Gabriel García Márquez

EL MUNDO LLORA SU MUERTE, Y CELEBRA SU NACIMIENTO A LA INMORTALIDAD

H

Gabriel García Márquez THE WORLD CRIES OVER HIS DEATH AND HIS BIRTH INTO IMMORTALITY [By Bernardo Montoya] projected his tranquility. It was very special for me to have had a chance to see him and to hear his presentation about his books. Meeting him is something that I’ll always remember.” Espejel also mentioned the memorial service for Garcia Marquez that the Mexican government offered at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, one of the most important culture institutions in Mexico. In fact, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos was in attendance to give one last goodbye to the beloved writer, standing by his side along with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto. Peter Hartman, Director of the Reading Program and former Director of the Public Library in Council Bluffs, said that the death of Garcia Marquez “is very sad because he was a prominent figure that suddenly vanished, but, at the same time, it will help to motivate people´s curiosity for his written legacy.” Hartman emphasized that on of Marquez’s peculiarities was magical realism. “This means that we can open one of his books and we’ll find these wonderful stories that can describe an everyday event in the most marvelous way, and vice versa.” Colombian Yuriko Doku, projects coordinator at the Office of Latino/Latin American Studies at the University of Omaha, stated the following: “Gabriel Garcia Marquez is and will always be one of the most influential Latin American writers in the literary universe as the greatest writer of magical realism. His books and ideas will be his greatest legacy for all future generations, books such as ‘Cien Años de Soledad,’ ‘El coronel no tiene quien le escriba,’ and ‘El amor en los tiempos del colera’ to name a few.” Doku added that Marquez’s career was always marked by his commitment to bringing peace to Colombia and social justice to all of Latin America. In fact, one of his most memorable quotes was “I’ve been conspiring towards bringing peace to Colombia almost from the moment when I was born” (El País, 2005). Yuriko added that “Gabo” always defended Latin American unity, and reminded us about a quote given by Garcia Marquez to Newsweek in 1996: “For me, Bolivar’s ideal is fundamental: Bringing unity to Latin America. It’s the only cause I’d be willing to die for.” She also stated the following: “His legacy includes a wide range of literary works and I believe that we must hold, nurture and project his writing into the future.” Thusly, we can only add that today we are left with a very important literary legacy, and that we can at least find comfort in knowing that Gabriel Garcia Marquez died in this world... But has now been reborn into immortality.

ne of the most influential writers of the 20th century has passed away. At 87 years young, Gabriel Garcia Marquez leaves this world behind after fighting against his cancer. A Colombian also known as “Gabo,” Garcia Marquez is one of the most well-known Spanish speaking writers in the world. The winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature for 1982, his many novels and tales allowed millions of readers to experience the passions, superstitions, violence and inequity, found in Latin America. His skills were so prestigious, that even when he was alive he was already acknowledged as the most popular writer in the Spanish language since Miguel de Cervantes. He was even compared to other greats such as Mark Twain and Charles Dickens. About this loss, Colombian Consul Bladimiro Nicolas Cuello Daza, stated in writing from Chicago that even while all of Colombia has been hit by the death of Marquez “As Diplomatic Official for the Republic of Colombia, I send a warm hug to all people who feel the great loss of our beloved Gabo.” According to the Colombian Consul, the work of Garcia Marquez managed to represent a special type of narrative, very different from that of Cervantes for El Quijote. “Even among his vast catalog of work, one of his most important books has managed to stand the test of time: Cien años de soledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude). It will last forever because it’s a novel where pleasure is part of the experience, pleasure and the feeling of adventure while reading it. This is a novel that opens several opportunities for us all, allowing us to value several worlds from a different point of view,” he said. The diplomat has also highlighted how “Gabo” created timeless characters. “I believe that Cien años de soledad is up there with El Quijote, and a century from now all libraries will have this book sitting right next to Cervantes’ masterpiece.” Jorge Ernesto Espejel Monte, Mexican consul in Omaha, emphasized that this was not just a loss for Latinos, but “a loss felt by everyone, which has made most heads of state make a statement about it.” “It hurts Mexicans even more because he [Garcia Marquez] decided to live in Mexico many years ago,” he said. Consul Espejel remembered when he met “Gabo,” at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), during a conference that was part of a series of literary conferences. “He introduced himself and immediately captured the attention of everyone,” said the diplomat, adding: “It was interesting to see how he

