Dulce Matuz:

ACTIVISTA RECONOCIDA A NIVEL NACIONAL VISITA OMAHA

“

Dulce Matuz: NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED ACTIVIST VISITS OMAHA

“

[By: Liz Codina]

We are paying attention to what is going on and we are making sure that everyone is being engaged in the political process and we are tired of people playing with our lives, these are people’s lives,” explained Dulce Matuz, an Arizona activist who topped Time Magazine’s 2012 list of 100 most influential people in the world. Matuz, a native of Hermosillo, Mexico who immigrated to the United States at the age of 15, believes there are “a lot of people spreading lies about us, they have portrayed us as criminals, as people that don’t speak English, as people that don’t have degrees and that has to change,” and “the only way it is going to change is if you come forward and share your story.” Currently, Matuz serves as the President of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition and is ready to lead by example. Matuz’s story is like that of many immigrants. “A lot of people didn’t know what to do with high school students like me that had good GPA’s, which had the community service, who had goals but didn’t have that social or didn’t have that immigration status.” Her lack of a social security number during the college application process proved to be a very defining moment in her life and it would prove to be the first of many problems. After finally overcoming the hurdle of getting admitted to Arizona State University, Matuz faced yet another hurdle -- this problem would later spark her involvement in the fight immigration reform.

6

“Immigration back in 2003, when I graduated from high school wasn’t really a hot topic and no one wanted to talk about it. It was a taboo subject. It was not until we started getting directly attacked that it hit me again, there are people that believe you are not good enough, there are people that think you shouldn’t be getting an education,” shared a somber Matuz. According to the activist, legislators in Arizona passed Proposition 300, which mandated that all immigrant students that could not show proof of legal status would be required to pay out of state tuition. “My tuition increased from $2,500 to $8,500 per semester,” and “on top of that, they said even though you have the GPA, the community service and you deserve that scholarship we are not going to give it to you.” Matuz indicated that Dreamer’s “were pretty much banned from getting scholarships and our tuition tripled.” At that moment she realized she needed to do something about her situation. “When I decided to get involved with immigration it was very organically, it was not just for me but it was for a lot of other students in my situation,” recollected Matuz. Matuz’s group started out as a support group where she and fellow students would cry together, talk together and help each other. “It was not until the DREAM Act was re-introduced in 2009 that we decided to formalize a group, that is when a handful of us decided to form the Arizona Dream Act Coalition,” said Matuz. The vision of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition is “to create a nation of fully educated

and integrated immigrant youth,” and advocate for the DREAM Act and immigration reform. “Sometimes we are very narrow-minded and we think that we need money to solve our problems or we need circles of influence to solve our problems, but in reality, change comes from ordinary people and we need to fight because our most powerful weapon is our stories,” indicated a passionate Matuz. Matuz added “even though America is taking longer to make the morally right decision of fixing our broken immigration system, I know and I have the conviction that it is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when.” “I am pretty sure that is going to happen, but we need to hit critical mass. We need everybody to get involved in any way, shape or form,” exclaimed an eager Matuz. Although she said the struggle might be frustrating at times, it would be worth it in the end and encourages everyone to do their part. Matuz’s strong message to local communities isn’t her only one, in fact Matuz also has a clear message for elected representatives: “Do you want to be on the right side of history or not?” she asks. ”Immigration reform and integration for immigrants is inevitable, you can’t stop it,” affirmed Matuz, adding that elected representatives need to respond to the moral call and make a morally correct decision now, because “the time is now!” As Matuz indicates, there are both moral and economic benefits to immigration reform and it is up to us to decide if we want to keep failing to mend a broken system.

Vivan los Dias de los Muertos UNA TRADICIÓN MEXICANA SE MATERIALIZA EN OMAHA

M

LOCAL OFRENDA OF THE CAMACHO FAMILY

Local Art On Tuesday, October 15 the Kent Bellows Studio and Omaha Fire Station 21 celebrated a new mural project in South Omaha. The new mural near El Museo Latino was funded by the City of Omaha Public Works and Humanities Nebraska. Three teenage artists working under mentors created the mural which represents the history of South Omaha, the fire station and the artists own artistic vision. “This unique mural project focuses on the intersection between community murals, street art, public space and local history,” according to Weston Thomas, Interim Executive Director of The Kent Bellows Studio.

