Welcome Welcome to the first brochure of 2018, packed full with a wide range of events and activities. The more time I spend at The Roses, the more I realise how diverse our programme is. I often challenge myself to come to something that I wouldn’t normally - and every time I do, it’s a very pleasant surprise. I encourage you to do the same . . . I am delighted to welcome the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars to The Roses on Friday 16 February. I am a member of the club, and the quality of the musicianship in the house band is extraordinary. Another personal favourite is the poet John Cooper Clarke, on Wednesday 21 February. And a special mention to local photographer Jack Boskett, a great supporter of The Roses over the years, who will be sharing his photos and stories with us on Saturday 3 March. We always have a varied and stimulating film programme. With awards season well under way, this is our busiest time for film and you will find some of the biggest and most critically acclaimed films of the year in this brochure. In order to bring you the best titles as close to release as possible, this season we are only putting dates and times against films in January and February, along with information on further titles that are likely to play in the following weeks. Dates for these films and other new releases will be announced later in the season as more information becomes available. Finally, in addition to thanking our loyal and committed Staff, Volunteers, Friends and Patrons for all their help and support in recent months, I would like to thank Arts Council England for helping The Roses get through a challenging summer. We could not have done it without their commitment and financial support. I look forward to seeing you here soon!

Circomedia: Cut The Mustard
Fairport Convention has been making great music for over fifty years. Credited with originating British folk-rock music, the band has been through many changes but the current members retain a passion for live performance. This year’s Winter Tour will feature a mix of long-established Fairport favourites and new material from their most recent studio album 50:50@50 celebrating their Golden anniversary. The concerts will also feature an opening performance by the wonderful singer / songwriter duo Winter Wilson, who have become favourites on the folk scene in the UK and as far away as Australia.

Join the 2018 graduating class of Circomedia, Bristol for an evening of contemporary circus, physical innovation and boundless creativity. Using acrobatics, aerial, manipulation and lots of humour, Cut The Mustard is an evening to remember for all the right reasons. Circomedia is the longest running provider of full-time circus-based education in the UK, offering informal classes from age 5 upwards and BTec Diploma, Foundation and BA degrees, and an MA in Directing Circus. Join The Roses Youth Theatre’s Young Company and Company groups as they perform their annual showcase on the theatre’s stage. These groups have worked on every aspect of the production themselves during their weekly term-time sessions. William Fisher is a working-class 19-year-old living with his parents in the fictional town of Stradhoughton in Yorkshire. Bored by his job as a lowly clerk for an undertaker, Billy spends his time indulging in fantasies and dreams of life in the big city as a comedy writer. He also happens to be engaged to two girls - and madly in love with a third! Based on Keith Waterhouse’s groundbreaking 1959 novel, Billy Liar is an enduringly popular play that is as funny and relevant now as it was over fifty years ago.

John Cooper Clarke John Cooper Clarke shot to prominence in the 1970s as the original ‘people’s poet’. Since then his career has spanned cultures, audiences, art forms and continents. Today, JCC is as relevant and vibrant as ever, and his influence just as visible on today’s pop culture. Aside from his trademark ‘look’ continuing to resonate with fashionistas young and old, and his poetry included on the national curriculum syllabus, his effect on modern music is huge - his influence can be heard within the keen social observations of the Arctic Monkeys and Plan B. With live music from The Demon Barbers (Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards), the Breaking Tradition Dance Company present a comical new version of their critically acclaimed folk and hip hop dance show. From cuts and bruises to false facial features, SFX specialist Michaela follows up her hugely successful summer 2017 workshop with two more, where she will again show participants how to create gruesome injuries and magical characters. The earlier workshop is ideal for beginners, whilst the afternoon session is suitable for those who have some understanding or experience in SFX make-up.
Learn the principles of weaving; the simple process of using warp and weft yarns to create fabrics using a lap loom. This workshop will cover all the steps in the creation of a small wall hanging, from warping the loom, to removing and finishing the final woven piece. You will be encouraged to explore and play with colours and textures. Feel free to bring along strips of fabric, beads, favourite yarns or anything you want to experiment with. All materials will be provided.
Working with The Roses’ resident wardrobe mistress Lou, you’ll work from your favourite books, discuss ideas and think about the importance of costume. You’ll learn about the design phase up to the finished sketches of your favourite characters. All materials are provided, and Lou will show you how to easily get your ideas onto paper using a range of tried and tested techniques.

Fees And Charges
A postage charge of £1 per booking applies if you wish to have your tickets posted to you. You can avoid this charge by collecting your tickets from the Box Office. A voluntary contribution will be requested with each transaction to help secure the future of The Roses.
Reservations & Refunds
Reservations: Payment is required for reserved tickets within 3 days of the reservation, or 3 days prior to the date of the event, whichever is the soonest. Any reserved tickets not paid for by this time will be released. Exchanges: At our discretion, tickets can be exchanged for a different performance of the same event. An administration fee of £2 per ticket applies. We do not offer exchanges on tickets for different events. Refunds: We do not offer refunds on any tickets unless the event is cancelled or postponed. If you are unable to attend a performance, and the performance is sold out, we will offer to resell your tickets and credit your account. Members may be credited on performances that they are unable to attend provided we are notified prior to the event.
Only food and drinks purchased on the premises can be consumed whilst at The Roses. We reserve the right to refuse admission to intoxicated or disorderly people. Age guidance stated for live shows (where applicable) is provided by the visiting companies. The Roses is unable to accept responsibility for accuracy.
Ticket Types Full price: Adults Concessions Available (where specified) to children aged 3 – 15, to people receiving a state pension, those in receipt of Disability Living Allowance, Job Seekers Allowance or other documented benefits. You may be required to prove eligibility. Under 3s go free, provided they sit on a parent or guardian’s lap. Concessions are £2 off tickets for live events (excludes Band C on banded events) and £1 off for film. Families £2 off adult tickets for all parties of 3-9 when the group includes at least 1 child. Each party must include at least 1 person under the age of 16 and 1 adult. We do not charge for children under the age of 3, provided they sit on a parent or guardian’s lap. 16-25s A limited number of seats are available at £5 off the advertised price across any live event that offers concessions (excludes Price Band C on banded events).
