The magnitude 7.5 earthquake in Venezuela on Wednesday was the largest to strike the country or just off its coast since 1900, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake was recorded near the coast of the South American country on Oct. 29, 1900, according to the USGS catalog.
Because recordings of this quake from modern instrumentation were not available, that magnitude calculation is based on reports of damage and effects in the area, said Paule Earle, a geophysicist with the USGS.
The so-called San Narciso Earthquake of 1900 shook Caracas early in the morning, killing 21 people and injuring 50 more while toppling churches, public buildings and homes across the city, according to an impact report from the agency.

The New York Times received details of the massive quake more than two weeks later and reported Nov. 17, 1900, that “some 300 buildings collapsed, the tower of the university and several church
spires fell, and the Government buildings were more or less damaged.”

A large number of Venezuelans were left to live in tents, the Times reported.
The USGS estimated that Wednesday’s quake, which was preceded by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, could be far deadlier than the one in 1900, though the human toll and the scale of the damage were not yet clear. Experts said the two quakes were related, describing the 7.2-magnitude quake as a foreshock and the 7.5 one as the main shock.
“An earthquake can cause stress changes in the ground, and that can cause other earthquakes, which is likely what occurred in Venezuela,” said William Barnhart, a geophysicist with the USGS.
Venezuela sits between the South American and Caribbean tectonic plates, so earthquakes are somewhat common, he added.
Venezuela has been struck by other earthquakes of magnitudes of 7.0 and above. A magnitude 7.3 quake struck Aug. 21, 2018, and a magnitude 7.0 quake was recorded July 9, 1997.

Rescue crews and residents dug through the rubble of buildings on Thursday searching for survivors after the worst earthquakes to hit Venezuela in nearly six decades.
At least 188 people were killed and more than 1,500 injured in back-to-back quakes on Wednesday, the president of Venezuela’s national assembly said. The toll from the quakes, which struck the country’s populous northern states, was virtually certain to rise as rescuers began to reach the hardest-hit areas.
Videos posted on social media show collapsed residential towers in the capital, Caracas, and in the nearby port city of La Guaira, where more than 100 buildings were destroyed, according to the United Nations’ main humanitarian agency. There were growing fears about the toll in nearby shantytowns, where many people live in precarious homes built on hillsides.
Residents in La Guaira said they had seen few rescue workers and minimal government presence. Many began digging through the rubble themselves. People outside one collapsed building estimated that hundreds were trapped beneath the ruins. One woman, Yorliana Colmenares, listened to taps coming from people trapped underneath.
“They’ve pulled out a lot of dead people,” she said, adding that she believed her boyfriend was inside the building. “Injured people, chil-
dren, animals.”
Outside another collapsed structure, a couple searched for their eight-year-old boy, who had been playing basketball nearby when the quakes hit.
Venezuela is rich in oil, but is still trying to emerge from a decadelong depression that wiped out most of its economic production and prompted millions to leave the country. Its rescue services have been hollowed out, infrastructure has deteriorated and inflation has reached record highs, which is likely to compound the challenges of recovery.

The disaster comes at a pivotal moment in Venezuela’s modern history. A U.S. military raid removed the long-ruling autocrat, Nicolás Maduro, in January, transforming the country from a U.S. adversary into effectively a satellite state.
The earthquakes are likely to complicate the tussle for power that has followed Maduro’s arrest. His former vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, took over as president with Washington’s blessing but has faced growing popular discontent.
Shortly after the quakes, Rodríguez called for national unity and pointed to the promises of international aid to her government, including from President Donald Trump.
“We will be there for our new and great friends,” Trump wrote in a social media post Wednesday night, adding he has told governmental agencies to “get ready to move quickly.”
Here’s what else to know:
Witnesses: Residents of Caracas and nearby cities described scenes of terror and confusion as buildings collapsed, windows rattled, and homes lost power when two major earthquakes struck the country on Wednesday evening.
Structural risks: The U.S. Geological Survey said that many people in affected areas live in structures made of brick masonry and adobe block construction that are not reinforced and therefore more vulnerable to earthquakes.
Destructive factors: Scientists said several factors amplified the quakes’ power. The two temblors came in quick succession, a rare “doublet.” The quakes also struck in a valley full of loose sediments, which causes more destructive shaking.
International aid: Rodríguez said that rescuers from other countries would start arriving in Venezuela early Thursday, including teams from the United States, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico and Qatar. China, Brazil and several Caribbean nations have also offered support, she added.

LUMA Energy escalated its confrontation with the González Colón administration on Thursday, alleging that it has preliminary evidence that Secretary of the Governorship Francisco Domenech pressured officials to expedite the cancellation of the company’s contract and to promote the search for a replacement operator.
The claim was made by LUMA attorney Fran Torres Viada during an interview on Nación Z, where he said the allegations form part of the company’s legal strategy in response to the Government of Puerto Rico’s lawsuit seeking to nullify the transmission and distribution contract.
“We have preliminary evidence… that the Secretary of the Governorship has participated directly in meetings with officials involved in the management of this contract to influence their judgment and pressure for its
cancellation,” Torres Viada said.
He added that, according to LUMA, Domenech also made efforts to encourage the consideration of other operators. “We have evidence that he has taken affirmative steps to advance interests that are not the best interests of the people of Puerto Rico,” he said.
Torres Viada noted that the company expects the litigation to expand the evidentiary record through what he described as an “aggressive, energetic” discovery process. He said LUMA intends to litigate “with the tools of knowledge, intelligence, and truth.”

