OVER THE BACK FENCE
Fall is definitely in the air, isn’t it? The leaves are changing colours and the nights are getting nippier. But don’t get ready to hibernate just yet! There’s still lots of time to go for a country road drive to see the beautiful fall colours and take advantage of community events that celebrate the harvest season! I want to send a huge congratulations out to the organizers and participants in the annual Terry Fox Run in Bobcaygeon. They raised more than $33,000 to support the Terry Fox Foundation! Well done! My remarks at the Terry Fox Run focused on connections. The connection we have with each other and common causes. Living in our smaller communities, connection means even more in the coming winter months. Many of our community centres, legions, Lions’ clubs and other organizations have events and activities that can keep us engaged
with others. From fitness programs to games and social events, you can find something that turns your crank. With Thanksgiving just a week away, it means that many folks will be winding down their summer homes and cottages. As you’re clearing out the pantry and cupboards, please consider donating unopened goods to the local Food Bank. They’ll appreciate your donations! For the rest of us, why not pick up an extra bag of groceries – some pasta, cereal, canned veggies and soups, granola bars and even pet food – and drop it into one of the large bins at a local grocery store for the Food Bank. You’ll be glad you did! Thanksgiving is a time for tradition. Gathering the family and friends around the table to share a connection. We all have something to be thankful for, even if it’s just the love of your cat! The happiest people are those who are grateful. As a friend of mine says, “If you wake up on the right side of the grass, it’s a good day!” I hope your Thanksgiving is full of love. Hug your family close and leave the negativity at the door. Stay well and remember, be kind! editor@thepromoter.ca

City Hall THANK A FARMER IN PERSON
Enjoy a day of farm and food experiences on Saturday, October 3 at Kawartha Farmfest. This is an annual one-day, self-guided driving tour of farms and rural attractions in Kawartha Lakes. From 10am to 4pm, nine local farm families will open their gates to the public. Many sites have activities such as corn mazes as well as pick-your-own or farm grown food available for purchase. Tickets are $5 for adults and kids under 14 are admitted free. You can get more information and tickets through a link at kawarthalakes.ca.
MINIMUM WAGE RAISE
As of October 1, Ontario is increasing its minimum wage from $17.60 to $17.95 an hour, benefiting more than 700,000 workers across the province. This annual increase is tied to the Ontario Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 1.9 percent and marks the second-highest rate among provinces. A worker earning the general minimum wage and working 40 hours per week will see an annual pay increase of approximately $728. This balanced approach puts more money into workers’ pockets while helping businesses plan for the future, delivering on the government’s plan to protect Ontario and build a stronger, more competitive economy that can withstand global economic uncertainty. “Ontario’s workforce is our greatest advantage, and their hard work, skill and dedication keep our province moving forward every day,” said Trevor Jones, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “As families and workers face higher costs and businesses navigate changing trade environments, today’s minimum wage increase will help workers keep pace with global economic uncertainty while maintaining a predictable approach that businesses can plan for.”

specialization. It is recognized as one of Canada’s top 20 private philanthropic foundations. To inspire even greater support for this highpriority hospital need, FDC Foundation is challenging the community to join them. Once $500,000 is raised, it will unlock an additional $500,000 match gift from FDC, bringing their total gift to $1.7 million. “With this incredible matching opportunity, every donation from every individual, business, and community organization – every single gift doubles,” said Erin Coons, RMH Foundation CEO. “Thanks to FDC Foundation and our donor community, we are supporting the best possible care for patients by putting the best tools in the right hands and in the right places. Working together, we are ensuring life-saving imaging technology is available right here in Kawartha Lakes.” “Having state-of-the-art bedside equipment enables life-saving care and links critical information to care providers in the moment,” said Tim Shauf, RMH Foundation campaign chair. “The ultrasound project is a vital component of our WE ARE THE ROSS capital campaign, ensuring better, safer, faster care for our growing community. This leadership gift from FDC Foundation is a wonderful, welcome leap forward that will help the Ross team deliver timely, expert care to patients of all ages.” Ross Memorial’s high-priority ultrasound project includes five ultrasound units, two echocardiography units for cardiac imaging, and five portable point-ofcare ultrasound units dedicated to the ICU, Dialysis, OR, Internal Medicine and the Hospitalist Service for the rapid assessment and treatment of critically ill patients throughout the hospital. The project also includes advanced software such as cardiology picture archiving, as well as dedicated workstations, stretchers, and renovations that will enable more patient exams and reduce wait times. “This investment from FDC Foundation is making it possible for patients in our community to access the latest diagnostic imaging technology close to home,” said Veronica Nelson, President & CEO of Ross Memorial Hospital. “Access to new, local, modern equipment relies on the generosity of donors as these costs are not covered through government funding. We are deeply grateful to FDC Foundation and our community supporters for making these important advancements in patient care possible.” Advanced ultrasound technology helps the Ross team in every patient care area. Ultrasound is used to map, measure and guide procedures including central line placement, paracentesis, and IV insertion. Its precision imaging is instrumental in breast cancer care, detecting fetal abnormalities and problems in and around the heart. It is the tool of choice for diagnosing gall stones, early signs of kidney and liver disease and blood clots in the veins. To make a donation that will be doubled by FDC Foundation, give online at wearetheross.ca, mail your donation to the RMH Foundation or call 705-3286146.

