Energy czar rejects claims of a hidden rate hike GOOD MORNING

Josué Colón Ortiz, the island’s energy czar, is rejecting claims that a decision this week by the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) amounts to a hidden electricity rate increase, insisting instead that the measure represents a redistribution of costs intended to ensure fairness across the system.

Responding to questions from the press about whether the PREB’s Resolution and Order was effectively a rate hike, the energy czar said he supported the decision and denied that consumers are paying more per kilowatt-hour.

“No, look, I don’t think that’s the case,” Colón Ortiz said. “I agree with what the Energy Bureau did in its Resolution and Order.”

He noted that the government has an obligation to allocate the electrical system’s fixed costs among all customers who are connected to and benefit from the grid, regardless of how much energy they consume or whether they generate power through renewable systems such as rooftop solar.

“I believe that part of the government’s obligations is to distribute the system’s fixed costs among all customers connected to and benefiting from the system, which must be maintained and improved,” he said. “All of that is part of being connected to an electrical grid.”

The energy czar said the PREB’s decision corrected what he characterized as an inequitable distribution of costs under the previous rate structure. He emphasized that the price per kilowatt-hour did not increase, but that fixed charges were adjusted to better reflect the cost of maintaining a multi-billion-dollar electrical infrastructure.

“What happened was a redistribution of energy costs among all subscribers, whether they are connected via solar panels -- net metering -- or other renewable systems,” Colón Ortiz said. “If this redistribution was not previously equitable, the government addressed that. We believe that’s correct.”

He added that some customers had been paying a fixed charge of only four dollars despite being connected to and relying on an extensive and costly power system.

“The reality is that the price per kilowatt-hour remained the same as before,” he said.

The decision, however, has drawn sharp criticism from the Puerto Rico Solar Energy and Storage Association (SESA), which on Thursday formally rejected the modification to the rate structure. The organization argued that increasing fixed charges while lowering consumption-based charges is regressive, contradicts Puerto Rico’s public energy policy, and harms consumers -- particularly those with lower incomes.

“SESA opposes any increase in the base charge,” said Javier Rúa Jovet, the organization’s public policy director. “This type of rate change raises serious legal and public policy concerns, particularly due to its disproportionate impact on lower-income customers.”

SESA warned that higher fixed charges impact customers regardless of how much electricity they consume, placing a heavier financial burden on households that use less power and limiting consumers’ ability to manage their bills through conservation or

energy efficiency.

The association also argued that Puerto Rico’s legal framework is designed to protect consumers from regressive rate changes, asserting that flat fixed fees inherently benefit higher-consumption customers while penalizing those who consume the least.

“This is, by definition, a regressive policy,” Rúa Jovet said. “It penalizes those who consume the least and limits households’ ability to control their electricity bill through efficiency and conservation measures.”

The PREB’s decision comes amid ongoing debate over how to fairly allocate the costs of maintaining Puerto Rico’s aging electrical grid while encouraging the adoption of renewable energy and protecting vulnerable consumers. At the center of the disagreement is whether fixed charges should play a larger role in electricity bills, particularly as more customers adopt solar and other distributed energy systems.

On Wednesday, the PREB issued a resolution that redistributes how electrical system costs are recovered. While a general rate increase was denied, the new structure includes a pension charge in the base rate, which will impact some customers. The pension fee was separate.

The redistribution specifically impacts “prosumers” (customers with solar panels under net metering), who may see changes in how they are billed for their connection to the grid.

The PREB indicated that a typical residential customer consuming 800 kilowatt-hours should see a reduction in the base component of their bill despite the changes. Broader permanent electricity price increases originally proposed have reportedly been postponed until July of this year.

Variable to unstable weather conditions will persist through Friday, bringing periods of showers and some thunderstorms -- particularly in the afternoon -- along with a localized risk of flooding, according to weather forecasters.

A moderate risk of dangerous marine currents remained in effect Thursday for several beaches, especially those along the northern and eastern coasts, with continuing caution advised.

Conditions were expected to improve

by Saturday, as drier air moves in and the weather becomes more stable, returning to a more typical pattern with less rainfall.

On Friday, localized heavy rains were expected to continue from Thursday, while a trough maintains unstable conditions that favor the development of showers and some thunderstorms. Sufficient moisture will be present to generate showers, primarily during the afternoon. The morning hours will be quieter, but rain activity will increase in the interior and western regions of Puerto Rico during the afternoon. A risk of flooding exists in these areas should

heavy rain occur.

Conditions were set to improve by Saturday, which is expected to be the driest and most stable day of this period.

Atmospheric moisture levels will drop from elevated levels to levels more typical for this time of year. Additionally, at upper levels, the trough will shift further to the east, creating a more stable and slightly warmer atmospheric environment.

Consequently, few showers are expected in the morning on Saturday, followed by some isolated showers in the afternoon -- mainly across western Puerto Rico.

OPAL finds no fiscal impact from proposed Yule bonus tax exemption, PDP lawmaker says

Popular Democratic Party at-large Rep. Swanny Enit Vargas Laureano announced that the Office of Legislative Budget and Analysis (OPAL by its acronym in Spanish) has determined that exempting Christmas bonuses for public and private-sector employees from income tax withholdings would not negatively impact government revenues.

Vargas Laureano said OPAL completed a technical and fiscal evaluation of her proposed legislation, which seeks to authorize the payment of Christmas bonuses without withholding at the source. The evaluation concluded that the measures would not reduce government collections, allowing the bills to move forward in the legislative process without fiscal restrictions.

In an official communication issued by OPAL, the agency stated that the proposals under review do not represent a negative budgetary impact for the central government. As a result, the bills may continue through the legislative process without triggering statutory fiscal limitations.

“Having OPAL’s analysis is an essential step to ensure that every measure advances with the transparency and rigor required

in public administration,” Vargas Laureano said. “The evaluation confirms that these proposals can be implemented without a negative fiscal impact, allowing the discussion to focus on their merits and the benefits they represent for the working class.”

Vargas Laureano noted that the next step lies with the House Treasury Committee, which is chaired by Rep. Eddie Charbonier Chinea, who will determine whether the proposal is brought forward for a vote.

She emphasized that the measures have broad support among workers and labor organizations across the island. She said she has held conversations with numerous labor unions and employee groups, “and all have voiced support for approving these measures.”

“These bills would put Puerto Rican workers in a better position to manage the expenses associated with the Christmas season,” Vargas Laureano added.

