told her not to talk to anyone about him, she said, but then asked her to defend his character. “He said, ‘You need to tell them I’m a good person,’” she recalled David Brouillette saying, adding that he asked her not to tell anyone that he had abused her during their marriage. “I told him that I wouldn’t lie for him,” Ashley Brouillette, 37, said.

The Department of Homeland Security has not released the name of the shooter, and a spokesperson for the agency declined to confirm whether David Brouillette had fired the fatal shots, saying that publicizing agents’ names puts them at risk.

Ashley Brouillette said she had spoken to her ex-husband about the shooting and had also seen video and images of him at the scene. Two other people — one a relative who asked not to be identified and another a high school friend of David Brouillette’s — said they also recognized him from video footage and witness photos, but could not confirm that he was the person who fired the fatal shots.

No video shedding light on who fired the fatal shot Monday has emerged. But one

video recorded just after the shooting appears to show another agent consoling Brouillette.

Brouillette was first reported as the agent who fired the shots by The Portland Press Herald.

The man who was killed, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, 25, lived with his partner and 3-year-old daughter in Biddeford, Maine. He had been driving away from his home early Monday morning when agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement confronted him. Multiple gunshots rang out,

leaving holes in the windshield of Durán Guerrero’s car.

Later in the week, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that Durán Guerrero illegally entered the United States on Sept. 1, 2023, via the southern border. Benjamin Gideon, a lawyer representing the family, said on Thursday that Durán Guerrero had been working in the United States lawfully.

A phone number listed in court records as David Brouillette’s has been disconnected, and a message left at another got no response. He did not respond to an email seeking comment.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the ICE agents in Biddeford had been monitoring what they believed to be the residence of someone who was in the country illegally, for whom they had a removal order.

In a statement Monday, the department said an officer had opened fire, “fearing for public safety.”

When Ashely Brouillette spoke to him Wednesday about the shooting, she said, David Brouillette defended it as justified. “I asked him why he did it, and he said, ‘The guy tried to hit me,’” she said.

The statement did not name the person the agents had been seeking, but in the hours after Durán Guerrero was killed, details

emerged to suggest that he was not the target of their search.

Ashely Brouillette, who dated David Brouillette throughout high school and was married to him from 2007 to 2009, said her former husband had become abusive after he joined the military in 2007. She said he had choked her, slammed her to the floor and pushed her against a wall.

David Brouillette’s threats and harassment were so persistent that she left Maine in 2012 to escape him, she said.

Still, she said, he had threatened to kill her as recently as November after she disciplined their daughter by taking away her cellphone. “I have said to people, ‘If I end up dead, it’s him,’” Ashley Brouillette said.

Another woman identified as a former wife of David Brouillette’s in court documents has also accused him of abuse. In a filing for an order of protection in December 2019, obtained by The New York Times, the woman wrote that he had broken her door down, destroyed her belongings and dumped her clothes over a bridge. The filing also said that Brouillette had spit in her face and cornered her in a room.

“I am scared of him coming to my home or sitting in the parking lot of my work until I leave,” she said in the filing.

The woman could not be reached for comment.

Ashley Brouillette said her former husband had post-traumatic stress disorder related to his military service in Afghanistan in 2012 and 2013; in court records, the other woman identified as a former wife also said he suffered from PTSD.

According to Army Public Affairs, he served from 2007 to 2015. He enlisted as a quartermaster and chemical equipment repairer and then served as a medical logistics specialist. He also served in the Maine Army National Guard from 2007 to 2010. From 2010 to 2015, he served as a human intelligence collector in the Army. He left the Army as a sergeant.

He also worked as a police officer for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Maine, Ashley Brouillette said.

Ashley Brouillette said that her former husband should not have been hired to work in immigration enforcement. It was not clear when he joined ICE. “He has mental health issues, he’s short-tempered, he’s reactive,” she said. “He should be in treatment.”

Low-T, high chair

Ordinarily, I love stories of obsession: “Wuthering Heights,” “The Story of Adèle H.,” “Remembrance of Things Past,” “The Caine Mutiny,” “Fatal Attraction,” “The Good Wife,” “Moby-Dick” and the new Generation Z horror hit “Obsession.”

My Netflix algorithm is trained to compulsively hunt for tales of compulsion.

