enator Ada Álvarez Conde introduced a measure to create a new, more rigorous fireworks law called the “PROTECTE” Fireworks Law: Regulation, Order, Tranquility, Environment, Guarantee and Empathy of Puerto Rico, with the aim of responsibly addressing the use, possession and sale of fireworks on the Island, prioritizing public safety, the tranquility of communities and the protection of vulnerable populations. The proposal arises from the increase in incidents, accidents, property damage, harm to people with disabilities, the elderly, children, veterans, as well as domestic and wild animals, in addition to the negative impact on the environment. Key components of the measure include: a significant increase in fines and penalties for those who violate fireworks regulations, seeking a real deterrent effect; a clear distinction between possession and sale, establishing different responsibilities and consequences depending on the behavior; the creation of protected zones, especially around sensitive residential areas, institutions, hospitals, shelters, communities with people with autism, and spaces where fireworks cause a disproportionate impact; and the allocation of money collected from fines to strengthen the retirement funds of the Puerto Rico Police and Fire Department, recognizing their work and sacrifice in emergency situations. Additionally, as a supplementary measure, I would amend the current Explosives Act to explicitly include pyrotechnics within its regulatory framework, closing legal loopholes and facilitating its oversight and would include. He is working on the penalties in the Penal Code and is considering, with the PRITS office, a campaign to promote the use of drone shows, which are being used around the world as alternative measures.
Public safety, community tranquility, and the protection of vulnerable populations are among the reasons for introducing measures to regulate the sale and use of fireworks. “Fireworks can no longer be a matter of disorder and risk. This law seeks a balance: respect for the celebration, but with empathy, safety, and order. On the one hand, we have a broader consensus against fireworks, and at the same time, we see how there is a disproportionate use of them when they are illegal. There are people without empathy using firecrackers and sticks of dynamite , and we have to go after those insensitive individuals who defy the law thinking it’s training. That’s why PROTEGE must bring protection to our communities, our animals, the environment, and also support the public servants who protect us,” said Senator Álvarez Conde. The Senator joins the call from various groups during these holidays to avoid fireworks, as well as a call against celebratory gunfire. The legislation was worked on during the legislative recess, so it would be evaluated in the third session.
Oversight Board urges Senate to address rum tax and trust fund in FY2027 budget talks By THE STAR STAFF

he Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico has responded to Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz’s recent inquiries about the use of federal rum excise tax revenues and the Puerto Rico Trust Fund to pay the pensions of Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority retirees, signaling that any changes to these funding streams should be considered during the upcoming Fiscal Year 2027 budget process. In a letter dated December 26, 2025, the Board acknowledged the importance of both the rum cover-over program and the Trust Fund to the island’s fiscal framework and long-term sustainability.
However, it emphasized that current laws and regulations restrict how these revenues can be spent. The Board proposed that any new obligations or modifications to existing ones be discussed as part of broader efforts to reform Puerto Rico’s budgetary and financial statutory framework. “By discussing these initiatives within the formal budget development process, we can ensure that any decisions consider Puerto Rico’s overall financial situation and are fully aligned with long-term fiscal objectives,” the letter stated. The Oversight Board expressed appreciation for Rivera Schatz’s engagement and invited continued collaboration to achieve a more transparent and sustainable fiscal system for Puerto Rico.

Hostosianos support McClintock’s bill which has little support locally By THE STAR STAFF

he Hostosiano National Independence Movement (MINH) has endorsed U.S. Congressman Tom McClintock’s proposal to introduce legislation for a referendum on Puerto Rico’s self-determination and independence. However, the measure—driven largely by Puerto Rican diaspora organizations in the United States—has gained little traction among political sectors on the island. The bill calls for a status vote that would exclude the option of full annexation under Washington’s colonial rule, in place since 1898—a scenario strongly opposed by former President Donald Trump. “Inspired by the political and ethical thought of Eugenio María de Hostos, we reaffirm that independence is not an isolated
act or a concession, but a democratic, inclusive, and participatory process that must recognize the will of all Puerto Ricans, both those residing in Puerto Rico and those who are part of our broad and diverse diaspora,” MINH stated. Represented in the initiative by Jaime Inclán, a member of its National Directorate, the organization stressed that “the Hostosian principle of human dignity and the sovereignty of the people demands that any proposal regarding Puerto Rico’s political future recognize the Puerto Rican nation in its entirety.” “The diaspora is an integral part of our country, its history, and its future,” added MINH in written statements sent to Prensa Latina in San Juan, signed by co-presidents Carlos Vega Pérez and Ángel Rodríguez León. PIP criticizes approval of Esencia project By THE STAR STAFF
T
he Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) legislative delegation has strongly condemned the decision by the Office of Permit Management (OGPe) to issue an Environmental Compliance Determination for the controversial “Esencia de Cabo Rojo” development project. Senator Adrián González and PIP Secretary General Juan Dalmau joined representatives Denis Márquez, Adriana Gutiérrez, and Nellie Lebrón Robles in denouncing the move. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which spans 501 pages, is available under the “Information Sources and Environmental Documents” tab on OGPe’s official website. According to the OGPe document, “It is determined that the environmental document submitted meets the requirements to prepare an adequate environmental document under the RPEA in the form of: Environmental Impact Statement.” The agency also announced it will act as the proponent for the initiative. The development includes four public vehicular beach access points with sanitary facilities, support for recreational activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and mountain biking, and two “Towncenters” offering space for businesses and services, including gastronomic, recreational, cultural, religious, and other essential community services. OGPe asserts that the project will occupy less than 25 percent of the total land area—15 percent for building footprints and 10 percent for access roads and infrastructure. The remaining 75 percent is designated as green space, including landscaped areas, two golf courses, and conservation zones. The determination comes despite strong opposition from Cabo Rojo communities, environmental organizations, and prominent scientists. Several government agencies also
rejected the proposal, citing inadequate infrastructure to supply electricity, potable water, and wastewater treatment for the massive development. However, the Municipality of Cabo Rojo endorsed the project. In the EIS, the municipality acknowledged that some components conflict with the Land Use Plan but recommended measures such as implementing best engineering practices, rehabilitating sensitive areas impacted by past illegal activities, creating continuous ecological corridors, applying ecotourism design guidelines from the Tourism Company, and reserving 25-meter conservation strips along natural stormwater drainage channels. The municipality also welcomed a reduction in the building footprint from 25 percent to 21 percent and requested that permanent structures maintain a minimum 50-meter distance from maritime-terrestrial zones, natural reserves, caves, and wetlands. Vehicular access roads must have a minimum width of 13 meters. Additionally, residential units must include restrictive clauses to prevent short-term rentals by owners, except through a complex or hotel administrator. OGPe announced its determination this week via a newspaper notice. The document does not detail how the decision was reached but identifies Jaime Green Morales, Director of the Environmental Compliance Evaluation Division, as the responsible official. The project proponent is Cabo Rojo Land Acquisition. Plans include 530 hotel units, 1,132 tourist residences, commercial areas, golf courses, a school with 500 dormitories, medical services, and other infrastructure. The development spans 96 cadastral parcels totaling 6,088,514 square meters (1,504 acres / 1,549 “cuerdas”) and carries an estimated cost of $2.684 billion. It is projected to create 17,000 jobs during construction (direct, indirect, and induced) and 3,000 jobs during operation. “This is yet another example of investors exploiting

