“ “ VOTEN SI Activistas locales instan que residentes

“

“ “ VOTE YES Local Activists Urge Residents to

“

IN UPCOMING FREMONT SPECIAL ELECTION

[By Liz Codina]

A ‘yes’ vote fixes the parts of Fremont’s ordinance that are not working for our community,” said Virginia Meyer, a local Fremont activist from the organization Fremont Yes!. Meyer and fellow colleagues are just some of the many residents that are concerned about the special election to be held in Fremont on February 11. Fremont residents have been given the opportunity to vote on the housing provisions of Ordinance 5165 – intended to discourage undocumented immigrants from renting by requiring all renters to pay a fee and get a license from the police. “If we fix the ordinance, we don’t have to worry about risking entering into costly legal fights or having to go through an annoying and burdensome process of getting a license and paying a fee every time we move to a new rental,” indicated Meyer. By taking the time to cast a ‘yes’ ballot in the special election, Meyer and fellow colleague Krista Anderson believe the City of Fremont and its residents will avoid facing costly legal battles that could take a toll on the people of Fremont. Anderson points out that other towns that have attempted to enact similar laws are now footing the bill, into the millions of dollars, because of legal issues. “You will find those

ordinances were deemed unconstitutional,” said Anderson and are being challenged in court. “We’ve seen how a similar ordinance in Farmers Branch, Texas cost their city millions in legal fees and increased Farmers Branch residents’ property taxes,” added Meyer. Meyer, who just purchased a home in Fremont worries that if residents do not vote ‘yes’ and the housing provisions of Ordinance 5165 are allowed to go into effect, the City of Fremont will be challenged in court and this might lead to increased property taxes in Fremont. “With our mortgage, kids, cars, etc, our budget is fairly tight,” said Meyer, adding “I don’t want my property taxes to increase so our city can defend an ordinance that is ineffective, burdensome and gives Fremont a bad name.” Increased property taxes could create financial strain for the families residing in Fremont. Homeowners aren’t the only ones that could be affected if the housing provisions of Ordinance 5165 go into effect. “There is still a common misunderstanding about this ordinance,” pointed out Anderson. “It applies to anyone who rents in

Fremont. This includes seniors, college students, young families, people in transition who are waiting to buy or build a home.” Although the intent of the ordinance is to discourage undocumented immigrants from renting in Fremont, the ordinance itself does not require proof of citizenship or legal status to obtain an occupancy permit to rent in Fremont. Ultimately, the housing provisions of this ordinance “create an additional obstacle for renters in Fremont,” mentioned Anderson. The two activists point out that a ‘yes’ vote will help the residents of Fremont avoid a tedious process. “If enforced, the housing portions of the ordinance requires everyone that wishes to rent a house or apartment to pay a five dollar fee for every person in the home over eighteen and get a license from the police station,” clarified Meyer. “If enforced, it will be a hardship for people in our community,” said Meyer. “I don’t like that idea that renters have to register at the police department. It’s partly because of the fee, partly because of the inconvenience, but mostly because of the intrusion into a person’s private living circumstances,” pointed out Anderson.

For these reasons both women strongly encourage the residents of Fremont to read the ordinance itself and look at the flow chart the City of Fremont has provided so they can gain a better understanding of the legislation. Meyer and Anderson aren’t the only ones encouraging residents to vote ‘yes’ on February 11. “Our Chamber of commerce, our local economic development group called the Greater Fremont Development Council, the owners of several assisted living and nursing facilities in Fremont, our mayor and a handful of Fremont City Council members,” support a ‘yes’ vote said Meyer. She added that even the Fremont Area Young Professional group is taking steps to encourage residents to vote ‘yes’ so Fremont doesn’t become a city with a bad reputation. This vote is an opportunity for us to change the direction of our community. We urge people to read the facts on this ordinance. We know there are many people still undecided. It has been a very heated debate, but I hope people can see that we truly want what will be best for our community as a whole, in the long-term,” concluded Anderson.

