Abandonment of older adults in island hospitals up 45% from 2017

Study spotlights socioeconomic factors, challenges traditional view that families make deliberate decision not to care for their elders

The number of cases of older adults abandoned in hospitals has increased by 45% in Puerto Rico since 2017, according to a study published by Medicina/Salud Publica.

An investigation led by social worker and gerontologist Erika Colón Ortega found that the abandonment of older adults in hospitals is often tied less to deliberate decisions by families than to economic hardship, inadequate housing, social isolation and a lack of support networks.

“At times, the patients were alone and had no relatives to support them,” Colón Ortega said, according to Medicina/ Salud Pública. “Not only because relatives were not present, but because they did not exist in these people’s lives.”

The study challenges the traditional view of abandonment as an intentional act. Colón Ortega said many families are willing to care for their loved ones but lack the financial resources or suitable housing to support people discharged from hospitals with disabilities or long-term care needs.

“The reality is that support resources for care may be available, but they do not have the financial resources or housing facilities to care for a person with a disability after a hospital discharge,” she said.

The research also identified social isolation as a major factor, especially when older adults need help after hospitalization. The problem became more visible after Hurricane Maria in 2017 and later during the COVID-19 pandemic,

both of which exposed vulnerabilities linked to Puerto Rico’s aging population.

According to data cited by the researcher, about 700 cases were documented in 2017. For fiscal year 2024-2025, the island Family Department reported 1,018 cases of older adults abandoned in medical-hospital institutions. Colón Ortega noted that current statistics do not distinguish how many cases were intentional and how many stemmed from social or economic conditions.

One recommendation from the study is for government agencies to collect more detailed information about the causes of the phenomenon, the social determinants that influence it and the costs it creates for the hospital system.

The issue comes as Puerto Rico undergoes a significant demographic transformation. Older adults currently make up 31% of the population, and projections indicate that figure could reach 40% by 2050.

“We have more older people than the rest of the population,” Colón Ortega said.

That scenario, combined with the outmigration of relatives off the island and the increase in people aging alone, has brought the problem into sharper focus. Beyond the logistical challenges of hospital discharge, the study highlights the emotional impact on older adults who remain hospitalized without a support network.

Colón Ortega said many patients are aware of their situation and experience the uncertainty of having no place to return to and no one who can take responsibility for their care. In other cases, patients have neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, which adds complexity to their cases.

The research also found that these cases place an additional burden on hospital social workers, who must manage administrative duties while handling complex cases involving older adults who cannot be discharged because of a lack of family or community support.

Among the study’s main recommendations is reactivating the implementation committee for Law 121, legislation that protects the rights of older adults in Puerto Rico. The proposal seeks to ensure that agencies work in a coordinated way to develop comprehensive solutions instead of handling cases in a fragmented manner.

Colón Ortega also called for changing the public narrative around abandonment and focusing on the social determinants of health that shape well-being in old age. For her, the solution requires participation from all sectors of society, not only the hospital system.

Poverty sharply increases school dropout rates among students with disabilities

Research by a University of Puerto Rico professor has found that poverty sharply increases the risk of school dropout among students with specific learning disabilities, especially when economic hardship and disability overlap.

The study, published in the Journal of Disability Policy Studies, analyzed more than 2.4 million student observations from Puerto Rico’s public school system between 2015 and 2021.

The research was conducted by Dr. José Caraballo-Cueto, a professor at the Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. It found that poverty is the leading factor associated with dropout risk among students with specific learning disabilities, increasing the likelihood that they will leave school by 2.5 times.

The article, titled “Is There a Mediating Factor Between Specific Learning Disabilities and School Dropouts?,” examines how disability, poverty and school dropout interact in Puerto Rico’s public education system.

Using panel logistic regression models with random effects, the study reviewed

student-level data from 2015 through 2021, making it one of the most comprehensive analyses of the issue conducted in Puerto Rico.

One of the study’s central findings is that having a specific learning disability, on its own, does not significantly increase a student’s likelihood of dropping out. The risk rises substantially, however, when that disability is combined with poverty, which emerged as the most significant factor in the statistical model.

The study also found that Hurricane Maria and shortcomings in the institutional response increased the probability of school dropout by 85% during the academic year after the disaster. Male students faced an 18% higher risk of dropping out, while each additional year of age raised the probability by 21%, underscoring the vulnerability of adolescents.

During the period studied, 33,704 students dropped out of Puerto Rico’s public school system, a number equivalent to the enrollment of about 95 average-sized schools.

“Our results demonstrate that the main challenge is not the learning disability itself, but rather the surrounding socioeconomic conditions,” Caraballo-Cueto said. “When poverty is combined with a specific learning disability,

Dr.

educational opportunities are significantly reduced. If we want to decrease school dropout rates, public policies must simultaneously address economic inequality and strengthen

educational support for these students.”

The research notes that Puerto Rico is a particularly important setting for studying the issue because of its high poverty levels and the lasting effects of major disruptions such as Hurricane Maria. During the study period, about 12.8% of students in the public system had a specific learning disability, and roughly 79% lived in poverty. In addition, 20.4% of Puerto Rico’s adult population does not hold a high school diploma, twice the U.S. average.

Based on the findings, Caraballo-Cueto recommends policies that address both economic conditions and educational supports. The recommendations include strengthening poverty-reduction programs that help families enter the workforce, creating school programs that encourage adolescents to remain enrolled before reaching 11th grade, reducing student-teacher ratios, evaluating psychological and educational therapies for students with learning disabilities, and ensuring that disaster preparedness plans protect the continuity of educational services.

The study offers empirical evidence for policies aimed at reducing dropout rates and promoting more equitable education for students facing heightened social and economic vulnerability.

Justice Dept. charges 16 in fraud scheme at Guaynabo condominium

Justice

announced Thursday that the agency’s Economic Crimes Division has filed criminal charges against 16 individuals involved in a scheme to misappropriate $30,000 in insurance checks belonging to apartment owners in Plaza del Palmar Condominium in Guaynabo. According to the investigation, the condominium administrators, Víctor Emanuel Vázquez Ortiz and Yessika Delimar Mártir Irizarry, devised the scheme and altered 16 checks issued to condominium owners as insurance payments for damages caused by Hurricane Maria.

The fraud involved the defendants adding the names of 14 other people to the checks so they could cash them. The events occurred between July and September 2021, according to the investigation by Jessica I. Pizarro Cruz, a police officer assigned to the Robbery, Ex-

tortion, Property Crimes, Assault, and Missing Persons Investigations Division of the Criminal Investigations Corps of the Police in Bayamón.

