“
I have a special baby because God wanted to give him a huge heart and wonderful eyes that tell me what is going on. My son has Down syndrome, but to me and my family that does not mean we can’t enjoy our moments together. Sure, understand his disability was hard at first to, but today I am happy and thankful to God for giving me the challenge of being a mother to this beautiful boy who is now enjoying Christmas at this yearly event.” Those were the words of Maria Juarez, one of the 250 people in attendance at the event organized by M.O.R.E. (Minority Outreach Resource Education), a non-profit organization that, since 2003, has been helping and educating low income families who have a child or a young person with special needs or with some type of disability. Santa Claus arrived from the North Pole right on schedule, brightening the day of all the special angels gathered for this extraordinary day, as well as to be with the families that had a great time thanks to this special guest. For the 2,300 families registered with M.O.R.E., this had been one of the days they’d been expecting for long, not only thanks to the great holiday celebration itself but also because it was a vital tool to get the little ones to interact, thus allowing them to learn how to socialize and mingle. Everyone in attendance agreed that this type of community event is very good for the little ones with special needs, as well as for those that do not have a disability, for parents, therapists and volunteers who work closely with the organization. “As parents, it is very educational and emotionally important that we can relate to other families and feel that we all belong to the same group of friends...,” said Ana Diaz, mother of a kid with autism. On that note, therapist Mila Curtis, from UNMC, said “by participating in social events such as the one by M.O.R.E., all children with a disability receive a good bump to their self-esteem and confidence, and it teaches everyone else how to respect these children, making said people more supportive of them, and it definitely helps them grow as a person.” Pat Davis, founder and Chairman for the organization, was pleased with the number of volunteers, sponsors, family members, partners and friends who were part of this Christmas event that took place in the TAC building for public schools of Omaha. She also duly mentioned that this event is now on its sixth consecutive year. It must be said that M.O.R.E. is a non-profit organization that was started by Pat Davis when she was faced with having to seek the proper resources and education for her grandson who had a disability. Ever since then, she has worked to achieve her mission: To establish a network of agencies at the North and South parts of the city in order to teach
nations from private companies. An event such as the one for this year is a reality thanks to the help of families, friends and companies that want to help on the topic of disabilities. Because of it, during this year’s activities an award was presented to La Esmeralda store
OFELIA ROBLES, Southeast Precinct of the Police Department
which has donated candies for the little ones in more than one occasion. Radio Lobo 97.7 FM also received an award for their support in spreading the word on all activities for M.O.R.E., which has helped raise awareness among Latino families in Omaha so that they know of the great work of this organization and about how they can help. “60 percent of our clients are Latinos, and they have been able to learn more about our organization thanks to Radio Lobo, which means that our information is out there, thus allowing families to be informed on the topic, and perhaps they will end up coming to us so that we can work together to improve the lives of the little ones,” said Davis. This year, the Police Department of the Southeast Precinct made an important donation of toys for the children, which helped increase the total number of gifts that were given to all kids at the event. For all the parents which had experience the events from previous years, it was great to see how more people got involved for this new edition, which means that more people are open to learning about disabilities and the resources available for those in this situation. “Sadly, there are still some homes that hide their disabled kids, as well as those that don’t know what to do with them or how to help them. We seek to let them know that having a special kid at home is a blessing because it can be channeled into an opportunity to discover new skills and abilities in all family members,” said Davis. Barb Farho, Assistant for the Mayor’s Office, was also at the event. She said that Omaha does acknowledge, values and support this type of family, mentioning that Mayor Jean Stothert is aware of the importance of having them as part of their city, especially since we can learn a lot from them to overcome our own problems and become better human beings. At the end of the event, directors, volunteers and members for M.O.R.E. all agreed that this Christmas event allowed everyone who has a disabled person in their life to learn about the useful tools at their disposal, in order to give disabled people a better treatment while acknowledging their independence. As for all the special kids and young ones at the event, it was an activity that allowed them to improve their quality of life by promoting their self-determination. “For us, the look on these little angels’ faces during our Christmas activity is priceless. Their smiles, their joy, their every movement motivates us to continue working with M.O.R.E., and we can all help to build an encouraging outlook for them so that they can fully develop their personal fulfillment,” concluded Davis, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy

