Officials, residents break ground on landslide mitigation projec t in Lajas

With the purpose of preventing the collapse of several residences in the Estancias de Lajas community, Speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez, along with District 21 (Yauco, Guánica, Lajas, Sabana Grande, Maricao and Las Marías) Rep. Omayra Martínez Vázquez and Lajas Mayor Jayson “Jay” Martínez Maldonado broke ground this past weekend on a comprehensive landslide mitigation project.

With an investment of $491,285.75, managed by the House speaker, the construction of a modern gabion retaining structure will now begin.

“When Representative Martínez, together with the mayor, informed us of this problem associated with the landslide in Estancias de Lajas, which puts some residences at risk of losing everything and directly affects numerous families, we decided to act quickly, identifying a budget of almost half a million dollars for the construction of a gabion structure that will provide security to these residents,” Méndez said Saturday during a groundbreaking ceremony attended by about a dozen residents of the community. Gabion structures are flexible, permeable, and durable platforms made of galvanized wire mesh cages filled with stone. They are used in projects related to earth retention, slope stabilization, and erosion control due to their natural drainage capacity and minimal environmental impact.

Estancias de Lajas community will now begin.

The mayor noted that the project “is very important because it will directly help many families who could lose everything if we don’t act with the urgency we are showing.”

Rep. Martínez thanked the legislative leader for not only addressing the problem, but also identifying and allocating the funds to solve it.

“The speaker of the House is a friend of Lajas,” she said.

Key road in Vieques to undergo improvements with $1 million allocation

Vieques Mayor José “Junito” Corcino Acevedo thanked Gov. Jenniffer González Colón, as well as Speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez, for achieving the historic allocation of $1,028,745.64 directed to the rehabilitation of state road PR-200 East in the offshore island municipality.

In a press release, the mayor highlighted that the “reconstruction and reconditioning of PR-200 East, one of the most used filming routes in Vieques, will improve the quality of life of our residents, while at the same time expanding the experience of those who visit us.”

“On behalf of all the residents of Vieques, I want to thank our governor for securing this historic allocation of just over one million dollars for a very important project

in the socioeconomic development of our island municipality,” Corcino thanked both the governor and the House speaker for helping secure the budget allocation, “which will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the lives of all of us who live on the island,” he said.

PR-200 is an important 13.9-kilometers-long road that runs through areas such as Mosquito and Isabel II, among others.

Late last week, the governor announced that she had secured approval for a $94 million allocation from the Puerto Rico Financial Oversight and Management Board for road repairs and rehabilitation across the island, including Vieques. The action paves the way for the Department of Transportation and Public Works, as custodian of the funds, to present collaboration agreements with the participating municipalities.

Puerto Rico Mayors Federation President Gabriel “Gaby” Hernández Rodríguez on Sunday commended Gov. Jenniffer González Colón for securing the allocation of $94 million earmarked for the rehabilitation and repair of roads in more than 44 municipalities.

Furthermore, he pledged to work alongside the central government and the Financial Oversight and Management Board to secure additional funds that would benefit the remaining municipalities left out of the current distribution.

“On behalf of our mayors, I express my gratitude for this allocation of funds, which will allow us to swiftly address the rehabilitation of dozens of roads across the entire island,” Hernández Rodríguez said. “These funds have a direct impact on the lives of thousands of citizens, as they translate into improved infrastructure and greater accessibility, while also contributing to the economic growth of our towns.”

Lawmaker touts gas rewards program in meeting with gov’t, private sector officials

Government officials said a consensus is nearing to create a discount program for gasoline purchases at filling stations on the island, following a summit meeting held late last week in the House of Representatives where the consumer affairs secretary, the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau chairman, and the Bankers Association president discussed the impact of events in the Middle East on the price of fuel.

Also present were personnel from the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, the Treasury Department and the United Retailers Center.

“This platform that we are promoting, once again in communication with all sectors, allows gas stations to offer their customers a discount related to gasoline purchases through a rewards system with customer rebates,” the San Juan District 4 lawmaker added about the proposal he authored. “This type of mechanism has been implemented in states like Virginia and Hawaii with excellent results for consumers. This would be another initiative, along with those implemented by the governor, which have made the price of gasoline in Puerto Rico almost 18 percent lower than the state average in the midst of an emergency situation.”

Parés said meetings with other sectors will continue in the coming days and that they are working “with a sense of urgency.”

Currently, the average price of regular gasoline is $1.049 per liter. Some 90.6% of the gasoline consumed in Puerto Rico is West Texas Intermediate, which is produced in the states of Texas and Oklahoma. On Sunday, the price per barrel was $93.20, a decrease of $1.49 compared to Saturday’s estimated price.

Education Dept. hosts First Autism Teachers’ Gathering as part of Awareness Month

As part of its Autism Awareness Month initiatives, the Department of Education (DE) -- through its Associate Secretariat for Special Education -- held the First Autism Teachers’ Gathering over the weekend.

The event, which took place at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico’s Ponce Campus, served as a professional development and training forum aimed at educators working directly with students on the autism spectrum.