The lawmaker also highlighted the broader economic implications of the proposals, noting that increased disposable income during the holiday season could have a positive effect on the island’s commercial sector.

“Beyond providing direct relief to workers, these measures

strengthen our economy during one of the most critical seasons for the retail and service industries,” she said.

Pilot program proposed to integrate pre-kinder into public education system

As part of Early Childhood Week, Sen. Jeison Rosa Ramos filed a measure on Thursday proposing the creation of a pilot program to integrate pre-kindergarten into the public education system in Puerto Rico as part of a strategy to strengthen early childhood education.

Senate Bill 1178 establishes a model of gradual implementation in public schools, with the aim of ensuring a structured transition to the elementary level and promoting the comprehen-

sive development of children from an early age.

“Access to quality education is crucial for the academic and social development of our children,” the District IV (Mayagüez-Aguadilla) senator said. “With this bill, we seek to lay the foundations for a more robust, equitable, and well-planned public policy from the earliest years of life.”

The bill stipulates that the Department of Education will design and implement the pilot program, including curriculum, school selection criteria, staff training and ongoing evaluation mechanisms. It also promotes coordination with

existing programs such as Head Start and other early childhood initiatives.

“This is not an isolated initiative, but an effort to integrate and strengthen existing resources, avoiding duplication and ensuring that every child has access to educational opportunities from a critical stage of their development,” Rosa Ramos added.

The measure also includes the periodic evaluation of the program and the eventual expansion of the model to more schools, subject to the results obtained and the availability of resources.

Bipartisan House bill would exclude taxes from electronic payment fees

In an effort to ease costs for consumers, Speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez announced on Thursday the filing of House Bill 1216, which would prohibit electronic payment processing fees from being calculated on the portion of a transaction corresponding to federal, state or municipal taxes within Puerto Rico’s territorial jurisdiction.

The bill is coauthored by Popular Democratic Party House Minority Leader Rep. Héctor Ferrer Santiago.

Interchange fees are commissions charged to merchants by financial institutions, issuing banks, acquiring banks, card networks, and payment processors for the authorization, clearing and settlement of electronic transactions. The fees, which typically range between 1% and 3% of the total transaction value -- and can be higher for rewards cards -- are currently calculated on the full amount charged to the consumer.

tax (IVU by its initials in Spanish) and other applicable federal, state or municipal taxes.

“This means that merchants pay a percentage-based fee on funds that do not constitute their own income, but rather amounts they are legally required to collect and remit to the government,” Méndez said. “From both a legal and economic perspective, the merchant acts as a collection agent for the state when it comes to the IVU. They receive no profit or economic benefit from that portion. However, under the current model, interchange fees are also applied to that tax component, using a calculation base that includes amounts that are not merchant income.”

provided that the merchant electronically transmits that information through available technological mechanisms,” he added.

Puerto Rico would not be acting alone. Several U.S. jurisdictions have begun reassessing the interchange fee calculation model. In 2024, Illinois approved the Interchange Fee Prohibition Act, becoming the first jurisdiction to ban the charging of interchange fees on the tax portion of electronic transactions.

Under current practice, this calculation includes not only the actual value of the goods or services purchased, but also the portion corresponding to the sales and use

Méndez noted that the measure sets clear limits on the calculation base for the fees with respect to tax components. “Specifically, it establishes as a matter of public policy in Puerto Rico that electronic payment processing fees may not be calculated on the portion corresponding to federal, state, or municipal taxes in transactions carried out within Puerto Rico’s territorial jurisdiction,

Filed on April 14, the legislation further states that “no financial institution, payment processor, credit or debit card network, acquiring bank, issuing bank, merchant service provider, or any other entity that facilitates, authorizes, processes, or settles credit and/or debit card transactions may receive or charge a merchant any additional fee -- whether in the form of a charge, commission, surcharge, interchange fee, or any other fee imposed directly or indirectly on the consumer or merchant per electronic transaction (swipe fee) -- on any amount corresponding to federal, state, or municipal taxes.”

Crowley marks one year of LNG carrier in service to island

Crowley has marked the first anniversary of operations of American Energy, the first U.S.-flagged liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier dedicated exclusively to Puerto Rico, underscoring the company’s role in strengthening the island’s energy resilience and long-term supply reliability.

The milestone, Crowley noted, highlights a year of uninterrupted LNG deliveries supporting electricity generation for homes, businesses and critical infrastructure across Puerto Rico. The vessel docks at the EcoEléctrica power generation facility in Peñuelas, where it delivers U.S.-sourced LNG under a multiyear partnership with global energy company Naturgy.

“I want to congratulate Crowley on achieving this milestone, marking the first anniversary of LNG deliveries to Puerto Rico by the vessel American Energy, a U.S.-flagged service dedicated to supplying our power needs,” Gov. Jenniffer González Colón said. “Crowley’s efforts help to strengthen our energy sector’s resiliency and support jobs and investment through a partnership that ensures safe, affordable electricity for our people. We will always support initiatives that advance Puerto Rico’s energy security and economic growth.”

Since its first delivery in March 2025, American Energy has transported more than 2 million cubic meters -- some 549 million gallons -- of LNG to the island. That volume

is sufficient to power an estimated 1.2 million homes in Puerto Rico for a year, while also reducing carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 30% compared with diesel fuel.

“Reaching one year of uninterrupted service with American Energy represents more than a performance milestone; it represents dependable access to energy for Puerto Rico,” said Jackie González, vice president of advanced energy for Crowley. “Over the past year, this vessel has provided consistent, secure LNG transportation that families, businesses and communities rely on every day. That reliability supports economic activity, essential services and greater energy confidence across the island.”

Beyond energy supply, the vessel has played a meaningful role in strengthening the U.S. maritime workforce. Over the past year, American Energy has employed 90 U.S. mariners, including 16 cadets and apprentices. Nearly 20% of those mariners are from Puerto Rico, helping expand maritime career opportunities and support the island’s skilled labor force.

The LNG carrier builds on Crowley’s more than 70-year presence in Puerto Rico and its longstanding support of the island’s energy and logistics infrastructure. Through its partnership with Naturgy, American Energy delivers LNG to the EcoEléctrica facility, one of Puerto Rico’s primary power generation plants, ensuring a steady fuel supply that supports residential, commercial and industrial electricity demand.

Crowley’s energy operations in Puerto Rico extend be-

yond LNG shipping. The company operates a full-service cargo terminal in San Juan that supports container ships and roll-on/roll-off barge operations, including two LNG-fueled vessels. Crowley also provides integrated logistics services across the island.

