Ismael Guadalupe, relentless voice of Vieques’ struggle, dies at 82

For more than half a century, the name Ismael Guadalupe was synonymous with the fight for Vieques -- its land, its people, and its right to live free from the shadow of military occupation. On Thursday, his family announced that the revered community activist died at age 82, closing a chapter in Puerto Rico’s social movements but leaving behind a legacy that reshaped an island’s destiny.

“With profound sorrow, the Guadalupe Torres family wishes to announce the passing of Ismael Guadalupe Ortiz,” his relatives wrote, noting that he died on Wednesday. They described him as a “tireless fighter for peace and justice in Vieques,” a man whose activism extended to defending public education, teachers, and the broader struggle for Puerto Rico’s sovereignty. His spirituality, they added, was rooted in a vision of social justice and a deep Christian faith.

Guadalupe had been hospitalized in Caguas in recent days after suffering a stroke. Even as news of his declining health circulated quietly among Viequenses, the announcement of his death reverberated across the archipelago, stirring memories of a movement that once captured global attention.

Born and raised in Vieques, Guadalupe was a teacher by profession, but his vocation was always community leadership. His activism intensified in 1999, after the death of civilian security guard David Sanes Rodríguez, who was killed during a U.S. Navy bombing exercise. The tragedy ignited a wave of civil resistance that would transform Guadalupe into one of the movement’s most visible and respected figures. He helped organize encampments, marches and acts of civil disobedience that drew religious leaders, environmentalists, politicians and thousands of ordinary Puerto Ricans to Vieques. Guadalupe himself was arrested multiple times for entering restricted military zones -- actions he always framed as peaceful, moral imperatives.

As a member of the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques, he became a steady, uncompromising voice documenting the environmental contamination, health crises, and economic stagnation linked to decades of military activity. His advocacy was not theatrical; it was methodical, grounded in the lived experience of an island long treated as expendable.

The pressure worked. On May 1, 2003, the U.S. Navy withdrew from Vieques, ending more than 60 years of military exercises. The moment is widely regarded as one of the most significant collective victories in Puerto Rico’s contemporary history -- a triumph of sustained, cross-sector civil resistance.

Guadalupe never claimed the victory as his own. He insisted it belonged to the people of Vieques, to the churches that opened their doors, to the activists who camped on the bombing range, and to the families who refused to be silent.

In the years that followed, Guadalupe remained a guardian of Vieques’ unfinished struggles: the lack of adequate healthcare, the unreliable maritime transportation system, and the slow, incomplete decontamination of former military lands. He continued to speak out, often reminding officials that the Navy’s departure was not the end of the story but the beginning of a long recovery.

His family said they are deeply grateful for the outpouring of affection and solidarity they have received. Details of an ecumenical service to honor his life will be announced soon.

For many Puerto Ricans, Guadalupe’s passing marks the loss of a moral compass -- a man who believed that justice was not an abstract ideal but a daily practice. His legacy endures in the beaches once closed by military fences, in the communities still fighting for equitable services, and in the collective memory of a small island that proved the power of persistence.

Governor faces high-stakes address as scandals, party tensions threaten her standing

With her public image battered by months of controversy and inter nal party friction, Gov. Jenniffer González Colón was expected at press time on Thursday to use her State of the Common wealth address to reset the narrative of her administration and reassert herself as a viable contender for the 2028 election.

Political analysts said ahead of the speech that it could be her most consequential mo ment since taking office.

“If she is unable to do that, she will be replaced,” political analyst Ángel Rosa warned on his radio program, reflecting a growing sense that the governor’s political future hinges on her ability to regain control of the public conversation.

González Colón was slated to deliver her message late Thursday afternoon before a Legislature dominated by her own New Pro gressive Party (NPP), though support within the party has been uneven. Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz has repeatedly criti cized her administration, and several NPP mayors have expressed frustration over what they describe as inconsistent leadership. The governor was to enter the chamber carrying the weight of a series of scandals that have eroded confidence in her team and compli cated her governing agenda.

The most recent controversy involves the referral of former Permit Management Office Assistant Secretary Norberto Almodóvar Vélez to multiple investigative entities after an internal probe found alleged undue pressure on staff, retaliation, and attempts to obstruct a federally funded request for proposals, or

RFP, process. While the administration has framed the referral as evidence of its com mitment to accountability, critics argue the episode exposes deeper management failures within the permitting system.

That case follows other high-profile issues. Family Secretary Suzanne Roig Fuertes has faced renewed scrutiny over past allegations of administrative irregularities and conflicts of interest tied to her tenure at the Department of Health. Former Housing Secretary Ciary Pérez Peña, meanwhile, became embroiled in questions over irregularities in vehicle inspections at a business owned by her and her family. Together, the controversies have fueled a narrative of instability that the

governor is now under pressure to reverse.

Still, González Colón was expected to arrive at her address with pockets of sup port. On Thursday, a coalition of public servants, community leaders, merchants and residents from Puerto Rico’s western region publicly backed the governor, calling her budget message an opportunity to reinforce her commitment to economic stability and development.

“We are confident that this budget will be aligned with the real needs of our people,” said Julennie Vázquez, regional director for the NPP’s western public-servants group. She emphasized priorities such as safety, health, education, infrastructure and eco

nomic growth.

This week, the governor presented her fiscal year 2027 budget plan to the Financial Oversight and Management Board, high lighting what she described as one of Puerto Rico’s strongest periods of fiscal stability in recent years. The proposal includes a new Budget Stabilization Fund with an initial $729 million deposit, intended to eventually reach 13.5% of General Fund expenditures. She also announced a new Capital Fund dedicated exclusively to infrastructure and permanent improvements.

González Colón defended her “Cheque Pa’ Ti” program, which will distribute $554 million in direct payments to working and middle‑class taxpayers, saying it is fund ed by revenue collections that exceeded projections. She pointed to rising General Fund revenues -- up about 4% over Treasury estimates and a 3.6% increase in sales and use tax receipts compared to last fiscal year. Employment, she added, has reached its highest level in 17 years, bolstered by more than $2.6 billion in new manufacturing investments identified by Moody’s.