A MEXICAN TRADITION COMES ALIVE IN OMAHA.

s Halloween hovers on the horizon, and people gear up to put on gruesome, bizarre, or funny costumes and children seek sweets from door to door, a related, but more earnest, tradition flourishes until November 2, given life by the Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands (MAHS). In a large, long hall at Metropolitan Community College, amid a few closed classrooms, people in this community witness Los Dias de los Muertos (“The Days of the Dead”), a Mexican celebration honoring loved ones who have gone on to other places, bodies and bones encased in stone, resting in Mother Earth or dispersed as ashes towards the heavens. In this celebration of the transition, we are reminded that such journeys lie ahead for us all—an awareness stretching North and South, East and West all around the globe, roots going back multiple centuries, including the time before European boots touched this hemisphere. “Every indigenous culture has something similar, honoring ancestors,” says Linda Garcia, MAHS cofounder and project director of this festival. “There are so many kinds of remembrances. It’s like Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day, Veterans’ Day all rolled into one.” She calls this event “Stories By Heart,” defining that as “…the foundation of memories, stories and mythic traditions.” Opening day she mingled among visitors taking in ceramics, collages, sculptures, fabric art, giant cut-out window-sized paper flowers floating towards the heavens, tiny engraved buttons, greeting cards, live flowers, metal wood saws re-worked and re-formed into fascinating patterns, pictures depicting skeletons playing

sports, cooking, performing. And the face of Mexico’s Frida Kahlo, a sort of patron saint of women painters, awaited gazes in multiple places. Meanwhile, Juan Carlos Veloso played “Besame Mucho” at double keyboards, a further expression of love. Garcia says the styles and subjects in the exhibition range from the very traditional to the very contemporary. She and gallery designer/director, Cuban-American Mike Girón decided what to display, contacting artists whose work they already knew and admired. Some of the contributors were new to themes of Los Dias de los Muertos. After it’s all over and honor’s been done to the mortals who’ve become immortal, you could take home remembrances; the twenty or so participating artists offer you their work at prices from $4 to $2,000. Visual art may look like the main focus, but there also are varied, cross-cultural live events. You can hear tales and ballads in “Vaquero to Buckeroo-Cowboy Culture,” presented by New Mexico’s Ricardo Garcia; “The Wordsmiths,” a group of “Edutainers” use storytelling, poetry, and songs to encapsulate African-American oral traditions; an Omaha and a Choctaw native narrate tales of tribal inheritances with a sign language interpreter by their sides. Plus twelve poets read their own words in “Las Palabras del Corazón.” And, as a finale, Comunidad Maya Pixan Ixim performs marimba pieces after which Ballet Folklorico Xiotal dances, harpist William Sanchez plucking and stroking the melodies. For some of these events there are modest charges from $2 to $10. In others, the presenters would be delighted with whatever donation you are moved to make. There is no admission charge for the exhibition. Garcia points out that the celebration is “deeply rooted in America’s Pre-Columbian past. Central to its mean-