In Peñuelas, Crowley supplies some 94 million gallons of LNG annually to industrial customers from its LNG loading terminal and provides transportation through ISO tank containers. Together, the operations contribute to a more diversified and resilient energy system for Puerto Rico as it continues its transition toward cleaner, more reliable power sources.

Justice Sotomayor apologizes for highly personal criticism of Justice Kavanaugh

Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued a rare public apology earlier this week for criticizing a Supreme Court colleague, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, in surprisingly personal terms during a public appearance last week.

“I made remarks that were inappropriate,” Sotomayor said in a statement in response to questions from The New York Times and other media outlets. “I regret my hurtful comments. I have apologized to my colleague.”

The highly unusual public mea culpa from a justice comes as the Supreme Court is entering the final stretch of a momentous term in which the justices are resolving a series of major cases testing President Donald Trump’s policy initiatives.

The controversy began at the University of Kansas Law School last Tuesday when the justice was asked about the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration — and specifically her blistering dissent to a temporary ruling the court issued in September permitting immigration-related stops in the Los Angeles area. Challengers of the policy had told the justices the stops involved “blatant racial profiling.”

The question provoked a strong response from Sotomayor, the court’s first Latina member. She suggested that a concurrence written by Kavanaugh in that case showed he was out of touch with the experiences of working-class people. He had emphasized that the majority was permitting “brief investigative stops.”

“There are some people who can’t understand our experiences, even when you tell them,” she said during the conversation with two Kansas alumnae, Judge Mary Murguia of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and her twin sister, Janet Murguia, the head of a Latino civil rights organization.

“I had a colleague in that case who wrote, you know, these are only temporary stops,” the justice said, noting that even a brief interaction with law enforcement can have major consequences for a person’s job security and children.

“This is from a man whose parents were professionals and probably doesn’t really know any person who works by the hour or the piece like I do,” she added.

Sotomayor did not mention Kavanaugh by name, but he was the only member of the majority who wrote to provide an explanation for the ruling on immigration stops.

He wrote that “apparent ethnicity alone cannot furnish reasonable suspicion,” but “it can be a ‘relevant factor’ when considered along with other salient factors.” Kavanaugh subsequently clarified his opinion in a separate case, writing that “officers must not make interior immigration stops or arrests based on race or ethnicity.”

Sotomayor has often referred to her own life experiences and how those shaped her perspective, but the personal criticism of a colleague was unusual. It prompted an editorial from The Wall Street Journal titled “Justice Sonia Sotomayor Profiles Brett Kavanaugh.”

The two justices are graduates of Yale Law School, but their childhoods could not have been more different. Sotomayor grew up in public housing in the Bronx borough of New York City. Her father, who was a welder, died when she was 9, leaving her mother, a nurse, to raise her and her brother.

Kavanaugh grew up in Bethesda, a Maryland suburb of Washington, where his father was a trade association executive and his mother a prosecutor who later became a judge. But during his confirmation hearings in 2018, the justice spoke about his summer jobs in construction and cutting lawns, and the impact of his experience as a longtime volunteer serving meals to the homeless through Catholic Charities.

Kavanaugh did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday about his colleague’s apology.

At a separate appearance at the University of Alabama Law School last week, Sotomayor was asked about political divisions and how she builds bridges across ideological lines.

“I dissent so much, I’m not very successful,” replied the justice, who is the senior member of the court’s three-justice liberal wing.

In general, she said she did not define her colleagues by “their worst ideas” and instead looked for the best in them as human beings.

“With virtually all of them I certainly have a civil relationship,” Sotomayor said, “and with many of them, I dare say that I have a friendship.”

Yale report finds colleges deserve blame for higher education’s problems

U.S. colleges and universities bear significant responsibility for plunging public trust in higher education, a Yale University committee suggested in a report released earlier this week.

High costs, murky admissions practices, uneven academic standards and fears about free speech on campuses, the committee said, are among the reasons for widening discontent over higher education’s worthiness.

The findings reflect misgivings that Americans have described across years of polling and interviews. But the report, from a 10-professor panel at one of the nation’s most renowned universities, amounts to a damning depiction of academia’s role in

cultivating the political and cultural forces that are reshaping higher education’s place in American life.

“Trust is earned by doing what you say you’re going to do — and, ideally, doing it well,” the committee wrote, describing “widespread uncertainty about the fundamental purpose and mission of higher education.”

Universities have faced pressure to help address societal problems, the committee noted, saying they were “expected to be all things to all people: selective but inclusive, affordable but luxurious, meritocratic but equitable.”

But, the professors added, “without a clear mission and purpose, it becomes difficult to judge whether colleges and universities are living up to their fundamental commitments.”

Most U.S. schools are far removed from places such as Yale, where the estimated annual cost of attendance for undergraduates exceeds $90,000 before financial aid. Administrators at many institutions, most of which cost far less and admit far more students, complain that their schools are unfairly tied to selective universities.

But those broad perceptions are driving debates about academic offerings, taxpayer support for universities, and President Donald Trump’s attacks on a higher education system that predates the nation itself.

Friction around colleges is not new. The committee, though, pointed to a congruence of contemporary practices to help explain why academia’s standing has declined so far, so fast. Gallup reported last September that 35% of Americans regarded a college education as “very important” — half the number who thought that in 2013.

Yale commissioned its report last April, as the Trump administration pelted elite universities with criticism and funding cuts. Yale avoided the worst of the administration’s wrath, but its president, Maurie McInnis, said academic leaders needed to better understand public sentiments.

In its report, the Yale panel extolled the aims of higher education, but was unsparing in suggesting how schools, including Yale, had harmed public views of it.

For example, Yale and many other schools now rely on a model that regularly dilutes high tuition prices with generous aid packages. Although many students pay nowhere near sticker prices, the committee wrote that the approach had exacted “a disastrous impact on public trust.”

“By its nature, the system is complicated, unpredictable, secretive and highly variable,” the report said. “These factors tend to reduce trust rather than increase it.”

(Some efforts are clearer: Yale announced in January that it would not charge tuition for undergraduates from families making less than $200,000 annually.)

Undergraduate admissions procedures, wellintentioned as they might be, are often opaque, the committee added, devoid of decipherable standards

for matters as fundamental as academic achievement. Yale is among the schools with no minimum test score requirement.