Prosecutor Teresita del Rosario Morales

Arteaga filed a total of 78 charges for fraud, aggravated misappropriation, possession, and falsification of documents under the Puerto Rico Penal Code. Vázquez Ortiz faces 16 charges, while Mártir Irizarry faces 32 charges. In addition, the prosecutor filed 30 charges against Hilda Hernández Rosa, José Miguel Rivera Hernández, Kitchell Marie Vargas Rodríguez, Sasha Maylin Fernández Cruz, Angelie Noemí Febus Figueroa, Bernardo Joshua Rodríguez Parrilla, Juan José Reyes Hernaiz, Juan José Correa Colón, Alexander Dimas Díaz Pérez, Rafael Acosta Rodríguez, Daniel Luna Osorio, Carlos Pantoja Mendoza, Alex Joel Pedraza Padilla and Rafael Izaac Rivera Luna.

“Taking advantage of funds intended to compensate people who had already suffered the devastating consequences of a hurricane

is reprehensible conduct,” the justice secretary said. “It is even more serious when this purpose is carried out through a fraud scheme designed to falsify documents, divert resources, and illegally appropriate other people’s money. At the Department of Justice, through our Economic Crimes Division, we rigorously investigate and prosecute these types of crimes so that those who resort to deception and forgery to enrich themselves at the expense of others are held accountable before the law.”

Judge Rafael Parés Quiñones of the Bayamón Court of First Instance found probable cause on all charges brought by the prosecution against the defendants and set a total bail of $704,000.

It should be noted that charges against five of the 16 defendants had to be filed in absentia, as they failed to appear in court despite being summoned in accordance with due process of law. Consequently, the judge ordered the arrest of Mártir Irizarry, Acosta Rodríguez, Luna

Osorio, Pantoja Mendoza and Rivera Luna. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 14.

US Attorney Muldrow to resign effective Tuesday

U.S. Attorney W. Stephen Muldrow will step down as U.S. Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico next Tuesday, July 7, ending a Justice Department career that spans over 37 years.

In announcing his resignation, Muldrow described the post as “the honor of my professional life,” saying he was grateful to have served both Puerto Rico and the United States.

Muldrow thanked the attorneys and professional staff of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, saying he felt “truly fortunate” to have worked alongside “some of the finest men and women in the Department.” He said he was proud of the

office’s work and confident it would continue.

He also credited federal, state and local law enforcement partners, whom he described as “courageous and steadfast,” for risking their safety to protect communities. Muldrow also expressed appreciation for community support and thanked President Donald Trump for nominating him in 2019, the Senate for confirming him, and President Joe Biden for allowing him to continue serving during his administration.

Reflecting on his tenure, Muldrow said he was guided by the belief that “the pillars of our government must be built like a city upon a hill.” He said that principle shaped his work to uphold the mission of the U.S.

Attorney’s Office.

That mission, he said, begins with justice.

“Society’s first duty is justice,” Muldrow said. “Our mission is to ensure the fair and impartial administration of justice for all.” He said the office remains committed to enforcing the law, protecting public safety and defending U.S. interests “against all threats, domestic and foreign,” while adhering to high professional and ethical standards.

Muldrow closed his statement by noting the approaching 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, offering blessings to the people of Puerto Rico and the United States.

Supreme Court dismisses complaint against Ferraiuoli Hornedo

The Puerto Rico Supreme Court has ordered the dismissal of a complaint filed against attorney Verónica Ferraiuoli Hornedo in connection with the case of Sally Priester v. Puerto Rico Department of Health, bringing the matter to a close.

“Having examined the complaint, as well as the other filings subsequently submitted, the Court orders the complaint archived,” the island’s highest court said in its official resolution.

Following the decision, Ferraiuoli Hornedo said the ruling confirmed what she had previously maintained: that she rejected any allegation of improper conduct in the case or any other matter.

“The Honorable Supreme Court has now confirmed it, with the full dismissal of the complaint filed,” Ferraiuoli Hornedo said. She added that in nearly 30 years as a licensed attorney, she had never before received a complaint against her.

Ferraiuoli Hornedo described the complaint as politically motivated, saying it was “a political attack” intended to harm both her and Gov. Jenniffer González Colón’s administration.

She said that after being appointed secretary of state, she asked the U.S. Court of Appeals in Boston, where the case was pending at the time, to allow her to withdraw from representing Dr. Víctor Ramos Otero. The request, she said, was made in keeping with her ethical responsibilities and without affecting Ramos Otero’s rights in the case.

Ferraiuoli Hornedo said the appeals court granted the request while the case was stayed and submitted for adjudication. She said her name continued to appear on the District Court docket only because the notification system kept her listed as counsel in the historical record from when the case was filed in 2022, not because she was actively representing Ramos Otero, who is now serving as the island’s health secretary.

Ferraiuoli Hornedo also criticized what she described as the spread of false and defamatory information about the matter, saying it had been published in a distorted way and without first seeking her response.

“Enough of so many false and malicious attacks,” she said.

The government efficiency coordinator said her focus would remain on carrying out the public policy agenda of the González Colón administration and working for the welfare of Puerto Rico.

With the Supreme Court’s determination, Ferraiuoli Hornedo said the matter is “totally concluded, clarified and closed,” adding that she would make no further statements on the issue.

DNER rangers patrol Vacía Talega beach in Loíza after possible shark sighting

The Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) Secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez said Thursday that he activated Ranger Corps personnel at Vacía Talega beach in Loíza after photos of a shark-like silhouette in the water were circulated.

“This morning we received a series of photographs that are circulating on social networks showing what appears to be a silhouette that could represent a shark in the area of the Vacía Talega beach,” the official said in a written statement.

Quiles noted that the beach is one of the most

visited in the northeast region and has a high presence of bathers during the summer months. Members of the Ranger Corps arrived in the area at 10 a.m. to assess the coast and interview beachgoers, the DNER chief said.

“It was determined that, at this time, there is no fish similar to the one seen in the photographs, neither on the shore of Vacía Talega beach, or the surrounding coast,” Quiles added.

During the intervention, the rangers guided bathers on the importance of moving away and avoiding interaction if they observe such fish.

A group of three rangers assigned to the Piñones Maritime Unit were to continue monitoring the area on Thursday.

Immigrant arrests surge to 10,000 in 5 days as ICE clamps down

Federal immigration officials have detained more than 10,000 people in the last five days, a major surge that has stemmed from a push within Immigration and Customs Enforcement to increase arrest rates.