But President Donald Trump has reduced the grandeur of obsession to something pathetic. When you commandeer primetime, or try to, you’d better have something prime to say. Trump didn’t. His speech Thursday was a dud — a batty stew of whiny complaints stemming from an election that he claims was stolen that wasn’t, during a period when he was running the country. If something was wrong, dude, why didn’t you fix it? He still has no proof, and he muddied matters by releasing documents containing information already known and warning about “vulnerabilities” his administration has made worse.

And, if the president believes what he is saying about China being a huge danger to our elections, why hasn’t he retaliated against President Xi Jinping, the man he warmly calls a “friend” and a “great leader”?

Trump seemed very low-T in his East Room address. I’m surprised that Pete Hegseth, who says his “High-T De -

There was barely a peep from Republicans on Capitol Hill about the speech. No organized effort to polish his tirade. You could almost hear the fervent wish of Republican lawmakers watching the president: Please, Donald, move on!

But he can’t. His father’s admonition that there are only “killers” and “losers” plays in a loop in his head, reducing him to jelly.

He is willing to undermine and destroy any institution, law, norm or ideal cherished by Americans in a bonfire of his vanities. He claims to be Christian but mocks the sanctity of human life with his cavalier attitude about Immigration and Customs Enforcement killings. years ago, Trump said after he lost that he expected to be reinstated to the presidency by August 2021.

Usually, the president is able to whip up some Poseidon-level winds of conspiracy to blow his critics off course. But, Thursday night, he seemed impotent, raving about nonsense, threatening to punish ABC and NBC for not taking his weird rant live. He struggled to wield his superpower: creating a fake alternate universe for his supporters. Does anyone believe Trump’s make-believe that “there’s no third world country that has elections like we have”?

(Trump has also failed to convince people that vandals made a gash nearly three football fields long with a boxcutter in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, rather than that his crony contractor applied the liner wrong.)

Even Fox News acted more skittish than sycophantish for a change, not wanting to relive its $787.5 million debacle as part of its settlement with Dominion Voting Systems after claiming its machines switched votes from Trump to Joe Biden.

Aishah Hasnie, a Fox White House correspondent, warned on “Hannity” that the network was “not in a position to evaluate the accuracy of the president’s statements and claims at this time,” echoing almost word for word what Bret Baier had said earlier.

The next morning, Mediaite reported, “Fox & Friends” did not mention the address once in its three-hour show.

Trump’s profiteering in office seems to be breaking through to Americans concerned about their own stretched finances.

After making $2.2 billion in his first year back in office, Trump and his family are jumping on corrupt ways to cash in. His media company is planning to sell faster access to his posts, which in the past have shaken the stock market.

As The New York Times’ Peter Baker wrote, the deeply unpopular Trump “seems intent on laying a predicate that, at the least, could explain away a defeat and, at most, his critics fear, potentially justify direct intervention aimed at changing the results” of future elections.

Five horror movies to stream now

‘Hoagie’

It’s been a notably deep and deranged year for genre films that defy description. (I’m looking at you, “Buffet Infinity.”) I’m pleased to add to that list Matt Hewitt’s wackadoo creature feature comedy that will thrill fans of marauding little monster movies of the ’80s, chiefly “The Deadly Spawn” and “Ghoulies.”

The critter here is Hoagie, a homunculus zygote that a suburban dad named Brendan Bean (Ryan Morley) finds in his trunk. Even though Hoagie has the looks of charred Chucky in “Child’s Play,” he and Brendan strike up a friendship. And why wouldn’t they? Hoagie’s wish-granting powers include materializing pizza out of thin air and decorating a she-shed for Brendan’s wife with AI speed. Unfortunately for Brendan, Hoagie is being sought by Benny Piazza (Stephen Heath, hilarious), a white supremacist who wants to use Hoagie’s powers for global domination. Or something like that.

Despite a few talky detours, “Hoagie” is a freaky thrill ride from an assured filmmaker with an adventurous appreciation of VHS-era practical effects and cutting, disgusting humor that is under no circumstances suitable for kids. If your taste in horror is on the stupid and sicko side, do yourself a favor and eat this “Hoagie” up. (Stream it on Night Flight Plus.)