Nebraska EXIGE una reforma migratoria Por Liz Codina

H “

“T

here was some immigration reform under Reagan in 1986, but while that created a way for those who were undocumented to sign up for legal status and it massively increased enforcement at the border, it never went back and fixed the underlying laws so they were more modern,” said the Director of Nebraska Appleseed’s Immigrants and Communities Program, Darcy Tromanhauser. Tromanhauser added “that is almost thirty years ago and some parts of our immigration system are even older than that.” “If you were to think of any other basic system like our telephones or technology, hospital systems, roads we wouldn’t just leave them without updating them for thirty years and more,” she said. Tromanhauser pointed out that families are being torn apart and kids are being separated from their parents every single day because the United States has an outdated immigration system. The reality is that families have to live in fear of being deported every day. In fact, she says many studies have concluded that separating children and their parents have several negative impacts on families and we cannot let this keep happening. Many groups in Nebraska have already joined the fight and are calling on Congress to pass commonsense immigration reform. These groups are asking congress to keep families together.

Articles, events, press releases, opinions, and suggestions may be sent to ABM Enterprises, PO BOX 7360, Omaha NE 68107, Fax (402) 934-0709 or E-mail to: eventos@periconewspaper.com

Tromanhauser expressed that “what you can see very clearly in Nebraska is that there has been incredible support and calls for action from Congress,” adding “our representatives can see the consensus that exists in Nebraska from business to state groups, family and children’s groups, health perspectives, civic perspectives, civil rights groups, all of those different perspectives are calling urgently to fix our outdated immigration laws.” Tromanhauser pointed out that the United States cannot afford to delay this issue further and groups in Nebraska realize that and are working urgently to educate the public about immigration issues. “Well more than forty organizations in Nebraska who represent thousands of people held all kinds of events over the past year,” said Tromanhauser. She explained that this very diverse group of organizations includes the League of Women Voters, the Nebraska Restaurant Associations, Nebraska Cattleman and others who are sponsoring events to keep families together, vigils and other events. “This is an issue that has so many diverse perspectives supporting it,” she said. Additionally, Tromanhauser pointed out the Nebraska Legislature is even urging Congress to take action. “The legislature just recently passed a resolution calling on congress to pass commonsense immigration laws,” she said. Tromanhauser indicated that immigration reform is a critical part of the social and economic fabric

of the United States. Our outdated laws are having negative impacts on families, communities, small businesses and the economy.” If the United States were to pass commonsense immigration reform we would help small business and communities across the country. Apart from the moral implications, Tromanhauser explained the reform would be great for the economy of Nebraska and the rest of the United States for several reasons. “The Congressional Budget Office reviewed both the House and Senate bill and showed that reform would drastically reduce the U.S budget deficit, it would have an enormous positive fiscal impact on the United States,” she said. Tromanhauser added that immigrants already pay taxes and contribute enormously to our economy. If we were to ask them to leave it would hurt the economy of the United States tremendously. Tromanhauser pointed out that it is time for action and we cannot wait any further. Congress must pass an update that can “ensure that families can stay together and create a line for people to get in who are here without documents.” The Senate bill was passed almost a year ago and now it is time for the House to take action too. Tromanhauser concluded that “these people are contributing, paying taxes, raising families, they are part of our communities but there is no line for them to get into until we update our laws.”

EL CENTRO DE LAS AMERICAS CONTINUES TO DEVELOP UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYE OF ROGER GARCIA

A

By Marina Rosado

fter a year and a half since assuming the role of Executive Director of El Centro de las Americas, Roger Garcia seems pleased with the achievements that have been reached: “We served more than 7,000 individuals during the previous fiscal year, most of them with Latino roots.” Interviewed at the main building of the Metropolitan Community College at South Omaha, Garcia acknowledged that his work keeps him very busy: “But I love to be in touch with the Latino community of Lincoln, and I also have a great staff full of dedicated people who work every day to improve this agency.” Funded over 30 years ago, El Centro has a wide range of programs which focus on five areas: “Our first focus has to do with classes for adults, where we offer GED classes in Spanish, English classes, computer classes, as well as a tutorial class to help them prepare for their citizenship test. We can also include the services we provide for adolescents by helping them with their homework after school is over.” The second focus of El Centro is health: “We help those who don’t have medical insurance to find a doctor that is willing to see them by charging a lower fee or even by allowing them to pay in installments. Our goal is to cooperate with the whole family so that they can receive the services they need while, at the same time, showing them how they can live a healthier life by changing their eating habits and by exercising.” We must highlight that the third focus for El Centro is on the program for victims of domestic abuse: “We explain to them their options, from finding shelter to securing a restraining order. Our coordinator is a woman with whom they can relate to, and they can trust her by telling their stories