Agency leaders in recent days ordered top ICE officials to focus more of their officers’ efforts on picking up immigrants they want to deport, according to documents obtained by The New York Times and interviews with federal officials. ICE officers have arrested people at check-ins, with immigration authorities, during traffic stops and on the street. The push has apparently yielded results, with recent arrest numbers roughly doubling from the 1,000 picked up each day earlier this year.

ICE officials were told that the White House wanted an increase in arrests, according to three officials with knowledge of the conversations. One of the officials said that it was unclear how long the pace could continue, but that ICE officials had been told that 2,000 arrests a day was the new standard for enforcement.

The surge has occurred without the fanfare of highly visible operations last year, in which officials announced their intentions ahead of time to target cities, including Chicago and Los Angeles, and send officers pouring into the streets. Markwayne Mullin, the homeland security secretary, pledged to mount a quieter enforcement campaign following the chaos of a monthlong operation in Minnesota, where federal officers killed two U.S. citizens.

The rise in arrests suggests that President Donald Trump is determined to meet his pledge of mass deportations, a goal that is popular among his conservative supporters but that

has fueled a political backlash amid the administration’s heavy-handed tactics. The Trump administration has promised more aggressive actions, particularly after the Supreme Court in recent days expanded the president’s power to set federal immigration policy, but undercut his effort to eliminate birthright citizenship for the children of immigrants in the country illegally and visitors.

“Our message is clear: If you come to our country illegally, we will find you, we will arrest you and we will deport you,” Lauren Bis, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, said in a statement.

Word of an uptick in arrests has started to trickle out, sowing fear in immigrant communities and among advocates already on edge after the Supreme Court ruled that Trump could end deportation protections for people from disaster- and war-torn countries under the Temporary Protected Status program.

In recent days, ICE officers have launched an intense push to ramp up arrests. Arrests topped out Saturday when authorities detained more than 2,400 people, according to documents obtained by the Times. The detention population inside ICE facilities has jumped nearly 4,000, to more than 63,000 in the agency’s custody as of Tuesday, according to internal documents.

In emails to ICE personnel, agency leaders applauded the latest numbers.

“I want to personally thank each of you for your extraordinary efforts this past weekend,” Marcos Charles, the head of ICE’s deportation wing, wrote this week. “Through your dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to our mission, enforcement and removal operations achieved remarkable

operational results.”

Top ICE officials were told to make sure that as many officers as possible were working seven days a week, and to put 80% of their officers on arrest operations, according to two U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal conversations. Top supervisors were expected to be working closely on the operations as well.

Last year, Stephen Miller, Trump’s deputy chief of staff, set a goal of 3,000 arrests a day

for the agency, a figure it was not able to hit. Since then, the agency has hired thousands of new officers and has had its budget increased by billions of dollars for the enforcement surge.

Across the country, immigration lawyers and advocates have reported an uptick in enforcement.

In South Texas, Sister Letty Ugboaja, a Nigerian nun, was arrested on her way to church on Sunday morning, according to Sister Norma Pimentel, her colleague. Ugboaja is a local nurse who also helps at a parish in the region. Pimentel called local leaders after learning of the arrest, and congressional officials soon got involved and pushed for her release.

On Sunday, she was let go from ICE custody, and Pimentel was there to greet her.

Pimentel said that Ugboaja was distraught upon her release.

“It took her awhile to be able to talk — she was crying,” she said.

In southern Florida, attorneys have been on alert. Cindy Blandon, an immigration attorney in Miami, said that one of her clients, a Nicaraguan father of two children, had an immigration court hearing set for 2027, but was arrested by ICE on Monday during a routine check-in.

And in Utah, Ysabel Lonazco, an immigration attorney, has noticed an uptick as well. She has spoken to several clients, including a man who was driving when he was picked up by the agency for overstaying his visa this weekend.

“It sets further fear in the community,” she said. “People don’t want to leave their houses. They are afraid to drive to do their grocery shopping. They are just terrified with these detentions.”

New York ties temperature record as heat wave stifles eastern US

Aggressive heat swept across the New York region as sweltering weather stifled the Northeast on Thursday, disrupting travel and prompting emergency measures as states took precautions against hazardous levels of heat and humidity before a holiday weekend.

The temperature in New York’s Central Park reached 100 degrees by 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service, the first time it was that hot there since July 18, 2012. It also tied a record for July 2, as it was the first time the temperature in the park hit 100 on that date since 1966.

Some 163 million people — from Missouri to Maine and south to Mississippi — live in areas that were expected to experience dangerous heat Thursday, according to the weather service. Much of the weather that scorched the Midwest spilled over into the Northeast, sending “heat risk” forecasts in major cities — including New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Atlanta — into the most extreme risk category through Saturday.

Temperatures in those cities were hovering around 100 by noon Thursday, with several daily records at risk of falling.

Heat indexes — measures of how hot the air feels based on temperature and humidity — are surging across the eastern United States, meaning heat cramps or heat exhaustion are likely, and heat stroke is possible, with prolonged exposure or physical activity.

A weather station in Brooklyn, New York, recorded a heat index of 109, a

threshold now fairly widespread across the East Coast.

In much of the Northeast, the temperature is not expected to dip much below 80 on Thursday and Friday night. By Saturday, many people will likely be facing the third or fourth consecutive day of stern warnings to avoid being outside in the hottest parts of the day.

Temperature-related conditions disrupted rail travel along parts of the Northeast Corridor. Local officials urged people to stay indoors, in air conditioning and to check on their neighbors.

been the hottest on record.

— Cooling off: The extreme heat threatens the stability of electrical grids across the eastern United States. Cities and towns in many parts of the country have opened libraries, senior centers and other air-conditioned spaces. Experts urged residents to stay hydrated, plan their days around the heat and to know the warning signs of heat illness.

— When will it end?: For many, the heat wave will start to ebb Sunday, as the heat dome responsible starts to weaken. Many of the most extreme heat warnings will have passed, but dangerous heat is likely to remain across parts of the Washington metro area, Virginia and the Carolinas.

Here’s what else to know.

— Why it’s hot: The meteorological phenomenon causing the extreme heat is a sprawling high pressure system, also known as a heat dome. Like a lid on a boiling pot, heat domes trap the air beneath them, pushing warm air toward the ground that, as it sinks, compresses and becomes much hotter.

— Global warming: While tying a single heat wave to climate change requires extensive analysis, scientists say that heat waves have grown longer, hotter and more frequent. The past 11 years have

250th anniversary of the founding of the United States COMMUNITY PERSPECTIVES

Puerto Rico — time to celebrate!

