El Top 10 de
HISTORIAS
D

or 37 years, Project Censored has worked with college students and faculty to issue an annual list of the Top 25 Underreported or Censored Stories from the previous year. Below we list the Top 10 and reprint excerpts from the most relevant to El Perico’s readership. Full details and links are available at www.projectcensored.org.
1. Bradley Manning and the Failure of Corporate Media
In February 2013, United States military intelligence analyst Bradley Manning confessed in court to providing vast archives of military and diplomatic files to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, saying he wanted the information to become public “to make the world a better place” and that he hoped to “spark a domestic debate on the role of the military in (US) foreign policy.” The 700,000 released documents revealed a multitude of previously secret crimes and acts of deceit and corruption by US military and government officials. According to Manning’s testimony in February 2013, he tried to release the Afghanistan and Iraq War Logs through conventional sources. In winter 2010, he contacted the Washington Post, the New York Times, and Politico in hopes that they would publish the materials. Only after being rebuffed by these three outlets did Manning begin uploading documents to WikiLeaks. US corporate media have largely shunned Manning’s case, not to mention the importance of the information he released.
Leaked text from the thirty-chapter agreement has revealed that negotiators have already agreed to many radical terms, granting expansive new rights and privileges for foreign investors and their enforcement through extrajudicial “investor-state” tribunals. Through these, corporations would be given special authority to dispute laws, regulations, and court decisions. Foreign firms could extract unlimited amounts of taxpayer money as compensation for “financial damages” to “expected future profits” caused by efforts to protect domestic finance, health, labor, environment, land use, and other laws they claim undermine their new TPP privileges.
4. Obama’s War on Whistleblowers 5. Hate Groups and Antigovernment Groups on Rise across US
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which monitors hate groups and antigovernment groups, released a report showing that 1,360 radical, antigovernment “patriot” groups and 321 militias actively operate within the United States. Released in March 2013, these
2. Richest Global 1 Percent Hide Trillions in Tax Havens 3. Trans-Pacific Partnership Threatens a Regime of Corporate Global Governance
The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), branded as a trade agreement and negotiated in unprecedented secrecy, is actually an enforceable transfer of sovereignty from nations and their people to foreign corporations. As of December 2012, eleven countries were involved—Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam, and the United States—with the possibility of more joining in the future due to inclusion of an unusual “docking agreement.” While the public, US Congress, and the press are locked out, 600 corporate advisors are meeting with officials of signatory governments behind closed doors to complete text for the world’s biggest multinational trade agreement, which aims to penalize countries that protect their workers, consumers, or environment.

statistics show an 813 percent rise in the number of such groups since 2008, with increasing numbers each year. Hate groups are most prevalent in California, with eighty-four total; Texas was second among states with sixty-two. The SPLC counted over 1,000 hate groups in the US in 2012. By the SPLC’s standards, hate groups “have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics,” and their activities can include “criminal acts, marches, rallies, speeches, meetings, leafleting or publishing.”
6. Billionaires’ Rising Wealth Intensifies Poverty and Inequality 7. Merchants of Death and Nuclear Weapons 8. Bank Interests Inflate Global Prices by 35 to 40 Percent 9. Icelanders Vote to Include Commons in Their Constitution 10. A “Culture of Cruelty” along Mexico–US Border
Migrants crossing the Mexico–US border not only face dangers posed by an unforgiving desert but also abuse at the hands of the US Border Patrol. During their journey through the desert, migrants risk dehydration, starvation, exhaustion, and the possibility of being threatened and robbed. Unfortunately, the dangers continue if they come in contact with the Border Patrol. In “A Culture of Cruelty,” the organization No More Deaths revealed human rights violations by the US Border Patrol including limiting or denying migrants water and food, verbal and physical abuse, and failing to provide necessary medical attention. Female migrants face additional violations including sexual abuse, according to No More Deaths. As Erika L. Sánchez reported, “Dehumanization of immigrants is actually part of the Border Patrol’s institutional culture. Instances of misconduct are not aberrations, but common practice.” The Border Patrol has denied any wrongdoing and has not been held responsible for these abuses. Public debate on immigration tends to ignore not only the potential dangers of crossing the desert, but also the reasons for the migration of undocumented immigrants to the US. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), signed by US president Bill Clinton and Mexican president Carlos Salinas in 1994, displaced many Mexican farmers and workers from their farms. Lack of employment resulting from NAFTA continues to motivate many to migrate to the US.

