s drought conditions continue to intensify across Puerto Rico, the Association of Public Servants of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) renewed calls on Sunday for Gov. Jenniffer González to urgently request a major disaster declaration from the federal government. The appeal comes as the administration maintains that it must first complete ongoing damage assessments before petitioning Washington. Maritza Santaliz, president of the association, said the group is backing 25 Democratic lawmakers who joined Resident Com‑ missioner Pablo José Hernández last week in urging González to formally request federal intervention from President Donald Trump. The request follows mounting operational challenges at the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) and rapidly declining reservoir levels. Santaliz warned that the water crisis is already affecting “schools, hospitals and public offices that provide essential services,” arguing that temporary measures are no longer sufficient. Mayors from the nine municipalities dependent on the La Plata reservoir have endorsed preventive rationing to preserve the lake’s remaining supply, but González has rejected scheduled interruptions, even as experts predict further declines in water levels. Local leaders from both the New Progressive Party (PNP) and the PPD in Bayamón, Cataño, Corozal, Dorado, Guaynabo, Naranjito, Toa Alta, Toa Baja and Vega Alta reported that La Plata currently serves more than 130,000 customers, underscoring the scale of the potential impact. According to Peña Payano, agricultural losses vary signifi‑ cantly by crop, making uniform estimates impossible. “It’s not the same to evaluate damages in coffee as it is in plantains or other crops,” he said, noting that federal programs require precise documentation of losses. He added that federal agencies — including NOAA — must confirm the severity of drought conditions and classify affected areas under D3 (extreme drought) before certain aid mecha‑ nisms can be activated. “The government, through PRFAA and the state government, is conducting that evaluation to continue communication with the federal government,” Peña Payano said. onsignor Geraldo Ramírez Torres was ordained Saturday as the new bishop of the Diocese of Ponce during a ceremony held at the Sports and Cultural Complex of the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. The event was attended by Governor Jenniffer Aydin González Colón, former governors, Ponce Mayor Marlese Sifre Rodríguez, as well as mayors, legislators and religious and political leaders. In his first message as bishop, Ramírez Torres expressed gratitude for his vocation and remembered his late parents, Andrés and Emma, and his brother Pascual. He also thanked his siblings and the Marist religious community for their support throughout his priestly ministry. The new bishop expressed gratitude to Pope Leo XIV for

entrusting him with the leadership of the Diocese of Ponce, particularly as the diocese celebrates its 100th anniversary. Ramírez Torres asked for wisdom and emphasized that his episcopal ministry must be based on service rather than power. “I humbly ask the Lord to grant me a gentle heart, capable of discerning His will before seeking my own criteria,” he said. Governor González Colón presented him with a recog‑ nition for his years of service, while Mayor Sifre highlighted his longstanding ties to Ponce. Since 2007, Ramírez Torres had served as chaplain for Puerto Rico’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Governor announces $244.5 million FEMA disbursement to advance critical infrastructure projects By THE STAR STAFF

overnor Jenniffer González Colón an‑ nounced on Sunday the release of $244.5 million in federal funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to accel‑ erate the reconstruction of essential infrastructure, including potable water, electric power, public housing, and municipal roads. According to the governor, the investment will help advance strategic projects to strengthen the island’s critical infrastructure and ensure the continuity of essential services for thousands of residents across multiple municipalities. The newly released funds include $193.2 million for the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA); $41.2 million for the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (AEE), including $1.6 mil‑ lion for LUMA‑executed work; $9 million for the Public Housing Administration (AVP); and $1.1 million for the Municipality of Adjuntas.

From January through August, the Central Of‑ fice for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience (COR3) has disbursed approximately $1.3 billion in FEMA‑assigned federal funds for Puerto Rico’s reconstruction. “Each disbursement represents projects mov‑

ing forward, and with that, communities gaining safer and more resilient infrastructure,” said COR3 Executive Director María L. Marín Colón. She emphasized that the agency remains committed to processing funding requests swiftly so subre‑ cipients have the resources they need to maintain project momentum. Marín Colón noted that FEMA programs oper‑ ate through reimbursement or advance mecha‑ nisms, depending on the type of request and the progress of each project. One of the projects receiving an advance—$75 million—is the reconstruction of the Sergio Cue‑ vas Water Treatment Plant, one of Puerto Rico’s most important potable water facilities. The AAA project includes modernizing flow‑measurement systems, rehabilitating tanks and sludge‑treatment components, and installing new pumps and other essential equipment to improve reliability and efficiency. Another AAA project, awarded $35.8 million,

will rehabilitate the Culebrinas Water Treatment Plant and Pumping Station in Aguadilla, benefiting more than 18,500 families in the region. For the AEE, most of the funding will support vegetation‑management projects, a key strategy to reduce service interruptions and improve grid reliability. The government has also incorporated the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to ac‑ celerate work along critical transmission corridors, expanding operational capacity and reducing outage risks caused by overgrown vegetation. The $9 million allocated to the AVP will support improvements across six public housing complexes, including roof waterproofing, drain‑ age restoration, replacement of doors, windows, and lighting systems, as well as structural and architectural repairs. The Municipality of Adjuntas will receive $1.1 million to repair a roadway in the Yahuecas sector, improving access and strengthening local transportation infrastructure.

PRASA reassigns Carolina communities to new water interruption zone By THE STAR STAFF

he Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Au‑ thority (PRASA) announced operational changes to its Scheduled Interruption Plan for the Sergio Cuevas Filtration Plant, shifting two Carolina communities—Escorial and Jardines de Carolina—from Zone 2 to Zone 1 beginning Monday, August 17. The adjustment affects 3,081 customers, including 2,639 in Escorial and 442 in Jardines de Carolina, according to José A. Rivera Ortiz, director of AAA’s Metro Region. ASA officials said the change is intended to improve the speed and consistency of water

service recovery during scheduled cycles. By moving both communities into Zone 1, their service and interruption periods will now follow the timelines assigned to that zone. Rivera Ortiz explained that the decision followed an operational review of how the sys‑ tem responds during each cycle. The analysis showed that, due to the configuration of the distribution network and the way pressure and water levels recover, both communities can be served more effectively as part of Zone 1. “The cycles we’ve completed allow us to evaluate how the system responds and make adjustments where needed,” Rivera Ortiz said. “In the case of Escorial and Jardines de