The forum brought together nearly 500 participants, including teachers, facilitators, coordinators and under-

graduate students majoring in autism studies. Attendees benefited from a program focused on practical tools and effective strategies for managing various situations within the school environment. Key topics addressed included crisis prevention and management, as well as the use of visual supports to transform classroom dynamics.

Education Secretary Eliezer Ramos Parés highlighted the importance of such initiatives in continuing to strengthen the capabilities of teaching staff and ensuring the provision of high-quality services to this student population.

“We commend this initiative, which provides our teachers with concrete tools to address the needs of our students with autism with sensitivity, knowledge and ef-

Carnival Corp.’s presence in PR expands with new vessels

The island government announced late last week a significant expansion of Carnival Corporation’s presence in Puerto Rico, marked by the arrival of new vessels at the Port of San Juan.

“The expansion of Carnival Corporation’s operations in Puerto Rico reaffirms the cruise industry’s confidence in our island as a competitive destination within the Caribbean,” Governor Jenniffer González Colón said Friday. “This growth boosts economic activity, strengthens our tourism offerings, and generates opportunities for our local merchants and suppliers.”

Emphasizing the importance of homeporting operations, Tourism Company Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel noted that “this expansion by Carnival Corporation reinforces our growth strategy, maximizing economic benefits for various sectors and consolidating Puerto Rico as a key hub in the region.”

As part of that growth, it was highlighted that in April 2027, the Carnival Firenze will arrive in Puerto Rico for the first time; its visit is projected to have an economic impact of nearly $400,000. Likewise, the Carnival Festivale has two visits scheduled for the Port of San Juan in June 2027, generating an economic impact exceeding $1 million for fiscal year 2027.

Cruises -- a line acquired by parent company Carnival Corp. in 2003 -- will utilize the island’s main port as a departure point for their Caribbean itineraries. The Crown Princess is expected to contribute some $13 million across 14 homeport calls during fiscal year 2027. Meanwhile, the Emerald Princess will be active in fiscal year 2028, making 18 calls and generating $17.2 million for the local economy.

The Seabourn Ovation, meanwhile -- from Carnival’s ultra-luxury brand, Seabourn Cruise Line -- will also be utilizing the island as a homeport. During fiscal year 2027, the vessel is scheduled for one homeport visit and one transit call, representing an injection of nearly $200,000 into public coffers.

US installs a Trump loyalist to lead ‘grand conspiracy’ case into Trump foes

As a sprawling inquiry expands into whether former federal officials committed crimes in investigating President Donald Trump, two unusual factors could ease the way toward securing the indictments he craves.

A former lawyer for Trump’s campaign, Joseph diGenova, has been selected to lead the inquiry after a career prosecutor in Miami was removed from that post last week, a senior law enforcement official said Saturday.

And at least part of the investigation appears to be using a grand jury based in Fort Pierce, Florida, overseen by a federal judge, Aileen M. Cannon, who issued rulings favorable to Trump during the classified documents case against him, the official added. DiGenova is expected to split his time between Miami and Fort Pierce.

Together, the moves show how the Justice Department under Trump’s control has been willing to embrace politically charged tactics and unorthodox personnel decisions in its efforts to satisfy his demands to prosecute his perceived foes — even as other prosecutors loyal to him have encountered forceful pushback from courts against his wide-ranging retribution campaign.

DiGenova, 81, who served as a U.S. attorney in the Reagan era, has been given the title of counselor to the attorney general and detailed to the Southern District of Florida, where the U.S. attorney, Jason A. Reding Quiñones, another Trump loyalist, is supervising the inquiry.

DiGenova’s appointment comes after Maria Medetis Long, a senior career prosecutor in Miami who had been in charge of the investigation, was abruptly removed from the case. Meditis Long, who leads national security investigations for Reding Quiñones’ office, is said to have objected to moving forward with a portion of the inquiry focused on John Brennan, the former CIA director.

The law enforcement official familiar with the matter spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive internal issue.

Because Cannon is the only federal jurist in the Fort Pierce courthouse, she could be in a position to make critical decisions if diGenova uses the grand jury there to subpoena documents or witness testimony and the recipients balk, asking her to quash the demands.

Cannon was criticized by an appeals court in 2022 after she effectively stalled

espionage conviction against Jonathan Pollard, a former U.S. Navy intelligence analyst who passed sensitive information to Israel. He later became a political commentator who gravitated toward Trump during his first term in the White House.

DiGenova has claimed the Russia investigation was a law-enforcement plot to frame Trump and keep him out of the White House during his first presidential campaign. In 2020, as part of the legal team for the Trump campaign, diGenova said that Christopher Krebs, a cybersecurity official who had contradicted false pro-Trump claims of election fraud, should be “shot.” (DiGenova later apologized.)

A special counsel appointed by Attorney General William Barr in Trump’s first term, John Durham, already scrutinized the actions of senior law enforcement and intelligence officials involved in the early stages of the Russia investigation.

the investigation into Trump’s mishandling of classified documents by appointing a socalled special master to sort through reams of materials seized from Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence in Florida. Later, Trump praised her lavishly, calling her “strong” and “brilliant,” after she tossed out the indictment altogether, ruling that Jack Smith, the special counsel who filed the charges, had been improperly appointed.

