Abroad multisector coalition warned Thursday that Puerto Rico’s public education system is being deliberately weakened as the Department of Education (DE) continues channeling public funds to private entities through the Office of Public Alliance Schools, which oversees charter school contracts.
According to the coalition, 21 charter schools have been authorized since 2018, with five additional schools under consideration. Data disclosed by the DE shows the agency allocates nearly $50 million annually to finance charter operations.
Teachers Federation President Mercedes Martínez said the proposed expansion would deepen the diversion of public resources.
“If the five additional charter schools are approved, the Department will be diverting a total of $60 million in public funds -- an estimated $2 million per new school -- to continue expanding a privatization model that has proven to lack adequate oversight,” she said.
A recent report by the Office of the Inspector General found significant deficiencies in the DE’s oversight of charter school performance. The report concluded that those shortcomings hinder the agency’s ability to enforce accountability and required the Office of Public Alliance Schools to adopt 10 corrective actions.
Among the findings: the agency failed to prepare and submit the annual reports required under Article 13.04 of Law 85-2018 for fiscal years 2022, 2023 and 2024. At the time of the report’s publication, the DE also could not demonstrate that it had completed the report for fiscal year 2025-2026.

In 2022, the DE was ordered to cancel a charter contract after it was revealed that one of the school’s incorporators had been convicted of embezzlement in the U.S.

“The Department is facilitating educational displacement by opening charter schools near existing public schools and granting them broad operational advantages -- curricular flexibility, administrative autonomy, regulatory exemptions, and differentiated conditions unavailable to public schools,” Martínez said. “This is contributing to school closures and the progressive weakening of the public system.”
The DE recently confirmed it is evaluating additional public school closures, citing declining enrollment and lack of funds. The coalition strongly opposes the closures.
Community leader Jeffrey Rivera Sanabria of Residencial Luis Llorens Torres in Santurce said the consequences are deeply felt in neighborhoods.
In fiscal year 2023, the 12 charter schools then in operation received over $40 million, yet their use of funds was not audited. An investigation by the Centro de Periodismo Investigativo found that LEAP STEAM + E Academy received $9.3 million between 2021 and 2024, but its founder reported that the Office of Public Alliance Schools had conducted no formal evaluations -- only an informal monitoring visit.

“It hurts to see our public schools -- the heart of our communities -- closing while millions are diverted to privatizing projects that lack accountability,” he said. “Every school that shuts down is a community losing a refuge, a family losing support, a child losing opportunities.”
The coalition also criticized the government for claiming insufficient funds to honor the teacher career ladder, which would benefit roughly 8,000 educators. The government has estimated it would need around $90 million to implement the salary adjustments.
“It is alarming that tens of millions are available for charter schools while the government insists it cannot fund the teacher career track,” Martínez said. “Public education is a fundamental right, not a business.”

U.S. Reps. Nydia M. Velázquez and Alexandria Oca sio‑Cortez, both New York Democrats, on Thursday sharply criticized new Puerto Rico status legislation introduced by Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández Rivera, accusing him of undermining years of congressional efforts to advance a meaningful decolonization process for the island.
In a joint statement, the New York lawmakers -- who have led self‑determination initiatives for Puerto Rico across the last three congressional terms said Hernández Rivera’s bill “co‑opt ed” their work and reintroduced an option that would preserve the island’s current territorial arrangement. They argued that any proposal allowing Puerto Rico to remain under U.S. plenary powers contradicts both historical reality and the consensus emerging among Democrats in Congress. Puerto Rico is a U.S. commonwealth whose residents are under the plenary powers of Congress, have a non voting representative in Congress and do not pay federal taxes.
“Non‑territorial, non‑colonial options are the only options viable for true decolonization,” the lawmakers said, noting that their previous bills were shaped through meetings, hearings and consultations with Puerto Rican academics, legal experts, community leaders and members of the diaspora.

Velázquez and Ocasio-Cortez said the resident com missioner’s measure reverses that progress by including the continuation of the existing commonwealth status, which they described as a colonial condition that Congress has increasingly acknowledged must end.
“More and more members have come to acknowledge that the current colonial condition of Puerto Rico is a moral stain on our nation’s history,” they said. “Our country cannot claim to be a bastion of democracy as we continue to hold colonies in the Caribbean and the Pacific.”
The lawmakers also argued that the bill ignores key legal
precedents, including the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in United States v. Vaello-Madero, which reaffirmed that Puerto Rico remains subject to Congress’ broad territorial authority. By denying that reality, they said, the legislation “erases historical realities” and “subverts Democratic consensus.”
Velázquez and Ocasio-Cortez framed the resident commis sioner’s proposal as driven by “individual political aspirations,” warning that it risks derailing serious efforts to resolve Puerto Rico’s political status after more than a century under U.S. control.
Hernández Rivera, a national Democrat, is the president of the pro commonwealth Popular Democratic Party.
“We stand together in opposing this legislation and will continue to fight for a serious decolonization process for Puerto Ricans,” they said.
The introduction of Hernández Rivera’s bill marks the latest chapter in a long‑running debate in Washington over how and whether Congress should structure a binding process for Puerto Ricans to choose among non‑territorial options such as statehood, independence, or free association.
Hernández Rivera has argued that his measure allows each faction to advocate for its preferred option “without traps or tricks” and on a level playing field. He also maintained that the bill mirrors legislation passed by the U.S. House in 2022 but adds the commonwealth option and a process for proposing reforms.
The resident commissioner’s proposal was introduced alongside U.S. Reps. Wesley Bell (D-Mo.), Derek Tran (D-Calif.) and Val Hoyle (D-Ore.), according to his office.
At press time, the resident commissioner had not yet re sponded publicly to the lawmakers’ criticism.