But the political opposition remains unconvinced. Popular Democratic Party Secretary General Manuel Calderón Cerame said Thursday that the governor’s address “will not convince the country,” citing what he called broken promises on tax reform, permit reform, the elimination of the inventory tax, and the unresolved crises in energy, water service, crime and the cost of living.

“While the NPP fights and fails, the Popular Democratic Party and [Resident Commission er] Pablo José [Hernández Rivera] are working and moving forward,” he said.

Treasury disburses $100.3 million to more than 221,000 taxpayers

Treasury Secretary Ángel Pantoja Rodríguez announced on Thursday the disbursement of $100.3 million in initial tax relief payments to 221,381 taxpayers.

“We have already sent out a first batch of ‘Cheque para Ti’ [Check for You] payments to 221,381 taxpayers whose tax returns had already been processed and who met the require ments to receive the tax relief,” Pantoja Rodríguez said during a press conference.

The treasury secretary indicated that payments will be sent out daily over the next seven business days.

Pantoja Rodríguez said this phase will cover the majority of the 690,000 taxpayers expected to benefit from the tax relief. The initial payments correspond to tax returns that have al

ready been processed. Returns that are still under review will be included in the recalculation once their processing is complete.

“We are pleased with the programming and planning work carried out by the Treasury Department team to get this process up and running,” he said.

Pantoja Rodríguez affirmed that payments will be issued to eligible taxpayers in an efficient and secure manner.

The official noted that eligible individuals will receive a notification regarding the direct deposit or the mailing of their payment to the postal address on file.

The notification will also include information regarding the recalculation of the tax relief benefit.

The treasury chief noted that further information is available in Internal Revenue Circular 26-10, published on the website hacienda.pr.gov.

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón presented her fiscal year 2027 budget plan to the Financial Oversight and Management Board this week, highlighting what she described as one of Puerto Rico’s strongest periods of fiscal stability in recent years.

Lawmakers push for rapid removal of deceased voters from registry

Rep. Swanny Enit Vargas Laureano of the Popular Democratic Party announced the filing of House Bill 1287, a measure she introduced along with Dignity Project Rep. Lisie Burgos Muñiz to establish a mandatory and continuous system that guarantees the removal of deceased individuals from the voter registry within a maximum of 25 days.

The legislators said the bill will be an effective tool for quickly cleaning up the voter registry and strengthening the reliability of the electoral process.

Vargas emphasized that the legislation creates a formal protocol between the Demographic Registry and the State Elections Commission (SEC), requiring district regis-

trars to submit death information monthly within the first 15 days of each month, while the SEC would have an additional 10 days

to process the removals. The measure also requires semiannual reports to the Legislative Assembly and mandates that the Puerto Rico Innovation and Technology Service (PRITS) ensure a swift and secure exchange of information under strict cybersecurity parameters.

It was further emphasized that the bill is in response to allegations regarding thousands of deceased individuals who remained on voter registration lists during the 2024 elections. Vargas and Burgos, both elected at-large, assert, based on journalistic analysis, that some 6,000 deceased individuals were still listed on the voter registry less than 24 hours after the last election.

Vargas said the situation underscores the urgent need to adopt a permanent, uniform and auditable mechanism for purging the

voter registry.

Although current law allows for the sharing of death information, there is no clear procedure or defined timeframe to ensure the accuracy of the voter registry, the legislators noted.

“House Bill 1287 fills this operational gap and replicates the model that requires notifying the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP) of deaths in order to cancel licenses and license plates,” they said. “The same logic of automatic updates should be applied to the voter registry to guarantee accuracy and transparency.”

Vargas said the measure should take effect immediately to ensure continuous purging before the next elections. The bill is expected to be referred to the House Government Committee for review.

Environmental organization warns of bill’s potential impact on karst system

Environmental organization Citizens of the Karst (CDK) expressed concern this week over House Bill (HB) 1079, which they claim would weaken fundamental protections for one of the island’s most important natural systems.

HB 1079 proposes amending the Law for the Protection and Conservation of the Karst Physiography of Puerto Rico (Law 292-1999). Law 292 was passed to recognize the unique value of the karst region and establish mechanisms to protect essential resources for Puerto Rico, including aquifers, caves, sinkholes, ecosystems, and habitats for numerous species of flora and fauna.

“The karst is not simply a landscape or a collection of geological formations,” CDK President Abel Vale Nieves said. “It is a natural infrastructure that sustains resources essential for the life and well-being of Puerto Rico. To speak of the karst is to speak of water, biodiversity, and the future.”

The environmental organization noted that for more than three decades it has conducted research, education and environmental advocacy efforts related to the protection of

the karst system and its associated resources.

Among the main concerns identified by the organization are proposed changes that could alter the scope and application of the protections established by Law 292, as well as potential implications for the conservation and management of natural resources essential to Puerto Rico.

“The protection of the karst has never been an issue separate from environmental conservation,” Vale Nieves added. “It is about protecting resources that directly impact the quality of life of communities and the well-being of future generations.”

The CDK called on citizens to become informed about the bill’s contents and to actively participate in the democratic process by publicly expressing their concerns.

The organization urged citizens to:

• Contact their legislators

• Request public hearings on the measure

• Publicly express their concerns and opposition

• Share information about the importance of karst ecosystems and the potential effects of the proposal.

“The decisions we make today about our natural systems

will have consequences that will transcend generations,” Vale Nieves said. “Citizen participation is essential to ensure that these decisions are made with the information and analysis that an issue like this deserves.”

OMB director: Fiscal board expected to approve $100 million for special ed

ffice of Management and Budget (OMB) Executive Director Orlando Rivera Berríos said Thursday that the Financial Oversight and Management Board should be approving $100 million this week to cover payments to special education service academies. In a radio interview, Rivera stated that he is concerned

about how a $5 billion budget for the Department of Education is facing such “pressing” needs, and that he will personally evaluate the use of resources within the agency.

“Our commitment is to identify those funds in the 2027 budget,” the official said. “Specifically, the Special Education area is being allocated an additional $20 million compared to 2026, so we are waiting for the board to approve the $100 million request to address this issue.”

The official added that the oversight board is expected to approve rescheduling the $100 million before the end of the week to address the outstanding payments.