The year 2026 holds great historical significance for our nation, marking the 250th anniversary of its founding in 1775. Given the importance of this event, impactful cultural activities have been organized -- particularly in the capital, Washington, D.C. -- that will go down in history.

Puerto Rico, too, has cause for celebration.

Puerto Rico was acquired by the United States in 1898 under the Treaty of Paris. Since the signing of the Treaty, Puerto Rico has held the constitutional status of a United States territory, subject to Article IV, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution -- that is, subject to the authority of Congress.

The treaty allowed Spanish citizens residing on the island to either retain their citizenship or renounce it and become American nationals under the custody and jurisdiction of the United States. Over 99% of the inhabitants renounced their Spanish citizenship and applied to become American nationals. The U.S. acquisition of Puerto Rico initiated a process of assimilation and government organization modeled on the republican form found at the national and state

levels -- comprising executive, legislative, and judicial branches -- and structured on a federalist basis: One nation, two flags.

On July 28, 1898 -- three days after U.S. troops landed in Guánica, Puerto Rico -- Gen. Nelson A. Miles, commander of the expeditionary force, proclaimed:

‘‘In the course of the war waged by the people of the United States against the Kingdom of Spain -- in the name of liberty, justice, and humanity -- its military forces have come to occupy the island of Puerto Rico. They come bearing the flag of liberty, inspired by noble purposes …

They bring you the pledge of a free people, whose greatest strength is justice and humanity for all who live within its fold …’’

The United States of America has a federalist government, constitutionally designed by the nation’s Founding Fathers to ensure that states remained internally independent while a central government held national sovereignty, and to guarantee that the same rights applied to all citizens.

This political structure was eloquently explained by Justice Kennedy in the case United States v. Thornton: ‘‘... In my view, however, it is well settled that the whole people of the United States asserted their political identity and unity of purpose when they created the federal system. … Federalism was our Nation’s own discovery. The Framers split the atom of sovereignty. It was the genius of their idea that our citizens would have two political capacities, one state and one federal, each protected from incursion by the other. The resulting Constitution created a legal system unprecedented in form and design, establishing two orders of government, each with its own characteristics and its own set of mutual rights and obligations regarding the people who sustain it and are governed by it’’ (Thornton – 514 U.S. 779, 1995).

As we shall see, our federalist system has been gradually implemented in Puerto Rico over the years -- since 1898 -- assimilating Puerto Rico to the status of a state:

* In 1917, residents of Puerto Rico were granted U.S. citizenship by their own free and voluntary choice, and after 1941 by birth, as provided by Congress through the enactment of laws to that effect. To date, 3.2 million U.S. citizens reside in Puerto Rico, and 5.5 million have moved to the mainland, where they have worked and continue to work in building our nation, and where they enjoy freedom of movement within the Nation.

* Since 1917, Puerto Rican U.S. citizens have demonstrated their loyalty to the United States of America and to democracy by serving with dedication and honor in all armed conflicts in our country’s armed

As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its founding, Puerto Rico, too, has cause for celebration, notes contributing STAR columnist Gregorio Igartúa.

forces. In fact, there is no family in Puerto Rico that does not have a relative who has served in the military, some of whom have sadly died in combat. Some have even risen to the rank of general. Of particular note, Luis Raúl Esteves, born in Aguadilla in 1893, was the first Puerto Rican to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1915 along with Dwight D. Eisenhower and Omar Bradley in what became known as ‘‘the Class of Generals.’’Maj. Gen. Esteves went on to become adjutant general of the Puerto Rico National Guard.

In 1952, the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico established a republican form of government in accordance with Article IV, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution. Through the 1952 Constitution, citizens pledged -- by direct vote -- allegiance to their U.S. citizenship and to the Constitution of the United States of America, and accepted the authority of the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause, acknowledging the national government in the same manner as states do under federalism.

We, the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico, are subject to the jurisdiction of the three branches of the United States government. Significantly, we have contributed to shaping the nation as it exists today. As Don Luis Muñoz Marín once said, “We are Americans, not Pro Americans.”

May God bless the United States of America!

Five international movies to stream now

This month’s titles include Pride Month picks from Brazil, Sweden and Croatia; a soccer drama from Ireland; and a comedy from Italy.

‘Saipan’

For those seeking filmic appetizers to go with their World Cup viewing, Mubi currently has an entire program of international movies devoted to soccer, including renowned gems like Bill Forsyth’s “Gregory’s Girl” (1980), Corneliu Porumboiu’s “Infinite Football” (2018) and Alexandre Koberidze’s “What Do We See When We Look at the Sky?” (2021). Don’t miss one of the recent entrants into this canon: “Saipan,” about an infamous 2002 dispute between star Irish player Roy Keane and the then-manager of the Irish team, Mick McCarthy. While the team was making a brief stopover on the island of Saipan on their way to Japan for the World Cup finals, Keane, known for his short temper and brash rants, got into an explosive argument with McCarthy over dissatisfactory training arrangements. The manager sent him home — causing a media furor and essentially aborting the Irish team’s chances of winning the tournament.

increasingly combative, pushing McCarthy (Steve Coogan) to the end of his patience. The film demonstrates why soccer is such a cinematic game: The egos, the plays, the dramas off the pitch are as absorbing as those on the field. (Stream it on Mubi.)

‘Sandbag Dam’

This Croatian drama opens with the young, curly-haired Marko (Lav Novosel) engaging in a series of physical feats: riding his bike furiously, lifting his girlfriend in his strong arms, winning a pullup contest with his soccer mates (and then indulging in crude locker room talk about girls). He is the perfect jock, showing no signs that he was once in love with another boy, Slaven (Andrija Zunac), triggering a scandal that ended with Slaven leaving town. But then Slaven’s father dies, and he returns for the funeral. Like the local river, whose dangerous rise is constantly on the news, repressed desires start to surface.

picts harsh realities — particularly the ways in which homophobia pushes young queer people into dangerous games of survival — but with genuine admiration for chosen families and the grit of those who defend their identities even when pushed to the margins.

We meet 18-year-old Wellington (João Pedro Mariano) just as he is released from a juvenile detention center after a two-year stint. He comes home to realize that his parents have skipped town and left him no means of getting in touch. As he survives by sleeping on the streets and going out with his friends to cruising spots, he meets Ronaldo (Ricardo Teodoro), an older sex worker who takes Wellington under his wing, teaching him the ways of the trade.

