R. John Wright The Past is the Present

Wh en the German doll historians

Marianne and Jurgen Cieslik wrote their pivotal work on the Steiff company, they were invited by Steiff to visit the company private archives which “had been kept firmly under lock and key for decades”, according to the foreword in the Cieslik book, Button in Ear. Every collector dreams that such a moment could happen for them. A private preserve, unknown to the public, able to be seen.

It is that moment now, with the presentation of the complete previously unknown preserve of R. John Wright dolls, privately held by Susan and John Wright.

Actually, it was knowing of the Steiff archive that had inspired the young couple to maintain their own preserve from the very beginning, nearly a half-century ago. After all, the early Steiff dolls were one of the two major influences in the evolution of the RJW dolls. The other had been the pressed felt character dolls of Lenci who, sadly, John often ruminated, had not been so forethinking in preserving examples. Always the historian as well as artist, R. John and Susan Wright determined to follow the example of Steiff.

Over the 50 years of their work, the company has kept an example of virtually all their work, mostly each documented as the first (#1) of the series, others as prototypes that were later produced with variations, and still others as prototypes never put into production.

Over the 50 years of their work, the company has kept an example of virtually all their work, mostly each documented as the first (#1) of the series, others as prototypes that were later produced with variations, and still others as prototypes never put into production. It is extraordinary for the doll historian or student to view the dolls sequentially, as evident is not only an evolution of technique and style, but also a continuous thread of style and theme. From early on, children, character folk and well-known story book characters were dominant in their work, and then, as their work became more known, they were sought by license holders of cultural icons to create works of their property. There were Disney characters ranging from Mickey and Minnie to Snow White to Cinderella, there was Kewpie, there was Raggedy Ann, the Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan and so many more. And always, there was insistence on excellence. The materials to be of the finest, not always so available to a small studio firm. The costume had to be just so; if one style of button wasn’t quite right, then a search for another. From the very genesis of an idea, which Susan Wright relates was often John bursting into a room with “I’ve a great idea!” to its step-by-step development including technical development of the body, searching for materials, trial painting of the face until the perfect look was achieved, and much more. Good enough was never good enough, excellence was always required, perfection was the right goal.

A number of original historical concept sketches and ephemera preserved by the Wrights and included in this auction, is testament to that.

Throughout the fifty years of work, R. John and Susan Wright have always understood their place in a historical lineage and always paid homage to those who had come before. There was Kathe Kruse, there was Lenci, there were the cloth doll makers of the German secessionist movement of the 30s and 40s, there were the American studio cloth makers. Paying homage to them all, known for often proclaiming “the past is the present”. R. John and Susan found their own special niche in the long evolution of doll history. x

The Benchmark Years: 1976

1. Very Important “First Doll” Created by R. John Wright on November 11, 1976 with Ephemera

19” (48 cm.) Of yellow flannel softly stuffed with sheepswool stuffing, the doll has stitch-sewn head with center seam face and seamed back pate, along with eye darts, simply-shaped nose and stitched-on ears, black button eyes; the head is stitch-attached to torso in floppy-style manner, with Molly metal-hook jointing at shoulders, and floppy stitch-jointing at hips and knees, stitch-defined toes, fingers and ankles.

The doll was created by R. John Wright on November 11, 1976, and he relates this origin in his personal hand-written notes of the company’s early years which are included with this doll. He writes about deciding to make a doll “to take that plunge was one of the hardest things I’ve even had to do because to be finally putting myself to the test invited the risk of discouragement and defeat”. Then noting that he had always been inspired by Steiff dolls, he added “...working with my wife’s tiny Featherweight sewing machine, I sewed a crude head with a seam down the center of the face out of a piece of old yellow flannel. While sewing the body, the bobbin ran out and I had no idea how to rethread the machine...too excited to stop and try to figure that out, I sewed the rest by hand and stuffed it with some sheep’s wool we had around for spinning. The bald, floppy creature that resulted seems now like an awfully small thing to get excited over...he looked like he might have lived under a rock”. And then he added the magic phrase “while I was making him I was already thinking of how much better the second one would be”. And so the journey, and a life’s work, began. Included with the doll and the hand-written notes of the early years is a color photograph of young R. John Wright with the doll perched on his shoulders, and the wooden chair upon which the doll has lived in the family home from 1976 until this time. $8000/12,000

1. Hand-written notes

Benchmark: 1977

The earliest felt dolls created by R. John and Susan Wright had sewn faces with center facial seam and notably seam-jointed floppy legs, referred to by them as their “Hillbilly” dolls. The dolls were made for a very short period of time and are extraordinarily rare to find.

2. Two Earliest Model Floppy Leg Dolls

18” (46 cm.) Each has felt head with center seam on face lending somewhat of a shape, handpainted simple facial features, applied fleecy grey sheepwool hair and he with beard, stitched-on ears, softly stuffed felt body with stitch-jointing at shoulders, hips and knees in very loose manner allowing “floppy” posing, over-sized mitten hands, and each is wearing original hand-sewn cotton costume and felt hat from the home workshops of Susan and R. John Wright. Very good overall condition, hair is somewhat sparse, some small felt wear on bodies. 1977, the very early models were made only for about a year, and few examples are known to exist. Included with the dolls are two original bills of sale from a craft fair where the dolls were sold; the selling price of each of $14. $1400/1800

The Molded Face Adult

Character Doll

At this time, the earlier center-seam face inspired by Steiff character dolls was abandoned in favor of the molded face dolls. R. John Wright was inspired now by the dolls of the Lenci firm of Italy which had early-on developed the molded face technique. For the next forty five years, the molded face technique became the guiding mechanism in the creation of R. John Wright dolls. The first of the molded face dolls were the series of adult characters with country-style costume.

Benchmark 1982 Exclusives

Just five years since John had unwrapped the little cloth doll from his pocket in 1976, the Wrights were being recognized by well-established doll shops around the country, many of which clamored for dolls which would be exclusive to their shop. Notable among these shops was The Enchanted Doll House and The Toy Shoppe, although specialty gift shops such as Little Switzerland eagerly commissioned Heidi, and some years later the Steiff firm of Germany, whose early dolls had been such a major influence to R. John Wright, commissioned four character children. The exclusives phenomena extended shortly into licensed products as well as dolls created for various conventions and groups. and remained a bulwark of the firm thoughout the decades.

Typewritten notes and thoughts written by R. John Wright in the mid-1980s recalling the previous years and contemplating ideas for the future. Or maybe I should do Rackham’s Peter Pan?...” Included with the paper are hand-drawn concept sketches of Rackham’s Hey Diddle Diddle further indicating this interest which was, however, never pursued. $200/300

From a humble start in the Wright home in Vermont, they would grow to become one of the most revered doll companies in modern times. During this period, they held true to their roots of painstaking design with each doll handmade locally. The fandom of R. John Wright Dolls grew to include exhibits in Japan, special clubs, and even an annual International Convention. On this 50th anniversary of the firm, Susan Wright shares with Theriault’s President Stuart Holbrook, her memories, personal stories, and provides a candid look into the genius of R. John and his designs. As well, she discusses her own personal story in their partnership. R. John passed away in 2025 but Susan beautifully talks of his legacy in doll making being one that will continue for generations to come. Keep up with Stuart at
