Gov. Jenniffer González Colón announced on Thursday that she is evaluating several candidates to appoint as the new secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC by its acronym in Spanish) following the resignation of Sebastián Negrón Reichard.
“A resignation occurred here; it was accepted, and we are moving forward,” the governor said in a written statement. “We will soon have a new secretary who will continue our economic agenda and further strengthen the government plan we presented to the people.”
During a meeting with representatives from the private sector, González Colón assured them that the DDEC’s operations are continuing and that the departure of Negrón Reichard -- along with his trust staff -- has not halted ongoing projects.
González Colón expressed her gratitude for the former secretary’s work and did not rule out retaining some of the aides who joined the agency during his tenure.
“Our administration’s economic development agenda remains steadfast,” she said.
Private sector representatives received information regarding the DDEC’s operational continuity and offered recommendations on strategies related to manufacturing reshoring, air cargo and permitting reform.
Among those present were La Fortaleza Chief of Staff Francisco Domenech Fernández, DDEC Deputy Secretary

With music, games and a backpack full of learning, health services organization MMM Multihealth this week launched “Misión Mochilita” (Little Backpack Mission), an educational initiative created to teach children ages 5 to 12 how to prepare for hurricane season with their families.
In its first phase, the campaign will bring participatory experiences to summer camps around Puerto Rico, transforming hurricane preparedness into a fun and educational activity for young children.

The initiative centers around an original song by the iconic children’s group Atención Atención, titled “Tu Mochilita” (Your Little Backpack). It was created to teach, in a fun and memorable way, the basic steps for preparing a backpack in case of a weather emergency.
“We recognize that hurricane season preparedness begins with education and access to clear information,” said Solange de Lahongrais, president of MMM Multihealth. “With ‘Misión Mochilita,’ we want to support communities in Puerto Rico by providing families, especially children, with practical and accessible tools so they can learn early on how to protect themselves, take care of their health, and support their loved
ones in times of emergency.”
Additionally, renowned meteorologist Ada Monzón will join the educational efforts by giving talks at camps, providing specialized and practical information on the importance of being prepared during hurricane season. MMM Multihealth will also collaborate with the Department of Recreation and Sports, the Bureau for Emergency Management and Disaster Administration (NMEAD by its acronym in Spanish), participating municipalities, and Goya of Puerto Rico to broaden the reach of the message to where it is needed most.
The visits to summer camps across the island will include those in San Juan, Canóvanas, Ponce and Mayagüez. During each visit, participants will enjoy musical performances by Atención Atención, educational workshops on hurricane preparedness led by Monzón, and the distribution of emergency kits. Each kit will be equipped with a flashlight, a whistle, children’s activity books, non-perishable food items provided by Goya of Puerto Rico, and an educational guide on hurricane preparedness endorsed by NMEAD.
More information about “Misión Mochilita” can be obtained by visiting MMM Multihealth’s official platforms or its YouTube channel via the following link: https://youtu.be/ T7t5NbQm1BE .

LUMA Energy filed its May 2026 Monthly Collaborative Report with the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) earlier this week, detailing progress on grid stabilization efforts while again warning that it cannot comply with new reporting requirements due to a lack of regulatory guidance.
In its filing, the private operator of the island’s electric power transmission and distribution system submitted updated progress reports from itself, power plant fleet operator Genera PR, and the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), as required under the PREB’s March 28, 2025 Resolution. The report includes updates on vegetation management, transmission line hardening, substation rehabilitation, and the status of utility‑scale battery projects.
But LUMA also reiterated that it remains unable to provide the “targets” the PREB ordered in February for vegetation management, vegetation clearing and transmission line hardening. The company said the PREB has not defined what those targets should be.
“LUMA respectfully submits that … LUMA has been unable to include in the Collaborative Reports the ‘targets’ requested … due to the lack of any definition or guidance from the Energy Bureau on the requested targets,” the company wrote in the report.
LUMA “respectfully reiterates its request to the Energy Bureau to waive this requirement until such time that LUMA is able to obtain the needed clarity … and is able to appropriately implement it,” it added.

LUMA Energy reiterated in its May 2026 report that it remains unable to provide the “targets” the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau ordered for vegetation management, vegetation clearing and transmission line hardening because the regulator has not defined what those targets should be. (Facebook via LUMA Energy PR)
The report notes that vegetation maintenance resumed in December 2025 after a two‑month pause caused by cash‑flow constraints. LUMA reported completing 83 miles of trimming in April, bringing fiscal year (FY) 2026 totals to 1,170 miles. The company also highlighted ongoing corrective work on transmission lines, including insulation and hardware replacements on lines in Barceloneta, San Sebastián, Río Grande and Yauco.
LUMA reported that eight transmission hardening projects have been completed, with 12 more scheduled for completion
by the end of FY 2026. Several projects were removed from the active list after inspections showed no remaining deficiencies. The report details progress on substation rehabilitation projects, including: the energization of the Bayamón TC 115/38 kilovolt (kV) transformer in May, the completion of the Fajardo Pueblo transformer replacement in March, and ongoing work at Sabana Llana, Maunabo and Guánica substations.
LUMA also reported that 89% of new protection settings for 230 kV lines have been implemented, with work continuing on 115 kV and 38 kV systems.
LUMA submitted the monthly update on the 4×25 megawatt (MW) utility‑scale battery projects, which remain stalled because PREPA has not updated the Consolidated Project List required for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reactivation.
The company also noted that procurement and land acquisition activities are frozen until FEMA reactivates the projects.
Genera PR reported that Aguirre Unit 2 is operating at 350 MW, while San Juan Unit 6’s return to service has been delayed to June due to an exciter insulation failure. Palo Seco Unit 4 remains out of service after repeated boiler failures.
Construction continues on multiple battery storage sites, including Cambalache, Vega Baja, Costa Sur, Aguirre and Yabucoa.
PREPA reported completing the operational extension for 17 TM2500 temporary generation units and noted that the Financial Oversight and Management Board conditionally approved contracts for up to 800 MW of additional temporary generation.

The Financial Oversight and Management Board has issued a “conditional approval” for seven executive orders modifying municipal territorial plans, warning the central government that local land use blueprints will remain temporary until a broader overhaul of the island’s permitting system and overarching Land Use Plan is complete.
In a letter sent to Gov. Jenniffer González Colón, the oversight board’s executive director, Robert F. Mujica Jr., emphasized that while the municipal updates can move forward, they will be treated strictly as “interim measures.”
The decision directly impacts local development guidelines for seven municipalities: Cayey, Adjuntas, San Sebastián, Bayamón, Sabana Grande, Quebradillas and Loíza.
The oversight board’s caution stems from multiple moving parts within the central government aimed at fixing the island’s notoriously complex permitting process. The Puerto Rico Planning Board is currently drafting a new joint regulation for permits and has begun updating the islandwide Land Use Plan. Concurrently, the Legislature is considering Senate Bill 1183 and House Bill 1213, which aim to restructure the legal framework governing development.
Because these looming structural updates will dictate how
land and business permits are handled across the entire island, the oversight board ruled that individual town plans cannot be finalized in a vacuum.
“All legislative or regulatory changes resulting from the government’s efforts to update the Land Use Plan and carry out a permits reform are relevant to the territorial plans and should therefore be considered before the territorial plans are approved as final,” Mujica wrote.
Once the broader state level regulations and laws are officially enacted, the seven municipalities will be required to alter their local plans yet again to match the new standards and resubmit them to the oversight board for a final review.
Recognizing that leaving municipal plans in legal limbo could spook investors or freeze local construction, the board explicitly carved out protections for ongoing economic activity. It clarified that the temporary status of the territorial plans will not invalidate any current permits. Any authorizations or building permits granted under the legal framework active at the time of their issuance are officially deemed final. According to the board, this carve out is intended to “ensure the continuity of economic development and to provide certainty for ongoing projects.”
The letter concluded with a firm reminder regarding the hierarchy of power established under the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act, commonly known
as PROMESA. Mujica reminded the governor that under the oversight board’s review policies, the administration is expected to submit proposed executive orders to the board prior to their public issuance, rather than after the fact.
The board noted that it reserves the right to modify its stance or refer findings to relevant authorities should new information come to light regarding the municipal land revisions.