Rivera’s reaction came after complaints from special education academies alleging that the Department of Education owes them millions of dollars, leading several centers to warn that they could suspend or cease services at the end of May if they do not receive payment.

Trump’s government moves to spare an unhappy taxpayer named Trump

It is hard to imagine that any previous president would have thought he could engage in such an audacious act of self-dealing.

Sue the government he runs, then settle the lawsuit with himself by barring the IRS from auditing his past returns. And as part of that adeal, hand over $1.8 billion of taxpayer money to his allies.

President Donald Trump has used the federal government to advance his own personal interests and those of his family and allies more expansively and openly than any past occupant of the White House. Any review of history would suggest that it is not even close.

But as Trump, the only felon ever elected president, heads deeper into his second term, he seems even less inhibited by the rules, written or unwritten, that governed his predecessors. While deeply unpopular with the general public, he has demonstrated as recently as this week that he remains the undisputed master of his own party, and therefore appears to feel that he can do as he likes without fear of Congress standing in his way.

His self-granted writ of immunity from IRS audits amounts to a get-out-of-audits-free card, essentially the equivalent of pardoning himself for any past offenses and forgiving any tax debt or penalties. While the status of any now-short-circuited audits is not publicly known, his action could theoretically save him from paying $100 million or more, based on past estimates of what his liability might have been under an unfavorable IRS decision.

The IRS audit immunity for himself, along with the taxpayer payout to his supporters — potentially including those who attacked the Capitol and beat police officers on Jan. 6, 2021, in an effort to overturn an election that Trump lost — stand out in their brazenness, yet not in what they say about his underlying approach to governance in his sixth year in office.

Trump has so blurred the lines between his financial interests and his public office that it is hard to define where the lines lie anymore, or if they still exist. He, his family and his friends have made a fortune in the 16 months since he returned to power in ways that once would have been seen as conflicts of interest and possibly generated investigations.

“Presidents have had corrupt, even criminal, family members,” said Barbara A. Perry, a presidential scholar at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center, citing, among others, Hunter Biden. “But none of them succeeded to the extent of the Trump family in the level of graft achieved.”

She added: “They have won the presidency twice, emasculated Congress, created a supportive high court, and reshaped the law and institutions to absolve them of any wrongdoing, while making billions of ill-gotten dollars.”

Anna Kelly, a White House spokesperson, rejected the assertion.

“This is the same tired narrative that Democrats have pushed against President Trump, his family and his administration for a decade,” she said. “President Trump only acts in the best interests of the American public — which is why they overwhelmingly reelected him to this office, despite years of lies and false accusations against him and his businesses from the fake news media. There are no conflicts of interest.”

is leveraging the presidency for his own benefit. A poll by YouGov in March found that 54% of Americans believed the term “corrupt” applied “a lot” to the president, up from 46% a year earlier.

Democrats lashed out after the announcement of the $1.8 billion fund for Trump’s allies and the IRS immunity. “A stunning act of corruption,” said Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon. “A scam,” wrote Reps. Richard Neal of Massachusetts and Jamie Raskin of Maryland. “This one is just eye-popping unbelievable,” said Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

Even some Republicans indicated unease with the arrangement. Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the majority leader, said he was “not a big fan” of the taxpayer fund for Trump’s supporters. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania went so far as to say that “we’re going to try to kill it.”

But the Republican congressional majorities, which eagerly pursued corruption allegations against President Joe Biden and his family, have until now shown little interest in scrutinizing Trump’s blending of personal and public interests. And Trump demonstrated once again Tuesday with the defeat of Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky in a Republican primary that he still wields unrivaled power to punish those who cross him.

Just last week, a disclosure form indicated that Trump’s investment portfolio executed more than 3,600 trades in the first three months of this year alone, many involving companies that he has favored with access or policies. His portfolio bought stock in companies run by 15 of the 17 CEOs he brought with him to China last week. The timing of some purchases has raised questions about whether they were related to statements he made or to policies he embraced.

The Trump Organization, his family-owned business, said that the trades were made by outside brokerage firms, and that he, his family and his firm did not have any role in deciding what stocks to buy or sell. But unlike most modern presidents, Trump has not put his investments in a genuine blind trust, since, as the disclosure form made clear, it is no secret to him what companies he has shares in as he goes about making policy decisions.

His family has profited enormously off his new cryptocurrency business at the same time the president has rolled back regulation of the industry. Trump pardoned the founder of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, which was involved in helping the Trump family build its crypto startup. Jeff Bezos, whose businesses receive federal contracts and depend on U.S. Postal Service rates, approved paying an estimated $28 million to Melania Trump, the first lady, for a self-promotional film streamed on Amazon.

Trump’s sons and son-in-law are involved in multibillion-dollar business ventures in the Gulf Arab states at the same time the president is making those nations favorites of his foreign policy. An investment firm tied to the United Arab Emirates made a $500 million investment in the Trump crypto firm just days before his inauguration. The Trump administration later approved the export of advanced chips to the UAE. Altogether, Bloomberg has estimated that the family’s crypto investments have increased its net worth by more than $1 billion, at least on paper.

Polls show that most of the public has concluded that Trump

Speaking with reporters Wednesday, Trump defended his lawsuit against the IRS over a contractor illegally providing his tax forms to reporters. The contractor has since been convicted by the Biden Justice Department and sentenced to prison, but Trump argued the agency itself should still be held responsible. He still acted as if he had nothing to do with the eventual deal negotiated by lawyers who work for him, including the acting attorney general, Todd Blanche, who was his personal defense attorney in criminal cases before the 2024 election.

“I guess they made a settlement of some kind,” Trump said. “I wasn’t involved in the settlement. I could have been involved. But I didn’t choose to be.” He did not explain why the release of his tax forms, even if the government is held liable, should preclude him from being audited for his past returns.

As for the $1.8 billion fund, it is to go to those people who were supposedly mistreated by the Justice Department under Biden, which could include the Jan. 6 attackers, who were already pardoned by Trump. “People were destroyed,” he said. “They went to jail. Their families were ruined. They committed suicide.” He made no mention of the police officers who were assaulted or later died.

Even the most notorious presidential financial scandals in history — Credit Mobilier during Ulysses S. Grant’s administration, Teapot Dome during Warren G. Harding’s presidency and Watergate during Richard M. Nixon’s tenure — did not come close to the money swirling around the Trump family during his second term.