nomic Development and Commerce (DDEC). Both Domenech and Governor Jenniffer González Colón have defended his actions as part of his role in implementing the administration’s public policy, rejecting claims of improper intervention.
González Colón has repeatedly stated—both during her campaign and since taking office—that canceling LUMA’s contract is a commitment of her administration. The government’s lawsuit argues that the company has failed to meet contractual obligations.
“frivolous” and seeking up to $4.5 billion in damages.
In that filing, the company linked the dispute to other controversies affecting the administration, including the potable water supply crisis and the public clash between Domenech and former DDEC Secretary Sebastián Negrón Reichard. LUMA argued that these issues point to a broader credibility problem that could undermine investor confidence in Puerto Rico.
The allegations surface as Domenech faces separate scrutiny over his involvement in matters related to the Department of Eco-
The latest statements come days after LUMA filed a counterclaim against the government, calling the attempt to void the contract
While LUMA maintains that the government’s lawsuit is politically motivated and warns that terminating the contract could destabilize the electrical system, the administration insists it has sufficient grounds to seek nullification based on alleged contractual breaches. The escalating conflict—now involving direct accusations against the governor’s top aide—signals a prolonged legal and political battle with significant implications for Puerto Rico’s energy system and governance.

Morovis Mayor Carmen Maldonado González said the municipality has reached a court-supervised agreement with the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority to resolve a federal lawsuit over persistent water service failures that have left thousands of residents facing chronic interruptions.
Maldonado González said the agreement, which will be supervised by the U.S. District Court, commits PRASA to completing a series of infrastructure projects intended to stabilize potable water service across Morovis. The municipality filed the lawsuit in August 2019 and later appealed to the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston to compel action.
“There are families in Morovis who, in a single month, may have water for only a week—or even less,” the mayor said in a written statement. “Thanks to the patience of our residents, the work of our legal team, and now the cooperation of PRASA’s management, we have reached this stage. The court has also required PRASA to submit quarterly progress reports to the municipality. Now it’s time to get to work.”
Maldonado González added that the court-supervised reporting will allow the municipality to keep residents informed about the pace of construction and the expected timeline for resolving long‑standing service deficiencies.

Monsignor Geraldo Ramírez Torres has been appointed the new bishop of Ponce and will be ordained on August 15, priest Orlando Lugo confirmed in a radio interview.
This marks the first episcopal appointment
in Puerto Rico by Pope Leo XIV, following the resignation of Bishop Rubén Antonio González Medina.
Lugo highlighted Ramírez Torres’s 35‑year career in education and his long-standing ministry to the incarcerated population. He noted that in his first public appearance as bishop‑designate, Ramírez Torres plans to make a special
and reserve tanks. PRASA is currently rehabilitating the Morovis Urbano Filtration Plant, where 59% of the work has been completed. The $13.46 million project is expected to be finished in September.
Work is also underway at the Morovis Sur Filtration Plant, built in 1945 and severely deteriorated after Hurricanes Irma and María. The rehabilitation is 52% complete and is scheduled for completion in April 2027, with a total investment of $51.67 million. As part of the project, the diameter of the main force pipe will be increased from 16 to 24 inches.
In addition, PRASA has completed the Morovis Sur Raw Water Intake project, a $3.29 million initiative that will be inaugurated in August. The upgrade increases raw water extraction
dedication to people who are imprisoned.
“It is a Gospel mandate, a work of mercy, an obligation of the Church,” Lugo said.
José A. Frontera Agenjo, president of the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico (PUCPR), celebrated the announcement, expressing gratitude for Bishop González Medina’s service and welcoming Ramírez Torres as the new bishop and ex officio grand chancellor of the institution.
Frontera Agenjo said the university receives the new bishop “with joy, hope, and filial affection,” and pledged support for his
capacity from 3 million to 4.5 million gallons.
To improve distribution, PRASA has allocated $38.75 million for a systemwide upgrade that is currently 20% complete and expected to be finished by September 2027. The project includes replacing deteriorated two-inch pipes with four‑inch lines and installing 128 new air‑release valves. The improvements are designed to meet a daily demand of 3.28 million gallons. The municipality and PRASA are also evaluating interconnection options and tank capacity increases for the Barahona and Patrón sectors.
Additional projects remain in the design and funding‑identification phase, including plans to replace four-inch pipes with six-inch lines in the Barahona, Torrecillas, Unibón, San Lorenzo, and Morovis Norte neighborhoods.
pastoral mission.
Lugo also clarified that the appointment of a new archbishop for San Juan—a post vacated by Archbishop Roberto González’s resignation— could occur at any time, as it is independent of other diocesan processes.
He declined to speculate on whether the current bishop of Mayagüez, Ángel Luis Ríos Matos, might be selected for the role.
“Any bishop currently in Puerto Rico is capable of exercising the functions with dignity and responsibility,” Lugo said, adding that speculation rarely proves accurate.

The Senate has approved, with amendments, House Joint Resolution 356 (A-117), an administration measure that allocates $13.1805 billion from the General Fund to cover the operational expenses of the Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branches during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2027.
During the presentation of the budget report, the chair of the Committee on Treasury, Budget and PROMESA, Senator Migdalia Padilla Alvelo, emphasized that the fiscal plan maintains flexibility for future revisions. “This is not written in stone,” she said, expressing her expectation that Puerto Rico will achieve consolidated balanced budgets that allow for the exit of the Financial Oversight and Management Board. “We want, once and for all, to achieve those four balanced budgets so the Board can release us,” she stated.
Padilla Alvelo described the budget as the result of “a rigorous process of analysis, evaluation, and responsible oversight” aimed at balancing fiscal discipline with the continuity of essential services. She explained that the measure strengthens priority areas such as public safety, health, education, and rehabilitation.
Among the main allocations is a $2.981 billion appropriation for the Department of Education, designated to cover payroll, school transportation, special education, technological assistance, student scholarships, and other operational expenses.
In the health sector, $1.8152 billion was approved, including $1.0303 billion for the Health Insurance Administration (ASES), $514.3 million for the Department of Health, $102.7 million for the Medical Services Administration, and $150 million for the Mental Health and Addiction Services Administration.
Public safety will receive $1.227 billion, of which $1.071 billion corresponds to the Puerto Rico Police Bureau. The allocation includes funds for payroll, recruitment, overtime, equipment, and $20 million for the federally mandated police reform.
The University of Puerto Rico will receive $560.9 million, and another $12.3 million is assigned to other public higher-education institutions. The Department of Transportation and Public Works will receive an allocation of $55.4 million, a $12 million reduction from the previous fiscal year.
In support of the measure, the deputy majority spokesperson, Juan Oscar Morales Rodríguez, argued that “voting