‘Dead Man’s Wire’

In 1977, an Indianapolis man named Anthony Kiritsis was so distraught over a real estate deal gone wrong that he took hostage Dick Hall, an executive at a mortgage company, and rigged a sawed-off shotgun to Hall’s head that would go off if Hall tried to escape. Kiritsis’ demands included an apology from Hall’s father (Al Pacino) and $5 million. As if this horrific situation weren’t bad enough, parts of the saga were broadcast on television.

The events of that bizarre day are recreated to thrilling effect in Gus Van Sant’s lithe re-enactment starring Bill Skarsgard as Kiritsis and Dacre Montgomery as Hall. Written by Austin Kolodney, the film draws fascinating through lines between real and fictional transgressions — from hostage taking in “Dog Day Afternoon” and death machines in the “Saw” films to the glorification of Luigi Mangione — to explore what happens when desperate humans seek improbable justice.

Skarsgard and Montgomery share a tortured captor-captive energy that throws sparks. Also giving terrific performances are Myha’la as a TV reporter and Colman Domingo as a DJ and hostage negotiator. (Stream it on Netflix.)

‘I Don’t Like It Here’

Two years ago, I got my heart broken by “Grieve,” a devastating horror film from director Robbie Smith that featured a small but memorable turn from actor Jacob Nichols. Smith and Nichols have teamed up again, this time in a darker and more gruesome movie that uses deliberate pacing, experimentalist flourishes and an adventurous score with music by the composer known as Foie Gras to build a sinister story about redemption and forgiveness.

Nichols plays Paul, a 20-something who gets the cold shoulder in his hometown after he returns from prison. He senses a presence in his house, and we see it: a shadowy figure that watches Paul from doorways as he tries to get acclimated to his old life. The radio warns that a killer may be on the loose, but it’s unclear if that’s Paul’s threat.

About halfway through, Smith’s film does a not-quite successful switcheroo that takes the story, which Smith wrote with Dashiell Arkenstone, to a predictable place that further

confuses the weirdness that came before. But then Smith takes a third turn, driving the story into experimentalist territory that set my eyeballs ablaze. (Stream it on Screambox.)

‘Nesting’

Pénélope (Rose-Marie Perreault) takes her crying baby to the corner store late one night when she’s caught up in a violent robbery at the hands of a woman she recognizes. Struggling with postpartum depression and haunted by the memory of the crime, Pénélope has a hard time sleeping and dealing with the baby’s pothead father, Gaspard (Simon Landry-Désy). A fling with a former lover (Saladin Dellers) brings fleeting relief until Pénélope mysteriously receives photos of their trysts taken by a possibly supernatural god knows who.

That’s the foundation of this creepy psychological thriller from French Canadian writer-director Chloé Cinq-Mars. The film recalls “Birth/Rebirth” and other recent horror movies about madness and new motherhood, but it does so with a nightmarish visual style — fantastic work from cinematographer Lena Mill-Reuillard — that sets it apart. Despite a gruesome finale, evil here mostly comes from inner traumas, not outside forces. Fans of emotionally-driven, slow-burn terror will be in for a dark treat. (Rent or buy it on major platforms.)

‘Send Help’

I was less taken by Sam Raimi’s horror comedy than other horror fans were. I find it to be an unwieldy combination of survival-revenge thriller and gory meet-cute rom-com with little of the radicalness that made Raimi’s 1981 shocker “The Evil Dead ” one of horror’s darkest and best comedies. Still, it’s worth watching for two leads who have chemistry to spare: Rachel McAdams as Linda Liddle, a mousy corporate workhorse, and Dylan O’Brien as Bradley, her new beefcake boss she ends up sharing an island with after they survive a plane crash. Raimi and his screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift wring decent comedy out of the pair’s romantic mismatch; Linda’s got mad “Survivor” skills, Bradley withers in the absence of bro comforts.

The film’s many shocks of gruesome violence are tonally awkward, landing the film somewhere between “Swept Away” (Guy Ritchie’s, not Lina Wertmüller’s) and a more grisly “Cast Away.” That’s why I recommend this one for fans of “Spider-Man”-era Raimi who have extra strong stomachs and for horror fans who go weak for the Hallmark Channel. (Stream it on Hulu.)

Alphabet, Intel results in focus for AI trade as US earnings rev up

U.S. corporate earnings season gathers steam in the coming week as Alphabet (GOOGL.O), and Intel (INTC.O), are set to offer updates that could sway the market-leading AI trade amid high profit expectations and uncertainty over the Iran war.