“Not only do the three most infamous previous presidency financial-political scandals seem minor compared to Trump’s,” said Perry, the presidential scholar, “but none of the three presidents — Grant, Harding, Nixon — padded their own bank accounts.” People around Grant and Harding traded public policy for money, but there was no evidence that the presidents themselves profited. And the money raised by Nixon’s team went to his campaign dirty tricks slush fund and hush money for the Watergate burglars, rather into the president’s pocket.

Jan. 6 police officers sue to block Trump’s payout fund

Two police officers who defended the Capitol against a pro-Trump mob on Jan. 6, 2021, sued the Trump administration earlier this week to try to block the creation of a nearly $1.8 billion fund that they say will be used to reward the rioters and right-wing militia groups.

The lawsuit, filed by former Officer Harry Dunn of the U.S. Capitol Police and Officer Daniel Hodges of Washington’s Metropolitan Police, alleges that the Trump administration has created a “slush fund to finance the insur rectionists and paramilitary groups that commit violence in his name.” It names as defendants President Donald Trump, as well as acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The suit contends the administration has exceeded its statutory authority by creating the fund without the authorization of Congress.

Trump administration officials have portrayed the fund as a way to compensate people who claim they were unfairly targeted for prosecution by the Biden Justice Department and Democrats, but it has generated widespread opposition, including from some Republicans. Critics see it as nothing more than a pipeline to funnel taxpayer money to Trump’s allies.

“Although Trump and his cronies have been secretive about the fund’s ends, reporting leaves no doubt that it will be used, among other purposes, to pay the nearly 1,600 people charged with attacking the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021,” the lawsuit says.

The White House referred questions on the lawsuit to the Justice Department, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Dunn and Hodges were among the officers who testified before Congress about the violence they witnessed as the mob sought to stop lawmakers from certifying Joe Biden presidential victory.

The generation that grew up with AI hates it

When Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, started talking about artificial intelligence during a commencement speech at the University of Arizona on Friday, the graduates erupted in boos. “AI is going to touch everything,” said Schmidt, as his stadiumsized audience roared its disapproval. “Whatever path you choose, AI will become part of how work is done.” Maybe he meant this as a promise of opportunity, but the students seemed to hear it as a threat — or a curse.

Something similar happened at the University of Central Florida a week earlier, when real estate executive Gloria Caulfield described AI as “the next industrial revolution.” Listeners booed, and someone shouted, “AI sucks!” Caulfield appeared to be caught off guard, but she shouldn’t have been, because evidence of a ferocious backlash against AI, especially among young people, is everywhere.

One recent report found that only 18% of Gen Zers feel hopeful about AI, and almost half say the risks outweigh the benefits. Politicians with followings among young people — including Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., on the left and Florida gubernatorial candidate James Fishback on the right — are calling for moratoriums on data centers. AI is increasingly a pop culture villain. “The people who make this stuff are losers,” said comedian Hannah Einbinder, star of HBO’s “Hacks,” a show that has put hatred of the technology at the center of its current season. There have even been some high-profile acts of anti-AI violence, including a Molotov cocktail hurled at the home of OpenAI’s chief, Sam Altman.

As Americans rebel against AI, the industry’s oligarchic leaders are responding by trying to buy even more political influence, pouring money into super political action committees and lobbying. Groups supporting AI and crypto, Politico reported this month, “are already becoming the most dominant players on the political battlefield, spending heavily for candidates on both sides of the aisle and in some cases rivaling the fundraising of long-established party groups.” The irony is that the industry’s attempts to game the democratic system are a big part of its deep unpopularity.

One reason Americans seem to despise AI more than people in other countries is that they know our government is

too sclerotic to handle it. Researchers at Stanford University found that out of people in 30 countries, Americans had the least faith in their leaders’ ability to regulate AI. Internationally, people tend to feel more positively about AI when the state tries to ensure that it benefits them.

In a recent article, Bharat Ramamurti, former deputy director of President Joe Biden’s National Economic Council, described how Japan uses public funding and regulatory policy to encourage companies to use AI to complement work by humans rather than replace it. In the Nordic countries, workers often have a formal role in deciding how AI will be deployed and can use acceptance of it as a bargaining chip. As a result, there have been “plenty of technological advancements, including on AI,” he told me. (Just last month, Norway introduced self-driving buses on public roads.)

By contrast, in the United States, where neither the government nor corporations feel the need to do much for those made redundant by AI, the spread of the technology amplifies an already chronic feeling of precarity. Companies are citing AI as the reason for mass layoffs; according to the Alliance for Secure AI, there have been almost 120,000 AIlinked job losses in the United States just since last year. Recent college graduates are facing a brutal job market as entry-level positions disappear and AI renders the application process inhumanly opaque. During the dot-com boom, tech companies often seemed as if they were leading an arms race to offer new benefits to workers. Now, as Axios reported, firms are rescinding benefits to fund AI expansion.

We simply lack the political infrastructure in America to distribute AI’s benefits to the public. With the systematic evisceration of the labor movement that started during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, said Ramamurti, “the institutions that many other countries have for mediating these kinds of technological advances don’t exist in the United States.”

Of course, it’s not only in the workplace that many people feel exploited by AI. Grocery stores are using shoppers’ personal data to set pricing. Health insurance companies are employing it to decide what treatments get covered. As MarketWatch reported, a Medicare pilot program using AI for prior authorizations resulted in “some patients waiting weeks longer to get medical procedures — if they receive care at all.” For many people, AI feels extractive, not additive. It’s telling that the generation most exposed to AI appears to like it the least. A New York Times poll released Monday shows that 47% of voters under 30 rate AI as “mostly bad,” the highest percentage in any age bracket.

AI executives, buffered by their colossal fortunes and resulting political connections, don’t seem to feel much pressure to win people over. Instead, the industry’s message is coercive and bullying: Adopt our product on our terms or be forever left behind. Tech billionaires might be less likely to announce that their inventions will cause mass unemployment if they felt

Students listen as Valerie Ziegler speaks during a session on digital literacy at Abraham Lincoln High School in San Francisco, Nov. 7, 2025. “One recent report found that only 18% of Gen Zers feel hopeful about AI, and almost half say the risks outweigh the benefits,” Michelle Goldberg writes. (Minh Connors/The New York Times)

constrained by public sentiment. The fact that they don’t shows how broken America’s democratic feedback loop has become.