The dream of homeownership is slipping further out of reach for the average Puerto Rican family.
Over the past six years, housing affordability on the island has deteriorated significantly, driven by a perfect storm of skyrocketing property values, stubborn mortgage rates and stagnant household incomes.
According to the latest Housing Affordability Index compiled by economic consulting firm Estudios Técnicos Inc. (ETI), the index closed the fourth quarter of 2025 at just 64%. While this represents a slight uptick from the 58% recorded in the third quarter of 2025, it sits drastically below the 99% threshold recorded in early 2019.
The index measures whether a family earning a median income can qualify for a mortgage on an average-priced home with a 20% down payment. A value of 100% means a family has exactly enough income to qualify; anything

Over the past six years, housing affordability on the island has deteriorated significantly, driven by a perfect storm of skyrocketing property values, stubborn mortgage rates and stagnant household incomes.
below that signifies severe financial barriers.
“The deterioration in housing affordability reflects the convergence of three forces: rising property prices, high mortgage rates, and insufficient growth in household income,” said economist Leslie Adames, director of the Economic Analysis and Policy Division at ETI.
“This combination has progressively widened the gap between what a family with a median
income has available to qualify for a mortgage and the prevailing market conditions.”
The math paints a stark picture for local families. With respect to new homes, the average price surged to $421,191 in 2025, a 7.1% increase from 2024. To qualify for this purchase, a household needs an annual income of $105,297. In the case of existing homes, the average price rose 4% to $223,155.
Puerto Rico’s current median household income stands at just $34,730 -- leaving a massive deficit for anyone attempting to enter the market.
While a brief dip in 30-year fixed mortgage rates -- dropping from 6.96% in January 2025 to 6.19% in December 2025 -- offered temporary relief and bumped the index up to 64%, that relief was short-lived. Recent data from May 2026 shows that interest rates have already bounced back up to 6.51%, driven by a steepening federal Treasury yield curve.
Despite the fact that local families are being priced out, Puerto Rico’s real estate trans-
action volume has shown surprising resilience. After bottoming out at 2,231 units sold in the first quarter of 2024, sales recovered moderately throughout 2025, closing the fourth quarter with 2,645 units sold.
This paradox points to what Adames calls a “bifurcation” of the island’s housing market.
“Demand is being sustained primarily by buyer segments less sensitive to the cost of financing -- including cash buyers and investors -- while affordability constraints continue to exclude a growing proportion of the working and middle-class population,” Adames said.
The outlook for the remainder of 2026 offers little comfort. Economists warn that housing affordability will face continued downward pressure if mortgage rates remain elevated.
Furthermore, external global pressures -- specifically inflation driven by rising energy prices linked to ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East -- threaten to squeeze household budgets even further, shrinking the pool of potential local homebuyers to historic lows.

Agriculture Secretary Irving Rodríguez
Torres announced on Thursday the launch of a distribution program for tissue-cultured seedlings for plantains and bananas, backed by an initial investment of over $400,000.
“The development of high-quality seedlings was one of the priorities we established from the very beginning of our tenure in December, because we recognize the threat that Fusarium poses to the plantain and banana industry throughout the region,” Rodríguez
Torres said in a written statement.
The first delivery took place on Tuesday at the Juana Díaz Agricultural Experiment Station, where 40,000 seedlings were distributed.
The Agriculture Department projects that it will distribute nearly 215,000 disease-resistant seedlings among farmers across six agricultural regions of Puerto Rico.
Rodríguez Torres noted that Fusarium is not currently present in Puerto Rico; however, he said, the agency has activated a preventive plan in response to warnings regarding the potential arrival of the disease in the Caribbean.
“Puerto Rico does not yet have a pres-
ence of this pest, but we are not going to wait for it to arrive before taking action,” he said. “We are implementing an aggressive and responsible preventive plan to protect our farmers and ensure the continuity of these crops, which are essential to our food supply and our economy.”
The plantain seedling program is expected to impact up to 50 farmers, with deliveries ranging from 2,500 to 5,000 seedlings per producer. Regarding bananas, the program will initially benefit 20 farmers, providing 90,000 seedlings to cover nearly 97 acres (100 cuerdas) of cultivated land.

Agriculture Secretary Irving Rodríguez Torres said the agency he leads is “implementing an aggressive and responsible preventive plan to protect our farmers and ensure the continuity of these crops, which are essential to our food supply and our economy.”

With the goal of addressing the most pressing challenges in governance and controls in the island’s institutions, the Certified Public Accountants Association (CCPA by its initials in Spanish) will hold a forum titled “Internal Audit: Leading in Times of Risk -- Governance, Control, Trust and Public
Projection” on Thursday, June 4 from 8:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan.
The forum has been designed as a space for dialogue to transcend traditional auditing. The agenda will feature leaders from the public and private sectors, banking executives, insurance company representatives and cybersecurity experts.
“In an environment marked by economic and fiscal uncertainty, internal auditing must evolve from a reactive to a preventive approach,” CCPA President David Rodríguez said. “This event seeks to position the auditor as a strategic partner who brings real value to organizations through the use of tools such as data analysis and the strengthening of internal controls to ensure institutional stability and
financial sustainability.”
Key topics to be discussed include integrity in public administration, exposure to cyber threats, regulatory challenges in supervised industries, and risks in government procurement processes. Emphasis will also be placed on the importance of effective governance, robust controls and strategic communication to maintain public trust during times of crisis.

Nine workers at a paper mill in southern Washington state remained missing and two were dead earlier this week in what Gov. Bob Ferguson warned would likely be the worst industrial disaster in the state’s modern history.
The explosion of a tank at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging plant in Longview, Washington, near the Oregon border, released more than a half million gallons of highly caustic chemicals, Longview fire officials said. An unknown amount ended up in the Columbia River, and a dozen dead carp were recovered from nearby dikes.
U.S. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash., said rescue workers had seen “unthinkable horrors” and demanded accountability once the investigation into the explosion is completed.