The S&P 500 (.SPX), skidded on Friday to post a weekly decline, dragged down by a steep pullback in high-flying semiconductor shares. Still, the benchmark S&P 500 remained up about 9% in 2026, and stood 2% below its early June record high.

Increasing expectations for profit strength this year have provided bedrock support for investors’ enthusiasm for stocks.

Now they are counting on the second-quarter earnings season, just under way, to show the corporate profit engine is still humming along, with S&P 500 earnings projected up a whopping 26% in the period, according to LSEG IBES data.

“Headlines continue to raise anxiety and leave investors scratching their heads wondering why the market continues to reach new heights,” said Michael Arone, chief investment strategist at State Street Investment Management. “And the reason it does is because the fundamentals have been resilient, and the earnings continue to be outstanding.”

Alphabet in focus for AI spending view Alphabet’s quarterly report on Wednesday will command Wall Street’s attention. The Google parent, the thirdlargest U.S. company by market value at $4.2 trillion, can jostle indexes as one of the heavyweight “Magnificent Seven” stocks that have driven U.S. equities higher for much of the bull run that has lasted nearly four years.

The company is also an AI “hyperscaler,” spending billions of dollars to build out data centers and AI infrastructure. Such AI capital spending has been at the heart of this year’s market rally, driving huge gains for semiconductors and other companies benefiting from the massive outlays.

If Alphabet announces “any type of pullbacks with respect to the spending that they’re forecasting around AI, you could see ripple effects across the entire AI ecosystem,” said Kevin Mahn, president and chief investment officer at Hennion & Walsh Asset Management.

Results from semiconductor firms Intel and Texas Instruments (TXN.O), take on particular significance due to the stunning rally this year in chip stocks. The trade faltered in recent weeks, with the Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index (.SOX), ending on Friday down over 20% from its late-June record high, confirming it has been in a bear market.

Still, the index remains up more than 60% in 2026; Intel shares have soared over 160%, while Texas Instruments has gained 60%.

Tepid market reactions to strong reports this period from foreign companies Samsung Electronics (005930.

MOST ASSERTIVE STOCKS

KS), and Taiwan Semiconductor (2330.TW), indicate the high expectations for the semiconductor industry.

Chip stocks have swung widely as investors questioned whether the torrid trade has run too far. The sector’s massive collective weighting in indexes means chip shares can influence the market’s direction. Leveraged products tied to the semiconductor space are also “amplifying on both the upside and the downside,” said State Street’s Arone.

Q2 reports start to flood in as fed nears Elon Musk’s Tesla (TSLA.O), another Magnificent Seven company, is also set to post results in the coming week. Other high-profile results include American Express (AXP.N), Philip Morris International (PM.N), and defense contractor RTX (RTX.N), with more than 80 S&P 500 companies expected to report.

Major U.S. banks kicked off the reporting season last week, posting earnings boosted by fees for advising on mergers and acquisitions and surging trading revenue.

Wall Street was still bracing for developments in the Middle East to cause day-to-day market swings, following a recent escalation of the nearly five-month-old U.S.Israeli war with Iran. Many investors expect the war to be relatively short-lived, but are wary that renewed tensions could boost energy prices up to levels they reached following the start of the war, inflaming inflation fears.

That is especially an issue ahead of the Federal Reserve’s meeting at the end of July. Pricing in fed funds futures indicates expectations the U.S. central bank will raise interest rates in the coming months to bring down inflation that is above the Fed’s 2% annual target.

Cooler-than-expected data last week on U.S. consumer and producer prices calmed some fears the Fed could raise rates at this month’s meeting.

“The macro data has painted a picture of a steady economy with some improvement in inflationary pressure,” said Eric Kuby, chief investment officer at North Star Investment Management.

Another US service member is killed as 2 sides edge toward wider war

The U.S. military announced Sunday that another service member had been killed in action, bringing the number of American military personnel who have died in the conflict with Iran to 17, as the two sides edged closer to a wider war.

The service member was killed in northern Iraq on Saturday “during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone,” U.S. Central Command said in a statement. The death came a day after Central Command said two U.S. soldiers had been killed during an Iranian missile barrage in Jordan.