Schmidt, of all people, should understand why many are repelled by this increasingly intrusive technology. Last year, he was a writer of a Times Opinion essay about how Americans “see AI as a nuisance in their daily lives,” even as it’s become more of a useful consumer tool in China. “It’s paramount that more people outside Silicon Valley feel the beneficial impact of AI,” he wrote. That can be accomplished only by political action, not hectoring. “Find a way to say yes,” Schmidt told the graduates in Arizona. Their boos were their answer: No.

PRSO bassoonist’s death recalls Romanian parallel in Casals 2005

The opening of the 70th annual Casals Festival on Saturday at 7 p.m. coupled with the death of a musician from the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra (PRSO), brings back an eerie echo of the final 2005 Casals concert and the sudden passing of a Romanian musical figure.

In a strong sense of deja vu, this year’s event has been plunged into mourning with the death last Friday of Ion Serbanescu, a longtime PRSO assistant principal bassoonist from Romania.

The loss, which came unexpectedly, has brought the local music com-

munity bittersweet memories of the closing concert of the same festival two decades past, when world famous conductor Sergiu Comissiona died of a heart attack in Oklahoma just three days before his scheduled appearance here. The event to honor Comissiona’s Romania as well as that of his countrywoman Elena Sherbanesco’s 50th birthday, went on exactly as planned, thanks to the intervention of superstar cellist YoYo Ma -interpreting Czech composer Antonin Dvorak’s cello concerto, the undisputed king of all cello concertos and a great tribute to the fallen conductor -- and the quick adaptation of young Costa Rican conductor Giancarlo Herrero. George Enescu’s “Romanian Rhapsody” opened the program.

The two composers, one Czech and the other Romanian, had a strong bond in their dedication to folk music, long suppressed by the dominant European cultures so pronounced in German and Austrian composers.

The other offering on that 2005 program was Ludwig van Beethoven’s iconic “Ninth Symphony” with local soloists soprano Hilda Ramos, Ilka López, Antonio Barasorda and Rafael Torrens.

Now, history repeats itself as Serbanescu’s sudden death at age 68 has left his colleagues bereft and scrambling for a replacement.

“’Nelu,’ as everyone called him, had a great effect on the morale of the whole orchestra and was an outstanding musician for over two decades,” said principal bassoonist Adam Havrilla, who shared the small but important section with the musician who had given a half century of his life to orchestras in his native Bucharest (where he trained), East Germany, Denmark and Puerto Rico.

Serbanescu was talented and disciplined from his upbringing. His father, George Serbanescu, was first violinist of the Romanian State Orchestra. Ion got his education in his country and in East Germany.

Underlying the ensemble’s raw grief at Saturday’s concert will be the lack of a vital instrumental element. The absence of a strong assistant principal bassoonist is especially significant because the orchestra under the baton of Mexican con-

ductor Carlos Miguel Prieto will feature a work by 20th-century Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, who relied heavily on lower-register winds.

The show will go on Saturday’s program, whose triple bill of Mexican nationals also includes eminent pianist Jorge Federico Osorio playing the beloved “Emperor Concerto” (Piano Concerto No. 5 in E Flat Major) by Beethoven. The opening work will be the vibrant eight-minute “Antrópolis,” an evocation of Mexican dancehalls by Gabriela Ortiz, a two-time Grammy winner for Best Classical Composition.

The piece recreates four funky night spots of the capital city with spectacular percussion effects some compare to Leonard Bernstein.

“The concert will be dedicated to Ion and I will say a few words, but we won’t dwell on the sadness,” PRSO Musical Director Maximiano Valdés told the STAR.

Romanian conductor Sergiu Comissiona (1928-2005) (Facebook via Historical Orchestra Conductors — Debuts before 1980)

He said the orchestra had done the same last Saturday at a concert in the mountain town of Utuado.

“When we speak [Saturday], Melissa [Santana, director of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and the Corporation of Musical Arts] and I will concentrate on Ion’s many years of outstanding contribution to the orchestra,” he added.

A sister’s tribute and siblings abroad

Retired PRSO violinist Elena Sherbanesco, who anglicized the surname, served as a surrogate mother to her younger brother Ion after the death of their mother, Ioana, in 2015.

Ion’s eldest sibling Dan Serbanescu, once a second violinist in the PRSO, now works in several orchestras in central Florida. Ion’s twin Mariana, the only nonmusician of the four, works in real estate in the same state.

Elena remembers most vividly that Nov. 11, 1957 her mother brought Ion and Mariana home from the hospital.

“We shared so many magic moments since that day,” she recalled, calling her brother “a sophisticated and generous artist, an authentic sovereign soul.”

She said Ion will be missed by his many cousins in Romania, where he visited most summers.

A command of languages and true sense of humor

Rafael Enrique Irizarry, PRSO associate director, praised Ion Serbanescu as an “enviable polyglot” who often corrected their German.

Serbanescu also possessed a sense of humor that was legendary among his colleagues, including Havrilla.

“He would greet us in exaggerated English, and spend hours polishing his instrument, which was especially appreciated during occasional tedious rehearsals,” Havrilla said. “He had a profound effect on our morale as a group and his artistry and dedication will live on.”

Services for Ion Serbanescu will be held Monday at 3:50 p.m., at Celestium Crematory in Carolina, 730 Darsená St., Canóvanillas Industrial Urbanization.

S&P 500 rises as investors focus on Mideast peace hopes as oil prices dip

RICO STOCKS

Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 index closed slightly higher after Thursday’s choppy session as oil prices finished lower and investors hoped for a Middle East peace deal even as the U.S. and Iran appeared to take directly opposing stances over Tehran’s uranium stockpile and control of the Strait of Hormuz.

After spending the morning in the red, stocks clawed their way back to gains in afternoon trading while oil prices shifted from a rally to a decline as investors monitored social media for news on the peace progress. While U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters there had been “some good signs” in

Jason Pride, chief of investment strategy and research at Glenmede, attributed volatility during Thursday’s session to investor reactions to speculation about geopolitics.

