OVER THE BACK FENCE

Is it just me, or does the Christmas season start earlier every year? Hallowe’en is barely over before retailers start hauling out the holiday items and decor. Some people have even started decorating their homes for the holidays. I try to wait until at least the beginning of December to bring out the Gnome Council and let them dictate who goes where. There’s plenty to get you into the holiday spirit in our communities. There are Christmas markets, parades, tree festivals, concerts and so much more to help lift the mood. This weekend really kicks off the holiday season in the Kawarthas ... with the Kawartha Lakes Festival of Trees at Settlers’ Village in Bobcaygeon, Bobcaygeon’s Mingle & Jingle on Saturday, the Buckhorn Santa Claus parade on Saturday and so much more! I’m going to try to hit most of them to ramp up my own Christmas spirit.

One of the best ways to get into the right mindset is to volunteer for one of the organizations running these terrific holiday events. I was at the Buckhorn Community Centre this week, helping fluff and decorate trees for the Festival of Trees & Decor that runs from November 21 to December 10. If you can, please consider giving some time to one of the local organizations at one of the events. Even a few hours helps them out. Sometimes we can lose sight of what’s really important, especially at this time of year, and that is helping others. Especially during the holidays, our local Food Banks help those who need a hand up. It doesn’t take much to donate some food items or make a cash donation. There are opportunities at some of our events to make a donation and many of the parades accept donations as they march by, so it’s very convenient. Please consider this as you head out. Doing something nice for someone else makes you feel good and reminds us what the season is about. Please do what you can and support local! editor@thepromoter.ca

City Hall HERITAGE PERMITS

The City of Kawartha Lakes has announced that heritage permit applications for both individually designated heritage properties and heritage properties located in heritage conservation districts are now available online through the CityWorks Public Access Portal on the City’s website. Owners of heritage properties and contractors will now be able to apply for heritage permits online through the portal and have notices and approvals delivered directly to their inbox. “The online permit application system will make heritage permitting more efficient for our residents,” said Emily Turner, Economic Development Officer – Heritage Planning, “We’re excited to be able to offer this service to heritage property owners to help them maintain and conserve their heritage buildings.” Paper and PDF permit applications remain available for residents who prefer to submit in hardcopy or by email. Heritage property owners are still encouraged to reach out to Heritage Planning staff prior to applying to discuss their project and the heritage permitting process. PROVINCE FIXING POTHOLES

The Ontario government is investing $10 million to make roads safer by preventing accidents and damage that can occur from potholes. Under the new Pothole Prevention and Repair Program, municipalities with populations of up to 10,000 people can apply for funding to support critical road maintenance and pothole repair. The program is part of the government’s work to protect Ontario by making record investments in infrastructure that will keep communities safe, keep workers on the job and support economic growth. “This funding will help small municipalities repair potholes before they cause costly vehicle damage, helping families to travel safely and businesses to keep goods moving,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “In addition to this important program, our government is investing nearly $30 billion to build, repair and expand highways, roads and bridges

across Ontario, connecting more communities to jobs, housing and economic opportunities.” The Pothole Prevention and Repair Program is designed to support smaller communities that do not have the same capacity or funding base as larger municipalities. Eligible municipalities can receive up to $38,000 for projects. “This new program is a win for smaller municipalities across Ontario,” said Ric Bresee, MPP for Hastings-Lennox and Addington. “By investing in local transportation infrastructure, we’re helping communities protect and extend the life of their roads while keeping drivers safe and supporting economic growth. When we give municipalities the tools they need, we build a stronger Ontario for everyone.” Applications for the Pothole Prevention and Repair Program are now open. Eligible municipalities can apply until December 12, 2025.

KLT PROTECTS MORE LAND

Earlier this month, Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) announced the permanent protection of the 435acre (176-hectare) Kawartha Highlands South nature reserve in the Municipality of Trent Lakes and the future creation of community hiking trails. The purchase of this ecologically significant land was secured with financial support received from Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund (NSCSF), Natural Heritage Conservation Program — Land Trusts Conservation Fund (NHCP-LTCF) and the Province of Ontario’s Greenlands Conservation Partnership (GCP) program. Donations from more than 450 individuals and families helped protect this natural asset for future generations. An anonymous donor who offered to match all donations up to $100,000 helped launch KLT’s summer-long campaign. Additional vital project support was received from the Echo Foundation, Ontario Conservation Accelerator (OCA) and Wild Rock’s ComPassion Project. KLT’s newest nature reserve is home to iconic granite rock barrens, expansive forests, wetlands, and natural shoreline along 1.2 kilometres of the Mississagua River. The property is bordered on three sides by Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park, a popular destination in Ontario for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and paddlers. Over 100 species of wildlife have been observed on the nature reserve, including Black Bear, Moose, and Fisher. The property’s wetlands provide habitat for numerous species, including North American River Otter, turtles, wading birds, waterfowl, and others. Thanks to visionary funders, generous donors, and dedicated volunteers, vital wildlife habitat will be protected, and 3-5 kilometres of hiking trails will be created for local residents and visitors to enjoy. It is anticipated that the trails will be established and opened to the public by the fall of 2027. KLT plans to observe the property for one year — during all four seasons — to inform trail decisions that will strike a balance between ecological and recreational needs. Kawartha Land Trust protects thousands of acres

of natural and working lands across the Kawarthas for future generations. In 2026, KLT will celebrate its 25th anniversary through a series of events and celebrations.