“
Education is fundamental, and without it we can’t play our part in society,” said Dr. Juan Andrade Jr., President of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, during the Heartland Latino Leadership Conference (HLLC). Dr. Andrade expressed his satisfaction upon returning to Omaha to support the Hispanic community, which continues to grow and inspire the development of new generations: “Because the most important thing in our society is to invest in the young.” The Hispanic leader, who has received several noteworthy awards nationwide, was in charge of inaugurating the program on Friday, and the event got started with a small ceremony to honor the flag along with the presentation of the Children’s Choir of Marrs Middle School. During his speech, Andrade shared his admiration for local leaders such as Bob Campos, as well as for the role of Hispanic women in the community, which earned him an honest and sincere round of applause from the audience. Although he recognized that the challenges faced nationwide aren’t easy, he was still optimistic “because every day more and more Hispanic leaders are taking important positions in the world of politics, culture and entertainment.” For Dr. Andrade, a great leader must have a fundamental quality that is even reflected in the Bible: “It must be a person that shows compassion towards the community.” Andrade went on to say that a leader achieves greatness by becoming “a person at the service of others.” Quoting the legacy of great leaders like Cesar Chavez, Dr. Andrade spoke about uniting for one mis-
sion, one belief and one message: “But leading together does not mean becoming a mess.” With a standing ovation, everyone in attendance at HLLC 2013 said farewell to Dr. Andrade, who also approves of Immigration Reform, “in order to establish true justice in the United States, and so that this country can once again treat everyone with dignity and respect as they deserve.”
After this, and while several companies exhibited their services at the College Fair, the first round of workshops started with Pearl Arredondo, Jon Pearson, Carlos Ojeda Jr. and Shayla Rivera. Rivera gave a talk called “The Importance of One,” where she emphasized “it only takes one person to start to make a difference in our community, but said human
being must retain its individuality, because there is nothing worse than marching to someone else’s beat.” Rivera left her native Puerto Rico when she was 17 to live in Texas and become an awareness expert “because I was feeling alienated by the language and cultural barrier.” After working at NASA for years, Rivera started as a salesman while, at the same time, she discovered her gift as a comedian, even having a chance to motivate the troops while making them laugh. “Start by wondering why you do this or that all the time,” said Rivera, “because we all believe we know how things are supposed to be done, but the real value is in knowing we can make changes to our lives and set aside the thoughts at the back of our head which were used to program us since we were little, and which are keeping us from growing.” After all morning workshops concluded it was time for the Scholarships Luncheon. In 2013, the HLLC received about 150 applications, and after a careful selection process, 16 scholarships were presented to students. The high school students that received a scholarship are Noemi Arias Saldaña (Crete High School), Icel Davila and Yahaira Gonzalez (both from Omaha South High School), Dayana Lopez (Omaha Central High School), Misael Lopez (West Point Central Catholic School), Stacy Marquez (Bryan High School), Michael Peña (Millard North), Jonathan Perez Ramirez (Ralston High School), Selena Stack (Benson High School), Melanie Velez (Millard West High School) and Veronica Villalobos (Madison Public High School). The College students that received a scholarship were Selma De Anda and Victor Romero (both from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln), Mitzi Infante Magaña (College of Saint Mary), Freddy Orrella (University of Nebraska Medical Center) and Valerie around 4,177 students in total.”