In another unusual move, Christopher-James DeLorenz, who worked as a law clerk for Cannon during the documents case and later served as an aide to Todd Blanche, the acting attorney general, was sent from the Justice Department’s headquarters in Washington to Reding Quiñones’ office earlier this year and is working on the portion of the inquiry that is focused on Brennan, the official said.

DiGenova will work on the Brennan matter, too, but also the broader inquiry.

Last year, Trump’s allies began pushing for what they referred to as a “grand conspiracy” case that would portray all of the criminal inquiries of Trump as a unified plot to violate his constitutional rights. The conspiracy, by their telling, began with the investigation into Russia and its potential ties to the 2016 Trump campaign, then extended to the classified documents and 2020 election indictments.

That far-fetched theory would allow the Justice Department to scrutinize in a single case matters that would normally be barred by the five-year statute of limitations. It would also give diGenova and Reding Quiñones the authority to scrutinize events that took place in

Washington from their jurisdiction in Florida.

The Justice Department has also given Reding Quiñones special authority under a statute known as Section 515, the official said. That would enable him to bring indictments in jurisdictions where he is not the U.S. attorney.

While many details remain unknown, diGenova is inheriting an inquiry whose most developed portion appears to be focused on trying to find a basis to charge Brennan with lying to Congress over a January 2017 intelligence community assessment. It concluded, among other things, that Russia had interfered in the 2016 election in part because Moscow hoped to improve Trump’s chances of winning.

But Durham, who completed his investigation in 2023, did not find a basis to prosecute any of them, and Barr later said the Durham investigation found that the CIA had “stayed in its lane.”

Takeaways from the Supreme Court’s shadow papers

The New York Times is publishing seven confidential memos that were exchanged among the justices of the Supreme Court over five days in the winter of 2016. They tell a pivotal story.

The memos show how the justices stumbled into a new way of conducting their work in major cases on presidential power, short-circuiting long-standing procedures meant to ensure careful consideration and reasoned opinions.

In the papers, the justices debate taking an unprecedented step: halting a major climate change initiative from President Barack Obama before any lower court had addressed its lawfulness. By a 5-4 vote along partisan lines, the court did just that, without explaining its reasoning.

Emergency orders based on abbreviated briefing and almost no deliberation have now become commonplace, notably in cases arising from challenges to presidential actions. Critics call this new way of doing business the “shadow

Chief Justice John Roberts pushed his colleagues to short-circuit their usual procedures.

Chief Justice John Roberts’ public persona is mild and controlled. In the papers, he is impatient, seems testy with his colleagues and appears offended by what he considers defiance by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Obama and Roberts had a tense relationship. The papers show how keenly the chief justice was tracking the Obama administration’s actions, determined not to be outplayed.

The memos are relatively formal and legalistic. But they are nothing like the court’s usual painstaking work. The justices address one another by their first names, refer to a blog post and a television interview, express irritation and plead for more time.

The conservatives reacted to Obama’s use of power very differently from Donald Trump’s.

In the 2016 papers, two Republicanappointed justices are determined to check Obama, who they believe is overreaching. Justice Samuel Alito warned that if the court failed to stop the president, its own “institutional legitimacy” would be threatened. Now, in the era of President Donald Trump, he and the other conservative justices have often used the shadow docket to empower the president.

The justices do not seem aware of the momentous step they are taking.

The Obama administration’s plan to curb emissions, which was challenged by Republican-led states and industry groups, was set for a slow rollout, culminating in full compliance by 2030. But Roberts said the court had to jump in immediately, as states and businesses would have to start committing time and resources to comply with the plan right away.

The memos debating that weighty question and several related ones spanned just five days. None of the justices mention the threat of climate change, or acknowledge that they are embarking on a questionable new way of operating.

This war has not gone Putin’s way

The Iran war has been an economic windfall for Russia, pushing oil prices sky-high and loosening sanctions.

But if the Russian economy is having a brief respite, the battering of Iran by the United States and Israel marks yet another in a series of recent blows to the great-power role President Vladimir Putin so cherishes.

Iran has been Russia’s closest partner in the Middle East, supplying Moscow with drones for use in Ukraine and a critical route to evade sanctions over its war there. The largescale damage to Iran’s economy and military comes on the heels of the capture of the Kremlin’s South American ally Nicolás Maduro in a U.S. raid on Venezuela in January. Before that, the Kremlin was unable to prevent the fall of another comrade-dictator when Bashar Assad was toppled in Syria (and subsequently fled to Moscow). That left the future of Russia’s military bases in Syria in question.

“And Cuba’s next, by the way, but pretend I didn’t say that,” President Donald Trump playfully said at a meeting of investors at the end of March, threatening another This War Has Not Gone Putin’s Way Russian ally. Cuba is already in dire economic straits with the cutoff of Venezuelan oil and intensified U.S. embargoes, and it was only with U.S. permission that Russia was able to send a tanker of oil to the island late last month. Russia is dispatching a second tanker, but the Trump administration has not said whether it will be allowed to reach Cuba.

Russia, moreover, has been excluded from any say in the future of Iran or its other allies. Instead, Russian oil companies are being squeezed out of post-Maduro Venezuela. In January, U.S. forces showed no compunction about seizing a Russian tanker that purportedly violated sanctions on dealing with Venezuela.

