About the Collection

rom her earliest days in forty years of doll collecting, Catherine

Peterson sought the obscure and often unknown in the history of dolls. Dolls carved of wood abound, some made in the very home of the carver and other times in small commercial workshops, ranging from rare Oberammergau treasures to very rare treasures from the Vermont workshop of Joel Ellis. Other dolls, from this collection of 350 dolls, include early porcelain dolls, some with rare wooden articulated bodies, others with rare coiffures, and all with wonderful original costumes. There are treasures made of paper mache with rare coiffures, early cloth dolls and examples made of rare experimental materials such as rubber. Notable in the collection are the original costumes, extremely rare to find on these early models. A frequently heard phrase from Catherine to other collectors was “But did you notice the…?” as she would go on to relate special features about one of her dolls that they were admiring. It might be a detail of the sculpted coiffure, a hidden stitching of the body, a unique costume feature, or even a hidden signature. With as eagle eye for these often-overlooked details, their special value points, she sought and captured fascinating dolls. They are all available to collectors now in this wonderful collection. x

Solid domed porcelain head with flatcut neck socket, brown-painted hair shaded away from forehead and behind her fully modeled ears, forming into short rolled curls at the back and held by a gilt-edged white headband, painted blue eyes with red and black upper eyeliner, single stroke brows, tiny closed mouth with pert smile, composition shoulderplate and hips, cloth midriff and upper limbs, porcelain lower arms and legs, painted black boots. Seven porcelain figures depicting bonneted babies with bunting-wrapped bodies, each with hand-painted features and costumes details, including larger doll with elaborately painted bonnet and giltedged bunting which opens to form a miniature sewing necessaire including scissors, thimble, awl and needle case; two with hinged lids for use as perfume bottle; and four with whistle tip. 17. Grodnertal Wooden Christmas Fairy and Ballerinas in Original Costumes 5” (13 cm.) and 6”. Each doll has one-piece carved wooden head and torso, with modeled lady shape of torso, painted facial features, and wooden arms and legs that are jointed at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. Including Christmas Fairy with blonde mohair wig in elaborately braided coiffure, unusual painted ballerina slippers with red ankle ties, and original costume including wire-framed tulle mesh angel wings; and matched pair with black sculpted hair drawn into coiled braid chignon, decoratively painted bodice, blue-painted slippers, mesh skirt with applique gilt flecks and holding a garland of flowers. Carton shoulderhead with elongated slender face and throat, painted facial features, large blue eyes, black upper eyeliner, closed mouth with gentle expression, original brunette human hair over black-painted pate, firm kid/wooden slender lady body, wooden lower arms and legs, painted shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1830. Value Points: early doll with original human hair, especially rare in this small size, wearing original high-waisted gown of hand-printed muslin with matching jacket, high woven bonnet, straw woven purse with flowers and feathers; and with a second original gown. $1800/2300

Each of the furniture pieces is of carton with marbled paper finish and elaborate gilt paper edging and decorations, glass top of cabinet which hinges open to mirrored back and paper-lined candy box, and with two lower drawers each originally designed to hide candy treats. Along with a matching silk cushion covered stool which separates to reveal candy box interior. French, mid-1800s, early luxury boites de bonbons are very rare examples to find. $1600/2300