ing,” she says, “is a need within families and, increasingly, within general society to ensure that memories of the times and the experiences of departed loved one are not forgotten.” You may not readily see a parallel to Halloween in this celebration, given that its original meaning has been overshadowed by making ghosts terrifying rather than benign. Actually the currently popular partying began as All Hallows Evening, October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows or All Saints, a time to remember saints, martyrs, and all the faithful departed. The Mexican version traces back, as well, to an Aztec festival. An essential element of the beliefs that underlie such contemplations of death is that there are other planes of existence, including, but not limited to, Christian Heaven. Long ago, the Buddhists and the Hindus embraced death as a different stage of life. Deb McColley’s offering at the exhibit underscores that, framing the moving words of Norwegian painter Edvard Munch: “From my rotting body, flowers shall grow, and I am in them, and that is eternity.” Los Dias de los Muertos—Stories by Heart continues through Nov. 2 at Metropolitan Community College’s Fort Omaha Campus, Building 21 (“Mule Barn”) at 32nd and Sorensen Parkway. Directions: upon arrival at the entrance, turn to the first building on the left. Terry Retracts Statement After Congressman Lee Terry (R-NE) initially indicated he would be keeping his paycheck after the government shutdown, he retracted his statement in an official press release after receiving backlash from his constituents. “The other day I made a statement that I would put my needs above others in crisis, I’m ashamed of my comments. It was not leadership,” confessed Terry. The congressman later explained that he should and will stand in the shoes of the furloughed federal civilian employees. “We share the same responsibilities to pay our bills and if they don’t receive a paycheck and must take extraordinary efforts to sacrifice to pay them, then I should too.” Views on Immigration The Pew Research Hispanic Center recently released a report indicating that “Hispanics’ views on the impact of unauthorized immigration on the U.S Hispanic community have grown more positive since 2010.” According to the new report, in 2010 29 percent of Hispanics had positive views on the subject. The number rose to 45 percent in 2013. According to the study “it is possible that in 2010, a combination of a weak economy and a hardening political environment around immigration may have led to a more downbeat assessment of illegal immigration’s impact on U.S. Latinos.”

[by Marina Rosado]

G

reg Wittenburg was born in Texas, grew up in Kansas and arrived in Omaha a few years ago to continue his education at Creighton University: “I was in Liberal Studies for philosophy, economy and several languages. I obtained the required credits for Med School because that is the road I would like to take in the future.” Wittenburg, who has lived in Peru, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador, speaks fluent Spanish and has worked at the OneWorld Community Health Centers (since February, 2013) as Community Health Educator, being responsible for the Health Booth at the Mexican Consulate in Omaha. “The Health Booth started in San Diego and Los Angeles in 2001 - said Wittenburg – and it’s currently part of every single Mexican Consulate in Canada and the US.” Wittenburg explained: “the Institute for Mexicans Abroad provides funds to fiscal agencies in order to support the Health Booth and, in this case, OneWorld was selected,” which is why the Health Booth is a joint project between the Mexican Government, the Mexican Consulate for Iowa and Nebraska, and OneWorld Community Health Centers. Stating that the Health Booth “is not a health clinic,” Wittenburg said that the Booth was created to “provide basic health screening exams,” to establish a link between the community and the available healthcare medical services. Most of the people that visit the Consulate “don’t come here thinking about getting a health checkup, they come for other things such as securing their Consular ID, obtaining a Passport or if one of their relatives has passed away, for the repatriation of mortal remains; but when they see a health booth in here, they feel comfortable approaching it to see what it is all about.” At the Health Booth in the Mexican Consulate, all services are free, and checkups are offered on a regular basis: “On Wednesdays, we have Vision Screen-

ings and on most Tuesdays we check the blood levels for glucose and cholesterol.” An important detail to mention is that if someone needs medical attention and does not have health insurance “we can help them set up an appointment at one of the community clinics that are more affordable to them, and we register them into Mexican healthcare programs such as the ‘Seguro Popular’.” The Health Booth offers its services with the help of the University of Creighton, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the Methodist College, and several other organizations such as Prevent Blindness America. “Health is the door into many other topics related to social issues,” said Wittenburg who provides educational brochures from several agencies in order to refer those that need some extra help such as, say, assistance for a child with special needs, or for people who suffer from domestic violence. Wittenburg was an active participant in the successful BiNational Health Week from the Mexican Consulate which “gathered over 50 organizations that for 7 months planned this event in order to collaborate for the greater good of the community.” This young Health Educator, who was trained by Alejandra Rebolledo (the person previously in charge of the Health Booth), emphasized that the Health Booth “represents the effort of many other people, such as Dr. Armando de Alba.” “Our wish is to improve and strengthen the quality of the services available here while also creating links between healthcare providers and the community so that there can be a bigger cultural sensitivity towards the patient,” concluded Wittenburg. Greg Wittenburg/Community Health Educator, OneWorld Community Health Centers Health Booth - Mexican Consulate 7444 Farnam St, Omaha, NE 68114 785.640.3087 gwittenburg@oneworldomaha.org Open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m.- 1 p.m.
