The Roses Review Welcome As I write this, the sun is shining and birds are tweeting and the knitters are nattering. We have recently been exploring ideas and ways of engaging with our local community more. You may be aware that we are very lucky to have Jane Griffiths in our team. Jane is a community builder with Barnwood Trust and is based at The Roses. Jane is an asset to both The Roses and the community and is always on the look out for opportunities to help the community access fun, engaging and meaningful activities. I am sure that she would welcome the chance to say hello if you have any groups that need support or ideas for activities. Jane helped our knitters (K2Togs group) to facilitate their weekly meetings. This provides an opportunity to stay active, enjoy creativity, eliminate social isolation and provides many with a much-needed source of peer support. We all hope you enjoy this issue of our newsletter and look forward to seeing you all at The Roses soon.

Exciting outdoor theatre returns to Victoria Gardens this summer with 2 fantastic plays. As You Like It, by MadCap Theatre, comes to Victoria Gardens on Saturday 15 August at 7pm. Romeo & Juliet, by Oddsocks Theatre Company, takes place on Tuesday 29 August at 7pm. Beforehand, from 5.30pm, you can enjoy a barbecue which is kindly sponsored by Warners Budgens.

Priority Booking
Our Next Live Screening
I have long had the difficult job of juggling the demands of promoters with our quarterly brochure schedule. Historically, we have always put events on sale seasonally, and published priority booking periods within each brochure. However, over the last few years things have changed, and I now need to do things a little differently. I have had to find a way to keep promoters happy, and preserve the priority booking period that so many of you value. Let me explain... Promoters like to go on sale as soon as a show is confirmed. This can be up to a year in advance. Obviously, it’s in everyone’s best interest to do this - particularly as so many shows deliver their own marketing campaigns before our brochure is released. We miss out on that if we’re not on sale. Going forward (and some of you may have spotted this already) I’ll be putting new shows on sale monthly. As a rule, Patrons will be able to book on the 1st of the month, Friends and Seat Donors on the 4th, and the general public on the 7th. This makes life easier for me as it means I don’t have to put an entire season on sale with each brochure a time consuming process. It makes life easier for The Roses as it means steadier income from ticket sales. It makes life easier for visiting companies as they have longer to sell their show. And I hope it will make life easier for you too - you can look forward to receiving exciting notifications from me on a far more regular basis! To enable us to communicate with you faster, and to keep our postage costs down, please make sure we have your email address. I hope you enjoy the new season of events and activites here at The Roses.
We are delighted to announce our second live broadcast. Following a successful pilot in March, which was supported by Arts Council England, the next boradcast is now being planned for Thursday 8 June, with EDge, the postgraduate performance company of London Contemporary Dance School. We chose EDge both for its exciting artistic content, and because the company are keenly interested in exploring live streaming themselves. In EDge, thirteen dancers will perform pieces by four of the most innovative choreographers working in dance today. Each choreographer has their own distinct style, with influences as diverse as plant biology, touch, escape and the classical Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam. As well as planning more live broadcasts (the next few will also be free to watch as we refine the viewing experience), we are also putting together hire packages, which will mean that other companies can hire our equipment and expertise in order to live stream their own content. It’s an exciting commercial prospect for us and we have already had keen interest - watch this space!