The Comptroller of Puerto Rico, Carmen Vega Fournier, favored a package of legislative measures aimed at strengthening the oversight capabilities of the Office
of the Comptroller of Puerto Rico (OCPR), improving audit processes and modernizing the government contract registration system.
During a public hearing of the Government Committee of the House of Representatives, Vega Fournier endorsed House Bill 1263, by Representative Victor Pares Otero, which amends the organic law of the OCPR to impose the payment of costs and attorney’s fees on witnesses who, frivolously or recklessly, refuse to appear or hand over required documents during an investigation.

The comptroller indicated that the measure complements existing legal mechanisms by promoting timely cooperation and reducing delays in audit processes.
He also supported House Bill 1264, which proposes the creation of a standardized platform for drafting and registering government contracts. He explained that the current system still relies on printed documents and PDF files, a process he described as “archaic” and one that limits the visibility of all government contracts.
Vega Fournier noted that digitization would allow for greater traceability of documents from their creation to their final registration, strengthening internal controls and government transparency. She added that the platform will require an investment of approximately $3 million, funds
For his part, Parés Otero emphasized that the centralized system would allow for more efficient verification of the information contained in the contracts and proposed that the tool be available to the three branches of government and the municipalities.
The comptroller also dismissed concerns about a possible impact on municipal autonomy, clarifying that the initiative does not alter the powers of mayors regarding public procurement, but rather seeks to eliminate paper processes and modernize the registry.
In addition, Vega Fournier supported Senate Bill 808, which would give the OCPR greater discretion to determine the frequency of audits of the Office of Government Ethics (OEG), according to available resources and the Annual Audit Plan.
Currently, the law requires audits of the OEG at least every two years. However, the comptroller maintained that staff reductions in the auditing area necessitate prioritizing resources and focusing efforts on higher-risk areas.
“Effective oversight requires adequate tools, timely access to information, and structures that promote prevention and accountability,” Vega Fournier concluded.

At two separate victory parties after the Democratic House primaries in New York City on Tuesday night, the same chant echoed from the crowd: “Free, free Palestine!”
In Harlem, Darializa Avila Chevalier was celebrating her triumph over Rep. Adriano Espaillat, a steadfast supporter of Israel in his decade in Congress. In East Williamsburg, Claire Valdez addressed supporters after defeating Antonio Reynoso, the Brooklyn borough president, and promised, “We will stand up to the genocide.”
The election results in New York became the latest evidence of a swing against Israel in public opinion that is fast eroding the foundations of U.S. support for the Jewish state. In a third race Tuesday, Brad Lander, the former New York City comptroller, defeated the incumbent, Rep. Dan Goldman, after staking his campaign on opposing Goldman for being insufficiently critical of Israel.

The results underscore the deep fractures in support for Israel within the United States, a trend that already has profound political implications for Republicans as well as Democrats. If the erosion of support continues, it could reshape one of the nation’s closest alliances, one that nonetheless remains bolstered by generations of ties, the influence of Israel’s remaining supporters and the complexity of U.S. interests in the Middle East.
Polls show that the anti-Israel mood is increasingly bipartisan, especially among young people — a dynamic that is being reflected in politics, left and right. While progressive Democrats were long the most critical voices, it was Vice President JD Vance who delivered a remarkable rebuke from the White House Briefing Room lectern last

week. President Donald Trump, Vance warned, “is the only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this moment in time.”
Vance said he wanted to remind the Israelis that twothirds of the weapons that “protected your homeland” were American-made and paid for by U.S. tax dollars, raising the possibility that the Trump administration could in the future condition aid on Israeli actions.
For now, Trump has not suggested he could take such a step, even as he has angered pro-Israel figures in his base by trying to rein in Israel’s war in Lebanon. But Vance’s starker rhetoric, along with the anti-Israel stance of “America First” right-wing figures like Tucker Carlson, has underlined that the country can no longer count on the Republican Party as a uniform bastion of support.
Then there are the Democrats, whose voters began to turn against Israel in large numbers during the war in the Gaza Strip and now are four times more likely to sympathize with Palestinians than with Israel, according to a New York Times/Siena poll in May.
“The real demand is for a reckoning,” said Daniel Biss, mayor of the Chicago suburb of Evanston, who has been opposed by the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC in his campaign for Congress. “Unrestricted military aid is an absurd policy for any country to have with any country,” he said.
In a written statement, a spokesperson for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee described the U.S.-Israel relationship as “a mutually beneficial partnership that gives America a priceless strategic advantage.”
“While there is a more challenging political and policy environment, we are confident that there is strong
bipartisan support on the policy issues we most care about,” said Patrick Dorton, a spokesperson for the United Democracy Project, AIPAC’s super political action committee, which has spent millions in Democratic primaries this year. He added that Tuesday’s winners were part of a “new and alarming trend” of the “rise of anti-Israel leftists.”
Still, Democrats who are strong supporters of Israel have won in primaries throughout the country, including in Utah and Maryland this week.
In recent years, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel largely bet on Republicans — with their hawkish foreign policy tradition and their pro-Israel base of evangelical voters — as his political backbone in the United States. Analysts say he will look to Trump’s backing as he faces an election this fall.
But Netanyahu has also benefited from the backing of much of the Democratic establishment, as was the case when President Joe Biden did far less to push back on Israel’s conduct in the war in Gaza than what progressive voters were calling for.
Now that bipartisan backing is quickly crumbling. For example, roughly three-quarters of Senate Democrats in April backed a measure to cancel arms sales to Israel — up from about half of the caucus voting for a similar resolution last year. The measure failed amid Republican opposition, but it was the latest indicator of declining Democratic support.
Philip H. Gordon, who served as the national security adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris, said public opinion on Israel has changed in a way that “no one could have imagined years before, even months or years before.”
But the Israeli government long assumed that U.S. support was a given, he asserted.
“Maybe it’s too late,” he said. “They’ve just taken it for granted for so long.”
Gordon predicted that the 10-year, $38 billion package of military aid signed by the Obama administration, set to expire in 2028, could prove to be the last of its kind.
“A couple of years ago, it would have just been a given,” he said. “Now I think it’s highly likely that it doesn’t get renewed at all.”
But a break in the U.S.-Israel relationship is by no means ordained.
The political backlash against Israel comes at a time when the links between the defense and security establishments of the two countries, by some measures, appear stronger than ever. In their bombardment of Iran in March and April, the U.S. and Israeli militaries displayed a previously unseen level of integration. And as Israeli defense and cyber technology advances, proponents of the relationship argue, the United States will have no choice but to continue to seek close ties.