That cavalier treatment must be painful for Putin, who longs to restore his country’s global clout to Soviet levels. Trump’s mysterious affinity for the Russian strongman has been a major card in Putin’s hand, one he has hoped to parlay into Washington’s support for the victory he seeks in Ukraine: the capture of the whole of the Donbas region and the neutralization of Ukraine. Accordingly, Putin has avoided criticizing Trump personally for the fate of his friends.

Yet Putin’s quandary — one that many other global leaders share — is that he has no idea what Trump may take it into his head to do next. Trump’s admiration for Putin has been punctuated by eruptions of pique, such as this one after a Cabinet meeting last year: “I’m not happy with Putin, I can tell you that much right now, because he’s killing a lot of people,” Trump said, while praising Ukrainians as “very brave.”

Putin’s dilemma was on full display at a recent meeting of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. “It seems to me that those who are involved in the conflict can-

not predict anything themselves, but for us it is even more difficult,” Putin said.

Further underscoring the notion that Russia’s gains during the Iran war would not make up for the enormous costs of the invasion of Ukraine, an independent Russian news outlet reported that Putin has asked oligarchs to make voluntary contributions to the budget. It would be the first time Putin has personally asked Russia’s billionaires to prop up government finances drained by the war. The Kremlin denied Putin had made such a request, but acknowledged that one tycoon had pledged a “very large sum of money” to the state.

While Putin has avoided directly criticizing Trump, he has not been entirely silent about his war in Iran. He condemned the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as a “cynical” murder and violation of international law. Intelligence reports suggest that Russia had been assisting Iran with targeting intelligence about U.S. bases, as well as supplying it with upgraded versions of Iran’s own Shahed-136 drone that Moscow now manufactures under license for its war in Ukraine.

Russia has denied those reports, but Wednesday, Russia further challenged the administration more openly when Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, on a visit to China, declared that Iran had an “inalienable” right to enrich uranium, while the United States has demanded in recent negotiations that Iran surrender all of its enriched uranium.

Trump, for his part, largely shrugged off reports of the Russian help with targeting, saying, “If they are, they’re not doing a very good job.” He later acknowledged that Putin “may be helping them a bit, yeah,” but he dismissively added: “He probably thinks we’re helping Ukraine. They do it, and

we do it.” That approach stands in stark contrast with Trump’s growing irritation at NATO allies that have declined his invitation to help clear the blockaded Strait of Hormuz. “So this was a great test, because we don’t need them, but they should have been there,” he said at a meeting with the Irish prime minister March 17. He has since threatened to leave the alliance altogether.

Even with the possible injection of oligarch money into the Ukrainian war effort, and the possibility of fewer U.S. armaments going to Kyiv, the conflict will continue taking a huge toll on Russia. Ukraine has been flying drones deep into Russia to strike oil terminals and has been making new friends around the Gulf by sending military specialists to help defend them against Iranian drone strikes. And after four years, fatigue with the war is deepening in Russia. A recent survey cited by Bloomberg showed that 67% of those polled said Russia should move toward peace talks.

The war, moreover, is draining resources that Russia should be using to keep its technological and industrial development in line with the industrialized world. “Each day the war continues, Russia falls farther behind in the great-power competition that will dominate global geopolitics in the years ahead,” said Thomas Graham, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and the author of “Getting Russia Right,” on the council’s website. “Russia does not need resources to continue the war against Ukraine; it needs incentives to end it.”

The Iran war has weakened those incentives in the short term. But they must remain the same: Give Ukraine what it needs to hold its own until Putin realizes the violence is getting him nowhere.

‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ review: Fresh from the sarcophagus

Mummy movies are usually about meddling with something buried in the past and unleashing ancient forces beyond your control. Similar risks can apply to digging up an old movie premise (albeit minus an Egyptian curse). “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy” revives one of cinema’s most storied monsters with a suitably macabre makeover, but it spins out in the attempt.

You can’t blame Cronin for trying, since his previous feature, “Evil Dead Rise,” successfully riffed off a Sam Raimi lineage of ill-advised demon summoning and gleefully grotesque staging to create a perpetualmotion house of horrors. Taking the mummy for a whirl on the dance floor for new crowds must have appealed to Cronin and his team (and apparently also appealed to Universal, which announced plans to return to its own “Mummy” series that it revived in 1999).

“Lee Cronin’s The Mummy” centers on an American couple living in Egypt whose young daughter, Katie, goes missing and returns to them, eight years later, definitely the worse for wear. The parents, Charlie (Jack Reynor) and Larissa (Laia Costa), welcome her to their homestead in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with their son, Katie’s younger sister, and the children’s grandmother (Ve -

ronica Falcón). Katie (played by Natalie Grace on her return) looks as if she’s been stuck in a sarcophagus, which is exactly where she was discovered in the wreckage of a plane.

Katie arrives in a near-catatonic state, ashen and scarred. But she is soon scampering through crawl spaces at night, spewing foul effluvia, hovering, and cursing and mauling her nearest and once-dearest. Her condition results from a ritual meant to manage an evil spirit across generations (or, less charitably, pass the buck), as the lengthy film’s explanations draw out. Mostly this “Mummy” feels like an elaborate entry in demonic possession horror that gets out of the house

a bit, with the help of a dogged Egyptian detective (May Calamawy, finding her own steady rhythms).