Friends and family members have identified one of the dead as Gilbert Bernal, a worker at the plant. Although it was unclear exactly where the missing might be, officials said they did not believe anyone was still alive inside the facility and that they were in a recovery phase, rather than rescue, working “to return all of the workers to their families.”
Bernal, a father of two and a grandfather of one, worked as an electrician at the plant for about 15 years, his friend Todd Cornwell said Wednesday. The pair met at their church, where Bernal and his wife were active.
Bernal showed up almost weekly to Bible studies, always with examples of how the passages related to his life. He used his skills as an electrician to help with fixing the church’s lights and sound system.
“Knowing how he was, he was ready to meet Jesus at any point in time,” Cornwell said.
Bernal’s son also worked at the plant, Cornwell said, and identified his father’s body.
“There are not enough words to express on how devastated we are right now,” Bernal’s daughter, Geovana Bernal, said in a statement posted on social media. “My father was the most selfless man I knew.”
Recovery efforts have been complicated by the largescale release of chemicals at the plant, about 45 minutes north of Portland, Oregon. The plant makes wood pulp and paper board for packaging and cartons.
The Longview Fire Department said the 900,000-gallon-capacity chemical tank exploded just after 7 a.m. Tuesday during a normal early morning shift change. Seven employees caught in the blast remain hospitalized. A firefighter was also injured but has been released from the hospital, said Chief Matt Amos of the Longview Battalion.
Officials initially believed about 90,000 gallons of
materials remained inside the tank, but an inspection revealed a significantly smaller volume, about 25,000 gallons. This allowed emergency responders to move forward with removing the materials on Wednesday, though fire crews reported chemical damage to the boots teams wore in the initial response.
As bodies are recovered in a “slow, methodical and deliberate” search, they will undergo decontamination before being taken to the Cowlitz County Coroner for identification and family notification, the department said. It is not clear how long the search for remains will take. On Tuesday and Wednesday, family members of workers appeared at the plant looking for more information, but little was provided. Brian Wood, a company executive, said the business was “focused on helping responders find and recover our people.”
Wood said the company would cooperate with investigators “to the maximum.”
Longview is a mill town that has been buffeted by changes and challenges in American manufacturing in recent years. Gluesenkamp Perez said the disaster only adds to fears among many in Cowlitz County that mill jobs may go away entirely. She said the loss of life will affect everyone in the region and noted that there were “a lot of young families” among the plant’s 550 employees.
Rescuers said that Tuesday had appeared to have been a normal day at the plant, a campus of large chemical tanks and processing buildings, with no unusual activity around the tank.
After the explosion, the cylindrical tank that failed had collapsed on one side, its walls folding in under the
weight of the structure.
Scott Goldstein, the Cowlitz County fire chief, said investigators do not yet know the level of contamination in the Columbia River, which winds its way from Longview out to the Pacific Ocean. He said initial testing showed no sign of contamination in the air.
On Wednesday morning, tanker trucks rolled in and out of the plant’s parking lot, along with fire and rescue trucks and a vehicle with the Environmental Protection Agency.
Local officials said there was no direct risk to the surrounding community or its water supply, but they urged residents to avoid the area or nearby ditches that might contain the chemical.
Eight employees and one firefighter were initially taken to hospitals, some with severe injuries, officials said. One of those workers has since died. Meantime, the community awaits word of loved ones.
Tyler Covington, 29, one of the missing, had worked at the plant for less than a year, according to his romantic partner, Mackenzie Specht.
“He was a great man and he was my best friend,” Specht said.
The couple has been together for the past five years, raising three children together. Covington could be quiet and funny, she said. Baseball was his favorite sport. He also liked boating.
The chemical that was released is known as “white liquor,” a solution mainly of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide that helps break down wood chips into pulp. It can cause second- or third-degree burns on contact with skin and can be dangerous if inhaled, Amos said Tuesday.
The cause of the explosion was not known on Wednesday. But the plant has received fines for running afoul of environmental regulations, and twice in the last three months, employees or their union representative filed complaints over safety concerns to the state’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
The plant has been the site of other industrial fires in recent years and has also had wastewater and chemical spills, according to local news reports.

The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll, the 82-yearold former magazine writer who accused President Donald Trump of sexual assault, according to two people with direct knowledge of the situation.
The investigation centers on whether Carroll committed perjury in lawsuits against Trump, according to the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. Carroll won a $5 million civil judgment against Trump that he had sexually abused and defamed her, which the president in November asked the Supreme Court to overturn. She also won a $83 million civil judgment against him in another defamation case.
An inquiry into Carroll would represent the latest chapter in Trump’s retribution campaign, which has been carried out by Justice Department officials. A number of figures who brought criminal and civil cases against Trump have come under the department’s scrutiny, including former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James and other adversaries of the president.

In May 2023, a federal jury in New York found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in the mid-1990s. The jury also found that Trump had defamed her by saying on his social media site that her case was a hoax and a lie.
Carroll was awarded $5 million by the jury, a verdict upheld on appeal in December 2024, a month before Trump was sworn in for his second term, when a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously rejected his request for a new trial. The panel said Trump had “not demonstrated that the district court erred in any of the challenged rulings.”
Trump won a delay this month in another defamation case in which Carroll was awarded $83.3 million in January 2024 after another trial in Manhattan.
(Dave Sanders/The New York Times)
Andrew Boutros, the Trump-appointed U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, opened the inquiry into Carroll, according to the person with knowledge of the situation. The investigation was reported earlier by CNN. Carroll’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Todd Blanche, the acting attorney general, is said to have recused himself from the probe because of his prior representation of Trump, although officials from department headquarters have been involved in the inquiry.
The investigation comes at a volatile moment in a Justice
Department that appears to be increasingly controlled by Trump, who has faced little pushback from department leadership as he accelerates his campaign of retribution against those who accused, challenged or defied him in the past.
Blanche has aggressively pursued investigations against people Trump has targeted. Last month, the department charged Comey over a social media post of seashells arranged in the numbers “86 47,” which prosecutors said was a threat against Trump. Comey has said he did not associate the phrase with violence and denied wrongdoing.

Trump’s revenge campaign kicked into high gear in September when he publicly demanded that then-Attorney General Pam Bondi move to prosecute several of his adversaries. Within several weeks, a newly selected prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia had indicted Comey and James. But both of those cases were thrown out by a judge, and, despite the newer indictment of Comey last month, the department has struggled to gain traction in a number of cases against Trump’s adversaries.
Carroll’s accusations are among the most severe leveled against the president, and he has long sought to demean and discredit her.
In one area of contention before the first trial, Trump’s lawyers wrote to the judge, accusing Carroll of concealing financial support her case received from Reid Hoffman, the billionaire co-founder of LinkedIn and a strong critic of Trump’s.
The lawyers said the eventual disclosure of the funding raised “significant questions” about Carroll’s credibility. Her lawyers, in their own letter to the court, argued that Hoffman’s financial support was irrelevant to Carroll’s legal claims and that she had nothing to do with obtaining the outside funding.
A spokesperson for Hoffman did not respond Wednesday night to a request for comment.
The verdict included $65 million in punitive damages after the jury found that Trump had acted with malice in defaming Carroll. Her lawyers argued to the jury that a large verdict was necessary to stop Trump from continuing his attacks on her, which he made at news conferences, in social media posts and during the trial itself.
Trump, who did not testify against Carroll at the first trial, took the stand briefly in the second. The $83.3 million verdict was also upheld by the 2nd Circuit in a unanimous three-judge ruling.
The appeals panel said Trump “never wavered or relented in his public attacks” on Carroll, and that she was subjected to public harassment as a result of his statements, including death threats and threats of physical injury.
The court ruled that Trump did not have to pay the judgment, as he intends to appeal to the Supreme Court.
It was not immediately clear why the investigation of Carroll was being conducted by Boutros, who is based in Chicago, although a nonprofit associated with Hoffman is there.
The Justice Department’s leadership has made extensive use of a provision that allows the designation of cases to handpicked prosecutors across the country, regardless of whether possible crimes occurred in their jurisdictions.
The department assigned its investigation into John Brennan, the former CIA director, to the U.S. attorney in Miami, Jason Reding Quiñones, because he was seen as more willing to pursue a case viewed as questionable by other offices, according to former officials.
The conduct of prosecutors under Boutros’ supervision has come under serious criticism in recent days.
Last Thursday, he announced that misdemeanor charges against people who had protested outside an immigration detention facility near Chicago last year would be dismissed.
In a hearing in downtown Chicago, Boutros said that potential misconduct by prosecutors during the grand jury process had led to the dismissal.
Defense lawyers said that prosecutors working under Boutros held conversations with individual grand jurors outside the courtroom about the case, a breach of rules.