“When selective admissions seem so inexplicable — or, worse, tilted in ways that benefit the already advantaged — it should come as no surprise that many Americans do not trust the process,” the committee wrote.

And the group warned about how other issues, such as grade inflation and increases in university staff, were undermining academia’s stature.

“Our goal in the report was to take the long view and to acknowledge that public skepticism and distrust is something that’s built over time and will take some time to reverse,” Beverly Gage, a historian who was the committee’s co-chair, said in an interview. “But we were very committed to the idea of self-scrutiny, and we’re very committed to the idea that, moving forward, the strategy needs to be not just one of changed communications but one of real, substantive action and self-critique.”

The committee offered dozens of recommendations, including expanding financial aid, reducing admissions preferences, zealously protecting free speech and adjusting grading policies. People in academia, the committee said, “must be willing to admit where we have been wrong and where we might improve, even as we defend what is essential about higher education and its academic mission.”

The other co-chair, sociologist Julia Adams, said committee members hoped their recommendations would upend perceptions. But she added that “change is necessary for its own sake.”

In a campus email Wednesday, McInnis said people at Yale had been “certainly more than mere bystanders” as public confidence collapsed.

“We must acknowledge how we have fallen short,” wrote McInnis, who was not on the committee.

McInnis did not immediately implement all of the panel’s recommendations, though she appeared open to many of them. In an interview, she said that there was an appetite for public debate about higher education that she hoped the report would deepen.

“Really, everywhere I go in my engagements with the public more broadly,” she said, “it is a topic that people wish to be discussing.”

This is not a man in control of himself

To have spent any amount of time observing President Donald Trump over the last month is to conclude that he is in far over his head.

The president is struggling with the consequences of his actions, raging in protest of the fact that for all its firepower, the United States cannot bomb Iran into submission. When Trump launched his “short-term excursion,” he assumed that it would be — in the words of a Pentagon official in the last Republican administration to launch a Middle East war — a “cakewalk.”

That, as Trump’s own intelligence agencies told him, was a mistake. Now, he is stuck. And he lacks the skill and patience to find a way out of his self-inflicted catastrophe. Unable to will a better outcome into existence — there are limits to the power of positive thinking — and frustrated by his own impotence, his response, familiar to anyone who must manage the emotions of a young child, is to throw a tantrum.

Over the last few days, Trump has denounced “the Fake News Media” as “CRAZY, or just plain CORRUPT!” for its reporting on the war. He attacked Pope Leo XIV in a bizarre rant calling him “WEAK on Crime” and “terrible for Foreign Policy.” And he posted an artificial intelligence image of himself as Jesus, surrounded by devotees, healing an unnamed man. This is not a man in control of himself or a president in control of the situation around him.

I’ve written before about the irony of a strongman president so uninterested in governing that he has handed his power over

to a handful of deputies. Trump’s behavior as he faces failure in Iran underscores another such irony.

Months before Trump won his second term, and well before he took office, the Supreme Court handed him the reins of the unitary executive — the promise of an active, energetic administration free of what the court deemed unnecessary constraints. The president has used this power to run wild, trampling over constitutional government. But he has also, at the same time, shown himself to be the weakest and most ineffectual president of recent memory, less a man of commanding authority than, well, a buffoon.

This is not to say that Trump has been an inconsequential president, that he hasn’t presided over the wholesale destruction of large parts of the federal government or that he hasn’t turned the sharp edge of the state against the most vulnerable people in the country.

First under the Department of Government Efficiency and then under the direction of Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget, the administration summarily liquidated several key agencies. Among them: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the United States Institute of Peace, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Trump’s White House has also slashed hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer funding for new medicines and technologies in a crushing blow to scientific research in the United States.

Under the direction of Stephen Miller, a White House deputy chief of staff and the architect of the president’s deportation program, the administration has used its courtsanctioned authority to build a roving secret police of armed immigration agents, used both to terrorize the president’s political enemies and to remove as many immigrants from the country as possible, regardless of legal status.

But these grim facts of Trump’s tenure should not blind us to the way his unilateral action betrays the weakness of his regime. Trump works almost exclusively through executive orders — presidential directives used to shape the priorities of the federal bureaucracy. This allows him to move quickly. But there are also limits to his reach. In areas where Trump cannot compel political actors to obey his demands — where there is no legal basis for his authority — he struggles to do anything of consequence.

Consider his effort to impose a new citizenship requirement for voting, as well as a national voter ID. He has issued two executive orders that purport to change federal elections to suit his demands. But neither has much in the way of legal force. Presidential power does not extend to election administration. There is the SAVE Act — a bill that would write these restrictions into law — but other than writing posts on his social media website, Trump has done little to nothing to push that bill through Congress.

He’s done little to nothing with Congress, period. He’s taken few, if any, steps to work with the supine Republican majority to consolidate his transformation of the executive branch through legislation. Some of this is no doubt strategy, with destruction

A monitor displays President Donald Trump as he delivers a message on the war in Iran in Washington, April 1, 2026. (Jason Hendardy/The New York Times)

as a fait accompli. But most of it reflects his inability to engage the legislative process. The weakness we see abroad is the weakness we see at home and vice versa.

Nothing underscores Trump’s weakness as an executive more than the war with Iran. This is not to downplay the president’s decision to circumvent Congress and start a war without so much as a nod to democratic decision-making. It is the imperial project of a would-be authoritarian. But like many such projects throughout history, it is a showcase for the pathologies and dysfunctions of the regime in question. Initial operational success has given way to what is essentially a stalemate, with Trump screaming at the world, unwilling to do much else.

For as much as Trump is uniquely unsuited for the tremendous power of his office, it is also true that the idea of the unitary executive rests on a fundamental misunderstanding of the American political system. It imagines that government can be managed by a single figure, directing each part of the executive branch as an extension of his person. But the American system rests on consensus and collaboration. It depends on an active relationship among the three branches, each working to steer the affairs of a state and each entitled to its influence.

As weak as Trump is, it’s not clear that any president could unilaterally govern the country with any success. Even our strongest and most aggressive presidents — Franklin Roosevelt comes to mind — worked in conjunction and cooperation with congressional majorities and allies within and outside the federal government. They understood that American governance was a partnership and that collaboration is necessary if one wants a durable and lasting legacy.

This raises what is already the most important question of the Trump years thus far: Will his legacy be durable and lasting? Does it represent a new template for American government going forward? Or is it more like an unfortunate detour into a dark alley?

