Welcome... As Spring has sprung it’s also been a time of change at The Roses. In February a new Chair, Gerald Hawke, was voted into post to lead a board that includes 5 new members. Between them they combine over 150 years worth of experience in the entertainment & theatre industry, business management and fundraising. Theatre Director Hannah Kester decided to stand down in April to spend time with family, and Keith Norton, previous Chair of Trustees, left to take on a range of exciting opportunities, alongside fellow Board member Suzy Hillier. We would like to thank them all for their immense contribution to the theatre and send best wishes for the future. The new board and our fantastic theatre management team will be stewarding in a new era at The Roses. Watch this space! In the meantime, we have a hugely exciting programme set up for the rest of the year, that we look forward to seeing you all at. Major highlights include top stand up comedian Jack Dee, Disney’s The Lion King from its UK release date of 19 July and this year’s pantomime, Aladdin. In February this year the theatre launched the 10x2 fundraising campaign, with a goal to get 2,000 people to donate £10 each to support the future of The Roses. We are thrilled that in just 8 weeks we have nearly reached our target. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this. If you haven’t donated yet, but would like to you can find information on the website. As always we are hugely grateful to our friends, benefactors, patrons, volunteers and supporters. As a thank you the Board of Trustees will be holding an event in September 2019 to introduce ourselves and talk about plans for 2020 and beyond.

Fran, what’s your role at The Roses? I work on Box Office on Mondays and Tuesdays. You might also see me behind the bar from time to time!
What is your favourite part of the job?
The customers, without a doubt. My colleagues are pretty amazing too.
And your least favourite? I absolutely hate it when a show or film has to be cancelled and we have to disappoint people.
Where would you like to see The Roses in 5 years?
It’s a bit of an unrealistic dream, but I would love us to be able to host the big touring musicals and plays.
How would you improve The Roses if money was no object? I would make the backstage area much bigger so that we can host bigger productions... whilst I’m at it I’d also find room for another 400 seats!
How do you switch off from work?
I’m only here two days a week so I wouldn’t say I need to switch off, but my children (aged 11 & 15) are pretty good at keeping my mind on them when I’m at home!
Finally, what are you most looking forward to in 2019? Finally finishing my kitchen... we started it on 25th August last year (not that I’m counting!).
200 Club Re-open Following the launch of our in-house lottery last summer, we are pleased to announce that we will be running our 200 Club again this year. The club is so named because no more than 200 people will be entered into any one draw. For a modest sum of £24 you will be entered into 12 monthly draws, each offering a first prize of £100, a second prize of £25 and a third prize of a pair of tickets. The first draw will take place on Thursday 1 August and you can enter before then by calling Box Office or visiting www.rosestheatre.org/support/200-club
Milestone School Over the last few months The Roses has been working with The Milestone School, Gloucester on an educational project at the theatre. Each week pupils have come to The Roses to work on a project aimed at developing communication through performance. Using theatre games, exercises, image work, mask work and improvisation exploring choices and consequences of actions, the project has acted as a powerful and effective vehicle for inviting individuals to examine their own behaviour and as a catalyst for promoting personal development and change. Active therapeutic exercises help to build group cohesion and raise discussion around issues relevant to the student group. Workshop games explore how to facilitate the creation of frozen images and simple role play is used to examine thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Opportunities in the sessions are used to create rapport building including: basic questioning techniques, encouraging participation and working with resistance. It enables students to explore and broaden their understanding of an issue relevant to their lives and their experience, bring their own knowledge and opinions to the process and develop skills of communication, negotiation and compromise. The project concludes on Thursday 11 July when all of the students involved will take to The Roses’ stage to deliver their performance.
Goodbye Shirley It’s with great sadness that we say farewell to Shirley Grant at the end of May, as she moves on to a new job. Shirley has been a huge part of The Roses for 16 years and will be missed by colleagues and customers alike. We are sure you will join us in wishing Shirley all the very best for the future and thanking her for the immeasurable contribution she has made over the years - she truly will be irreplaceable!