PIP legislators also criticized the timing of OGPe’s determination, arguing it was deliberately issued during the holiday season to shorten the practical 30-day period for scientific and community groups to respond. “The chosen date reduces the number of working days available for opponents to review and prepare arguments, given government office closures during holidays. This was done with premeditation and bad faith to favor Esencia,” stated Márquez, Gutiérrez, and Lebrón Robles.

everal MQ-9 Reaper drones have been spotted at Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, signaling an escalation in U.S. surveillance operations across the Caribbean as Washington intensifies pressure on Venezuela. Footage taken on December 26 shows multiple drones parked and taxiing on the runway, with American personnel working around the aircraft, several US media outlets have reported. The deployment is part of a broader military buildup that includes an aircraft carrier, fighter jets, and additional warships in the region. In recent days, Osprey tiltrotor aircraft and MC-130J Commando II planes have also arrived in Aguadilla, according to U.S. officials. This surge in activity follows President Donald Trump’s recent directive to impose what he called a “blockade” on sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela—a move aimed at tightening economic and

San Juan begins Natatorium renovation as part of Central Park Phase 3 By THE STAR STAFF

an Juan Mayor Miguel A. Romero Lugo announced the start of the remodeling and renovation of the San Juan Natatorium, a project that is part of Phase 3 of the rehabilitation of Dr. Hernán Padilla Central Park. The initiative represents an estimated investment of $11,670,965 and aims to modernize and strengthen one of the city’s most important sports and recreational facilities. “The largest percentage of this investment comes from the Municipality of San Juan, which reflects our direct commitment to rehabilitating essential public facilities. We are allocating municipal funds responsibly to ensure safe, functional, and modern spaces that will serve our people for many years,” said Romero Lugo. Of the total investment, 74% comes from San Juan’s general municipal funds, amounting to $8,651,505.64. The remaining portion is supported by federal funds, including $2,717,513.42 from FEMA and $301,945.94 from CDBG-DR. This phase continues earlier rehabilitation efforts at Central Park and is part of a comprehensive strategy to modernize the park’s sports and recreational infrastructure. Construction is expected to last approximately 12 months and will be carried out in phases,
beginning with interior work and later addressing roof-related improvements. During the construction period, the Natatorium’s administrative offices will remain operational. However, all pool-related services will be suspended while the improvements are underway, as a safety measure for staff and the public. The scope of work includes major upgrades to the pool and bleacher areas, such as the replacement of the metal roof, lighting fixtures, laminated glass, handrails, drainage channels, non-slip finishes, and structural anchors, as well as the replacement of ceiling gypsum board. In the mechanical room, work will include new acoustic materials, lighting, and mechanical pumps. Additional improvements will be made to the main lobby, where floors will be prepared and finished with epoxy paint. The gymnasium will receive new ceiling acoustics, air conditioning units, gypsum board, and carpeting. Hallways will see the replacement of rolling doors, lighting fixtures, and flashing elements. On the second level, upgrades will include corridor and restroom improvements, such as new fire hose cabinets, decorative wall panels, lighting, ceiling acoustics, and epoxy floor finishes. Concession areas will also receive new ceiling acoustics as part of the
modernization process. Exterior work will include the demolition and reconstruction of ramps, plastering improvements, replacement of fencing, spotlight-style lighting, exterior surface preparation and painting, new plycem roof covers and fascias, galvanized steel gates, water piping, crack repairs, concrete sidewalks, signage, and the replacement of chillers and water heaters. “We understand that the temporary closure of the pool represents an adjustment for our
users, but these improvements are necessary to ensure first-class facilities. We are working in a planned and responsible manner to return to the city a renovated, safe Natatorium ready to serve for many more years,” Romero Lugo added. The project team includes CJ Quiñones Engineering, PSC as designer; Integra Design Group, PSC overseeing inspections; JM Caribbean Builders, Corp. as contractor; and Slocum Ventures, LLC as project manager.

New college of Florida was progressive. Then Gov. DeSantis overhauled it. By ANEMONA HARTOCOLLIS
A
pril Flakne strides into the classroom to teach a course on “The Odyssey,” a new requirement at New College of Florida. She has taught philosophy at the small state college for 25 years, but this class is different — seven weeks on one classic book, required of all students. Normally, her focus is on philosophers such as Hannah Arendt and Simone de Beauvoir, and their theories of totalitarianism, revolution and feminism. This class on Homer is a turnabout from all that, and marks a signature accomplishment for conservatives who want to redirect higher education. In early 2023, Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, executed what many viewed as a conservative takeover of New College, a struggling state school. With fewer than 1,000 students, the liberal arts college had long been a draw for nonconformists, where grades were verboten and students designed their own classes and majors. It was “a little Club Med” for people who were “all ideologically the same,” said Richard Corcoran, the school’s new president. Under a new board and president, and as required by a new state law, the school has installed a curriculum emphasizing the traditional Western canon, with “The Odyssey” serving as a foundational text. It has created new teams for sports including baseball, basketball and beach volleyball and recruited athletes to fill out their rosters. It has hired dozens of new professors, some with conservative backgrounds and a few who are known for their vocal opposition to liberal orthodoxies, such as Spencer Klavan, a lecturer at the college last year, and host of the Young Heretics podcast, about classical education. In September, it announced that a statue of Charlie Kirk, the assassinated conservative activist, would be placed on campus. And the college was among the first to say it would sign the Trump administration’s Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education, which links preferential access to federal funding to a willingness to adhere to federal policies and demands, and which better known schools have scorned. The school has also shed diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and gender studies. About 20 faculty members and 200 students decamped within the first six months of the makeover, according to the college. Today, the campus culture reflects the new influx of many conservative-leaning professors and students, who are sharing classes with the old guard who tend to be more liberal. The conservative tilt is unusual for colleges with a liberal arts curriculum. The changes are not about imposing one point of view on education, Corcoran said, but about creating a place that values debate. But as the college continues to move toward the ideological right, Flakne and other longtime colleagues are reserving judgment. While she has embraced her class on “The Odyssey,” she wondered whether in the future, there will be room for people like her at the college. She said that she can’t help but feel that