Israel may have astonished much of the world with its tactical skill in its recent war against Iran, but at least for now, it’s lost. With the help of cheerleaders on Fox News, Israel pulled Donald Trump into its war; The New York Times reported on his eagerness to take credit for a mission that appeared to be succeeding wildly. But then Trump turned around and forced Israel to back down, declaring a ceasefire and lambasting the country for its continued bombing.
If that ceasefire holds, it will mean, thankfully, that this harrowing episode has concluded without triggering World War III, as some feared. But it also hasn’t achieved Israel and America’s primary objective, which was ending Iran’s nuclear program. Indeed, it now may be more likely, not less, that Iran will become a nuclear power.
On Tuesday, the Times, The Washington Post and CNN all reported on a preliminary classified report from the Defense Intelligence Agency, which found that the U.S. bombing campaign set back Iran’s nuclear program by months, not years. It’s early, but Iran appears to have removed much of its highly enriched uranium before the attack, possibly to secret facilities. The sites that were hit apparently didn’t sustain as much damage as people in the administration had hoped, with many centrifuges remaining intact.
Meanwhile, Israel has shown Iran the extent of its intelligence penetration into the country and cannot, at least for the foreseeable future, continue its war without enraging Trump. Nor is Trump likely to restart the war anytime soon, since doing so would puncture his narrative of success.
“Now the U.S. and Israel have basically demonstrated their capabilities,” said Jon Wolfsthal, who was a senior director for arms control and nonproliferation on Barack Obama’s National Security Council. “They shot their shots,” he said, and they neither got rid of Iran’s nuclear program nor toppled its regime. Iran has obviously been weakened and humiliated by

Israel’s assault, which revealed how profoundly its government had been infiltrated by foreign intelligence, and how isolated it is globally. But its own pitiful performance in the war could create new incentives for it to rush toward a nuclear weapon. “They’ve been attacked by two nuclear states,” Wolfsthal said. “It’s made getting a nuclear weapon seem more necessary from a security point of view.”
Until 12 days ago, he pointed out, Iran was at least partly cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency, giving it access to the country’s nuclear materials and facilities.
“All that’s now lost, and I don’t think it’s going to come back anytime soon,” he said. Trump pulled out of Obama’s hard-won
nuclear agreement with Iran out of spite, and now we’re reaping the results.
For the moment, it might be a good thing that Trump is taking his cues from Fox News and relishing what he views as a great triumph. The more he’s convinced he already won, the less likely he is to resume the war, with all its attendant risks. What we’re seeing is in some ways a repeat of 2018, when Trump announced, after his preposterous summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, that there was “no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea.” It wasn’t true, but because he believed it, he became much less belligerent.
It is perhaps the best that can be hoped for with Trump: not a real victory, but a Potemkin one.