Carolina, this change will help improve the recovery process for the 3,081 customers in these communities.” PRASA noted that water service restoration during the 48‑hour “on” period is gradual. Tunnels, tanks, and distribution components must refill and stabilize before water reaches all sectors. Customers in higher elevations or areas farther from the main network may experience longer recovery times. Rivera Ortiz emphasized that zone adjust‑ ments are normal during the implementation of scheduled interruption plans. “As we evalu‑ ate system behavior, we make the operational changes needed to improve recovery and

distribution. Our goal is always to restore service as quickly as possible and minimize the impact on communities.” PRASA will continue monitoring the system and will announce any additional changes through its official channels. The agency urged residents to use water respon‑ sibly once service is restored, prioritizing essential needs and avoiding unnecessary consumption to help stabilize supply across all affected areas. CODEPOLA rejects new restrictions on the sale of ammunition and asks the Police to use existing tools By THE STAR STAFF

he president of the Corporation for the Defense of the Licensed Gun Owner of Puerto Rico (CODEPOLA), Ariel Torres Meléndez, rejected the Police Bureau’s inten‑ tion to promote amendments to the Weapons Law to establish additional controls on the sale of ammunition. Torres Meléndez stated that the Police al‑ ready have information on legal transactions of weapons and ammunition through the REAL System, where data such as the identity of the buyer, license number, date, quantity acquired

and establishment where the sale was made are recorded. The leader of CODEPOLA objects to gun dealers being responsible for identifying suspicious buyers or referring transactions to the police. He explained that their obligation is to register each sale in the system, while it is the agency’s responsibility to analyze the information and determine if there is grounds for an investigation. Torres Meléndez pointed out that acquiring a considerable amount of ammunition does not, in itself, constitute evidence of criminal activity, since sport shooters, instructors, competitors

and other citizens can make larger purchases for legitimate reasons. CODEPOLA demanded that the Police report how many transactions registered in the REAL System have been linked to crimes, how many purchases considered atypical were investigated and what actions were taken. “Before requesting new restrictions, the Police must explain how they are using the tools they already have,” Torres Meléndez said. The organization stated that security efforts should focus on illegal trafficking, smuggling, and criminal organizations, rather than impos‑ ing greater controls on law-abiding citizens

and merchants. Torres Meléndez also questioned the po‑ lice’s administrative management and men‑ tioned a pending appeal before the Court of Appeals related to the revocation of a firearms license. According to the allegations in the case, the agency failed to comply with a court order in a timely manner. CODEPOLA reiterated that it will evaluate any legislative proposal related to weapons and ammunition and will demand that new measures be based on evidence, respect due process, and do not impose arbitrary restric‑ tions on licensed citizens.

Democratic National Committee opposes proposal to end birthright citizenship in Puerto Rico By THE STAR STAFF

he Democratic National Committee (DNC) has formally rejected a congressional proposal that would eliminate automatic U.S. citizenship for children born in Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories, warning that the measure underscores the vulnerability of territorial residents under current federal law. The resolution, advanced by the Democratic Party of Puerto Rico and ratified during the DNC’s Summer Meeting in Austin, Texas, affirms statehood as the party’s principal status alternative for the island and calls for a definitive legislative solution to Puerto Rico’s

political future. Luis D. Dávila Pernas, president of the Puerto Rico Democratic Party and a DNC member, said the proposal highlights the fragility of statutory citizenship for territorial residents. “Puerto Ricans proudly treasure our American citizenship, but while Puerto Rico remains a territory, that citizenship rests on a statutory foundation subject to Congress,” he said. He argued that only statehood can permanently secure citizenship rights. The resolution directly opposes H.R. 9724, a bill introduced by Republican Rep. Morgan Griffith, which seeks to restrict birthright citizenship in Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin

Islands, and other territories when parents are not U.S. citizens. The DNC stated that the legislation demonstrates how fundamental rights can be altered under the territorial system and reinforces the urgency of resolving Puerto Rico’s status. Party leaders also reaffirmed support for the Puerto Rico Status Act and pledged that, if Democrats regain control of Congress and the White House, they will prioritize legislation offering a binding statehood option to the island. Dávila Pernas noted that Puerto Rico has rejected territorial status in four plebiscites — 2012, 2017, 2020, and 2024 — and has repeatedly favored statehood. In the 2024 vote,

conducted using the definitions outlined in the Puerto Rico Status Act, statehood received 58.61% support. The resolution further commits the DNC to working with Democratic leaders in Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa to advance equality, democratic governance, and full constitutional protections for U.S. citizens living in the territories. House prioritizes tax reform, water, schools and housing in new legislative session By THE STAR STAFF

educing taxes, modernizing schools, building housing for the working class, rebuilding water infrastructure, and developing the former Roosevelt Roads naval base are among the priorities of Speaker of the House Carlos “Johnny” Méndez for the second legislative session of 2026, which begins this Monday. Méndez emphasized that he will seek to promote tax reform, following the approval of a $560 million refund in the previous session. According to the House leader, the measure should benefit both citizens and small and medium-sized businesses. “This is one of the most important sessions of the four-year term. We have an aggressive agenda aimed at improving the quality of life in our communities,” he said. The House will also work on measures to reduce government bureaucracy and simplify

According to data cited by the House, more than 11,700 children and some 21,500 adults have been diagnosed with autism. The development of the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Ceiba is also on the agenda. Méndez emphasized the need to improve the facility’s water and sewage system, whose infrastructure operates independently of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority. For his part, the president of the Government Commission, Víctor Parés, will work on a project called “The New Water Law for the Puerto Rico of the 21st Century”, aimed at increasing the stor-

age, distribution and maintenance capacity of the drinking water infrastructure. Medicaid and Housing The House will also seek to maintain the federal Medicaid reimbursement level at 76%, an agreement that expires in 2027. Méndez argued that the issue is a priority due to its impact on some 700,000 people in Puerto Rico. Regarding housing, the Speaker of the House estimated that approximately 50,000 residential units are needed, particularly for the working class. The Housing Committee, chaired by Representative Omayra Martínez, will evaluate alternatives to address the demand. Currently, about 65 new homes are being built each month, a figure that Méndez considers insufficient given the country’s needs. The legislative agenda also includes oversight of the electrical system, public safety, artificial intelligence, and health-related issues.

