These complex underground openings are engineered to support critical infrastructure, including crushers, conveyor transfer stations, muck chutes, concrete batching plants, underground hoist rooms, and specialized facilities such as nuclear storage and research installations. The design and execution of mass excavations demand a sophisticated integration of both lateral and vertical development techniques. To effectively control blast vibration and limit overbreak, programmable drill-and-blast patterns are commonly utilized. Excavation activities are performed using a variety of equipment and methodologies — ranging from jumbos and long‑hole drills to mechanical excavation tools — all carefully selected to suit site‑specific ground conditions. Redpath further employs multi‑level excavation sequencing, incorporating multiple benching and slashing passes to maintain precision, safety, and operational efficiency throughout each stage of the excavation process.

MECHANICAL EXCAVATION SPECIALIST EXPERIENCE in underground mechanical excavation and construction. Beyond its extensive raiseboring and shaft sinking capabilities, including the Shaft Boring Roadheader (SBR), Redpath has successfully applied mechanical excavation techniques to lateral mine development using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and roadheaders.

Key examples include the Grosvenor Mine in Australia, where Redpath excavated the conveyor and transport drifts using an earth pressure balance TBM, the first machine of its kind approved for drift construction in an underground coal mine in Queensland. At the Kestrel Mine, Redpath completed two mine-access drifts using roadheaders with integrated bolting systems, together with in-seam coal development required to support the commencement of longwall mining operations. In shaft sinking, Redpath has also delivered landmark mechanical excavation projects. At Nezhinsky, Redpath Deilmann sunk two freeze shafts using shaft boring machines, each approximately 750 metres deep. At the Woodsmith Project in the UK, Redpath Deilmann is employing SBR technology, further demonstrating the continued advancement of mechanized shaft construction.

Redpath applies cross-sector expertise from civil, tunneling, and metalliferous mining to deliver customized processes for underground civil infrastructure projects. We utilize both conventional drill-and-blast techniques and continuous mining methods, such as roadheaders or tunnel boring machines (TBMs), to construct underground roads, railways, water and sewage tunnels, nuclear repositories, and other storage caverns.

Redpath also applies ground freezing for mine shaft construction as well as civil engineering and tunnel construction, including applications for creating cross-passages between adjacent tunnels and openings for TBMs. This technique can also be used to repair service pipelines. PT FREEPORT GBC AND DMLZ* PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Tembagapura, Indonesia PT Freeport Indonesia remains the longest client relationship in Redpath history, at 40+ years. Redpath has provided a full range of services, contributing to the development of the world’s largest block cave operation — the Grasberg Block Cave — where over 100,000 tonnes are extracted per day. The Redpath team also participated in setting a record in lateral development of 400,000 metres in the last ten years at GBC and DMLZ. Redpath’s services to this project include mass excavation, raiseboring, shaft development and underground construction.

OYU TOLGOI Rio Tinto / Government of Mongolia Gobi Desert, Mongolia Redpath, through a joint venture, is a major contractor at the Oyu Tolgoi Mine, providing a range of services to the project since 2005. Most noteworthy at Oyu Tolgoi is the installation of the world’s largest friction hoist (6.75 m diameter). Sinking shafts 1, 2, and 5 remain Redpath’s most prolific shaft projects, with shaft 2 breaking Redpath’s record of largest shaft by volume with 124,248 m3 of rock removed in 2018. In addition to these milestones, we provide mass excavation, mine construction and mine development services.

Redpath provides decline and lateral development services with a modern fleet, achieving monthly development rates of over ±1,200 m. Ground support, along with load-and-haul services are provided throughout the mine.
The Sandsloot exploration decline spans over 17 km. A hybrid high-speed development approach combines Australian expertise with South African teams, blending global experience with strong local knowledge of regulations, labour, and operating conditions.
Redpath Deilmann applies its excellent track record in mechanized sinking with SBR technology to this project. The scope includes two 1,500 m deep mine shafts and a 320 m deep mineral transport system shaft with lateral development.
Redpath provides detailed engineering for two headframes, shafts, permanent hoists and loadout; and engineering design to support shaft sinking. We are also in charge of preparing shaftrelated equipment.