‘Sisu’ (2023)
You have to congratulate Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander for his commercial savvy: With this sleeper hit, he’s concocted a lean, mean mixture of the most joy-buzzer elements of “John Wick” and “Inglourious Basterds.” Set in the final days of World War II, it tells the story of a gold prospector (Jorma Tommila), who looks, at first, like a harmless soul. But he has a past. A former commando, he’s described as a “one man death squad,” and when a Nazi platoon steals the gold he’s recently recovered, he sets about getting it back — and killing anyone who gets in his way. Helander stages his action with grindhouse glee, cheerfully breaking bones by the handful and spurting blood by the bucket, and indulging his audience in the simple pleasure of watching Nazis squirm. ‘Mid90s’ (2018)
“Die Hard” is approaching its 40th anniversary, but it still casts a large shadow over action cinema (as we’ve seen). Yet the quality so few of its imitators manage to replicate is the unique charisma of the star Bruce Willis, whose John McClane was both an action hero and a relatable, vulnerable Everyman. This taut thriller, which is essentially “‘Die Hard’ in a sports arena,” boasts a rare, successful match for that protagonist. Dave Bautista’s compelling mixture of soul and brawn is a good, clean fit for Knox, a vacationing retired military man battling Russian revolutionaries who have taken over a London stadium during a high-profile soccer match; he’s likable and charismatic, which keeps the stakes high. Scott Mann’s direction is energetic, executing crisp action beats, including a motorcycle chase down the arena’s corridors and an especially memorable kitchen brawl. It’s somehow both ingenious and ridiculous, and that’s just as it should be. (Stream it on Amazon Prime Video and Peacock.)
‘Jazzy’ (2025)
Director Morrisa Maltz burst onto the indie scene with her 2023 narrative debut, “The Unknown Country,” which was playing art house theaters as its star Lily Gladstone was accumulating plaudits for her work in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” “Jazzy” is something of a spinoff, with a brief return for Gladstone’s character, while focusing on a minor “Unknown Country” character, Jazzy. As played by the wonderful Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreaux, Jazzy is a young Lakota girl in South Dakota who does some serious growing up over the course of a surprisingly expansive 86 minutes. The picture has a messy, offhand quality, as if we’re eavesdropping on these lives, rather than seeing them carefully staged for the camera. Its conflicts are relatively minor — such as a schism between Jazzy and her best friend, Syriah (Syriah Fool Head Means, also excellent) — but “Jazzy” understands how, at this age, every moment feels revelatory. (Stream it on Hulu.)
Actor Jonah Hill quietly pivoted to directing with this seemingly autobiographical memory play that focuses on a young man named Stevie (Sunny Suljic) on the precipice of his teenage years. Stevie has trouble fitting in — until he falls in with a group of young skateboarders and begins appropriating their style, slang and bad habits. Hill wisely chooses not to simply set his film in the mid-1990s; he apes the look and style of that period’s indie cinema, shooting on super 16 mm and recalling low-budget sleeper hits like “Kids” and “Welcome to the Dollhouse.” He sands down some of the rough edges of those provocative pictures, but nevertheless crafts a snapshot of a specific time and sensibility that’s undeniably evocative. (Stream it on Netflix.)
‘Remember’ (2015)
Six years before he died, Christopher Plummer played one of his final leading roles — and a juicy one at that — for the gifted director Atom Egoyan (“The Sweet Hereafter”). Plummer stars as Zev, an Auschwitz survivor hunting an official there who escaped justice; Martin Landau is a friend and fellow survivor who plots their shared mission of vengeance. The catch is that Zev is succumbing to dementia, which makes him less reliable (and perhaps more dangerous). Benjamin August’s twisty screenplay is kept together by the fine performances of Plummer and Landau, two pros who can make

any scene convincing. (Stream it on Amazon Prime Video.)
‘Garbo: Where Did You Go?’ (2024)
These days, even among certain circles of cinephiles, Greta Garbo is remembered less as an actor (much less a human being) than as a mystique, an embodiment of celebrity malaise and zealous privacy. Director Lorna Tucker attempts to break through the persona to the person in this fascinating biographical documentary, using film clips, interviews with experts and associates, archival audio and deliberately artificial dramatizations. Tucker uses multiple unconventional framing devices (plus narration by Noomi Rapace) when one would probably do, but it’s a welcome respite from the typical bio-doc tropes, allowing her to follow Garbo’s trail through Hollywood’s studio system and New York’s socialite circles, and even to observe the reflections and regrets that haunted Garbo late in life. ‘Ernest Cole: Lost and Found’ (2024)
Ernest Cole was a gifted South African photographer whose images of the horrors of apartheid, collected in his influential 1967 volume “House of Bondage,” were an essential chronicle of that period. But his life was something of a mystery — he moved to New York City shortly before the book’s publication and continued taking photos, but never published a follow-up and slowly disappeared from public life. Esteemed filmmaker Raoul Peck (“I Am Not Your Negro”) attempts to solve that mystery with this fascinating documentary. Coupling his photos with narration (the photographer’s own words) read with searching intensity by LaKeith Stanfield, Peck constructs an essential tribute to a vitally important artist. The Nasdaq fell on Thursday, dragged down by losses in Big Tech shares, while see-saw trade lifted the S&P 500 slightly higher in the afternoon, and a shift into other sectors lifted the Dow as investors digested new economic data.
Technology shares reversed early gains to move lower, weighing on the Nasdaq, as investors worried about hyperscaler spending on artificial intelligence and who foots the bill, fears that outweighed upbeat signals on AI demand from Micron (MU.O), and Qualcomm (QCOM.O).
The Nasdaq was on track for its biggest monthly decline since March 2025.
Apple (AAPL.O), slid 4.7% after hiking prices for iPads and MacBooks to counter surging memory and storage chip costs. Shares of Nvidia (NVDA.O), Microsoft (MSFT.O), and Alphabet (GOOGL.O), were also down between 1% and 4%.
Micron soared 17.8% after its earnings and forecasts beat Wall Street estimates. Still, concerns over debtbacked spending by hyperscalers and fears of a more hawkish Federal Reserve kept weighing on the market this week.
“The market realized that one company’s blowout earnings and revenues mean someone else is paying the price for that down the line,” said Carol Schleif, chief investment officer at BMO Family Office. “For Micron to generate the kinds of earnings and revenues they do, it’s coming out of somebody else’s hide.”
Qualcomm rose 7.3%. Other memory chip shares also rose with Sandisk (SNDK.O), soaring 19.9%. Western Digital (WDC.O), rose 5% and Seagate Technology (STX.O), gained 3.2%.
Six out of 11 major S&P 500 sectors moved higher, with the industrial sector (.SPLRCI), leading gains with a 1.9% rise. Consumer discretionary and consumer staple stocks led the declines.
At 2:25 p.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI), rose 210.07 points, or 0.41%, to 52,058.97, the S&P 500 (.SPX), gained 17.23 points, or 0.23%, to 7,375.77 and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC), lost 47.33 points, or 0.19%, to 25,429.31.
MOST ASSERTIVE STOCKS

The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index (.SOX), rose 3.9% and was on track for its strongest quarter on record, according to LSEG data.
The U.S. Department of Commerce released a slew of data on Thursday.
U.S. inflation increased further in May, breaking above 4.0% for the first time in three years on higher energy prices, and potentially drawing the Federal Reserve closer to raising interest rates.