WORD-OF-MOUTH JOINT CRANKS OUT THE

AND OTHER MEXICAN STAPLES

[by Leo Adam Biga]
am’s Leon Mexican Foods and Tortilleria is one of this word-of-mouth joints that doesn’t really advertise. This combination dine-in and take-out restaurant, catering service and tortilla factory at 5014 South 20th Street has churned out Mexican staples for decades. It’s just a block south of another little known spot for honest, no-frills, not exactly authentic Mexican fare, the American GI Forum. Nestled among bungalow residences, Sam’s brightly colored awning sets it apart. It’s been through several owners and according to present proprietors David and Araseli Murillo, who bought the place in 2008, the unusual name belongs to the man who opened it, Sam Rocha, and his partner, Leon. The Murillos juggle the business among several pursuits. David, who’s worked construction and did extensive renovations to Sam’s after acquiring it, maintains rental properties. Araseli works as an ESL (English as Second Language) liaison at Omaha Bryan High School. They have three daughters. Araseli says with all they have going on it’s a challenge “making sure everything is being done the right way and we’re selling a good product,” adding, “We’re really busy people, but we’re hard working people.” Growing up in South Omaha the former Araseli Valadez says Sam’s was a well-known landmark for its prodigious tortilla manufacturing

operation. Both her mother and an aunt worked there making the ubiquitous flatbread. Her husband estimates between 35,000 to 40,000 corn tortillas are made there weekly. For a long time Sam’s stood out as a Mexican ethnic food oasis in what used to be a gringo-centric neighborhood starved of such offerings. Araseli says her folks tell her that until Sam’s came along “there was nowhere in Omaha to get tortillas and jalapenos and anything that was Mexican.” Her immigrant parents not only couldn’t find good Mexican food locally but they were afraid for their family to publicly express their heritage. “We were even told, Don’t speak Spanish. because La Migra (immigration police) could be around.” The Latino boon that’s transformed South Omaha the last 25 years has meant an explosion of Mexican heritage pride and south of the border-themed food outlets. “It’s exciting. When we were growing up there weren’t many Mexican businesses.” Many of those businesses are restaurants, food trucks, grocery stores, bakeries. “There is a lot of competition which is OK. We’re not afraid of competition.” She and her husband had zero food business experience and no previous interest in venturing into the industry but David Murillo was friends with the last owner, who was looking to sell after some lean

years. Murillo and his friend were both from the same small village in the Southern Mexican state of Jalisco. Before they knew it the Murillos found themselves newbies in the food game. Afaftera rough start that coincided with the world’s economic collapse, they’ve turned things around. It helped, Araseli says, that her husband “is a pretty good cook” who “likes to make a lot of the traditional dishes where he’s from.” He’s since turned over the cooking to others. The couple has kept most of Sam’s original menu items and recipes, including its populate tamales featuring a spiced masa. They’ve expanded the menu, adding tacos, tortas, quesadillas, et cetera. They’ve also expanded the hours. Unusual for a small, family-owned place, it’s open every day of the week. Araseli says the addition of two food trucks they purchased in 2009, complete with established routes serving area meat processing plants, has made a difference. The business the trucks do, combined with the tortilla, salsa, chips, rice and beans that Sam’s makes and distributes to area restaurants and grocery stores, plus the restaurant’s walk-in traffic, provides a diversified revenue stream. “That’s what really keeps the business going.” Still, managing a food business was the furthest thing from her mind. “We just took a chance. We decided this was a good opportunity to do something with a business
that had already been established and had a lot of older customers who’ve been coming here since they were little. We thought we could pick it up and do something better with it. “Something unplanned sometimes turns out better than something you plan.” There was much to learn and do. Everybody in the family did their part. “We did a lot of work to this place. It was falling down when we bought it. It’s a family business, so we all help each other out. When we first bought it nobody was getting paid. We all had to pitch in to bring up the business.” Sam’s features bargain prices and items sold in bulk. You can get filled up for $5. Even the combos are well under $10. You can go home with a dozen tamales or most anything else, including family-size containers of salsa and rice and beans. She says Sam’s can keep prices low because it prepares so much in quantity and its few employees are mostly family. A daughter, a nephew and Araseli’s in-laws all work there.