irst Gentleman José Yovín Vargas began the delivery of water tanks to public housing complexes, starting in the Las Casas complex, as part of an initiative aimed at strengthening the water storage capacity of families in the face of possible service interruptions. During the project launch, Yovín was accompanied by the Secretary of the Department of Housing, Luis Augusto Martínez Román, and the Public Housing Administrator, Juan A. Rosario Hernández. In this first phase, 160 cisterns with a capacity of 60 gallons each were delivered, for

a total of 9,600 gallons of storage and an approximate investment of $25,000. The initiative will benefit residents of 420 apartments in the housing complex. “We are starting in Las Casas by bringing a solution directly to our residents. We know the difficulties caused by a water service interruption, and it is our responsibility to respond with actions that help our families be better prepared,” Yovín said. As part of the effort, six community cisterns of 1,000 gallons each were also installed, with the goal of expanding the storage capacity available to residents. The Secretary of Housing emphasized that

this type of initiative helps prepare communities for situations that could affect the supply of drinking water. “This delivery strengthens the preparedness of the families in the Las Casas residential area and reaffirms our commitment to continue working as a team to provide them with greater security and peace of mind in the face of water service interruptions,” said Martínez Román. Yovín announced that the initiative will be extended to other public housing complexes to address the needs identified in the communities. “We started in Las Casas and we will continue to bring this aid to our public housing, directly addressing the needs of our people,”

he said. The project has the support of the Fire Department for filling the cisterns and seeks to offer an immediate alternative to public housing families, in addition to strengthening the response capacity of communities to service interruptions. For his part, the Public Housing administrator highlighted that the cisterns represent an additional tool for residents to cope with periods without water service. “We will continue to identify alternatives that strengthen the response capacity and wellbeing of families living in our public housing,” said Rosario Hernández.

Prosecutors examined firm with tie to judge in Trump hush money trial

T

he U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago has spent the past year investigating a Democratic fundraising firm once co-owned by the daughter of the judge in President Donald Trump’s hush-money trial in New York, according to court filings and people familiar with the inquiry. Last August, the U.S. attorney, Andrew S. Boutros of the Northern District of Illinois, directed Authentic Campaigns Inc. to turn over a broad range of internal communications with clients. They included former Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Joe Biden, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and the Democratic National Committee, according to a grand jury subpoena reviewed by The New York Times. Loren Merchan, the daughter of Juan Merchan, a state Supreme Court judge in Manhattan, was the firm’s vice president until late 2024 and was also on the list. The Merchan family has been a frequent target of Trump and his allies, who have made unsubstantiated claims that the judge was out to get him and that his daughter profited from accusations aired at the trial. The trial ended with Trump’s conviction in 2024, in the midst of his campaign for a second term, on 34 felony counts stemming from his efforts to keep a porn actor from publicizing her story of a liaison with him. The firm’s legal team, which included Preet

Bharara, the former top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, sought to limit the request. Prosecutors eventually modified the subpoena, narrowing it to focus on a $468 payment from Harris’ presidential campaign, and emails between Loren Merchan and her father, according to people with knowledge of the inquiry who requested anonymity to discuss an ongoing legal matter. It is not clear where the investigation stands. No follow-up subpoenas have been issued to individuals, suggesting that prosecutors might not be actively working to charge anyone, those people added. The inquiry is the latest indication of the extent to which U.S. attorneys offices across the country, once largely removed from political machinations in Washington, have increasingly been drawn into Trump’s effort to target his adversaries. In this case, prosecutors sought the subpoena that came from a criminal referral from Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee. The panel made the referral after Mike Nellis, the founder of Authentic Campaigns, refused to provide the committee with confidential emails it was seeking, including those between Loren Merchan and her father. “The Trump administration’s targeting of my company is an outrageous abuse of power,” Nellis said when asked about the investigation. “It is a ridiculous fishing expedition based on conspiracy theories that are completely divorced from reality.” He accused the department of seeking to seize the “sensitive political communications of my clients who are among Trump’s most prominent political adversaries.” A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment, as did Juan and Loren Merchan. The language in the subpoena is virtually identical to claims made by the House committee that Trump’s conviction in the hush money trial presided over by Juan Merchan was “potentially politically motivated.” The criminal referral also included the contention that “Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation and prosecution of President Donald J. Trump” might have been improper. The subpoena did not specify what potential crimes might have been committed in the prosecution of Trump. In addition to initially requesting information from the Harris and Biden presidential campaigns, Boutros sought material from Loren Merchan, Bragg and one of his deputies, Matthew Colangelo; Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the House; Hochul; Sen. Adam Schiff,

D-Calif.; Reps. Daniel Goldman, D-N.Y., and Lauren Underwood, D-Ill.; and the Democratic Party’s House and Senate fundraising arms, as well as the Democratic National Committee. Trump saw his hush money trial in New York, which resulted in him becoming the first former president to be convicted on felony charges, as the culmination of a yearslong effort by Democrats to destroy him. He was fighting those charges at the same time that he was defending himself against two separate federal indictments and in an election interference case in Georgia. Trump’s public pretrial attacks prompted Juan Merchan to impose a gag order to prevent him from intimidating jurors, prosecutors, witnesses and court staff. Trump’s lead defense lawyer, Todd Blanche, now the attorney general, argued to rescind the order but was unsuccessful. By the time the trial started, Merchan emerged as a main target of the defense, with the president and his allies claiming that Loren Merchan’s longtime involvement in Democratic politics was proof that the fix was in. “Judge Juan Merchan is totally compromised, and should be removed from this TRUMP Non-Case immediately. His Daughter, Loren, is a Rabid Trump Hater, who has admitted to having conversations with her father about me, and yet he gagged me,” Trump wrote on Truth Social in March 2024. The judge did not recuse himself. An ethics complaint filed by Trump allies had no effect on the trial. Juan Merchan discharged the case without any sentence or penalty after Trump was elected. But Republicans, spurred on by Trump-allied influencers like Laura Loomer, have continued to make the case that the judge, his daughter and other operatives were guilty of wrongdoing. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chair of the House Judiciary Committee, subsequently began demanding documents from the firm. He cited a theory floated by Trump supporters: that Nellis and Loren Merchan improperly used Trump’s prosecution in digital fundraising pitches on behalf of Democrats. (Trump aggressively used the criminal indictments against him to raise millions during the campaign.) “Experts have raised substantial concerns with Judge Merchan, your father, refusing to recuse himself from President Trump’s case despite your work on behalf of President Trump’s political adversaries and the financial benefit that your firm, Authentic Campaigns Inc., could receive from the prosecution and conviction,” Jordan wrote to Loren Merchan in