Public Affairs Secretary Jean Peña Payano announced Thursday that Gov. Jenniffer González Colón will soon announce administrative changes at the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) amid the water crisis affecting thousands of clients in the greater San Juan metropolitan area.
During an interview on the Primer Round program, Peña Payano confirmed that the governor is evaluating adjustments to the public corporation’s management structure.
“It must be adjustments that she believes will improve the administration of the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority,” the official said when questioned about possible changes at the public corporation.
Peña Payano said the governor will determine when she will make the changes public, although he acknowledged that there is already an intention on González Colón’s part to implement administrative modifications at PRASA.
“I would wait, and the governor said that she is going to make some administrative changes,” he said.
The official noted that the final determination will rest with the PRASA governing board, the body responsible for approving appointments.
The remarks come at a time when the public corporation is under scrutiny for failing to deal with water service inter ruptions affecting residents of San Juan, Guaynabo, Carolina, Trujillo Alto and other municipalities in the metropolitan region for weeks.
When questioned whether the current management of PRASA still has the governor’s confidence, Peña Payano replied that “at the moment it does have the confidence of the governor,” although he insisted that additional an nouncements will be made soon regarding the utility’s administrative future.
So far, La Fortaleza has not specified which positions would be impacted by the changes or when the new ap pointments will be officially announced.
Governor announces $216 million investment to modernize water plants
A day earlier, González Colón said in a recorded message that her administration is addressing electrical and potable water infrastructure problems caused by decades of underinvestment and a lack of maintenance.
“Two of the biggest challenges I have faced as gov ernor are the problems with electrical and potable water infrastructure,” the governor said. “Both stem from a lack of investment and maintenance over decades.”
In the message, the governor noted that the Sergio Cuevas water treatment plant in Trujillo Alto is the primary water production facility for the metropolitan area, serving more than 190,000 customers.
“However, it hasn’t been modernized in over 10 years,” she said. “Its equipment is operating while damaged and well past its useful life.”
González Colón also noted that the Finca Rosso facility in Bayamón pumps water to more than 60,000 customers in Bayamón, Guaynabo and San Juan, and suffered severe dam age last year due to voltage fluctuations from LUMA Energy.
Regarding the Enrique Ortega filtration plant in Toa Alta, the governor said power outages caused by LUMA took the system offline.
“This didn’t happen overnight, and it won’t be solved through improvisation either,” she said.
González Colón said her administration identified and launched projects to address the infrastructure supporting the potable water system.
“Work is already underway to rebuild, restore water capacity, and strengthen our system,” she said.
The governor stated that $216 million is being invested to modernize plants, part of a total of over $7 billion in potable water projects across various municipalities.

Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández Rivera announced Thursday that U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) has joined as a co-sponsor of the Puerto Rico Nutrition Assistance Fairness Act (S. 3958), marking the first time in recent history that a GOP senator has supported legislation to bring the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to Puerto Rico.
Hernández Rivera made the announcement during a speech in the Puerto Rico House of Representatives, where he held up a graduation cap given to him by University of Puerto Rico students, covered in messages about hunger and the difficult choices many of them face.
Hernández Rivera said the new support reflects a shift in momentum for the island’s long-standing effort to transition from its current Nutrition Assistance Program (PAN by its acronym in Spanish) to SNAP. He noted that the past week brought a $78 million increase for the program, surpassing last year’s $48 million boost, and that the SNAP bill now has more than double the backing it received during the previous four-year term. He emphasized that securing a Republican co-sponsor in the Senate represents a breakthrough that had not been possible before. Hernández Rivera met with Wicker in Washington last week, a meeting he credits with helping secure the senator’s support.
Wicker’s decision strengthens the bipartisan coalition led by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), who, together
with Hernández, has attracted 19 Senate co-sponsors. The Coalition for Food Security of Puerto Rico, which has organized more than 40 organizations behind the measure, described Wicker’s support as a significant step forward. Its director, Lilian Rodríguez López, said the coalition has long advocated for greater equity and inclusion for Puerto Rico within federal nutrition programs and praised the resident commissioner for helping consolidate bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress as the Farm Bill advances in the Senate.

groceries, and its funding automatically adjusts based on economic conditions, food prices and poverty levels. States also receive federal administrative funding to operate the program.
Puerto Rico, however, has been excluded from SNAP since 1982, when Congress removed the island from the program and replaced it with a capped block grant as part of federal budget-cutting measures. The result is PAN, which does not expand automatically during recessions or emergencies and provides lower benefits than SNAP. Because the block grant is fixed, Puerto Rico cannot increase assistance when poverty rises unless Congress intervenes. The island also receives no federal administrative funding, forcing the local government to absorb those costs.

Executive Director Poincaré Díaz Peña urged the public on Thursday to monitor their bank accounts and cards following a cybersecurity incident reported by Evertec.
“Cybersecurity incidents can affect any organization, so it is important for the public to remain alert and adopt preventive measures to protect their personal and financial information,” Díaz Peña said in a written statement.
According to information released by Evertec, an unauthorized party gained access to data stored on a platform operated by a third-party provider used for monitoring system performance.
Potentially compromised information includes payment card numbers and, in some cases, names, expiration dates, dates of birth, phone numbers, and other contact information.
Díaz Peña said the best defense against such incidents is an informed public that verifies the authenticity of messages received, uses strong passwords, and activates additional security mechanisms on their accounts.
PRITS recommended that consumers regularly review bank account and credit card transactions, pay attention
to communications from their financial institutions, and immediately report any suspicious activity.
It also warned of potential fraud attempts via emails, text messages, or calls appearing to come from financial institutions or companies related to the incident.
“Regarding any communication requesting personal information, access credentials, or banking data, we recommend verifying directly with the financial institution using official channels,” Díaz Peña added.
As preventive measures, PRITS recommended using unique passwords for each account, enabling two-step verification or multi factor authentication, being wary of unsolicited links, and keeping devices and applications updated.
The agency also urged people to review account statements and credit reports, protect personal data, and avoid sharing sensitive information without verifying the requester’s legitimacy.
Díaz Peña noted that the incident is unrelated to Puerto Rico government systems or platforms.
“Events of this nature highlight the importance of continuing to develop and implement the accountability mechanisms outlined in Law 40-2024 for technology service providers involved in handling and processing sensitive information,” the official said.
PRITS stated that it will continue to promote cybersecurity education and awareness to strengthen digital protection for the public and foster a culture of prevention against cyber threats.

