QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
Project helps more patients access stop smoking support
This project aimed to increase the proportion of patients identified as smokers who were prescribed Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) within 24 hours of a nurse screening, from a baseline of 36% to 45%. MDT discussions led to barriers to prescribing being identified, and these were addressed through education, prescribing guides, reframing the issue, protocols, dashboards, automated referrals, prescribing bundles and enhanced support from the QUIT team.
As a result, compliance increased to an average of 42% with staff confidence having increased. The project also increased visibility of smoking cessation support and embedded training to promote timely NRT prescribing.

New TED Tool helping teams have conversations that matter Following your feedback in our most recent staff survey results, we know strong team relationships matter – but not everyone always feels respected or heard.
Thanks to your feedback, we’ve introduced the TED Tool (Team Engagement and Development). It’s a simple, evidence-based tool designed to help teams understand how effectively they’re working together and take action to improve. Through a simple online survey, TED measures eight key areas of team engagement and effectiveness, helping teams identify what's working well and where improvements can be made.
The Learning and Organisational Development Team is now delivering TED Team Leader training sessions. Following training, participants receive access to the TED platform and resources to help them get started. Further information and how to book to attend Team Leader training is available.
Feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive - as you’ll now read...
A really positive tool for helping teams to reflect, connect, and understand each other better.
Thank you again for the training and for introducing us to such a positive and engaging tool.
Initial training is provided for staff delivering the process, supported by a comprehensive range of documentation and resources.
I think the TED Tool is a fabulous way to encourage communication, provide support, and promote team building and engagement.
The survey itself is fairly straightforward to set up, much easier and more accessible than I had anticipated.
Sarah's dedication to Barnsley families Sarah O’Mara, Maternity Support Worker, said: “I joined Barnsley Hospital 26 years ago and have spent much of my career supporting patients in a variety of roles before becoming a Maternity Support Worker. For the past 15 years, I’ve been part of the maternity team, and what keeps me coming to work every day is the people – both the families we care for and the colleagues I work alongside. I take great pride in helping to create a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment for everyone who comes through our doors. From improving signage and accessibility to ensuring families feel comfortable and informed, it’s often the small changes that make a big difference. Being able to support families during such an important time in their lives is incredibly rewarding.”

CAVELL STAR
Congratulations to our Cavell winner Congratulations to Georgina Martin-Chambers, Day Surgery, for her Cavell Award! Following the recent opening of a new procedure room at the Alhambra Centre in Barnsley, Team Leader Georgina played a pivotal role in planning and delivering the move, as well as helping to establish and develop the service. During this period, managers were often required elsewhere across the Trust to manage Day Surgery services, leaving Georgina to lead many
aspects of the day-to-day running of the department independently. Georgina is an exceptionally reliable and dedicated colleague whose hard work and commitment never go unnoticed. Her contribution extends far beyond Day Surgery, benefiting the wider Trust as a whole. Nominate a colleague for a Cavell Star Award today