NUEVO

DIRECTOR EJECUTIVO EN

MLCDC

H

NEW

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

MLCDC

AT THE

SIMON ROMERO IS NOW TASKED WITH MAINTAINING AND IMPROVING THE BENEFITS OF SAID ORGANIZATION

O

By Bernardo Montoya

ver 12 years ago, a private institution was created in Omaha, an organization that wanted to support the development of Latinos in the central region of the United States, immediately highlighting their warm demeanor. This allowed a community which was searching for such a service to feel at home, surrounded by family and friends, thanks to an institution with a goal for helping them with their education so that they could reach the American Dream of having their own business (or making their current business thrive). The entity we speak of is the Midlands Latino Community Development Center (MLCDC), an organization with a path full of new expectations after naming a new Executive Director in Simon Romero, Colombian by birth. “The decision to take this job was a hard one,” said Romero, adding: “it meant taking care of a whole project with a very important history in the City… But I figured it was an interesting challenge for running a company which opened its arms a few months after I arrived in the United States for volunteer work, which in the end made me accept the proposal of Marta Sonia LondoñoMejia, founder and up until that moment Executive Director of the MLCDC.” Romero has an academic profile that makes us think he’ll have great success at his new job: He has a Bachelor’s in Public Administration, as well as a specialty in the same area. He has worked in both the public and private sectors. He’s been a business owner, an officer at a municipality in Colombia, and recently he worked as Principal for a Colombian University. However, Romero’s biggest challenge might be the need to connect and bond with the society and the local unions in order to lure in more benefits for the MLCDC, especially since it was a great strategy that helped Londoño-Mejia to consolidate the planned vision and mission for said organization.

08 EL PERICO | LOCAL STORY

This is even more interesting because Romero has been in the United States for 13 months and has been linked to the MLCDC for around 10 months or so. Luckily, he has the support of a great team that has welcomed him as was expected from such an institution: as part of the family and with the professionalism that Romero needs to bring in more resources, staff, volunteers and members for the organization under his care. For now, one of the biggest tests that he managed to pass was that a lot of people assumed that once Londoño-Mejia was gone some of the students would leave as well, something that didn’t happen. “As an institution, we continue on the same path as before because people continue to come here and they’re even bringing more people,” said Romero. We must mention that Marta Sonia is not leaving the MLCDC. “She is now part of the Board, and from there she will continue to work for our community and our institution.” Currently the MLCDC reports they’ve received 180 students for their Business and Day Care programs, a number they plan to beat in 2014. According to Romero, the Day Care program has been a huge success, and it will only continue becoming stronger thanks to the social benefits it provides since those who have been trained in this program can operate efficient businesses for the education and care of children. “We also seek that the contractor program continues to help people secure better and bigger contracts in a responsible and professional way. And the training and microcredits program will receive special attention since, the more things that people know about how to make their business grow properly so that they can receive the help of a microcredit, the more it will help with the economic development of the city,” he emphasized. He also said that the Housing project will be of the outmost importance for providing solutions for

| Del 6 al 12 de Febrero, 2014.

the housing situation “when the American Dream of owning a house finally becomes a reality,” he said. The MLCDC has several more projects in education, culture and social integration that don’t only include Omaha. We got a glimpse at the innovation at hand in this institution since they have a database that Latino families can check to see where to go when they’re in need of a social service, and this can be checked for Bellevue, Boys Town, Carter Lake, Council Bluffs, Des Moines, Holbrook, Lincoln, Offutt AFB, Omaha, Papillion and Valley. We must mention that because of all of this, the Mayor’s Office in Omaha has highlighted the MLCDC’s work for creating more jobs and helping with the community’s education. The Mexican Consulate sees the organization as a partner and friend, working to secure more and better services for the Latino population. The Police Department places a lot of trust on the MLCDC since they’ve worked with the organization on several education projects as well as on events to improve social connections. The professionals who impart the workshops at the MLCDC highlight how great it is to work with an organization that “makes people feel as if we were all really one big family, and this makes it easier to learn,” said Rhonda Case, member of the Provider’s Network, certified by the State of Nebraska for imparting classes about securing a Day Care License. All in all, the 2,500 square feet of space available to the MLCDC have a huge impact on the community, providing them with great opportunities to improve their situation. And now, this institution has a new leader that will continue to work hard in order to give everyone an even better 2014. “...I only want to ask all the friends of the MLCDC that they continue supporting us so that I can bring them great results during my work here. I’m open to working as a team so that I can use my knowledge and skills for the benefit of our community, a community we are honored to serve thanks to this prestigious institution,” said Romero.

Dra.

silvia Dra.