40 years ago, engineers began imagining a new kind of computer powered by the strange rules of quantum mechanics, one that could surpass anything we have today.
In response to rising price pressures, traders anticipate the Fed will lift interest rates by at least 25 basis points before the year-end, according to LSEG data.
A final reading of first-quarter GDP data showed the economy grew by 2.1%, compared to a prior estimate of 1.6%. Meanwhile, jobless claims data showed a higherthan-expected fall in the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits.
“Inflation came in toasty, like people expected it to, but not super hot,” Schleif said. “The suspicion is, with oil prices coming down, you’ll see continue to cool somewhat as we go into the summer and fall months.”
Oil prices fell below pre-war levels this week.
Among other movers, Bio-Techne Corp (TECH.O), jumped 19.7% after Germany’s Merck KGaA (MRCG. DE), agreed to acquire the biotech firm for $73 per share in cash, representing a total enterprise value of about $11.3 billion.

Iraq’s new prime minister has met with significant resistance as he attempts to bring the Iran-backed militias in his country under state control, after intense pressure from the Trump administration to rein in the armed groups.
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi came to power in late April, shortly after the United States suspended shipments of dollars to Iraq that it had earned from its own oil sales and halted funding for the country’s security services. The measures reinforced U.S. demands for a crackdown on militias that operate outside of government control and for Iraq’s government to distance itself from Iran.
Iraq has been caught in a tug-of-war for years between its two main allies — the United States and Iran. At times, the two foreign powers have turned the country into a proxy battlefield.
And this is not the first time Iraq has tried to bring the militias under tighter government control, but previous attempts have failed.
Al-Zaidi, a political newcomer, ordered all armed groups last month to come under direct state authority. Some of the most powerful Iran-linked militias rejected the demand.
Chief among them is Kataib Hezbollah, a group that has attacked U.S. targets in Iraq in recent months and has claimed responsibility for high-profile kidnappings, including that of a U.S. journalist in Baghdad this year.
The prime minister’s directive did not call for disbanding the militias completely, as the U.S. administration has insisted. And analysts said they doubted the move would appease Washington, with one comparing it to little more than shifting a gun from one hand to another.
“This is more of a veneer of going after the militias,” said Renad Mansour, an Iraq analyst at Chatham House, a research institute based in London. “Because the devil is in the details, and once you get to the details, it is still far from an ideal state where there is a clear and clean chain of command.”
Iraq’s Shiite Muslim majority came to power after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq toppled dictator Saddam Hussein and ended government control by the country’s Sunni Muslim minority. Successive Shiite-dominated governments over the years have forged closer ties with Shiite-majority Iran.
A number of mostly Shiite militias banded together in 2014 under an umbrella group known as the Popular Mobilization Forces. It was intended to counter the Sunni extremist Islamic State group, which had seized large parts of Iraq.
Some of the militias within the PMF received military and financial backing from Iran.
In recent years, the PMF agreed to come under the authority of the national security forces. But it has never been fully integrated, and some of its militias, including

“The Iraqi government suddenly lost its ability to stay out of the war,” he said.
Since late February, the militias have claimed responsibility for several attacks on U.S. interests in Iraq, including the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. The strikes came in response to an airstrike that hit the headquarters of one of the militias in the first days of the war and killed three people.
The militias blamed the strike on the United States and Israel.
At the same time, Iraq was going through a precarious political transition while forming a new government, a process that the Trump administration sought to influence.
This year, President Donald Trump threatened to withdraw U.S. support for Iraq if a leading Shiite politician, Nouri al-Maliki, was appointed as prime minister. Al-Maliki is a former prime minister who used to have U.S. backing.
But the relationship soured over the course of his eight years as prime minister as the United States increasingly saw him as aligned with Iran.
Kataib Hezbollah, continue to operate with a large degree of independence.
Some prominent militias have agreed to heed the prime minister’s order.
Powerful Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who leads a large political bloc in parliament, said he would fully integrate his Peace Brigades militia under the authority of the Iraqi military “out of concern for the public interest and in order to avoid the dangers threatening the country.”
The groups who rejected the order are demanding that the United States stop interfering in Iraq both militarily and politically.
The Guardians of the Blood Brigade, a militia which has previously claimed responsibility for attacks against U.S. targets in Iraq, said any move to exert tighter control over militias “must be accompanied by real steps that guarantee Iraq’s sovereignty and independence of decisionmaking.”
The prime minister’s efforts come at an especially sensitive time for Iraq, which for the past few years has seen economic growth owing to the relative stability of the country. It has remained mostly insulated from the wider conflicts gripping the Middle East over the past few years, which grew out of the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and the war in the Gaza Strip that followed.
Even as other Iran-backed groups across the Middle East carried out attacks on Israel, Iraq’s armed militias remained mostly on the sidelines. But that changed with the launch of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran in late February.
This time, Mansour said, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, which oversees that country’s regional proxies, moved swiftly to draw the Iran-linked Iraqi militias into the war as part of its strategy to launch counterattacks against the United States and Israel across the region.
As a result, al-Zaidi, a wealthy businessperson with no experience in international affairs, was appointed prime minister in late April, representing the largest political bloc in parliament. The Trump administration welcomed his nomination.
That did not stop the United States from ramping up pressure further on Iraq to distance itself from Iran and crack down on the militias.
After a meeting June 15 between al-Zaidi and U.S. diplomat Tom Barrack, they released a joint statement about Iraq carrying out “plans for ensuring the complete disarmament and disbandment of all armed groups and formations operating outside the authority and control of the Iraqi state.”
The statement said this was to “ensure that Iraqi territory cannot be used by any side to threaten regional peace.”