Wellington and Ronaldo form a poignant bond, but love is hard when precarity and persecution encircle one’s relationship. Yet Caetano balances these hard truths with glowing scenes of dancing, sensuality and friendship; these characters may have to conduct their business in the dark, but they wear their queerness proudly, without shame, even in the bright light of day. When she gets the gig, she packs her bags and arrives in town (speaking barely any French), confident that if nothing else, she has the skills to take care of a little boy. But there’s a catch: The boy is actually an old, eccentric and irascible Swede, Einar (Claes Mansson), whose oddities include yelling daily in the garden of the house, “How do you do, my libido?” We soon learn that Einar left Sweden — and a wife and child — decades ago to find a place where he could live freely as a gay man; in France, he met a lover, Armand, who drew him into a world of romance, liberation and art. Now, growing old in his strange house full of nude paintings and memories of debauchery, he oscillates between pride at having created the life he wanted and grief at all that he had to give up to get there.

As Einar and Agneta open up to each other, his hard-won freedoms throw her stifling heterosexual life into relief. And it underlines what queerness is really about: never taking society’s expectations as a given, and instead living and loving by one’s own truths. (Stream it on Netflix.)

In this restaging of those few highstrung days in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, directors Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn capture the tragic absurdity and pressure-cooker atmosphere of the scandal by cutting between faces, places and archival and fictional footage at a pulsating rhythm. Even viewers who may know all the details of the incident might find themselves holding their breath as Keane (Eanna Hardwicke, walking a tightrope between obnoxiousness and admirable conviction) gets

Director Cejen Cernic Canak builds a slow burn of a film with two fantastic, sensitive actors, who say more with their eyes than their words. A few stray arguments and fights aside, the film’s portrayal of toxic patriarchy is never on the nose; it permeates the village like a fog, manifesting in everyday gestures and speech, and in the obsession with contests of strength, their homoerotic undercurrents notwithstanding. Canak’s depiction of queer desire, too, is similarly felt rather than stated aloud, a powerful and undeniable force in the face of prejudice. (Stream it on Tubi.)

‘Baby’

‘Je M’appelle Agneta’ Johanna Runevad’s comedy, about a Swedish woman who finds a new lease on life as an au pair in France, is full of surprises. If the broad contours of the story feel quite familiar, treading the well-worn beats of movies about midlife crises and older women rediscovering themselves, the details are idiosyncratic and delightful. Agneta (Eva Melander), a Francophile in Sweden who has spent 25 years working at the local transport office and going through the motions with her condescending husband, is laid off. In a lost, drunken stupor, she applies to a job she finds in the classifieds, seeking a Swedish au pair for a ward in Provence.

We discern from Doriano and Carlobianchi’s aimless conversations a backstory involving their years of work at an eyewear factory, a lucrative illicit business in the 1990s, the impact of the 2008 financial crisis, and treasure buried somewhere long forgotten. While Giulio stresses about deadlines, bedtimes and jobs, the older men navigate the world with the devil-maycare attitude of those who understand that striving does not guarantee prosperity, and luck rarely favors the bold. Amid the film’s entertaining high jinks, a subtle commentary emerges on how Italy has changed in the decades past, and how our experience of time has itself been reshaped by ruthless capitalism. ‘The Last One for the Road’ Two working-class geezers with years of strenuous labor (and even more strenuous boozing) under their belts roam around Venice for a night, in search of that elusive final drink. There is a deceptive simplicity and looseness to the premise of Francesco Sossai’s charming film. At one point, Doriano (Pierpaolo Capovilla) and Carlobianchi (Sergio Romano) crash the graduation party of some college students, and the bookish, lovesick Giulio (Filippo Scotti), a newly minted architect, joins their merry band. Intergenerational misadventures ensue, including a hilarious episode in which they stumble upon a mansion and pretend to be the surveyors the owner has been waiting for.

Dow jumps to record closing high after soft US jobs data, Nasdaq down with chip shares

The Dow rose more than 1% to a record closing high on Thursday ahead of the long holiday weekend as a softerthan-expected U.S. jobs report eased worries about interest rate hikes, while another sharp drop in chipmaker stocks weighed on the Nasdaq.

The S&P 500 ended flat on the day. The Dow recorded a fourth straight week of gains, its longest such streak since October 2024.

The U.S. market will be closed on Friday in observance of the U.S. Independence Day holiday.

The U.S. nonfarm payrolls report showed the economy added 57,000 jobs last month, far below economists’ estimates for a rise of 110,000. The unemployment rate was 4.2%, in line with expectations of 4.3%.

The employment report followed a run of strong job gains recently. Expectations for a rate hike from the Federal Reserve decreased after the report, according to CME FedWatch. For the September meeting, hike expectations dimmed to 55% from 64.1%.

The jobs report “doesn’t mean the fear of inflation is over,” said Adam Sarhan, chief executive at 50 Park Investments in New York. “It just takes the pressure off the Fed to raise rates in the short term.” Investors have been worried about inflation especially given sharp gains in oil prices at the start of the Iran war.

Apple shares rose 4.8% and helped to support all three major indexes. Nikkei Asia reported that Apple plans to launch five new iPhone models.

On the flip side, an index of semiconductors ended 5.4% lower on Thursday, falling sharply for a second day. Shares of Nvidia fell 1.4% while SanDisk dropped 14.1%.

Investors are likely taking profits in chip stocks following this year’s strong gains, said Bruce Zaro, managing director at Granite

Wealth Management in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The semiconductor index remains up about 78% for the year to date.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 594.83 points, or 1.14%, to 52,900.07, the S&P 500 gained 0.01 points to 7,483.24 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 207.36 points, or 0.80%, to 25,832.67.

For the week, the Dow rose about 2%, the S&P 500 gained 1.8% and the Nasdaq advanced 2.1%.

Tesla shares dropped 7.5% even though the electric carmaker posted second-quarter deliveries above estimates. Tesla shares had risen sharply this week ahead of the report.

Russia bombards Ukrainian capital with deadly wave of attacks

The Russian military blasted Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, with waves of ballistic missiles and drones that lasted into Thursday morning, a deadly show of force after weeks of Ukrainian attacks in Russia that have heaped pressure on President Vladimir Putin.

At least 21 people were killed and 85 injured in overnight attacks, Ukrainian officials said, as firefighters raced to extinguish blazes in districts across the city. Several apartment buildings were destroyed and an unknown number of people were trapped in the rubble, according to local authorities.

The barrage was the latest in the deadliest spring for civilians in Ukraine since the opening months of Moscow’s full-scale invasion in 2022, with the violence increasing as both sides have raced to develop new weapons.