That attack, on Friday, left another soldier missing. In the statement Sunday, Central Command said that “unidentified remains” had been found at that location. Those remains were believed to be the missing soldier’s, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

The deaths came during a week of spiraling attacks by both sides that hit sensitive infrastructure sites like bridges and water facilities, and that largely demolished what remained of the deal to end the war that President Donald Trump agreed to with Iran last month. The State Department cautioned Americans traveling abroad that tensions in the Middle East had created the “potential for unforeseen escalation.”

U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday said the United States was sending more warplanes to the Middle East, a

move that was in the works even before the soldiers’ deaths.

The U.S. military said early Sunday that it had attacked Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defense facilities, as well as the Revolutionary Guard forces responsible for striking U.S. forces in Jordan.

Iran retaliated with strikes on Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan, Middle East countries where the United States maintains a significant military presence. In recent days, Iranian attacks have increasingly damaged critical infrastructure, including an oil facility and power and water treatment plants in Kuwait, according to authorities.

Jordan evacuated the international airport and seaport

in the coastal city of Aqaba after a “specific and credible threat,” according to the U.S. Embassy there. The country’s air defenses later shot down three Iranian missiles that targeted the country, the Jordanian military said, while a fourth landed in an unpopulated area.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the loss of the U.S. soldiers “only stiffens our resolve.” But the attacks seemed likely to deepen Trump’s dilemma over how to move ahead with the war against Iran he began alongside Israel more than four months ago.

Here’s what else to know:

— Supreme leader’s message: Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, argued the United States had violated the ceasefire deal made in June and called Trump’s signature on it “worthless and invalid,” in a message carried by state media Saturday.

— Aircraft deployment: U.S. officials who were not authorized to publicly discuss operational matters said Sunday that Air Force F-16 fighter jets from Germany and stealthy F-35 jets from Britain were being sent to the Middle East. Additional aerial refueling aircraft were also on the way, according to the officials.

— Jordan in focus: The Iranian attacks on Jordan which killed the two U.S. personnel were the fourth in five days in the country, underlining the Arab nation’s growing strategic importance as a host for U.S. forces in the region.

— Isolation in Iran: At least 50 people in Iran have been killed since the escalation began earlier this month, according to the Iranian Health Ministry. Residents say they live in fear of the attacks.

Earthquake in Peru kills 6 and displaces hundreds

Six people were killed and at least 20 were injured by an earthquake that hit the central highland region of Peru, authorities said Sunday.

The quake struck in the Junín region, near the rural district of Chongos Bajos, at 9:24 p.m. Saturday, damaging or destroying dozens of houses and forcing about 300 people to take refuge in a sports stadium because of aftershocks, according to Peru’s National Institute of Civil Defense.

The quake also damaged the town’s 16th-century church and chapel, according to a local broadcaster, RPP. It was a relatively shallow quake, with a reported depth of just 6.2 miles, according to the United States Geological Survey, which reported its magnitude as 5.5. (Peru’s

National Geophysical Institute reported a magnitude of 5.1 and a depth of about 15 miles.)

The quake was the biggest to hit Peru’s central highlands since 1969, when temblors of 5.9 and 6 magnitude shook the region, Hernando Tavera, head of Peru’s Geophysical Institute, told a local TV channel, América Televisión.

So far this year, 450 earthquakes have been detected in Peru, about average for the quake-prone country, Tavera said.

Saturday’s quake cut off the electricity in towns near the epicenter, and several villages remained without access to power Sunday, the head of the National Institute of Civil Defense, Luis Vásquez, said on the TV program Exitosa Noticias.

Canada wildfires: What to know

July 18, 2026. Out-of-control wildfires in Ontario continued to force evacuations and affect major cities in Canada and the United States on Saturday as the province’s leader made his first visit near the devastated area. (Cole Burston/The New York Times)

Wildfires in Canada have cast smoke across a swath of the country and the United States, polluting the air for millions of people, forcing hundreds to evacuate in some places and smudging skies into a brick-red haze.

Canadian firefighters have sought to bring the wildfires under control, but days of dark skies and unhealthy air have raised tensions with the United States. A group of Republican lawmakers criticized Canada’s handling of the fires, and then President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Canada to pay for harm caused by the smoke.

Prime Minister Mark Carney did not directly address the

complaints by Republican lawmakers, but suggested the United States should do more to combat climate change, which scientists say is a significant factor in bigger, longer and fiercer wildfires.