(Michael Adno/ The New York Times) her fate at New College may depend more than ever on politics, especially now that the Trump administration has applied the full force of the federal government against the higher education establishment. “I’d be happy to live out the rest of my career here,” Flakne, 59, said. “But people don’t know which ways the political winds may blow.” Required Reading New College was founded in 1960 as a private, progressive school along the same lines as Hampshire College, an experimental school in Massachusetts that has also struggled to stay afloat. The founders “wanted to free both students and faculty from the limits of lock-step curriculum and a focus on credit hours and a GPA,” according to a history on the college website. The campus straddles two sides of a highway, with stunning views of Sarasota Bay, a setting that might do Club Med proud. At the school’s dedication, the founders mixed dirt from Harvard University and New College, to symbolize their high aspirations. It joined the state university system in 1975, and eventually received a state designation as an independent honors college. Corcoran said that his detractors have painted an unrealistically rosy portrait of New College before the shake-up. Enrollment was flagging. The dormitories designed by I.M. Pei were covered in mold. The bayfront grounds and the campus’s Gatsbyesque mansions were shabby from years of neglect. His renewal plan consists, to a large degree, of things that any turnaround agent might have done, including recruiting student athletes and rehabbing buildings. But he has also poked at liberal sensibilities, for instance, by eliminating all-gender bathrooms for transgender students. And the college, along with other state universities, signed an agreement authorizing campus police to collaborate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to enforce federal immigration rules.
David Mikics, a newly hired English professor and writer for Tablet, the Jewish-oriented news and ideas magazine, says the ideological rift at New College has been exaggerated. “Some of my colleagues list their pronouns, others don’t,” he said. “It hasn’t been my experience that there’s a sort of war between one side and another side. I don’t even know what the sides would be to tell you the truth.” He said he is apolitical in the classroom. Asked to describe his politics, he said: “I’m kind of a centrist, with impulses in both directions.” Some of Flakne’s old colleagues grumble about “The Odyssey” and say that students would rather read a book that would be more relevant to their lives. Somewhat to her surprise, Flakne noted, no one has stopped her from continuing to teach about de Beauvoir, even with the elimination of gender studies. “I teach what I want to teach, because I feel able to justify it on intellectual grounds,” she said. “I will take the consequences if there were some.” The college is growing. There are more than 900 students this year, from fewer than 700 in 2022, according to the college. The acceptance rate of 73% is not particularly selective, but the college’s provost, David Rohrbacher, said students are self-selecting before they apply. The college wants to maintain a ratio of about one teacher for every eight students, a selling point. Tuition and fees are relatively low, at $6,916 in-state and $29,944 for out of state students, according to U.S. News and World Report. A walk across campus in late November finds students clustered into two groups, reflecting the campus, pre- and post-makeover. The artsier contingent of students is known on campus as Novos, Latin for the “New” in New College. The jocks are called Banyans, after the “Mighty Banyan” tree, the recently adopted school mascot. (The old mascot consisted of two brackets known as “the null set,” which captured the meta humor of the old guard.) Lately, students say, a new term has been circulating that conveys the school’s evolving identity: NARPs, for non-athletic regular person. Many Novo types, including Callie Flemming, a transgender fourth year student, had thought about leaving with the DeSantis overhaul. Hampshire College, a private school with a similar alternative vibe, had offered to take them in and match their lower tuition. About three dozen students accepted the offer that fall. Flemming is glad she did not. She still feels safe at New College, at least as safe as anywhere else in society, she said. “Most of the community that I like about New College, it’s still here,” she said. But she is a senior, and perhaps, among the last of the Novos. As the new incarnation takes hold, several veteran professors, who asked not to be identified because they wanted to protect their jobs, said the college’s quirky identity is on the way out. Another front in the Trump immigration crackdown: Import warehouses By ANA LEY
A
t a warehouse in Avenel, New Jersey, workers assigned to stock Versace dresses, Swarovski crystals and Louis Vuitton sneakers had settled into their shift one gray October morning when dozens of immigration agents swarmed the building and surrounded them. Masked officers carrying long rifles blocked exits and used dogs and heat detectors to find employees who were hiding. A helicopter circled. Within hours, agents arrested 46 people, which federal officials said represented nearly onefourth of the day’s workforce. The raid targeted a building with a little-known yet significant relationship with the federal government. Facilities like it are guarded by customs officials who let businesses store products until import taxes are paid. In exchange, officials enter at will to inspect merchandise. On that day, they came for the workers. The facilities are known as bonded warehouses and are abundant in North Jersey because of its proximity to a major international port. Federal agents raided at least three of them during a span of four months this year, alarming worker rights activists who believe that President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown has ensnared the region’s import-export industry. Employees swept up in the raid said they felt ambushed by the customs officers with whom they worked in the building, which is used by an Italian company called Savino Del Bene that moves fashion and luxury goods. Some of the people arrested said that they had work permits and open paths to legal status. Federal officials said work permits and pending asylum applications do not grant people legal status, although migrants with those designations have not historically been a priority for deportation. Several of the workers arrested in the raids have since been released from detention, in some cases after spending weeks behind bars. Jhonatan Bello, 18, had worked at the warehouse for two months when he was arrested. He was released in December, after enduring what he described as inhumane conditions inside