Russia has been bombarding Ukrainian towns and cities throughout the war, but Ukraine is increasingly able to bring the war farther into Russia. It is using its growing arsenal of domestically produced long-range drones and cruise missiles to attack fuel facilities and military installations deep inside the country. And it is systematically hitting targets in every corner of occupied Ukraine, including Crimea, a peninsula controlled by Russia.

Ukraine’s growing reach has caused logistical struggles for the Russian military and has led to widespread fuel shortages across the country, eroding Putin’s ability to insulate

large parts of Russia, including Moscow, the capital, from the war. But it does not seem to have dented his resolve to continue fighting.

After initially staying silent on Ukraine’s ratcheting up of attacks, Putin said on Russian state television Sunday that the assaults on critical infrastructure were “obviously creating problems” and “certain shortages,” though he said the situation was not “critical.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement Thursday that the strikes on Kyiv were in response to Ukraine’s recent attacks. Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, said it was wrong to equate his country’s strikes in Russia with Moscow’s unrelenting bombardments.

“It is immoral to justify Russian atrocities against Ukrainians by saying that Moscow acts in response to Ukraine’s long-range strikes against Russia,” he said on social media. “In this war, there is an aggressor and a country

defending itself under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter. ”

The Ukrainian military said it had targeted Russian energy infrastructure again Thursday, claiming that it had struck an oil refinery in the town of Kstovo in the Nizhny Novgorod region, one of the largest in Russia.

The European Union responded to Russia’s attacks by proposing to impose new economic sanctions against entities that support Moscow’s military defense industry.

“Words of condemnation alone will not stop attacks on Kyiv,” Kaja Kallas, the bloc’s top diplomat, said on social media. “Only sustained military support for Ukraine and increased pressure on Moscow can do that.”

Ukraine has been trying to force the Russian military to pay a heavy price for every mile of land it seizes and increase the economic costs for the Kremlin. Moscow believes its military can outlast Ukraine’s outnumbered forces on the front while inflicting such a heavy human and economic toll that it breaks the will of civilians, according to Western military analysts.

Many of Kyiv’s 3 million residents had been bracing for a large-scale Russian assault in part because about two weeks had passed since the last one, giving Moscow time to stockpile missiles and drones. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine had warned in recent days that Russia was preparing a “massive strike,” and he urged people to be “especially careful.”

Before dawn Thursday, explosions boomed

and thick smoke rose over the Ukrainian capital. More than 50,000 people sought shelter in the city’s subway stations, according to local authorities, and tens of thousands took cover in basements, garages or in makeshift shelters at home.

Zelenskyy said more than 30 locations across Kyiv were hit or damaged, including residential buildings, an ambulance station, and a research institute.

In an underground parking garage in the Darnytsia district of the city, dozens of residents waited out the night’s bombardment. Some slept in their cars, others on the concrete floor.

“We could hear the explosions clearly — it wasn’t far away,” said Olena Rudenkova, a resident of the district. What has changed, she added, was not the fear but the response to it. “I don’t think anyone cries anymore, not even the children,” she said. “Everyone becomes as focused and angry as possible.”

The Ukrainian air force said Russia launched 74 missiles and 476 drones in the attack, primarily targeting Kyiv. The barrage included 28 ballistic missiles, which can only be intercepted by Patriot systems, it added.

Ukraine’s stockpile of Patriot interceptors was running low even before the latest attacks. NATO countries have been regularly shipping modest numbers of the interceptor missiles to Kyiv, but the Ukrainian military has been unable to keep up with Russia’s frequent strikes or Moscow’s capacity to produce new missiles.

Man killed by crocodile at a popular resort city in Mexico

Acrocodile attacked and killed a 28-year-old man on a heavily trafficked beach in the popular resort city of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on Friday evening, according to state government officials.

The man was “engaging in recreational activities” on the Marina Vallarta Beach, in front of the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa, when he was attacked and dragged out to sea by the crocodile, said Izaías Patlán Núñez, a spokesperson for the state police in Jalisco, the Mexican state that includes Puerto Vallarta.

The man’s body was located early Saturday, about 1,000 feet offshore, after an overnight search that included multiple law enforcement and rescue agencies, Núñez said. The crocodile suspected of the attack was caught nearby, he added.

Crocodile attacks in Puerto Vallarta are rare but not unheard-of, and fatal attacks are even more rare. In 2022, two

tourists from Colorado were injured by a crocodile while swimming in the ocean at night. An 18-year-old woman from Northern California was also attacked and injured by a crocodile near the Marriott Puerto Vallarta in 2021.

In a statement, the government of Jalisco called Friday’s attack “deeply unfortunate, unusual and isolated,” and said crocodiles in the area are “subject to ongoing management and monitoring.” Surveillance was increased in high-risk areas in response to the attack, the statement said.

Diego Thomas, a spokesperson for Marriott, said the hotel had “appropriate signage, as well as night patrolling and red flags to indicate caution in the area.” Images posted online show signage outside the hotel warning beachgoers about crocodiles and other animals, including jellyfish and stingrays.

“The safety and security of our guests and associates are our top priority,” Thomas said. He did not directly answer questions about whether the victim was a guest at the hotel.

A Southern California couple vacationing at the beach told NBC4 Los Angeles that they heard screams coming from the water and saw the victim get pulled under as the couple tried to reach him.

Jalisco officials warned visitors to pay attention to signage and to avoid swimming in high-risk areas at dawn, dusk and at night, and to immediately report any crocodile sightings to authorities.

What does Venezuela do with its dead?

In the first days after the calamitous earthquakes in Venezuela, rescuers and volunteers clawed through collapsed buildings searching for signs of life.

Now, as hope of finding more survivors fades, authorities are confronting a different challenge: recovering, identifying and burying thousands of victims in a country whose institutions had already been weakened by years of economic collapse and government mismanagement.

The sudden influx of bodies has quickly overwhelmed the country’s forensic system, leading officials to transform a seaport into a temporary morgue, move victims into refrigerated shipping containers and prepare for the possibility of mass burials.

The official death toll has increased daily and on Wednesday increased by more than 300 from the day before to 2,295, according to the Venezuelan government. More than 11,000 people were injured.

Two doctors at Caracas’ main morgue estimated the true number of dead was closer to 4,000. Anticipating the toll could rise further, the United Nations is procuring 10,000 body bags in coordination with the Venezuelan government, said Gianluca Rampolla del Tindaro, the U.N. resident coordinator in Venezuela.

U.S. officials said in a news conference Wednesday that they had deployed $300 million in humanitarian assistance and that they remained focused on saving lives.