“We’re sitting at high levels of valuation partly driven by earnings,” said Pride. “That overshadowed the concerns around Iran but now earnings season is largely over. We’re not going to suddenly get any more good surprises out of earnings, which means that market attention is now back to Iran. The market, on a near-term basis, is going to be finding its way based on rumors or actual announced deals regarding Iran.”

Abodada-Notario

According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 gained 11.54 points, or 0.16%, to end at 7,444.51 points, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 25.82 points, or 0.09%, to 26,296.18. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 278.91 points, or 0.56%, to 50,288.26.

talks with Iran, he also said a diplomatic deal between the U.S. and Iran would be unfeasible if Tehran implemented a tolling system in the Strait of Hormuz, which is a key conduit for oil transportation.

Earlier on Thursday, a Reuters report signaled a hardening stance from Tehran with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei issuing a directive that the uranium should not be sent abroad. However, President Donald Trump said the U.S. will eventually recover Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium - which Washington believes is destined for a nuclear weapon though Tehran says it is intended purely for peaceful purposes.

“The silver lining is that from a market perspective, the fragile ceasefire is still holding. It’s positive there’s still, according to news reports, the possibility of an off-ramp. Oil and market sentiment is very sensitive to every headline,” said Marc Dizard, chief investment officer at Huntington Wealth Management. He added, however: “Nobody knows, except the inner circle in Iran and in the U.S., how much progress is truly being made.”

Investors were also reacting to the latest batch of earnings from big U.S. companies. Walmart shares tumbled after the largest global retailer forecast second-quarter profit below estimates and maintained its annual targets. CFO John David Rainey said consumers were feeling pressure from high fuel prices and that if “elevated cost environment persists, we’d expect somewhat higher retail price inflation in Q2 and the second half of the year.”

Among the S&P 500’s 11 major industry sectors, consumer staples led losses as they were weighed down by Walmart’s fall along with declines in some other retailers that fell in sympathy, including Casey’s General Stores and Costco Wholesale.

Shares of Nvidia, the world’s most valuable company, fell as some investors took profits after the AI heavyweight’s upbeat second-quarter revenue forecast and $80 billion share-repurchase program. Its stock has gained sharply so far this year but the pace of growth has slowed as investors believe Nvidia will face tougher competition from chip rivals including Intel and Advanced Micro Devices going forward.

In economic data, jobless claims fell last week, pointing to continued labor market resilience, giving the U.S. Federal Reserve room to keep its focus on inflation risks.

News of US indictment slow to reach Cubans waiting for a breakthrough

As the news of the U.S. indictment of Raúl Castro, the former president of Cuba on charges of murder, spread across the world, many Cubans were kept in the dark.

Widespread blackouts on the fuelstarved island and spotty phone signals meant word of the new, steep escalation in the U.S. pressure campaign on the Cuban government was slow to reach many of Cuba’s own residents.

Trapped in the vise of a repressive regime and punishing American sanctions, Cubans who caught the news on their dimming smartphones and boxy TV sets split over the legitimacy of the U.S. charges — which accuse Castro of murder and conspiracy in the 1996 downing of two planes, which killed four people, including three Americans.

But many shared a common exhaustion with the status quo.

“This has to change,” said Yoandy Benítez Ramirez, 24, a tobacco factory worker in Havana.

Cubans are facing blackouts, hunger and a health crisis, which worsened after the Trump administration all but cut off Cuba’s oil supplies in January, and many yearn for a breakthrough that might ease their suffering.

The Trump administration used a federal indictment against Nicolás Maduro, the authoritarian leader of Venezuela, as

the pretext to remove him with a raid in January. It is not known whether the U.S. military is moving toward a similar operation in Cuba. But many Cubans wondered whether the indictment was just another move in a painful, prolonged U.S. pressure campaign, or the catalyst for a more muscular U.S. intervention.

“I don’t think a military intervention is the solution, but if that’s what it takes, well — what we need is for this to end once and for all, right now,” Yasiel Lugones, 27, a delivery driver, said as he sat on his motorbike in Havana.

He said he hoped for a comprehensive dismantling of Cuba’s entire ruling class.

“The whole leadership, the entire Castro family,” he said.

“This is an endless cycle. We’ve been dealing with the same thing for over 60 years,” Lugones said. “They spend their time there acting as if we were a piece of property, passing it to you, to you, to you, and they have to leave now. We don’t want them.”

The Cuban government immediately condemned the Justice Department’s indictment Wednesday. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel called the indictment “a political action, lacking any legal basis,” and said it was being used to build the case for potential military aggression against the island.

Some Cubans called the accusations illegitimate, arguing that Cuba had acted in self-defense after its airspace was repeatedly violated by the aid group that organized the flights, Brothers to the Rescue.

“Cuba took the right decision to shoot them down,” said Frank Alejandro Font, 24, a mechanical engineer in Havana.

He also cautioned about the risk of a foreign military raid.

“Many Cubans are asking for an intervention,” he said, but warned, “there is always collateral damage.”

Rumors had spread in Cuba in the days preceding the announcement that something was going to happen Wednesday. Would the U.S. conduct a military intervention? Would a large protest form in the country? Young Cubans grimly joked with

older Cubans that they should be ready to pull out the old Soviet rifle they’ve got stashed away.

The worsening conditions in Cuba have led to a growing number of protests, but experts say the demonstrations are unlikely to grow into a popular uprising that threatens the regime.

Reliable polling is hard to find in Cuba.

A recent survey by a Cuban news website, El Toque, which gathered over 40,000 answers, found that about 56% of Cubans who reside in the island, and nearly 70% of those abroad, would support a military intervention by the U.S.

While the results of the survey — which gathered answers from voluntary participants — could not be considered as a representative poll, its findings likely did reflect the exhaustion of many Cubans, said Michael J. Bustamante, a professor of history and chair in Cuban and Cuban American Studies at the University of Miami.

“I don’t think it means that Cubans relish the idea of a foreign power coming in and fixing their problems,” Bustamante said. “But I think people are at such a level of exasperation, desperation, they’ll take help for from wherever they can get it.”

Raúl Cardoso, a 70-year-old Cuban retiree, said whatever the decision by U.S. leaders, they should just hurry up and make it.