Visas U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently announced the approval of 10,000 petitions for U-1 nonimmigrant status (U visas) for fiscal year 2014. According to USCIS this “marks the fifth straight year that USCIS has reached the statutory maximum since it began issuing U visas in 2008.” Victims who have suffered substantial physical and mental abuse can qualify for U visas. Originally, Congress implemented the U visa program to “strengthen the law enforcement community’s ability to investigate and prosecute cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other crimes, while also offering protection to victims,” according to USCIS. Although USCIS has reached the 10,000 cap the office will continue to review applications and will notify eligible applicants if they will be put on a waiting status to receive a visa when they become available again.

itting on the roof of his house at the Cibuco Barrio, Jose Gamaliel Crespo-Rosado used to watch the sunsets at Corozal, his home town in Puerto Rico: “I loved to watch the colorful sky, how it changed from orange to pink, and from pink to purple. I’m a landscape painter, and nature inspires me because I come from the countryside, from being surrounded by these wonderful green areas, and I also like animals. Maybe that’s why I capture it in my paintings because I miss my home and my culture.” Gamaliel Crespo discovered his draw towards painting when he was in first grade: “I was asked to explain how plants grow so I picked a china tree and drew the whole process, from the seeds to becoming a tree.” It helped Gamaliel Crespo win first place, and more awards would follow, such as the one he got for doing the portrait of Eugenio Maria de Hostos, a famous Puerto Rican educator, or when did one of a Nativity Scene for a nationwide contest. After so many achievements, Gamaliel Crespo continued studying: “But, to be honest, I consider myself more of an artisan than an artist since at Puerto Rico I specialized on working at the carnivals by using all kinds of materials for my cre-

ations. I really like to paint over leather and wood, which is why I made a lot of leather bracelets, screens and anything I could think of. It wasn’t until I discovered canvas that I felt comfortable with painting with acrylics, pencils and chalk, but I’m still exploring other materials.” This 32 year old man currently works at the Kroc Center of the Salvation Army: “Since about a month ago I am the Education and Art Assistant, and I’m lucky enough to work on art classes for children. I’m very thankful for being able to work with Gina Ponce (Education and Art Manager at the Kroc) because she’s been like an angel in my life!” The young artist arrived at the United States 6 years ago, and he settled in Kansas along with his older brother. “While there, my boss asked me to paint some murals for his business, and he liked them so much that he hired create more at his restaurant in Omaha, which is why I ended up painting the murals at Cilantro’s (114 and Dodge Street), and that’s when I met Gina.” Thanks to her support, Gamaliel Crespo is letting himself be known in our community thanks to an expo at the Heartland Latino Leadership Conference, where one of his paintings was auctioned:

“I just had a presentation at an event for the Hispano Chamber of Commerce in Nebraska, with Budweiser. So I feel very excited because my work was well received and because I have just sold some paintings for the new offices for Boys Town.” As a father of two (Camila and Gamaliel), the artist is happy for being able to lead other kids in the world of painting: “Sure, it’s a challenge, but I really never took any classes. What I have is my God given talent, which I want to share. My method is very simple since it’s based on the use of light and shadows. What matters is that kids get a chance to express themselves while they develop their intelligence and skills.” “My dream is to build an artistic community at Omaha,” concluded Gamaliel Crespo as we left his studio, where a gingerbread house was waiting for some final touches before the Christmas celebrations. Biden on Immigration During a recent forum dealing with immigration in the United States, Vice President Biden indicated “immigration is all about what has built America.” Biden went on to state that “at its core we are a nation of immigrants,” and “there are 11 million people who are in a sense already Americans because they have already adopted the values, they have already adopted the views of what it constitutes to be an American.” Biden pointed out that the time has come to take these people out of the shadows through a rational policy to give immigrants a fair opportunity to gain their citizenship. The Vice President made it clear that focusing on comprehensive immigration reform will allow the United States to benefit in several ways, not only will it save the U.S billions of dollars, programs such as Social Security will get stronger because more people will be paying into the system. Workshops Justice for Our Neighbors Nebraska (JFONNE) provides educational workshops to service providers, churches and communities interested in working with the immigrant community in the state. The local non-profit aims to provide immigrants with high quality immigration legal services, advocate for immigrant rights and educate the public. Any organization interested in hosting a JFON-NE presentation is welcome to contact Executive Director Emiliano Lerda at 402-898-1349.
