Message From The Editor Thank you for all your support this last year. We are so grateful for the continued generosity of our Patrons, Friends, business supporters, staff and volunteers. There have been many changes recently and I would like to share with you some of the exciting things we have planned, including changes to our membership scheme. As you will see from our very festive front cover, The Roses is now firmly in the lead up to Christmas. This obviously includes our annual pantomine, which this year is the title ‘Sleeping Beauty’ - Both myself and Gail (our finance manager) have tried fighting for the role of Fairy but alas we were pipped to the post by a ‘professional’. In addition to the panto we see our Christmas Market returning for the second year and our regular Christmas Raffle will also be going ahead. This year w hav a top prize of £600 kindly sponsored by Alexander Burn.

Profile: Keith Norton What is your role at The Roses? I am the Chair of the Board of Trustees. I joined the Roses Board in late 2014 and became the Chair in July this year, taking over from Peter Cottingham. Why did you choose to work at/support The roses? I became a regular visitor to the Roses a few years back, and loved the relaxed, friendly atmosphere and the wide range of interesting events. I spoke to Caroline Lawrence one evening in my local pub about the Roses, and she encouraged me to join the Roses Development Group that existed at the time. I’m a retired Management Consultant and have a decent amount of business experience - the Roses needed help back then, just as it does now. Where have you come from? I have lived in Forthampton near Tewkesbury for 10 years. I love it! How would you like to see The roses develop? The Roses needs to rediscover its edge in Programming, and get Take Part back to its best. I don’t want to see the Roses become just an ordinary venue hosting the same things year after year, with no distinctive personality. We can do much better than that - and we will . . . What do you like to do when you are not at The roses? I’m busy, but that’s what I am used to. Apart from being Chair of the Roses, I am a NonExecutive Director of the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a Pension Trustee of the PA Group Pension schemes, a Life Patron of Cheltenham Festivals, a member of Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, and I play guitar in a covers band called ‘Slightly OCD’ that gigs locally. My son Piers lives at home with me, and he has just launched a Sports Relocation business at the age of 19 - I am a very proud Dad, and I help him however I can. Louise and I are very fond of music and events - we went to the Wilderness Festival a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it!

Phase 2 Update Thank you to everyone who contributed towards funding our architects fees so that we could submit an application of funding to Arts Council England. Unfortunately although the application was very strong and met all their criteria, it was not successful. In addition to this, we also received news from another funder that they had allocated all of their grants and were winding the trust up. In light of this, we will be postponing the delivery of Phase 2 until such time as we have more financial stability and new funding opportunities.

Money Advice Gifting Yourself into Trouble Can I gift my house to my children? Chris Hobbs, Tax Partner at CB, Chartered Accountants, discusses the implications of gifting. The most regular unexpected tax charge I see comes about when parents give an asset, such as a house, to their children thinking there will be no tax liability. It seems to be a commonly held belief that you can give assets away and, as you did not receive payment for them, there is nothing to pay tax on. Unfortunately, this is not the case. In the above situation, Capital Gains Tax will likely become an issue when the market value of the property will be used for calculating any capital gains tax and a large capital gain can accrue to the donor, particularly if the property has been owned for a number of years. As I say, a gift quite often results in an unexpected tax charge but with a little thought, this could be avoided. As so often with tax, “failing to plan really means planning to fail.” Making the gift to a discretionary trust, of which the child or children are beneficiaries, rather than outright to the child, can help avoid capital gain tax. However, if it is wished to get the asset into the child’s hands then further action will be necessary. Overall, this is a complicated area of taxation and unfortunately not at all straightforward!
