Wednesday, 22nd April, we’re taking a moment to recognise the admin professionals who support our teams day in and day out. Their organisation, patience, and attention to detail help create a workplace where everyone can do their best work. The role of admin professionals is wide and varied, supporting countless teams across the trust. No matter the setting, their contribution brings consistency, clarity, and calm to busy environments. They strengthen services, support colleagues, and play an essential part in how we work together.

WELLNESS WITH LASTING IMPACT
Sue Burgan is a familiar and friendly face across the Trust, known for her passion for supporting colleagues’ health and wellbeing. Alongside her role as a Project Manager, Sue is a dedicated Menopause Advocate and Health and Wellbeing Champion, regularly championing initiatives that support and empower colleagues.
Sue is a strong believer in creating spaces where people can pause, connect and focus on their own wellbeing. She speaks warmly about her positive experience of attending BHNFT’s first Wellness Festival last year, describing it as a welcoming, uplifting event that offered something for everyone –whether that was learning more about physical health, mental
wellbeing, or simply taking some time out from a busy working day. Reflecting on the Festival, Sue highlights how valuable it was to discover new resources, receive health checks and feel part of a shared commitment to wellbeing.
Sue encourages colleagues to make the most of this year’s Wellness Festival, reminding us that taking time to look after ourselves is not a luxury, but an essential part of being able to support others and thrive at work. Tuesday 28 April 8:30am - 6pm Education Centre

I helped out at the 2025 Festival. I signed staff in and out and felt the real buzz of the event - people clearly left feeling positive about their visit.
As a participant, I had a blood pressure and cholesterol check, which picked up a slight concern and prompted me to visit my GP, something I might not have done otherwise. I also took part in a fitness check and was delighted to be praised for having the fitness of someone 10 years younger!
There was a great variety of relevant stalls, offering something for everyone.
I’m really looking forward to this year’s event on Tuesday 28 April at the Education Centre.

With the Trust now moving to the nationally agreed uniform for clinical staff, this is a timely opportunity to renew our personal commitment to wearing our uniform with pride. What we wear plays an important role in presenting a professional, confident image of Barnsley Hospital and reflects the values we’re proud to stand by.
Our Pride in our Profession campaign also encourages everyone to revisit the Trust’s dress code standards. This applies to all colleagues –including those who don’t wear a uniform – such as being bare below the elbows in clinical areas and following hand hygiene guidance.
Wearing our uniform correctly builds trust, supports infection prevention, and shows our commitment to patients, their families and each other.
Gateway’sGreatBake‑Off
A big thank you goes to the Gateway Team, whose charity bake‐off brought colleagues together in a colourful display of cakes, biscuits, and creativity — all in support of the Breast Care Appeal. Their efforts, along with everyone who baked, bought cakes, or joined in with the games, helped raise an amazing £293 for this fantastic cause.

Deconditioning EasterEggChallenge
As part of our Eat Drink Dress Move trust priority from the 30 of March until the 10 of April 56 patients across adult hospital wards took part in an Easter quiz egg trail where patients answered questions about both eggs and deconditioning. Thank you to staff and volunteers for supporting patients to increase their physical, cognitive and psychological wellbeing.
Easter and Eat Drink Dress Move prizes have been given to the wards that supported the most quizzes.

A reminder of the importance of confidentiality for our patients
Patient confidentiality is a fundamental NHS duty, and unauthorised access to patient records is a breach of the law. Inappropriate or unauthorised access is looking at patients records that you have no legitimate work relationship with. If you personally provide care to the individual or the team you are working in does or your team has
received a referral, this is a legitimate work relationship. You can access the patients records from home or out of hours if you have a legitimate relationship. Recent incidents have highlighted the consequences of accessing patient records without a valid reason. It is important all colleagues understand their responsibilities under data protection laws and NHS policies.
Colleagues do not have a right to access patient records other than as part of the patient’s care. Even if you know the patient personally, you must not access their records unless required for your role.

What is Unauthorised Access?
You must only access patient records if you have a legitimate reason directly related to your current job role. Looking at records out of curiosity or personal interest is strictly prohibited. Breaches can result in disciplinary action up to dismissal, and loss of professional registration (eg NMC, GMC). Legal Consequences can include criminal prosecution under the Data Protection Act 2018, fines of up to £500,000, and potential imprisonment under the Computer Misuse Act 1990. Serious cases may be reported to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), which can prevent future employment in regulated professions.
