Welcome It’s Spring! I’ve been attempting to contain my optimism as we head into the season of rebirth and new life, after learning the hard way over the last 2 years. But, it’s impossible to not let in a little bit of hope and happiness this year. It feels like there really is change in the air. For the first time since March 2020 we are seeing shows sell out, and a packed programme of music, theatre, comedy and dance with world class performers that runs all the way to 2023. We’re still remaining vigilant against Covid with many safety measures in place, but it’s impossible not to get excited as we welcome audiences, old and new, back into The Roses. However, there’s one area of our programme where we need your help. Hidden behind the headlines about record-breaking figures for Bond and Spider-Man, cinema going has crashed by 70% compared to pre-pandemic levels. There’s nothing like being at the cinema. The thrill and sense of immersion in a story and place cannot be recreated at home even with that shiny 64" TV. I encourage you to get back in front of our 30ft box of joy, rediscover the magic of the big screen and #SaveCinema. You can always find our latest films online. Finally, a huge thanks to everyone who has supported us, visited us, and volunteered with us over the last 2 years. Because of you, we’re thriving!

An Update It would be hard to deny that 2021 wasn’t extremely challenging at The Roses. Unlike 2020, where retrospectively, it feels like lockdowns were something of a luxury in terms of coping with Covid, in 2021 we’ve had to work at full pelt while dealing with a worsening pandemic culminating in the huge financial impact of Omicron on our Pantomime. However, we are truly grateful that 2021 was really defined by our success. In October we were one of 11 organisations out of 925 nationally to be awarded extra money from the Culture Recovery Fund. £467,000 will go towards transforming the customer experience of The Roses including a new website, improved Front of House area and a refurbished studio and event space. Thanks to Tewkesbury Borough Council and Central Government grants, we also have a large grant to set up and launch a new community department, Get Creative,
Panto was a success, but the threat of Omicron took a toll on final numbers
and a new youth group, Roses Young Creatives. We’ll be focusing on reaching young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and helping develop the next generation of creative talent.
We'll be heading back to Victoria Gardens this year, with another original production - see page 23
This has really helped bolster our ambitions for 2022. This year we’ll be developing three new shows as well as launching our first regional tour. We also want to refurbish our backstage area, which is firmly stuck in 1974 (when The Roses was built), and we also need to replace our end-of-life cinema projector.
We wouldn’t have got through the last 2 years without the support of you, our audiences; donors, and supporters. We are also blessed to have a very committed and loyal volunteer team, who save The Roses thousands of pounds every year by acting as ushers, café and bar assistants.

Film at The Roses Cinema is changing. As the arts and entertainment industries slowly recover some semblance of normality as society emerges from the pandemic, cinemas are still struggling to attract audiences back to the big screen. This is perfectly understandable. We have all become used to having to find entertainment at home, and the on-demand era has now made it all too easy to make this the default option for an evening's entertainment even now we all have the freedom to choose. Whilst audiences for live shows at The Roses have bounced back with glee, our film audiences are still much lower than they were two years ago. We know that listing all the films in this brochure used to make life easier, but in order to be responsive to changing release strategies, it is no longer practical for us to programme more than a few weeks ahead. This does, however, allow us to and bring you the most popular and acclaimed films much earlier than had previously been possible, so you won't have to wait too long to see them as the film makers intended - on the big screen! We sincerely hope that if you previously enjoyed film at The Roses, you will choose to come back. 2022 promises a wealth of new releases, and we plan to show as many as we can!

Stitch Story is coming to a venue near you! Come and be part of this wonderful community project, share your memories of Tewkesbury and have a go at a stitch or two. We are inviting ALL Tewkesbury residents to leave their mark on our large community embroidery; this legacy to the town is your chance to share what Tewkesbury means to you. We are taking Stitch Story to schools, community groups, businesses, sports events, shops, markets and perhaps even a pub or two! Forty years ago, Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran gave up their day jobs to become full-time comedy writers: their mission, to make millions laugh. The following decades took them from Borehamwood to Pinewood via Hollywood. They created a hatful of hit TV shows, including Shine On Harvey Moon, The New Statesman, Love Hurts, Goodnight Sweetheart, and of course Birds of a Feather; winning two BAFTAs and an Emmy along the way. “Reality! I wrestled with reality for forty years, doctor, and I’m happy to state that I’ve now got reality just where I want it!”
Luke Daniels Luke is a virtuoso musician and singer who performs classic folk songs alongside traditional tunes. Luke has been touring since the mid 1990’s with Riverdance, De Dannan and Cara Dillon but from 2012 released four critically acclaimed albums of his own songs. Revolve and Rotate in 2014 used a restored Victorian polyphon (music box) that played his own unique accompaniments to classic folk songs such as Canadee-IO. Originally from Oxfordshire, Luke developed a passion for traditional music as a child, but his unique style of playing guitar flowered in his teens after discovering singers such as Nick Drake and John Martyn.

Tewkesbury Arts and Drama Society (TADS) celebrates a long-awaited return to the stage with this inventive production of Mary Chase’s classic comedy. Since their mother’s death, Veta has been living with elder brother Elwood in the old mansion he inherited.