Rodriguez Vargas

outstanding academic at Brownell-Talbot [by Marina Rosado]

F

ounded on September 17, 1863, the Brownell-Talbot School is currently in charge of Dr. Sylvia Rodriguez Vargas, an outstanding and enthusiastic Latina. The daughter of Puerto Rican parents, Rodriguez was born and raised in New York: “I always studied in public schools and things didn’t change until College when my sister was given a scholarship to study at a boarding school, and this allowed me to learn more about private schools and their system. Their reach was very interesting to me because this type of institution constitutes only about 1% of all schools in the United States, but their contribution is significant.” On her second year as Principal at Brownell-Talbot, Rodriguez remembered her first impression after visiting Omaha back in 2011: “I was here for three days, interviewing the administrative staff and talking to some of the teachers, as well as with students and their families. I was honestly marveled by the diversity in our school where 30% of all students are not Caucasian, something I did not see at any other of the places where I worked. That is why I did not hesitate to consider that being a part of a school with such a strong history would be a great experience, thanks to its strong foundation and strong commitment to the community for the last 150 years. If we think about it, this means that Brownell-Talbot started to educate girls for their role in society… during a time when women’s right to vote didn’t even exist! I’m very happy about having such an opportunity because this is a place where I can see myself as an academic leader, and from where I will seek more opportunities for significantly contributing to the growth of our community.” Brownell-Talbot provides education for groups from pre-school up to twelfth grade: “This means that children can study with us as soon as they’re three years old, and when they finish their education they are ready to continue at a higher education institution because 100% of the students that complete their studies with us end up going to College. Right from the start, their education is designed so that they can learn with a passion, in order for them to fully develop their minds, allowing them to be responsible while

always acting as honest and outstanding individuals. We offer an education for life itself, something that goes beyond our classrooms.” Rodriguez has a lot of experience as the head of several educational institutions such as Saint Mary School in Raleigh, North Carolina, and at others in Ohio. Her dedication and love for teaching go back to when she was a student at Binghamton University where she got her Bachelor’s in Spanish Lan-

guage and Literature as well as another one for Latin American and Caribbean Studies: “While I was in College I had the opportunity to teach Spanish classes and I loved being able to teach and work with students. It was a very enriching experience, to be able to show other people my language, culture and Latino roots, trying to break some of the stereotypes that still exist to this day.” Even though she is very young, Dr. Rodriguez has a very impressive curriculum vitae with two Master’s Degrees (one in Art and another one in Education), as well as a PhD in Philosophy, Education Policy and Leadership from Ohio State University: “I’m the first one in my family to reach such an achievement, which is in part why I believe so much in the power of education. This is why it is my top priority that our students are ready for anything since many of them will take our principles far beyond Nebraska. We currently provide our services to 50 Zip Codes that include homes not only in Omaha, but also in Bellevue, Papillion, Lincoln, and even at Iowa.” With several great decisions, as is the case for implementing technological tools such as tablets for every student from 5th to 8th grade, as well as laptops for those from 9th to 12th grade, Rodriguez said: “We want to be elite, yes, but only on academics. That is why I would like for parents to visits us because we know they only want the best for their kids, and we are focused on developing the full potential and leadership skills of our students.” “Leadership for serving others, for community service, is the center of the privilege of private education. Therefore, our future leaders will represent the beautiful diversity in Omaha, with talent, innovation and uniqueness,” said Dr. Rodriguez..

BRIEFS Citizen Board Created by Executive Order

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert recently issued an executive order creating the Citizen Complaint Review Board. According to the Mayor’s office the new board will review complaints against Omaha police officers. “When a citizen believes there has been misconduct, this is an opportunity for further review,” said Stothert. The Citizen Complaint Review Board will consist of five members. Stothert will appoint one board member from each police precinct area and one at large. The board will be tasked with identifying areas of concern when a complaint is issued against an officer. Stothert made it clear that the members of this board will not be decision or policy makers for the city of Omaha and their finding will be confidential. If you are interested in being considered for a position on this board please visit the Mayor’s website to submit an application. President Obama’s Weekly Address

President Obama’s address on February 1 focused on restoring opportunities for all Americans. “Inequality has deepened,” said Obama, adding “too many Americans are working harder and harder just to get by and too many still aren’t working at all.” Obama pointed out that it is the job of the nation to reverse both of these trends so opportunities can be restored across the United States. Obama mentioned plans of a four part agenda that will increase opportunities in America. The first part of Obama’s plan will revolve around the creation of new jobs in construction, manufacturing, and energy. The second portion of the President’s plan will be to focus on training Americans with the skills they need in order to obtain new jobs. Next, Obama’s plan will focus on making sure children in the United States have access to quality education from early childhood through college. Last, Obama pointed out that he will make sure hard work gets paid with decent wages. “These ideas will strengthen the middle class and help more people work their way into the middle class,” concluded Obama.