Bello, who emigrated from Colombia four years ago, had a work permit and a Social Security number and said that he had applied for legal status through his mother’s husband, who is a U.S. citizen. “No human being deserves this,” Bello said in Spanish. “We endured so much hunger and cold.” The Department of Homeland Security said law enforcement agents were carrying out an inspection when they arrested the workers. It was not immediately clear if Savino Del Bene would face penalties for employing people in the country illegally. Advocates for immigrants have said that warehouse workers are often hired by staffing agencies, making it hard to track their employment history. Attempts to reach representatives for Savino Del Bene were unsuccessful. DHS officials said in a statement that Customs and Border Protection validates employee lists provided by bonded warehouses, and that failure to comply with the agency’s rules would “trigger immediate corrective action requirements and may result in suspension or removal from the program, loss of warehouse designation and referral to the authorities.” Advocates for worker rights have questioned the legality of the government’s arrest tactic.
“ICE typically needs a warrant signed by a judge — a judicial warrant — to enter places and to try to detain folks, but they’re finding this loophole,” said Amanda Dominguez, a community organizer at New Labor, an advocacy group that represents low-wage immigrant workers. “I would argue that they still need their own judicial warrant.” Asked whether the federal agents had a judicial warrant to arrest migrants, DHS officials said they did not need one. “DHS enforces the laws of the nation every day and regularly inspects bonded warehouses, since they operate under the supervision and control of CBP,” the officials wrote. “A bonded warehouse is within CBP search authority, and a search may be conducted at any time, without a warrant, to include both people and things.” Jeremy Jong, a staff attorney at Al Otro Lado, a nonprofit that provides legal services to migrants based in California, represented a migrant who sued after he was arrested at a bonded warehouse that was storing wine and liquor in Edison, New Jersey. Jong said the government had broken due process laws by arresting people without verifying that they were in the country illegally — in addition to exploiting its relationship with businesses that keep products in bonded warehouses. “Just because CBP has a right to be there does not mean that the Fourth Amendment doesn’t apply,” Jong said, referring to the constitutional protection against unreasonable searches and seizures. About 10 miles away from Avenel, in the town of Edison, two similar immigration raids during the summer unsettled the community, where Amazon, FedEx and UPS have a large presence, employing thousands. The first raid happened in July, when immigration authorities swarmed a wine and liquor warehouse, arresting 20 workers, mostly from South and Central America, who officials said lacked legal status. The second was in August, at a warehouse that receives goods from abroad, including China, and stores them for large online retailers. It resulted in the arrests of 29 workers, making the three operations some of the largest in the region since Trump took office. Customs and Border Protection agents were seen at every raid. In the aftermath, employees said warehouses have been left short-staffed and behind schedule as detained workers were sent to immigration jails and others stopped showing up. The raids have led immigrant activists to believe that the area around Avenel and Edison, which is about 30 miles southwest of the Manhattan borough of New York City, was being targeted because of its concentration of warehouses. The Trump vibe shift is dead By EZRA KLEIN

n January, I made a prediction: “I suspect we are at or near the peak of Trump vibes.” Now, as this long year grinds to its end, I think it can be said more declaratively: The Trump vibe shift is dead. And there are already glimmers of what will follow it. The Trump vibe shift was American culture and institutions moving toward President Donald Trump and Trumpism with a force unexplained by his narrow electoral victory. It was Mark Zuckerberg donning a chain and saying that the corporate world was too hostile to “masculine energy.” It was corporate executives using Trump as an excuse to wrest control of their companies back from their workers. It was the belief that Trump’s 2024 coalition — which stretched from Stephen Miller and Laura Loomer to Elon Musk and Marc Andreessen to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Joe Rogan and Tulsi Gabbard — was the arrival of something new rather than, as many thought in 2016, the final heave of something old. As 2025 closes, Trump’s polling sits in the low 40s, with some surveys showing him tumbling into the 30s. Democrats routed Republicans across the year’s elections, winning governorships in New Jersey and Virginia easily and overperforming in virtually every race they contested. Moderate Republicans broke with Speaker Mike Johnson to bring to the House floor a Democratic bill to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies. Marjorie Taylor Greene is retiring. Democrats have muscled their way to a four-point edge on the issue. Offense can be refreshing when injected into conformity. But cruelty as the dominant culture repulses most people. “The immigration thing — the way it looks is horrific,” Rogan said in October. “When you’re just arresting people in front of their kids — normal, regular people who’ve been here for 20 years — everybody who has a heart can’t get along with that.” Fuentes clips might carry a transgressive charge in MAGA group chats. But how many Americans will see themselves reflected in a political movement partly led by a celibate white supremacist who thinks Adolf Hitler is cool? In Trump’s first term, there was a constant yearning for a returnto-normalcy candidate. Many Democrats believed that Joe Biden or someone like him would defeat Trump in the polls and restore a more familiar form of political competition. That was enough to win the 2020 election, but not enough to turn the page on Trumpism. Instead, it roared back with even more force in 2024. Normalcy is not enough. The Democratic Party will need to represent something new, as opposed to retrenching to something old. A year ago, Democrats understood MSNBC and The Washington Post but seemed flummoxed by YouTube and TikTok. But younger and less terminally cautious Democrats — Zohran Mamdani in New York City, James Talarico in Texas, Gavin Newsom in California — are showing that Democrats can win the attention wars. What’s struck me about all of them is the way they embody a vibe different from anything Trumpism offers. The defining expression of Trump’s second term — the expression he chose for his official portrait — is a scowl. Mamdani’s smile is now its omnipresent opposite, potent enough to reduce Trump to a purring chumminess in the Oval Office. Talarico’s appeal is rooted in his Christianity; the response to him reflects, in part, the yearning for an explicitly moral and spiritual politics in the face of so much callousness and nihilism. Newsom has vaulted himself into 2028 front-runner status by following two seemingly contradictory impulses: He mocks Trump on social media even as he hosts genuine conversations with right-wing figures such as Steve Bannon, Michael Savage and Charlie Kirk. It’s resistance politics incongruously married to a searching pluralism, and it’s kept Newsom atop my social media feeds all year. Politics, of course, is more than just vibes. In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill ran on declaring a state of emergency to freeze utility rates. Mamdani ran on free child care and rent freezes. Talarico is taking aim at the rage economy of social media and the corruption of big-money politics. Newsom is embracing abundance and a fight-fire-with-fire approach to redistricting.

