This week we officially opened the new Frailty SDEC unit, marking a major step forward in care for older people.

While the dedicated facility is new, the service has already been delivering significant benefits to patients and the wider urgent and emergency care system from a temporary location over the past few years. The move into a purpose-built home represents the next stage in the service’s development and reflects the Trust’s ongoing commitment to improving care for older people.
Remember Me As I Was And How We Were - Not As I Am
The philosophy behind the service is illustrated by a piece of artwork from renowned Sheffield artist Pete McKee.
Dr Kath Shakespeare regularly uses this artwork to explain the importance of person-centred care and sees it as a powerful reminder to look beyond a patient’s immediate medical needs.
Patient Margaret Robinson cut the ceremonial ribbon at a celebration event with colleagues on Monday.

Hannah has done a phenomenal job engaging patients in meaningful and enjoyable activities that have had a hugely positive impact on both wellbeing and rehabilitation within the unit. She consistently goes above and beyond, often creating personalised resources and materials in her own time at home to ensure activities are interactive, inclusive and memorable for patients.
Patients are often more motivated to participate in their rehabilitation following these sessions, which ultimately supports discharge home.

In only a few months, this team has managed to make spectacular improvements in patient care, resulting in Barnsley being 7th place out of 167 hospitals nationally for Best Practice Tariff for hip fractures. This has been a mammoth effort by our fantastic ortho-geriatricians, amazing ANPs, incredible trauma coordinators, and brilliant nursing staff.
And let's not forget the ward doctors, anaesthetists and the rest of the orthopaedic team.

Congratulations to Sarah Parr, Care Support Worker in Maternity for her Cavell Award!
Sarah was shy when she started working in maternity at Barnsley but has grown in the years she has been here. She cares deeply about her colleagues and has organised many raffles to raise money to provide extra treats for colleagues working over the festive period, as well as all year round.
She is passionate about making sure midwives have everything they need for their day-to-day working to provide safe care from stores and stock and highlighting change to make things more seamless.

Congratulations to Carly Mann, Activity Coordinator on Ward 21 for her Cavell Award!
Carly has been praised for being engaging, motivated and committed to her role.
She is compassionate, caring and supportive to patients who would not ordinarily have been able to have this done. She has given patients massages, washed their hair, curled their hair and pampered them as they were her own relatives.
She goes above and beyond to ensure patients feel valued and cared within an environment and a time when they are vulnerable.

This year, Consultant General Surgeon Hanif Shiwani celebrates 25 years of service with Barnsley Hospital! When asked what stands out during his time, he said:
“Reaching 25 years at Barnsley Hospital is a deeply meaningful milestone for me. I joined the Trust with enthusiasm, determination and a desire to improve services for patients. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working in both clinical and managerial roles, helping to develop laparoscopic surgery, day-case laparoscopic cholecystectomy and hernia services, and training courses for surgeons.
“The hospital has given me opportunities, lifelong friendships and many memorable experiences. I arrived with enthusiasm, I have remained with enthusiasm, and I still want to work hard for our patients, our trainees and the Trust. I am grateful for this recognition and proud to have served the NHS for 25 years."