“
Day of the Dead
in style
[by Marina Rosado]
The Day of the Dead celebration grows with each passing year, and the artistic presentations become more interesting and unique. Some people believe this is the Mexican version of Halloween, but that is not the case. When I present a cultural programme, I always establish a link between art and its educational value because if we first know the history of this tradition, it will be easier to find different ways to express it,” explained Linda Garcia, artist responsible for “Los Dias de los Muertos: Las Historias del Corazon” (Days of the Dead: Stories from the Heart), presented by the Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands, at the Metropolitan Community College in North Omaha. “Over the world, there are people who do not profess any religion – said Garcia-, and they’re not even Mexican or Hispanic, but they still adopt the customs and traditions of the Day of the Dead because it’s a link that allows them to connect to their loved ones and be able to talk about those that have already passed away.” Garcia lost Tony Rivera, her birth father, when she was little, and her mother, Mary Hembertt Perez eventually married Crispin “Cris” Perez. Their marriage lasted for 63 years but, unfortunately, Cris recently passed away after reaching 90 years of age: “For us, it was very painful, but being able to remember my father during these cele-

brations makes it easier. It’s as if we feel more comfortable about sharing all the lovely memories we have… he was a man of few words, but he was always there for his kids.” That is why in 2013, readings, exhibits and performances have a special meaning for the Garcia Family: “Although art is usually displayed at museums or galleries, we all honor our relatives at home at one point or another. That is why right about now we start to think about what we will place in our altars; maybe a hat, a pipe, an object of their devotion or a photograph, but what is certain is that we observe these small offerings on a daily basis as we place them in that one particular spot in order to remember those that have passed away. And there’s no better moment to browse a photo album and tell stories to the new generations! As human beings, we all want to be loved and remembered. The biggest honor for someone is to keep them alive through their memories.” For 27 days, the presentation by Linda and Jose Garcia invites the audience to interact by expressing their stories and capturing their essence, from learning how to make their own book to basking in the style and narrative of the art of over 20 artists, thanks to all the painters, sculptors, musicians and storytellers that are part of this journey. that have recently passed away, and who inspired the Garcia, such as Pura Belpre, Nancy Duncan and Dr. Isabel Schon. And we must not forget the 100th anniversary of the death of well known and recognized engraver and etcher Jose Guadalupe Posada, author of La Catrina. “Los Dias de los Muertos: Las Historias del Corazon” will end on November 2nd with a programme that will start at 5:30pm with performances from the Pixan Ixim Mayan Community, Colombian harpist William Sanchez and a play titled “Riendose de la Muerte” (Laughing at Death), an ensemble with dancers and actor from the Mexican Cultural Arts Center with the participation of the Xiotal Folklore Ballet and members of the theater group La Puerta. “For me, the Day of the Dead is a celebration of life. I’ve always believed that life is a cycle and that when we die, we’re reborn!” said choreographer Hector Moreno, Artistic Director of the Xiotal Folklore Ballet. “With Xiotal, I created two previous performances where we used elements of Michoacan, but this year I decided to introduce a change with a project I had managed before about the life and work of Frida Kahlo and linking that with the festivities of the Itsmo of Tehuantepec (Oaxaca),” said Moreno who added that Samuel Pulido collaborated with the biographic dialogs of Kahlo, which portray her childhood, adolescence and adult life.
“Our community is filled with tradition and culture, with great artists, dancers, poets, musicians, actors and painters, with all that we contribute to this community… which is priceless. It is time for people to accept that Hispanics aren’t only construction workers or cleaning people; we contribute to the cultural and artistic movement in Omaha.” “Riendose de la Muerte” premiered last Friday during the celebration of the Day of the Dead at the Intercultural Senior Center. “It is amazing to see how the Center has lifted the entire community with a single event that, for us, represents an opportunity to raise funds for our programs and services – said Carolina Padilla, Director for the center – since we started with a modest celebration 5 years ago, and from three years until now, it has become a very important celebration for all students, educational organizations and senior citizens who join us.” The festivities at the Center included everything from mariachi music to tamales and tiny sugar skulls, and had the presence of a diverse group of seniors from places as far away as Burma: “This celebration is to honor those that have already departed, and here at the Center our obligation is to work with the elderly, with men and women who need emotional support and a little place where they can feel alive.”