Meet Our New Patron Last week we met with Paralympian Mel Nicholls, who has agreed to become our first Honorary Patron. Mel, from Tewkesbury, is a British wheelchair athlete specialising in middle distance events in the T34 classification. She competed in the 2012 and 2016 Summer Paralympics and won the Seville marathon this year. The Roses has had a relationship with Mel for a number of years, and has long been inspired by her unfailingly positive outlook. Having got into disability sport after suffering the effects of three strokes, Mel felt isolated and detached from the world before finally finding sport. She then went on to become a successful Paralympian, proving that anything can be possible with determination and grit. The Roses shares Mel’s views that being involved with many different activities including arts and entertainment is what makes us healthier and stronger in both mind and body. Mel says: “I love where I live and feel a real community on the area, something that is vital for so many. I have had great local support and want to give what I can within our community. As individuals we can be strong, but together we can be stronger.” Catherine Reese, Head of Development at The Roses, says: “It is fantastic that Mel has decided to come on board to support our cause. We feel that this partnership will help provide inspiration for people of all ages and capabilities to pursue their dreams, no matter what barriers they may face.” The Roses recognise the value of community involvement demonstrated by the commitment to outreach projects in the community and by hosting a Community Builder supported by Barnwood Trust, a charitable foundation dedicated to creating the potential in Gloucestershire for disabled people and people with mental health problems to make the most of their lives. All at The Roses are delighted to have Mel on board, and look forward to continuing a fruitful partnership with her. We are hoping that we can programme an ‘Evening with Mel’ later in the year. This is bound to be hugely popular and as Friends and Patrons you will be the first to know when this goes on sale.
Lift Update
A Fond Farewell
We had hoped by now to be bringing you some good news. But sadly, we are still without a working lift. This is despite receiving numerous promises from the installation company, even stating that they are on their way, only to not turn up. Please be reassured that we share your frustration and disappointment in this situation. Sharon, our Director, is making almost hourly phone calls to try and resolve this for everyone and as soon as we hear anything we will of course let you all know.
We want to wish our lovely Fundraising Officer, Hayley Wayre, the best of luck in her now role and life in High Wycombe. Hayley had been with The Roses since leaving school and is known and loved by everyone. We will miss her but she received an opportunity too good to pass up. With family still in the area, at least we know she will still pop in and say hi again regularly.

Thank You Our campaign to raise funds to commission our architects to create the detailed drawings for Phase 2 was a fantastic success and we can now, as promised share the drawings with you so that you can see what our vision for the future looks like. We have applied to the Arts Council England for funding from their smallscale capital fund and we hope to receive an answer over the summer whether this application has been succesful. This will guide us in terms of timescales for completing the rest of the fundraising and delivering the project. We will keep you updated once we hear more. Phase 2 will achieve the following: • A new studio to house some of the 10,000 community sessions we run each year; provide a new performance space for smaller scale work; a meeting room for local businesses and an Research and Development area for Gloucestershire’s talented artists • A redeveloped and fully accessible backstage area for our visiting artists • Additional office space to enable us to expand • More toilets, to cope with increasing demand

Community Corner Jane Griffiths, our Community Builder, gives us the low down on some of the exciting projects happening in our community.
Alley Cats We have had some fantastic art displays in our cafe bar over the last few months. My personal favourite was the Alley Cat project. Project Alleycat, which is a community project to promote interest in and revitalise Tewkesbury’s historic alleys, recently held an exhibition of community artwork at the Roses. Some of the pieces are destined to be put on permanent display in some of the alleyways as the project works to showcase this often overlooked bit of Tewkesbury’s history. The project has helped bring together local schools, businesses, professional and amateur artists and individuals. Project coordinator Bill Adie highlighted the community aspect of the project, saying ‘it’s about renovation, regeneration, but most important of all - it’s about the people!’
Knit & Natter The Roses’ own Knit & Natter group K2Togs, who meet weekly in the bar and produce knitted goods for many community projects and charities, recently joined forces with Chris Evans at the Butterfly Garden at Staverton. The group have added the Butterfly Garden shop to their ever growing list of good causes that they knit for, and produce knitted toys to be sold in the shop on site, which helps provide funds to keep the Butterfly Garden working with people of all ages dealing with disability of any kind. Chris recently suggested that the ladies might knit him a scarecrow coat which he could use when promoting the project. He may not have realised just how enthusiastically the group would take up the challenge - see picture! K2Togs meet every Wednesday from 10.30am 12.30pm, and new members are always welcome.
Winter Wonderland The Roses’ Christmas Market 2017 We are already looking forward to hosting our second Christmas Market. This year’s Winter Wonderland theme will be held on Saturday 18th November from 10am until 4pm. Mitton Manor Primary School sang carols in the auditorium for us last year and this year we would like to extend that invitation out to other schools who would love to be part of making the event fun and festive. We are currently looking for sponsorship of this event, stall-holders, volunteers and raffle prize donations.