Q: What is the status of the fires?

A: As of Saturday, nearly 200 wildfires were burning in Ontario, including more than 70 raging out of control. Roughly 1.7 million acres have burned in Ontario, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center.

Ten communities have been evacuated, and 300 people rescued from campsites, Premier Doug Ford of Ontario said in a brief address on Saturday.

The fires have darkened skies from Toronto to over Detroit and the East Coast of the United States, leaving New York, Toronto and Washington with the worst air quality in the world on Saturday morning.

Q: What is Canada doing?

A: Ford said that there were 155 fire crews at work, with 80 water bombers and helicopters flying, and 40 additional aircraft ready to deploy.

He also urged people not to return to campsites or homes, especially because water bombers hold back from dropping fire suppression loads when people are spotted in the bush from overhead. There was little sign on Saturday that the fires would soon wane.

Thunder Bay, Ontario, is quickly becoming overcrowded with people fleeing their homes. Some evacuees have been sent to Toronto and other locations. Indigenous communities have been among the worst affected by the fires.

Officials, including Eleanor Olszewski, Canada’s minister of emergency management, have defended Canada’s forestry practices. “Warmer, drier weather is becoming more common,

US strikes leave Iranians isolated and scared

U.S. airstrikes targeting parts of southern Iran rattled Iranians’ nerves last week, they said in interviews, and destroyed key links between one province and the rest of the country.

Marzieh, a resident of the port city of Bandar Abbas, said that she had heard from friends that the roads around the city had been “devastated.” Marzieh and other Iranians interviewed gave only their first names for fear of government reprisal.

Overnight strikes damaged a tunnel and three bridges, the Hormozgan governor’s office said Saturday, according to Iran’s state news agency. The government urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel on the roads until further notice. Hormozgan province, which includes Bandar Abbas, lies along the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media reported overnight that at least six areas had been targeted around the country, including Bandar Abbas, but also Ahvaz, the capital of the oil-rich Khuzestan province about 500 miles northwest of the strait, as well as Lar and Darab, two inland cities in Iran’s southern Fars province.

A water desalination plant in the southern province of Jask was also struck, according to Iranian state television. The U.S. military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on those claims.

By Saturday afternoon, some previously damaged traffic routes hit during the last several days of attacks appeared to have been at least partially restored, with Iranian state media reporting that passenger train traffic had resumed from the Bandar Abbas railway station and the opening of an alternative route to the east of the city.

The U.S. military said its overnight strikes had targeted “surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage and maritime capabilities.” It made no mention of civilian infrastructure, though President Donald Trump has frequently threatened to bombard such sites, including power plants and bridges.

Nightly attacks in Ahvaz have become a familiar pattern, according to Emad, a 34-year-old trader there. “That said,” he added, “some people are still frightened by the explosions, especially those living closer to the targeted areas.”

Emad said that as far as he could tell, the strikes had tar-

increasing wildfire risk in Canada and around the world,” Olszewski said in a statement Friday evening. “Northern Ontario and Quebec, for example, received less than 40% of normal precipitation this June, with temperatures above historical averages.”

Q: Why is it so hard to control fires in Canada?

A: Most wildfires in Canada spread across such vast, remote areas that they cannot be fought effectively and are often left to burn, experts say.

Half of Canada’s wildfires, like the blazes in northern Ontario, burn in sparsely populated areas, said Michael Flannigan, an expert on fire management at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia. They are most often accessible only by plane.

Not only is it impossible to quickly deploy firefighters to such remote areas, but there is rarely much time to react. Ignited mostly by lightning, wildfires often spread in a highly combustible boreal forest before firefighters can respond within the first critical 30 minutes.

In the long run, wildfires are considered beneficial because they remove the most flammable material in forests, promoting regeneration. Extinguishing every fire increases risk, as Canadian officials have learned in managing national parks.

Q: What is happening with the smoke?

A: The plume of smoke far above the Earth’s surface remained on Saturday, but where and when it would send pollution to the ground was expected to shift considerably by the hour. Amid the elusive forecast, air quality warnings and alerts remained in place across many of the affected states and provinces.

Summer weather, like thunderstorms, can help clear smoke, but the smoke itself complicates the forecast. It can block sunlight, keeping temperatures lower at the surface and preventing storms from rising and intensifying.

