POLICE OFFICERS
Santa Claus at the Southeast Precinct”

“
anta Claus arrived at South Omaha riding his sleigh, as the special guest of the Police Department, to the biggest Christmas event with the largest crowd in the area, and the widest social reach. This event is called “Santa Claus at the Southeast Precinct,” and for the past 12 years it has gathered the community in South Omaha so that they can mingle with Police Officers in a great Christmas setting filled with gifts, games, exhibitions, traditional cuisine, song and dance, as well as a lot of information on safety, to name a few. To be at this event is quite an experience, and it allows everyone to feel the Christmas spirit at every turn, over the more than 15 thousand square feet inside of South High School, a setting fully decorated for the occasion. “The event goes on for about 4 hours, but it requires over 150 work hours of a full team of volunteers with over 150 people,” said Ofelia Robles, Crime Prevention Specialist at the Southeast Precinct, who was also in charge of the first event back in 1999. “Ever since I started this activity, the mission was clear for celebrating Christmas with the community, but what we really wanted to achieve was creating a space where families and the Police Officers of the Southeast Precinct could get together to create bonds between them, allowing us to trust them in guaranteeing the safety of our neighborhood,” she said. “Basically, I think that this is a way of making people see Police Officers not as their enemies, or as people who are ‘distant.’ By coming to the event we can feel comfortable when we need to ask for Police aid or for having a Police Car close to our home, which should be seen as being safe and protected,” said the specialist. However, after 12 years of running this event, there has been no way of telling if the goal set for it is within reach. The expert states that they have indeed received a larger number of people coming to the offices of the Southeast Precinct to request a service, but this could also be attributed to the normal growth for the metropolitan area. The Southeast Precinct is one of 4 service centers in the city of Omaha. It has been reported as one of the centers with the most activity and the metropolitan area, extends from the river to 24th street and from Harrison Street to Dodge Street. “Our job as cops is very broad, and it takes into consideration all kinds of strategies that allow us to uphold the order as well as to create a good relationship between neighbors and the police, on top of being able to provide families with the information and training required so they can protect themselves at home, at work, at school, or even while on the streets or at public spaces. Because of that, this event is a vital tool for our community,” stressed Robles. According to the final report, this time the event had over 1,100 people and, as has been a tradition for years, all children 3 to 9 years of age received a present. Around 800 toys, valued at over $10,000, were distributed among all kids. Most of them were obtained thanks to the generous donations of some of the participants of the “Toy Dance” (Baile del Juguete)
6
organized by Eric Perez, who was also helped by 16 musical groups that participated at said event. Without this, it would be almost impossible to provide a gift to each of these kids. But the help from said dance only covers part of the costs since the whole event has a cost of over $25,000. “My job is to secure all donations, as well as the voluntary work of companies, schools, families, friends, and of the community as a whole,” explained the specialist. It is a big surprise that the event has not managed to secure financial support from any federal fund or from another monetary aid fund from one of the many groups that usually allocate funds to activities that benefit the Omaha community. Several requests have been made both for private and public funds with no luck, which is why Robles must continue seeking funds in the usual way, hoping that one day they can secure a grant that will allow them to cast a wider net over the community. It must be said that all of the more than 20 police officers that were present at the event did so as volunteer, thus being able to help any of the families at the event in case they are needed. Captain Kathy Belcastro from the Southeast Precinct has stated the importance of changing the neg-

ative stigma over police officers, which is why she supports the work of Robles and also participates during said activities. For a second year in a row, the Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation (MLCDC) helped to coordinate part of the activities for the event, including inviting several exhibitors from other countries so that they could give everyone a little taste of their culture during this Christmas event. MLCDC had already worked on an event called “Christmas Around The World” in order to create a space where everyone could gather as a community to share their cultural diversity. However, in 2012 they decided to work together with the Police Department while aiming for the same goal in a single event that could pool the efforts of both organizations, thus providing a bigger benefit for those in attendance. For now, Santa Claus at the Southeast Precinct was a hit with 36 exhibitors and 18 countries that participated in the event, as well as 10 activities on family understanding and communication, and enough food for all 1,100 people in attendance. “We end another year, happy with the response from people and from the comments we received
but, at the same time, we are starting all planning for next year, hoping that we can do great things for the benefit of our community, allowing them to understand that the Police Department is their friend and that we care about being close to them as the good neighbors that we are, not only during this Christmas season, but throughout the whole year. This is why we will continue to work on this, leaving our doors open to anyone who wants to be a part of this beautiful Christmas event,” said Ofelia. Santa Claus at the Southeast Precinct is a traditional event in South Omaha that gathers thousands of people every year, but the social, civil, educational and entertainment potential could be maximized if it had the proper financial backing for an event of this nature, according to the opinion of the Directors of 6 local organizations consulted for this editorial. Robles is currently considering creating an Advisory Committee where she would invite a diverse range of community leaders, knowing that the event is important for the community and always wanting to increase its social impact, something that won’t be possible unless more private and public agencies provide the support that this event needs to grow in South Omaha.
DURING THE EVENT, RADIO LOBO 97.7 WAS HONORED FOR SUPPORTING THIS ACTIVITY.