First came President Donald Trump’s “complete and total endorsement” of Abelardo De La Espriella, the right-wing candidate in Colombia’s presidential election.
Then came the support of Republican members of Congress, who asserted that De La Espriella would have U.S. interests in mind and helped mobilize Colombians abroad, who tend to lean conservative, to vote.
Then, just days before the election, U.S. immigration authorities detained an activist critical of De La Espriella and who had urged Colombians in the United States not to vote for him. The activist, according to a memo signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, had been interfering with U.S. foreign policy.
De La Espriella won Colombia’s presidential vote Sunday by a razor-thin margin — helped by ballots cast outside the country — and will take office in August. Experts say that even in an era when meddling in foreign elections has become increasingly common, the recent involvement of the Trump administration and its allies in Colombia’s election has been heavy-handed.
The detention of an activist who opposed a candidate endorsed by Trump was particularly striking, experts said.
“The attempt to quash dissent in a coordinated manner with the Trump administration, extending from Colombia to U.S. soil — I can’t think of anything in recent times, in the 21st century, that resembles that,” said Alexander Main, the director of international policy at the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington.
The State Department did not respond to requests for comment about the detention of the Colombian activist.
Espriella, a lawyer who had never held office, energized millions of Colombian voters, and he appeared likely to win even before Trump’s endorsement.
But in Colombia, President Gustavo Petro, a leftist and political opponent of De La Espriella, seized on Trump’s endorsement as he sought to sow doubt in the result, claiming that America’s involvement amounted to “cheating” that undermined the vote. This, in turn, set those in his inner circle rushing to stop the president from flat-out rejecting the result and calling for mass protests.
The day after the election, Petro flew to Panama for an event but was in such a frenzy over De La Espriella’s minuscule lead over his party’s candidate — about 250,000 votes, or less than 1 percentage point — that his top ministers convened an emergency meeting in Bogotá, Colombia, to address what Petro believed were irregularities, according to two people with direct knowledge of the events who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter.
All the while, Petro kept sending messages to his millions of followers on the social platform X, and supporters streamed into the streets of the capital for a march called “Electoral Steal,” even as his party’s candidate, Iván Cepe-

da, counseled calm.
On Wednesday, De La Espriella’s political opponent, Cepeda, conceded the election after electoral authorities completed a customary vote verification process.
The election pitted De La Espriella, a wealthy lawyer, against Cepeda, a senator, peace negotiator and stalwart of the left. De La Espriella used AI-generated images of a tiger as his campaign avatar and promised to “disembowel” political opponents, crush “narco-terrorists” and strengthen ties to the United States. He lived in Florida for more than a decade and was recently naturalized as a U.S. citizen.
Esteban González Pons, the head of the European Union Electoral Observation Mission in Colombia, told reporters Tuesday in response to a question about Trump’s endorsement and the presence of U.S. lawmakers in Colombia that claims of international interference were “absolutely irrelevant” to the election because “the Colombian people had voted freely.”
On Election Day, two members of the U.S. Congress were in Colombia to stump for De La Espriella. Rep. María Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., speaking in the city of Barranquilla, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, told reporters, “We know very well that Cepeda will be Petro No. 2, so that’s why we’re with De La Espriella,” adding that a “profound closeness” with the United States was vital for Colombia’s prosperity.
Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, who was born in Colombia and has emerged as De La Espriella’s biggest champion in Washington, also traveled to Barranquilla as an election monitor. He had raised alarms for weeks over Petro’s fraud allegations and supposed vote-buying by the left.
The Republican lawmakers had spent weeks encouraging Colombians in the United States to vote, which
analysts say helped tip the results in De La Espriella’s favor. In an election that saw a record-high turnout, the diaspora vote was, by most calculations, the decisive factor: De La Espriella received around 65% of the total overseas vote and around 80% in the United States.
On Monday, Moreno, after meeting with De La Espriella, appeared to dangle a carrot: If Petro behaved for the next several weeks and did not interfere with the peaceful transfer of power, Moreno told a Colombian news outlet that it was “quite probable” that the U.S. Treasury could remove him from a sanctions list. He was placed on the list last year after objecting to the Trump administration’s military strikes on boats it has said are carrying drugs.
The administration has not publicly commented on the case of the progressive Colombian activist detained last week by U.S. immigration authorities. In an interview with a prominent Colombian journalist Wednesday, the activist, Franklin Humberto Coral Garrido, better known as Beto Coral, said he had an open asylum case in the United States that gave him the legal right to remain in the country.
Speaking from a detention center in Louisiana, Coral called his arrest “political persecution” and added, “My political activism focuses on Colombia, nothing related to the internal politics of the United States.”
Coral was arrested by immigration authorities the same day Rubio signed a memo that said he could be deported from the United States.
In the memo, a copy of which was obtained by The New York Times, Rubio noted that Coral arrived in the United States in 2015 on a tourist visa and had a pending asylum application. But “Coral Garrido has used his presence in the United States to conduct political activity in support of the Petro government” and has advocated against a candidate for president, Rubio wrote.
The efforts by U.S. officials and members of Congress to shape Colombia’s election have stirred outrage among rights groups and Democrats in Congress, who last week wrote a letter to top officials calling out what they said was “brazen interference.”
It was once considered taboo for heads of state and other politicians to make public statements on foreign elections. Increasingly, though, such public intervention is becoming a regular part of global politics — on the right and the left — with Trump playing a major role in that trend.
Presidents Javier Milei of Argentina and Daniel Noboa of Ecuador, both supporters of Trump, have also jumped in to endorse De La Espriella. Jennie Lincoln of the Carter Center, which monitors elections around the world, called this foreign involvement in the Colombian vote part of “an egregious trend of interference.”
Lincoln is the head of a mission in Colombia to observe the vote, and she pointed out that the Organization of American States, a regional body, prohibits foreign interference in domestic affairs.
Trump, who had repeatedly posted about De La Espriella on Truth Social, said Monday that he had spoken with him by phone to congratulate him.
“He’s going to be a great president,” Trump told reporters at the White House, adding that the U.S. relationship with Colombia would be “much better.”