Scientists estimate that wildfire smoke is linked to tens of thousands of deaths a year, and that human-caused climate change is responsible for a growing share of them.

geted the city’s southeastern periphery, where there are military bases and installations, rather than its center.

Elnaz, a 30-year-old resident of Ahvaz, said Thursday night had been the worst night since the fighting resumed. Her friends’ and family’s young children “were especially frightened,” she said. “The blast waves were so close that we thought if we stepped outside, we would find the entire city destroyed.”

Since then, the attacks have not been as severe, Elnaz said, but each night is unpredictable.

“None of us knows what kind of attack will happen once night falls,” she said. “We generally know that the strikes are aimed at military areas, but even bombing those locations is enough for the noise and shock waves to reach us and make our whole bodies shake.”

As is typical in Ahvaz during the summer even in peacetime, there are power outages every day, sometimes lasting more than two hours, she said. During power outages, water is also cut off. Temperatures in the city reached as high as 120 degrees Fahrenheit last week.

While stores in the city are still stocked, Elnaz said, they are largely empty of customers, because people have little money. Iran’s economy, long in malaise, has gotten even worse during the war, with skyrocketing food prices and companies forced to lay off workers.

Retailers remove more Taylor Farms lettuce after recall in 27 states

Grocers and retailers rushed to pull products containing iceberg lettuce off shelves on Saturday, as Taylor Farms issued a recall, notifying customers that lettuce shipped to 27 states may have been contaminated.

The largest produce company in the country is under scrutiny after federal officials linked the company’s Mexico plant to an outbreak of illness from cyclospora, a parasite that can cause severe illness, including vomiting, cramping and explosive diarrhea.

The investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention initially tied the parasite to lettuce that Taylor Farms shipped to Taco Bell in five states earlier last week. However, the recall notice by Taylor Farms late Friday suggested far broader distribution of potentially contaminated greens.

The recall may not end the current problems for Taylor Farms.

Late Saturday, the Food and Drug Administration said a sample of iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico tested positive for cyclospora during “targeted import surveillance.” The agency said that Taylor Farms had confirmed that the positive product was not part of the current recall, and that the company was trying to identify whether the new implicated lot had made it to restaurants or consumers’ homes.

Taylor Farms did not respond to an email seeking comment Saturday, but on Friday said it had “suspended distribution of iceberg lettuce from Central Mexico.”

The recalled products were shipped starting June 29 through as recently as Thursday and have expiration dates through Aug. 3. Taylor Farms said on social media that none of its own Taylor Farms-branded salad kits were associated with the outbreak.

Instead, much of the product being recalled was sold in larger bags to food service operations like restaurants. Many of the bags were blended with romaine.

States listed as part of the recall include Florida, Illinois, Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, North Carolina and Missouri. The recall notice does not list California or New York, but it is unclear if Taylor Farms supplied lettuce to companies in states af-

fected by the recall and then those companies distributed the lettuce widely.

The size and scale of the outbreak — possibly affecting more than 5,000 individuals in at least 34 states — resulted in widespread panic among consumers this past week. The uncertainty was fueled, in part, by government investigators racing to pinpoint the source.

But consumer confusion around where their lettuce comes from is also a consequence of a nontransparent food system. Taylor Farms — like other food producers — does not disclose which grocery stores or restaurants it distributes leafy greens or other vegetables to.

Even the company’s recall notice was vague. Rather than provide the names of the distributors or stores that had received the lettuce being recalled, Taylor Farms used codes.

Still, by midday Saturday, a number of companies that had been contacted said they were pulling the affected product from their supply chains or stores.

The retail giant Walmart said it had removed some lettuce under its Marketside brand, even though there was no indication the products were affected.

“Out of an abundance of caution, customers who purchased these products should not consume them and should

discard them or return them to their local Walmart store for a full refund,” the company said.

(The FDA did flag Walmart’s Marketside products in its update late Saturday afternoon.)

Sysco, the nation’s largest food distributor, said it had withdrawn all iceberg lettuce products from Mexico at the request of Taylor Farms.

“We will continue to actively monitor the situation and work with regulators as needed,” Sysco said, adding that it stopped selling and distributing those Taylor Farms products on Thursday.

US Foods, another large food distributor, said it had also notified affected customers about the recall on Friday, a spokesperson said in an email.

