Barnsley has officially opened the first phase of its groundbreaking Health and Wellbeing Hub at the Alhambra Shopping Centre, with Health Secretary Wes Streeting MP visiting to mark the occasion.
The hub is part of a national ambition to deliver more healthcare in community settings, and Barnsley is leading the way by transforming the former Wilko unit into a modern, accessible health facility.
The first services to relocate include Ophthalmology, Optometry and Retinal Screening, with Rheumatology, Dermatology and Orthotics to follow.
As part of his opening remarks before he cut the ribbon, Mr Streeting commented on the benefit of a town centre location:
"It's been really inspiring to be here today, because what we're seeing right here in the heart of Barnsley town centre is the future of the NHS.
“We go to so many places at the moment where high streets and shopping centres are in decline, but what we’re seeing right here in the Alhambra is a shopping centre and a town centre that is actually on the up.”

Additional outpatient services will move to the Alhambra throughout 2026–2028 as part of a phased rollout.
Speaking at the event, Barnsley Hospital CEO Richard Jenkins said:
“We were absolutely delighted to welcome the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care to Barnsley.
“We’ve been listening to what our patients, their families and our colleagues tell us and it’s clear that there is a real appetite for bringing more health services to a town centre location which is easy, convenient, modern and linked with other services and facilities.”

Barnsley Hospital Protective Services colleagues Lisa Corbridge and Mike Lees were invited by Professor Caroline McMullan of Dublin City University to present the NHS Protective Services Model and ‘Barnsley BC‐Lite’, demonstrating how adaptive business continuity integrates with security management.
Delivered to the Emergency Management Institute of Ireland at DCU Business School, the session achieved record attendance both in‐person and online. The presentation showcased a unique ten‐year NHS research partnership underpinning Dr Monica Kelly’s doctorate, leading DCU to request further details to adopt the model.

Ben is the Healthy Hospital Programme Manager at Barnsley Hospital, leading the Healthy Lives Team - a specialist public health service embedded within the Trust. The team brings together smoking cessation, alcohol care and early help support for patients and staff. Ben works closely with partners to ensure seamless, stigma-free pathways to care and focuses on connecting hospital and community services, so no one falls through the gaps.
His leadership reinforces addiction as a health condition, ensuring timely, compassionate support, including staff self-referral and family early help services.