More than 2,000 executives and business leaders from Puerto Rico’s food industry gathered Thursday at the Puerto Rico Convention Center for the presentation of Radiografía del Consumidor 2026, the island’s leading annual study of consumer behavior commissioned by the Puerto Rico Marketing, Industry and Food Distribution Chamber (MIDA).
The study was unveiled during the opening of the MIDA Conference & Food Show, which features more than 550 exhibitors from Puerto Rico and abroad.
This year’s findings reveal that inflation and economic uncertainty continue to influence household spending habits. According to Richard Valdés, chair of the Consumer XRay Committee, 45% of respondents reported annual incomes below $20,000, while nearly one-quarter earn $10,000 or less. Food spending represents 12.7% of household income in Puerto Rico, compared with 8.1% in the United States.
Despite persistent inflation, average monthly spending on food declined by 5%, or about $19, while spending on household products dropped 14%. MIDA Executive Vice President Manuel Reyes Alfonso attributed the trend to a growing “psychology of uncertainty,” as consumers become more cautious with their spending.
Concerns about potential reductions
to the Nutritional Assistance Program (PAN) and Medicare remain widespread. The study found that 43% of respondents receive PAN benefits, which support approximately 1.2 million residents. Older adults expressed the greatest concern, with many indicating they would need to reduce food purchases if benefits were cut.
Consumers are also planning their purchases more carefully. Ninety-two percent said they check what they already have at home before shopping, while 73% use written shopping lists. Half compare prices among supermarkets, and 43% review store websites before making purchases.
Shopping frequency has declined as well. Large monthly grocery trips fell by 11%, while smaller refill trips decreased from three to two per month. Price remains the primary factor in selecting a supermarket, although product variety and fresh produce quality have become increasingly important.
Health and wellness continue to shape purchasing decisions. Consumers spend an average of $95 per month on wellness-related products and services, including gym memberships and supplements. The report also found increased consumption of protein-rich foods, with protein yogurts and shakes experiencing significant sales growth.
Support for locally produced goods remains strong. Ninety-seven percent of respondents said they purchase products made in Puerto Rico, and 77% identify them through the “Hecho en Puerto Rico” seal.

Food industry executives, retailers and suppliers gathered at the Puerto Rico Convention Center for the opening of the MIDA Conference & Food Show, one of the Caribbean’s largest trade events.
The study also found growth in online grocery shopping, which increased from 16% to 19% of consumers. Food products are among the most common purchases influenced by social media platforms such as TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
The MIDA Conference & Food Show continues through June 27 with educational sessions, networking events and presentations from industry experts.

Firma Ilegible, Alguacil. ***

The 2026 Women’s Softball Premier League (LPSF) regular season enters its decisive chapter this week, with six teams still battling for postseason positioning.
The regular season will conclude on Sunday, June 28, with both the league championship race and the fourth and final semifinal berth still up for grabs. The “Road to Glory” semifinal stage is scheduled to begin on July 3.
The Valencianas of Juncos and the Prodigiosas of Sabana Grande are tied atop the standings with identical 11-4 records, while the two-time defending champion Bravas of Cidra remain within striking distance at 9-4.
The fight for the final playoff spot is even tighter. The Caribeñas of Salinas and the Leonas of Ponce are deadlocked in fourth place with matching 7-7 records, while the Grises of Humacao remain mathematically alive at 5-11. Meanwhile, the Costaneras of Guánica have been eliminated from postseason contention after falling to 0-13 on the season.
The final week of competition begins Thursday, June 25, with three games on the schedule. The Bravas will visit the Caribeñas in Salinas, the Grises will travel to Juncos to face the Valencianas, and the Leonas will take on the Costaneras in Guánica.
Action continues Friday, June 26, with Guánica visiting Sabana Grande at 6:30 p.m. and Cidra facing Humacao at 7:00 p.m.
Five more contests are scheduled for Saturday, June 27. Ponce will play a doubleheader in Salinas beginning at 4:00 p.m., Sabana Grande will visit Juncos at 5:00 p.m., and Cidra will travel to Guánica for a doubleheader starting at 6:00 p.m.

nis Federation (ITF) Level 3 coach, and National Tutor. He will be assisted by Sara Snyder, who was part of Puerto Rico’s Billie Jean King Cup delegation in 2022.
“We are extremely proud of the athletes who will represent Puerto Rico in Paraguay. This team combines international experience with top collegiate talent. We are confident our players will compete with passion, commitment, and pride as they represent our flag,” said Rosa Martínez, Executive Director of the PRTA.
Martínez also emphasized the significance of the event for the continued growth of women’s tennis in Puerto Rico.
“The Billie Jean King Cup is the most important international team competition in women’s tennis. Competing on this stage provides invaluable experience for our players and continues to strengthen Puerto Rico’s presence in the international tennis community,” she said.
This year’s Americas Group II field includes the Bahamas, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay.
The competition format features two groups of four teams playing round-robin matches from July 1-3. Classification and relegation playoffs will take place on July 4.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the promotion playoffs, where the two nations earning promotion to the Americas Group I for the 2027 season will be determined. Teams losing the relegation playoffs will drop to Americas Group III.
“We know the level of competition will be extremely high, but our players have shown they are ready for the challenge. Our goal is to compete at our best and fight for one of the promotion spots,” Martínez concluded.

The Valencianas of Juncos are tied atop the LPSF standings with the Prodigiosas of Sabana Grande, as both teams hold identical 11-4 records. The two-time defending champion Bravas of Cidra remain firmly in contention, sitting just behind the leaders at 9-4.