Jack in the Box restaurants learned about the potential issue with its lettuce on Thursday and immediately told restaurants that had received the affected shredded iceberg lettuce to dispose of it. The affected restaurants were in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, the company said. “At this time, there have been no known illnesses associated with food served at Jack in the Box in connection with the F.D.A.’s ongoing investigation,” the company said.

Taco Bell, which moved quickly this week to pull lettuce from restaurants in

some states, said in a statement Saturday afternoon that it had adjusted its supply chain and “within 72 hours had voluntarily removed all affected Taylor Farms lettuce” from every Taco Bell restaurant in the country.

“Clearly, this is a nationwide industrywide issue, not a Taco Bell-specific issue,” the statement read. “We hope that other members of the industry are taking the same degree of immediate action and accountability for the consumer as we have.”

In fact, it is likely other distributors and restaurants have been affected by the recall and may not come forward.

Although information came out later Saturday, in the morning the FDA said on its website that Taylor Farms “has not publicly provided distribution information or a list of customers who received the product that was voluntarily removed from the market.” FDA regulations do not require the company to do so, a source of frustration for food safety leaders.

While there may be thousands of cases, the CDC has officially confirmed that at least 1,645 people have fallen ill and 141 have been hospitalized, most of them after consuming the lettuce sent to Taco Bell. The CDC made that determination through scientific detective work, starting with case reports about people who fell ill and tracking back to a common food source. The case count is likely to rise, as the CDC factors in the scope of the recall.

The United States is on track to have more cyclospora cases in 2026 than in any previous year. The agency said it was investigating more than 5,100 additional illnesses that may have been caused by the parasite, which is transmitted through food or water contaminated with feces.

HÉCTOR L. The Pescadores del Plata of Comerío and the Azucareros of Yabucoa were winners on Saturday, moving closer to the Puerto Rico Superior Double-A Baseball League championship series.

Both teams won on the road to take a 3-1 lead in their respective semifinal series, pushing the defending champion Mulos of Juncos and the Gigantes of Carolina to the brink of elimination.

Comerío ace left-hander Luis Leroy Cruz pitched seven solid innings, allowing just two hits, to lead the Pescadores del Plata to a 9-0 victory over the Mulos at Mariano “Niní” Meaux Stadium in Juncos.

Cruz struck out seven batters to earn the win. He was relieved by Maykol García and Víctor Vargas, who completed the shutout.

The loss went to Mulos lefty Luis Cintrón, who gave up

José “Pocholo” Rivera kickstarted the Comerío offense in the second inning with a two-run home run, while Luis Fernando Colón delivered another standout offensive performance, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Across their three victories in the series, the Pescadores del Plata have scored 34 runs against Juncos pitchers.

In the other semifinal series, the Azucareros defeated the Gigantes 4-3 in 10 innings at Roberto Clemente Walker Stadium in Carolina.

The winning run came with the game tied 3-3 in the top of the 10th, when Alexis Rodríguez Sepúlveda hit a ground ball toward first base and reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Kevin Santa to score from third base.

Santa scored three runs and had two hits for Yabucoa.

Reliever Alberto Rosario was credited with the win after recording one out, while Joan Román earned the save. The loss went to Luis Ayala, who allowed one run in two innings.

Sabana Grande ties women’s softball title series with Juncos

The Prodigiosas of Sabana Grande defeated the Valencianas of Juncos 3-0 on Saturday night at Quintín Hernández Park in Sabana Grande.

The Prodigiosas tied the series at one win apiece with the home field victory. Sabana Grande took control in the first inning when Colby McClinton hit a double to center field to drive in Olivia Elliot for the game’s first run -- a lead that proved sufficient thanks to the outstanding performance of the pitching staff.

The home team extended the lead in the sixth inning. Madison Velázquez hit a home run over the centerfield fence to make the score 2-0, and later in the inning, Eva Torres singled in Julianna Nieves for the third and final run.

Prodigiosas starter Morgan Smith struck out 10 and allowed just two hits to earn the seven-inning victory while issuing two walks.

The loss went to Juncos starter Mariah López, who pitched six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, striking out nine batters while walking two.

Velázquez led the Prodigiosas’ offense, going 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. McClinton finished 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Torres went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and both Elliot and Nieves scored a run.