Latino voters shifted sharply toward President Donald Trump in each of the past two presidential elections, a trend that shocked and confounded Democrats.
Many in the party have been asking: Why did this happen, and what can we do about it?
Those questions are even more urgent now for Democrats, with Latino voters set to play a key midterm role in deciding who wins control of Congress. They make up at least 20% of the population in a majority of the most competitive House districts. And Latinos also account for a significant slice of voters in two crucial Senate races — North Carolina and Georgia.
Way to Win, a Democratic-aligned group that focuses on the Sun Belt, including Latino voters, released a new report Wednesday that offers some possible answers for the party.
One conclusion: “The fastest way to lose these communities is to treat their ethnicity as the most interesting thing about them,” the report said.
It’s worth lingering on that statement. Some Democrats have long treated Latino voters as a kind of monolithic group. They’ve focused on Spanish-language advertising, brought mariachi bands to campaign rallies, and sprinkled Spanish into their speeches — all in an effort to attract a growing demographic that is essential to a winning national coalition.
This report suggests that the reality is much more complicated.
‘Hustle culture is dead’
One reason is apathy. Previous research from the group has suggested that Latino voters chose to sit out the 2024 presidential election at higher rates than any other demographic. In the Sun Belt, which includes heavily Latino states such as Texas, Arizona and Nevada, Latino voters were much more likely than other ethnic groups to cast a ballot in 2020, but then skip voting in 2024.
Much of that had to do with a deep-seated frustration that appears to have only gotten worse. Way to Win interviewed 122 Latino voters and found that:
— Almost half did not trust any level of government.
“It’s starting to erode and it’s also starting to erode trust,” Gavito said. “People feel like we’re putting in and not getting anything out. They believe there’s a reciprocity the government should be creating.”
At the same time, most Latino voters define themselves by their values, not their race and ethnicity. When participants were asked to describe who they were, they spoke about faith, family, compassion, hard work and resilience.
But there was an important and telling exception — when voters saw persistent threats. Several respondents said the past year had raised intense fears about being detained by immigration agents based on their appearance or accent.
A shifting political moment
So where does that leave Democrats?
They have to simultaneously acknowledge that these voters feel under threat because of their ethnicity, Gavito said, and are desperate to see that their hard work is paying off.
“Don’t come at me with this cultural pandering,” she said. “I want to know how you’re going to fight for me.”
That said, Gavito added, Latino voters do not always bristle if familiar cultural references are used in politics.
— When asked to pick one word to describe the government, nearly every participant chose a negative one.
— Many believed that “elites” deliberately stoked mistrust and benefited from it.
— Many have stopped believing that anyone in charge takes their responsibility seriously.
While those interviewed are just a slice and may not be fully representative, these attitudes are far more negative compared with similar research done just three years ago. At the time, Way to Win researchers found that most Latinos believed they could “get ahead if they worked hard and played by the rules.” Now, these interviews “reveal a sentiment that hustle culture is dead,” said Tory Gavito, the president of Way to Win.
For decades, research on Latino voters has shown them maintaining a durable optimism, but several polls have shown that this optimism is fading.
In California, Xavier Becerra began embracing the moniker “Tío Xavier” in the final weeks of the primary race for governor. Now, he appears well on his way to becoming the state’s first Latino governor in modern history.
Just a year ago, immigration raids and protests engulfed Southern California. Even now, many residents talk about carrying their passports with them at all times, so that they can prove their citizenship.
“There is an awareness of the racial animus within the Trump administration and the precarity of the moment,” Gavito said.
But even if Democrats manage to win back some Latino voters this fall, there is little reason to think that this would guarantee party fealty. The last several elections have shown that Latinos are arguably the most pivotal swing demographic in the country.
Figuring out how to appeal to these voters is central to both parties’ futures.

The financial forecast for Social Security worsened this year, according to the annual financial report released earlier this week by the program’s trustees. If Congress does not develop a plan to shore up the program, it will need to cut benefits for millions of Americans in just a little more than six years.
Social Security’s deteriorating finances have long been thought of as a future problem — for another president, or another Congress, to resolve. But now, it is creeping ever closer because funds will run out before the end of the next president’s term.
The Social Security Old-Age and Survivors Insurance trust fund, which helps pay retiree and survivor benefits to more than 68 million beneficiaries, is now expected to run out of money at the end of 2032, one quarter earlier than projected last year. That means incoming revenue would be enough to pay only 78% of benefits, in other words, a reduction of 22%, according to Tuesday’s report.

But that situation would come to fruition only if lawmakers don’t act to strengthen the program before then, through some combination of higher taxes or reduced checks.
“This should be a wake-up call: Congress needs to act,” said Myechia Minter-Jordan, CEO of AARP. “Americans have worked hard and paid into Social Security their entire lives, and they deserve to count on it when they retire. No family should see any cuts to what they’ve earned in Social Security.”

bills. Future spending in other parts of the Medicare program, which is not financed using a dedicated fund, is expected to increase. That spending growth on doctors’ visits and prescription drugs will nevertheless increase the federal budget deficit and long-term federal debts.
Social Security has long faced a financing shortfall, but it has worsened in the short term for several reasons.
The trustees assumed that fertility and immigration rates would be lower, posing a drag on the program. And the trust fund will collect less tax revenue from Social Security beneficiaries because of the big tax and policy bill passed last summer. The trustees also assumed that workers’ earnings would grow faster, helping the program’s finances.
Some experts believe that the Trump administration’s aggressive stance on immigration may not be fully reflected in the report, which assumes lawful immigration at levels similar to those during the Biden administration and only a short-term reduction in “temporary and unlawfully present” immigrants.