since, in this type of situations, it is very helpful to have someone that will listen to us.” Along with this program, there is a fourth focus that centers on times of crisis: “This is for preventing or helping during a crisis. For example, if a person loses or knows he’s about to lose his job, we take care of locating the resources available to said person, whether that is applying for help from the State government or from other agencies, so that said person can go on, securing basic needs such as food, clothes and things like that, or to help them write their resume so that they can go and search for a job.” The fifth focus of El Centro is known as Golden Warriors: “This is a program for Latino adolescents from 10 to 18 years of age, where we welcome those who are having trouble at school, trouble with their families or for those who already are in the juvenile justice system. We talk to them about respect, about valuing their families and their education.” To work on all tasks contemplated under the five aforementioned areas, El Centro faces the challenges inherent to a non-profit organization: “This is why we’re always seeking government funding, as well as funds from private donors. I also consider I have another challenge to win the trusts of my team and of our clients and contributors in the community, because establishing solid and long-lasting relationships takes time, as does learning what the Latino community in Lincoln really needs.” El Centro de las Americas is part of the Cultural Centers Coalition which, as Garcia explained, “brings together non-profit centers who cooperate to benefit several cultural groups, such as Native Americans, African Americans, Asians, Latinos, and one in particular focuses on refugee communities.” Also, El Centro has a close connection with the Nebraska Latino American Commission, in regard

to everything that has to do with raising awareness for the Latino culture. Even though a large annual fundraising event recently took place on March, El Centro’s community events continue to grow: “Last year we got to celebrate 5 de Mayo for the first time by combining it with the Dia del Niño (Children’s Day), and we then got to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day, and during the holidays we continued to provide families with free gifts.” Even though El Centro, which is located in the State capital, has started to use a brand new location since February, Garcia invited us to talk with him over at Metro in order to share the news about how he’s been part of the Board of Directors for said institution since August 2013: “I’m happy to work in this role, promoting the magnificent services that Metro provides not only for many Latinos, but also for other communities from a wide range of cultures from all over the world. Here we can see students from other countries, and our programs and events showcase the cultural richness of said communities. Metro offers technical careers where people can study to become a welder or mechanic in order to go searching for a job. We have many advantages such as being connected to the public library, as well as having several spaces available for those that need a place to have a meeting or to study.” Whether at Metro or at El Centro de las Americas, Garcia concluded: “It is a privilege and a pleasure to every day serve the community thanks to my job.” Roger Garcia / Executive Director El Centro de las Americas 210 ‘O’ Street, Lincoln, NE 68508 402.474.3950 Roger@elcentro.org

BRIEFS Job Fair The YMCA will be hosting their Camp Counselor Hiring Fair on March 23 from 1-4 p.m. The event will take place at the Downtown YMCA located at 430 South 20th Street. The YMCA is looking for enthusiastic and energetic male and female counselors to work with children of all ages this summer. Assistant Counselors must be 16 years or older and Camp Counselors must be 18 years or older. The mission of the YMCA is to make life changing impacts in the lives of children, adults and families through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. If you are interested in learning more about how you can get involved or if you have any questions please visit www.metromca.org or call 402-341-1600. 127 Low Income Mothers in Nebraska A recent report released by Working Poor Families Project finds that more working mothers in Nebraska have low incomes. In fact, according to the report 38 percent of Nebraska’s low-income families are headed by working mothers. The total number of female-headed working families in Nebraska has increased by four percent over the last five years. According to Nebraska Appleseed there are several factors that keep working mothers in poverty and these issues can be addressed at the state level because “state governments have significant authority and opportunity to help low-income working mothers gain the education and work skills they need to provide for their children and strive to become economically secure.” Appleseed indicates Nebraska is already taking the initiative to provide better educational opportunities to these women but more can be done. 137 Legal Consultation Justice for Our Neighbors Nebraska (JFONNE) is now offering legal consultations every Wednesday from 3:30-5 p.m. at Latino Center of the Midlands located at 4821 South 24th Street. If you would like to schedule a consultation or need to speak to a JFON attorney about your immigration status please call 402-733-2720.