It isn’t hard to see the case for striking a deal with Iran, one that will turn the current shaky ceasefire into a long-term truce.
The global economy needs an end to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz lest energy prices rise even higher. The military option for trying to force the strait open is timeconsuming and risky. Iran could retaliate by striking important energy and desalination infrastructure in neighboring states, causing an environmental catastrophe. Negotiation is the only plausible way to get Iran to relinquish its stock of highly enriched uranium, most of which is believed to be buried deep within the nuclear complex in Isfahan. The United States is running low on critical munitions, particularly missile interceptors, which are needed to protect U.S. assets and maintain deterrence against other threats worldwide.
And President Donald Trump promised voters a relatively brief “excursion” in Iran, not another forever war in the Middle East. For him to break that pledge now would also mean breaking faith with millions of MAGA voters who long ago grew tired of presidents who seemed to care more about policing the far-flung corners of the world than about taking care of America itself.
Powerful arguments. But they must be weighed against the risks, three in particular.
First, an agreement that allows the regime to emerge from the war as the perceived victor instantly magnifies our overall geopolitical risks.
China will take note not only of our munitions shortage (which it could have learned of before the current war simply by reading The New York Times) but also of the fact that the president lost his appetite for war after just 39 days and 13 military fatalities. U.S. allies in the region will take similar note: Why would the Saudis or Pakistanis want to incur the domestic risks of recognizing Israel by joining the Abraham Accords, as Trump is now imploring them to do, if Israel and the United States look like the weak horses against Iran in the struggle for regional hegemony?
Worse: Iran’s new-generation leaders will draw the lesson that closing the Strait of Hormuz is a card they can play at will, knowing they have a greater tolerance than their adversaries for the pain it might impose. That means they’ll use it or threaten it to extract an ever-increasing list of economic and strategic demands. A deal to end the current blockade is merely an enticement for the next blockade and the one after that.
Second, the adage, familiar to this administration, that the Iranian regime has never won a war or lost a negotiation happens to be true. That’s not just because the regime has a genius for bargaining, though it does. It has an equal genius for bending and breaking rules and agreements whenever it suits its needs.
That was true with the much-vaunted Iran nuclear deal, or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, some of whose terms — such as Iran’s obligation to be open about its past nuclearweapons work — the regime was violating long before Trump pulled the United States out of it in his first term. It was true of Iran’s obligations as a signatory to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, whose terms Iran was also violating through what the International Atomic Energy Agency described last year as an “insistence on a unique and unilateral approach to its legally binding obligation.”
Why should anyone expect Iran to act any differently now? The risk of a resumption of the war might be an inducement for the regime to negotiate in something like good faith. Yet Trump has already threatened to restart high-intensity fighting on at least seven different occasions since the current ceasefire began — and backed down every time. The closer we get to the midterms, the more political incentive Trump has to avoid conflict.
The Iranians know this, which is why they’ll play for time with a carefully balanced set of tantalizing promises and extraneous demands, whether about Hezbollah or the financial payoffs they’ll insist upon in exchange for easily reversible concessions. Moving along this road guarantees that Trump will find himself agreeing to the same kinds of terms he once denounced when they were made by Barack Obama or Joe Biden.
Finally, Trump will get no political relief in the midterms if his signature presidential act for 2026 is a failed war. Not many like paying more for gas, but many are also willing to swallow the cost for a worthy objective — such as removing a potent and rising menace to America’s security and our vital interests. But economic pain in pursuit of strategic futility is an unforgivable political blunder. Trump is on the cusp of it now.
So what should the administration do? Heed the words of Robert Frost: “The best way out is always through.”
Although it’s easy to miss, given the information blackout that (at least until this week) Iran imposed by shutting down the internet, the regime itself hangs by slender threads: a worthless currency, a mostly bankrupt state, a badly wounded military, all-but-undefended airspace, and a leadership whose final claim to legitimacy is that it has stood up to the Great and Little Satans and, so far, survived.
Trump can still deny them that claim. The United States struck some targets in Iran on Monday. Now Trump can announce that we will destroy a facility of military significance to the regime pending a material Iranian concession, and make good on the threat. The next day, two targets, and so on. If Iran opts to retaliate against our Gulf allies, then it’s past time they start behaving like cooperative allies, by either joining the fight or at least not obstructing it.
Trump need not be defeated in this war, but he’s close. Should he lose it, what remains of his presidency will go down with it.

President Donald Trump gestures near an American flag after speaking at a rally in Suffern, N.Y., May 22, 2026. “The global economy needs an end to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz lest energy prices rise even higher,” writes The New York Times columnist Bret Stephens.