“

Local Vigil FOR COMMONSENSE IMMIGRATION REFORM
“
[by Liz Codina]
What an appropriate night to stand here and to acknowledge the darkness that exists with immigration laws,” said Rabbi Aryeh Azriel, who welcomed a group of over 70 attendees to a vigil held just outside of the Roman L. Hruska U.S Courthouse on Tuesday, December 3, the seventh day of Hanukah. The local vigil, sponsored by a coalition of organizations including Nebraska Appleseed, the AntiDefamation League Plains States, Justice for Our Neighbors Nebraska and The Heartland Workers Center among others, served the purpose of encouraging area residents to support commonsense immigration reform. “Hanukah is a holiday where we are banishing the darkness, where we try to create a society that is based on the foundation of ethics, justice and definitely hope,” commented Azriel. The rabbi indicated “today we face the enormous challenges caused by our nation’s long and outdated immigration system. Over eleven million undocumented immigrants live in the shadows of our communities across the country.” In
10 EL PERICO | LOCAL STORY
fact, the current broken immigration system has failed many. Azriel pointed out that many workers are left without protection and many children are left behind without protection when their parents are deported. “We can no longer delay the creation of a commonsense immigration system that is based on streamlined processing and commitment to obey the rule of law, family reunification and a path to citizenship,” said Azriel. Azriel pointedly mentioned that “commonsense immigration is about border policies that are consistent with American humanitarian values. Commonsense means opportunities for hard working immigrants who are already contributing to this country,” and elected representatives need to push for reform so families do not have to wait years to be reunited with their loved ones; family members that include children, parents and spouses. Many community members feel the same as Rabbi Azriel. Abbie Kretz, an organizer with the Heartland Workers Center mentioned that “the issue of immigration reform has not died down,”
| Del 12 al 18 de Diciembre, 2013.
and “it won’t until something takes place and reform policies are changed, ones that are actually beneficial to the community.” “Although there are other priorities for Washington, this is an issue that continues to be a very important issue for the communities outside of Washington and for many constituents,” said Kretz. The local organizer said she believes it is time for elected representatives to listen to their constituents and push for commonsense immigration reform, reform that “will be beneficial for all aspects of society in terms of the economy and in terms of jobs.” Heartland Workers Center Executive Director and vigil co-sponsor, Sergio Sosa, said “there is hope to keep fighting for those families that have been separated,” and he encourages everyone to push for reform. Additionally, Sosa urges Nebraska representatives including Lee Terry to “just get it done,” and not wait any more time before they support immigration reform and urge their colleagues to do the same in Washington. “It is in everybody’s best interest to fix our broken immigration system, the system that is not helping
the economy, is not helping our families, it is not helping national security. It is in everybody’s best interest to fix the broken immigration system in a just and fair way that will keep families together,” advocated Emiliano Lerda, the Executive Director of Justice for Our Neighbors Nebraska. Many Nebraska families have been affected by the broken immigration system. In fact, many families are needlessly torn apart by the outdated immigration laws and the time has come for change. The vigil is just one of many local activities that are encouraging the local community to unite and push for just and fair immigration laws. However, the local community cannot create change alone; they will need the support of elected representatives to get the job done in Washington. Too many families have already been torn apart and too many immigrant workers have had their rights abused. As Rabbi Azriel indicated, it is time to banish the darkness and face the challenge of fixing immigration laws in the United States once and for all.”