Cronin thrills as ever to luscious gross-out scenes, like a mummy pedicure gone spectacularly awry, some absurd tracheal mayhem, or just a baleful patch of slime under a rug. The movie’s practical effects feature the textured work of Arjen Tuiten, giving Katie a withered and weathered look that evokes artist’s renderings of aged missing children. Too bad about the one-liners that make fun sequences feel generic, the weaker family dynamics compared to “Evil Dead Rise,” and the film’s climax, a hash of close camera setups.

It’s tempting to read more into this hapless American family beyond the film’s circus of frights. They are ensnared in a scourge of violence and terror of a sort they might have thought only afflicted other people. Many horror movies, silly or serious, do have families like that, but the drumbeat of dire news these days can lead one to recognize and identify with characters stuck in an impossible situation. Well-designed ghouls aside, that resonance might be the scariest thing about horror right now.

Trying to explain the strange universe of cryptocurrency

One of the first lessons of economics is that money is made up. Put another way, it’s a construct: Money is only worth what we say it’s worth. That means its value is based on trust. And when that trust evaporates — say, when the price of cryptocurrency collapses — things can go south quickly.

That’s the crux of “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money” (in theaters), a new documentary directed by Ben McKenzie about the strange universe of cryptocurrency. On first glance, McKenzie is perhaps not the most obvious candidate to direct a movie like this: He is probably best known for playing Ryan Atwood, the protagonist of “The O.C.,” and has worked steadily as an actor on TV and film since the show’s finale in 2007.

But McKenzie became interested in crypto through a friend during the pandemic. It seemed like a lot of people were getting very rich very quickly. His interest quickly turned to skepticism, though, especially when he saw dozens of actors and celebrities, including Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson, hawking crypto in ads and interviews. Surely, McKenzie says with exasperation to his wife

(actress Morena Baccarin), they don’t know what they are talking about. Does … anyone?

“Everyone Is Lying to You for Money” is McKenzie’s attempt to explain cryptocurrency by taking viewers on his own investigative journey, mostly in 2022, and he goes to some peculiar places. He heads to El Salvador, the first country to use Bitcoin as legal tender. He goes to Bitcoin conferences, where he has weird conversations and wonders if this whole thing might be kind of a cult. He goes to Florida to talk with a crypto skeptic he met on the internet who insists on disguising his identity on camera. McKenzie testifies before Congress. He even manages to land an interview with Sam Bankman-Fried, the now-disgraced founder of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX — shortly before FTX’s implosion because of fraud.

McKenzie also uses some narration and animation to fill in basic economic details, which means that even if you’re confused or mystified by the whole concept of cryptocurrency, the movie is a pretty solid introduction to how it works. More important, it explains why people got into it in the first place. There’s often a perception that only tech bros and edgelords and Elon Musk fans would be attracted to that world, but as McKenzie demonstrates, lots of people simply seeking a way to

create financial stability for their families were attracted to the promises of the crypto world. He interviews ordinary people who invested money, then lost it.

In one gutting scene, several men talk with him on video about the moment they realized they’d lost their family’s savings and are moved to tears. It’s a reminder that the celebrities who promote the schemes aren’t often hurt — but the ordinary people who believe them are. (Eventually, with journalist Jacob Silverman, McKenzie wrote his 2023 book “Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud,” based on these experiences and economic research.)

True to his background in entertainment, McKenzie uses one more trick to remind us that we can’t always believe what we see with our eyes: At the beginning and end of the movie, he nods to two little filmmaking sleights of hand that turn what we’ve seen upside down. It’s one more way to underline his thesis — every monetary system and financial scheme ultimately rests on a story that the participants tell themselves and trust to be true. And the cryptocurrency story, he argues, is powerful because however we feel about it, we agree on its premise: Our current economic system is broken, and somebody’s got to fix it.

Surging record-high US stocks to wade deeper into earnings season

Investors will look to a heavy week of U.S. corporate results to further fuel a stunning rebound in the U.S. stock market, which has shaken off war-related concerns to reach record peaks.

Hopes for a cooling of U.S.-Iran tensions have led to a sharp rally this month, culminating with major U.S. stock indexes minting fresh records in recent days. The benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX), on Wednesday posted its first record-high close since Jan 27, while the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC), on the same day notched its first all-time-high close since Oct 29.

Investors are turning to a first-quarter earnings season that is expected to be robust, providing a key pillar buttressing bullish sentiment for stocks. Nearly one-fifth of S&P 500 companies are slated to report results in the coming week.

“We’re certainly not out of the woods” from war-related developments that could cause daily market swings, said Chuck Carlson, chief executive officer at Horizon Investment Services. “But I think the market has shifted its attention now ...toward corporate profits and how stocks respond to those profits.”

Oil prices remained at loftier levels. U.S. crude was around $85 a barrel on Friday compared to $67 in late February, just before the U.S.-Israeli military strikes on Iran. Knockon effects of sustainably elevated oil prices including higher inflation and higher Treasury yields could pose problems for stocks, said Michael Mullaney, director of global markets research at Boston Partners.