Obama’s Weekly Address: Healthcare President Obama’s Oct 26 address to the nation focused on the launch of the Health Insurance Marketplace for the Affordable Care Act. The President indicated that the easiest way for Americans to purchase insurance in the Markeplace will be through the website HYPERLINK “http:// healthcare.gov/” \t “_blank” healthcare.gov or by calling HYPERLINK “tel:1-800-318-2596” \t “_ blank” 1-800-318-2596. Obama and his administration have faced a lot of criticism from Republicans about the healthcare law and the current glitches with the website, however Obama remains positive and indicated “it’s well past the time for folks to stop rooting for its failure, because hardworking, middle-class families are rooting for its success.” In fact, staff is currently working day and night to fix any problems, and as Obama asserted “we did not fight so hard for this reform for so many years just to build a website,” adding “we did it to cement the principle that in this country, the security of health care is not a privilege for a fortunate few, but a right every one of us to enjoy.” Local Conference The Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha is hosting their 10th anniversary celebration on November 8-9. awyer Michelle M. Lents returned to Omaha two years ago to rekindle with the community where she spent her childhood: “My father was in the military so when I was little we moved to California. That’s where I went to school and started to practice law in the early 90s. In 2011, I decided to move back to Omaha because of my family since my mother retired and moved here, and so did my son.” Upon arriving at Omaha, Lents started to work for the Law Firm of Lawyer Richard Mendez where she gained some valuable experience on Immigration Law until she decided to open her own Law Firm this past summer: “We opened up for business in July at South Omaha where I used to live… and for me it felt just like going back home! There is plenty of activity, and you can always see busy people walking out in the streets. This is a very convenient zone, and I wanted my clients to have easy access to my office.” Lents graduated in 1993 from the School of Law at the University of San Diego, and went to have a prominent career in California: “That is why for now I only have my license in California, but this allows
me to offer my services regarding immigration to the people of Nebraska.” This lawyer helps people during court proceedings such as, for example, those relating to a petition to bring a family member from their home country and into the United States. “Those are the cases I work on the most as well as on those about Deferred Action,” added Lents. Lents’ Law Firm has staff members that speak Spanish, for your convenience: “Abiut Arcos is in charge of advertising and works with me as a consultant, and July Sanchez, who studies at UNO, helps out on Saturdays.” For Abiut Arcos: “Working with Michelle is a great honor because I’ve worked with immigration lawyers before and I’ve witnessed how many of them aren’t honest with their clients, even though they’re part of the Hispanic community. Michelle is someone with excellent work ethics, and she always explains to her clients how their case is going and what can and can’t be done.” Arcos emphasized that: “With us, the first consultation meeting is free, and if people have a relative in jail that requires of our services, we can go and visit them. We also have
a phone number for calls in Spanish, 402.2109997, in case of an emergency.” Lents recommends that people “…should always be informed. They should watch the news so that they can know what is going on because it’s very likely that the Immigration Reform will happen soon, if not this year then definitely in 2014. This is why they should start gathering their documents (birth certificates, passports, receipts for money orders sent, anything that can contribute to proving their physical presence in this country), and they should also start saving some money to cover the cost for the process because, if eligible, they’ll be able to get started with the process right away.”