August 2024, requesting her correspondence with the judge. Central synagogue attack rattles Jewish New Yorkers By EMMA GOLDBERG and MAIA COLEMAN

abbath services just began at Central Synagogue on Friday night when prayers were interrupted by a crashing sound. Shouts rang out. Congregants held their breath. It was a scenario that Jewish New Yorkers have come to fear when they go to synagogue, passing through metal detectors before they pray. Worshippers had filled the pews of the prominent Upper East Side synagogue to welcome the Sabbath, when a man screamed obscenities and struck a congregant. As security escorted out the assailant, identified as 46-year-old Larry Montes, the rabbi instructed everyone to breathe and began, again, to pray. Angela Buchdahl, the senior rabbi of the community, was away for a family event, but praised other members of the clergy for comforting the congregants, continuing prayers and delivering a sermon that addressed the tension in the room. “We know what kind of city we want to live in,” said Buchdahl in an interview Saturday. “One in which people of all faiths, classes, and colors feel belonging. For Jewish New Yorkers, it has to include both safety and security on a physical level, and knowing we will not be demonized, marginalized or harassed for supporting a Jewish homeland.” News of the attack at Central Synagogue reached New York City’s Jews as they contend with threats, fears and internal divides. By the start of August, the police department recorded 360 hate crimes this year, 205 of which were targeting Jewish people. “This was a horrible attack in Central Synagogue yesterday evening,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani told reporters on Saturday. “Jewish New Yorkers should be able to go to their synagogue without having to fear for their lives.” City Hall said both the mayor and the head of the Mayor’s Office to Combat

Antisemitism reached out to Buchdahl. Mamdani has faced calls to tone down and bring more nuance to the way he criticizes Israel, particularly after he released a video that urged federal authorities to arrest the country’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Mamdani has said he is committed to protecting New York’s Jews and believes in holding Israeli leadership to account for the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Earlier this past week, a group of rabbis representing a range of religious denominations and political perspectives met with the mayor privately in city hall. Many asked that he lower the temperature. Politicians have made similar calls for sensitivity. “You can’t divorce the dramatic increase in violence targeted at the Jewish community from the political climate and the tone and tenor of the discourse around Jews and Israel,” said Micah Lasher, who won the Democratic primary in June to represent the congressional district that includes Central Synagogue, in an interview Saturday. It was not immediately clear on Saturday what prompted Montes to enter the synagogue during services Friday, or what he intended to do inside. There are no known ongoing threats to Central Synagogue, according to the mayor and the police. Soon after charging into the building, according to the police and a video of the disruption posted online, Montes was grabbed by a security guard who tried to escort him down the temple aisle and out of the building. Montes grew agitated, the video shows, punching the air with his arms and yelling into the temple’s interior. As he struggled, he hit a 63-year-old congregant in her face with his hand, cutting her lip, and spat at and head-butted a security guard, the police said. Montes also knocked over a set of candlesticks before a police sergeant who was providing security to the synagogue stepped in and arrested him. He was charged on Friday night with assault as a hate crime and criminal mischief as a hate crime, along with other charges, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Although Montes’ mental state on Sa-

turday remained unclear, a law enforcement official who was not authorized to speak publicly said he had a history of mental health issues documented with the Police Department. Before Friday, Montes had also been arrested at least three times in New York City on a series of robbery charges. A social media account that shared a name with Montes showed a handful of posts criticizing Mamdani and several more that mention Judaism or used Hebrew. This isn’t the first time that Central Synagogue has been shaken by hate. Last year, a man posted threats targeting the synagogue as he drove across the country from Utah, before he was arrested at the Lincoln Tunnel on his way into New York. The community’s head rabbi said people continued to fill the sanctuary week after week and embrace the community’s commitment to keeping its doors open to all, with security offering protection. “Ever since Oct. 7, our sanctuary has people filling the floor and into the balconies every single Friday night,” Buchdahl said. “I’m moved to tears by the resilience and strength and courage, because I know it takes a lot of courage sometimes to do that, to just show up. Showing up is not a small thing. It’s its own act of defiance.” Tisch, who is Jewish and said she grew up attending services at Central Synagogue, has spoken often about the growing number of attacks against Jews in the United States and abroad since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel. In response to some of those incidents, the city has at several points increased the presence of police officers at Jewish houses of worship and other cultural sites to bolster protections for its Jewish population. It was not clear if any such deployment was in place at Central Synagogue on Friday, but the commissioner said the temple was receiving additional police resources after the disruption. On Friday night, congregants continued singing, the rabbi at the front of the room edited her sermon to address the incident and members of the community exchanged hugs of relief and release. “I certainly had a drink,” said Arlynn Greenbaum, a member of the community who witnessed the event. “We go on. Let’s keep living.”

I

thought I knew what poverty looked like. I grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Lima, Peru, in a family of former agricultural workers who remembered what it was like to live in thatched-roof houses. So when I drove through Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma, meeting Americans in some of the poorest ZIP codes in the nation, my first reaction was one I’m not particularly proud of. The people we met drove cars, lived in houses with airconditioning, owned washing machines and bought groceries with electronic benefits cards. I found it hard to empathize with their circumstances: They reminded me less of my neighbors in Lima than of my country’s comfortable middle class. As our 1,000-mile road trip went on, though, the people I met and the stories they told convinced me their poverty was more complicated than it appeared: the young people in deindustrialized towns who told us they felt left behind and terrified about their futures, the woman in Arkansas trying to raise six children on $13.40 an hour, the grandmother in eastern Kentucky who told me that I wouldn’t find a single family in her town whose lives hadn’t been touched by addiction — a sentiment I heard again and again as we drove through similar towns in Arkansas and Oklahoma. The Americans I met were financially better off than many of their counterparts in the developing world. But as anyone who has been poor knows, poverty is about much more than money.