A year ago, we kept hearing that Trump was cool now. Is anyone saying that now? There is much to be said about where and how Trumpism ran aground. But a place to start is here: Trump’s electoral victory and his cultural momentum were in conflict. Trump won the 2024 election narrowly: 49.9% of the popular vote and an edge in the battleground states so slim that flipping 175,000 votes would have thrown the election to Kamala Harris. Poll after poll showed that the cost of living was what powered Trump’s victory. But Trump’s victory provided confidence and cover to chief executives and billionaires and celebrities and institutions whose frustrations and resentments had concentrated across the Biden years. If Trump could take back power, so could they. And they did: Companies gutted diversity, equity and inclusion bureaucracies they never actually wanted; comedians felt freed from the language police; the purity tests of the left gave way to the gleeful cruelty of the right. The force of the cultural correction gave MAGA a momentum that the election results never justified. That created the conditions for overreach. “There is little in the election results to suggest the public wants a sharp rightward lurch,” I wrote then. “But Trump and his team are jacked into the online vibes machine, and they want to meet the moment they sense. I doubt there would have been ideological modesty in any Trump administration, but I am particularly skeptical we will see it in this one.” Now Trumpism is failing both the voters and the vibes. It is failing the voters in the most obvious of ways: Trump ran for office promising lower prices. But he also ran on policies — tariffs and deportations — that raise prices by driving up the costs of goods and labor. Nor did Trump try to convince Americans that they should bear higher prices to subsidize domestic manufacturing or raise native-born wages or to isolate China. Instead, Trump lied to his voters. He promised that Americans would pay nothing and gain everything. Then came Liberation Day and the markets began shuddering and the price of coffee began rising and Trump has been caught between his long-held beliefs about trade and his recognition that Americans do not want to pay the costs of his policies. He backs off the tariffs when the pain threatens markets or when China’s export restrictions threaten American manufacturers, but he has not simply abandoned the project. The result has been a tariff regime that has raised 20% prices, confused companies and alienated allies but DE DESCUENTO has accomplished very little. The pivot to isolating China was short-lived — after all the tumult, the added tariff on most Chinese goods is 20% and Trump is now selling advanced Nvidia chips to China. The labor market is weakening. Deficits are rising. Brigitte Bardot, movie icon who renounced stardom, dies at 91 By ANITA GATES
B
rigitte Bardot, the pouty, tousle-haired French actress who redefined mid20th-century movie sex symbolism in films beginning with “And God Created Woman,” then gave up acting at 39 to devote her life to the welfare of animals, died Sunday at her home in southern France. She was 91. Fondation Brigitte Bardot, which she established for the protection of animals, announced her death. Bardot was 23 when “And God Created Woman,” a box-office flop in France in 1956, opened in the United States the next year and made her an international star. Bosley Crowther, writing in The New York Times, called her “undeniably a creation of superlative craftsmanship” and “a phenomenon you have to see to believe.” Like many critics, he was unimpressed by the film itself. Bardot’s film persona was distinctive, compared with other movie sex symbols of the time, not only for her ripe youthfulness but also for her unapologetic carnal appetite. Her director was her husband, Roger Vadim, and although they soon divorced, he continued to shape her public image, directing her in four more movies over the next two decades. The author Simone de Beauvoir, in a 1959 essay, “Brigitte Bardot and the Lolita Syndrome,” saw Bardot’s powerful onscreen erotic presence as a feminist challenge to “the tyranny of the patriarchal gaze” represented by the movie camera. The challenge failed, Beauvoir concluded, but it was a “noble failure.” Few of Bardot’s movies were serious cinematic undertakings, and she later told a French newspaper that she considered “La Vérité,” Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Oscar-nominated 1960 crime drama, the only good film she ever made. Nicknamed B.B. (pronounced in French much like the word for baby), she was best known for light comedies like “The Bride Is Much Too Beautiful” (1956), “Babette Goes to War” (1959) and “The Vixen” (1969), but she did work with some of France’s most respected directors. Early in her career she appeared in René Clair’s “Grandes Manoeuvres” (1955). Jean-Luc Godard directed her in the 1963 film-industry drama “Contempt.” Louis Malle was her director on “A Very Private Affair” (1962), a drama that also starred Marcello
Mastroianni, and “Viva Maria!” (1965), a western comedy in which she and Jeanne Moreau played singing strippers who become revolutionaries in early-20th-century Central America. That film earned her the only acting-award nomination of her career, as best foreign actress, from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Although she made several films in English, Bardot never worked in the United States. The closest she came to Hollywood roles were small parts, when she was still unknown, in Robert Wise’s “Helen of Troy” (1956), a Warner Bros. picture filmed in Italy, and “Act of Love” (1953), a Kirk Douglas film shot in France and directed by Anatole Litvak. “Shalako,” a 1968 western in which she was cast opposite Sean Connery, was a British-German production filmed in Spain and England. At the height of her popularity, almost everything about Bardot was copied — her deliberately messy hairstyle, her heavy eye makeup and her fashion choices, which included tight knit tops; skinny pants; gingham; and flounced skirts showing off bare, suntanned legs. In 1969, she became the first celebrity to be used as the model for Marianne, a traditional symbol of the French Republic that adorns town halls across the country. In a statement on Sunday, France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, said, “Her films, her voice, her dazzling fame, her initials, her sorrows, her generous passion for animals, her face that became Marianne — Brigitte Bardot embodied a life of freedom.” She helped turn St.-Tropez, once a quiet fishing port in the South of France, into a painfully fashionable resort town after she bought a home there in 1958. Two decades later, when she publicly complained about the deteriorating quality of life in St.-Tropez, the mayor replied, “I ask the question: Who brought vice and lewdness here?” When Bardot announced her retirement from films in 1973, she had already begun her work on behalf of animal rights and welfare (although she had told an American reporter in 1965, “I adore furs”). But it was only in 1986, a year after she was made a chevalier of France’s Legion of Honor, that she created the Fondation Brigitte Bardot, based in Paris, which has waged battles against wolf hunting, bullfighting, vivisection and the consumption of horse meat. In 1987, she auctioned off her jewelry and other personal belongings to ensure the foundation’s finan-