President’s Weekly Address President Obama recently issued a statement urging congress to extend unemployment benefits to over 1 million Americans. “For many families, it can be the difference between hardship and catastrophe,” remarked President Obama. In fact “last year alone, it lifted 2.5 million people out of poverty, and cushioned the blow for many more,” added Obama. According to the President, if Congress does not act before they leave for vacation, 20,000 veterans and many other Americans will lose this important lifeline. Obama also pointed out that if Congress does not act quickly these families will not be the only ones struggling; the whole United States economy will struggle this upcoming year if this benefit is not extended.

n May, 1990, and as a 5 month old baby carried by her mom Estela, Lulu Rangel arrived to the United States along with her brother Sergio, who was 8 years old. They left Mexico behind to join Sergio Rangel, head of the family, who back then was fighting in this country to build a better tomorrow for his family. “My parents were born in Guanajuato, and I was born in Queretaro, but my father left Mexico when he was still very young in order to work here,” remembered Lulu. The Rangel family spent a few days in Pasadena before settling at Omaha: “Living here has been easy because my parents have taught all of their children the best of Mexican culture (Lulu has two younger sisters, Viviana and Dulce), but they’ve also adapted to American culture, so we end up getting the best of both worlds.” Lulu was an outstanding dancer for the Xiomari Folkloric Ballet for The Latino Museum, created by Magdalena Garcia, and she participated at the Las Estrellitas Mariachi of Marcos Mora: “It was wonderful because Omaha is always open to celebrating Mexican culture, and I’m fascinated by my cultural roots.” The 24 year old says that what she admires the most is the Latino community for how “its families are always as one.” “My mom has always cared for us above everything else,” said Lulu, adding that Estela always managed to overcome every obstacles by herself, from starting as part of the cleaning staff at the recently closed Asuncion Guadalupe School, to working as interpreter and then as secretary, all the way to her current job at Sts. Peter and Paul School. “My dad also works very hard – said Lulu – starting at packing companies and now currently working at Peter Kiewit constructions. His example is what motivates me to continue with my education since I have to excel because they have done so much in order for me to have a better life.” Lulu graduated in May with a Bachelor’s in Social Work from the University, and since February she’s been the Coordinator for the Shelter at Com-
BRIEFS National Contest Finalist The Nebraska Latino American Commission (NLAC) recently submitted a photograph to the 2013 Affiliate Photo contest presented by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR). Submissions were accepted from all over the nation and the NLAC’s photograph has been selected as one of the ten finalists. “Our photo is different in that it shows cross-cultural bridging and multiculturism,” remarked Dr. Arturo Spindola, Executive Director of the Nebraska Latino American Commission. The photograph, taken by University of Nebraska-Lincoln student Bethany Schmidt, shows Lincoln East High School student Emily Hernandez singing the national anthem at the 2013 Hispanic Heritage Month State commemoration that took place at the Capitol Building on October 4.
pletely KIDS: “This agency used to be Camp Fire USA, and I actually benefited from said program as a student, and I loved what they were doing.” When it made the formal change to Completely KIDS under the leadership of Penny Parker, Lulu was already in College, so she started helping out there along with the Family Specialist at Field Club School. “We are at 7 Elementary Schools and High schools, and at 3 homeless shelters – explained Lulu- and it is there that I collaborate since I have an after school program for children so that they can participate on several activities, and we also give them some food, which helps them be distracted from their current situation. When we think of homeless shelters we don’t think of children, and the truth is that several of the services are not for them, which is why I like to work with Completely KIDS because I can play with them and take them out for a walk.” For Lulu “having grown at a home where we didn’t have much, but where our parents always

helped others,” is the biggest impulse for completing tasks, some of which were never easy: “I’ve worked with children between 4 and 13 years of age and I’ve grown fond of them. The hardest part is not being able to know when they’ll leave the shelter and where they will go. They usually leave the shelter when they’ve found a home, which makes me very happy, but it’s sad not being able to say goodbye to them.” Oddly enough, Lulu does not have any Latino kids under her watch “because Latino families always try to find a way to find the support of uncles or cousins, before having to go to a shelter.” The young social worker yearns studying for a Master’s Degree, as well as becoming a bilingual therapist “to help my community.” Lulu Rangel / Coordinator for the Shelter Completely KIDS 2566 St. Mary’s Avenue Omaha, NE 68105 lrangel@completelykids.org 402.397.5809 Ext. 219 completelykids.org .
Hispanics on Obama Poll results released last week by Gallup indicate that Obama’s approval rating among Hispanics has decreased dramatically. According to the Gallup poll, President Obama’s approval rating was 75 percent in December of 2012, a November 2013 poll indicated the President’s approval rating among Hispanics has fallen to 52 percent, a drop of twenty-three points. According to the Gallup poll, support for Obama among other nonwhites and low-income Americans has also decreased. President Obama has been facing a great deal of criticism among Hispanics for his failure to address immigration issues that are affecting millions across the United States.