That “would make the Social Security picture even worse, because immigrant workers strengthen Social Security’s finances by contributing to the trust fund through payroll taxes,” said Kathleen Romig, a senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a research group.
Social Security must also confront its more long-standing challenges, driven in part by demographic changes. Dwindling birthrates mean fewer workers are paying taxes into the program, all while thousands of baby boomers are retiring daily and collecting their benefits for longer periods.
In addition, a larger share of the country’s wage base is not subject to payroll taxes — Social Security’s lifeblood — compared with years past.
The taxes are applied up to only $184,500 in income, and rising income inequality means a greater share of Americans’ earnings exceeds that cap and is not taxed.
A separate trust fund, which finances Social Security disability benefits for another 8.1 million people, is on more solid ground. It will be able to pay its bills for the next 75 years, the report said.
Many Americans believe Social Security is in shakier shape than it actually is: A recent AARP poll found that 39% of respondents believed that the program would not be able to make any payments when the trust fund ran dry.
There’s a broad misunderstanding about how the program works. It is generally financed by a combination of payroll taxes, ordinary income taxes on benefits and interest earned from the trust fund. If the amount of taxes collected exceeds the amount paid out, that surplus is held in the trust fund. And if benefits exceed the taxes collected, that gap is covered by the money in the fund.
“Simply put, the trust fund works like a personal checking account — money in, money out,”
Jonathan Schwabish, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, said this year in a report.
But since the early 2010s, benefits paid have exceeded the taxes received, which has led the trust fund balance to shrink, he added. Once the fund is empty, the program will be able to pay benefits using only the taxes it has received.
By law, Social Security (unlike parts of Medicare) cannot use money from the federal budget’s general revenue to pay benefits.
Earlier Tuesday, two members of Congress — Reps. Tom Cole, R-Okla., and Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y. — introduced a bill that would create an independent commission made up of 13 members appointed by the president and congressional leaders in both parties. The commission would be charged with finding “common-sense solutions” to bolster the program’s long-term survival.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he wants to protect and strengthen Social Security but has not come forth with realistic plans. During a Cabinet meeting on May 27, he said he believed that reducing rampant fraud would be enough to put the program’s finances back on track, echoing false ideas spread by Elon Musk and others last year, including the claim that millions of dead people were receiving payments.
“I think we have a chance to save Social Security without doing anything to it,” Trump said last month, “by just the numbers of fraudulent people on Social Security — people that are 115 years old, 125 years old, getting payments.”
Those allegations have been debunked, including in a New York Times investigation.

In fact, one reason this war may linger is because most of the leaders of these countries and militias know that history has its eyes on them and the minute the guns fall silent there will be a moral, political and economic accounting that will be devastating for each one of these fools.
Let’s go around the table. Hamas started this latest Middle East conflict on Oct. 7, 2023, with an invasion of Israel from the Gaza Strip in which in one day it murdered more than 1,200 people — men, women and children — and abducted more than 250. What was Hamas’ war aim? As far as we can tell, its fantasy was that by invading Israel it would spark a regional uprising in which “resistance” forces — including Hezbollah, Iran and even some Arab nations — would help it to annihilate the Jewish state.
Hamas did not launch this war with any peaceful intent — that is, with a gun in one hand and a peace map in the other showing how two indigenous people, Jews and Palestinians, might coexist between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. No, the only maps Hamas fighters carried showed them where to find the most
Jews to kill in the border communities they invaded, including at elementary schools and a youth center.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and his far-right government of Jewish supremacists launched a war of annihilation right back. The only map he offered was one in which only Jews would control the area from the river to the sea.
Because Hamas embedded itself inside Gaza’s civilian population, and because it refused to allow Gaza residents to take shelter inside the hundreds of miles of war-fighting tunnels it had dug under Gaza, the civilian population was ravaged by Israel’s ferocious retaliation. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, Israel killed more than 70,000 people — a majority civilians, including thousands of children — and wounded at least 170,000. That’s a shameful total — about 10% of the approximately 2.2 million people living in Gaza before the war.
Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar reportedly described such losses as “necessary sacrifices” to advance the Palestinian cause globally. It worked. His human sacrifice of Palestinian civilians has delegitimized Israel around the world to a degree never seen before. The Jewish people’s movement for self-determination in their biblical homeland — called Zionism — has become a dirty word on college campuses and in liberal political parties, and increasingly in some conservative ones. Israeli artists and academics are simply no longer welcome in many corners of the world today. Israel’s brutal war has also given cover for antisemites to crawl out from under the rocks.
No surprise. Because, though Netanyahu defeated Hamas militarily, he never nurtured or welcomed a moderate Palestinian alternative. So, killing all those Palestinian civilians during the war looked to the rest of the world just like that: killing, pure and simple, not to clear the way for better Palestinian governance but to clear the way for NO Palestinians in Gaza.
Let’s do the math: Israel has spent billions of dollars, destroyed its international reputation, lost much of its support in the liberal parties in America and Europe — and Hamas is still in charge in 40% of Gaza. There is today zero prospect of peace with the Palestinians. Many of these decisions were made so Netanyahu could retain the support of the far-right extremists keeping him in power and avoid a possible jail sentence on corruption charges. Now you know why Bibi is doing everything he can to quash a court-led Israeli inquiry into the failure to prevent the Oct. 7 attacks that could undermine his reelection chances.
their own country, and Hezbollah has exposed itself for what it is: a mercenary army acting in the interests of its Iranian paymasters, not the interests of Lebanon or even Lebanese Shiites.
So, don’t hold your breath for a commission of inquiry from Hezbollah.
As for the Iran front, it is now clear that President Donald Trump and Netanyahu started a war with the Islamic regime to topple it by aerial bombardments and had no Plan B, if Plan A failed — which it did.
Iran, alas, had a Plan B and a Plan C. Once the regime survived the initial U.S.-Israeli attack — albeit with the loss of dozens of senior officials and military commanders and much military equipment — Iran blockaded the Strait of Hormuz, choking off some 20% of global crude oil supplies. It also attacked America’s Gulf Arab allies, in effect sending Trump the message that “if you kill us, we will destabilize them and then you will really see a global oil crisis.”
Iran’s shadowy leaders want no part of any commission of inquiry, because while they did have Plans B and C to ensure that their regime survived, they had no Plan D for the Iranian people to thrive. The first question an Iranian inquiry commission would surely ask would be: “Exactly what have you achieved from the billions of dollars you have spent trying to build a nuclear weapon and to extend Iranian imperialism over Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Syria and the Arab Gulf states?” Iran’s leaders know that question is coming from their own people, so it’s better for them to keep the war going so they don’t have to answer it. (No surprise to me that they just shot down, according to Trump, a U.S. helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz.)
As for Trump, he can still salvage something from this war if he can persuade Tehran to turn over all its near bomb-grade uranium. I hope so. That would be important. But at this stage, it happens only if Trump gives a new lease on life to this terrible regime in Tehran. That is because Iran will surely not agree to abandon its nuclear materials unless Trump, at least tacitly, accepts Iran’s de facto control over the Strait of Hormuz (Iran’s weapon of mass disruption), the transfer to Iran of billions of dollars in frozen assets and the lifting of economic sanctions. A U.S. president who promised Iran’s “unconditional surrender” will be delivering its unlimited survival. I don’t think Trump will want any congressional commission of inquiry examining the art of that deal.
Bottom line: The war that started on Oct. 7, 2023, was launched and prosecuted by very bad men, who consistently put their own interests and fantasies ahead of their people’s simple dreams for a decent life. If you are looking for a ray of hope, it would be that the pain of it all forces them all into a ceasefire. And then that this ceasefire creates space for politics — for the people’s inquiry commissions that say to the leaders of Iran, Gaza, Hezbollah, Israel and America who made this mess: “What were you thinking? There was “Bravo Gustavo!” a musical tribute that John Williams wrote for his friend Gustavo Dudamel, the outgoing music and artistic director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which premiered the piece while Williams cheered from his fifthrow seat at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
There was a new production of Richard Wagner’s “Die Walküre,” led by Dudamel and with sets by Frank Gehry, another friend and collaborator of the conductor’s.
And last week, the audience laughed and clapped as Dudamel nestled his head onto the shoulder of cellist Yo-Yo Ma (also a friend) as they sat together and played music boxes during the premiere of Angélica Negrón’s concerto “Mundillo.”
In all, Dudamel’s farewell to Disney Hall was a three-week extravaganza of concerts, operas, stage-filling choruses, poetry, commissions by new composers (with an emphasis on Latino artists), favorites by old composers and a blur of curtain calls that ended Sunday. It was an appropriately frenzied encapsulation of his time in Los Angeles, 17 years in which he established himself as a force not only in music but also in the life of this city.
“All of these three weeks embrace
— are a symbol — of all of what we have been doing these years,” Dudamel said in a recent interview between rehearsals. “This orchestra is a very virtuosic orchestra with a very warm sound, open to be flexible to play all styles of music. Maybe that can be part of the legacy that I can leave, and also what is coming from the past.”
At the concert Sunday, Dudamel received an ovation — from the crowd, his players and the chorus — that lasted for nearly 12 minutes. He wove through the orchestra, hugging and shaking hands, before blowing a final kiss to the players, waving to his audience and exiting to the left of the stage.
Dudamel has another goodbye to come at the Hollywood Bowl in August, with his truly final concerts concluding an exit that has stretched out for nearly three years. Soon after those performances, he will officially begin his tenure as music and artistic director of the New York Philharmonic.
For whatever questions there may have been when the Los Angeles Philharmonic took a chance on Dudamel, a 28-yearold Venezuelan, in 2009, he has left a major imprint on the orchestra. He has appointed 54 of the orchestra’s 106 members. He helped established the Youth Orchestra of
Los Angeles as a beacon for young aspiring musicians, particularly from the less wealthy parts of the region, and a source of pride for their families. (Six current and past members of the youth orchestra appeared at Sunday’s concert to recite “América,” a work of prose and poetry by Mexican novelist Guillermo Arriaga.)
Dudamel has embraced canonical, audience-favorite composers like Mahler, Mozart and Beethoven. But he championed