It called Bardot “an exceptional woman who gave everything and sacrificed everything for a world that is more respectful of animals.” In recent decades, Bardot continued to appear in public to promote animal rights, but she gained notoriety for her political views, which many saw as racist. This came to particular light in her two-volume memoir, “Initiales B.B.” (1996-97), in which she made negative comments about several groups, including Muslims. In 2004, she was convicted of inciting racial hatred, and fined, for similar comments in “A Cry in the Silence,” a nonfiction bestseller in which she referred to Muslims as “cruel and barbaric invaders” and made derogatory comments about gay people. By 2008, she had been convicted of the same charge five times. At best, Bardot was considered eccentric in her later years, prompting observations that this former sex kitten, as she was often called, had turned into a “crazy cat lady.” Interviewed by the magazine Paris Match in January 2018, she denounced the #MeToo
movement, calling actresses’ claims of sexual harassment “hypocritical, ridiculous, without interest.” Brigitte Bardot was born into wealth on Sept. 28, 1934, in Paris, the older of two daughters of Louis and Anne-Marie Bardot. Her father was an industrialist, and she grew up in the city’s affluent 16th arrondissement. She began modeling as a teenager and appeared on the cover of Elle magazine at 15. Her parents objected both to her acting aspirations and to her relationship with Vadim, then a young assistant to the film director Marc Allégret. This led to the first of at least four reported suicide attempts. The Bardots eventually relented about Vadim, and she married him in 1952, less than three months after her 18th birthday. She had already made her film debut that year in “Manina, la Fille Sans Voile,” a romantic adventure that was released in the United States six years later as “The Girl in the Bikini,” and a family comedy, “Le Trou Normand.” By the time “And God Created Woman” made Bardot a star, she had appeared in more than a dozen films. She would make fewer than four dozen altogether. Her last movie appearance was a supporting role in “The Edifying and Joyous Story of Colinot,” a 1973 comedy about a young man’s numerous romantic encounters. (She played an older woman who taught him valuable life lessons.) Her last starring role was in “If Don Juan Were a Woman,” a poorly reviewed 1973 drama directed by Vadim that was released in the United States in 1976. Bardot married four times and had well-publicized long-term romantic relationships with other men, including actor JeanLouis Trintignant and singer and songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. She and Vadim divorced in 1957. Her second husband (1959-62) was actor Jacques Charrier, with whom she had a son. After the couple divorced, the boy was brought up by Charrier’s parents, but he reconciled with his mother in adulthood. Charrier died in 2025. Bardot was married to Gunter Sachs, a German industrialist, from 1966 to 1969. After their divorce, she did not marry again until 1992. She is survived by her fourth husband, Bernard d’Ormale, a former adviser to the late right-wing French politician Jean-Marie Le Pen; her son, Nicolas Charrier; a sister, Marie-Jeanne Bardot; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

all Street ended a light-volume post-Christmas session nearly unchanged on Friday, with few catalysts to fuel much conviction one way or the other. All three major U.S. stock indexes closed nominally lower, snapping a five-session rally, but logged weekly gains. “We had a very strong five-day rally, so in a way we’re just simply catching our breath today after the holiday,” said Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group in Omaha. “This is only day two of the official Santa Claus rally period, so we still have some time, and we think there’s going to be

In Myanmar’s election, ‘voting out of fear, not hope’ By SURI-LEE WEE
A
s voters went to the polls Sunday for the first round of a heavily stagemanaged election in Myanmar, the outcome was all but assured. The military junta that has ruled the country since seizing power in 2021 was almost certain to maintain its iron grip on power. Some still hoped there was room for change. But turnout even in the country’s biggest cities, Yangon and Mandalay, appeared far lighter than it had been in the 2020 and 2015 elections, reflecting a more pessimistic mood. “I don’t believe this election will really change things, but I came anyway to avoid trouble,” said Sandy Chit, 34, a cosmetics seller in Mandalay. “Many people here are voting out of fear, not hope.” “We have to do something,” said Nant Khin Aye Oo, chair of the Kayin People’s Party, one of the few parties that was not barred from fielding candidates. “We can’t live under this anymore.” The military has governed Myanmar for most of its history since gaining independence from Britain in 1948. For about a decade starting in 2010, the country was seen as an exemplar for democracy after the military handed some power to a civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi, who had long been the beloved opposition leader. That ended in 2021 when the army announced that it would not recognize the 2020 election victory by Suu Kyi’s party. There is a widespread feeling in Myanmar that the generals have severely misman-

The military — now estimated to control less than half of the country — also hopes that the elections to determine the next parliament will create an air of legitimacy that may give other countries an opening to embrace what is now largely a pariah state. With the vote taking place on three separate days over the next few weeks, it will be hard to draw quick conclusions. Ballots will be cast only in the areas under military control. Results are not expected until after the final day of voting on Jan. 25. Despite its firm hold on power, the junta has left nothing to chance. It disbanded
40 political parties, including the National League for Democracy, which was led by Suu Kyi, who was jailed after the coup. The military’s proxy party, the Union Solidarity and Development Party, is effectively running uncontested in many areas. More than 100 people have been arrested since July for violating a new law that makes it a crime to criticize the election. One of them is Yan Naing Kyi Win, who was sentenced to 49 years in prison in November for putting up anti-election stickers in public areas. “He did so to show that the people do not want the military, even though it plans to continue ruling in civilian guise without real change,” said his twin brother, Yan Naung Kyi Win. He said his brother had been beaten and tortured in prison. Wai Yan Aung, 42, a civil servant in Mandalay, said he went to vote because his office said that his participation would be checked. “For people like me, this is not really a choice,” he said. “At the same time, I know colleagues who did not come. Some are afraid, some are sick of pretending, and some believe this election has no meaning.” Nilar Nwe, 41, a sundry goods seller in Yangon, said, “All the people understand that they have to come and vote.” “It’s better not to come,” she said, “but I can’t do as I wish.” In Naypyidaw, the capital, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, who led the 2021 coup,
emerged grinning from the polling station, showing off his left pinkie dyed purple as a sign of having voted. “We can confidently guarantee that the election is free and fair because it is being carried out by the military,” he said. “Our military will not allow its reputation to be tarnished.” Some members of the country’s dwindling opposition said they were determined to make their voices heard. Ko Ko Gyi, a veteran pro-democracy activist, who is running for a seat in Yangon under the People’s Party, acknowledged that there were issues with the elections, but said they were the most pragmatic way forward. “What’s the better alternative?” he asked. “Whether we like it or not, we cannot move the military out of politics,” he said. Like several others, Ko Ko Gyi said the vote could result in a parliament with enough authority, while still limited, to divert some power from Min Aung Hlaing. But others in the opposition have condemned any participation, saying that it contributes to a democratic veneer on what many have called a sham election. The National Unity Government, Myanmar’s shadow government in exile, has said that officials, poll workers or candidates participating in this election are collaborating with “the enemy of the state.” Many people in Myanmar interviewed before the vote said they had decided not to participate. On Sunday, the military launched an airstrike in the Khin-U township, in the central region of Sagaing, killing nine people, according to social media footage and rebels in Khin-U. The army did not respond to a request for comment. In the hours before the polls opened, social media footage showed an explosion at a USDP office in Myawaddy. One person was killed and at least a dozen others injured, according to a local official in Myawaddy. In the city of Mandalay, there was a similar incident at a polling station, according to the city’s chief minister. The polls have been widely condemned by many governments in the West, though notably not the Trump administration, which said plans for “free and fair elections” represented progress for the country. Ballots will be cast only in areas under military control. Arkar Min Naing, 28, a civil engineer, said he had decided not to vote. “For me, this election does not represent the will of the people,” he said. “Not voting is my way of saying I do not accept this process.”

