Celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community at college, a huge group of college residents gathered to learn and ask respectful questions about being part of the LGBTQIA+ comminuty at college. Snacking on cookies and drinking hot chocolate everyone discussed and chatted about their individuality. A special thanks to all those beautiful people who shared their experiences being part of the LGBTQIA+ community. And a very special thanks to everyone who came along to learn and find out more!

LGBTQIA+

Although this flag originally represented the gay proportion of the community, it is now used as a representation of the entire LGBTQIA+ community and is a sign of pride, love and respect.

What do the flags mean?

Wanting to learn more about what each flag stands for? Well here is just a select few of the flags of the LGBTQIA+ community!

A Recap of the LGBTea and an Account from Lydia

Please do not underestimate how important LGBTea is to have as an event for RMC. About one in ten of people are same sex attracted, not to mention those who may question their gender identity, and for those of us who are already out, we feel as though it’s our responsibility to create a strong LGBTQIA+ community at college.

My college is my family, and I want my family to feel safe. Monday’s event wasn’t a comfortable thing for me, nor for any of us, but we did it just for that one person in the group who thought that maybe they could be like us and for those people that may not be out of the closet yet. As we said, being queer is an incredibly isolating experience, so we want to make sure that people know who we are, and who they can go to for advice.

- Lydia (A block resident and LGBTQIA+ community member)

A collection of postgrads (and a few stow away undergrads) ventured down to S Conference Room on Wednesday night for the Postgrad Supper.

The evening featured an array of yummy delights and good conversation varying from uni life to different films and everything in between.

PostGrad Supper

It’s the start of the Pool Tournament! Games will be held weekly so make sure to come down and check it out! See the winners of each round on the poster on the wall near the table! Good luck everyone!

RMC Pool Tournament ....so far!

E Block Fire and Pizza Night

The fire pit and pizza night was exactly what we needed on a cold autumn night. The atmosphere of the night was great, we were able to relax around the fire and catch up with each other. It also allowed us to enjoy ourselves despite the stress of uni. The pizza was a welcome change from chicken and rice! This was for sure the best block event yet.

Cannot wait to see what is store for the future.

- Grace (E Block resident)

On Sunday the 6th of May, residents crowded around a healthy patter of tim tams, and other chocolate covered treats to play Jackbox tv in Middle A. First competition consisted of a range of abstract drawings making us all question our creative abilities in Drawful.

The battle continued in Quiplash as each player had to come up with an original answer that other residents had to vote on. It provided endless laughter and very interesting responses to the prompts. Shout out to Jen for her very ‘witty’ answers.

Until next Sunday A block!

stress management workshop

Last Tuesday night a group of tired, stressed out students attended Meredith’s Stress Night. We discussed the effects of stress (the list is pretty terrifying) and different strategies like mindfulness and setting SMART goals to better manage our workload and to keep it from taking over our lives.

Because it is a stressful time for everyone, here are some top tips to keep it at bay:

- Make sure you get good sleep, everyone needs a different amount so make sure you know how much you need

- Set attainable goals, using a guide like SMART goals can help you achieve this

- Remember to still have fun, work doesn’t have to be everything!

If you feel at any time like it is all too much, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with our counsellor, Meredith.

She is available on Tuesdays and you can set up an appointment by emailing her at: Meredith.wagstaff@rmc.nsw.edu.au.

There is also Campus Wellbeing ph. 9850 7497 and the 1800 CARE MQ (1800 2273 67) hotline available too.

Blood Donations!!

Julian’s Blood Donation:

If anyone is interested in giving blood don’t forget to contact our SVF Exec member

Caitlin! Blood donations are continuing throughout the semester and donating blood is a really great cause plus it will also help us beat DLC at another event!

Last week I had the opportunity to donate blood to the Red Cross as part of the blood drive that RMC is competing in against DLC. Donating blood is a very simple and rewarding thing to do and it’s so easy to donate. Simply sign up and make an appointment online and you’re good to go. They take one pint (560ml) of blood, which takes 5 to 10 minutes and you get free snack afterwards (free food is a good enough reason to do it, right?)

Once your donation has been used you receive a text message from the Red Cross. Yesterday I received a text saying that my blood had helped save lives at Prince of Wales Hospital.

Humans of RMC

Human #9 Kailash kumaranayakam

What is your favourite memory of RMC so far?

My favorite memory would have to be o-week. Coming in to exchange, we try to socialize and make a lot of friends as quick as we can. That whole week helped me meet a lot of people, and the activities that we all accomplished together were new and adventurous. Such as scav hunt, the fresher dance, tour de Mac. It took me out of my comfort zone, which was a nice experience being all the way on the other side of the world. I would have to say it was one of the most fun weeks of my life.

What do you study? And what is your favourite part of your degree?