with perhaps even more fervor adventurous composers such as John Adams, Philip Glass and Ellen Reid, who wrote “Earth Between Oceans” for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic this season.
“Some musicians or conductors might have felt afraid of the way the piece is sort of crazy,” she said. “He leaned into the energy of it. And the orchestra threw it back to him — in both cities. He is striving to make different pathways for people, to keep the music alive and keep it contemporary” in all the ways he can.
Since Dudamel’s first year in Los Angeles, when he presented the Americas and Americans festival, he has highlighted music by Latino composers, such as Roberto Sierra and Gabriela Ortiz — who has received nine commissions from the orchestra under Dudamel, including “Mujer Arena,” which premiered Thursday.
“He has been remarkably open to
ideas, out-of-the-box ideas,” said Esa-Pekka Salonen, Dudamel’s predecessor, who led the Philharmonic from 1992-2009 and was in the audience Sunday. “If you look at his legacy, apart from very great concerts, there were lots of commissions, a really intense commitment to new music and new composers. His support for Latin American composers has been stunning. He’s going to leave a very, very vibrant, dynamic orchestra to his successor.”
And Dudamel, with his unusually high profile — a celebrity in a city filled with celebrities — changed the way people thought about classical music in Los Angeles. He challenged the elitist stereotype of the intimidating orchestra leaders; Salonen said that when Dudamel once took him barhopping on the east side of Los Angeles, ending at a bar vibrating with salsa music, “everybody knew him.”
“The Latino community,” Salonen added, “people talk to him, and with such pride.”
Dudamel said that from his earliest days, Los Angeles audiences proved receptive to music that swerved beyond the comfortable classical diet. By the time he steps down, he will have conducted 62 premieres of works commissioned by the Philharmonic and led programs featuring Latino music, jazz, salsa and pop. He collaborated with the Deaf West Theater on a production of Beethoven’s opera “Fidelio” for hearing and deaf operagoers.
“When I came here, a lot of this music was kind of exotic,” Dudamel said. “And I think it’s not anymore exotic. Right now, it’s something that has become part of the repertoire.”
Dudamel and the Philharmonic performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2025, sharing a bill with, among others, LL Cool J and Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters. He took the youth orchestra to the Super Bowl in 2016, playing with Coldplay at halftime.
“Gustavo can give you a Mahler from memory at Disney Hall anytime,” said Emmanuel Ceysson, the Philharmonic’s principal harp. “And the next day, he is giving you Carlos Vives at the Hollywood Bowl with the same involvement and joy. And it doesn’t feel wrong or disingenuous in any way, doing the light stuff. I admire that so much.”
U.S. stocks were set to open higher on Thursday, as investors sought bargains in beaten-down technology stocks and kept a close watch on developments around the Middle East conflict and its impact on economies and businesses.
Chipmakers bounced back after Wednesday’s selloff sent major Wall Street indexes down more than 1% and technology stocks into correction territory, a 10% drop from their record close.