Families demand answers a year after deadliest plane crash in South Korea By JIN YU and JOHN YOON
A
year after the worst plane crash on South Korean soil killed 179 people, the families of some of the victims are still camped out in tents on the second floor of Muan International Airport, desperately seeking answers despite multiple continuing investigations. “I wonder why we keep facing the same questions, feel the same sadness, and feel the same anger over and over again,” Kim Yu-jin, a representative of the victims’ families, said at a recent news conference in the nearby city of Gwangju. She lost both parents and her brother in the crash. On Dec. 29, 2024, Jeju Air Flight 2216 from Bangkok skidded off the runway at Muan Airport, hit a wall and exploded. Only two onboard survived. But much is still unclear about what caused the crash. What is known is that the plane hit a flock of birds and made an emergency turn before belly flopping onto the runway, where it smashed into the concrete berm. Investigators from the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board, a government agency under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport that is leading the main inquiry into the crash, have shared little about their findings. When they have tried to give briefings, they have been blocked by the victims’ families who are seeking to restructure the main investigating body, arguing that it lacks independence from the country’s Transport Ministry. Investigations by The New York Times have shown that officials missed warnings about the dangers posed by flocks of birds near the airport and over the risks of the concrete wall at the end of the runway. Over the past year, the Transport Ministry has pledged to overhaul aviation safety by improving runway infrastructure at nearly half of the nation’s 15 commercial airports and to improve the safety practices of nine budget airlines. Kennedy likely to swap US childhood vaccine schedule for Denmark’s By APOORVA MANDAVILLI
O
ver the last year, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his appointees have taken tentative steps toward his long-standing goal of remaking the childhood vaccination schedule. But emboldened by a directive from President Donald Trump, Kennedy is now poised to make a seismic shift. He is expected to announce in the new year that American children should be immunized according to a different schedule with fewer vaccines, used by the much smaller, largely homogenous country of Denmark. A wholesale revision of the schedule would bypass the evidence-based, committee-led process that has underpinned vaccine recommendations in the country for decades, and could affect whether private insurance and government assistance programs will cover the shots. And many medical experts worry that losing strong endorsements of some vaccines will create financial and logistical hurdles to obtaining them, further erode Americans’ confidence in immunizations and increase the chances of disease outbreaks. Measles and whooping cough are already resurgent in multiple states because of dropping vaccination rates. It is states, not the federal government, that decide which shots are mandated for children to attend day care or kindergarten. And the specifics of changes in the vaccine schedule are as yet unclear. Also unclear is whether any changes will still protect vaccine manufacturers from being sued for claims of harm. Without that guarantee, companies might face “frivolous” lawsuits and flee the American market as they did before such protections were instituted in the 1980s, some vaccine experts warned. Trump directed Kennedy to align recommendations for childhood vaccines with “best practices from peer, developed countries,” calling the United States “a high outlier in the number of vaccinations recommended for all children.” He pointed to Denmark, Germany and Japan as examples of nations that immunize against fewer diseases. The directive said that health officials should make the changes “while preserving access to vaccines currently available to Americans,” suggesting to some public health experts that those who wish to get them may still be able to do so in consultation with a health care provider. Still, even if only some Americans follow
a reshaped schedule that includes fewer immunizations, medical experts said, it is almost certain to lead to more cases of infectious disease. “They’re going to bring back suffering and death,” said Dr. Sean O’Leary, chair of the infectious disease committee for the American Academy of Pediatrics. “I don’t say that with any hyperbole. That’s exactly what’s going to happen.” The Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The United States currently recommends immunizing all children against 17 diseases. Adopting Denmark’s schedule would skip shots against seven of these: respiratory syncytial virus — the leading cause of infant hospitalizations in the United States — influenza, rotavirus, chickenpox, meningitis, hepatitis A and hepatitis B. Health officials in Denmark and Germany said they were baffled by the Trump administration’s push to emulate their countries. Traditionally, they have looked to the United States as a leader for its meticulous process of review and recommendation of vaccinations. The officials noted that the childhood vaccination schedule in the United States had been tailored for the country’s large and diverse population and patchy system of medical care. Denmark and Germany have comprehensive free prenatal care and an infant mortality rate that is about half that of the United States. “It’s not at all fair to say look at Denmark unless you can match the other characteristics of Denmark,” said Anders Hviid, who leads research on vaccine safety and effectiveness at the Statens Serum Institut, Denmark’s equivalent of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Denmark’s health care system purchases vaccines for its citizens. It omits shots for some diseases from the childhood schedule because they do not pose enough of a problem there to make the vaccines cost-effective, not because of concerns about safety, Hviid said. He said he was struck by the irony of Kennedy and his associates holding Denmark up as an ideal because many of the studies that disproved Kennedy’s theories of vaccine harm were led by Danish health officials. Research by Hviid and his colleagues recently showed that aluminum salts, which are used to enhance the immune response produced by vaccines, are not associated with any of 50 conditions including allergies, asthma and autism. In the United States, “it turns out to get crazier and crazier in public health from month to month,” Hviid said. “It is surreal, and it is difficult, from a Danish perspective, to understand what’s going on.” Dr. Reinhard Berner, a pediatric infectious diseases expert in Germany and chair of STIKO, the independent committee that recommends vaccines for Germans, said the decisions in his country were not based on safety concerns, but on the prevalence of diseases there. In the United States, a federal panel called the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP, recommends vaccines for Americans. By law, insurance companies are required to cover the shots that the panel recommends. Over decades, the committee has built
the childhood vaccination schedule after methodically reviewing data on the safety and effectiveness of each shot, the ideal timing for its administration, whether it should be given with other shots and other practical considerations. The committee members typically included immunologists, pediatricians and other health care professionals with expertise in vaccines. Those experts were vetted over many months before being invited to join the committee. Kennedy in June dismissed all 17 voting members of the advisory committee. He later replaced them with 12 new members, few of whom have vaccine expertise and many of whom share Kennedy’s skepticism of vaccines. O’Leary said the vaccines recommended for American children by previous advisory committees had been included after careful consideration of the risks the diseases posed to Americans. The rotavirus vaccine, for example, which is not included in Denmark’s list, nearly eliminated the tens of thousands of hospitalizations the disease caused in the United States each year. Likewise, before routine vaccination, chickenpox led to as many as 13,500 hospitalizations and killed up to 150 people in the United States annually. Shingles, which can be caused by the same virus later in life, can be debilitating and excruciatingly painful. “So which diseases are they choosing to bring back to the U.S.?” O’Leary said. “Do we want to bring back deaths from chickenpox?” The pediatrics academy’s own recommendations still align with the schedule put together by the previous members of ACIP. At least for the moment, many states, and most professional societies and insurance companies, have signaled that, they, too, will stick with that schedule, rather than follow the changes the Trump administration appointees proposed. If states did follow a new schedule, they might open themselves up to lawsuits from parents who were unable to get the shots for their children. Still, the disagreements among officials will undermine trust in vaccines, O’Leary warned. So far this year, the country has recorded nearly 2,000 cases of measles in 49 outbreaks, the most since the United States was declared free of the disease 25 years ago. Most of the cases have occurred in pockets of low vaccination. If the outbreaks do not abate, the country is in danger of losing its elimination status in late January.