There is a decent chance that Trump is the beginning of something and not the end. But if we can escape these years intact and respond accordingly, we may find that Trump stands less as an example and more as a cautionary tale of what happens when we embrace unaccountable, unilateral authority.

In the end, it just doesn’t work.

Protoje, one of reggae’s premier ambassadors, doubles down on his roots

Hope Gardens, a lush, pastoral oasis in Jamaica’s capital city, Kingston, was the setting for the third installment of the Lost in Time music festival — a fitting conclusion to February, observed as Reggae Month on the island. The dynamic up-and-comer Lila Iké performed, alongside Jesse Royal and Mortimer, all three 2026 Grammy nominees. To close the event, the much beloved, elusive singer Chronixx took the stage for his first local performance in nearly seven years.

But the two-day festival was largely a showcase for the star who runs it: Protoje. Since emerging as a preeminent figure within Jamaica’s Reggae Revival movement of the previous decade, Protoje, 44, has grown into one of the most powerful global ambassadors of the island’s signature beat.

He’s appeared on both Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert’s late-night shows, booked slots at Coachella and Glastonbury, earned a pair of Grammy nominations and performed two acclaimed NPR Tiny Desk concerts. He also secured a partnership between his independent label, In.Digg.Nation Collective, and a major, RCA, through which he’s released three albums. At a moment when dancehall and Afrobeatsinflected music has been taking off worldwide, Protoje remains dedicated to reviving and reclaiming a particularly traditional Jamaican sound. His seventh studio album, “The Art of Acceptan-

ce,” features collaborations with reggae royalty — Damian and Stephen Marley, two artists who represent “the standard I try to match,” he said. He cited “Welcome to Jamrock” (by Damian) and “Mind Control” (by Stephen) as longtime inspirations.

During a recent interview at a Kingston hotel, Protoje was intently focused and gracious as he credited his collaborators and mentors, a golden yellow, knitted tam crowning his long dreadlocks.

“The Art of Acceptance,” due Friday, reflects a mindset of “accepting the things you can’t change,” he said. “We started recording the album with the lyrics, ‘Rastafari teach I how to forgive, I’ve been learning how to live and let live,’” he added. “So acceptance means finding a way to positively radiate through your surroundings.”

Protoje’s roots in the music run deep. His mother is Lorna Bennett, a former singer turned lawyer who topped the Jamaican charts in 1972 with her reggae cover of Dusty Springfield’s “Breakfast in Bed.” His father, Mike Ollivierre, is a former calypso king of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Protoje was born Oje Ken Ollivierre and raised in St. Elizabeth parish, located in southwestern Jamaica. After attending St. Elizabeth’s prestigious boarding school Munro College, he briefly considered studying law before choosing a musical path. In 2005 he released his first mixtape, the heavily hip-hop influenced “Lyrical Overdose Volume 1,” and his debut album, “The 7 Year Itch,” arrived six years later, featuring his breakthrough single, “Rasta Love” (featuring Ky-Mani Marley). But it was his 2015 album, “Ancient Future,” and its anthemic hit “Who Knows” featuring Chronixx, that catapulted Protoje into Jamaican music’s major league. Produced by Philip James, known as Winta — the sonic architect behind Samory I’s 2023 LP “Strength” and Mortimer’s 2026 album “From Within” — “Ancient Future” was lauded for its fusion of roots reggae, digital dancehall and hip-hop inspirations. The album is regarded as a cornerstone of Jamaica’s Reggae Revival, a cultural and musical movement that surfaced around 2010 and was named by author Gavin “Dutty Bookman” Hutchinson. The Reggae Revival evoked the consciousness, social activism and spiritual values of 1970s Rastafarian roots reggae as interpreted

by a younger generation.

Protoje followed “Ancient Future” with “A Matter of Time” in 2018, also produced by Winta James; they reunited for “The Art of Acceptance,” with Protoje taking on more of a role in the production. Moving away from the hybrid sound characteristic of their previous collaborations, this time they sought an unmistakable reggae identity. “I don’t know if traditional is the right word, but I wanted stronger reggae instrumentation,” Winta said. “Throughout, we were just playing what came naturally, trying to make great tunes like we heard on the school bus growing up in the ’90s by singers like Everton Blender, Luciano and Garnet Silk.”

The album tackles societal critiques, Rastafarian philosophy, personal reflections and romantic longings. “The Locusts,” with an evocative sung-spoken history lesson delivered by Pressure Busspipe, is reminiscent of a trap palette overlaid with crunchy guitars and shimmering keys; the bittersweet recollections shared on “Something I Said,” featuring a soulful refrain by Jesse Royal, are undergirded by a velvety ’70s-

styled R&B groove. Yet “The Art of Acceptance” remains strongly tethered to Jamaica’s musical foundation: exquisitely crafted one-drop rhythms, throbbing bass lines and dub reverbs that aren’t diluted for a globalized market. “Reggae’s sound has always been positive and palatable, Bob Marley’s music was palatable, but my music sounds like me because of my influences and the producer’s influences,” Protoje said. “I am making authentic reggae, elevating my music to global production standards so that someone who may not be a reggae fan would hear it and say, ‘this sounds good.’”

The lushly produced, resounding reggae rhythms on the LP summon the profound impact Jamaica’s late “riddim twins,” Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, have had in shaping Protoje’s evolution. “Sly and Robbie are my greatest influences pertaining to production and sound, the biggest producers Jamaica has ever known,” he said. “You can only hope to achieve a fraction of what they’ve done and carry on their tradition.”

Wall Street bank earnings deliver split picture as volatile markets take center stage

Major U.S. banks delivered a split picture this week, as Middle East-linked market volatility lifted trading in the first quarter but clouded dealmaking prospects.

Bank earnings are tracked beyond Wall Street, as they offer a real-time read on how households and businesses are navigating still-higher borrowing costs, spending pressures and an uncertain economy.

Below are key trends from the first-quarter results at top U.S. banks, which often set the tone for the broader earnings season:

TRADING DESKS WIN BIG

It was an extremely choppy quarter for markets, fueled by a selloff in global technology stocks on AI disruption fears, the Iran war and worries about the private credit sector.

Wall Street traders emerged as the biggest winners from the market turmoil that spread across virtually every asset class, including equities, fixed income and commodities.

WILL DEALMAKING FINALLY HAVE ITS YEAR?

For years, top Wall Street banks have hoped dealmaking would break out of a slump. And in 2026, that started to materialize, with several big-ticket deals, and Elon Musk’s SpaceX preparing for the biggest initial public offering of all time this summer.