Thousands of protesters descended on Mexico City on Thursday as the country’s capital planned to celebrate the World Cup opening ceremony, initially vowing to block off the stadium where the first match would kick off unless the Mexican government agreed to their various demands.
But an hour before the first match, it appeared the demonstrations were largely peaceful and the government’s security measures had prevented the protesters from interfering with ticket holders entering the stadium.
Organizers said at least 18,000 protesters representing multiple unions and other groups — teachers, families of the victims of violence, judges and others — showed up in the country’s capital on the first day of the World Cup with broad demands, including pay raises for teachers and more government help to find people who have been kidnapped or gone missing as a result of violence by drug cartels.
Mexican authorities deployed hundreds of riot police officers across the city to hold back the protesters and ensure the games ran smoothly. But observers said they worried about the prospect of violence at a crucial moment for the country. Some 5.5 million people are expected to visit Mexico during the World Cup, the most broadly watched sporting event globally, drawing hundreds of millions of viewers.
A small group of roughly 100 protesters demonstrated outside the stadium during the game. They clashed with riot police officers, while chanting anti-government slogans and “FIFA out!”
Police officers remained mostly calm as the protesters tore down metal barricades and threw sticks and rocks at them. Eventually, the police shot what appeared to be tear gas canisters toward the crowd, forcing them to retreat away from the stadium and pushing them to the nearby avenue.
For many Mexicans, the World Cup is a chance to show the world that Mexico is a thriving, cosmopolitan country. But for the protesters, it is a chance to show how far the country still has to go to provide security and equality for its citizens.

On Thursday, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico insisted the games would go on, that protesters had the right to demonstrate but were obliged to let spectators reach the stadium and that security forces would ensure they could.
“The World Cup opening ceremony is going to go very well, without any problems. The entire Mexico City and government teams are working to guarantee it,” Sheinbaum said at her daily news conference. “We have to make sure that those who came to watch the game can get in. We let them protest to a certain extent.”
A history of brutal repression against similar mass protests hangs over the games. Days before Mexico City hosted the 1968 Olympic opening ceremony, soldiers opened fire on a group of student protesters at the Tlatelolco housing development, killing dozens.
Last week, Sheinbaum referred to the tragedy as she accused protesters of trying to bait the government into violence.
“We won’t fall for the provocation,” she said.
The southern neighborhoods of Mexico City awoke Thursday to blocked streets and the chants of a huge crowd of teachers marching toward the stadium where the World Cup’s opening game would take place. They were met by columns of riot police officers.
“The government has prioritized the
World Cup over its own citizens,” said Lorena Islas, 46, an elementary schoolteacher, part of a union that is demanding pay raises and better pensions.
She complained that she and her colleagues were underpaid, yet the government was spending millions of dollars to give the capital a face-lift before the games.
“After 30 years of service, they’re taking away our pension, even though we’ve dedicated a large part of our lives to serving society,” Islas said.
The president has dismissed the protesters as nothing more than tools of her political opposition who are bent on making her government look bad during the games. On Monday, authorities seized 59 explosive devices from a bus carrying protesters to Mexico City, according to a government statement.
The bus was part of a caravan that was carrying parents of the 43 college students who went missing in 2014 after a confrontation with the police. The tragedy involving students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ College is one of the country’s most enduring. Others who attend the college were also part of the caravan.
Isidoro Vicario Aguilar, a lawyer representing the parents, denied the group had been carrying explosives and said it was dedicated to peaceful demonstrations.
In the heart of Mexico’s capital, plans to host World Cup festivities and screen the opening ceremony to tens of thousands of spectators proceeded, even though the powerful teachers union had shut down much of the area. About 3,000 teachers erected a tent city around the Zócalo, a giant plaza outside the presidential palace in the center of the capital’s normally bustling downtown district.
By 11:30 a.m. local time — an hour and a half before the game started — officials began turning away those waiting to get in, saying the Zócalo’s 80,000-person capacity was full.
Beyond the demonstrations, critics have said the government has not moved quickly enough to prepare for the games and has missed a vital opportunity to rally Mexicans around their flag and stoke national unity. The capital’s airport was still undergoing renovations, while government workers raced to plant flowers across the city and finish painting pedestrian walkways.
The president’s governing party is part of a broader left-wing populist movement that has typically criticized events like the World Cup as catering to the elite, even though all socioeconomic classes enjoy it. Earlier, Sheinbaum announced that she would not attend the games and gave her ticket to a young Indigenous woman who could not afford one.
But the protests are also intended to shine a light on Mexico’s most unfortunate, who say they have been neglected by their government despite promises to help them.
The families of the missing hope to remind the world that more than 130,000 people have disappeared in Mexico, most in the past two decades because of drug cartel violence. They say the government has not lived up to its promises, either in investigating cases or protecting families that are targeted by cartels for drawing attention to their loved ones’ plight.
“I do it for my daughter and the 6,000 missing people in the city and more than 130,000 missing people across the country,” said Vanessa Gámez, who protested this week on the steps of the Angel of Independence, one of Mexico City’s most famous monuments, holding a photo of her daughter, who disappeared nearly a year ago.