Just when everyone is packing up for the summer, musicians are working themselves into a frenzy of creativity and exuberance.
Take Matthew, a 17-year-old Maryland high-schooler of Chinese ancestry.
The youngest of 25 students enrolled in British keyboard genius Ian Hobson’s 12th International Piano Festival at the Puerto Rico Steinway Society headquarters in Jan D’Esopo’s Gallery Inn this week. Last Monday, the newly arrived students were testing all six Steinway concert grands in the historic 18th-century barracks in Old San Juan.
But the one who didn’t hide his talent was this shy teenager who kept re-incarnating Liszt and Chopin and Beethoven in the most ecstatic colors all evening while young tourists kept ordering up mojitos and gin & tonics and chicken wings in the Music Hall.
When we called on AI to identify an especially difficult piece, our helpful robotic ear told us quickly that it was a particularly difficult etude (aren’t they all?) by Franz Liszt, being interpreted by Argentinian virtuoso Martha Argerich, considered the world’s greatest living pianist! Matthew’s reaction? A subdued “I’m flattered.”
Argerich could not be reached for comment.
For information on free concerts, which start at 5:30 p.m. through week’s end, call (787) 722-1808.
One in 60
Another musician getting chills this past week on a rare instrument was Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra (PRSO) principal cellist Luis Miguel Rojas, after taking in the brilliant cello and piano homage to the world’s most famous cellist, Pablo Casals, in the hands of Emanuel Graf.
L’Eveque de la Rochelle (which means Bishop of Rochelle) was crafted in Cremona, Italy in 1690 by luthier Antonio Stradivarius, one of only 60 existing cellos made by the undisputed master (there are considerably more extant violins made by his gold-touch hands).
The instrument, one of only four made of strong, dark tiger wood, can sell for anywhere from $5 million to $10 million. But Graf was lucky he didn’t have to mortgage
his soul to buy it; he has had it on indefinite loan since 2022.
Graf, an avid racing car fan, had the instrument’s case finished in the startling red color (rosso corsa) of Italy’s racing cars. He has been a special guest of Ferrari and combined his two loves in one concert.
While it seemed security was very tight, two elite musicians -- Puerto Rican guitarist Arturo Castro and Rojas -- and this determined reporter managed to get in.
Rojas was almost speechless after he was allowed to play a little bit, but he did manage to say: “A blend of powerful sound and elegance. A wonderful experience.”
The fondest of farewells
One of the most poignant scenes on the first night of the Casals Festival was not even in the concert hall but among a gang of PRSO members after the concert. The hangout on Martin Travieso Street, once known as Diana’s Pizzeria, is now Callejeros, under new management with an emphasis on Mexican cuisine and with A/C. But the gang still calls it “La Pizzeria sin aire” from the old days. Former concertmaster Henry Hutchinson and his wife Mari, bassoonist Pedro Vázquez and violist María Santiago, among others, raised a heartfelt toast along with a solemn group of friends of Ion “Nelu” Serbanescu, the PRSO second principal bassoonist who died just before the festival opened.
His sister Elena Sherbanesco, a retired

PRSO first violinist, gave a moving toast, initially in Spanish, then at this columnist’s urging, in Rumanian. The fallen musician was cremated in his tuxedo after the release Monday of the many honors and emotions his colleagues and siblings had been bottling up all week during intense preparation for the iconic festival. While the festival always evokes the monstrous talent of Pau Casals, for whom it is named, the 70th edition was dedicated to a departed bassoonist.
PRSO Music Director Max Valdés read an elegy while a bassoon remained alone on stage as Emeritus Conductor Roselín Pabón and Hutchinson stood as honor guards.
For your many breaths of love and creation over two decades.
Buen viaje, Nelu.
Featuring in ‘Trojan Women’
Natalia Santaliz, a beautiful young arts correspondent for CBS from Mayagüez, is the gal on the go these days. Sporting an incredibly individual shoulder-length hairdo, she also wore with grace the most exquisite jade green and ecru gown this observer has ever seen in a requiem (in this case, Mozart’s “Requiem in C Minor”).
Natalia, with all the elements, is a gal on the go. She made her first appearance at the Met in 2024 at the Met in the female chorus in Osvaldo Goloijov’s “Ainadamar” and will be featured in a unique role in the dramatized and musicalized updated version of Euripides’ Greek tragedy “The Trojan Women.”
This timeless piece of literature highlights the brutal treatment of women in war and their brave resistance. It has its
greatest relevance today in Ukraine and Syria and Gaza and the many other sites of horror and brutality, says creator and director Vicente Castro. Look for mega stars like Jorge Luis Ramos as Hecuba, former queen of Troy and veteran theater icon Jacqueline Duprey as her successor Helen of you know where, and Braulio Castro as Menelaus.
Sultry triple threat Ana Isabelle is Cassandra, while talented character actor Willie Denton renders Taltubius. Brilliant young actress Daniella Paredes interprets Andromache.
The music is eclectic, with classical guitarist Alberto Rodríguez Ortiz doing the heavy lifting along with veterans such as Rucco Gandía on electric bass with lots of drums. All this with music from the best of Spanish and Spanish American composers such as Manuel de Falla and Argentinian Alberto Ginastera.
“Cassandra’s Rap” is written by Vicente Castro to music by the versatile Rodríguez Ortiz.
Mérido González Marte, known as “Yiyo,” will bring his special talents in bomba and plena to the Greek stage.
The Caguas Children’s Choir and other singing groups directed by Meredith Alequín will provide the soldiers and women.
Veteran Quique Benet is on lights, surrounded by many new technicians.
Boston payback
Remember when the PRSO trekked to Boston to show those staid pilgrims up there what we can do in a Caribbean orchestra inspired by the great Catalan cellist? Yeah, Casals.
Well, now they’re sending 10 of their own, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, to show us what they can do. As part of the Casals Festival, they will be giving a concert Sunday at Bellas Artes Symphony Hall at 4 p.m.
They’ll be playing “Summer Music” by Samuel Barber, for woodwind quintet, Antonio Dvorak’s “String Quintet in G Major” and Carlos Simon’s “Gardner Suite” for just about everybody.
Simon was composer in residence at the Boston Symphony.
Happy listening wherever you are.
The big free clarinet concert with Spaniard Ángel Martín is on Monday at 5 p.m. at the Conservatory of Music in Miramar, and the big debut of Boriken (String) Quartet is on Tuesday at 7 p.m., also at the Conservatory, but not free.
The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq extended gains on Thursday, briefly hitting intraday record highs, after news reports said the U.S. and Iran had reached a deal, while investors also digested key inflation data.
The news was first reported by Axios, which said that negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program would be held during the 60-day truce period, but that the plan still needed the approval of President Donald Trump.
“Traders are on a hair trigger with the back-and-forth on deal news, and have been leaning long to avoid getting trampled by a better-than-expected outcome. The harder part is that the inflationary forces may not abate as fast as markets want,” said Jamie Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group.
Economic data showed U.S. inflation increased at its fastest pace in three years in April, driven by higher energy prices amid the Iran war.
Meanwhile, U.S. GDP for the first quarter was revised lower to a 1.6% annualized increase, with momentum expected to slow this quarter.
At 2:04 p.m. EDT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI), fell 19.74 points, or 0.04%, to 50,625.05, the S&P 500 (.SPX), gained 45.63 points, or 0.61%, to 7,565.99 and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC), gained 250.65 points, or 0.94%, to 26,925.38.
The S&P 500 healthcare index (.SPXHC), gained 1.3%. Eli Lilly (LLY.N), dvanced 3.9% after CVS Health (CVS.N), said it would restore the drugmaker’s weight-loss injection, Zepbound, to its coverage and add its newly approved obesity pill Foundayo.
Tech shares (.SPLRCT), also moved almost 1.6% higher. Microsoft (MSFT.O), gained 3.8% after news website the Information reported the company would release a new coding model next week.
Marvell Technology (MRVL.O), rose 3.6% after UBS raised its target price to $230 from $195.
The company’s shares have more than doubled so far this year.
Snowflake (SNOW.N), soared 38% after the data analytics firm lifted its annual product revenue forecast and announced a five-year AI infrastructure deal worth $6 billion with Amazon Web Services (AMZN.O).

Peers Datadog (DDOG.O), and MongoDB (MDB.O), opens new tab rose 3.5% and 11.7%, respectively.
Five of the 11 main S&P 500 sectors were in the green.
Renewed confidence in AI and earnings growth momentum have underscored the recent rally despite the Middle East tensions, which have increased inflationary expectations.