However, volatile markets have tempered that optimism, with analysts flagging an uneven path forward for deals, if the war stretches out.

“The banks were understandably reticent to be too bullish in their outlook statements, given the range of possible outcomes to the Middle Eastern conflict and the peace talks,” Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, told Reuters.

SPOTLIGHT ON LENDING AND CREDIT TRENDSInterest income rose across the big four U.S. lenders in the first quarter as loan demand rebounded.

Borrowers were encouraged to take on debt again, but signs of softness in labor markets and limited visibility on the Federal Reserve’s rate path are likely to keep banks cautious.

Credit quality remains broadly stable, with banks flagging only modest changes even as investors watch for signs of stress, especially around the banks’ private credit business. This also supported loan growth across the sector, as rising credit losses typically prompt lenders to tighten.

“Private credit is still just a smaller part of the overall credit spectrum. While there are some major headlines, the banks are in great shape to weather what’s going on,” said Macrae Sykes, portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds, which holds several largecap bank stocks.

HOW RESULTS STACKED UP AGAINST EXPECTATIONS

Profits increased and beat analysts’ estimates at all six major

banks, powered by trading and dealmaking strength.

STOCK PERFORMANCE

An index tracking large-cap bank stocks has lost 1.8% this year through April 14 close, compared to a 2% gain for the broader S&P 500 index, amid worries around private credit and economic uncertainty. Here is a rundown of Reuters’ coverage of big banks’ first-quarter earnings:

Israel agrees to 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon

Israel has agreed to a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday, a development that could remove a major hurdle to the broader U.S.-Iran peace talks.

The truce would pause the war between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group. Netanyahu’s announcement came shortly after President Donald Trump said on social media that the leaders of Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a truce that would begin at 5 p.m. Eastern time and after a flurry of diplomatic outreach from the Trump administration. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam of Lebanon said the country welcomed the ceasefire.

Israel has been discussing a deal only with the Lebanese government, which does not have direct control over Hezbollah, a group considered more powerful than Lebanon’s own military. Hezbollah has long rejected direct talks with Israel, though it has abided by some deals negotiated by the Lebanese government.

Already, points of possible contention were emerging Thursday.

A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon went into effect as Friday began in the Middle East, a truce that could lift a major obstacle to the United States’ peace effort with Iran and pause a devastating wave of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. (David Guttenfelder/The New York Times)

Netanyahu said Israeli troops would remain in southern Lebanon, where they have seized territory. Hezbollah, however, said in a statement from its media office that a ceasefire must not allow Israeli forces “any freedom of movement.” The statement did not say directly whether Hezbollah would abide by the truce. It said the group’s actions would be “based on how developments unfold.”

‘Woe

The fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, Iran’s most powerful proxy, has threatened to upend the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, which is

set to expire next week. Trump told reporters at the White House that the next in-person negotiations with Iran might occur this weekend. Trump said he would consider extending the pause in fighting if the United States is close to a deal with Iran. He has repeatedly suggested a deal is near.

It was not clear whether Lebanese displaced from the country’s south would be able to return home; Israel has signaled recently that it was planning to occupy large parts of the area even after the current conflict.

More than 2,100 people have been killed in Lebanon during the current round of fighting, Lebanese authorities say, and over 1 million residents displaced. At least 13 Israeli soldiers have also been killed, along with two civilians, according to Israeli authorities. Here’s what else we are covering: — U.S. threats: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday renewed U.S. threats to attack Iran’s power plants and other energy sites if its leaders did not agree to a peace deal.

— Iran talks: On Thursday, Pakistan said it expected to host a second round of negotiations between the United States and Iran but declined to give a date, as senior Pakistani mediators visited Tehran, the Iranian capital, in an effort to shore up the U.S.-Iran ceasefire.

to those who manipulate religion,’ pope says amid standoff with Trump

Pope Leo XIV is not backing down.

Amid a growing dispute with the Trump administration over the legitimacy of U.S. attacks in Iran, Leo used a speech Thursday in Cameroon to express “woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic and political gain, dragging that which is sacred into darkness and filth.”

“Blessed are the peacemakers,” he said, adding, “The world is being ravaged by a handful of tyrants, yet it is held together by a multitude of supportive brothers and sisters.”

The pope was speaking in a region of Cameroon where separatists have been clashing with the government for a decade, and he

praised local religious leaders seeking to end that conflict.

But against the backdrop of American efforts to use Christian theology to justify the Iran campaign, the pope’s words seemed as directed at the Trump administration as they were at separatist leaders and the government of Paul Biya, 93, the world’s oldest president and an authoritarian who has ruled Cameroon for more than 40 years.

The Trump administration has sought to portray its war in Iran as a “just war” backed by the will of God and Jesus Christ. Leo has stridently disagreed, saying previously that Jesus “does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war.”

That led to an extraordinary broadside Sunday from President Donald Trump, who at-

tacked the pope on social media as “terrible on foreign policy.”

On Monday, as the pope left for a tour through four countries in Africa, he said he had “no fear” of the Trump administration and would continue to protest war and speak out “loudly about the message of the Gospel.” The Trump administration continued to needle him, with Vice President JD Vance saying Tuesday that Leo should be more “careful when he talks about matters of theology.”

On Wednesday, the pope traveled to Cameroon, where he immediately spoke against the authoritarian rule of Biya. In a speech at the presidential palace Wednesday, Leo said that “public authorities are called to serve as bridges, never as sources of division” and that “authentic peace arises when everyone feels

protected, heard and respected, when the law serves as a secure safeguard against the whims of the rich and powerful.”

On Thursday, Leo traveled to Bamenda, an English-speaking region of Cameroon, which is led by a French-speaking national government. A violent secessionist movement centered in Bamenda has divided the country over the past decade.

Although the pope has not referred specifically to Trump or his administration since Monday, his words in Bamenda seemed to extend beyond local conflicts in Cameroon.

“The masters of war,” he said, “pretend not to know that it takes only a moment to destroy, yet often a lifetime is oft not enough to rebuild. They turn a blind eye to the fact that billions of dollars are spent on killing and devastation.”

When El Salvador’s prisoners go free, she’s there to pick them up

Sugey Amaya spends most of her nights outside a converted movie theater that is now a holding station for people passing in or out of El Salvador’s crowded prison system.

While her mother watches her children, she waits for inmates to be released from the prison facility, which is on the outskirts of San Salvador, the capital.