Many working-class Americans I met are troubled by addiction, loneliness and contempt to a degree that poor people where I’m from are often spared. The first thing that struck me about poverty I saw in this country was how it was braided together with the drug epidemic. While Latin America overwhelmingly bears the societal costs of drug production — like cartel-based violence and corruption — the United States bears the human costs of drug consumption at a scale not seen anywhere else. In 2023, it had the highest recorded rate of overdose deaths in the world. And those who shoulder the lethal cost of this crisis are, disproportionately, poora working-class Americans. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, I met Drew May, 28, a woman with an easy demeanor. Four generations of women in her family had dealt with teenage pregnancy, addiction, mental illness and sexual violence, she said, and soon those patterns began to replicate in her life. At 5 she was pulling out her own teeth and hurting herself; at 7 she was hospitalized for what doctors thought was a mental health disorder. “I wanted people who cared about me and who listened to me,” she said. “I found that in the drug community.” She told me that she began to smoke crystal meth at 13. In school she had been in the gifted and talented program, but soon she dropped out and left home. At 19, she and her partner began engaging in vandalism. “We felt like we’d been left behind,” she said, and they wanted to express their frustration, even if they weren’t striking out at anyone in particular. “I personally didn’t have any strong beliefs,” she added. “I was in for the chaos.” The second thing that struck me about the poverty I saw in America is that it can be unbelievably lonely. Many of those we met were cut off from extended family and left to fend for themselves. The emotional distance was compounded by the physical: empty miles separate a home from a church, a supermarket or another home, and travel was expensive or laborious. It was a sharp contrast with the density — both geographic and relational — of where I grew up. My life was a node in a thick network of aunts, cousins, cousins twice removed and friends of friends. My parents still talk about the neighbors who tossed them a bag of oats in weeks when they had no food or money in the house. When our institutions failed, our community acted as social insurance — a threadbare substitute for state capacity but a substitute nevertheless. American institutions have more resources than Peru’s, though America’s welfare state is thinner than those of other rich countries, and the current administration is eroding it further. But class solidarity and communal structures can make poverty more endurable, and the Americans who have to live without them end up more isolated and scared than we ever were. America’s stories about itself can breed contempt for the poor. At a Fourth of July party in San Francisco, I mentioned this reporting project to a friend who writes about global development. According to him, it was simple: America’s talent-discovery mechanisms are so efficient, he said, that people remain poor only when it is their own fault. His comment mirrored the suspicion I felt earlier in the

trip. Despite approaching the question from radically different places, my friend and I both were asking, in essence: How real can poverty in America be? His framing was little more than a technocratic retelling of the American promise that anyone can rise here because effort and talent are rewarded. This thinking makes stories like mine — I was poor, and then I came to America, and now I am not — elicit sympathy. It turns the lives of a lucky few into evidence supporting the classic tale of American uplift. Yet while I’ve experienced the success of meritocracy, I’ve also seen firsthand how often meritocracy fails and how easily effort is undone by luck and circumstance — two forces that particularly afflict those who can’t afford second chances. We can come to hold people responsible for what is, in the end, bad luck. In Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Crystal Barnes, a young schoolteacher, painted a grim picture of America at 250. “We’re living in a world that’s taking away resources and forcing people to get desperate. And what happens when too many people get desperate?” she said. “We’ll see.” Most of the people we met felt their desperation only as powerlessness and anxiety. But for some, like May, it curdled into nihilism and resentment. If a country whose views of itself tell its struggling people that their suffering is their own fault, it should not be surprising when some of those people decide they are in for the chaos. And yet when I met May, things seemed to be looking up. She had been sober for more than three years; she was raising her two oldest children again and preparing to see all five of her children in the same room for the first time. She’d graduated from an Oklahoma program called Women in Recovery, a diversion initiative for women with substance abuse disorders. Run by Tulsa’s Family & Children’s Services, it provides roughly two years of intensive treatment (housing, mental health counseling, workforce training) as an alternative to prison. Only about 4% of participants go to prison within three years of graduating from the program. And Women in Recovery costs about $30,000 a year to enroll one woman — less than Oklahoma would have spent imprisoning her for the same period. What struck me most about the program was not so much its top-line numbers as the immeasurable effect it had on women like May, who now drives a truck for Family & Children’s Services Thrift Store. It granted them full personhood, built a community around each of them, paid them the courtesy of believing their problems were real and tried to help address them. Ultimately, a society as rich as America’s should be capable, however imperfectly, of providing families not only with money and consumer goods but also with a glimpse of a path forward. “I had no hope before, and I couldn’t see past my own two feet, and that’s so different today,” she told me about her time in Women in Recovery. So many of those I spoke with are stuck in shrinking towns, in dead-end economies, in politics that look past them. orking on this column involves watching a lot of despair-inducing stories about intractable challenges, from environmental wreckage to technology run amok. But problems always have solutions in the two movies based on Andy Weir novels — “The Martian” (2015) and now “Project Hail Mary.” Like its predecessor, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s film may be set in outer space, but it relies on quaint values like tinkering, perseverance and problem-solving ingenuity, and emphasizes the importance of cooperation. In “Project Hail Mary,” Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) is the only survivor of a last-ditch mission to stop cosmic microorganisms from eating away at the sun’s energy and causing an extinction event on Earth. A gifted biologist who ended up teaching kids before being selected for the one-way journey to outer space, Ryland eventually teams up with an envoy from the equally endangered planet Erid whom he names Rocky. The movie mines their relationship to sometimes cavity-inducing sweetness, but it’s also hard not to be seduced by the odd couple’s chemistry as they attempt to figure out how the heck to defeat the so-called astrophage. In our current moment, a movie about building alliances with aliens to solve

A whole cottage industry has emerged from claims of UFO sightings in the United States; places like Roswell in New Mexico and Area 51 in Nevada are entrenched in pop culture at this point. No matter what one thinks of those phenomena, they have not inspired as many books and movies in other countries. This makes Dominique Filhol’s addition to the flying-saucer canon automatically interesting, especially since it draws on real events that happened six decades ago. This French movie starts off like a Marcel Pagnol-esque paean to life in Provence, with locals drinking pastis at cafe terraces and eating croissants. The idyllic setting is thrown into turmoil when a shaken Maurice (Matthias Van Khache) announces that he has seen a small spaceship in his lavender field, with humanoid creatures ambling about. His wife, Jeanette (Vahina Giocante), is not sure what to make of her husband’s story, and soon little Valensole is the center of a media circus. Some theorize that the strange object was an aircraft from a military operation taking place nearby, but then what to make of the strange marks left in the field? Filhol is clearly sympathetic toward Maurice, who comes across as sincere, and is wrecked by all the attention he must withstand. (Stream it on Hoopla. Rent or buy it on Amazon Prime Video.)