“Markets continue to look through these risks because the global economy and corporate earnings remain relatively resilient,” said Jitania Kandhari, deputy CIO, solutions and multi-assets, at Morgan Stanley Investment Management.
“Geopolitical instability could ultimately accelerate spending in areas tied to AI, including cybersecurity, defense technology, energy infrastructure and supply-chain resiliency, reinforcing the long-term investment case.”
While the S&P 500 is trading at roughly 21 to 22 times forward earnings versus a trailing

10-year average of 19.7 times, investors are less concerned because earnings expectations are rising faster than stock prices, Kandhari said.
Among other movers, Dollar Tree (DLTR.O), climbed 18% after the discount retailer lifted its full-year profit forecast, while Best Buy (BBY.N), also added 18% after the electronics vendor forecast second-quarter sales above estimates.
Drone companies rose after the Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration was in talks to fund drone firms. Unusual Machines (UMAC.A), jumped 67%.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.63-to1 ratio on the New York Stock Exchange. There were 402 new highs and 87 new lows on the NYSE.
On the Nasdaq, 3,030 stocks rose and 1,757 fell as advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.72-to-1 ratio.
The S&P 500 posted 15 new 52-week highs and 10 new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 112 new highs and 63 new lows.

The United States and Iran traded attacks in an overnight spate of hostilities, U.S. and Iranian officials said Thursday, potentially threatening the already fragile negotiations over the fate of the Strait of Hormuz and a lasting deal to end the war.
Iran fired a ballistic missile early Thursday toward a U.S. base in Kuwait, according to the U.S. military and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, which said it was retaliation for strikes in southern Iran. Kuwaiti forces intercepted the Iranian missile, the U.S. Central Command said.
Late Wednesday, the U.S. military downed four Iranian drones and struck a drone ground-control station in Iran, according to a U.S. official who described them as self-defense — the second round of such attacks this week.

The exchange of strikes underscored the fragility of negotiations, after Washington and Iran suggested in recent days that they were close to a narrow agreement to allow commercial shipping to resume in the strait. On Wednesday, President Donald Trump reiterated that he did not want the waterway to be
under Iranian control after an Iranian state media report said Iran would manage the waterway in cooperation with
Oman.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also issued a direct warning to Oman, saying the Treasury would “aggressively target any actors involved” in imposing a toll system on commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement, the Guard did not specify which base it had targeted but said it was aimed at a U.S. installation from which the U.S. strikes originated. Further U.S. strikes would be met by an even “more decisive” response, the Guard added.
Here’s what else we’re covering:
— Strikes in Lebanon: The Israeli military widened its offensive against Hezbollah, the Iranbacked militia, in Lebanon on Thursday, striking Beirut for the first time in almost a month and pushing deeper into the country’s south. The strike has stoked fears that the city, which had largely been spared since the ceasefire in Lebanon took effect last month, could be drawn back into the fighting.
— Iran’s leadership: In a written statement Thursday, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, the country’s supreme leader, projected resilience and called for national unity. He made no mention of negotiations but warned broadly against internal division.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of Spain faced growing pressure Thursday to call early elections, a day after police officers spent about 12 hours at the headquarters of his Socialist Party investigating whether its members had surreptitiously funded a mudslinging campaign against judges involved in cases against the government and members of Sánchez’s family.
Judge Santiago Pedraz of the National Court, who ordered the police operation, accused the party of keeping a de facto criminal organization on its payroll, according to court documents reviewed by The New York Times. The Socialist Party said it would cooperate with the authorities and judicial officials, as did Sánchez, who added that the central figures in the investigation had been thrown out of the party more than a year ago.
“What I can say to the Spanish citizens is,” he said, “full cooperation with the justice system.”
The accusations deepened a domestic crisis for Sánchez, who has sought to distance himself from a growing aura of corruption among his party and allies by taking a more prominent role on the international stage. His vocal criticism of the war in Iran and the Trump administration, and his efforts to make common cause with Pope Leo XIV before a papal visit to Spain next month, have made him a liberal darling around the world.
At home is another story. Last week, his political ally and Spain’s former prime minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, was placed under formal investigation for influence peddling. Several of Sánchez’s relatives and other former allies are on trial or under investigation for corruption, including his brother, who began standing trial Thursday in connection with allegations that he had received a patronage job.
One of those defendants, Santos Cerdán, a former top Socialist Party official, is accused in the latest charges that prompted the police raid Wednesday of masterminding a smear campaign against judges and prosecutors.
On Wednesday, Sánchez met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican. He called the pope “a moral compass in the fight against injustice” at roughly the same time his own party was being accused of corruption by Spain’s justice system. Sánchez has not been directly implicated, and his office has repeatedly asserted his innocence.
But, at least in terms of public perception, that is getting harder to do.
On Thursday, the country’s conservative media lined up to attack him. An editorial in El Mundo said early elections were a “genuine democratic imperative,” declaring that the government had “no political or moral authority.”
“All of the Corruption Is Sánchez’s,” blared one typical front-page headline in conservative newspaper ABC. Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the main conservative Spanish op-
position party, mocked Sánchez for trying to wrap himself in the clean robes of the popular pope.
“If he wants to get closer to the pope, he should remember the seventh commandment,” Feijóo said, “‘Thou shalt not steal,’ and the eighth commandment, ‘Thou shalt not lie.’”
It followed a protest over the weekend by conservative Spaniards who marched through the streets of Madrid demanding Sánchez’s resignation.

Guatemala has agreed to carry out joint strikes with the United States military inside its territory to target drug trafficking groups, according to three people familiar with the talks, in a further expansion of the Trump administration’s military campaign across Latin America.
Last week, President Bernardo Arévalo of Guatemala agreed to both airstrikes and other military action in a call with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, two of those people said, with operations to start as early as next month. It was unclear what other military activities could be included in the agreement.
Guatemala has formally requested “cooperation in operations led by Guatemalan security forces against drug trafficking organizations” in a letter to Hegseth, Arévalo’s office confirmed in a statement to The New York Times. His office said that Arévalo and Hegseth spoke by phone May 19 to finalize terms but did not disclose specific details.
Guatemala would become the second country in the region to allow joint military action against criminal groups inside its borders; Ecuador agreed to a similar deal earlier this year. Under that arrangement, U.S. forces are advising and assisting Ecuadorian troops on raids and airstrikes against suspected drug gangs that have turned Ecuador into one of the deadliest countries in Latin America.
One of the next countries that the Defense Department intends to press to accept joint military action is Honduras, said two of the people familiar with the plans.
The Trump administration is targeting Guatemala and Honduras to pressure Mexico into accepting joint counterdrug operations, those two people said. While Washington has been pushing for U.S. boots on the ground and drone strikes, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico has staunchly rejected the requests.