Amaya, 29, has become a fixture at the facility, known as El Penalito, retrieving men who are not allowed to leave unless someone is there to pick them up.

Like many Salvadorans, Amaya first encountered the prison system four years ago, when El Salvador’s government declared a state of emergency to crack down on the country’s vicious gangs, groups like MS-13 that terrorized Salvadorans and had become notorious around the world.

Under the state of emergency, declared under President Nayib Bukele, security forces were ordered to carry out mass arrests, and within months, tens of thousands of people were in custody.

Last year, some police officials said they had faced intense pressure to meet quotas and had resorted to flimsy evidence to make arrests. They said they believed that innocent people who were detained would later be released. But according to Salvadoran officials, fewer than 10,000 of the roughly 90,000 people imprisoned since 2022 have been released.

Bukele has credited his crackdown for bringing about a stunning turnaround in El Salvador, which quickly went from being one of Latin America’s most dangerous countries to one where people felt the safest, according to Gallup polls.

Today, the country has one of the world’s highest rates of incarceration, according to Human Rights Watch, with roughly 2% of its population of 6 million in detention — 1 out of every 50 people.

Salvadorans say their lives changed under the state of emergency: They could run businesses without being extorted, walk to the store at night.

Amaya moved into a small house on the outskirts of San Salvador in 2022 that she was told had previously been occupied by gang members.

But her beloved brother, the person she was closest to, had

for strangers, then taking them to a secondhand clothing stand to change out of their prison-issued white T-shirts, shorts and rubber sandals.

Then she made sure they got home.

The routine has become her life.

Men leave El Penalito carrying their release papers rolled up in their hands, she said. They have no money. Many are disoriented after months or years in prison.

The men are often shocked by her generosity, Amaya said.

A 35-year-old man who asked only to be identified by his first name, Josué, was released from prison around 3 a.m. on a summer night in 2023, with no family members there to receive him.

When he saw Amaya — who is 4-foot-9 and weighs less than 100 pounds — it seemed to him as if “an angel” had appeared, he said.

Sometimes, the inmates have nowhere to go. For a time, Amaya let those men stay overnight at her house, until relatives warned her it could be risky for her and her children.

been taken away. Alexis Amaya was detained in July 2022 as he made his way home after a shift at a Papa John’s pizzeria, Sugey Amaya said. He was 24 at the time.

Amaya learned that he had been accused of belonging to a gang and sent to prison, where he remains — a story common for many who belong to El Salvador’s lower classes.

Many families have seen more than one son go to prison under the state of emergency, known locally as “el regimen.” Some do not know exactly where their loved ones are: Prisoners are generally not allowed contact with relatives — no phone calls, no visits, no letters or emails.

When Amaya’s brother disappeared in 2022, she went to El Penalito, the holding station, only to be told he had been transferred to a massive prison known as Mariona.

As Amaya was frantically searching for information about her brother, she learned that inmates were not being freed from El Penalito if no one was there to receive them.

The Salvadoran government did not respond to questions about the legal basis for keeping the prisoners detained, but rights groups say that Bukele has granted the authorities broad discretion over who is released.

Without thinking too much about it, Amaya started signing

She never asks the released prisoners what they were incarcerated for. It makes no difference to her, she said.

“I see my brother’s face in them,” she said.

Amaya’s work has become a full-time job.

She gets by on the donations she receives from prisoners’ families, she said. The funds cover her travel costs, the clothes she buys the men, a bite to eat on the way home.

She has also become well-known among families who live far from the prisons where their loved ones are held — even as far away as the United States.

Some send her money to buy packages of food for their relatives because they cannot deliver them themselves.

These days, Amaya is taking law school courses, a path she says was influenced by all she has seen. But by nightfall, on most nights, she can be found back outside El Penalito.

When asked by prison employees why she keeps coming back, even when her brother’s name is never called, Amaya always gives the same reply.

“The ones who come with me — I get to ask them, ‘Where were you held? How do they treat you all in there?’ It helps to understand my brother’s world,” she says.

And she still has faith that one day, Alexis will appear.

Trump’s quest for more sway over Fed faces fresh hurdles

After years of criticizing the Federal Reserve’s leadership and trying to browbeat policymakers to slash interest rates, President Donald Trump is running out of time to install his pick to lead the central bank when Jerome Powell’s term as chair officially ends on May 15.

On Tuesday, Kevin Warsh will make his case to the Senate Banking Committee, which oversees the Fed and wields significant power over his ability to clinch a confirmation. That leaves the administration with only 24 days to get Warsh through an initial committee vote before the full Senate takes up his candidacy — a task that became all the more difficult this week.

Warsh’s nomination has been warmly received by Republican lawmakers. Yet standing in the way of a smooth transition is a criminal investigation by the Justice Department into Powell’s handling of renovations at the Fed’s headquarters in Washington.

The investigation threatens to leave Warsh in an extended limbo once the May deadline lapses given that a key Republican on the Banking Committee, Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, is refusing to advance the nomination until the legal threats against Powell end.

It also increases the odds that Powell — who has vowed to protect the Fed’s independence from the White House — stays on as a governor, a position he can hold until 2028.

Doing so would hand Trump a double loss. It would prevent the president from appointing someone to take Powell’s seat on the board of governors while complicating Warsh’s job once he eventually takes over as chair.

“They’re about to snatch defeat from the

Jerome Powell, the Federal Reserve chair, in Washington, Oct. 24, 2025. Powell’s term as chair of the Federal Reserve ends on May 15, 2026, but it appears increasingly likely that he will stay on in some capacity at the central bank after that. (Caroline Gutman/ The New York Times)

jaws of victory by pursuing this unsupported political investigation,” said Scott Alvarez, who previously served as the Fed’s general counsel. Trump on Wednesday conveyed no intention of dropping the investigation, saying it was about more than a criminal inquiry into the renovations and was also a “probe on incompetence,” in reference to Powell. The president added that he would fire Powell if he did not resign from the Fed after his term as chair ended.

In January, the Justice Department issued subpoenas to the central bank, prompting Powell to deliver a video message denouncing the move and calling out the president for seeking to use legal threats as a cudgel to compel the Fed to lower borrowing costs.

Judge James Boasberg of U.S. District Court quashed the subpoenas last month, writing in his ruling that “there is abundant evidence that

the subpoenas’ dominant (if not sole) purpose is to harass and pressure Powell either to yield to the president or to resign and make way for a Fed chair who will.”