COLICEBA President Sandrelly Córdova presented the championship trophy to Guapos owner Joey Solá, manager Nelson Molina, and Dorado Mayor Aníbal José Torres.
os Guapos de Dorado were crowned champions of the Confederation of the Central Amateur Baseball League (COLICEBA) on Saturday after defeating the Arroyo Buccaneers 7–2 at Perucho Cepeda Stadium in Cataño. Dorado closed out the championship series in six games, marking the first title for the Guapos in their debut year in the tournament. Right-hander Andrés Santiago pitched a complete game to earn his third win of the series, allowing eight hits and two runs, one of them unearned. His dominant performance earned him selection as the series’ Most Valuable Player. Six of the Guapos’ seven runs were scored in the bottom of the third inning. The first two runs came on a double by Pedro Crespo. This
was followed by an RBI double by Jonathan Nieves that drove in the third run, and another double by Ian Laureano that added two more runs to the scoreboard. Arroyo attempted a comeback in the sixth inning with two runs, including a solo home run by Tony Brian Méndez. Left-hander Miguel Fontánez took the loss for the Buccaneers after allowing six runs in 2.1 innings pitched. At the conclusion of the game, COLICEBA President Sandrelly Córdova presented the championship trophy to Guapos owner Joey Solá, manager Nelson Molina, and Dorado Mayor Aníbal José Torres. Meanwhile, Buccaneers owner Antonio “Papulyn” Soto received the runner-up trophy. Córdova was accompanied by COLICEBA Vice President Ramón “Moncho” Meléndez and tournament director Efraín “Cano” García.
Carolina Ponce & Santurce win in LBPRC By THE STAR STAFF
T
he Carolina Giants, Ponce Lions and Santurce Crabbers all closed Saturday with victories as the 2025–26 Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (LBPRC) regular season heads down the stretch. A five-run outburst in the third inning po wered the Carolina Giants to a 6–2 victory over the Caguas Criollos, sealing Carolina’s berth in the postseason. With the win, the Giants secured third place in the standings, improving to 20–19. The Criollos slipped to fourth at 19–20 but remain very much alive in the race for the final playoff spot. Caguas struck early with three hits in the first inning, capped by Nelson Velázquez’s two-run single to right field. That would be all they could manage against starter R.J. Martínez, who earned the win to improve to 4–2 after five solid innings. The righthander allowed four hits, struck out four and issued two walks. Carolina answered emphatically in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on its patience against veteran left-hander Héctor Santiago. Catcher Miguel Pabón sparked the rally with a leadoff single, followed by a bunt from Steven Ondina that resulted in an
error. After a sacrifice fly by Gabriel Cancel moved the runners, Santiago lost the strike zone, issuing three consecutive walks to Abimelec Ortiz, Johnathan Rodríguez and Felix Stevens to force in the tying runs. With the bases still loaded, Deniel Ortiz delivered a clutch single to give the Giants a 4–2 lead. Santiago was lifted, and reliever Roel Ramírez allowed a sacrifice fly to Jan Hernández, extending Carolina’s advantage to 5–2. Pabón later added his third hit of the night, driving in the sixth run in the eighth inning. Santiago (1–3) took the loss, surrendering five runs—three earned—in 2.1 innings. Ricardo Vélez notched his fourth save for Carolina with two scoreless frames. In Ponce, Anthony Calarco delivered the walk-off heroics, singling in the 10th inning to lift the Lions to a 2–1 win over the Mayagüez Indians at Francisco “Paquito” Montaner Stadium. The playoff-bound Lions improved to 23–16, while Mayagüez fell to 18–21, remaining in fifth place, one game behind Caguas. The Indians must win their finale and hope for a Criollos loss to force a tiebreaker scenario. The game featured a classic pitching duel between starters Ashton Goudeau
(Mayagüez) and Bryant Salgado (Ponce) through six innings. Ponce scored first in the seventh on a balk, while Mayagüez tied it in the eighth via a bases-loaded walk. Harold Cortijo (3–1) earned the win, and Carlos Francisco (2–1) took the loss. Meanwhile, the Santurce Crabbers defeated the San Juan Senators 4–1 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium. Santurce, the league’s undisputed leader, improved to 26–13, while
eliminated San Juan dropped to 11–28. After San Juan struck first, Yohandy Morales tied the game with a solo homer in the fourth. Santurce broke it open in the seventh with three runs, fueled by a sacrifice fly, an RBI double and a fielding error. Jason García earned the win in relief, Chavez Fernander picked up his first save, and Francisco López was charged with the loss.