The flood of bodies quickly exceeded the capacity of morgues in La Guaira, the state hardest hit by the earthquake.

The headlamps of rescuers working after dark light the scene amid a group of collapsed residential buildings in La Guaira, Venezuela, June 30, 2026. After devastating twin earthquakes flattened entire residential neighborhoods last week, experts fear the official death toll of 1,719 could be a serious undercount. (Adriana Loureiro Fernández/The New York Times)

During the first two days after the disaster, dozens of bodies lay on cardboard in a La Guaira hospital parking lot in the tropical heat, according to Gerson Hernández, a pastor there. Relatives lined up in vehicles to drop off bodies.

By Saturday authorities had started moving the bodies from the hospital to the cargo yard of a local port so the national forensic agency could work in a centralized zone, according to two forensic pathologists from the agency who asked not to be identified to because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Under large tents the doctors perform autopsies required by law before bodies can be buried or cremated. Investigators from Venezuela’s judicial police photograph victims, recover fingerprints and help identify the dead.

Outside the port on Monday, trucks con-

is immense.

Two forensic doctors at a state-run morgue in Caracas on Sunday said they were receiving between 40 to 80 bodies a day, including victims pulled alive from collapsed buildings who later died in hospitals and bodies brought from La Guaira by relatives.

As of Sunday, 150 bodies remained at the morgue, including 130 that had not yet been identified. Officials in La Guaira had been processing about 750 bodies a day, the doctors said, with about 50 forensic workers commuting from Caracas every day.

Doctors said many victims were so badly crushed beneath collapsed buildings that visual identification had become impossible. Specialists have relied on fingerprint recovery techniques while relatives searched for tattoos, moles, hairstyles and manicures.

tinued delivering coffins. From beyond the security perimeter, rows of bodies could be seen laid side by side on the ground.

Authorities have also begun using refrigerated shipping containers — normally reserved for transporting meat and other perishables — to preserve bodies as they await identification, according to police officers guarding the site and a local shipping executive familiar with the operation.

For relatives looking for missing family members the searches can be harrowing.

For five days, Daniely Pastora Hurtado Suárez, 32, said searched for her husband, going from hospital to hospital and eventually to the makeshift morgue at the port in La Guaira filled with the stench of death where the bodies were so disfigured that she almost took the wrong body home.

José Rincón said he spent three days walking among decomposing bodies spread across the ground of the port, manually unzipping body bags bursting with maggots to look for his grandson. Four refrigerated containers held additional victims.

“They’re all just thrown down there indiscriminately,” Rincón said.

The challenge facing forensic workers

While several relatives on Monday waiting outside the port said the identification process had become faster and more organized, the growing number of dead has led to difficult decisions about how bodies should be handled. Some family members said they had been quoted prices for cremations between $400 and $850 — prohibitively expensive for most Venezuelans.

Doctors at the Caracas morgue said the government had offered free cremations to families and that mass graves remain an option for authorities if fatalities continue to mount.

But the Venezuelan Society of Infectious Diseases urged authorities not to resort to mass burials, saying they should be avoided to prevent infectious disease outbreaks, complicate identification and prolong anguish for families.

Hurtado found her husband’s body after a five-day search. She said authorities were cremating some unclaimed bodies because of the overwhelming number of victims.

Fearing she would lose the chance to recover his remains, she borrowed $850 to pay a private funeral home to cremate him, saying she wanted to keep his ashes.

“As a family member you want to have something of your loved one,” she said. “Somewhere to go, to cry, to bring flowers. It’s the very least anyone deserves.”

The key ways Trump’s financial interests intersect with government policy

When President Donald Trump’s annual financial disclosure was released Tuesday, it showed that he reaped at least $2.2 billion from his various businesses last year, a singular haul for a president. Many of the gains stemmed from ventures that intersect with his administration, posing unparalleled potential conflicts of interest.

The White House rejected the idea that the president is using his power for his personal benefit. “Neither the president nor his family has ever engaged — or will ever engage — in conflicts of interest,” said Anna Kelly, a White House spokesperson.

Here are some of the biggest moneymakers for Trump and how they could be affected by his administration’s policies:

CRYPTOCURRENCY

The Trump administration has eased enforcement of crypto companies and rolled back regulations, even as the president and his family have embraced the industry and launched their own crypto company. In 2025, Trump made $1.4 billion from his family’s cryptocurrency businesses, the bulk of his overall revenue.

World Liberty Financial

Last year, an investment firm tied to the United Arab Emirates, a key U.S. ally, bought nearly half of the Trump family’s main crypto company, World Liberty Financial. Four months later, the UAE struck a deal with the Trump administration — over the objections of some national security officials — for the export of valuable computer chips that power artificial intelligence.

The earnings from foreign investment were $263 million.

$TRUMP meme coin sales

Trump launched his own meme coin three days before his inauguration as his supporters and top industry executives gathered in Washington for an event dubbed the Crypto Ball. In the following months, the Securities and Exchange Commission issued two statements announcing that the novelty digital assets are not subject to regulatory oversight because they are not considered securities.

The earnings were $636 million.

Stablecoin

In March 2025, World Liberty launched a digital currency called a stablecoin, a form

of cryptocurrency pegged to an actual asset like the U.S. dollar. Two months later, a UAE firm transferred $2 billion into the new coin, the largest single stablecoin transaction in the industry’s history, boosting profits for the Trump family and its investors. In July 2025, Trump signed legislation promoting stablecoins.

The earnings related to the stablecoin, which includes the UAE investment, were $205 million.

REAL ESTATE

Unlike his first term, when the Trump family business swore off all new foreign deals, the company has had almost no restrictions on dealmaking in his second term, opening the door to an array of overseas ventures.

Middle East

The Trump Organization has announced new international deals in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, licensing the family name in exchange for payments from governmentbacked developments. Both countries are key U.S. allies in a region that has been upended by the war with Iran. Last year, Qatar gave the U.S. a Boeing plane that Trump began using this week as Air Force One.

The earnings were $14 million for these new deals and a total of at least $37 million from all the Middle East deals.

worked to fast-track a Trump golf development as the country was seeking to head off steep U.S. tariffs.

The earnings were $5 million.

STOCKS AND BONDS

Trump has invested in a wide variety of companies that his administration regulates, including major players such as Nvidia, Alphabet and Broadcom. As of last year, he owned at least $10 million in shares in each company. Also on May 6, 2025, Trump purchased up to $5 million in Nvidia. One week later, on May 13, Trump announced a deal allowing Nvidia to sell hundreds of thousands of AI chips to Saudi Arabia. Trump does not direct his trades, which are handled by an outside firm.