Boasberg later denied the department’s request for him to reconsider his judgment.

Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia and a longtime ally of Trump’s, has yet to officially appeal the ruling. But, like Trump, she has staunchly defended the investigation. In the latest provocation, prosecutors from her office paid a surprise visit to the Fed’s active constructive site on Tuesday, drawing a rebuke from the Fed’s counsel.

If the Senate does not confirm Powell’s successor by May 15, the Fed chair told reporters last month, he will continue on as “chair pro tempore.”

“That is what the law calls for,” he said in an implicit signal that he would challenge any attempt by Trump to try to claim the authority to name a temporary chair. Powell also noted that this arrangement was what the Fed had done in the past, including in 2022 when he held that position before lawmakers confirmed him for a second term.

One worry is that the president will disregard this precedent and try to elevate Stephen Miran, whom he tapped last year to fill an expiring term. Gary Richardson, who served as the Fed’s historian and is now a professor of economics at the University of California, Irvine, suggested that the courts would side with Powell if Trump went down this path.

The Federal Reserve Act stipulates that “upon the expiration of their terms of office, members of the board shall continue to serve until their successors are appointed and have qualified.” That has long been interpreted to apply to the chair. The board also has so-called

delegation authority, meaning that in the event of a vacancy for the chair position, the board has the latitude to delegate its responsibilities to a single member to serve in a temporary capacity.

A recent spate of legal cases concluded that, when an agency position requires Senate confirmation, the president cannot appoint an acting person without the upper chamber’s buy-in.

The historical record also supports Powell’s view, Richardson said. He pointed to Arthur F. Burns, whose term as chair ended on Jan. 31, 1978. After President Jimmy Carter declined to reappoint him, Burns stayed on for an additional five weeks until the Senate confirmed his successor, G. William Miller.

Burns departed the Fed altogether about a month after Miller took over as chair, noting that he “deserves the fullest opportunity to establish his leadership at the helm of our nation’s central bank.” It was reported around that time that he would have stayed on only if he considered his successor “dangerous” to the economy.

The primary concern is what Trump will be able to accomplish if he has more of his supporters on the Fed’s seven-person board. A majority would enable him to have significantly more sway over policy decisions and matters relating to staff. Legal experts are particularly worried about the fate of the 12 regional Fed presidents, who can be removed if four governors agree to do so.

By remaining at the Fed as a governor, Powell would be able to blunt Trump’s impact. But it would also bring about new challenges, especially for Warsh, who will inherit a very complicated economic backdrop as the war with Iran rages on.

Santeros, Criollos and Vaqueros post wins in BSN

The Santeros of Aguada, Criollos of Caguas and Vaqueros of Bayamón all recorded victories in Superior National Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) games on Wednesday night.

At Ismael “Chavalillo” Delgado Coliseum in Aguada, the Santeros defeated the Leones of Ponce, 83-77.

The visitors stayed in the game despite the home team dominating the first half, 4235, making defensive adjustments in the second half to remain in the fight.

Ponce took the lead, 69-67, with 6:15 remaining in the fourth quarter on a basket by Johned Walker.

However, Aguada responded in the final stretch with a three-pointer by Robiel Morales and a basket in the paint by Giancarlo Rosado that flipped the score to 72-69 with 4:51 left as the Santeros held on for the win.

Rosado led the way for the Santeros (6-2) with 24 points, followed by Rigoberto Mendoza with 20. John Brown III and Morales added 10 points each.

Jordan Murphy led the Leones (3-7) with

26 points, while Jezreel de Jesús scored 20.

At Fernando “Rube” Hernández Coliseum in Bayamón, meanwhile, the Vaqueros defeated the Mets of Guaynabo, 88-73.

The Vaqueros (6-4) established an early lead and maintained control throughout most of the contest. Although the Mets (3-6) managed to narrow the gap to just five points in the fourth quarter, the Vaqueros pulled away once again in the final minutes.

Xavier Cooks led the Vaqueros with 15 points, Stephen Thompson Jr. added 13 points, and veteran Javier Mojica chipped in 12.

The Mets’ Ismael Romero led all scorers with 21 points while pulling down 8 rebounds.

At Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Hato Rey, the Criollos defeated the Cangrejeros of Santurce, 105–96.

Moses Brown led a balanced attack for Caguas (6-2) with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Michael O’Connell had 19 points and 7 assists off the bench, Travis Trice had 17 points and 13 assists, Christian López Santiago contributed 14 points off the bench and Louis King added 13 points and 6 assists.

Malik Beasley led Santurce (4-3) with 22 points, while Ángel Rodríguez had 15 points and 6 assists, Isaiah Piñeiro and reserve

Ángel Matías scored 14 points apiece, and Devon Collier grabbed 12 rebounds off the bench.

Iran will be in US for World Cup, FIFA leader says

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said earlier this week that the “Iranian team is coming, for sure,” to play in the World Cup in the United States this summer.

Horario: Lunes a Viernes | 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

Speaking at CNBC’s Invest in America Forum in Washington on Wednesday, he said, “We hope that by then, of course, the situation will be a peaceful situation. As I said, that would definitely help. But Iran has to come.”

The comments come as peace talks between Iran and the United States have not yet resumed, and a ceasefire is set to expire next week. President Donald Trump has said that it would not be “appropriate” for Iran to participate in the tournament this summer and that it may be a risk for the players’ “own life and safety.”

It remains unclear whether Iran will pull out of the tourna-

ment. Iran’s sports minister, Ahmad Donyamali, told state TV in February the team “certainly” would not participate after strikes by the United States and Israel killed Iran’s supreme leader.

In March, Iran said it was negotiating with FIFA to move its matches from the United States to Mexico, which is co-hosting the tournament along with Canada. But FIFA made it clear that it had no plans to do so.

“Sports should be outside of politics,” Infantino said at the CNBC event.

Iran was drawn to play two group-stage games in Los Angeles, home to one of the world’s largest Iranian diasporas, and one in Seattle. The United States is in a different group and could play Iran only if both teams advance in the tournament.

In 1998, Iran earned its first World Cup victory by knocking out the United States in a memorable 2-1 win that drew thousands of celebrants into the streets of Tehran, Iran’s capital. In 2022, the United States squeaked by Iran 1-0 in a dramatic match to advance to the round of 16.

Jordan Murphy (34) led all scorers with 26 points, but Ponce fell to Aguada on Wednesday night. (Jorge Correa)