“If they are going to go in, they should come in,” Cardoso said. “And if not, they should stop talking so much.”

The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and its escort warships entered the southern Caribbean Sea on Wednesday and will remain in the region for at least a few days as part of the Trump administration’s campaign to pressure the Cuban government, according to the military’s Southern Command and a U.S. official.

Right now, the administration intends to use the Nimitz, and its wing of fighter jets, as a show of force, not as a platform for major military operations, as the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford did during the commando raid to seize President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela in January, said the U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters.

The Nimitz has spent the past several weeks sailing along the South American coast on a previously scheduled

training deployment, in recent days conducting exercises with the Brazilian navy.

Still, it hardly seemed coincidental that the Pentagon timed the arrival of the carrier into the southern Caribbean on the same day that the Justice Department announced charges against Raúl Castro, the 94-year-old former president of Cuba.

“Welcome to the Caribbean, Nimitz Carrier Strike Group!” the Southern Command posted on social media Wednesday. “U.S.S. Nimitz has proven its combat prowess across the globe, ensuring stability and defending democracy from the Taiwan Strait to the Arabian Gulf.”

Much of the firepower the Pentagon amassed in the Caribbean for the Maduro raid left the region soon after to form the backbone of American might in the Iran war. But the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima remains in the region, according to the Navy.

Uganda restricts travel with Congo over Ebola outbreak

Uganda will tightly restrict travel to and from Congo because of an Ebola outbreak, Ugandan officials announced Thursday, as health workers in the region rush to stop the virus from spreading.

Uganda’s Health Ministry said that all flights to and from Congo would be temporarily suspended and that the measure would take effect in 48 hours.

The ministry also said that Uganda was temporarily suspending all cross-border travel with Congo on ferries, buses and other forms of public transportation for four weeks. It temporarily suspended cultural celebrations and commemorations “that attract big numbers of participants along the DRC-Uganda Border,” the ministry added.

The Ebola outbreak has been declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization. In the six days since the outbreak was declared, the number of suspected infections has risen to nearly 600, including 139 deaths, according to the WHO.

The Ugandan authorities’ announcement came as the virus appeared to spread to a third province in Congo that is far from the center of the outbreak.

The outbreak is centered in Congo’s northeastern Ituri province, and cases have also been reported about 350 miles from there, in Goma, a city in North Kivu province. On Thursday, a 28-year-old was reported to have died from Ebola in South Kivu, a province controlled by M23, a rebel group. M23 said

in a statement on social media that lab testing had confirmed the case, and Congo’s central government confirmed it.

The U.S. State Department said this week that it was sending $23 million to Congo and Uganda that would go toward protective equipment and other resources. On Tuesday, it announced that it was funding up to 50 clinics and covering “associated front-line costs” in the two countries as part of a broader response to the outbreak.

The department also said that the treatment centers it was funding would be “rapidly deployed” and were meant to “strengthen outbreak containment.”

The announcement followed criticism of the Trump administration by international health experts, who have argued that cuts to foreign aid and the closure of the U.S. Agency for International Development have made it harder for the WHO and countries affected by Ebola to combat the outbreak.

But there was some confusion Thursday about how that aid would be deployed. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which will administer the funding, could not be reached for comment.

Hussein Twaibu, a spokesperson for Congo’s Health Ministry, said Thursday that American and Congolese officials had met Thursday and that the United States had pledged $13 million to help fight the Ebola outbreak. The funding would be used to set up mobile clinics and bolster $20 million that Congo’s government has set aside for its own response, Twaibu said.

But the top civil servant in Uganda’s Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine, said in an interview that the government was not aware

of the pledge. It was not immediately clear whether those $13 million were part of the $23 million previously pledged by the United States.

In Uganda, where two cases have been confirmed, the Health Ministry said Thursday that it had not had any communication with the United States about establishing treatment centers.

“I don’t know the ones they are talking about,” Atwine said. “Maybe that is their future plan.”

The confusion came as countries ramped up efforts to fight the outbreak.

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the public health body of the African Union, urged member states to support

those efforts. South Africa’s government has pledged $2.5 million. Britain said Thursday that it had set aside 20 million pounds (more than $26 million) to support the WHO and nongovernmental organizations.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said Thursday that its volunteers were going door to door among communities in eastern Congo, providing information about the virus.

“Families are also being advised not to touch or wash the bodies of suspected Ebola victims, as this remains one of the most common routes of transmission during outbreaks,” the organization said in a statement. “On the first day of activities, Red Cross volunteers reached 645 families.”

Western Uganda borders Congo’s Ituri province, the center of the outbreak, and many people cross that frontier each day. But Ugandan authorities maintain that their country is safe and prepared to deal with the virus.

In a statement on social platform X on Thursday, the chief government spokesperson, Alan Kasujja, said the only person being treated for the virus in Uganda was a Congolese national. An additional Congolese person had died of Ebola in Uganda after coming to the country for treatment.

“No Ugandan person or person living in Uganda has Ebola,” Kasujja said.

Many tourists undertake treks to look at mountain gorillas in southwestern Uganda, near the borders of Congo and Rwanda. The country’s tourism board said this week that while people should observe standard hygiene practices, Uganda remained “safe, open and welcoming for tourism, business and investment.”

US-bound flight diverted to Canada because of Ebola restrictions

An Air France flight bound for Detroit was diverted to Montreal on Wednesday after it was denied permission to land in the United States because a passenger was from Congo, where an Ebola outbreak is underway.

Flight 378, which took off from Paris, was diverted after the Congolese national “was denied entry into the United States,” the airline said in a statement Thursday.

“There was no medical emergency on board,” it added.

The Trump administration Monday closed U.S. borders to anyone who had recently been in Congo, Uganda or South Sudan, citing the Ebola outbreak.

The State Department has “strongly” urged Americans not to travel to those three countries. It also announced Thursday that all U.S.-bound passengers — including American citizens and permanent residents — who were in those countries within 21 days of their arrival in the United States must only enter through Washington Dulles International Airport for enhanced screening.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed that it had prohibited the Air France flight from landing in Detroit. “Air France boarded a passenger from the Democratic Republic of Congo in error on a flight to the United States,” it said in a statement. “Due to entry restrictions put in place to reduce the risk of the Ebola virus, the passenger should not have boarded the plane.”

