The decontamination team are Brilliant Award winners Meet the team behind the equipment that keeps our hospital running.
Hollie reflects on a career supporting families Hollie Phillips, Midwife at Barnsley Hospital, said: “I have always wanted to work in the NHS and was particularly drawn to midwifery because it allows me to support women and families through such an important stage of their lives. After gaining experience with independent midwives, I trained at Sheffield and joined Barnsley Hospital when I qualified 10 years ago. “Since then, I’ve worked across a variety of maternity settings and currently work in triage, which I really enjoy. What has kept me at Barnsley is the people. Colleagues become friends, and there is a genuine commitment to improving care for women and their families. We are always looking for ways to develop our services, and it’s rewarding to be part of a team that shares that passion.”
Alison shines a spotlight on Barnsley’s maternity team Alison Macey, Midwife at Barnsley Hospital, said: “I have been qualified for almost eight years and joined Barnsley Hospital five years ago after returning to the area. What makes Barnsley special is the incredible teamwork across the maternity service. Midwives, doctors, maternity support workers and colleagues from across the hospital all work together with one goal – providing the best possible care for women, babies and families. “We are a close-knit team and genuinely support one another, especially during challenging shifts. No matter how busy things become, everyone pulls together to achieve the best outcomes and make sure colleagues feel supported. There is a real sense of community here, and that positive culture is reflected in the care we provide every day.”
We Said, We Did: How your feedback is making a difference Our annual Staff Survey is really important to us as it is the way in which we get the most representative view of our people’s experience of working at Barnsley.
I am often asked ‘Yes, but what happens as a result of our feedback?’ The feedback is reviewed in depth by our Exec Team and senior leaders and collectively we identify key themes each year to work on. Across the Trust local teams take actions off the back of what colleagues have said in their part of the Trust. Our new area of the Hub entitled ‘We said, we did’ is an area devoted to actions taken in response to colleague feedback. Why not share your story of what your team has done?

Maureen is the latest Cavell winner Congratulations to Care Support Worker Maureen McMhon on Ward 17 for her Cavell Award! Maureen was nominated for her commitment to her role and nothing is too much.
well cared for, they are groomed and beds and bed areas immaculately tidy.
She comes into work with such a positive attitude and encourages all her work colleagues to be happy. She is a team player and goes above and beyond to support everyone across the ward.

Decontamination team When patients come to Barnsley Hospital, they see the doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals caring for them. But behind the scenes, a dedicated team works hard every day to make sure staff have the equipment they need to provide that care. Our Decontamination team play a vital role across the Trust, supplying, maintaining and supporting equipment used throughout the hospital, including our theatres and clinical areas.
The team combines a wealth of experience with a new generation of talent. Many colleagues have dedicated years of service to the department, while others are beginning their careers through apprenticeship opportunities, helping to build the future of the profession.

Flying the flag for nursing excellence Congratulations to Sister/Charge Nurse Saritha Avallil Sudharshanan from General Medicine Ward, who has successfully completed her Professional Nurse Advocate (PNA) training programme. Achieving this Masters-level qualification required
dedication, determination and many hours of study in her own time. Saritha said: “I was a bit nervous when I started, especially when I had to do a ten-minute presentation, but my colleagues have been really helpful.”

A thank you following the inpatient survey results Following the publication of the Adult Inpatient Survey results, which place Barnsley 4th out of 36 organisations for overall patient experience, Chief Nurse Sarah Moppett would like to share her heartfelt thanks to colleagues across the Trust. “I would like to personally thank every member of staff who has contributed to these outstanding results. Achieving a top four ranking for overall
patient experience in these embargoed results is something we should all be incredibly proud of. These results reflect the dedication, compassion, professionalism and hard work that our staff demonstrate every single day. Whether you work in a clinical, support, corporate, administrative, facilities or volunteer-facing role, you play an important part in the experience our patients, carers and families receive. The kindness, respect and compassion highlighted by patients throughout the survey are a direct reflection of the values we see across our organisation every day.

Accreditation success for Paediatrics ED We are absolutely delighted to share the fantastic news that Paediatrics ED has achieved outstanding outcomes in their recent Ward Accreditation review. The team demonstrated excellent staff retention, a strong learning culture with advanced life‑support trained nurses on every shift, low levels of incidents, and consistently positive patient feedback.
The team’s proactive approach to learning from feedback, improving communication, and championing patient experience was celebrated, alongside their determination to create a welcoming, warm environment for children and families. Well done to the entire team on Paediatrics ED!