“The stock market is treating what has happened over the last six weeks as if it has just woken up from a bad dream,” Mullaney said. “Like ... there are no further ramifications or repercussions from this. Which I don’t agree with.”

Historic stock rally back to highs

Following the start of the war, the S&P 500’s slide took the benchmark index down 9% from its January peak. Since its recent low on March 30, the index has stormed back 12%, closing this week above the 7,000 level for the first time.

In looking at S&P 500 pullbacks between 5% to 10% since 1928, Bespoke Investment Group noted that the index had never before rallied back to all-time highs in just 11 trading sessions, as it achieved on Wednesday.

“The velocity of this ascent has been nothing short of astonishing,” Jim Reid, head of macro and thematic research at Deutsche Bank, said in a note.

A number of megacap technology and tech-related stocks, which have led for much of the three-year-old bull market, were hit hard in the initial downturn. Some of those shined in the recent rebound, such as Alphabet (GOOGL.O), and Meta Platforms (META.O), while the massive tech sector (.SPLRCT), also outperformed.

The Nasdaq ended Friday up for a 13th straight session, the first time that has happened since 1992.

“If you are looking for broad participation in the market and you are making new highs and your generals are now coming back to life a little bit, I say that is probably something that is pretty healthy,” said Jeff Weniger, head of equity strategy

Tesla headlines US earnings ahead

Tesla (TSLA.O), reports on Wednesday, the first of the “Magnificent Seven” megacaps to post results for the just-completed quarter. Other companies to report include planemaker Boeing (BA.N), semiconductor company Intel (INTC.O), and consumer products maker Procter & Gamble (PG.N). Heavyweights such as Microsoft (MSFT.O), Alphabet and Meta report the following week.

S&P 500 earnings are expected to jump about 14% in the first quarter from a year earlier, according to LSEG IBES. Major banks kicked off the reporting period this week, posting soaring trading revenues after a volatile first quarter. They noted caution about economic risks even as they said consumers and households were resilient.

has not broken based on early ⁠Q1 bank earnings,” Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise, said in a written commentary.

The path of interest rates will be in focus on Tuesday, when Kevin Warsh, President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Federal Reserve, appears before Congress for a hearing. Trump has seethed at current Fed Chair Jerome Powell for not lowering rates more, but the war’s potential inflationary effects have led markets virtually to rule out rate cuts this year.

More insight into the war’s economic fallout could come with retail sales data for March, out Tuesday. With gas prices hitting $4 a gallon in the wake of the war, investors will be eager to see the impact on consumer spending.

“I suspect these prices aren’t dropping down anytime soon and that is going to have an effect on discretionary spending going forward,” said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth Management. “So the claim that the U.S. economy is in good shape is in my opinion near sighted.”

Iran pushes back after Trump announces new round of talks

Just days before a two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran was set to expire, President Donald Trump and Iranian officials disagreed Sunday over whether top officials would meet this week in Pakistan for a second round of negotiations to end the war.

Hours after Trump said U.S. officials would attend talks in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital, Iranian state media said Iran had not yet agreed to any such meeting. The stakes for such talks, should they happen, are high: Failure would risk reigniting the fighting and global economic upheaval.

A White House official said Vice President JD Vance was expected to lead a U.S. delegation, accompanied by top Trump aides Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The negotiations would be the second meeting of high-level officials since the ceasefire went into effect April 8.

In recent days, Trump had repeatedly said Iran had assented to nearly all of his demands on the country’s nuclear program. Iranian leaders vehemently denied that claim, dampening hopes for an immediate agreement.

Iran declared the strait open to commercial ships Friday, as long as they followed a designated route. But less than a day later Iranian officials said the strait would stay closed in retaliation for Trump’s blockade of Iran’s ports. Even if the strait opened fully, it would take weeks for oil and gas prices to recover.

The conflicting accounts about the state of the negotiations came as the economically vital Strait of Hormuz remained all but closed, a move Trump characterized in a social media post Sunday as a “total violation of our ceasefire.”

Iran said it had effectively closed the strait, a waterway crucial to the transit of global energy supplies, in defiance of one of Trump’s conditions for the temporary truce between the United States, Israel and Iran.

Trump’s announcement of U.S. participation in the talks came with a renewed threat to attack Iran’s civilian

infrastructure if the strait is not reopened and an extension of the ceasefire is not reached.

“We’re offering a very fair and reasonable DEAL,” Trump wrote on social media. “I hope they take it because, if they don’t, the United States is going to knock out every single Power Plant, and every single Bridge, in Iran.”

The head of Hezbollah, Naim Kassem, said this weekend that the group was willing to cooperate with the Lebanese authorities to end the war with Israel and laid out a series of conditions for a lasting truce.

Pope says news outlets misread some of his remarks as criticism of Trump

In a brief but sharp denunciation of how news outlets have covered his Africa trip, Pope Leo XIV told reporters on Saturday that he had no interest in continuing a debate with President Donald Trump and that some of his remarks had been misinterpreted as criticism of the president.

On Monday, at the start of his 11-day trip to four African countries, the pope said he had “no fear” of Trump, responding to an extraordinary presidential broadside against him on social media. But since then, “there’s been a certain narrative that has not been accurate in all of its aspects,” the pope told journalists traveling on the papal plane from Cameroon to Angola on Saturday.