The White House’s broader strategy is to normalize an American military presence across Latin America to gain leverage over Mexico, according to the two people.
That strategy is being advocated by Stephen Miller, President Donald Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser, as well as Joseph Humire, for now the Pentagon’s top policy official for homeland defense and the Americas, the two people said.
Miller chairs a bimonthly meeting — called a “wins” meeting — at which various government agencies report on recent successes, with the Pentagon’s death toll from boat strikes regularly highlighted as one of the biggest, according to those two people and one other person familiar with the meeting.
The people interviewed for this story spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
The White House denied the characterization of Miller’s so-called wins meeting. “The administration continues to work to carry out the President’s agenda,” the White House said in a statement to the Times.
The deal with Guatemala, which has not yet been publicly announced, is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to press countries throughout the region to allow joint operations inside their territories, accor-
ding to those three people and a fourth person with knowledge of the strategy. Nearly 20 Latin American countries are already part of the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition, which was formed this year by the Trump administration to target cartels and organized crime across the Western Hemisphere.
Trump met with conservative and rightwing Latin American leaders in Florida in March, promising that together they would “eradicate the criminal cartels plaguing our region.”
The U.S. military is “knocking the hell out of them where we can, and we’re going to go heavier,” Trump told the leaders. “We need your help; you have to — just tell us where they are.”
The administration has deployed U.S. military resources to the region on a scale not seen in decades and designated more than a dozen Latin American and Caribbean groups as foreign terrorist organizations.
“Guatemala’s recent raid on a drug lab showcases their commitment to take the fight to narco-terrorists in their country,” the U.S. Southern Command, which oversees operations in Latin America, posted on the social platform X on Thursday. “Together, we are working to combat the scourge of narco-terrorism in the region.”
So far, most countries in the coalition
have been reluctant to allow the Pentagon to strike inside their nations because of concerns about domestic backlash, said three of the people familiar with the effort.
While many citizens across Latin America want their governments to do more to curb drug-related violence, they remain wary of the U.S. military operating inside their countries after decades of intervention by Washington, including bloody political coups.
In September, the Pentagon began striking boats in the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific Ocean, in what it said was an effort to deter drug traffickers from using those routes. There have been 59 strikes that have killed at least 196 people, according to a tally by the Times, though the Trump administration has given scant evidence that the targets were drug smugglers.
Experts say the boat strikes may be illegal and carry legal risks for the Pentagon. An expansion of that effort inside Latin American countries may come with even more legal risk, people familiar with the effort said.
Former U.S. officials have said that even if the Defense Department’s leadership approved the strikes, the lower-ranking officers who carry them out could be held culpable for killing drug trafficking suspects who may in fact be innocent.

“As with the boat strikes, depending on the facts, further attacks could amount to premeditated killings outside of armed conflict, which some of us lawyers would refer to as murder,” said Brian Finucane, a former State Department lawyer who specializes in the laws of war. “Congress never authorized any of these strikes. So U.S. personnel who participate in these actions could face consequences down the road, after the Trump administration.”
Even if U.S. forces only provide intelligence or other logistical support to Latin American countries to conduct their strikes, they could be culpable for aiding and abetting violations of U.S. and international law, he said.
The U.S. military strikes are part of a shifting strategy in Washington’s war on drugs, which has traditionally been carried out by the Justice Department and its Drug Enforcement Administration. The antidrug effort has long been seen as a law enforcement issue, with Washington prioritizing the arrest of suspects — whose interrogation can help investigators dismantle smuggling networks — rather than killing them, as in a conventional war.

When Pope Leo XIV presented a 42,300-word open letter to the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics on Monday, calling for protections against the rise of artificial intelligence, he was joined by Christopher Olah, a co-founder of Anthropic, which is one of the tech industry’s leading AI companies.
As Leo urged corporate executives, government regulators and other citizens of the world to safeguard humanity from the dangers of AI, he included Olah as a symbol of the dialogue he hopes to foster between the leaders of the spiritual and technological worlds.
But for Jeremy Nixon, Monday’s gathering at the Vatican showed that those two worlds are far from aligned. While the pope said that AI was fundamentally not human, Nixon, a well-connected figure in the Bay Area’s frenetic AI scene, argued that Olah’s remarks seemed to hint at the opposite.
“They are not in dialogue,” Nixon said during an interview at AGI House, a San Francisco “hacker house” with deep ties to many of the people who helped create the AI technologies discussed in the pope’s encyclical. “Their perspectives are distinct.”
The difference between the humanist’s view of AI’s risks and the technologist’s dream of what it could become is something that has long been discussed in Nixon’s community. “It is the reason the community exists,” Nixon said. “It is its underlying purpose.”
Nixon, 33, is one of the founders of AGI House, which is named for Silicon Valley’s headlong pursuit of “artificial general intelligence,” a hypothetical machine that can do anything the human brain can do.
“We are named for this moment in history,” he said of his seven-room group house. Over the years, it has been home to a rotating collection of researchers, entrepreneurs and philosophers.
More than most, Nixon understands the technology emerging from Silicon Valley and the attitudes of the people building it. In the late 2010s and early 2020s, when Silicon Valley started developing the technologies that power chatbots, Nixon worked in Google’s central AI lab. Later, he founded AGI House with Andrej Karpathy, who was an early employee at OpenAI, oversaw self-driving tech at Tesla and recently joined Anthropic.
Nixon said the papal encyclical might mean something to the world’s Catholics, but

Jeremy Nixon, co-founder of A.G.I. House, in San Francisco, May 24, 2026. Pope Leo XIV’s spiritual message on artificial intelligence arrived as Silicon Valley’s A.I. enthusiasts work on their own spirituality through technology. (Kelsey McClellan/ The New York Times)
he doubted that it would have an effect on Silicon Valley. The only reason that Silicon Valley even paid attention to the event, he said, was that Leo invited Olah to speak.
For Nixon, the pope’s open letter read like one of the many government policy documents that have been shared among think tanks and regulators over the past several years. “It did not seem like the church had thought deeply about what their independent perspective was on AI,” he said. “It is not clear they could do that even if they tried.”
He added: “They couldn’t have a position on it, because they don’t understand it.”
The response to the encyclical from across Silicon Valley was fairly muted.
David Sacks, the Silicon Valley investor who served as the White House AI czar, pushed back on the pope’s call for additional AI regulation. “If we hand governments sweeping power over AI development in the name of safety, how do we prevent it from being used to censor, surveil, and control citizens — as Orwell foretold in ‘1984’?” he said.
Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter and who now runs the financial company Block, welcomed the pope’s call for AI’s underpinnings — patents, data and technological infrastructure — to be shared with everyone, not just a relative few.
The Vatican did not respond to a request for comment.
Looking out over San Francisco, toward the Golden Gate Bridge in the north, AGI
House plays host to ad hoc seminars on the philosophies driving Silicon Valley’s pursuit of AI and “hackathons” in which researchers from the leading labs explore the boundaries of the technologies they are building.
Many of the founders and important researchers at Anthropic and OpenAI joined the earliest gatherings at AGI House. Nixon is now founder and CEO of a startup called the Infinity Artificial Intelligence Institute, which is trying to automate the creation of AI.
Nixon said he has met a generation of scientists who shunned traditional religion in favor of technology. After growing up with books like “The God Delusion” — in which evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins painted God as a false belief contradicted by empirical evidence — he and his peers saw AI as an alternative that was more real and far more powerful.
AI has started to crack math problems that humans struggled with for decades, he said, and it will soon cure diseases in the same way. “Practically speaking, it will achieve the outcomes that many religions claim their deities would be able to achieve,” he said.
This is an increasingly common belief among researchers in Silicon Valley. They insist they are on their way to building a more powerful species — or even a new God.
“People are matter-of-factly saying that they are looking to build a machine God,” said Rayan Krishnan, the CEO of Vals AI, a San Francisco company that tracks the perfor-
mance of the latest AI technologies. “They are not saying that ironically or in jest. They are saying it as a matter of fact.”
In his encyclical, called “Magnifica Humanitas” or “Magnificent Humanity,” Leo called for safeguards that would protect humanity. He stressed that humans must continue to play a fundamental role in the workplace.
“A society that guarantees employment to only a small fraction of the population, despite having a high level of technical development, risks exposing many to forced inactivity,” he wrote. “This creates a paradox of material progress and anthropological regression that undermines the foundations of a just and stable social peace.”
Work, he added, is not just a way of earning income. It is “a requirement of the human condition, a normal path toward maturity, development and personal fulfillment.”
He also used the biblical story of the Tower of Babel — in which a group of humans who speak a single unified language aim to build a tower that reaches to heavens so they can exert their power — as a way of warning Silicon Valley against the pitfalls of trying to outdo God.
His most forceful message was that AI was fundamentally not human, because it could only imitate certain parts of human intelligence and behavior. “So-called artificial intelligences do not undergo experiences, do not possess a body, do not feel joy or pain, do not mature through relationships and do not know from within what love, work, friendship or responsibility mean,” he wrote.
But in a seven-minute speech at the Vatican, Olah, the Anthropic co-founder, described a technology that may be progressing beyond a simple machine.
“What is actually happening inside them?” he said. “We find structures that mirror results from human neuroscience. We find evidence of introspection. We find internal states that functionally mirror joy, satisfaction, fear, grief and unease.”
On Monday evening, Nixon and others in his circle gathered in the AGI House living room to discuss the encyclical. They agreed that Leo’s open letter would have little effect on Silicon Valley, he said, but they wondered whether Silicon Valley might have an effect on the pope — if the Vatican might use AI technologies to “create a New Jerusalem.”
“AI and its capabilities represent something analogous to the Second Coming,” he said.