Trump held at least $857 million in stocks, bonds and cash.

SETTLEMENTS WITH MEDIA AND

TECH COMPANIES

Trump reached settlements with tech firms Meta, YouTube and Twitter, which agreed to pay him millions after he was banned from their platforms in the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. He also reached agreements with media companies CBS and ABC, which he sued during the 2024 presidential campaign over their coverage.

At the same time, Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr has threatened to revoke the licenses of broadcasters, and the agency has announced it will enforce long-dormant rules on appearances by political candidates on network talk shows. The Justice Department also recently cleared the way for Paramount’s merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, which would consolidate the ownership of CBS News and CNN.

The proceeds of several of the settlements were donated to his presidential library foundation and the Trust for the National Mall, according to the filings.

The earnings were $87 million.

AMAZON DOCUMENTARY

Amazon bought and promoted a documentary about first lady Melania Trump, even as founder Jeff Bezos’ separate business interests in space and AI stood to be affected by Trump administration policies.

Melania Trump’s earnings from the project were about $11 million.

TRUMP MEDIA

Donald Trump uses his Truth Social website as the de facto platform for his White House announcements and personal proclamations, even as they relate to acts of war, driving users and advertisers to the social media platform.

The value of his stake as of Monday was roughly $875 million.

COPUR confirms decision to remove skeet shooter Bermúdez

The members of the board of directors of the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (COPUR) determined with 27 votes in favor, eight against, and one abstention earlier this week that handball player Nathalys Ceballos of Río Grande will be the sole flag bearer for Puerto Rico during the opening ceremony of the 25th Central American and Caribbean Games Santo

Domingo 2026.

The decision came on Wednesday in an extraordinary session in which the directors voted not to allow skeet shooter Luis “Tuto” Bermúdez González to be the male flag bearer for the delegation that will represent Puerto Rico at this summer’s CAC Games, which open on July 24.

Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (COPUR by its acronym in Spanish) President Sara Rosario Vélez presented a detailed chronology of events. Allegedly, the information reviewed by the board of directors this week was not available when Bermú-

dez González was selected.

In a written statement, Bermúdez González expressed that he is processing the institutional decision with sadness and pain, along with his wife, Ana Latorre Echeandía, a gold medalist at the 2014 Veracruz Games.

“My athletic mission lies in my results and in serving my fellow athletes,” the athlete stated. “Carrying our flag on the international stage has always been an honor that is evident in every training session and every competition. I am deeply grateful for every message and every gesture of support. Representing Puerto Rico is a privilege that I will always carry with pride.”

The COPUR’s decision prompted the island House of Representatives to approve Resolution 735, which demands an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the appointment and subsequent revocation of Bermúdez as flag bearer.

The resolution compels the House Recreation and Sports Committee to investigate the rules, criteria, and background check mechanisms used by the COPUR to select its candidates and why it failed to detect in a timely manner the information that later led to Bermúdez’s removal.

Similarly, the measure’s authors raised the question of when COPUR became aware of the events of 2018, particularly given the public allegation that the institution may have known about them prior to Bermúdez’s nomination.

“Transparency in the decision-making of an organization that represents Puerto Rico internationally, and that receives and manages public funds, is a matter of public interest for Puerto Rico,” the resolution states.

The San Juan Daily Star

According to information released by the news media, the events of 2018 are related to a request for a protection order filed by a woman who alleged that she had been subjected to lewd acts and unlawful detention by Bermúdez.

The press has reported that a San Juan court issued an ex parte protection order in

December 2018, and the matter was subsequently heard by the Court of Appeals. However, the allegations were not adjudicated on their merits, and Bermúdez, who was selected as a flagbearer candidate on June 17, has publicly rejected the COPUR’s decision to revoke his nomination five days later.

Meanwhile, legislators are seeking to de-

termine whether Bermúdez was afforded due process and the presumption of innocence to which every person is entitled.

“It is necessary to examine how COPUR reconciles both principles and whether it has clear, fair, and uniform protocols for addressing these types of situations,” according to the measure.

Travis Trice wins 2026 BSN Awards MVP

The National Superior Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) league announced this week that Travis Trice of the Criollos of Caguas will be the 2026 BSN Awards MVP, the league’s top award of the regular season.

The selection of the winners combined votes from accredited sports media and representatives of the league’s 10 teams.

Twenty-eight sports journalists participated in the voting, choosing first, second and third place in each category. Each first-place finish received three points, second place two points, and third place one point.

Team owners and representatives voted using the same format, but with double weighting: six points for first place, four for second, and two for third.

Daniel Rivera of the Gigantes of Carolina was selected Rookie of the Year, while André Curbelo of the Atléticos of San Germán won the Most Improved Player of the Year Award.

Christian “Cuco” López of the Criollos was chosen Sixth Man of the Year and also received the Social Impact Award.

Moses Brown, also of the Criollos, won Defensive Player of the Year. José “Cheo” Rivera of the Atléticos was recognized as Owner of the Year.

Christian Dalmau of the Vaqueros of Bayamón won Coach of the Year, while Jorge Vázquez received the Referee Excellence Award.

The 2026 All-Star Five consisted of Curbelo, Trice, Brown, Montrezl Harrell of the Atléticos and Jaylen Nowell of the Gigantes.

3 players set records in women’s softball

The 2026 Women’s Premier Softball League (LPSF by its initials in Spanish) regular season concluded with three new all-time records, set by Yahelis Muñoz, Karla Claudio and Yeraldine Carrión during the final weekend of play.

Muñoz, catcher for the Leonas of Ponce, set a record by hitting her 19th career home run in Sunday’s game against the Valencianas of Juncos, becoming the all-time home run leader in the LPSF.

With that hit, Muñoz surpassed the record of 18 home runs she shared with Ninostka Amaro.

Another league milestone was reached by Karla Claudio, owner and player for the Bravas of Cidra, who earned

her 100th career walk in Saturday’s first game against the Costaneras of Guánica.

Claudio became the first player in league history to reach 100 walks. In the second game, she drew another walk, bringing her career total to 101.

From the pitching staff, Mexican import Carrión, of the Caribeñas of Salinas, also made her mark, becoming the first pitcher to record 100 strikeouts in a single LPSF season.

Carrión reached the milestone by striking out Kennedy Byrd in the first inning of Saturday’s second game against the Leonas of Ponce. The star pitcher added five more strikeouts to finish the regular season with a total of 105, setting a new single-season record.