On June 10, 1926, Antoni Gaudí, the architectural visionary who designed Barcelona’s spectacular and still unfinished Sagrada Familia basilica, died after being struck by a tram. A century later, one of the architects trying to complete its construction is terrified of being run over by the city’s bicycle delivery riders.
“They’re scarier,” said Mauricio Cortés, an architect who worked on the basilica’s newly finished central tower, which Pope Leo XIV blessed in Barcelona on Wednesday.
Leo, the third pope to visit the church, inaugurated the tower and from a white throne outside the church took in a spectacular light and fireworks display that elicited oohs and ahs from the crowd of dignitaries and clerics, themselves holding electric torches, back in the packed basilica. He also honored Gaudí, an observant Roman Catholic once called “God’s architect,” whose own visage appeared — drawn by choreographed fireworks — next to the tower and illuminated cross in the night sky.
The pope’s presence temporarily turned the building and the packed nearby neighborhoods into the axis around which the Catholic world turned. Leo, during Mass at the basilica Wednesday evening, portrayed the church’s slow construction as a metaphor for life.
“This church is a single building made of many stones,” he said. “A house that grows steadily over the years following a single plan.”

of Barcelona. Residents complain of a city congested — not only with too many delivery riders but also with too many tourists taking up too many apartments, with too little room to house the people who grew up here.
The Sagrada Familia is at the heart of those concerns, attracting the tourists who drive up prices as well as threatening the displacement of nearby residents whose homes may be destroyed to enable the basilica’s construction. That puts the church at the intersection of national partisan politics, questions of regional identity, and local anxieties about overtourism, housing shortages and forced displacement that run even deeper than concerns about
colliding with delivery bikes.
“The situation around here is horrific,” said Salvador Barroso, a representative of the Association of Those Affected by the Sagrada Familia, who lives in a building across from the church that could be demolished to make room for the building’s possible expansion. He said many of his neighbors had planned to hang black ribbons out of their windows during the pope’s visit Wednesday to protest the “injustice” of displacement in a city with skyrocketing rents and diminishing housing inventory.
“I don’t see how a good Christian could accept it,” Barroso said.
The Sagrada Familia foundation, which owns and operates the church and reaps its ticket sales, argues that Gaudí planned a walkway to connect the church’s still unfinished “Glory Facade,” which will be its main entrance, to the street several yards below. It is possible that entire city blocks will need to be cleared for the project, forcing the displacement of hundreds of families.
Esteve Camps, leader of the foundation’s construction board, has said that the church will “not back down on this plan,” and he has also noted, “We are following Gaudí’s plan to the letter.”
But residents say that there is no evidence that Gaudí, whose original models and drawings were destroyed by anarchists during the Spanish Civil War, planned for the
staircase. They point to a Spanish government statement saying as much when the buildings went up in the 1970s.
Barcelona’s City Council will ultimately decide if the expansion goes ahead or not, and the city has said that the foundation will have to shoulder the costs of any eventual relocations. Local media reported that the city government and the neighborhood association met this month to discuss the possible displacement.
More generally, city officials giddily talk about the Sagrada Familia as a global destination that they envision as a Taj Mahal of Europe.
Yet to Barroso and his neighbors, the church’s more than 5 million visitors — coupled with the buskers and tchotchke shops they attract — have already ruined the neighborhood.
On the eve of Leo’s visit, the building opposite the facade displayed a poster showing buildings being stomped on by a boot in the shape of the Sagrada Familia. One woman who bought her apartment there in 1980 — and raised her children in the building — said that she remembered when there were only a handful of workers at the church and she could hear a single hammer on the stone. But since the Olympics held in Barcelona in 1992 accelerated the city’s resurgence, she said, the Sagrada Familia had become an increasingly noisy neighbor.
Others worried it had become an aggressive one, too.
“They can kick us out because of the Sagrada Familia issues,” said Pedro Deane, 39, a chef from Argentina who sublet in the threatened building. He said that a clause of his lease stipulated that he could be evicted with four months’ notice because of the church’s construction. But he took it in stride: “The church has been here longer than the building. Sometimes it’s easier to just go with the flow.”
Another resident, Daria Lapina, a 32-yearold English teacher from Moscow, said that she felt bad for the families who might be moved out. “They have a housing crisis here, and you are going to relocate hundreds of families?” she said. “How are you going to do that?”
There’s unlikely to be any respite from the construction anytime soon. According to Cortés, the architect, the towers over the facade could still take another decade to finish. Cortés has been working on the project for 20 years, he noted, compared with Gaudí’s 40. “Halfway there,” he said.

Inflation accelerated for a third straight month in May amid a stalemate in negotiations to end a war with Iran that has pushed up energy prices, adding to the burden on already strained consumers.
The consumer price index rose 4.2% in May from a year earlier, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported earlier this week, a sharp rise from the 2.4% annual increase before the conflict started in February and the fastest pace since April 2023. Over the course of the month, overall prices jumped 0.5%.
The increase has been driven almost entirely by energy prices, which were up 23.5% from a year earlier. Americans have felt that effect most acutely while filling up their vehicles: A gallon of gasoline costs $4.24 on average, according to AAA, up more than a dollar from a year ago.
Faster price gains have wiped out the pay increases Americans have received over the past year, on average. Adjusted for inflation, hourly earnings have fallen 0.7% over the past year and are exactly where they were when President Donald Trump returned to office. Tax refunds that came in the spring have been spent, and reductions to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are now cutting into food budgets.
“It’s quite a negative situation,” said Stephen Brown, chief North America economist for Capital Economics. “Low-income consumers don’t have a lot of room to maneuver at this point.”
That dynamic was visible across earnings reports at large retailers in recent weeks. Dollar General told investors that its customers had been pulling back on food purchases and looking to shop closer to home because of high gas prices. Even people making more than $100,000 a year were still coming in for cheaper essentials, however.
The inflation report contained some reassuring news for the Federal Reserve, which meets next week to decide whether to change interest rates. Monetary policymakers are most interested in the “core” rate, which strips out volatile food and energy prices and is thought to be a better measure of underlying inflation. That index rose 2.9% on a yearover-year basis and 0.2% for the month, a slower pace than April’s monthly rate.
Price increases for durable goods were also fairly tame, an indication that the tariffs Trump imposed last year have largely worked
their way into prices. Household furnishings have been falling for the past few months and are up only 2.4% over the year. Recreational goods edged down over the month, and new vehicles have been falling in price and are only 0.2% more expensive than this time last year.
Prices in some categories are still normalizing from pandemic-era booms, such as autos and health insurance, which have dropped 2% and 6.4% over the year, respectively.
The White House seized on some of those price declines as a sign that Trump’s economic agenda was delivering “meaningful results for the American people,” as Kush Desai, an administration spokesperson, said in a statement.
“The numbers were great,” Trump told reporters at a bill signing Wednesday.
But according to a long-running survey from the University of Michigan, the increasing mismatch between earnings and prices has put consumers in a foul mood, which poses a danger for Republicans in November’s midterm elections.
The muted core increase may reassure monetary policymakers that they can avoid raising interest rates for now, even though the labor market appears to be strengthening. But it’s also potentially a sign that companies are doing their best to absorb higher energy costs, aware that shoppers are seeing slower wage increases and are exhausted by high prices.
OpenBrand, a consumer data com-
pany, recorded heavier than usual discounting through Memorial Day weekend, Ralph McLaughlin, its chief economist, said.
“There isn’t major evidence that spiking energy prices are really proliferating yet into the rest of the economy,” McLaughlin said. “It’s showing that at least manufacturers and retailers are perhaps acknowledging that consumers are very price sensitive.”
Energy bills have been spilling into some categories where they make up a large chunk of the ultimate price tag, including airline fares, which rose 2.7% in May and 26.7% from a year earlier. The International Air Transport Association said Sunday that higher jet fuel prices would cost the industry $100 billion this year.
Hotel rates also increased 0.5% last month, in a possible indication of effects from the World Cup, although the hospitality industry has been disappointed by demand for rooms. Admission to sporting events, a volatile category, rose 2.8% in May. That kind of discretionary and luxury spending has been driven by high-income consumers, whose stock portfolios have fattened this year.
But grocery prices rose only 0.1% over the month, down from 0.7% in April, because of falling prices for meat and dairy after a large surge in beef prices. Producers, distributors and retailers have tried to keep prices as stable as possible in hopes that the energy price surge will pass, said Andy Harig, a vice president at FMI, a food industry trade association.
“You want to have some certainty about where we’re headed before you see where the prices go at the consumer level, because you don’t want to have periods where you’re raising and you’re lowering,” Harig said. “So I think that slowed the price transmission up to this point.”
America’s artificial intelligence boom is also pushing up inflation.
Although electricity in the United States is mostly generated by abundant natural gas and renewable energy sources rather than oil, massive new data centers are adding so much demand for power that prices have risen nearly 6% from last year. Those computing complexes also need the same memory chips that go into nearly all consumer electronics. As a consequence, computer equipment is becoming more expensive, after getting cheaper for decades.