As part of this milestone, we are honouring the incredible support and creativity of our members with a special exhibit, “Your Hometown HeART”, featuring artworks created exclusively by our Members and Supporters. This will also mark the inaugural exhibit in the Gallery’s Art Nook Gallery exhibit space location at, 19 Cambridge Street South, Lindsay. TOY DRIVE WHILE YOU MINGLE

The Bobcaygeon Lion’s Club and Chamber of Commerce are teaming up on Saturday, November 15 for a Toy Drive. While you’re in Bobcaygeon for Mingle & Jingle, stop by The Boyd Heritage Museum with a donation to Childhood Cancer at Peterborough Regional health Centre and Southlake Hospital that will help make someone’s holidays brighter. They’re asking for donations of new blankets and soft quilts, gift cards, new small toys. The donation box will be open from 10am to 4pm at 21 Canal Street East. At the recent Pumpkin Parade and PumpkinPalooza at The Grove Theatre in Fenelon Falls, there were plenty of ghoulish gourds to entertain visitors. While PumpkinPalooza was a celebration of artistic expression and innovation, participants are encouraged to think outside the pumpkin, taking the classic jack-o’-lantern to new heights of creativity. CELEBRATE THE SEASON IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS

The sights and sounds of the holiday season will come alive as Kawartha Conservation presents Christmas at Ken Reid on Saturday, December 6 from 10am to 4pm at Ken Reid Conservation Area. This annual celebration transforms the park into a festive wonderland filled with lights, laughter, and holiday cheer, and it’s free for everyone to enjoy. Visitors can look forward to visits with Santa Claus, horse-drawn wagon rides, a Christmas scavenger hunt, Kids’ Craft Corner, story walks, and live music throughout the day. The event combines nature and holiday tradition, offering a welcoming space for families, friends, and neighbours to celebrate the season together. Admission is free, and donations are appreciated to help the event continue to grow. Kawartha Conservation extends sincere thanks to Experience Ontario 2025 through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming for their support in helping make this year’s festivities possible. Whether you’ve lived here all your life or you are new to Kawartha Lakes, what matters most for you and your family is knowing that the highest quality care is available nearby. That is the message Jeff Todd is sharing this holiday season, through the RMH Foundation holiday appeal letters being delivered to households across Kawartha Lakes. Having grown up here, moved away for 20 years, and returned to raise his family, Jeff values community. He supports that sentiment as a hockey coach, as a volunteer on the RMH Foundation board of directors, and by giving to the WE ARE THE ROSS campaign. “Just as you trust your colleagues and teammates, you trust your community,” he said. “I see the Hospital as a centre for that trust. We all count on Ross Memorial to care for us when we need it most. And to show our gratitude, we give back when the hospital needs us,” said Jeff Todd. “In my finance consulting role, I see how technology helps organizations be more efficient and productive. SANTA DAY IN FENELON FALLS

There’s going to be plenty of holiday fun in Fenelon Falls on November 29as the town celebrates its annual Santa Day! From 11am to 4pm, you can enjoy a day full of free family activities throughout town, including face painting, letters for Santa, pony rides and more. Activities scheduled include a Santa Breakfast from 9am to 11am at Fenelon Falls Seniors’ Centre, a Live Nativity Scene at Trentside Baptist Church, Critter Visits at the Old Arena/Farmer’s Market Lot, decorate your own Gingerbread Cookie at Slices ‘n’ Scoops and so much more. It was Split the Pot Hospital Lottery, telling her she won the September consolation prize: $45,274! “I couldn’t believe it when I first learned I won,” said Tammy G. (Split the Pot prohibits participating hospital foundations from releasing winners’ full names). “The phone rang, I was like, no… I had to call back. The Buckhorn Community Centre transforms into a winter wonderland for their annual Festival of Trees & Décor event from November 21 to December 10. “We couldn’t do it without the support of sponsors and volunteers,” said Anne Connolly, team lead for the event. “Trees and holiday home décor item have been sponsored by local businesses and individuals. HUMANE SOCIETY HOSTS CHRISTMAS BAZAAR

The Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes (HSKL) is hosting their annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, November 15 from 9am to 1pm at Lakeland Funeral Centre in Lindsay. There will be 15 vendors offering unique gift ideas, as well as delicious treats from local bakers. At the event, they will be accepting donations of cat litter, and dog and cat food. Funds raised from sales at the event will support the animals at HSKL.

Here’s another way to get into the holiday spirit. The Buckhorn Community Centre is presenting Make & Mingle: Christmas Edition, where you can make a 2-foot Christmas tree or table centrepiece using fresh greens. There are two dates to choose from – Tuesday, December 3 from 1pm to 3pm or Wednesday, December 3 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Everything you need is supplied, but you’re asked to bring your own snipping tools. The cost is $35 per person. Register and pay by calling the BCC at 705-6578833 before November 24.