“Because of the political situation created when, on the first day of the trip, the president of the United States made some comments about myself,” Leo said, “much of what has been written since then has been more commentary on commentary trying to interpret what has been said.”

The pope cited a speech he gave on Thursday in Bamen-

da, a city in a region of Cameroon where English-speaking separatists have clashed violently with the Francophone government for a decade.

In those remarks, he said “woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic and political gain, dragging that which is sacred into darkness and filth” — remarks that many in the media, including The New York Times, interpreted as referring not just to the conflict in Cameroon but to the Trump administration.

But Leo said Saturday that speech “was prepared two weeks ago, well before the president ever commented on myself and on the message of peace that I am promoting.”

“It was looked at as if I was trying to debate again the president,” he said, “which is not in my interest at all.”

Before embarking on the trip to Africa, Leo had made remarks that, without naming names, seemed directed at the Trump administration’s policies.

Shortly after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called on the American people to pray “in the name of Jesus Christ” for military victory in Iran, the pope said in a homily that the

Christian message had often been “distorted by a desire for domination, entirely foreign to the way of Jesus Christ.”

But it wasn’t until the president attacked Leo personally on his social media platform, Truth Social, calling him “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy,” that the pope mentioned the Trump administration by name, saying he would continue to “speak loudly of the message of the Gospel.”

The pope reiterated Saturday that his mission during his visits to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea, where he noted there was “unequal distribution of wealth,” was “to celebrate with, to encourage and accompany all of the Catholics throughout Africa.”

During this trip, Leo has broken twice with traditional protocol to speak frankly to journalists on his plane. Typically, popes brief reporters on the return flight.

En route to Luanda, the Angolan capital, Leo took just one question, from a Cameroonian journalist who asked the pope to repeat his message in French. But he replied in English, thanking the people of Cameroon for their “wonderful welcome” and “shared enthusiasm” for their faith.

US officials visited Havana to lay out proposals for Cuban reforms

The Trump administration sent a senior delegation to Cuba this month to discuss a deal to address the humanitarian crisis on the island, marking a new diplomatic effort even as President Donald Trump ramps up pressure on Havana.

A State Department delegation made the recent trip to meet with Cuban officials on the island, according to a senior U.S. official and another person familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity because of the secrecy of the talks. The officials warned in the meeting that Cuba’s government had a small window before the humanitarian crisis on the island deepened, the senior official said.

Cuba has been in an economic free fall ever since the United States cut off oil shipments to the island from Venezuela and Mexico in January.

The group’s visit this month was the first time a U.S. government aircraft had landed in Cuba since March 2016, when President Barack Obama visited to expand diplomatic and trade relations between the nations. The more recent meeting by U.S. officials also served as a signal of Trump’s willingness to seek the compliance of the Cuban government, rather than actively seek regime change.

On Friday, Trump indicated he was keen to shift his focus from the war in Iran to Cuba.

“It’s called a new dawn for Cuba,” Trump said. “We’re going to help them out with Cuba.”

The blockade disrupted daily life in Cuba, causing blackouts, food shortages, canceled classes and resulted in deaths in hospitals and clinics. Trump has indicated he wants to topple the Cuban government, saying he would have the “honor of taking Cuba.”

Last month, the Trump administration appeared to soften its stance by allowing a Russian tanker to deliver about 730,000 barrels of crude oil to the island “for humanitarian reasons,” Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, told reporters.

During the talks this month, the State Department official said, the U.S. delegation insisted that Trump was open to a diplomatic solution to the crisis, but signaled that the United States would not tolerate resistance to its demands.

Axios previously reported on the diplomatic meeting.

The administration has no specific, imminent operations against Cuba under consideration, according to two other U.S. officials.

The U.S. delegation this month proposed bringing Starlink satellite internet to the island and allowing free connectivity. It also urged the Cuban regime to make economic changes to attract foreign capital, grow the private sector and transition to a market-based economy.

A separate meeting in Havana, the official said, had involved a senior State Department official and Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro, the grandson of former Cuban President Raúl Castro, who succeeded his brother Fidel before stepping down in 2018 and still wields considerable influence.

Rodríguez Castro has been speaking with Trump administration officials to negotiate a political and economic transition for the island.

In the meeting this month, the U.S. delegation also raised concerns about foreign intelligence and military groups operating in Cuba with the government’s permission. Russia, China and Cuba have denied the presence of foreign spy bases on the island.

The demands by the U.S. delegation would not represent the regime change pushed by some Cuban American lawmakers and many Cubans on and off the island. They would also fall short of the legal requirements to lift a long-running U.S. trade embargo on Cuba, like legalizing opposition parties, establishing an independent judiciary and holding free elections.

On Thursday, Michael Kozak, a State Department official who oversees diplomacy in the Western Hemisphere, refused to identify during a congressional hearing who in the Trump administration was negotiating with Cuba other than Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, or to whom they were talking.

“We’re engaged with the regime,” Kozak said, to push them to undergo the “drastic reforms they need to take.”

He added that the U.S. government was seeking economic, social and political changes in Cuba, including free elections.