comprised of ten youth leaders between the ages of 16 and 21 from across the country who have strong connections to their local BGC Clubs. Members bring their diverse experiences, perspectives and skills to provide leadership and advice on BGC Canada’s national projects and initiatives. The Youth Advisory Circle also creates meaningful opportunities for youth to develop leadership skills, build knowledge and capacity, and connect with peers through networking, mentorship and training. By bringing together youth from across Canada, the Circle ensures that the issues, priorities and goals of young people are heard and reflected at a national level. Avalon has demonstrated a strong commitment to her community and to creating opportunities for young people. When BGC Kawarthas began expanding its services into Fenelon Falls, Avalon was one of the first youth to join the Fenelon Falls Youth Council. Avalon shared, “I have had the honour to work with the lovely community and BGC members for many years now to help create the Loft. I worked with youth to gather ideas for programming, ensuring creative and learning desires are met; brought up issues facing my community, such as food insecurity and need for menstrual hygiene products to tailor the youth service to its people; and spoken at multiple different events such as the 100 women to raise over $15,000 for The Loft. I am always grateful to see youth thriving and take great effort to empower them.” Avalon’s passion for youth voice extends beyond her work with BGC Kawarthas. She has become a familiar and welcoming presence at community events and through her work at Fenelon Falls’ Maryboro Lodge Museum. Her kindness and genuine care for others have made a lasting impression on those around her. Her leadership was recognized at BGC Kawarthas’ 2026 Youth Awards, where she received the Club Spirit Award. Avalon also served as the event’s keynote speaker, captivating the audience with a powerful message about youth empowerment and the importance of listening to young people. “I am inspired by Avalon each time we connect,” said Carly Veitch, Manager of Youth Services. “She is compassionate, wise beyond her years, and is born to lead. I’ve seen firsthand how much she cares about Fenelon Falls and her peers in her community. We couldn’t be prouder to see her take this next step and bring the voices of Kawartha Lakes youth to a national level.” In October, she will be travelling with a Club staff to Calgary, Alberta for an in-person orientation. Avalon will serve as BGC Kawarthas’ first-ever representative on BGC Canada’s Youth Advisory Circle, bringing the perspectives and experiences of youth in Kawartha Lakes to a national audience. Since 1970, BGC Kawarthas has provided a welcoming, safe, and engaging home environment of and healthy that supports learning, development, the home of the

NEW HEART FAILURE PROGRAM
From explorefenelonfalls.com Residents of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County living with heart failure now have access to a newly launched, locally coordinated program designed to keep them healthier and closer to home. The partners of Kawartha Lakes Haliburton Ontario Health Team (KLH-OHT) recently launched its Heart Failure program. which welcomed its first patient this summer. The program was developed in alignment with the provincial Heart Failure Quality Standard and connects patients with the right level of support at the right time, whether that means their family

doctor or nurse practitioner, a specialist, or communitybased services such as home care. This also means that the Heart Failure Program team can see patients in existing primary care locations across the KLHOHT geography. The goal of the program is simple: help people manage a serious chronic condition proactively, with a clear care team, an escalation point if things change, and support that follows them across the system rather than leaving them to navigate it alone. This program is one part of a broader Chronic Disease Management and Prevention (CDMP) initiative now taking shape across our region, with a dedicated CDMP team being onboarded to support residents living with heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). As this team grows, it will work directly alongside primary care providers to identify patients earlier, provide education and selfmanagement support, and reduce avoidable trips to the emergency department. Primary care: the foundation everything else is built on None of this work happens in isolation. Primary care, the relationship people have with a family doctor, nurse practitioner, or primary care team, remains the foundation of a well-functioning, integrated health system. It is where chronic conditions are caught early, where care is coordinated, and where people build the ongoing, trusted relationships that keep them well. That is why our partners across the region have been working hard to grow primary care capacity and help unattached residents connect to a provider. As of this summer, more than 4,138 residents have been newly attached to primary care since last fall, part of a coordinated push toward our shared provincial goal of connecting every resident who wants a primary
care provider by 2029. This progress reflects the collaboration of family doctors, nurse practitioners, primary care teams, and community partners across Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County. Programs like the new Heart Failure initiative and the broader CDMP program are only possible because of this primary care foundation. As more residents are connected to a regular provider, and as supportive programs like CDMP mature alongside them, our community gains a stronger, more proactive system of care, one built around people, not just appointments. “We are proud of the collaboration among our primary care, hospital, and community partners that made this program possible, and we look forward to sharing more about the early experience of patients and providers in the months ahead,” says Stephanie MacLaren, Executive Director of the KLH-OHT.
LAST MINUTE CHANGE FOR FAIR DANCE
Organizers of the Bobcaygeon Fair posted on Facebook that there’s been a last-minute change of plans for the Saturday night dance. The originally scheduled band is no longer able to perform on October 3, but local favourites, The Thermostats, are stepping in to save the day. If you’ve seen these guys before, you already know we’re in for a GREAT night. If you haven’t… the Fair is the perfect place to change that. If you already have your tickets, there’s nothing you need to do. If you haven’t grabbed yours yet, head to bobcaygeonfair.com.

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) On October 10, the Sun and the Moon meet in Libra, resulting in a New Moon, which always represents the beginning of a new cycle. Libra, why not start a new project or step outside your comfort zone this month. You never know what awaits! Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) You may be offered what appears to be sound financial advice, Scorpio, during this zodiac phase, but please be sure to thoroughly check it out.