The electric comeback by the New York Knicks in Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday night unleashed a chaotic and optimistic energy in Madison Square Garden and the streets of New York City.
The vibe outside the arena was rowdy, and there was some tension between fans and police officers as the game entered the fourth quarter. But by the time the Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs, there was elation inside and outside the Garden.
Director Spike Lee danced on the court while Taylor Swift waved her Knicks rally towel and Timothée Chalamet appeared to fight back tears. The roar of the crowd drowned out the postgame interviews taking place nearby. Fans began
to file out of the arena as a security guard directed people toward the exits with “Goodnight! See you at the parade.”
As the game ended, revelers poured out of bars around the city to join the celebration.
Along Avenue A in the East Village, traffic was partially stopped at East 13th Street as people chanted “Knicks in five!” and “Go New York, Go New York, Go!” Passing garbage trucks and buses blared their horns, cheered on by fans. In midtown Manhattan, fans clambered on top of box trucks and shimmied up light poles.
When the final buzzer sounded, the explosion of energy from a crowd gathered in Park Slope could be heard underground in the Union Street subway station. Some set off fireworks.
The thrilling comeback puts the Knicks one win from their first NBA title since 1973.
Tensions around Game 4 had been high in part because Mayor Zohran Mamdani and James L. Dolan, the owner of the Knicks, were arguing Wednesday over who was to blame for the cancellation of a smaller viewing party outside the Garden. Dolan said he had rejected the city’s offer to screen the game to roughly 1,000 ticketed fans.
In response, Mamdani said on social media that Dolan’s decision was “breaking hearts across our city.”
He later said that dozens of information kiosks across the city were streaming the game. “When James Dolan cancels the watch party outside MSG, we bring the watch party to you,” Mamdani wrote on social media.

The Atléticos of San Germán stormed back from a 20-point deficit in the third quarter and went on to defeat the Gigantes of Carolina-Canóvanas 93-89 in a Superior National
Basketball league game at Carlos Miguel Mangual Coliseum in Canóvanas on Wednesday night.

Harrell struck again with a basket in the paint, while Jorge Matos capped the run with a layup, making it 87-80 with 2:35 remaining.
Harrell led the Atléticos with 25 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Marlon Hargis with 14 points. Daniels and Christian Pizarro contributed 12 points each.
Jaylen Nowell added 19 points for the Gigantes, and Scottie James scored 14.

Trailing 48-42 at the half, the Criollos made adjustments in the third quarter, turning things around with contributions from the bench and solid team execution.
Caguas extended its lead in the second half with some timely long-range shooting from Louis King combined with Jeff Early Jr.’s production in the paint.
Early Jr. led the Criollos with 21 points, while King contributed 18 points and Travis Trice dished out 11 assists. Alexander Kappos grabbed 12 rebounds for Caguas, followed by Moses Brown with 11.
Brandon Knight and Ysmael Romero each scored 21 points, and Torrey Craig added 17 for Guaynabo.

Janelle Martínez, a utility player for the Leonas of Ponce, has emerged as the top offensive force in the Women’s Premier Softball League (LPSF by its initials in Spanish) following the completion of the first two weeks of the season.
The 22-year-old player from Ponce tops the batting list with an impressive .600 average (nine hits in 15 official at-bats).
A key component of the Leonas’ offense, Martínez has six singles and three doubles, while also driving in five runs, scoring six, and stealing two bases.
In the race for the batting title, Martínez is followed by teammate Yahelis Muñoz, who is batting .556. Other batting leaders include Chloe Malau’ulu (Prodigiosas of Sabana Grande) at .542, Hayley Busby (Bravas of Cidra) at .533, Janiliz Rivera (Leonas) at .529, Nia Carter (Valencianas of Juncos) at .500 and Valeria Rosario (Caribeñas of Salinas) at .476.
Malau’ulu and Carter share the lead in hits with 13 each. Malau’ulu also leads in doubles with four, tied with Muñoz.