I am a double major(degree) back home at Rutgers University in Mathematics and Statistics. I love numbers in general, and I would say I am pretty good at dealing with them. My friends can tell you, that I’m always doing something with numbers in my head for no reason. I also feel like those two degrees can help me be very versatile when looking for a career. A strong background with numbers would be resourceful in any job field.

What has been your favourite college event so far and why?

The fresher dance by far. I am very competitive, coming from a strong sports background, and the pressure of having to beat DLC made it even more fun. Both Laurens worked extremely hard to create a great dance for us and for us to pull it off with minimal mistakes and destroy DLC was a great feeling. Plus, whenever we hear the song anywhere, we just start doing the dance, it’s going to be a part of me for a while.

I am a huge Disney fan. I love everything Disney, as far as princesses, the songs they create, the movies that are made, tv shows, whatever it may be. I have two sisters and they’re crazy in love with It also, so that made me fall in love with it. I find it interesting of myself because when else do you meet a 20 year old male who loves Disney.

Where are you from? Does it differ greatly from Sydney?

I am from the States, but I’m originally from India, but I tell people I’m from the States, and specifically from the best state, New Jersey. I have a lot of pride being from there, being it is the little brother of New York. It is very different, as people are always in a rush and life is a lot more frantic. People back home are also a lot more aggressive and arrogant to the people around them, compared to Australia where people are a lot more relaxed and nicer.

While you’re in Australia what are you most looking forward to seeing?

I’ve travelled a lot so far, but I came this far just to take in all the beauty Australia has to offer. I want to be able to see all the tourist spots and also all the the natural spots that nobody knows about. I also came here looking for a kangaroos and koalas, I’m planning to take them back home because Australia doesn’t deserve them.

What did you do over the mid-semester break?

I went to New Zealand over the 2 week break with other exchange students, and it was a great experience. I went to South Island specifically, and there was so much nature to enjoy, it was breathtaking. I was able to skydive and bungee jump there as well, and really learn the culture of the island. Kiwis and sheep, that’s all.

Human #10 Kaanchi Bavle

What is your favourite memory of RMC so far?

My favourite memory by far is the first day of college, when ‘’awkward lunch’’ was held for freshers and o-week. I remember struggling with my four suitcases up the carpark of RMC. It was when I smiled at Mary Scott and she mistook me for a staff member because of my white top. We then talked during fresher dance practice and clicked straight away at Strike Night, and this led to our wonderful and crazy Bestfriendship over the three years at college. This was the week I met so many people and random conversations happened in the famous common room while playing table tennis! I will never forget RMC common room chills and meeting people by joining in a pool game.

What do you study? And what is your favourite part of your degree?

I study Bachelor of Applied Finance, currently in my third year! Finance is certainly the lifeblood for all industry sectors as without finance nothing would function. I really enjoy my degree and am fascinated by the many career choices it offers. I enjoy learning about investments, portfolio management and overall economics that influences the broader economy.

What has been your favourite college event so far and why?

I have definitely enjoyed each one of RMC’s commencement dinners, formal dinners, Halloween cruise and International nights, but I must say the latest international night was different for me as for the first time I choreographed a Bollywood dance, performed in it and got to be a flag bearer, holding the Indian Flag which was something I was looking forward to do for the last two years but never got a chance.

What’s an interesting fact about you?

I wear 15 rings, two on each finger! And I am tongue tied, therefore I can’t lift my tongue up to the roof of my mouth as there is no point (no pun intended) but seriously my tongue doesn’t have a point! And I do make pretty great puns, (ask anyone ;))

Where are you from? Does it differ greatly from Sydney?

I was born in Baroda, Gujurat (Western State of India). I came to Australia when I was 7 years old, first living in Sydney then moving to Newcastle, NSW. I still remember all childhood memories from India, and I love to go back every year to visit family and friends! Newcastle and Sydney are where I did all of my education, school to now final year of university. Newcastle, where I live currently with my parents, differs from Sydney as it’s more rural and nature based with less traffic less population and many beaches, shops, walking trails and lagoons near my house!! Having best of both worlds I enjoy travelling around.

While you’re in Australia what are you most looking forward to seeing?

What did you do over the mid-semester break?

Hahaha I studied…did assignments and of course procrastinated, so chilled with parents, went to the beach, caught up on movies, shows and took lots of naps!

What would be an Indian tradition that you would like to see more of in Australia?

Most Indian traditions already run in Australia, however wouldn’t mind having ‘Garba’ a Gujurati dance festival on a larger scale, or Diwali- festival of lights, sharing sweets, lighting up streets/ homes and dressing in traditional clothes and meeting friends and family.

I look forward to visiting more places in Australia, I love scenic views, lakes, high-rise buildings and night city lights. I definitely want to visit Melbourne and more coastal walks around Sydney.

Don’t forget! If you want to be a Human of RMC all you have to do is contact one of the editors and we’ll happily send you the questions and feature you in our next issue!