Superior Double-A Baseball League Most Valuable Player Edison Mora, an outfielder for the Brujos of Guayama, posted a .487 batting average during the 2026 season, with 37 hits in 76 official at-bats.
By THE STAR STAFF
Brujos of Guayama outfielder Edison Mora has been named the Most Valuable Player of the 2026 Superior Double-A Baseball League season.
“I am super happy, proud, and deeply grateful. This was something I had my sights set on because it was the one thing missing from my career, and, thank God, we made it happen,” Mora stated in written remarks earlier this week. “It is something I will always be thankful for, because that is what you work for. You strive to achieve milestones like this, and I give thanks to God for my health.”
The voting process was coordinated by the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation and involved the participation of journalists, play-by-play announcers, and sports commentators.
Mora accumulated 129 points, followed by Carlos Sánchez of Juana Díaz with 91, Kevin Luciano of Cayey with 37, Jan Hernández of Yabucoa with 21, José Rivera of Comerío with 19, and Antonio Jiménez of Las Piedras with 10.
During the regular season, the Guayama player claimed the Double-A batting title for the second consecutive year. His batting average was .487, with 37 hits in 76 official
at-bats. Additionally, he scored 22 runs, drove in 16, and stole 12 bases.
Of his 37 hits, 28 were singles, 6 were doubles, 1 was a triple, and 2 were home runs.
In just three seasons in the Double-A league, Mora was named Rookie of the Year in 2024, batting champion in 2025 and 2026, and the Gold Glove winner for center field in 2025.
“Honestly, this brings me immense joy,” Mora said Wednesday. “I am extremely grateful for everything I have achieved. I can’t even fully express the pride I feel regarding all the people who helped me make this happen.”
Mora became just the third batter since 1955 to win consecutive batting titles in Double-A. Before him, the feat was accomplished by Héctor Ayala in 1977 and 1978, and Diómedes Delgado in 1988 and 1989.
“I have dedicated all my awards to my family and to everyone who has helped me, but this one, in particular, I dedicate to myself -- for all the effort I put in, all the work I invested, and all the times things weren’t going well yet I was able to focus with discipline, dig deep, and achieve it,” he said. “It is an award I will hold close to my heart.”
Mora succeeds 2025 MVP José Rivera of Comerío.

The 2026 season of the Women’s Softball Premier League (LPSF by its initials in Spanish) will officially begin this Friday, with the opening game scheduled for 7 p.m. at Luis “Papa” Rivera Park in Cidra.
In the sole matchup of opening night, the defending runners-up, the Leonas of Ponce, will visit the reigning champions, the Bravas of Cidra, in a highly anticipated rematch.
“One could say that this is a continuation of what was formerly the Superior League,” said Jean M. Rodríguez Martínez, general director of the LPSF. “The difference is that there was an administrative separation. The Federation presented a proposal to the team owners, an agreement was reached, and -- to reflect this change -- the league was given this new identity.”
“The only real change is that the team owners now administer the League; in all other respects, it remains a league sanctioned by the Federation, and they continue to answer to the Federation,” the official added. “Furthermore, players must remain in compliance with the Federation in order to participate in international competitions.”
The season will feature seven franchises: the Bravas, Leonas, Grises of Humacao, Valencianas of Juncos, Caribeñas of Salinas, Prodigiosas of Sabana Grande and Costaneras of Guánica.
Each team will play 18 games in a round-robin format during the regular season.
Among the key new features introduced this year is
the implementation of the “manager challenge” -- a video review mechanism that will allow team managers to request a review of specific plays during games.
Additionally, each squad will be permitted to utilize up to three “reinforcement” players (guest players) throughout the season. Teams will also have the option to temporarily replace up to three players from their roster who are away participating in international competitions.
“For this year, the number of reinforcements has been increased,” Rodríguez Martínez noted. “In the past, the league allowed two reinforcements for teams that failed to qualify for the postseason, and one for the top four teams. Now, three reinforcements have been approved for everyone. It is basically the same policy currently in place for volleyball and basketball. Consequently, every team is entitled to three reinforcements, and that is going to give the league a significant boost.”
“In addition to that, in July -when the national team players depart -- teams will have the benefit of replacing those national team players with additional reinforcements,” he added. “At any given moment, you could have a team like Cidra fielding six reinforcement players.”
The postseason will feature bestof-five semifinal series -- expanded from best-of three -- under the banner “Road
to Glory,” while the championship series will be contested in a best-of-seven format and will be named the “Crown Series.”
“Now the finals -- just like in all the other leagues -will be a best-of-seven series,” Rodríguez Martínez said. Another new feature is that every game of the season will be streamed live on YouTube, allowing fans to follow the action from anywhere.
“We are committed to providing fans with up-to-date information through our social media channels,” Rodríguez Martínez said. “That is why it has been important for me to ensure that every game is available via live stream, that fans can follow the play-by-play action via iScore, and that our Facebook and Instagram accounts are kept constantly updated.”

The action continues on Saturday when Humacao visits Sabana Grande and Juncos plays in Salinas, with games starting at 4 p.m. On Sunday, May 31, Sabana Grande will be in Ponce at 3 p.m., while Guánica will visit Juncos and Salinas will travel to Humacao for 4 p.m. games.
The Bravas of Cidra will begin the defense of their back-to-back championships this Friday when they host the Leonas of Ponce in the opening game of the 2026 Women’s Softball Premier League season.