The agency did not immediately respond to a question about the passenger’s travel history.

The World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak a “public health emergency of international concern” on Sunday. It is suspected to have caused more than 130 deaths and nearly 600 infections, but there is

little risk of it developing into a pandemic, the WHO’s director-general said Wednesday. The entry restrictions imposed by the Trump administration Monday do not apply to American citizens or U.S. service members. The restrictions are to be in effect for 30 days, at which point the administration could decide to extend them.

Leones throttle Atléticos at home

The Leones of Ponce defeated the Atléticos of San Germán 88-65 in the only scheduled Superior National Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) league game on Wednesday night at Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.

The Leones were led by Jalen Crutcher, who finished with 26 points. Brady Manek contributed 18 points and nine rebounds, while Jezreel de Jesús added 17 points.

George Hamilton scored 17 points for San Germán. Ponce led 20-13 after the opening quarter and never trailed after that.

By halftime, the hosts held a 43-35 lead, and after three periods the score was 62-50 in favor of the Leones.

In the fourth quarter, a three-pointer by Crutcher gave Ponce a 20-point cushion -- 76-56 -- with 4:13 left to play. A short while later, Fernando Caballero completed a three-point play (a basket plus a free throw) that pushed the score to 86-62, marking the largest lead of the night.

Juan Medina earns Double-A Manager of the Year award

Juan Medina, manager of the Patrulleros of San Sebastián, has been named Manager of the Year for the 2026 season of the Double-A Superior Baseball League.

“I give thanks to God, who is the one who grants us the strength and wisdom to be here,” Medina said earlier this week in a written statement. “I also congratulate my colleagues who were on the shortlist for Manager of the Year.”

The former national team catcher garnered 96 points in the voting process -- conducted by journalists, play-by-play announcers and color commentators -- which was coordinated by the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation. Antonio Vega of Manatí finished second with 60 points, followed by Wilfredo González of Maunabo with 58, Roberto López of Las Piedras with 42, and Rogelio Negrón Jr. of Juana Díaz with 36.

Eduardo Dávila of the Criollos of Caguas won the award in 2025.

Medina, who also was selected to manage in the All-Star Game for the second-straight year, led San Sebastián to the best record in Double-A during the regular season, posting a 19-1 mark.

The Patrulleros became the first team to reach 19 wins in a 20-game season, having previously finished with a 16-4 record in 2025 under Medina’s guidance.

“I never gave any thought to the record this year,” the manager

said. “It was just taking it game by game -- playing hard.”

Medina added: “I can tell you that the team worked for this; we worked to have a good season, and thank God, we did.”

The San Sebastián manager dedicated the award “to my parents, who have never left my side, and to my daughter, who has attended every one of my games.”

Jadiel Sánchez named Double-A Rookie of the Year

Jadiel Sánchez, an outfielder for the Poetas of Juana Díaz, has been named Rookie of the Year for the 2026 season of the Double-A Superior Baseball League.

“I am incredibly grateful,” Sánchez said in a written statement. “This is news that truly leaves a mark on you. Considering the daily work one puts in, this really means a great deal.”

The 25-year-old player, a native of Arroyo, garnered 115 points in the voting conducted by sports journalists, play-by-play announcers, and commentators.

Luisiel Rivera of Maunabo finished second with 68 points, followed by Dilan Rosario of Gurabo with 65, Julio Cajigas of Vega Baja with 35, and Giulliano Allende of Maunabo with 20. Antonio Brown of the Leones of Ponce won the award in 2025.

Arsenal conquers Premier League for the first time in 22 years, edging out City

For the first time in 22 years, Arsenal is the Premier League champion.

The title race looked poised to come down to the Premier League’s final day Sunday. But after Arsenal beat Burnley 1-0 on Monday, Manchester City needed to beat Bournemouth on Tuesday to keep pace. Instead, City could manage only a draw.

Arsenal’s win Monday gave it 82 points; after Tuesday’s result, the highest tally City can reach is 81.

Arsenal had led the Premier League standings nearly the entire season. The team has won 25 of its 37 league matches, drawing seven and losing five, with the final match to come Sunday against Crystal Palace.

After a 2-1 defeat to City at Etihad Stadium in April, which put City 3 points behind Arsenal with a game in hand, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said: “It’s a new league now. They have a game in hand. We have 3 points of advantage and five games to play, so everything is still to play for. So we know how much we want it, and we’re not going to stop and we’re going to go again, that’s for sure.”

Arsenal won its next four league games without conceding a goal (with three of these matches ending at 1-0), while City’s 3-3 draw away to Everton this month was a major blow to its title hopes.

Pep Guardiola is now set to leave Manchester City at the end of the season, and without having won the Premier League in each of the past two seasons, as Liverpool was crowned the champion in the 2024-25 campaign.

Arteta is waiting until the season’s full conclusion to negotiate a new contract with Arsenal, though early talks between his representatives and Arsenal have begun. His current deal expires in 2027.

At 44 years and 54 days old, the Spaniard Arteta becomes the third-youngest manager to win the Premier League, after Jose Mourinho, who won the league at the ages of 42 and 43 for Chelsea, in 2005 and 2006.

Arteta first took charge of Arsenal in December 2019, initially named head coach before a title change to manager in August 2020. This is still his first job as a senior soccer manager.

This moment may stand as one of the biggest collective sighs of relief in Arsenal’s history.

Three successive second-place finishes only heightened the expectation, intensity and stress of the club.

Its finish was a surprise in the 2022-23 season, but Arsenal showed consistency in each year since then. It has spent 557 days on top of the league across the past four seasons (at least 200 more than any other club), and has earned 329 points in that time, tied with City for the most of any Premier League club.

It is important to note that Arteta and Arsenal have had to evolve to finally get over the line. This month, he cited “resilience” and “adaptability” as key to the finish, and for all involved to be rewarded for those qualities at long last will earn them special places in the history books of Arsenal.

Arsenal still has a chance for another title this month, in the Champions League final May 30 against Paris St.-Germain, which eliminated Arsenal in last season’s semifinals.
