“IN THE COMPANY OF ANGELS,” THE PRESTIGIOUS DOLL COLLECTION OF CATHERINE PETERSON OF SOUTH CAROLINA

rom her earliest days in forty years of doll collecting, Catherine Peterson sought the obscure and often unknown in the history of dolls. Dolls carved of wood abound, sometimes in the very home of the carver and other times in small commercial workshops, ranging from rare Oberammergau treasures to very rare treasures from the Vermont workshop of Joel Ellis. Other dolls, from this collection of 350 dolls, include early porcelain dolls, some with rare wooden articulated bodies, others with rare coiffures, and all with wonderful original costumes. There are treasures made of paper-mache with rare coiffures, early cloth dolls and examples made of rare experimental materials such as rubber. Notable in the collection are the original costumes, extremely rare to find on these early models. More than ten dolls have extensive original trousseaux included. A frequently heard phrase from Catherine to other collectors was “But did you notice the…?” as she

would go on to relate special features about one of her dolls that they were admiring. It might be a detail of the sculpted coiffure, a hidden stitching of the body, a unique costume feature, or even a hidden signature. With as eagle eye for these often-overlooked details, their special value points, she sought and captured fascinating dolls. They are all available to collectors now in this wonderful collection. or Ann Lloyd, the notable Pennsylvania doll connoisseur, it was always the face she first sought in her choice of a doll, and her collection bears witness to that. There are dolls with expressions that span from merriment to solemnity, faces that range from those of youngest childhood to those with beautiful age lines of the elderly, and dolls with complexions that are inclusive of every culture. Hers is truly an apt portrayal of human experience. The collection of more than 300 rare bisque dolls visually relates this, highlighted by rarities from French and German firms of the golden years of dollmaking, 1875-1925. Yet not only are the dolls compelling for their expression, but also for their rarity and for the originality of their presentation. With a keen eye for those models

“THE AMERICAN DOLL, 1900-1950” — The Ursula Mertz Private Collection

t is curious, yet somehow fitting, that the first comprehensive study of the American doll would be undertaken by a German Immigrant to America. After all, it was a French man, Alexis de Tocqueville who had visited, studied and written about America in the early 1800s that many people consider one of the most insightful historians of American culture. So it is with Ursula Mertz, who arrived in America as a young adult immigrant after WWII, bringing with her memories of her German childhood dolls. Nostalgia overcame her. Deciding to collect some of the dolls that she remembered from this childhood, she soon realized the wish was futile. She could find few German dolls here in American in late 1950s, and those she found she could not afford. Then she discovered the American made doll of the early 1900s. Fascinated by its evolutionary history from earlier German dolls, she enthusiastically turned to this not-yet-blossomed collecting category. As she relates “I wanted to collect dolls, I thought American

doll history was intriguing, and also, these were the only dolls I could afford because no one else wanted them at the time”. So began a serious fifty-year study of the American doll that was shared with collectors in her important two volume work, Collector’s Encyclopedia of American Composition Dolls, 19001950, in innumerable articles in doll journals and as guest lecturer at international doll conventions. Several years ago, Ursula donated a selection of her dolls to the UFDC Doll Museum where they remain one of the museum’s most sought displays. Her extensive collection will be offered in two parts. Part I is scheduled for October 17, 2026, to be followed by Part II on March 6, 2027.