At its best, it focuses on the arguments between Daniel and Michelle, who embody very different worldviews and thus different ways to respond to the new threats. Daniel tells her, “You have such little faith in humanity,” to which she responds, “Not without reason.” I have to say, I think I’m Team Michelle on this one. ‘The Outer Threat’ Daniel (Mark O’Brien) and Michelle (Constance Wu), both astrophysicists, live on an isolated farm, homeschooling their children (Callista Crowe and Isaac Smelcer-Zhang). The property features a small research station set up in an underground bunker, from which Daniel obsessively monitors the skies. Right after he spots an anomaly that suggests the existence of alien life, all hell breaks loose: Communications disappear, and a swarm of menacing drones materializes out of nowhere. The family takes off in their truck and heads toward the one person they feel will understand what’s going on: Michelle’s estranged father (Oscar Hsu), also a scientist. He does reveal a big piece of the puzzle, and it invol-

Heimann plays the two friends’ complicated relationship for comedy, and their interactions with Brian have a surreal flair — which is bound to happen, considering the alien is, er, tentacled. The portrayal of Brian’s hold on his partners lands like a satire of codependency and of gurus who use sexuality to control people while pretending to help them deal with their traumas. “Touch Me” meanders at times, but at least Heimann applies a distinctive aesthetic and sensibility — neon fetishism? — to this close encounter of the kinky kind. ‘Touch Me’ If you’ve ever mused about what Lovecraft as a psychosexual horror rom-com would be like, Addison Heimann’s movie offers the beginning of an answer. “Touch Me” starts with an extended monologue in which Joey (Olivia Taylor Dudley, “The Magicians”) recounts to a therapist her relationship with a tracksuitwearing, human-looking alien named Brian (Lou Taylor Pucci). This is only delayed gratification because we do get to meet Brian, a pansexual being who has his way with Joey and her gay roommate, Craig (Jordan Gavaris,

After “Strawberry Mansion,” which he wrote and directed with Kentucker Audley, Albert Birney confirms his status as one of the most interesting figures in American weird cinema. Here he once again summons a sui generis universe, rooted in the bygone days of analog technology and pixelated aesthetics. Set in 1987, “OBEX” follows Conor (Birney), a Baltimore recluse who creates portraits of people with his Apple computer’s keyboard characters; for viewers of a certain generation, the dot-matrix printer’s sound will act as a veritable Proustian madeleine. For entertainment, he practices a primitive version of karaoke (his take on Gary Numan’s “Cars” is especially good). Conor’s only companion is his dog, Sandy, so his world crumbles when she disappears after he starts playing the mysterious title game. Conor transforms into a fantasy avatar to enter the game’s world, leading to mindmelding adventures where it’s unclear what’s real and what isn’t. Sustained by superb blackand-white cinematography (by Pete Ohs, who wrote the screenplay with Birney) and constantly inventive art direction, this film feels like a Bizarro version of “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” — unsettling under an eccentric exterior. German companies cut US investment to three-year low, data show G erman companies slashed investments in the United States to a three-year low in the first half of 2026,​ as Trump administration policies fed uncertainty between the transatlantic trading partners. First-half direct investments plunged b ‌y nearly twothirds year-on-year to €4.3 ‌billion ($5 billion), the lowest level since 2023, according to calculations by the German Economic Institute, or IW, seen by Reuters. Compared with the same period in 2024,​ that represents a drop of nearly 80%, said the report, which is based on data from Germany’s central bank. “This continues the downward trend that has been evident since the ​ start of Donald Trump’s second term in January 2025,” IW researcher Samina Sultan told Reuters. Since returning to office, Trump has​ threatened most of the United States’ international trading partners with import tariffs in an ​ attempt to secure concessions favourable to Washington. In a bid to avoid heavy duties on its exports to the U.S., for example, the European Union agreed a deal last year that included a $600 billion investment pledge. As Iran war turns into economic battle, new U.S. strategy recalls old ones

resident Donald Trump’s ceasefire with Iran in June envisioned a broader deal to end the war and rein in the country’s nuclear program, all negotiated within 60 days. But that deadline, set to pass on Monday, has been essentially abandoned, and the war has transformed into a contest of willpower and economic endurance that has no end in sight. There have been no publicly reported U.S. strikes on Iranian targets since late July. Yet the effective collapse of the agreement underscores how Trump has struggled to end the war he started in February alongside Israel, and how far he remains from the ambitions of the June deal, including fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway where Iran has choked off oil and gas shipping since the fighting began. Those inside the White House are well aware that they will blow past Monday’s deadline and that the conflict has largely morphed into one of economic warfare, according to two Americans familiar with the negotiations.

The current strategy bears a striking resemblance to previous, yearslong U.S. attempts to isolate Iran in the hopes of compelling it to abandon its nuclear ambitions. The policy had mixed results, and some analysts are skeptical that even severe economic pressure on its own will force Iran to change course. After all, that was the approach Trump attempted in his first term, even though his Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, said last week that he was about to impose financial penalties unlike any seen before. The June memorandum of understanding was widely seen as a boon for Iran, granting the regime badly needed sanctions relief even as talks over tough concessions including nuclear enrichment were postponed for later. But Iranian leaders opted to escalate again rather than consolidate their gains from the deal, according to Nate Swanson, an Iran expert at the Atlantic Council, a Washingtonbased research group. Ships could move through the Strait of Hormuz freely before the war. Iran’s insistence that the deal’s vague language on the issue gave it control over the waterway led to the deal falling apart. Iran began firing on ships that transited in channels outside Iranian

waters, and U.S. forces retaliated by bombing southern Iran, prompting a cycle of attacks and counterattacks across the Middle East. Now, Iran refuses to reopen the strait until the United States follows through on its commitments from the ceasefire, like releasing frozen Iranian assets abroad. The Trump administration wants Iran to first end the blockade, said Ali Vaez, an Iran expert at the International Crisis Group, a research institute. “Neither side is really ready to finalize a deal. They both think that in a matter of days or weeks, the other side will be more desperate for a deal, so they’ll be able to get more out of it,” Vaez said. “This is why we are locked into this game of endurance again.” On Saturday, the United Arab Emirates’ Foreign Ministry slammed Iran for attacking a vessel affiliated with the state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. the previous day. Iranian officials did not comment. Reopening the strait has increasingly become Trump’s main focus in the conflict, even though he initially said the war was meant to empower the Iranian people to overthrow the existing regime, severely degrade its missile capability and stop Tehran from getting a nuclear weapon. There has been little indication that Iran and the United States have extensively discussed the Iranian nuclear program since the ceasefire in June, let alone formulated a deal that could satisfy both sides. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said over the weekend that Iran had yet to decide whether to resume talks with the United States. But the 60-day timeline was no longer relevant, he added, given that the June agreement was essentially defunct. “We did not have a ceasefire that now needs to be extended,” Araghchi said. “We had an end to the war, which has now taken on a new status.” Former U.S. officials who worked on Iran say the prospect of a new nuclear deal between the United States and Iran within 60 days was always remote, although the agreement provided for extensions. A previous, Obama-era agreement took about two years of delicate talks to negotiate; Trump withdrew from that deal, called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, in 2018. The Trump administration hoped that the June agreement would, at the very least, open the Strait of Hormuz. But to get the deal over the line, they relied on vague language that lent credibility to Iran’s claim to dominate fu-

