Often called the “Jewel of the Kawarthas,” Fenelon Falls sits elegantly between the Trent-Severn Waterway and the pristine shores of Cameron Lake.
Originally known as Cameron Falls, the village was later renamed in honor of François de Salignac de La MotheFénelon, a missionary who once traveled these waters.
Today, this historic village is a traveler’s delight and proud to be one of Canada’s first Trail Town Communities. This designation celebrates the Trent-Severn Waterway as a gateway to adventure— merging outdoor exploration and pristine nature with a vibrant arts, culture, and dining scene.
Fenelon Falls’ waterfront truly offers something for everyone. From its rich ecological history and vibrant cultural experiences to its charming shopping district and diverse dining, there’s no shortage of things to explore.
Families can enjoy the splashpad, playground, and Garnet Graham Beach, or explore unique landmarks like the Bur Oak Grove, the Allen Wood Play Space, and the nostalgic One Room Schoolhouse.
Known to early settlers as “Niagara in Miniature,” the majestic seven-metre Fenelon Falls is best viewed from the east side of the Colborne Street Bridge. Long before modern development, the river could be crossed via a hidden natural stone bridge tucked behind the curtain of falling water. For generations, these waters have been the heartbeat of the
community—powering historic saw and grist mills, and continuing to provide hydroelectric power today.
While the Falls of Fenelon might be hidden from plain view—a result of historic town elders choosing to preserve the original roadway over costly relocation—they remain a spectacular sight for those who know where to look. Accessible via scenic paths to the north or from the windows of nearby restaurants, the falls cascade into a dramatic limestone gorge known to locals as the Fenelon River. It’s a powerful, hidden wonder right in the heart of the village.
Fenelon Falls is your gateway to 100km of exploration on the Victoria Rail Trail.
From high-energy ATVing and cycling to peaceful forest hikes and horseback rides, this trail has it all. Follow the path north for Haliburton’s wilderness or connect to the legendary Trans Canada Trail through Lindsay—all while soaking in those iconic Fenelon Falls waterfront views.
Fenelon Falls is dedicated to being an inclusive and supportive community that holistically addresses the social, recreational, and spiritual needs of its residents and visitors.
If you haven’t been to Fenelon Falls in awhile, you’ll be treated to a revitalized downtown and area attractions. You’ll find unique shops, dining experiences, landmarks and outdoor activities, as well as an extraordinary outdoor amphitheatre – The Grove.
Trent-Severn Waterway
Situated on a scenic island right in the downtown core, Lock 34 is one of the most convenient stops on the Trent-Severn Waterway.
Boaters will find prime docking space equipped with hydro and water hookups, offering seamless access to the village's shops, dining, and attractions.

Heritage
The story of Fenelon Falls begins in the early 1800s as a vital route for the fur trade.
By the mid-19th century, logging and agriculture transformed the landscape, anchored by James Wallis’s prosperous flour mill. To support this growing industry, R.C. Smith constructed the first bridge in the 1860s, allowing trains to haul timber to distant markets.
Formally incorporated in 1874, the village saw the arrival of the Victoria Railway just two years later. This critical line evolved through several hands— from the Midland Railway to the Grand Trunk Railway in 1893, and finally to Canadian National (CN) in 1923. Though
the line was abandoned in 1983 following the burning of the McLaren’s Creek bridge, its legacy lives on: the Victoria Rail Trail now follows this historic path from Lindsay directly into the heart of Fenelon Falls.
In 1885, a new chapter began with the construction of the lock between Cameron and Sturgeon Lakes, forever linking the village to the Great Lakes and beyond.
Just a short walk from Lock 34, the Maryboro Lodge Museum—a provincially designated historic site—offers the most comprehensive collection of artifacts in the Kawarthas. During the summer, they hosts Family Fundays on Saturdays in July & August. They also host Teas on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 between Canada Day and Labour Day.
Visit www.maryboro.ca to plan your visit.
Fenelon Falls is located on the homeland of the Michi Saagiig (also known as the Mississauga First Nations), and the collective Williams Treaties First Nations, which include the Curve Lake, Hiawatha, Alderville, Scugog Island,
Rama, Beausoleil, and Georgina Island First Nations. We recognize that these lands are their traditional territory, and are grateful for their caretaking and stewardship of the land, historically and for the years to come.