“The goals are very clear,” Kozak said. “What will happen, it remains to be seen.”

Cangrejeras advance to LVSF finals after 4-hour marathon

On Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday morning, the Cangrejeras of Santurce became the first team to secure a spot in the Women’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSF by its initials in Spanish) Finals Series, defeating the Valencianas of Juncos for the fourth-straight time to complete a sweep in Semifinal A.

To advance, Santurce had to dig deep and force a fifth and deciding set in a match that dragged on for four hours due to power failures at the Rafael G. Amalbert Coliseum in Juncos and surrounding areas.

The match was interrupted twice: the first instance occurred during the first set, at 9 p.m., with Santurce leading 18-16. The pause lasted for just over 40 minutes. The second stoppage took place at 11:45 p.m., just before the start of the fifth set, and lasted some 30 minutes.

The Cangrejeras prevailed with set scores of 25-22, 2522, 16-25, 25-27 and 15-12.

at 25-25. Subsequently, a direct ace by Kaleigh Nelson and a Zone 4 spike by Leandra Mangual closed out the set in favor of the Valencianas.

In the fifth set, Santurce elevated their level of play, ex-

ecuted precise passing, and took an early lead, eventually pulling away to a 10-5 advantage following a Zone 4 dink by Helena Grozer.

The victory was sealed at 15-12 with a spike by Andrea Rangel -- also from Zone 4 -- that crashed against the Juncos block. Santurce now awaits the winner of Semifinal B, where the Criollas of Caguas hold a 3-2 series lead over the Leonas of Ponce.

Match 6 of that series was slated for Sunday night in Ponce. A seventh and final match, if necessary, would take place Wednesday night in Caguas.

The Cangrejeras’ offense was led by Rangel (29 points), Grozer (22), and Kara McGhee (11).

Nelson led the way for Juncos with 22 points, followed by Mangual and Haley Bush with 17 points each, and 13 from Marcelle Báez.

In team statistics, Santurce prevailed in attacks (69-60), blocks (13-10), digs (95-79), passes (39-34), and assists (17-11).

Juncos held the edge in service aces (10-4).

The fourth match between the Cangrejeras and Valencianas was scheduled only after a dispute over a player substitution in Match 3 was finally resolved by the league in favor of Santurce, whose five-set win in that April 10 match was upheld.

Waters’ 3-pointer in closing seconds lifts Gigantes over Criollos

The Gigantes of Carolina, Capitanes of Arecibo and Vaqueros of Bayamón were victorious in National Superior National Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) on games Saturday night.

In Canóvanas, the Gigantes prevailed 103-101 over the Criollos of Caguas, with the outcome decided in the final seconds on a three-pointer by Tremont Waters.

The Gigantes set the pace early, closing the first quarter ahead 26-20; however, Caguas went on a 28-10 run in the second period to take control of the game and head into halftime with a 48-36 lead.

The Criollos held the edge after the break, entering the final quarter with a 76-66 advantage. Nevertheless, the Gigantes -- led by Jaylen Nowell -began to chip away at the deficit, setting the stage for a high-tension finish.

With time winding down in the fourth quarter, the Gigantes completed their dramatic comeback and, following

multiple lead changes, the game reached its final seconds with Caguas holding a one-point lead.

With the ball in their hands and the clock winding down, the Gigantes executed a play following a timeout called by their head coach. With just 2.9 seconds remaining, Waters confidently sank a long-range threepointer that put the home team ahead, 103-101.

The Criollos held the final possession but failed to convert.

Nowell led the offensive charge for Carolina (5-3) with 38 points, while Waters contributed 22 points and 7 assists.

Travis Trice had 22 points and 10 assists for the Criollos (6-3), while Louis King added 22 points and 7 rebounds and Moses Brown finished with 21 points.

In Aguada, the Capitanes defeated the host Santeros 95-90 in a hard-fought game that was decided in the final minutes as Arecibo won its fifth straight. With the result, the two teams split the season series, with Arecibo improving to 8-2 and Aguada dropping to 6-3.

The game remained tight from the start, including a 5252 tie at halftime. In the second half, both teams traded the lead multiple times going into the final minutes.

With just over a minute left to play, the Capitanes took back the lead for good and locked down on defense to seal the outcome.

Ramses Meléndez led Arecibo with 20 points and 8 rebounds, while Timothy Soares contributed 18 points.

For the Santeros, Iván Gandía was the top performer with 19 points.

In Bayamón, the Vaqueros defeated the Osos of Manatí 98-91 in a game that began with high intensity before the home team took control in the second half. Bayamón won its third-straight game and improved to 7-4.

The contest kicked off at a frenetic pace, featuring 21 lead changes in the first quarter alone. The Vaqueros finished the first half strong and went into halftime with a 49-40 lead. In the second half, Bayamón imposed its style of play and held on to the lead, securing the victory through superior execution in the final minutes.

Collectively, the Vaqueros dominated the paint with 48 points and received 54 points from their bench. Jaylin Galloway led the way with 25 points off the bench, while Xavier Cooks (14 points) and Stephen Thompson (13 points and 8 assists) contributed on both ends of the court.

Chris Ortiz led the Osos (4-6) with 21 points.