ture shipping in the waterway, analysts said. “It was a flawed document; it was hurried out when it wasn’t ready for primetime,” said Swanson. “And they didn’t resolve the most important short-term issue, which was the strait.” Instead, the United States and Iran now seem to be settling in for an indefinite struggle, neither at all-out war nor in a defined peace. Seeking to force Iran to accept U.S. terms, the Trump administration has brought back sanctions on Iranian oil and reinstated a naval blockade, both of which were temporarily canceled by the agreement. Iran’s strained economy, which prompted mass protests that were brutally crushed early this year, is a major consideration for Iranian decision makers. But Swanson argued that the current stalemate was more likely to push Iran toward escalation than toward conciliation. While there has been little progress on the commitments outlined in the agreement, Trump and his Iranian counterparts have continued to exchange a war of words. During an event in Garden City, New York, on Friday, Trump appeared once again intent on changing the narrative, saying he would soon be “declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States.” It was not clear how serious Trump’s proposal was. But doing so could involve deploying boots on the ground and almost certainly would require a prolonged Navy presence — moves antithetical to the “America First” values of Trump supporters who want an end to prolonged military conflicts overseas. Trump has also been known to toss out half-baked ideas on foreign policy to redirect attention and scrutiny, like when he shocked the world last year by proposing a U.S. takeover of the Gaza Strip, an idea that never materialized. The White House on Saturday did not respond to questions over whether the administration had developed actual plans to take control of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump’s aides also did not respond to questions over the approaching Monday deadline. Iranian officials, in turn, have defied Trump as they push their own demands — including one that they had not made before the war. “Accept reality once and for all. So far, you have suffered major strategic defeats,” Kazem Gharibabadi, the Iranian deputy foreign minister, said on social media. “The Strait of Hormuz has been Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian.”

t least 47 people were killed in eastern Indonesia on Saturday after it was rocked by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake, one of the largest the region had experienced in decades, officials said. The earthquake hit just north of Flores Island, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, about 1,000 miles east of Jakarta, the capital. It caused several buildings to collapse on the island, and was one of the largest temblors to hit the area in more than 30 years, said Wi-

jayanto, the director of earthquake and tsunami affairs at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency in Indonesia. “An earthquake like this occurred in 1992 with a magnitude of 7.5, causing immense damage,” Wijayanto said in a statement. Like many Indonesians, he goes by one name. He added that authorities would continue to monitor for aftershocks. Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency said Saturday evening that at least 47 people had died in the quake and that many others had been injured. Indonesia, an archipelago with about

17,500 islands, is at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, in an area known as the Ring of Fire. The region experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as large blocks of the Earth’s crust collide. More than 2,000 people were killed in 2018 after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami devastated central Indonesia. Authorities initially issued a tsunami warning Saturday, but soon after said the threat had passed. In a news conference Saturday afternoon, Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, the governor of East Nusa Tenggara province, which includes Flores, urged resi-

dents to be cautious about “reports circulating on social media claiming that a massive tsunami or another major earthquake is imminent.” “We ask everyone to help maintain calm and ensure that the information being shared does not cause unnecessary alarm,” he said. The quake struck about 42 miles northwest of Ende, the regional capital, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey. Syrian convicted in Austria of civil war abuses is detained in Syria By CARLOTTA GALL and HUSSAM HAMMOUD

hen a court in Vienna last month convicted two former Syrian officials of abuses during their country’s civil war, the case was celebrated as a groundbreaking pursuit of justice for victims of the fallen Syrian dictatorship. But weeks later, one of those convicted, Musab Abu Rukbah, a former police chief, left Austria and traveled back to Syria after appealing his eight-year sentence. Now the Syrian government has announced it has arrested him. Syria’s Internal Security Forces said on Saturday they had detained Abu Rukbah as part of “ongoing security operations to prosecute those involved in terrorism cases and take the necessary legal action against them.” The arrest came after reports that he had returned to his hometown, Nawa, in the southern province of Daraa. Abu Rukbah, 54, had not been deemed a flight risk by a higher court in Vienna and was free while the appeal process was underway, Christina Salzborn, vice president of the Regional Court of Vienna, said earlier this month. Abu Rukbah had been released without conditions after a brief detention at the time of his indictment in January 2025, and he was not under any reporting requirements, travel ban or obligation to surrender his passport, Salzborn said. But earlier this month, after Syrian activists posted on social media that they had learned of Abu Rukbah’s return, a lawyer representing victims in the case against him

Urdaneta Wittek said this month that Abu Rukbah’s return to Syria was grounds enough for an arrest warrant to be issued, though she also noted that Syria does not have an extradition treaty with Austria. A hearing date for Abu Rukbah’s appeal had not been set. “With his escape to Syria, he is withdrawing from the proceedings before they are final,” Urdaneta Wittek said. His return home is a test for Syria’s government, which is struggling to deliver justice for the hundreds of thousands of victims of the country’s civil war, 18 months after overthrowing the dictatorship of Bashar Assad. Urdaneta Wittek’s application for a warrant, which was seen by The New York Times, said that an investigative group specializing in

international justice cases, Arctic Wind Solutions, had confirmed with the Syrian border authorities that Abu Rukbah had crossed into Syria early on the morning of July 29. Abu Rukbah’s apparent escape was an embarrassment for the Austrian authorities and a blow to his many victims after a 10year investigation of him and a former intelligence official, Khaled Halabi. Asyad Almousa, who was among those who testified against Abu Rukbah in Vienna, said before the announcement of his arrest that a whole new case now had to be built in Syria. “We are starting from zero,” he said, “which means years more of agonizing judicial process.” Abu Rukbah and Halabi had claimed asylum in Austria after arriving in 2015, several years after the start of Syria’s civil war. They were convicted, in a rarity there, under the principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows a country to prosecute individuals for grave crimes committed elsewhere. Twenty Syrian survivors testified against the two former officials during the trial, describing harrowing details of lasting physical and psychological trauma at their hands. Halabi was convicted of torture and other crimes. Abu Rukbah was convicted on charges that included aggravated coercion and sexual coercion. Both men were sentenced to eight years in prison and lodged appeals through their lawyers. “I feel a deep sadness seeing this happen,” said Almousa. “Years of demanding our rights went into the wind because of the Austrian justice system’s carelessness. How was a man sentenced to eight years let go, free and not monitored?”

Benign inflation data offers reprieve to Fed as it weighs rate increase By COLBY SMITH

N

ew inflation data showing a modest easing of price pressures in July has given the Federal Reserve some breathing room as it considers raising interest rates at its policy meeting next month. But the prospect of higher borrowing costs remains firmly on the table as officials begin to lose patience about how long inflation has overshot the central bank’s target. The latest consumer price index report, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday, gave policymakers at the Fed some comfort about retaining that patience, at least for the time being. The Fed’s preferred inflation gauge is the personal consumption expenditures price index, of which the CPI data is a crucial input. Officials pay closest attention to the so-called core measure, which strips out volatile food and energy prices and is thought to be a better measure of underlying inflation. In July, those prices rose 0.2% from the previous month, or 2.5% compared with the same time last year. Officials have suggested that this kind of monthly pace is consistent with inflation eventually retreating to the Fed’s target — something that has been missed for five years. The central bank’s goal is 2%, as measured by the PCE index. As of the latest data in June, it was running at 3.7%. The Fed next votes on rates in mid-September, and a string of benign inflation reports from here on out would help to alleviate pressure on the central bank to take action. The next PCE report will be released Aug. 26. Before Wednesday’s data, a growing cohort of policymakers believed the central bank should have already raised rates to speed up the pace at which inflation falls back to a more palatable level. They did not buy the argument backed by other officials, which centered on the idea that price pressures would ease on their own as tem-

According to Riccardo Trezzi, a former Fed economist who runs the research firm Underlying Inflation, July’s PCE data is at risk of showing slightly hotter consumer price growth than the CPI report. The Fed will also get another round of inflation data before it meets in September. On top of this, it is still unclear whether rates

at the current level of 3.5% and 3.75% are putting any downward pressure on inflation, Trezzi said. “I think the debate between hike or no hike will go on for a month and a half,” he said. “It’s complicated to hold; it’s also complicated to hike, and it’s almost impossible to cut.” What has snarled the Fed’s internal debate is the labor market, which last month showed some signs of having lost momentum even as the unemployment rate ticked down. Veronica Clark, an economist at Citigroup, described the labor market as “not very healthy,” pointing to the fact that people are leaving the labor force and wage growth has been “really weak.” She predicts inflation will continue to decelerate in the latter half of the year, driven primarily by a slowdown in housing-related costs. The Fed’s next steps are under heightened scrutiny after the most recent policy gathering at the end of last month. Officials held rates steady as expected, but Kevin Warsh, the new chair, sent mixed signals about how he expected to make good on his pledge to get inflation down. He did not articulate a clear reason that the Fed opted to hold rates steady in July, nor did he say unequivocally that higher rates were the primary tool to get inflation down. His decision to repeatedly highlight how financial conditions had tightened in the absence of rate increases gave the impression that he was comfortable letting markets do part of the central bank’s policy tightening work for it. Moreover, his passing suggestion that the Fed might consider changing the 2% inflation target at some point stoked further confusion. After the communications mishap, which rattled the U.S. government bond market, the onus is now on Warsh to reset the narrative. His next scheduled opportunity will be at the central bank’s annual conference in Jackson, Wyoming, at the end of the month.

On July 26, Sophie Brocas, the prefect of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, strongly urged tourists not to travel to Gironde — an area about twice the size of Delaware — until the fire had been contained and for tourists already in the area to consider relocating since the situation could deteriorate. A cascade of cancellations struck businesses across the entire region, according to the Union of Trades and Industries in the Hospitality Sector, France’s main hospitality union. ORELOS, Mexico — Puerto Rico’s Men’s National Volleyball Team responded with character and determination against Canada, defeating the Canadians 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 17-25, 25-20) in the semifinals of the XIX Men’s Pan American Cup at the Poliforum 2 of the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos. The victory carried special meaning for the Puerto Rican squad, which was looking to bounce back after losing to Canada during the preliminary round. Puerto Rican attacker Pedro Molina acknowledged that the team entered the match motivated to change the outcome and focused on executing its game plan point by point. “We came in really wanting to beat them,” said Molina, who played an important role in the victory. Ponce Will Host the Next Major Challenge As Puerto Rico celebrates its berth in the

final, the Puerto Rican Volleyball Federation is calling on fans to support the national team at its next major international event: the NORCECA Men’s Final Six, scheduled for August 2329 at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce. The tournament carries added importance as part of Puerto Rico’s path toward the Olympic Games. It will serve as a prelude to the Senior NORCECA Continental Championship, scheduled for September 9-20 in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, a tournament that is part of the Olympic qualification process. The national team arrives at this stage after winning gold at the Final Four and a silver medal at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games, in addition to its recent berth in the Pan American Cup final. The federation is calling on fans to fill the Pachín Vicéns and support the national team in a tournament that will feature six of the continent’s top national teams and represents another important step on Puerto Rico’s Olympic journey.

he Comerío Pescadores del Plata defeated the Yabucoa Azucareros, 5-2, on Saturday at Estadio Yldefonso Solá Morales in Caguas to take a 2-0 lead in the 2026 Puerto Rico Double-A Baseball League Championship Series. With the victory, Comerío moved to within two wins of capturing the second national championship in franchise history

and gained a significant advantage in the title series. Left-hander Luis Leroy Cruz was the star of the game, pitching a complete nineinning game. The standout pitcher struck out 15 batters, did not issue a walk and allowed just five hits. The Pescadores took control in the second inning, scoring four runs. José Ortiz opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly that brought Yadiel Rivera home.

Moments later, Kevin Bermúdez hit a three-run home run to extend Comerío’s lead to 4-0. The Pescadores added another run in the third inning when Pedro Crespo hit a solo home run to make it 5-0. Yabucoa got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Eric Hernández hit a home run to cut the deficit to 5-1. The Azucareros threatened again in the ninth inning, but Cruz maintained his com-

posure and completed the game to secure Comerío’s second victory of the series. Left-hander Noel Pinto suffered the loss after allowing four runs in just 1.2 innings, marking his first defeat of the season. healthy competition. This year, the league was dedicated to Aristarco Tirado Álamo, a distinguished son of Vega Baja, in recognition of his outstanding career and contributions to baseball. Aristarco began playing in our city’s Little Leagues and went on to play professional baseball, reaching the Triple-A level,” the mayor said. Tirado Álamo also played in the organizations of the New York Mets, New York Yan-

kees, Montreal Expos and Baltimore Orioles. “We also recognized his outstanding career as a pitching coach, his work with Major League Baseball organizations and his contributions to the development of young athletes.
